hen it comes to icons of our youth, the thought of musicians David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash performing at Woodstock, humorist and actor Orson Bean spewing witticisms on the panel of “To Tell the Truth” and Super Bowlwinning quarterback Joe Namath running off the field of the Orange Bowl signaling that the New York Jets were the number one team in football are all indelibly etched into the mind of every baby boomer.

Who of us – who bore witness to those times – would have ever thought that well over 40 years on, Crosby, Stills and Nash would still be recording and touring, Bean would still be appearing in television and stage productions and Namath would still be involved with numerous successful business ventures including a youth football camp he began when he was just 28?

In this month’s issue, we catch up with these icons of the 1960s and ‘70s – Crosby and Bean via sit-down interviews and Namath by way of a beautiful Father’s Day tribute written by his oldest daughter, Jessica, who is a talented writer and photographer.

For those of us who grew up in the era which saw that trio burst into the nation’s consciousness, we have lived through the accidents, assassinations and addictions that robbed us – far too early – of many of the brightest, most talented and creative people to have ever walked this planet. And yet, as we ourselves settle into the late third and fourth quarters of life, it is also rather amazing and inspiring how many of the “greats” of our youth are still doing what they did a half century ago.

Just think of the list of those who entertained us as kids who are still out there doing what they do: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Betty White, Don Rickles, Robert Wagner, Elton John, Mel Brooks, Pat Boone, Roger Daltrey, Paul Simon, Brian Wilson. Smokey Robinson, Clint Eastwood, Joan Rivers. Bill Cosby, Cher, Johnny Mathis, Frankie Valli, Joan Baez, Helen Reddy, Woody Allen, Barbra Streisand – and that’s just off the top of my head.

All of those folks, with the exception of Elton and Cher (who still have a few years to go in their 60s), are in their 70s and 80s. To put that into a bit of perspective (again with the exception of Elton and Cher), every one of them is old enough to be the parent, and in some cases the grandparent, of the current president of the United States.

For us boomers, who once thought it would all be over by the time we were 30, that group, along with Crosby, Bean and Namath, and so many others, both those in the public eye and folks we know personally, serve as an inspiration to us; giving us hope that once we hit 50, there is still a heck of a lot of life to live!

Trying to slim down? If so, red may become your new favorite color. According to a recent study published in the journal “Appetite,” the use of red dishes may help you eat less.

Researchers gave 240 participants snacks of popcorn and chocolate chips served on either red, white, or blue plates. Those who munched from the red plates ate less overall than those who ate the snacks from the white or blue plates. Researchers suggest that the color red may register in our brains as an unconscious “stop sign” that could slow down the amount we eat.

Notable personalities born in June 1964 who are celebrating their 50th birthday this month include actresses Courtney Cox and Judie Aronson, actor Doug Savant, novelist Dan Brown, singer and dancer Stedman Pearson and screenwriter and director Joss Whedon who created the WB Network series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

Kids Are For Kids Men who become fathers at an older age may be more likely to have a child with autism and the risk grows steadily as men age, according to findings published in the “International Journal of Epidemiology.” In a recent study, Professor Brian Lee and his colleagues at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden analyzed the records of 417,000 children born between 1984 and 2003. The research supports another recent study which found the children of older fathers are more likely to develop autism and psychiatric disorders. The study, published in the “JAMA Psychiatry” journal, revealed children born to fathers over the age of 45 are three-and-a-half times more likely to develop autism than those born to men in their early 20s. It also revealed that there was a 24-fold increased risk of bipolar disorder and a 13-fold high risk of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children born to older fathers.

This year, the Pageant of the Masters, Laguna Beach’s world-famous celebration of art in “living pictures” – tableaux vivants – enters its ninth decade. Arguably one of the most unusual productions in the entire world, the pageant showcases real people magically transformed into life-sized recreations of famous works of arts.

A live narrator guides the audience through the story of each living picture accompanied by the music of a live orchestra. With an expert staff and hundreds of dedicated volunteers, the Pageant

of the Masters has won recognition as the best presentation of its kind.

