An Angelic Encounter and a Hope
A
h February – the month we turn our fancies to affairs of the heart – the memories of those we have loved and lost, the longing for the ones we have not yet found, and, for the lucky, the ones we have and hold dear. As a magazine editor, February also has me fancying something else – someone who would make for a good cover and romance story. Knowing that the bow-and-arrow-touting cherubic son of Venus is as mythical as a “working member” of congress, and that the sainted Bishop Valentinus of Terni has been dead for over 1,745 years, I figured the next best thing would be to seek out an angel to grace our cover. Ironically, as a resident of the City of Angels, I had to blow out of La La Land and make a 100-mile road trip up the California coast to experience this angelic encounter. And so, on a beautiful Sunday morning, I headed north on Pacific Coast Highway to spend the day with an angel – Cheryl Ladd – and her husband, Brian Russell at their Solvang home. For my fellow heterosexual, early-to-mid-50-pluser males, there is no need for me to explain the impact the television series “Charlie’s Angels” had upon our pubescent, teenage and twentysomething fascination with the female of our species. During the five-year run of the show, it was rare to find the bedroom wall of a male, between say 13 and 22, that was sans a poster of at least one of the six women who starred as those angelic crime-fighting detectives. Oh, and just as a point of personal disclosure, three of them, including the angel I was about to spend the day with, made my wall. And so as I arrived at the Russells’ home and was greeted by their labradoodle, Crockett, I found myself momentarily transported back to my days of yore when I looked up and there she was, angelically haloed by the sun the same way she was by studio lighting on that poster that once graced my wall. During my visit with Brian and Cheryl, it became more than evident that if a good ol’ romance story was what I was looking for (and I was), I had come to the right place. It only took a short time of being around the 33-year-married Russells to see that there really is a formula for making a marriage work – and they have found it. Is it a magic formula? No, I think it’s a more pragmatic one that Cheryl, perhaps, sums up as well as anyone could: “We see through the same window.” As this Valentine’s Day nears, my hope is if, like the Russells, you have someone with whom you see through the same widow, that you truly treasure that gift. And if you don’t, I hope that you either do soon find a windowgazing partner, or forever cherish the memory of the one whom you once were fortunate enough to have peered through the same window with.

D is Key to Mobility
Plus
What You Need to Know By Claire Yezbak Fadden
Maintaining mobility as you get older may be as simple as adding Vitamin D to your diet. According to a study recently published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, individuals over 55 who are deficient in Vitamin D had an average of two more physical limitations than their counterparts. While Vitamin D isn’t naturally found in many foods, the best sources for it are in fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel. Beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks also provide small amounts and Vitamin D is added to many breakfast cereals and to some brands of orange juice, yogurt, margarine, and soy beverages.
Get Face-To-Face With “Hart To Hart” Star In his forthcoming book, “You Must Remember This” (Viking Adult, March 2014), legendary actor and bestselling author Robert Wagner will give readers a nostalgic look at Hollywood’s Golden Age – its mythic tales, luminous stars, and the houses and haunts of Tinsletown’s elite. Wagner, who was married to Natalie Wood and is currently, married to Jill St. John, starred in such films as “A Kiss Before Dying,” “The Longest Day,” “The Pink Panther” and the “Austin Powers” franchise. And, while his big-screen resume is impressive, he is, perhaps, best-known for his role as Jonathan Hart on “Hart to Hart,” the hugely popular ABC television 1980s series he starred in with Stefanie Powers. With a career spanning more than five decades, few actors are more qualified to recount this glamorous Hollywood era than Wagner. Recalling the glory days of the 1940s and early ‘50s, Wagner will regale readers with tales of his friends Mary Pickford, Harold Lloyd, Andy Williams, Bette Davis, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart and many more. An expert storyteller, he’ll also share his memories of evenings of elegance, entertainment, great food and star-studded company at establishments such as the Brown Derby, Chasen’s, the Trocadero and the Mocambo. Wagner’s tome will also include fond recollections of his childhood in Hollywood as he watched open spaces transform into elaborate hotels and homes as the area became a magnet for the rich and famous. For those in the Southern California area, next month will provide you with the opportunity to meet Wagner and have him sign a copy of his new book. He will be appearing at Barnes & Noble, Grove Drive, Los Angeles on March 18 at 7 p.m. and at Vroman’s Books, East Colorado Boulvard in Pasadena on March 19 at 7 p.m.
Fifty Candles Fifty years ago this month, The Beatles made their first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” the Hasbro toy company debuted GI Joe action figures and World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Cassius Clay became a Muslim and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Among the notables born in February 2014, who will be celebrating their 50th birthday this month, are actress Kaitlin Hopkins, Guns N’ Roses bassist Michael “Duff” McKagan, actress and singer Laura Linney, astronaut Mark E. Kelly, actor Matt Dillon and former National Basketball Association player Mark Price.

The 50th State Ranks First in Longevity A new report shows residents of the Aloha State live longer than residents in any of the other 49 states. The latest state-specific life expectancy tables from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show Hawaiians’ average life expectancy at birth from 1999 to 2001 was 80.2 years. Mississippi had the lowest life expectancy at 73.9 years with the District of Columbia’s even lower at 73.1 years. The CDC releases life expectancy tables every 10 years, based on federal census and state death certificate data. In addition to Hawaii, states with the longest life expectancy include Minnesota (79.3), North Dakota (79.1), Connecticut (78.9) and Utah (78.9). Along with Mississippi, the states with the shortest life expectancy include Kentucky (75.2), South Carolina (75), Alabama (74.8) and Louisiana.
A Little More You Need To Know Getting to Know the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
New Words You might not find them in a dictionary yet, but they’re a part of the everyday American vocabulary. Here’s what they mean. Digital Detox: A self-imposed moratorium from using electronic devices such as video games, smartphones or computers as an opportunity to reduce stress or focus on real live, old-fashioned, face-to-face social interaction. Bitcoin: A digital currency used in transactions without the need for a central bank. Bitcoin is cryptocurrency, so-called because of the use of cryptography, the computerized encoding and decoding of information to control the creation and transfer of money. The United States is considered to be “Bitcoin friendly” compared to other governments. While the commercial use of Bitcoin is currently small as a form of payment for products and services, it has seen growth, mostly because merchants have an incentive to accept the currency with transaction fees lower than the two-to-three percent typically imposed by credit card processors. Merch: An abbreviation of the word “merchandise,” it is typically an insider’s term for any form of the manufactured goods bought and sold in any business.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka PPACA or Obamacare, is the congressional and senate-passed law, signed by the president and deemed constitutional by the Supreme Court. Like it or not, simply put, it is the law of the land and it is here to stay. This new law will have a tremendous impact on how American healthcare is offered, purchased and delivered. It may be controversial, but no matter what one’s feelings are, it is paramount that everyone, of every age, educate themselves on what it is, as well as what it isn’t. If there is one thing everyone agrees on, it is that the PPACA is complicated. So, as a service to our readers, Life After 50 will do its best to break it down into the most simplified terms. Each month, without any agenda other than to educate, we will offer the answers to questions as to what the PPACA does and doesn’t do. If a person is retired and their former employer offers them insurance, can they still shop on the exchange to see if they can get a better deal? Even if a former employer offers coverage, anyone can opt to buy a plan on the exchange. However, they may not be eligible for a subsidy. If one member of a household is on Medicare, is the cost paid for the Medicare taken into consideration to determine the subsidy for the remaining family members? No. One’s eligibility for subsidies and the amount of the subsidy will be based on family income. The amount a spouse pays for his or her Medicare, Medicare Part D and supplemental insurance premium costs will not be taken into account. If someone does not want to use www.healthcare.gov but thinks their family may be eligible for a subsidy, is there another way to determine if they are eligible? Individuals and families can buy health insurance from insurance companies, through the Health Insurance Marketplace, or with the help of a licensed insurance agent. Any one of these sources can assist you in finding out if you’re eligible for lower costs such as premium subsidies. This is based on your income, age of family members and family size. To qualify for lower costs, you have to purchase coverage through the marketplace. If you are eligible for lower costs, you can access the marketplace directly online, by phone or using a paper application or through a broker who is authorized to sell plans and can connect you to the marketplace for subsidy eligibility.

