As soon as Whitney was engaged to Brian, she knew two things. One, she wanted to honor where she came from by getting married on the lake she grew up on, even though she now lives in California. Two, using her family’s rental business—AAYS Event Rentals—and their connections from many years in the wedding industry was the best way to find her vendors as well as allow Whitney a fun opportunity to work with her dad and sister. Brian and Whitney used the lake as inspiration to make a Romaninspired summer camp wedding. Finding a middle ground between Whitney’s love for bold color and Brian’s liking of simpler hues, they decided to go with earth tones with plenty of airy elements. We love the way this truly looks like a woodland Roman feast, especially with the handmade décor items made by Whitney herself that give life to this simplistic yet elegant theme!

AN INDUSTRIAL SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN STYLE SHOOT

When this team of professionals came together, they decided they wanted to create a shoot that was modern and whimsical that featured designs that hadn’t been overdone in the wedding industry. Venturing away from their usual color scheme, these vendors incorporated subtle touches of yellow, blue and pink into this rather neutral scene. The flowers on the tablescape are a perfect example of those spring colors shining around the space. Speaking of flowers, we love the floral lace details in that dress! It couples beautifully with the bride’s loose curls and natural makeup for an exquisite spring look.

Journeyman was the ideal backdrop for Laura Spencer Photography to capture this shoot. “They are just such a well known space, their industrial elements are unique and the perfect canvas for our vision of a colorful, whimsical design,” Kelsey Hahn, the planner of this shoot, raves. Wedding dress shopping is a thrilling experience filled with anticipation and the joy of finding the perfect gown to say "I do" in. The process allows brides to explore different styles, fabrics and embellishments, envisioning themselves as the radiant center of attention on their big day. However, amidst all the excitement, it's essential to acknowledge that wedding dress shopping can also be stressful. The pressure to find the perfect dress that fulfills both personal preferences and societal expectations can often create anxiety. However, the process doesn't have to be a scary one! We chatted with Cayla Johnson, Social Media and PR Manager of Becker's Bridal who shared her guidance and top five tips for making the journey of finding your dream wedding dress a more enjoyable and stress-free experience!

"It's important to do a little bit of research as you begin your dress shopping journey! Not only is it important to learn about what the industry standard is for items such as pricing and production timelines, it's important to find a shop who you can trust. Reading reviews and asking your friends and family about their own personal experiences can greatly benefit you as you decide where to shop!"

Manage Expectations

"Oftentimes, brides WILL fall in love with a gown while shopping, so managing the expectation of 'I may be leaving with a gown either in hand or on order' will be helpful in terms of financial preparation. It's industry standard to have purchases be final sale, so being prepared to place a deposit is helpful. It's also very helpful to not 'stack' dress shopping appointments because it can quickly feel like work rather than enjoyment/excitement!"

"Because this is often the first 'big' moment of your engagement season, women often feel inclined to include everybody who may be at some point involved in the wedding; however, we recommend the 'less is more' mentality. Bringing the voices and opinions that matter the most to you during the appointment will help keep the appointment focused on what's important to YOU. When there are too many people's opinions, it can become confusing and less enjoyable. Plus, there will be several opportunities to include other ladies along the engagement journey!"

"We recommend bringing some basics to prepare you for the appointment. Photo inspiration from either our website 'wish list' feature, our social media platforms and/or your Pinterest board are super helpful at the start of the appointment. Your stylist can help guide you in finding these styles and deciding whether or not you like them! Also, wearing neutral colored undergarments will help avoid distractions and a hair tie/clip is always helpful, too! Wearing clear deodorant and no body makeup is encouraged as you'll be trying on several sample gowns that one day might become somebody's 'yes' dress."

"Our final piece of advice is to trust in yourself! You've been doing it your entire life and it's what has led you to become engaged, in one way or another. When dress shopping, trust yourself! You'll know what gown makes you feel beautiful, bridal, excited and most importantly, YOURSELF!"

“The process of planning a wedding can become overwhelming so quickly. It’s easy to be swept up into all the ideas and options and opinions. You can get lost in it all. John and I created a vision for how we wanted to feel on the day and rooted ourselves in a few key thoughts and words. This was really helpful because it became a touchstone we kept coming back to. When things started spinning, we could reflect and see if we were getting closer to our vision or farther away, and then refocus.”

A WHIMSICAL & COLORFUL STYLE SHOOT

Wanting to show couples that color can be used in an elegant fashion, this creative team developed a bold garden party scene for their style shoot. Farrand Hall was one of the major inspirations for this shoot, with its Greek revival architecture and expansive garden that couples can enjoy on their wedding day, weather permitting. Unfortunately, rain dampened the day of this shoot, but the venue's plentiful charm still shone through! Speaking of the outdoors, you can’t have a garden-inspired shoot without plenty of florals to fill the scene! This shoot is filled to the brim with blooms of various colors and textures to occupy every inch of this space!