Using a gallery of the world’s great masterpieces for clues, this year’s theme, “The Art Detective,” reveals how lost treasures were discovered, where crimes of passion were uncovered (or covered up) and how creative riddles were unraveled. The performance revisits the world’s most costly, and, as yet unsolved, art heist. In 1990, thieves stole a Vermeer painting and several other priceless works from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. It’s a case that, after all these years, now seems on the verge of a breakthrough.

According to the pageant’s director, Diane Challis Davy, the original inspiration for the theme came from television shows such as “The History Detectives” as well as a love of Sherlock Holmes mysteries. This season features Manet’s “Olympia,” Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch,” Botticelli’s “Primavera” and “Madame X” by John Singer Sargent.”

The Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters takes place at the Irvine Bowl which is located at 650 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach. The event runs from July 9 through August 30. Providing Protection From A Not-So-Neighborly Neighbor

My 88-year-old dad was living independently and I live in another part of the state, so when he didn’t answer one of my recent regular check-in calls, I phoned his neighbor to check on him. She found him needing help, called the ambulance and I was on the first plane to be with him. When he returned home, it was clear he was going to need help. I was going to hire a live-in housekeeper, but one of his neighbors offered to help. My dad was receptive to the offer, as was I. We agreed on a weekly live-in rate for five days a week and my dad’s long-time housekeeper agreed to work the weekend. Everything seemed to be working out, but then my dad began growing irritable with me during my calls and told me I didn’t need to be “spying” on him.

I called the neighbor to see what was up and she was also short with me. Then my dad’s regular housekeeper called to tell me she had been fired. I immediately called my dad to find out what was going on. He told me I’m a bad daughter and I wasn’t welcome anymore. I called the neighbor and she hung up on me. Smelling a rat, I went online to check his trust bank account that I help him manage and was denied access. I called the bank manager who advised me he could not discuss the account because there are new trust documents. I called the police to do a welfare check.

They reported back that my dad was fine, didn’t want to see me, and told them I had been taking money from him, but wouldn’t press charges if I stayed away. I’m worried sick about what might happen to him, not to mention distraught over the thought of being arrested if I try to see him again. I also don’t want to do anything that will humiliate him. What are my options?

You need to protect your dad and yourself from this rat of a neighbor. If she has been this bold in such a short period of time, she will go on to clean him out of house and home. If she gets away with it, I assure you, THAT will be more humiliating for him than any steps you take to protect him.

At a minimum, you need to freeze his assets through civil court proceedings to prevent the neighbor from taking his accounts and even transferring his house. In your dad’s case, your best route would be to initiate a conservatorship and trust action to temporarily prevent any new power of attorney or trust documents being used on his behalf. Although, in many cases, these actions are filed when someone is taking advantage of an individual experiencing cognitive defectives from dementia, they can also be used to protect people who are susceptible to undue influence.

In addition to taking necessary steps to protect your father and his assets temporarily, you are taking steps to have a more long-lasting appointment of someone to be in charge and accountable for the management of his finances. Normally, you would be asking the court to appoint you to do this, however, now that your credibility has been questioned, you might have to consider asking for the temporary appointment of a professional fiduciary until your name is cleared. As such, you should also be prepared to present any financial documentation proving that you properly managed your dad’s finances.

Once someone is appointed, it might be necessary to file a proceeding to recover any monies or other property improperly taken by the neighbor. This might be an action against her as the fiduciary under the power of attorney and trust or a civil elder abuse action.

Your first step would be to identify and retain an elder law attorney with significant experience in the probate court system in your father’s county of residency. The attorney will need copies of all your dad’s estate planning documents and any other appropriate financial and medical documentation. Also, these cases are fact driven, so the more information you can give the attorney, the better. Lastly, many families don’t pursue court action because, like you, they are embarrassed for their parent or even themselves.

Please understand that is what the wrongdoers are hoping for and counting on. ª

Is Your Financial Advisor Right For You?

ecently, a new client sat in my office, thinking of moving their account to our firm. At one point in the discussion, this individual asked: “Should I leave my current advisor when he’s making me money?”