A Special Wellness Report New Medicine Based On An 88-Year Old Theory By Albert Einstein Can Help Almost Everyone Who Is Sick Or Injured!
W
hat you are about to read may be the most important information you’ve ever read. Here is why.
inflammation, increase cellular energy, increase cell permeability (so that the nutrients the cell needs to heal can get into the cell) and even help correct faulty DNA!*
Albert Einstein was, quite possibly, the most intelligent person who ever lived. His theories and ideas were so far ahead of his time, that even now, the smartest scientists alive are still discovering his value.
What you have just read is a very simplistic (almost childish) explanation of low-level laser therapy, of how it works, and what it can do for you. But this is something that needs to be explained to you much more accurately by a real expert.
One of his theories published in 1917, worked out the theory of how lasers function. However, it was not until May 16, 1960 (43 years later) that the first actual laser was developed by an American scientist. Since then, scientists and inventors have developed many types of lasers and all kinds of uses for them. They can be used as a scalpel that is so delicate, it can be used on the eyes of human beings. Lasers are used to read price codes at your local supermarkets. And they’re used to play music and video on your CD’s and DVD’s. But now, there is a new type of laser so effective against human disease and injury that it is rapidly changing the practice of medicine. This is a new type of low-level laser which produces an unfocused light that has been...
Registered With The FDA To Be 100% Safe! Low-level lasers use less than one watt of power and they produce what can best be described as a “Healing Light”. Here is a somewhat un-scientific description of how this “Healing Light” can potentially help reverse the damage done by human sickness and disease. As you probably know, our entire bodies are made up of cells. The health of all human cells is based on energy. If your cells don’t receive enough energy, they will weaken and the body will become sick. Call 1-800-303-6923, Code 6529.
Be One Of The First 200 To Call & Receive A Free DVD! For you to be healthy, what your cells need is exactly the right kind and the right amount of energy. Every time you get injured or become sick, the energy flow to your cells is disrupted. Until the proper type and amount of energy is restored, you will remain sick or injured. That’s what a low-level laser device does. It re-energizes the cells in your body with the right kind and proper amount of healing energy. It may surprise you to learn that low level lasers are ...
Used By Doctors To Heal Their Patients In The Fastest Way Possible! Could you guess what kind of doctors use the highest percent of low-level lasers on their patients? It’s doctors involved in sports medicine. Why? The answer is simple. You see, doctors involved in sports medicine often have to get their patients better in the fastest way humanly possible because every day he remains “unhealthy” can cost the sports organization millions of dollars. But here’s something exciting! You don’t actually need to go to a doctor to get laser therapy. If you want to you

Perhaps the best low-level lasers in the world have been invented by a doctor named Larry Lytle. He has studied lasers and human health for years, and Dr. Lytle is, without question, one of the most knowledgeable people in the world about low-level lasers... and... how they can be used...
To Help Almost Every Health Problem Ever Experienced By A Human Being! Dr. Lytle believes (as do many other people) low-level laser therapy will become the medicine of the future. If you hold a low-level laser device against the skin of your body and turn it on, you will be able to see the laser light... but... you will not be able to feel it. There probably won’t even be a sensation of warmth. Laser light is as gentle as the kiss of a butterfly. But, from a healing point of view, it is quite possible it is more effective than drugs or surgery. Low-level laser therapy is not just the medicine of the future. For many people who know about it, it is the “medicine” they use now. The problem of trying to explain the healing powers of low-level laser therapy is...

For others, it can make the difference of living a healthy life compared to a low-energy life of sickness and disease. Stuck in a Sticky Stock Situation
Q
Our dad, who passed away a year ago, had everything in a living trust except some stock. As his executor and trustee, I hired a trust attorney to help me make sure all the beneficiaries received their proper inheritance. My siblings were against my hiring the attorney because of the cost. They tried to convince me we could do the paperwork on our own and save the money. As it turned out, finalizing everything was more complicated than anyone realized it would be, because of the involvement of rental properties. The biggest problem involved the stock. Not only was the stock not a part of our dad’s living trust, but it also didn’t name a beneficiary. Since the stock was only worth $36,000, I didn’t want to pay the lawyer to handle the transfer. He told me to let him do it, but I insisted I could handle it. I followed the instructions from the stock company. Since it was out-of-state, I sent the small estate affidavit, the seal from the bank for the stock certificate, the living trust, the pour-over will, and the stock company’s forms. After multiple submissions of the paperwork, the stock company sent me a letter last week saying they will need a court order to transfer the shares to the trust. That would mean I’d have to start a probate, which would take even longer and cost more in legal fees. I’m afraid to even call the lawyer, because I’m afraid he’ll tell me what this will cost and my siblings will flip out. I feel like I should have just spent the money on the lawyer to do this, but I never dreamed it would get this complicated. Should I just forfeit my share and let my siblings deal with the stock?
A
No. You’ve made it this far, so I wouldn’t just throw in the towel yet. For one thing, handing it over to your siblings won’t solve the problem. Unless they have the legal authority as a successor executor, the stock company won’t deal with them. Even if one of them is the successor executor, they will probably get the same answer you did. If you try to have them handle this as trust beneficiaries, it still might not work and they’ll just come back to you to fix it. The other problem is one that faces you. If the stock went down in value during the time you were trying to handle this on your own, you could be blamed for the loss in value. Since you’re the executor and trustee, you could be held financially responsible for that decrease in value. For that reason, you need to finish this off to make sure the transfer is completed properly and you’re shielded from any liability. What you should have done early on, when the transfer wasn’t going through, was let the attorney help you. I don’t know if your attorney tried to warn you, but this is a more common problem with post-death transfers of stock not held in a trust and not held with a brokerage firm, rather than the trust. As such, it’s not clear that even your attorney would have had a different response. However, he would have more likely than not gotten the response sooner and been able to resolve the issue. You are dealing with an out-of-state company and in that state, the law might require a probate to transfer assets. However, since your dad’s stock was held in California, the company would be required to comply with the probate code for small estates. Since your dad’s stock was the only asset outside of the trust and it was worth less than $150,000, the company should transfer it to your dad’s living trust. Then, you would transfer the proceeds according to his trust. Your lawyer should be able to help you complete this and make sure the documentation is in order to protect you from your siblings for this transaction. If you are hoping for some good news, hope that the stock went up in value. I hope that is the case and wish you all the best. ✦

If You Have a Mortgage, You Have Opportunities
E
ven though interest rates rose slightly in 2013, fixed-mortgage rates are still close to their all-time historic lows. For those approaching or in retirement, this fact has profound implications and creates significant opportunities to consider. As it becomes increasingly likely that long-term rates will start to go up, it is imperative to take action if you are considering a refinance or a reverse mortgage. There are three scenarios you should be thinking about if you own a property which can or does have a mortgage on it. Refinancing, cashing out equity or reverse mortgages. Refinance Now! If you currently have a mortgage on your house, you should be talking with a mortgage broker or bank to see about a refinance. Everyone needs to at least make the call and see if they have an option to refinance. While rates change daily and may have jumped even by the time you are reading this article, I can’t stress enough that you need to look into this immediately. Take Cash Out This is a slightly more involved conversation, but it can be summarized simply: If you can borrow cash out of your home at the lowest interest rates in history, you should seriously consider it. I know that statement may sound a bit crazy, however, the benefits are dramatic and I’m seeing many folks in retirement experience huge benefits from doing this. To give you an example: I recently met with a 70-year-old woman whose house is worth around $400,000, with a mortgage below $50,000. By refinancing to a $200,000 mortgage, she will now be receiving between $571 and $908 of extra income a month, every month, for the rest of her life. The $571 is the minimum income and can literally be guaranteed. While I can’t address every detail here, this includes all the factors such as a higher mortgage payment, taxes and guarantees. Virtually anyone who has equity in their house and is able to qualify for a
10 LIFEAFTER50.COM February 2014
mortgage can implement this exact same strategy. It can literally be done in a risk-free and guaranteed or insured way. It’s not magic, just a result of the lowest interest rates in history. Consider a Reverse Mortgage The third option, taking out a reverse mortgage, is essentially a consolidated version of the second option. The reverse mortgage puts a refinance together with lifetime income in one simple package. I know that many have a negative impression of reverse mortgages. As my firm does not offer reverse mortgages, I can tell you without hesitation that those fears are misplaced. Years ago, when reverse mortgages were created, they were not very good. There were significant problems and risks. Today, those problems have been addressed and the risks removed. In the same example I used above, the 70-year-old woman would receive an additional $1,216 a month in income, every month, for the rest of her life. Again, this is safe, insured and guaranteed. The house can never be lost or taken as long as she lives there. The only downside of the reverse mortgage is that your heirs will eventually inherit a house with a mortgage on it, possibly even a large mortgage. The refinance with cash out (second option) generally gives you more income and leaves plenty to your heirs. The reverse mortgage generally gives you the most income, but leaves even less to your heirs. In 15 years, I’ve met only one person who said they wanted to sacrifice their own lifestyle for the sole purpose of leaving a larger estate to their kids. If you would enjoy more income, then a refinance, cash out or a reverse mortgage is for you. Feel free to contact our office and ask for the Home Equity Income Assessment. We can send you this personal analysis showing how much additional income you could have. During the month of February, we are waiving the fee for all readers of Life After 50, so simply call our office. ✦