THE EASIEST GUIDE TO

AFTER THE WEDDING changing your last name

Your newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.

1.

GET THE ORIGINAL MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE

The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL SECURITY CARD

If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.

3.

APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE AT THE BMV

Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.

4.

CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME WITH YOUR HR DEPARTMENT

When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.

5.

UPDATE YOUR BANK ACCOUNT INFORMATION

The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.

6.

UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME ON OTHER MISCELLANEOUS ACCOUNTS

As time goes on, you will remember more accounts that your last name must be changed on. Remember to keep all of the necessary documents within reach to easily change your name.

"We are a full-service hotel, so we have our executive chef in-house, making the planning process even easier. We have all tables, chairs, etc., but we allow outside vendors for anything the couple may want or need!"

"The DoubleTree by Hilton in downtown South Bend has an extremely unique feature with the atrium available to rent out as a private event space. The atrium landscapes extremely tall ceilings and all glass windows giving the illusion as if you are outdoors.

"My favorite part of my job is taking the stress out of a couple’s planning. I pride myself in being extremely organized, and

"My favorite part about the industry is meeting genuine couples. I have met some of the most incredible people over the years and being able to say I was a huge part in the success of their wedding is such an honor."

What’s the most common question you get from couples?

"The most common question I get is how they can make their wedding more affordable. I love giving my tips and tricks. For example, if they love the look of a beautiful tiered cake but do not love the price tag, they can get a faux tier cake and only have the top be real to do the cutting—and the rest can be sheet cake."

What are the best tips you have for helping couples prepare for their day?

"I have put together a finalization checklist that is roughly six pages long! It started only being one page, but the more weddings I did, the more I learned and the longer my list got! Couples tell me my finalization checklist has saved them and has made the planning process so much easier for them, and that is my ultimate goal! Finally, soak it all in. The big day will come and go SO fast. You will wake up the day after your wedding and you will not believe it is over. So, walk slow down that ceremony aisle and don’t sweat the small stuff. I guarantee your guests have no idea if something isn’t the way you wanted it. Only you will notice, so don’t let it ruin your night. Enjoy every single moment because you deserve it!"

The Vision

Leigha from EXL Events Co wanted to have fun with our Southwest Michigan spring/ summer cover shoot by infusing some whimsical elements while still keeping it classy. It’s no secret that color is making a comeback in the wedding world, so she decided to go with bold hues to amplify the scene. We think she created the perfect balance of vibrant colors and classic elegance for Wild Pine Photo Co. to capture!

The Decor

Leigha combined several textures using pieces from AAYS Event Rentals’ vast collection. Between the uniquely shaped wooden chargers at the sweetheart table to the floral pattern plates and gold-rimmed china on the guest tablescapes, there are plenty of small details to love. She raves, “AAYS made the process super easy. Even with so many options to choose from, they really helped the vision come to life.”

The Venue

While wooden details and barn venues usually lend to a rustic or boho style, Twin Gables Event Center has a more elevated feel, acting as a classic place to host a wedding of any style. The vaulted ceilings make the space seem even bigger, and that chandelier in the center of the room gives it that elegant air. It feels as though our bride and groom have stepped out of the woods into a magical fairytale scene!

The Florals

Marco Alexzondra Floral & Event Services knocked Leigha’s vision of bright colors and playful vibes out of the park! The various floral textures lend to the fun and whimsical theme beautifully while the bouquet lends an air of romance while keeping in the bold color palette.

The Cake

Matching the playful vibes in the shoot, this yellow three-tiered wedding cake from Homestead Kitchen is simply jaw-dropping! Partially inspired by the freshness of fruit, some dried citrus peels and fresh florals were included to elevate the design. And the dessert table wouldn’t be complete without a selection of delectable macarons and cannoli for fun handheld treats!

The Look

The style of the bride’s dress from Memories Bridal is simple and a bit vintage with its balloon sleeves and deep V neckline. We love the flowing silhouette and how effortlessly gorgeous our model looks in it! BÜK Weddings styled a stunning curled half-up hairstyle that they paired with light, natural makeup but with a pop of green on the lower lash line for a fun twist. And, they did it all from the comfort of Hitched Suites, a luxury mobile bridal suite. We love the trendy interior, boasting three beauty stations, lounge area, private restroom, mini bar and much more! Hitched Suites makes your wedding preparation a breeze, especially if your venue doesn’t have an onsite bridal suite.

The Stationery

When she shared the mood board with Michelle of Zé Design Studio, Leigha had no idea she was going to return such an artistic array of paper products! Michelle created intricately designed stationery that tied in perfectly to the design of the shoot and included floral patterns, citrus elements and even a details card in the shape of a lemonade pitcher!