That raises an outstanding question: When, and for what reasons, should you replace your current financial advisor?

When And Why Should You Make A Change?

Deciding to replace a financial advisor is always a difficult decision. I often see folks replace someone they should have kept or keep a relationship going they should have terminated long ago. The question investors should ask themselves from time to time is: Is there any reason I should replace my financial advisor? The answer to that question is relatively easy and comes down to three considerations: performance, philosophy and personality. Do you fire your advisor for bad performance (or not enough good performance)? The answer can be both yes and no. You have to look deeper. You have to ask the question: Why did my account perform poorly or fail to meet my expectations?

If the account is invested correctly and you simply experienced a poor performance based on your allocation (think of 2008), then you shouldn’t just pull the plug on your advisor. However, if a year like 2008 revealed a level of risk you didn’t want and weren’t aware you were taking, then the poor performance is a perfect reason to leave.

This raises the question my new client asked: “My accounts are making money so why should I make a change?”

If this is your circumstance, don’t look at current returns, but rather at the worstcase scenario based on your current advisor’s approach. Using that information, determine if it all fits in with what you are willing to live with. Perhaps your advisor is taking too much risk for your goals and personality. In that case, your returns may currently be excellent, but the potential losses when the market does turn down could be unacceptably high. This leads us to look at an advisor’s philosophy and personality.

When my client asked how to leave an advisor who was performing well, my answer was: “Philosophy and personality.” When you are working with a financial advisor or wealth manager, their philosophy and personality must fit yours. My client had a very low risk tolerance and was unwilling to see even two quarters in a row of principal losses. Yet, while their accounts were doing well, it was inevitable the client will experience those types of losses; it is just a matter of time.

It is often said a leopard can’t change its spots and the same is usually true with people’s philosophic make up. If you are very conservative and need that approach with your assets, you need to determine if your advisor shares your opinion. When you call and say: “I’m losing too much, get me out of the stock market,” does your advisor share your philosophy or do they try to talk you out of it?

Staying with an advisor or manager who tries to force you to stay the course when you can’t afford to (financially or mentally) is a mistake. So make sure your advisor has the same beliefs and thought processes you do. If you are confident that they do, then rely on their expertise to implement a plan that is right for you.

Make Sure You Have the Right Advisor With the stock market near historic highs, now is the time to make sure you are working with someone whose performance, philosophy and personality are the right fit for you. All the designations, degrees or success stories don’t mean a hill of beans if the advisor’s philosophy and personality don’t fit with yours. It really does go beyond performance to the how and why of that performance.

D

avid Crosby was only 23 when he and The Byrds pioneered the musical genre of folk rock and just 28 as he took to the stage at Woodstock for a 16-song set with Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young.

Always opinionated, he has been an outspoken voice for social change who has loudly and passionately railed against the injustices foisted upon our country by those who embrace war, espouse greed, defile the environment, are unwilling to accept that all men are created equal, and believe the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are reserved for the privileged.

Having left an indelible mark on music and social activism, Crosby has also weathered a barrage of personal demons, addictions, arrests, incarceration, financial problems, feuds with band mates and health issues including diabetes, heart problems, hepatitis C, liver failure and injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

He is a survivor of the rock ‘n’ roll world that has claimed far too many young and talented lives, and, just weeks shy of his 73rd birthday, continues to write, record and use his resonant voice to both entertain and deliver the message of social conscientiousness he has faithfully preached for six decades.

Having just recently released “Croz” (Blue Castle Records, 2014), his first solo album in 20 years, it is evident, in his song “Dangerous Night,” that he is still railing against the system: 14 LIFEAFTER50.COM June 2014

Born in Los Angeles in 1941, Crosby was the son of an Academy Awardwinning cinematographer. Enamored of the film industry through his father’s work, Crosby decided to also pursue a career in entertainment.

Intending to become an actor, he attended Santa Barbara City College as a drama student, but dropped out to pursue a career in music.