One Window, Two Reflections
Having just celebrated 33 years of marriage, actress Cheryl Ladd and her husband, producer and author Brian Russell, reveal how they keep love and romance alive

"We see through the same window."
A
set of blueprints for a magnificent house is rolled out on the dining room table of a home nestled into a canyon on the outskirts of Solvang, California. Poring over them is a strapping gentleman and a beautiful woman. “We’re great buddies and friends,” says the gentleman as he leaves the plans and strolls over to a couch in the adjacent den where he is soon joined by the beautiful woman to whom he has been married for over three decades. “Thirty-three years in January,” she states proudly as she settles into the couch and rests her head on his shoulder. “That’s like 125 in Hollywood years.” And to what do the beautiful woman – actress Cheryl Ladd – and the strapping gent – producer and author Brian Russell – attribute their many years of wedded
bliss? “My patience,” Brian reveals without a second’s hesitation. “And I’m a saint,” Cheryl adds with equal rapidity. Brian throws his head back with a laugh and Cheryl giggles over their respective answers as the couple’s labradoodle, Crockett, jumps up and snuggles in beside them. “Cheryl and I were both married before,” says Brian. “Why do some marriages work and some don’t? I think it’s just a matter of being with the right person.” Cheryl shakes her head in agreement. “You know why our marriage works?” says Brian. “It’s because of something Cheryl once said that I love. She said ‘We see through the same window.’ ”

The Last Thing on Their Minds
While the window through which Brian and Cheryl view love and life is today one and the same, the thought that they would have ever been mutually peering through a single portal as a couple was the last thing on either of their minds when they were first introduced by legendary record producer David Foster in 1974. At the time, the South Dakota-born Cheryl had already begun to make her mark in Hollywood as an actress and recording artist. Having broken into the business under the name Cherie Moor, she provided the singing voice of Melody on the Hanna-Barbera animated series, “Josie and the Pussycats.” That led to a recording contract and acting roles in commercials and on some of the most successful television series of the time including “The Rookies,” “The Partridge Family” and “Happy Days.” Married to actor and film producer David Ladd, son of the legendary actor Alan Ladd, Cheryl did not exactly have the look of a potential future wife when Brian, who was working as a singer and record producer, first laid his eyes on her. “I was very pregnant with my daughter, Jordan, when we first met,” says Cheryl. “ ‘Very’ being the operative word there,” Brian quickly interjects with a laugh. “She was VERY pregnant – as in fill-the-room pregnant. So she was hard to miss.” While Cheryl and her then-husband, David, were only weeks away from becoming parents, Brian and his then-wife, singer Brenda Russell, were still three years away from welcoming their daughter, Lindsay. Just like Cheryl, the Scottish-born Brian had also achieved success in the recording industry, first as a member of the husband-and-wife duo Brian & Brenda and then as a sought-after writer, composer and producer who was signed to Elton John’s Rocket Records and worked with numerous musicians and bands including Ann Murray, Paul Simon, Steely Dan and Chaka Kahn.
The Advent Of An Angel
While Brian continued to build on his recording career, Cheryl’s star didn’t just ascend, it exploded in super-nova style in 1977, when she was cast to replace Farrah Fawcett-Majors as the original angel’s younger sister, Kris Monroe, in the ABC super hit “Charlie’s Angels.” Having been heavily pursued by “Charlie’s Angels” producer Aaron Spelling to replace Farrah, who unexpectedly wanted off the year-old sensation, Cheryl says when she was offered the role she didn’t play hard-to-get as much as she just wasn’t really interested. “The show had only been on for one season and, while I was aware it was a big hit, I had never seen it,” Cheryl admits. “I had worked for Aaron doing small parts on various shows and, in the wake of Farrah’s leaving, he wanted me to replace her.” Explaining that she wasn’t really sure what the show was about, she said she knew enough about it that she didn’t think it was where she wanted to go with her career. “I told Aaron I just wasn’t interested, so he looked at a lot of other girls and wasn’t finding what he was looking for. Then, one evening, I ran into him at The Palm restaurant and he asked if I would just come in and talk to him about it again. So I did and he asked me about my reservations.” As the two talked, Cheryl told Spelling she may be interested if the character was more than just a Farrah replacement. “I really wanted to do a character that was funny,” Cheryl says. “So as we continued to talk, we came up with the idea that the character could be the kid sister of Farrah’s character. That was when I perked up and felt that there may be something there that I could develop. I said I would want her to be a rookie who really wanted to do a great job, but would make mistakes and be a little quirky. Aaron looked at me, said ‘done’ and that was it.” Accepting the role, Cheryl would become the second longest-tenured Angel, after Jaclyn Smith, remaining with the show until its final season in 1981. “When I look back on that time I can’t believe it. I had a two-year-old daughter and a husband and was doing ‘Charlie’s Angels’ 14 hours a day, five days a week, nine months a year,” says Cheryl. “Then there were the photo shoots and commercials and recording work. I guess when you’re in your early 20s, you have the energy to do that, but I clearly remember it as being very stressful. That was during the wave of women being told they were Superwoman and could have it all. I love that whole concept, but actually fulfilling it was a lot of pressure. Sometimes, I look back at my work from that time – my acting and my recording – and think I could have done some things better. But whenever I catch myself thinking that, I feel, in reality, I couldn’t have done any better given the circumstances and the pressure I was under. I think the hardest part of being in 14 LIFEAFTER50.COM February 2014
that pressure cooker was not having the time for my daughter. The hours I spent away from my little girl when she was very young were very difficult.”
From Friends To Lovers
Parlaying her stardom as an Angel into a successful recording career, 1978 saw Brian and Cheryl cross paths again as they worked together on her first album, “Cheryl Ladd,” which peaked at number 34 on the Billboard music chart. “There was no romantic relationship at all,” says Cheryl. “Brian and I were working together and were friends. Then, as time went by, Brian and Brenda got divorced and I got separated and knew my marriage would be coming to an end.” As divorced parents with two young girls, Brian and Cheryl began looking at one another a bit differently than they ever had before. “By 1980, our friend-
ship had bloomed into something more,” says Cheryl. “That was fun – falling in love with an old friend. I already knew a lot about him and had always admired the relationship he had with his daughter. I was a young parent and was always impressed at how capable he was in raising Lindsay. He was alone with her a lot of the time when she was very young, because Brenda was doing a lot of touring at the time.” “There is no better lure than being a single dad with a cute two-year-old,” Brian interjects with a laugh. “That’s my tip for guys. It always works.” After the couple married in 1981, Cheryl continued to record and act on Broadway, in feature films and numerous episodic television programs and films. Brian continued to write and produce in the music industry working with various artists that, as the years went by, would include Kanye West, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Coldplay, Straylight Run, Envy on the Coast, The Academy Is and Anterrabae. He also pro-
duced both feature films and television, including “The Grace Kelly Story” and a mid-1990s CBS series, “One West Waikiki,” both of which starred Cheryl. Transitioning from the visual and music world, Brian and Cheryl also coauthored a children’s book, “The Adventures of Little Nettie Windship” (Dove Books, 1996) and eight years later, Cheryl wrote “Token Chick: A Woman’s Guide to Golfing With the Boys” (Miramax, 2005), an autobiographical book that focused on her love of golf.
Building A New Life
Along with producing music, film, television and books, Brian has also produced homes. Passionate about designing and building, he has designed luxury homes as well as houses in the slums of Uganda. While that work has brought February 2014 LIFEAFTER50.COM 15
16 LIFEAFTER50.COM February 2014
him a great sense of pride and accomplishment, perhaps nothing has brought the excitement of his current undertaking – building what, by next year, will be the couple’s primary residence in Boerne, Texas, just outside of San Antonio. “We are in the middle of designing and building our new home,” says Brian. “Cheryl and I love houses and we are obsessed with going over the plans. We can sit and do that for hours. We have both designed and built houses before and, because we do see things through the same window, we share tastes, so there is rarely an argument over anything.” He says that a perfect day for him is going over blueprints, spending time at the site and shopping for things that will fill their new home. “I’m a real homebody, so I’m excited about everything we are doing to prepare for our new home,” says Brian. “Cheryl has family in Texas and our daughter and her children live in Austin, which is only an hour-and-a-half from us. We can’t wait to move in, although we will still keep our home in California.” “Building this house really is an extension of the many projects we have worked on together,” says Cheryl. “Whether it has been music projects or television projects or building our home, we have formed a great partnership. We have great respect for one another and really enjoy creating together.” Brian nods in agreement. “I always say we are ten times as good together as we are individually,” he interjects. “But Cheryl just says that between us, we have one really good mind,” he adds with a laugh.
A New Venture
While the building of their new home takes up the majority of his time, Brian’s last major project was something he had never done before and one that he went alone – the writing of his debut novel “SCRIBE” (Kengorus Publishing/ Amazon, 2013). “I felt a bit abandoned for about a year-and-ahalf while he was writing the book,” laughs Cheryl. “At nine in the morning, he would go to work in a different part of the house and at noon, I would poke my head in to see how he was doing. He would work until four and then we would have dinner together. But during that time, even when he wasn’t working, I could always see that his mind was constantly in the book. I understand that. I have been the same way
when I’m acting – totally invested in the part and the work and the creation of a character. Also, the story has a complexity that, in order for him to tell it properly, demanded that he stay extremely focused.” A romantic and atmospheric supernatural thriller set in Kilbride, an idyllic Scottish country town that was once home to a murderous tyrant and the site of an epic battle for independence from England, “SCRIBE” transports readers to a now-tranquil little corner of the world in which a pub band led by a local beauty serves as the only diversion from the villagers' otherwise peaceful life. That all changes when a Hollywood director, John MacIntyre, and his beautiful movie star wife, Valerie, come to town making things a lot more interesting – and deadly. “I became totally immersed in the story and the characters,” Brian explains. “I really felt, as some other writers do, that I was merely a participant in the writing of the book. I was doing the work, but a lot of it was inspiration. I don’t know if that comes from God or a higher power but I did not plan out the story as some writers do. I just sat down and let it evolve and so the characters were always changing. I could not wait to get up and get to the computer every day, because I couldn’t wait to see what my characters had in store for me that day.” Holding the manuscript back from Cheryl till he had completed a first draft, he finally asked her to read it and give her input. “As I sat reading it, I had tears rolling down my face,” says Cheryl. “Brian freaked out. He jumped up and said, ‘IS IT THAT BAD?’ I laughed and said I was crying because it was ‘THAT GOOD!’ I was so moved by the story and I believe readers really get involved with his characters, because they are so imperfect and yet you love them for their imperfections, which are the ones we see in ourselves. I think the reason there has been so much positive response to this book is because readers can relate to the feelings and disappointments and truths of the characters. The characters are real and flawed and yet you want to take this journey with them. It’s a book that deserves to be read.” With a sequel in the works, Brian says he is happy he has decided to do a follow-up book. “Those characters really became friends of mine,” he says with a smile. “So I’m glad that I will still have more time with them.”
Beginning The Next Chapter
With a new home and Brian’s second book in the works, Cheryl says they both keep very busy and she gives little thought to age. “As I have gotten older, I have come to realize that health is the most important thing. Health is freedom and hope,” she opines. “Keeping yourself healthy and fit to the best of your ability is what brings joy, so I really work on keeping myself in good shape.” When asked if he has adopted any philosophy on getting older, Brian says he has too much going on for that to cross his mind. “We are people of deep faith and have been really blessed,” he says. “I’m in the last quarter of my life and really had no intentions of changing everything as dramatically as we have. There was a part of me that just wanted to sit back relax and watch television. Then we ended up deciding to move to Texas and start all over again. I never thought I would be doing this at my age, but I tell you, it has made me feel ten years younger. Every day I get up and deal with something new. It’s exciting and remarkably energizing. We’re not just building a new house, were building the next chapter of our life – new windows to look out of together. That is keeping me young.” For more information on “SCRIBE” and to order your copy, click on www.scribewriter.comª

