In a true tale of modern romance, Blake and Abbey met on a dating app, and when it came time to make it official, he proposed on a rooftop overlooking scenic downtown Grand Rapids! The greenhouse in Grand Rapids Downtown Market had been Abbey’s dream venue since she moved to the city. With that venue in mind, Abbey and Blake wanted to plan a wedding that matched the season in which they would be wed. The happy couple also has a deep love of the '60s and '70s, so added those vibes to their overall theme. Deep, moody fall colors combined with disco balls and vinyl records created their editorial wedding look!

Abbey’s ceremony dress is the perfect look for this retro wedding. Becker’s Bridal did an amazing job helping Abbey pick out a timeless look that still reflected her personal style. “I ultimately knew it was perfect for me once I tried on that dress. I felt confident, my demeanor and posture changed and everyone with me knew it was the perfect choice,” Abbey raves. The corset paired with the classic silhouette and the pearl encrusted veil makes Abbey look like she walked right out of a 1960s bridal magazine!

Within the rolling countryside of Southwest Michigan lies Gable Hill; a barn nestled in the woods, surrounded by Streater’s Mill Pond and set upon 13 picturesque acres.

At Gable Hill, we accommodate events for 200 guests including weddings, family reunions, and work-related functions. Ample space for catering services has been provided within the barn for your convenience.

For weddings, a lovely outdoor ceremony area overlooks the pond and within a short walk is the bridal cottage where wedding parties can relax and prepare for their day in comfort. No detail has been overlooked in order to make any event at Gable Hill a memorable one.

A MUSKEGON STYLE SHOOT WHERE RETRO AND MODERNITY COLLIDE

Being the first shoot in this brand new venue, the team really wanted to show off the versatility of the space. Instead of going for the bright disco style that was popular in the '60s and '70s, the team aimed to showcase the softer side of vintage weddings. Let us be the first to say, the three photographers, Kara Hanes Photography, Love Photography and Pavé Wedding Productions, all captured this shoot in their unique styles but in a way that is cohesive with each other and all equally as showstopping! Even though there are some darker and edgier areas of this venue, the delicate details create a beautiful contrast that elevates this wedding scene. They also incorporated multiple dresses to help illustrate how you can blend seemingly opposing themes. We absolutely love the editorial nature of the pink ballgown while the shorter dress with fringe shawl spoke to our boho-loving hearts!

Wedding dress shopping is a thrilling experience filled with anticipation and the joy of finding the perfect gown to say "I do" in. The process allows brides to explore different styles, fabrics and embellishments, envisioning themselves as the radiant center of attention on their big day. However, amidst all the excitement, it's essential to acknowledge that wedding dress shopping can also be stressful. The pressure to find the perfect dress that fulfills both personal preferences and societal expectations can often create anxiety. However, the process doesn't have to be a scary one! We chatted with Cayla Johnson, Social Media and PR Manager of Becker's Bridal who shared her guidance and top five tips for making the journey of finding your dream wedding dress a more enjoyable and stress-free experience!

Do your Research

"It's important to do a little bit of research as you begin your dress shopping journey! Not only is it important to learn about what the industry standard is for items such as pricing and production timelines, it's important to find a shop who you can trust. Reading reviews and asking your friends and family about their own personal experiences can greatly benefit you as you decide where to shop!"

Decide What to Bring

Manage Expectations

"Oftentimes, brides WILL fall in love with a gown while shopping, so managing the expectation of 'I may be leaving with a gown either in hand or on order' will be helpful in terms of financial preparation. It's industry standard to have purchases be final sale, so being prepared to place a deposit is helpful. It's also very helpful to not 'stack' dress shopping appointments because it can quickly feel like work rather than enjoyment/excitement!"

"Because this is often the first 'big' moment of your engagement season, women often feel inclined to include everybody who may be at some point involved in the wedding; however, we recommend the 'less is more' mentality. Bringing the voices and opinions that matter the most to you during the appointment will help keep the appointment focused on what's important to YOU. When there are too many people's opinions, it can become confusing and less enjoyable. Plus, there will be several opportunities to include other ladies along the engagement journey!"

"We recommend bringing some basics to prepare you for the appointment. Photo inspiration from either our website 'wish list' feature, our social media platforms and/or your Pinterest board are super helpful at the start of the appointment. Your stylist can help guide you in finding these styles and deciding whether or not you like them! Also, wearing neutral colored undergarments will help avoid distractions and a hair tie/clip is always helpful, too! Wearing clear deodorant and no body makeup is encouraged as you'll be trying on several sample gowns that one day might become somebody's 'yes' dress."