Performing as a member of Les Baxter’s Balladeers, Crosby began his musical career as a folk singer, playing clubs and coffee houses from New York’s Greenwich Village to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district in the early 1960s. Soon after, he joined up with Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke to form The Byrds. At the forefront of the electric folk rock era, they hit the charts with songs that would go on to become classics such as “Eight Miles High,” “Turn! Turn! Turn!” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Leaving The Byrds in 1967, Crosby embarked on a lifelong collaboration with Graham Nash and Stephen Stills, who, together, became renowned for their vocal harmonies and stellar musicianship with timeless songs including “Marrakesh Express,” “Guinnevere,” “Long Time Gone,” “Just a Song Before I Go,” “Teach Your Children,” “Woodstock,” “Our House,” “Ohio,” and “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.”

While Crosby has always had demons to contend with, in 1967 he found solace on a 74-foot, John Alden-designed schooner named Mayan that he sailed thousands of miles in the Pacific and Caribbean Oceans. He has said that the Mayan served as a muse for his songwriting and he wrote several songs while aboard her, including “Wooden Ships,” “The Lee Shore,” “Page 43,” and “Carry Me.” Having been involved in a number of relationships over the years with Christine Hinton, who was killed in a head-on collision in 1969, Joni Mitchell, Debbie Donovan and Jackie Guthrie, Crosby had a biological son, James Raymond, who was put up for adoption after his birth in 1962. Reunited with Crosby as an adult in the late 1990s, James now works with his father in the recording studio and onstage.

In addition to James, Crosby has three other children: a daughter, Erika, with Guthrie, a Photo by Eleanor Stills daughter, Donovan, with Donovan and a son, Django, who was conceived with his current wife, Jan Dance, after extensive fertility treatments while Crosby’s liver was failing. In 2000, it was also revealed

by Melissa Etheridge and her then-partner, Julie Cypher, that Crosby was the biological father of their two children, who were conceived by artificial insemination. Crosby’s only sibling, Ethan, who taught him to play guitar, committed suicide in late 1997 or early 1998. The date is unknown because a lengthy period of time elapsed between the time he took his life and when his body was found.

Today, Crosby lives in Santa Ynez, California with Jan and Django, who turned 18 this year. Currently on tour with Stills and Nash, which will include Southern California performances in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and San Diego in late September and early October, “Croz” – as his friends call him – recently spent some time with Life After 50. Thinner and healthier than he has been in years, a wide smile broke out from under his legendary walrus mustache as he was queried on how he is feeling David Crosby (DC): I feel great. I’ve been going through a lot of meds that can be hard on you. I’m on some antivirals for my hepatitis C. But the heart thing hasn’t been a problem at all. It’s amazing what they can do – like science fiction. When they discovered I had a 90-percent blockage, they just went into the femoral artery, sneak a little tube up there and say, “Okay, that’s not right. We need to open that up.” Then the balloon opens, they slip the little tube back down and kick you out of the office.

Life After 50 (LA50): You had the cardiac catheterization to fix the blocked coronary artery in February, so it’s been over three months now. Have you felt better since having the procedure done?

DC: I felt better almost right away because of the better blood flow to my heart. It’s all so amazing what they can do – my liver transplant, clearing out my artery. Someday they’ll figure out how to keep us alive till we’re 200.

LA50: How would you feel about that?

DC: I would take it, man! I wrote a song once that said: “Time is the final currency, not money, not power. The time will come when you’ll give anything for one more hour.” The truth is that is really right. None of us really has enough time. I could use another 100 years just studying and learning all the stuff I didn’t learn in this lifetime. I would love to learn about at least three disciplines of science and would love to learn at least five languages. I also have dozens of places I want to go and dozens of people I would love to sit down and talk with.

LA50: Who are the people on the top of that list?

DC: My first choice would be Albert Einstein, but his time has run out, so I’m too late for that. There are so many interesting people but the name that leaps to mind first is Neil deGrasse Tyson, the astrophysicist who does “Cosmos.” I think he is a superbly bright guy I would love to talk to.