The Possibility of Love After 50 By Lisa Copeland
It can only happen if you embrace the possibility of it happening
20 LIFEAFTER50.COM February 2014
s a dating coach who primarily works with people over 50, hardly a day goes by when I don’t speak with men and women who wonder if it is really possible to find love in their second half of life. It never ceases to interest, amaze, educate, and sometimes amuse me to hear what people are looking for in a potential mate. Women – just as they did when they were in their teens – dream of a romantic Prince Charming who will come riding into their lives on a beautiful white horse (although, in Southern California, the horse is just a metaphor for a Porsche) to be their best friend, lover and protector. They imagine their newfound prince taking them to the finest restaurants and on exotic travels. They picture him placing them on a pedestal and providing for them so they can spend their days lunching and shopping to their heart’s content.
Lisa Copeland is one of the nation’s top dating coaches and her new book, “The Winning Dating Formula For Women Over 50” is an Amazon bestseller.
Meanwhile, On the Other Side of the Gender Equator… Men dream of having a beautiful woman on their arm, one who would never think of nagging him or ever consider questioning anything he does. Their fantasy continues as they imagine this vision of beauty looking great in anything from jeans to an elegant dress, being a gourmet cook, and a passionate lover who, try as she may, just can’t seem to heap enough appreciation, respect and praise upon him. And so both sexes go wandering around, looking to fulfill these fantasies, searching for these romance novel heroes and centerfold beauties they believe will make their lives so much better. Unfortunately, what most end up with is tremendous disappointment and frustration when they can’t find these elusive beings of perfection. It really is amazing how similar most people’s stories are. I rarely speak with anyone – male or female, gay or straight – who thought they would find themselves entering the latter part of their lives alone for one reason or another. As for those who are divorced or have left a long-term relationship, most simply grew to a point in which they could no longer tolerate the unhappiness they were feeling and had grown tired of trying to make it work. Universally, these folks tell me they believed the grass really would be – would HAVE to be – greener in the pastures of singeldom. But – and again, this is pretty much universal – things didn’t quite work out the way they expected. Unable to find the person of their dreams, many give up and adopt the feeling that they like being single and free to do as they please. Others never lose hope and are constantly out their trying. For those who are still trying to find love again, there is good news! You can be successful in finding love, if you are willing to keep open to any and all possibilities and approach dating in a nonpressured, sensible and realistic way.
Love Thyself First Whenever I begin working with a new client, I always ask them to take a four-to-six week dating hiatus. Invariably, when I say that, I hear a sigh of relief when they realize they can give themselves permission to get off the dating merry-go-round for a while. Dating, at any age, can be tough. It can not only bruise the ego, but it can also bring back all the rejection that happened earlier in one’s life. When you are out in that cold and sometimes cruel dating world, it can seem like everyone has figured it out except you – and that they are not even going to think of letting you in on the secret. Of course, that’s not true. Looking for that Mr. or Ms Right can be exhausting, which is why I hear that sigh of relief when I ask clients to stop dating for a bit and to take some time to get to know themselves again – to nurture themselves, stop thinking of what they are looking for and to begin making a list of what positive qualities they can bring to a relationship. I have my clients figure out what they enjoy doing and then encourage them to get out there and do it, whether it’s taking a class, playing golf, going to the theatre or concerts, or just relaxing at a local bar. Rediscovering what makes you tick sparks the passion you once had about yourself and your life before you were a couple, or divorced, or widowed. Nurturing that inner passion can work wonders in how it can make you both more confident about yourself and attractive to a potential mate.
February 2014 LIFEAFTER50.COM 21
Be Open to Possibilities Once you’ve gotten your own personal passion in gear again, it’s time to take a look at the mindset you’re using for choosing the special person you want to share your life with. Today, instead of churches, bars or the office, most singles over 50 turn to online dating sites to search for a person who meets their criteria that includes a particular set of qualities such as physical attractiveness, good health, similar backgrounds, interests, religious and political beliefs, financial security and career status, just to name a few. I call this “take-out-order dating.” I recall once, going on a dating site and reading a man’s profile in which he described his perfect mate. He wrote: “The woman I’m looking to share my life with must be blonde, petite, slim, funny and have a great job.” I remember laughing and thinking that this guy must believe he can just put in his order for a woman like he was ordering a pizza and, in no time, she will be delivered to his door. There is a flaw with this way of thinking – that happiness comes by way of your significant other’s appearance or status in life. You may think these qualities are important, and, frankly, back in your 20s, they probably were. That’s because your DNA, programmed back during the dawn of time, was speaking to you. When you were 20, you needed to find someone who was strong, healthy and had the skills required to raise a family and establish a career, home and life. Today, with your 20s in the rearview mirror, your criteria for a partner are (hopefully) no longer about making and raising babies and establishing a career.
Now it’s about who would make a great partner to grow older with. Qualities such as kindness, compassion and caring should completely eclipse the ones you had when you were in high school or college. “Take-out-order dating” contributes to so much of the frustration men and women feel in dating when they are over 50. Dating becomes an exercise in constant frustration when you find that your unrealistically perfect person simply isn’t out there and that people half your age see you as a parental figure, not a love interest. I know how that feels, and I also know how easy it can be to start feeling like there is no one out there for you and how easy it would be to just quit the search and resign yourself to being single. But here’s the thing: I can assure you there are plenty of people out there who could make you happy if you were willing to set aside the “take-out-order dating” and try “out-of-the-box dating.”
Get Out of Your Comfort Zone One of the first things I recommend to clients is that they try dating someone they wouldn’t have ever considered going out with in the past – even someone who is the absolute opposite of what they would have ever considered beforehand. This can feel pretty scary and uncomfortable, so I also recommend they take it slow. To start, this could be something as simple as choosing someone with a different hair color than your usual type or a person who is not in your desired age range.