"Our final piece of advice is to trust in yourself! You've been doing it your entire life and it's what has led you to become engaged, in one way or another. When dress shopping, trust yourself! You'll know what gown makes you feel beautiful, bridal, excited and most importantly, YOURSELF!"

After stepping foot on the grounds of their venue, Taylor was immediately inspired to plan a specific wedding for her and Zachary. “I always had an idea in my mind for a Midsummer Night’s Dream wedding, which I could feel at the grounds of the wedding venue,” Taylor shares. From there, their whimsical, romantic garden wedding came to life. To offset the luscious green of the numerous plants, Taylor and Zachary chose to incorporate a crisp white that can be seen throughout their day. This gives the whole scene a regal look, especially with the addition of their new family crest on the pillows, napkins and matches!

WEDDINGDAY’S EXCLUSIVE GRAND RAPIDS DIGITAL COVER SHOOT

The Vision

Emmaleigh White Wedding & Event Planning envisioned a summer garden sunset theme for our Grand Rapids spring/ summer 2023 digital issue cover shoot. Drawing inspiration from the romantic beauty of nature's golden hour, this shoot takes you to a dreamy garden setting filled with warmth and elegance. Soft pinks, oranges and yellows are artfully woven throughout the shoot, reflecting the captivating hues of a summer sunset. We love the way Like the Planet Photography captured every detail, showcasing the magic of love in bloom along with the shoot's ethereal charm and delicate palette!

The Venue

We couldn't have chosen a more enchanting location for our cover shoot than Bear Creek Farm. Situated on seventy acres of rolling hills in Lainsburg, Michigan, the farm is nestled amidst breathtaking landscapes, with a picturesque pond adorned by graceful weeping willows. The historic barn, built in 1908, exudes rustic charm and offers a picturesque backdrop for any celebration. Bear Creek Farm's allure extends beyond its natural beauty, as it provides endless photographic opportunities, a relaxing atmosphere and joyous experiences for all. And their extensive inventory of rental items really brought the entire look together!

The Look

The model's dress from Becker's Bridal was an absolute showstopper! Its strapless design and flowing silhouette added a touch of enchantment to the look, while the cascading floral appliqués gave a nod to the garden theme. The talented team at The Pretty Committee worked their magic, styling our model's hair in a effortlessly chic half-up hairstyle, accented with loose, cascading curls that delicately framed her face. The look exuded a relaxed and romantic vibe, perfectly complementing the overall theme of the shoot. To accentuate her natural beauty, the makeup was kept refreshingly minimal, allowing her radiant features to shine through. A classic veil and delicate pearl headband finished off the look, adding a touch of subtle sparkle and sophistication! Our groom was looking dapper in his classic gray suit from 1701 Bespoke.

The Cake

Look at this breathtaking three-tiered cake from MI Great Lakes Cakes! Adorned in an elegant all-white design with a delicate powder blue accent, it is a true masterpiece crafted to perfection! Nestled amidst a magnificent floral installation, the cake created a mesmerizing garden effect, as if it were a blooming marvel within a fairytale landscape. Its presence added an extra layer of allure to the already captivating scene, leaving everyone in awe of its beauty and artistry.

The Florals

The garden-like floral designs in our cover shoot from Sparrow Bloom were a true marvel, evoking a sense of natural wonder and enchantment. Soft pastel hues of pink, orange and yellow adorned the arrangements, creating a delicate and dreamy ambiance. With a whimsical flair, the designs artfully mimicked wildflowers, adding a touch of untamed beauty to the scene. The floral arrangements beautifully reflected the garden theme, transporting us to a world of blossoming charm and serenity!

Emerald Schill Studio added a touch of everlasting beauty to our flat lay display with their stunning preserved floral blocks and ring holder. The intricate designs showcased a vibrant array of colors and textures, enhancing the overall visual appeal of the design. From key chains to trays, we love all the unique ways they can preserve your bouquet, allowing its beauty to endure well beyond the wedding day. And this experience wouldn't be complete without Emerald Schill Studio preserving some florals from our very cover shoot! Be sure to turn to page 94 for a special feature on how she allowed our beautiful blooms to live on.

Wedding Stationery by PSR Designs of Indiana brought timeless beauty into our cover shoot with their delicate invitation design. The light blush color palette added a touch of romance and the whimsical font played off our garden theme perfectly!