LA50: We have had the privilege of talking to and featuring some fascinating people in Life After 50 over the years, including some who joined you in performing at Woodstock – Melanie and Grace Slick. As the years go by, what thoughts or memories come to you first when you think back on that time?

DC: I have no thoughts or memories about it, because I don’t think about the past at all.

I think about what I have to do today – what I could do and should do and need to do this week and this month and what I hope to be able to do this year. I haven’t given Woodstock any thought in so many years that I can’t even remember much about it and can’t give you one memory about it. We were just a baby band back then. I do remember that. We had just started playing together. So all I can say about Woodstock is that I know we had a really good time, because everyone who does remember it tells me that we did [laughs].

LA50: Back in those days, you felt our country was on the wrong track and were very vocal about that. How do you think we are doing, all these years later?

DC: I do not think we are doing well at all, and for some basic and old and sad reasons – greed, stupidity, shortsightedness and, again, I’ll say greed, because that, above all things, is destroying this country and this world. It is now possible for corporations and the super wealthy to buy congressmen and senators easily and legally and, for them, cheaply. And so why is the country going to hell? Because these big money corporations and people who care about nothing but themselves are the ones who are really running the country. The president is just a hood ornament and the congress – the ones who are supposed to be really running the country, because they are the ones with the purse strings – are all bought and paid for. The big corporations and oil companies tell them to jump and they ask, “How high?” The proof of that is in the pudding every day when we see the big money people get their way and get away with anything. They are the ones with the power, not the politicians. The president and the congress are just paid for pawns.

LA50: You emphasize that you believe our biggest problems are being caused by greed. How does greediness translate into being such a problem?

DC: How many hours or days do you have for me to answer? Let’s start with the climate deniers – those who are either paid to ignore science and be in denial or are willing to believe what those who are paid to be in denial want them to believe. What really baffles me is that the guys who run the big oil companies, who are adamantly denying climate change and June 2014 LIFEAFTER50.COM 15

putting out billions of dollars to buy the politicians to carry that message of denial, are ruining the planet their kids and grandkids are going to inherit. That is how blindly greedy the heads of the country’s corporations are. It is more important that they get another Gulfstream jet than it is for their own kids to have a future. It is so discouraging to see how a really great idea – democracy – an elected government – is being destroyed by big money and big business. Our founding fathers never foresaw the mass media of today, where the guys who could afford to buy the most TV time to get their message out would get the keys to the kingdom. That never occurred to the people who wrote the Constitution, who only knew mass media as movable type and a printing press. I’m also extremely discouraged with our obsession with war. We are not fighting wars to get territory or anything at all out of it. We are just making huge profits for the corporations that own congress and the country. Our wars are now corporate wars to line the pockets of the companies who clothe and feed and arm our armed forces. Billions of dollars are to be made by war, so they just call up and order a war from the congressmen they own and you wind up with the John McCains of the world always out there calling for us to attack somebody – anybody. Look at the lives who have been ruined because of this. And it’s not just the people coming home with their arms and legs blown off. I just talked to a veteran who took some fire and returned it and then went over to see who he killed. He rolled the body over and saw it was a 12-year-old kid.

You don’t get over something like that. He will never be the same. The only thing we have gotten out of being a warring country is the undying hatred of the world. Obama should have gotten us out of Afghanistan a long time ago.

I’m so disappointed in Obama. History has shown no one from Alexander the Great on has ever won in Afghanistan. The Russians, when they ruled from Germany to the Pacific and up to the North Pole went into Afghanistan and got their asses kicked. There’s no winning there. This is a country that, if no one invades them, they will fight one another just for fun. I am proud that Obama is the president. I think he is a very bright man and I like him personally. I’ve met him twice and truly like him, but he is still a politician 16 LIFEAFTER50.COM June 2014

and, man, politicians are pond scum.

LA50: Do you have any thoughts on the possibility of our next president being a woman?

DC: If you’re talking about who I think you’re talking about – she’s a politician and so she’s pond scum. She’s certainly better than anyone from the Republican Party, but I’m disappointed in every politician in office today. In my book, even the best of them are lower than squid shit.