Have Some Fun The typical mindset for a first date is one of doing mini-interviews for the job of a spouse or significant other. Before a cup of coffee is even finished, most people have decided whether the person sitting across from them could be a potential mate. This is really unfair to both parties. No one is himself or herself on a first date. Plus, when you get the feeling you are being interviewed, you become stressed, wondering if you’ll pass this test you’re being given. And what happens? Neither party ends up having any fun. As an alternative to looking for a mate on a first date, I recommend people consider going on a date to simply meet and get to know someone new and interesting. Laugh and get to know this new person with no agenda other than to have fun. In our younger days, we hung out and got to know each other. Our first date was not a “mate test.” We became friends first, then possibly lovers, before we made the decision to establish a real relationship with someone. I advise people to slow down and really get to know someone while also speeding up in terms of how much dating they are doing. I coach my clients to date more than one person at a time until they find someone with whom they wish to become exclusive. Everyone who is single is looking for companions, friends, lovers, dates for special occasions or parties, along with someone who will always have their
back and with whom they may be able to establish a loving and possibly longterm relationship. Here’s the beauty of dating over 50: That can be more than one person. Some of your dates might just become great friends and, you never know, over time, that friendship may blossom into something more – or not. In spite of conventional wisdom, there actually is a lot to love about dating when you are over 50. If you can allow yourself to give up the pressure of finding the perfect mate, you will find it’s a wonderful and rewarding thing to simply meet and make new friends. So, as this Valentine’s Day nears, try dating someone different. Make new friends. Enjoy the company of being with people who are from a different world than you typically are a part of. And, most importantly, just have fun. Remember: Finding someone who may not be perfect, but could turn out to be perfect for you, can only happen when you open yourself up and embrace the possibility of that happening. WHERE DO I INVEST MY MONEY NOW? Many investors are trying to make sense from the stock market’s continued highs and the US economy’s lack luster performance. With debt and unemployment still at all time highs, GDP continuing to drop, and inflation beginning to knock on our door, where do you turn to invest your retirement. . You definitely have to own property as it is the best hedge against inflation and currency devaluation, but you also need liquidity as well. One must find a liquid investment that pays better than a 0.25% bank money market so your portfolio does not lose value based on time value of money and the constant devaluation of our currency. One solution for a safe and guaranteed investment is PMF Investment Notes which pays 7.39% interest per year. These notes are short term notes of 13-months in duration, and are very safe because they are invested in “corporate accounts receivables” from major companies like CostCo, Walmart and many other credit worthy companies. Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid: American Experience New Documentary, PBS – Premieres Tuesday, February 11 at 9 p.m. Long before Paul Newman and Robert Redford immortalized them onscreen, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid captivated Americans from coast to coast. In the 1890s, their exploits – robbing banks and trains in the West and then seemingly vanishing into thin air – became national news and the basis of rumors and myth. But who were Robert Leroy Parker and Harry Alonzo Longabaugh? How did they come together to form the Wild Bunch Gang? And how did they manage to pull off the longest string of successful holdups in history while eluding Pinkerton – the nation’s most-feared detective force? Separating fact from fiction, this “American Experience” special explores the last pair of outlaws to flee on horseback into the setting sun.
National Theatre: 50 Years On Stage New special, PBS – Premieres Friday February 14 at 9 p.m. (check local listings) The National Theatre opened its doors in 1963 with Laurence Olivier as its first director. Eight hundred productions later, the venerable institution celebrates its 50th anniversary with a starry cast of theatrical legends to applaud the remarkable people and plays that have made the National Theatre one of the most cherished and creative wellsprings of international theater: from premieres of plays by Tom Stoppard, Peter Shaffer, Harold Pinter, Alan Bennett and David Hare, to outstanding revivals of classic plays and musicals. Directed by the theater’s artistic director, Nicholas Hytner, the star-studded evening also features rare glimpses from the archives spotlighting many of the most celebrated actors who have performed on the National’s stages over the past five decades.

Sting: The Last Ship New Music Special, PBS – Premieres Friday February 21 at 9 p.m. As part of the “Great Performances” series, this new special features Sting, the Grammy Award-winning musician, performing songs from his new album (and forthcoming Broadway play), “The Last Ship.” It is an intimate evening of music and storytelling live from The Public Theater in New York City. Drawing upon his childhood memories growing up in the shipbuilding community of Wallsend in the North East of England, Sting provides a glimpse into the narrative of the play through the songs and a unique insight into the creative process. With a backdrop of evocative visual projections, he shares his experience emerging from a songwriting hiatus to pen his first album of original material in nearly a decade and his very first musical theater score, incorporating a mix of genres and styles ranging from pub-like folk tunes to ballads to a wall of sound from the full band.
The Best In February Television By Sandi Berg
The Trip To Bountiful New Movie, Lifetime – Premieres Saturday February 22 at 8 p.m. This beautiful Horton Foote play has a long and storied pedigree. It was originally written for television in 1953, before making its Broadway debut a year later. It was eventually turned into a film in 1985, winning Geraldine Page an Academy Award for Best Actress. It was revived on Broadway again in 2013, winning Cicely Tyson a Tony Award for Best Actress. This adaptation is based on that latest Broadway version, with Tyson and Vanessa Williams reprising their roles. Joining this version are Blair Underwood and Keke Palmer in the profound story about family, loneliness, and going home again.
The Red Road New Series, Sundance Channel – Premieres Thursday February 29 at 9 p.m. This new series, starring stars Martin Henderson, Jason Momoa, Julianne Nicholson, Lisa Bonet, and Tom Sizemore, is a hard-hitting drama that revolves around a local cop struggling to keep his family together while policing two clashing communities: the small New Jersey town where he grew up and the neighboring mountains, home of a Native American tribe. After a terrible tragedy and cover-up occurs involving the cop’s wife, an unholy alliance is forged between the cop and an ex-con, a dangerous member of the tribe, that will come back to haunt all involved.

W
ith February being heart-health month, it is the perfect time to get to know the most important muscle in your body, and improve your relationship with it. Your heart is a powerful machine, pumping oxygenrich blood to your brain and other organs and transporting waste and carbon dioxide out. Taking care of your heart is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your overall health and well-being. More than one-million Americans suffer heart attacks each year and approximately half of them don’t survive. Increased risk of heart failure and heart disease are influenced by a number of factors, not all of which we can control, such as age and race. However, you can lower your risk through healthy eating and exercise habits. When plaque, a buildup of cholesterol and other material, grows in your arteries, it can lead to blockages in blood flow and a loss of flexibility in the heart muscles, which can be potentially fatal. To manage this, limit the intake of saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol in your diet by choosing lean meats, such as poultry and fish. Fish are also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help lower your risk as well. Whole-grain and high-fiber foods can also help lower your blood cholesterol levels. Maintaining a balanced diet high in fruits and vegetables is essential to all aspects of health, supplying your body with the vitamins, minerals, and fiber it needs, without the calories it doesn’t. Regular exercise is also extremely important for maintaining cardiovascular health, and the American Heart Association recommends at least 30-minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity five days a week. This includes running, biking, swimming and any other physical activity that gets you out of the chair and your blood pumping. The heart is a muscle, after all, and you can make it stronger through exercise. Removing habits such as smoking and heavy drinking from your life, as well as maintaining a healthy weight, are incredibly important for a fit and healthy heart. We often look at the heart and the mind as two opposing components of our body, two equal but opposite forces that combine to give us life and conscience. But in reality, they are two sides of the same coin, and, in fact, are more inter-connected than we may know. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that clinically depressed women had more than twice the risk of other women to suffer sudden cardiac death. Another study found that men who were aggressive and angry in their day-to-day lives (as opposed to professionally aggressive) had a 19-percent greater risk of coronary heart disease than those with a lighter demeanor. The concept that stress is bad for your health is certainly not new, but the clear association between chronic stress and strain on the heart is becoming too clear, and potentially life-threatening, to ignore. A 2007 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that patients who had a heart attack and then returned to a stressful job were twice as likely to suffer a second attack than those who viewed their jobs as more stress-free. And, while you may not be able to quit your job, you may be able to change how you cope with it. Deep breathing exercises, meditation, and taking short walks outside when you are in stressful situations are important to building the awareness you need to realize when you are stressed, and taking the first steps to removing the stress from your life. Regular exercise will also reduce your stress and help reduce your risk of cardiac diseases as discussed earlier. Getting enough sleep is also extremely important for not just regulating stress, but avoiding heart risk in general, especially for women. A 2008 study from Duke University showed a consistent correlation between poor sleeping habits and higher levels of risk factors for heart disease and diabetes in women. While we all have stress, how we manage it defines our ability to stay fit and productive in our daily lives. That’s why you should examine your choices carefully, and choose ones that will build upon and reinforce a healthy and active lifestyle. Making good choices will directly affect your capacity to have a strong and healthy heart, and therefore will lead to a longer and happier life. ✦

Dr. Ruth The iconic sex therapist shares her thoughts on living and loving after 50 By David Laurell

“
I
am very busy,” says the world’s most famous living sex therapist, Dr. Ruth Westheimer. “I am 85 and I’m as busy as I’ve ever been. I’m on the board of the Museum of Jewish Heritage, so, I do work with them, and I am also working on another new book I have coming out in the spring.” Exuding a demeanor that is more serious and efficient than the exuberant, eversmiling and often-giggling one that made her a cultural icon, media personality and prolific author, Dr. Ruth says there are few things she feels are as important as keeping busy. “As people get older, they have to remain active,” she states emphatically. “I’m not just talking about staying active sexually. I’m saying that you have to be active in every way. You have to keep your brain active. I always recommend, no matter what age someone is, that they continue to develop new interests and even get involved in things they may have never been involved with before in their lives. I have nothing against television, but you can’t just sit on a

couch and watch television. Everyone, of every age, needs to get off the couch and do something. You have to stay busy.” Dr. Ruth has always been busy. She was the first psychosexual therapist to bring frank and open discussions about sexual matters into people’s homes with her late-night radio program, “Sexually Speaking,” which debuted in September of 1980 on New York’s WYNY-FM. Although it was only a 15-minute program that aired after midnight, word of the show, its quirky, heavily-accented host, and its foray into the most intimate and taboo of subjects, rapidly spread. Within a year, the station made it a live, one-hour, call-in show that aired at 10 p.m. and served as a harbinger for the Dr. Ruth media onslaught that was to come.
The Roots of Ruth
Born in Wiesenfeld, Germany in 1928, Karola Ruth Siegel, the only child of Orthodox Jews, was sent to a Swiss orphanage when she was 10-years old to escape the Holocaust. Seven years later, after learning her parents had been killed by the Nazis, possibly at Auschwitz, she went to Israel where she fought for that country’s independence as a member of the Haganah, the Jewish freedom fighters. Trained as a scout and a sniper, she was wounded in action during the Israeli War of Independence in 1948, and was unable to walk for several months. As a young woman, she was drawn to education, which led her to Paris where she studied at the Sorbonne and taught kindergarten. Immigrating to the United States in 1956, she continued her education, obtaining a masters degree in sociology from the Graduate Faculty of the New School of Social Research, followed by a doctorate of education in interdisciplinary study of the family from Columbia University Teachers College. Armed with her degrees, she accepted a position with Planned Parenthood that prompted her to further her education in human sexuality by studying under Dr. Helen Singer Kaplan at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center. She later participated in the program as an adjunct associate professor and also
went on to teach at Lehman College, Brooklyn College, Adelphi University, Columbia University and West Point. Twice married and divorced, she entered the 1960s as the mother of a young girl, Miriam, from her second marriage, and in 1961, married Manfred Westheimer, a union that would produce a son, Joel, and would last until Manfred’s death in 1997. While she claims to have never given any thought to embarking on a career in mass media, her radio program blossomed into a local New York television program that was soon syndicated nationally and served as the springboard for various incarnations of her television show, documentaries, magazine articles, a syndicated newspaper column, website, and over 35 books. Named by Playboy magazine as one of the most important people in sex, she was also chosen as one of People magazine’s Most Intriguing People of the 20th Century.
On Sex After 50
While Dr. Ruth has covered every aspect of human sexuality throughout her career, one of her most popular books, “Dr. Ruth’s Sex After 50: Revving up the Romance, Passion & Excitement!” (Quill Driver Books, 2005) chronicled the joie de vivre of maintaining an active sexual life into an advanced age. “That book won a National Mature Media award,” boasts Dr. Ruth. “It has been extremely popular with baby boomers that are experiencing the age-related physical changes that are a natural part of aging for both men and women and can have a negative effect on physical intimacy.” Asked if the baby boomers are, in any way, unique in terms of their attitudes towards sex, having been a part of the free love generation, Dr. Ruth adamantly waves off that categorization. “I do not believe that baby boomers were the so called ‘free love’ generation,” she states authoritatively. “I think there was a very small segment of the population in the 1960s and early 1970s who experimented with swinging or having free love with multiple partners. That small group got a lot of media attention, but they were in no way the majority. Most people of that time, especially young people, were no freer in the way they conducted themselves sexually than those of other generations before or after.” While Dr. Ruth says the majority of boomers weren’t as sexually free as the media made them out to be, she does believe they have become freer in one respect. “What people of the baby boomer generation and their children are freer about today is talking about sex,” she opines. Asked if she is the reason for that, she accepts that but adds that there were those who came before her who also blazed a path that made it possible for people to have more open communication on the subject of sex. “Yes, I am a part of that,” she says. “But there were many others who have also been responsible for that – (Alfred) Kinsey and (William) Masters and (Virginia) Johnson and Dr. Helen Singer Kaplan.” Having always emphasized that, above all else, the brain is the most important sexual organ in the body, Dr. Ruth believes that is even more the case with aging men and women. She says that when it comes to problems such as vaginal dryness or erectile dysfunction, people should be very open in discussing these things with their doctors, be medically evaluated, and then explore proper treatment options. “Of course, there are medical issues that can affect sex negatively. But the libido comes from the brain, so you have to speak with your doctor first, because if there is a medical factor, it must be taken care of. But many times, when someone’s sex life isn’t working properly, it is more likely that they have a psychological problem and not a physical one,” she explains Although she is as associated with sex as anyone else on the planet, Dr. Ruth is the first to say she is, and always has been, an advocate of sexual morality. “I am old-fashioned,” she says with her famous laugh. “To me, sex has to be within a relationship and that means romance has to be a part of it. I don’t believe in one-night stands or open marriages or promiscuity. I want people to work at their relationships, although I’m not at all opposed to people getting divorced if a marriage isn’t working. I know sometimes it just cannot work out and I don’t think people should sacrifice their happiness just to stay in a bad marriage.”
Lonely? Make A Valentine’s Day Resolution
With Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching, Dr. Ruth says that people should think of February 14 as more of a time to make resolutions than on January 1. “Loneliness is one of the biggest fears people have as they get older, absolutely,” she says. “For those who are alone this Valentine’s Day, they should make a resolution that they will do something to have a relationship by next Valentine’s Day.” Asked if she can offer any advice on how to go about doing that, Dr. Ruth says she understands the Internet can be a tremendous resource for meeting people,
but one that should be approached with great caution. “I am very worried about the impact the Internet has had – is having – on people,” she says. “There are great dangers for children, but also for older people who meet someone through the Internet. They have to be extremely careful about exchanging personal information until they have met the person they are communicating with and have formed a relationship and really know that the person is who they say they are. I don’t want people to be lonely, and I know the Internet can be good for people who are looking to meet someone, but they have to use their brains in order to know who they are sharing information with.”
A Generous Person Makes For A Good Lover
In regards to her latest book, “Dr. Ruth’s Guide for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver” (Quill Driver Books, 2012), Dr. Ruth says she wanted to help the millions of Americans who take care of loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease. The book presents the best strategies, tactics, tips, tricks, resources and attitudes to create the most-supportive environment possible for caregivers and their loved ones. In her classic brisk, practical, respectful and reassuring style, Dr. Ruth offers practical solutions to caregivers’ most pressing problems, such as getting enough help, coping with negative emotions, reducing physical and mental exhaustion, and maintaining their own quality of life. She is also putting the finishing touches on another book she will release in April. “I believe, especially as we get older, we must be grateful for what we have and we must help those who we care about and who are less fortunate,” she says. “The book that I am working on right now is called ‘The Scrooge Effect.’ It is for people who are not generous – those that have the financial means, but do not give to charities or do something to help others. I have found that people who are not charitable are also not good lovers. A good lover is generous and rejoices in being able to give pleasure to their partner. My book is about overcoming the defect of not being a generous and giving person.”
Being Dr. Ruth – It’s Fun and Fantastic!
Having generously given so much to so many people throughout her own life, Dr. Ruth doesn’t hesitate for a second when asked what her greatest accomplishments have been. “My children and my four grandchildren,” she snaps. “Next question.” And professionally? “Professionally, my greatest accomplishment has come in helping people who I hear from every day,” she says. “I get comments from people all the time telling me that I have helped them in one way or another. Just yesterday I had a woman thank me for letting her know it was okay to get out of a bad marriage and seek a divorce. I also just heard from an older woman who said she was appreciative that I helped her deal with her feelings about masturbation.” So, she is asked to confirm, it sounds like it is rather fun being Dr. Ruth. That’s a good question,” she says as she breaks into the characteristic giggle she is so well-known for. “It’s not just fun, it’s fantastic. I am always very busy and everywhere I go, I walk down the street and everybody knows me from my radio or television shows or my books. People are always coming up to me and thanking me. That is very gratifying and nice.” For more information on Dr. Ruth and her books, click on www.drruth.com ✦