LA50: Is there any good news to be found in where we are or where we are going as a country?

DC: I know to say this carries the fright of sounding stupid and silly, but I think the flow of information to a society is of paramount importance and that may be our saving grace. Kids today get more information by the time they are 14 than people of my generation got in a lifetime. I think that can’t help but to affect the development of their minds and their abilities. Our kids have never known a world where they could not find out about something – anything – immediately. I have found that young people today do have an astounding retention rate. I think there is a generation coming along who may use the information they have available to them to make positive changes. So I think there is some good news, but, man, there’s so much more bad news.

LA50: So let’s go on to more pleasant subjects, like the good news that you are still making music and sound as great as ever.

DC: I don’t understand how my voice has held up so well over the years, but I am very grateful for it. I did everything wrong you could possibly do to care for your voice. I shouldn’t even have a whisper left. So I’m very thankful.

LA50: Do you still enjoy performing?

DC: I keep up a pretty busy schedule. I love the singing part of work – those hours onstage. Everything else about being on the road is very hard –

– the bad food, the loneliness – that is all no good.

LA50: Could you and Graham and Stephen have ever imagined – in the ‘60s – that you would still be out there doing it in 2014?

DC: They are both so great and delivering as amazing as ever. We’ve been through so much together, we can’t even remember it all, but I am very happy to still be working with them and getting it right and standing onstage giving each other that wink that says we know we’re still doing it right and are so happy to still be doing it.

LA50: David, so many people seem to lose interest in current music once they get into their late 20s or early 30s. Why do you think that is?

DC: A lot of people do freeze at a certain age when it comes to music. I think they just get to a place where they are comfortable in what they listen to and to who they listen to and the last thing they need in their lives is more change. The other part of that equation is that most – not all – but most of what is being churned out today is junk. It’s highly polished creations of music that is being performed by pop tarts – cute kids who can wiggle their asses but can’t sing or play with any musicianship. To me, that is not deep, it’s not attractive, and it’s not going to pull me or others of my generation away from The Beatles or Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell or James Taylor.

LA50: You emphasize that not all of today’s music is junk. Who do you like of the current crop of music makers?

DC: There are those out there today who are completely amazing to me. I sat in a room, 50 feet away from Lady Gaga. I watched her take her place at the piano and only knew of her from all of the theatricality– nothing of her music. Then she began to sing and play and I was blown away. This woman can really write and play and sing. I love her because she is the opposite of today’s pop tarts. She’s the real thing. I think Bonnie Raitt and Shawn Colvin are the greatest singers of today and I put Lady Gaga up there with them. I think Bonnie is the best female singer in the world, and I think Shawn Colvin is an absolute stunner. I don’t know anyone in music today who writes better than she does. She’s up there with Marc Cohn. His last record, “Join the Parade,” with the song “Listening for Levon” – that to me is great songwriting.

LA50: When you aren’t working, what is your life like today?

DC: Jan and I do small ordinary things. We grow tomatoes in our garden and we go to the store. We get our car fixed and go out for dinner with friends. We have two yellow labs – Lucky and Bode – and a border collie and collie mix – Rubin – who is beautiful. We take them to the beach, which is heaven for them. My son Django still lives at home and we all

love goofing off in our swimming pool – just hanging around in the sun and falling into the water, hanging around in the sun and falling into the water.

That is heaven for us.

LA50: Are you still sailing?

DC: No. I wish I was. After 45 years of loving and living on my boat and sailing her around the world, I got her into perfect shape. It was magnificent. The only problem was, I knew I could not afford to keep her in that kind of shape and I just couldn’t bear the thought of watching her go downhill in my hands. So I did what was right by the boat instead of what was right by me. I would have loved to have kept it, but I had a buyer who was a lifelong wooden schooner sailor. He knew exactly what she was and how to take care of her and enjoy her and sail her and he had the money to keep her perfect. That boat gave me so much pleasure for so long, I really wanted to do right by her. Keeping a boat like that in great condition takes a tremendous amount of money – a lot more than I have.