Winning the War on Heart Disease New breakthroughs, coupled with knowledge and proper lifestyle choices, are the best weapons to fight the war on America’s leading cause of death Compiled by Maxine Andrews
32 LIFEAFTER50.COM February 2014
T
his month, as we celebrate the affairs of the heart by exchanging chocolates, roses and cards, it is important to remember that along with Valentine’s Day, February is also American Heart Month. According to the National Heart Association, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. Every day, on an average of every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack. The chance of developing coronary heart disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control factors that put people at greater risk. Additionally, knowing the signs and symptoms of heart attack are crucial to the most positive outcomes after having a heart attack. People who have survived a heart attack can also work to reduce their risk of another heart attack or a stroke in the future.
type of vasodilator, helps during episodes of acute heart failure by improving blood flow throughout the body. It may also reduce inflammation, which could otherwise cause damage to the kidneys, liver, and heart.
In late 2013, physicians and researchers at the Cleveland Clinic made their annual selections for what medical breakthroughs they believe will shape healthcare in the coming year. Among the advances that made their Top 10 Medical Innovations list for 2014 were two – a biomarker called trimethylamine N-oxide and the drug Serelaxin – that promise to help those suffering from heart disease. To receive consideration, a new treatment or medical device must provide a significant benefit to patients, improve the delivery of healthcare, have a high likelihood of success, and be currently available or expected to be available within the year.
A Healthy Lifestyle is the Best Weapon
When assessing a patient’s risk for heart disease, physicians test for certain biomarkers such as cholesterol levels that may foretell the potentially lethal health condition. Scientists have now discovered what may be an important new biomarker, called trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), which could be a useful screening tool for people who don’t have traditional risk factors. Trimethylamine N-oxide is a byproduct of intestinal bacteria, and a study in the New England Journal of Medicine reported this year that those with the highest levels of TMAO had double the risk of cardiovascular events. This research indicates that the microbes that live in our digestive tracts may be able to give us important clues about the risk of stroke and heart attack. Experts suggest that doctors may soon be able to personalize diets for their patients to better prevent heart disease based on levels of TMAO. Studies published in 2013 indicate that the concentration of TMAO in the blood increases after consuming foods containing carnitine or lecithin if the bacteria that convert those substances to TMAO are present in the gut. High concentrations of carnitine are found in red meat, some energy drinks, and some dietary supplements; lecithin is found in eggs and as an ingredient in processed food.

Know the Signs and Symptoms
While the medical community has made, and continues to make, great strides in combating heart disease, surviving a heart attack begins with the person affected or someone close to them recognizing the signs and symptoms that call for immediate medical help. While some heart attacks are sudden and intense, most start slowly with mild pain or discomfort. Often, people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Remember, most heart attacks involve shortness of breath and discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. There can also be discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness. In spite of all the innovations in heart care, to a large extent, when it comes to maintaining a healthy heart, eating a healthy diet and making wise lifestyle choices are the best weapons you have to fight heart disease. As you make daily choices, base your eating and exercising patterns on these recommendations: • Choose lean meats and poultry without skin and prepare them without added saturated and trans fat. • Select fat-free, one-percent fat, and low-fat dairy products.
• Cut back on foods high in dietary cholesterol. Aim to eat less than 300 mg of cholesterol each day. • Cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars. •
Choose and prepare foods with little or no salt. Aim to eat less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day. All persons who have hypertension along with middle-aged and older adults should consume no more than 1,500 mg of sodium per day.
• If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. That means no more than one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. • Physical activity in your daily life is an important step to preventing heart disease. You can take a few simple steps at home, at work, and at play to increase the amount of physical activity in your life.

It Was 50 Years Ago Today, That The Beatles Hit The USA Infused with lyrics of love, the Liverpudlian lads gave us songs that are as beloved today as when we first heard them By Max Andrews
W
I
hile it is, perhaps, a bit much for baby boomers to conceive, there are now people who are over 50 who are not a part of their generation. This year, with the first wave of Generation Xers hitting the half-century mark, it now means there are people reading this magazine who have no recollection of a time without The Beatles. Of course there are even some boomers – those under 55 – who also have no memory of a Beatleless world. As for those who have past their mid-50s, some of their oldest and fondest memories surround events that occurred 50 years ago this month as that quartet of Liverpudlian lads first touched American soil on February 7, and, two days later, made their United States television debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Seen by an estimated 73 million viewers, the appearance of the Mops Tops on the Sullivan show became a seminal moment in pop culture history and the catalyst for a mid-1960s British Invasion of American popular music. Both collectively as a band, and separately as solo artists, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr infused their songs with lyrics of love that gave the world a long and winding roadmap for the way we have come to think of love. They told us that money couldn’t buy us love; that all we need is love; that of all the friends and lovers we encounter in our lives, there is one to whom no one will ever compare – who will make love something new, and, that in the end, the love we take is equal to the love we make. This month, as we celebrate that Cupid-inspired day of love, we here at Life After 50 tip our hats to the Fab Four, whose music still continues to remind us, and the generations who have followed – people of every age – of the timeless music they gave us and how much we love them…yeah, yeah, yeah!
t’s fitting that The Beatles, and their message of love, first came to the U.S. during the month in which we celebrate Valentine’s Day. Their love songs resonate with those who still hope to be needed and fed when they’re 64 (and beyond), as well as with their grandchildren who are “just 17.” While it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to decide on just which Beatles song or line most perfectly captured the gospel of love the lads preached during their brief but prolific time together, there are some that rise to the top. Here are a few that are widely considered to be at the pinnacle of their love songs.
Any Time At All
How do you truly prove love? Lennon wrote it was by being there to help one another through difficult times.
If the sun has faded away, I’ll try to make it shine; There is nothing I won’t do. When you need a shoulder to cry on, I hope it will be mine.

Things We Said Today
Does absence really make the heart grow fonder? McCartney believed that was the case and that memories of times spent together would help lovers get through long and lonely periods of separation.
Someday when I’m lonely, Wishing you weren’t so far away, Then I will remember, Things we said today.
When I’m Sixty-Four
It’s hard to imagine that McCartney wrote this song about aging when he was just 16 and then tucked it away until his father turned 64, which happened to be when The Beatles were recording “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
When I get older losing my hair, Many years from now, Will you still be sending me a valentine? Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I Fell
Haven’t we all asked ourselves the same thing Lennon asked his new love, as well as himself, when he pondered giving his heart away again after being hurt.
If I fell in love with you, Would you promise to be true, And help me understand? ‘Cause I’ve been in love before, And I found that love was more, Than just holding hands.
Here, There, and Everywhere
Crafted with an noticeable Brian Wilson inspiration, McCartney’s words are sung in a hushed tone, expressing feelings we have all had about the ones we love.
But to love her is to need her, Everywhere, knowing that love is to share, Each one believing that love never dies, Watching their eyes and hoping I’m always there.
In My Life
Originally conceived as a poem about his childhood, Lennon gave us the okay to harbor special memories while moving forward with a love like no other.
Though I know I’ll never lose affection, For people and things that went before. I know I’ll often stop and think about them. In my life, I love you more.
Something
Written by Harrison, this has become a standard in the canon of love songs and one of The Beatles’ most-covered songs, recorded and performed by artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, James Brown, Julio Iglesias and Frank Sinatra.
Something in the way she knows, And all I have to do is think of her. Something in the things she shows me; I don’t want to leave her now. You know I believe and how.
You’ll Love “Love”
If you are a fan of The Beatles’ love songs, you won’t want to miss “Love,” a theatrical production by Cirque du Soleil, which combines the music of The Beatles with an interpretive, artistic and athletic stage performance. The show plays at the Love Theater, specially built at The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas just for this show. Beyond a simple tribute to The Beatles, “Love” is a physical manifestation of their music and lyrics. Using the master tapes from Abbey Road Studios, record producer, arranger, composer, conductor, audio engineer and musician Sir George Martin, who is sometimes referred to as “The Fifth Beatle,” and his son, Giles, created the show’s three-time Grammy-winning soundtrack. These songs, so well-known and yet reinvented, are brought to exuberant life in each performance by some of the world’s most talented aerialists, acrobats and dancers. One of the pluses of most voyages to Antarctica is the inclusion of an expedition team of working polar explorers who offer on-board lecture programs. I found the team to be easily accessible and always at the ready to answer questions regarding the formation of polar glaciers or how sea life can survive in such an extreme environment. The teams also make it a point to educate guests on preserving this pristine continent from human harm.