LA50: This month, as we celebrate Father’s Day, can you tell us what you think of today when you sing the line “Teach your children well”?

DC: Well, I’m certainly not the wise and all-knowing person to ask about parenting, but I do think, as the years have gone by, I have figured some things out – the obvious things. Children live on love, just like flowers live on water. Giving your kids all the love you have to give is the first thing you have to do. The second thing is to make information available to them. If you know you are loved and have information available to you, you have the world open to you. I’m so happy with where all my kids are in their lives.

James is spectacular. I love playing with him. And Django is very talented.

He shot the photo we used as the cover of my latest album. I’m impressed with a lot of the young kids I meet today through them. I think we have some pretty spectacular kids coming along.

LA50: You will turn 73 in August. As the years have gone by, have you adopted any philosophy on getting older?

DC: I have no philosophy on getting older, but I do have great respect for the Buddhists of Tibet who aren’t afraid to die and don’t care about having stuff. I know a few monks and I admire them. I would like to aspire to be like them, but I will admit, I’m afraid of dying. I don’t spend any time worrying about it, because I’m too busy doing what I do in the here and now. But I have come to feel that this life just doesn’t give us enough time. For me, I was only just beginning to figure out who I was when I was already middleaged. None of us get enough time, so all I can say is don’t waste a single minute of it.ª

Men’s Health

Managing health is the most important thing an aging man can do – for himself, and for those who love him Compiled by Maxine Andrews with information provided

his month, as we honor our fathers, it is the perfect time to remind the men in our lives that making a commitment to manage their health is one of the most important things they can do – for themselves and their family. This means adopting good lifestyle choices and scheduling regular medical examinations and health screenings.

Doing these things will not only help safeguard a man’s present health, but will also help to improve the quality of life in the years to come. The following are common health issues and screening recommendations that men should discuss with their physician so that they can partner together to develop a personalized preventive plan for health and wellness.

Heart Health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other leading organizations list heart disease as the leading men’s health threat. However, many of the elements that can contribute to heart disease are within our control – simply by making good lifestyle and nutrition decisions.

“You can help decrease your chances of a heart attack by avoiding unhealthy foods, pursuing daily physical activity, working with your doctor on any needed medications and watching for possible warning signs,” said Dr. Lee Carter, Medical Director, Non Invasive Imaging and Cardiac Rehabilitation, Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute at Hoag Memorial Hospital.

Awareness and lifestyle modifications are key in helping to improve and sustain heart health. Therefore, it’s essential for men (and women) to understand that there are many positive actions they can take to ensure a healthy heart. It’s important to: • Know Your Numbers – As cholesterol in the blood increases, so does the risk for coronary heart disease. Therefore, the first step in preventing heart attack is to understand your cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride levels.

• Manage Chronic Conditions – If you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure, be sure to follow your doctor’s treatment recommendations. If you have diabetes, keep your blood sugar under control.

• Take Charge of Your Diet – Healthy eating habits can help you reduce three of the major risk factors for heart disease – abnormal lipid profile (e.g., high cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, low HDL), high blood pressure and excess body weight. Following a heart-healthy eating plan will help you achieve and maintain a healthy eating pattern. For more about heart-healthy dietary guidelines, visit the American Heart Association website.

• Exercise – Just as important to your heart as eating a healthy diet is using up more calories (energy) than you consume each day. The American Heart 18 LIFEAFTER50.COM June 2014

Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, which translates to 30 to 45 minutes each day for five days. This is important because regular physical activity helps lower the risk of heart disease.

• Stop Smoking – If you smoke, quit! Smoking has been proven to contribute to atherosclerosis (buildup of fatty substances in the arteries). In fact, many studies have shown evidence that cigarette smoking is a major cause of coronary heart disease, which leads to heart attack.

• Maintain a Healthy Weight – Find out what your ideal weight is based on your height and body structure, and make a commitment to achieving and maintaining that weight. Eating a heart-healthy diet and exercising regularly are key factors in maintaining a healthy weight, all of which will translate to a healthier heart.