s a travel journalist, I am constantly asked about my favorite globetrotting experiences. Frankly, the list is endless. But there is one destination that seems to raise the most eyebrows when I mention it – Antarctica.
Following World War II, there was an upsurge in scientific research on the continent, with a number of countries setting up year-round research stations. Seven countries made territorial claims and the Antarctic Treaty was negotiated in 1961.
Why? Because We Can!
As soon as I set foot aboard the ship that would take me to this land of constant winter and wonder, I began questioning other passengers on why they chose to take an eight-day cruise to the coldest, windiest and driest continent in the world – a cruel and unforgiving landscape which is 98-percent continental ice sheet and two-percent barren rock. The overwhelming answer was simple: “Because I can.” It was as good an answer as one could give, and the more I thought about it, I came to realize it was my reason, too.
While the first cruise ship exclusively designed for tourism sailed to Antarctica in the summer of 1950, the only season in which the weather makes it possible, it wasn’t until 1970, as the cruise industry began to grow, that tourism to Antarctica gained popularity. The remote destination became so popular that by 2005, 36 different vessels made it to the continent on an annual basis. For many, a voyage to Antarctica is a journey into history; for others, an unparalleled ecological and sea-life experience; but for anyone who opts to visit the bottom of the world, it is the trip of a lifetime.
The Back Story
Ushuaia – The World’s Southernmost City
It was not until the early 1800s that there was even the confirmed existence of a “southern land.” That happened when British, American, Norwegian and Russian expeditions began exploring the Antarctic Peninsula region. In 1840, it was established that Antarctica was a continent – the fifth largest in the world – and not just a group of islands. 40 LIFEAFTER50.COM February 2014
Billed as the southernmost city in the world, the ski resort town of Ushuaia sits on the bottom tip of Argentina, where a dramatic mountain landscape falls directly into the sea. Once the home of a penal colony, which is now a museum that’s well worth seeing, this is where most cruise embarkations from the Western Hemisphere begin.
“Below 40 degrees, there is no law. Below 50 degrees, there is no God.” That was the sailors’ creed about crossing the Drake Passage – a merciless 400-mile passage between the southern tip of South America and Antarctica. Named after Sir Francis Drake (who never actually passed through the route), it is considered to have some of the worst sea weather in the world.
Unimaginable Explorations
My expedition team conducted a series of excursions on Zodiac pontoon motorboats for landings on the Antarctic Peninsula and her islands. For many on the voyage, setting foot on the continent was the supreme goal. As one may imagine, the weather plays the defining factor on these cruises and flexibility is a key word on any voyage. If a certain passage is clogged by icebergs, the ship’s captain, ice master and expedition team leader will design another route. Fortunately, due to overall favorable weather conditions, we were able to make two landings, one on Paradise Harbour, considered the Riviera of Antarctica, and the other on the crescent-shaped Half Moon Island. Both locations offer stunning photo opportunities and close-up encounters with thousands of gentoo and chinstrap penguins.
The Most Beautiful Place on Earth
No words can adequately describe the experience of a visit to the bottom of the world. The best I can say is it is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. The scope and vastness of the surroundings are unimaginable. There were some days when I stood on the deck of the vessel and felt like I was on another planet. If you are thinking of making this unforgettable journey, remember the season is short and the demand is great. The following all offer Antarctic excursions in 2014, so click on www.expeditiontrips. com/Antarctica, www.expeditions.com or www.polarcruises.com to find one that fits your interests. ✦

And Finally... The Bookworm’s Best A Life After 50 book review
by Terri “The Bookworm” Schlichenmeyer
Reset: How to Beat the Job-Loss Blues and Get Ready for Your Next Act By Dwain Schenck
You haven’t had to hit the alarm for quite a few months now. You haven’t had a whole lot of reason to look presentable, either; sweats and tees are just fine. You’re not even sure your office attire fits anymore. Retired? You wish it were that simple. No, you’ve been downsized, laid off, fired, let go, and it’s starting to wear on you. But after you’ve read “Reset: How to Beat the Job-Loss Blues and Get Ready for Your Next Act” by Dwain Schenck, you might be inspired to hit the streets again. Dwain Schenck was part of an inherited staff. He’d been hired for a job he loved by a man for whom he truly enjoyed working. When that guy left, the woman who took over let Schenck interview the man who would eventually become his third boss - the guy who made Schenck uncomfortable and who ultimately let him go. At first, Schenck was filled with “fake bliss.” He was “too good for that company anyhow” and he figured it wouldn’t take him long to find a job. He had a few months’ severance, great ideas, and tons of experience. He’d be fine. But as the weeks passed, it became apparent that the search wouldn’t be easy at all. Schenck went on interviews that seemed to go well, only to end in silence. He endured “courtesy interviews” set up by former colleagues and contacts, in which it quickly became apparent that there was no job to be had. He obsessively searched online and even applied for positions for which he was extremely overqualified. The lack of job-hunting success made Schenck depressed and his family life suffered. Through this experience, Schenck learned several things, and he shares the advice he discovered: Upgrade your resume and “make sure it doesn’t read like an obituary.” Be resilient. And finally, “Don’t go it alone,” says Schenck. That’s the worst mistake you can make. At the risk of being a spoiler, I should tell you that “Reset” ends on a nice up-note… but wow, is it harrowing to get to that point. Schenck gives readers his story, warts and all. We’re privy to the embarrassments, the aggravations, the outrageousness, the highs, and the bottom-of-the-barrel moments including envy and consuming bitterness. The ferocity of the latter is quite disquieting, but not without reason; Schenck’s experiences as a job-hunter were often soul-crushing and, sadly, common – and on that note alone, his book offers lessons and tips all around. This is definitely a book for job-seekers, but there’s plenty here for upper management, CEOs, and anyone along the job spectrum who knows that, well, you never know. If that’s you, then “Reset” is a book to hit. “Reset: How to Beat the Job-Loss Blues and Get Ready for Your Next Act” by Dwain Schenck, 2014, Da Capo Lifelong, $16.99, 242 pages The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer who lives on a hill with two dogs and more than 12,000 books. You can read all of Terri’s book reviews, updated weekly, at www.lifeafter50.com. Just click on “Entertainment” and then “Book Reviews.”
A Look Back Just like Schwab’s Pharmacy, Chasen’s, and a professional football team, this month will see “The Tonight Show” join the list of things that no longer exist in Los Angeles. “The Tonight Show,” under the tutelage of Steve Allen, Jack Paar and Johnny Carson, originated out of New York from its first broadcast in 1954 until 1972, when Carson moved the show to the NBC Studios in Burbank. In the wake of Carson’s 1992 retirement, Jay Leno held the reins of the venerable late night chat fest until 2009 when he was replaced by Conan O’Brien, who moved the show to Universal Studios. Never catching on with viewers, O’Brien was booted from behind the desk after just a few months and, in one of the strangest twists in television history, was replaced by the very man he replaced. With Leno back, the show returned to Burbank, but in a different studio on the NBC lot. During the four decades that “The Tonight Show” called Southern California home, it became one the most significant tourist draws in the state. That will end on February 17 as Jimmy Fallon becomes the sixth man to serve as the permanent host of the show, which will return to its roots at the NBC Studios in New York.

PMF Investment Notes have been paying investors for over 20 years without ever losing a penny for our note holders. Best of all, the interest is paid monthly. To learn more about this secure investment that pays 7.4%, please visit www.PMFbancorp.com/PMFnotes. By: Stephen Perl, MS, MBA and President of PMF Investment Corp.