• Limit Alcohol – If you choose to drink alcohol, do so only in moderation. Too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure.

Prostate Health

As one of the most prevalent cancers in the United States, affecting one in six men, prostate cancer is an important issue that needs to be addressed. Early detection of prostate cancer can save lives, and the earlier it is detected, the easier it is to treat.

“Hoag Cancer Institute recommends that men who are at increased risk for developing prostate cancer begin screening at the age of 40, such as men of African-American descent, or those who have a family history of prostate cancer,” states Jeffrey Yoshida, M.D., Program Director of Hoag Urologic Oncology. “For individuals who do not meet the high-risk criteria, screening would commence at age 45.”

A complete prostate cancer screening includes both a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, which is performed with a basic blood draw, and a digital rectal exam (DRE). An abnormal PSA level or significant rise in PSA over time would necessitate further testing, which could include a prostate biopsy. There are

numerous factors that can influence a PSA level, such as BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), urinary tract infections and prostatitis, and thus only 25 percent of prostate biopsies will reveal cancer. If the DRE test is abnormal, your physician may request a biopsy, or have you return months later for further testing to monitor if any changes have occurred.

If diagnosed with prostate cancer, some men are eligible to participate in active surveillance, also known as “watchful waiting.” Active surveillance is a way of monitoring indolent or slow-growing prostate cancers. This approach relies on quarterly PSA testing and an annual biopsy to identify if there is cancer progression.

It is important to understand that not all cancers are created equal.

Some are aggressive, while others are slow-growing. Yet, depending on the individual’s ethnicity, family history, age and exposure to potential risks, screening and intervention may be necessary.

It is recommended that you discuss this topic with your primary care physician or urologist to see when testing is most appropriate for you.

Lung Health

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death for both men and women, with approximately 160,000 individuals a year dying from this disease. In fact, lung cancer takes the lives of more people than cancers of the breast, prostate and colon combined.

One of the best ways to protect your lung health is to refrain from smoking, and if you currently smoke, to stop. However, for individuals who have smoked for part of or the majority of their lives, lung cancer screening is highly recommended to detect any abnormality that may be cancerous as early as possible. A recent study has shown now that lung screening is truly a life-saving step.

In October 2010, the National Cancer Institute released preliminary results of its National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), which showed that low-dose CT scans reduced mortality from lung cancer by 20 percent in patients between the ages of 55 to 74, with greater than a 30 pack-year* smoking history. The study, which was conducted between 2002 and 2009, randomized 53,456 smokers or former smokers to screening by either a traditional chest X-ray or a lowradiation dose spiral CT scan, once a year for three consecutive years. The results demonstrated that the CT scanning technology found cancer more often than traditional a chest X-ray, saving the lives of many individuals.

“This study is a major step forward in the fight against lung cancer, and further validates the importance of early detection,” states Winston Whitney, M.D., Hoag Radiologist and Program Director for Hoag’s Lung Cancer Early Detection Program. “At Hoag, we are committed to early detection, and will continue using evidence-based practices to improve the lives of the individuals we treat.”

Low-dose CT screening is highly recommended for anyone aged 55 to 74 with at least a 30 pack-year* smoking history. Individuals over the age of 50 with at least a 10 pack-year smoking history should also strongly consider low-dose CT screening. *Pack-years refer to the number of years an individual smoked, multiplied by the number of packs smoked per day.

Colorectal Health

Colorectal cancer is highly preventable with proper screening the gold standard of which is colonoscopy. This is because colonoscopy not only provides the most comprehensive method for detecting cancer early when treatment is most successful, but also because it helps to prevent the onset of cancer by enabling physicians to remove polyps that could be found during the procedure.

Although most polyps are benign, some can become cancerous over time. And because colorectal cancer symptoms often do not appear until the cancer is in advanced stages, regular screening is critical.

“Hoag Cancer Institute recommends routine colonoscopies beginning at age 50 for both men and women, with subsequent intervals for retesting as determined by a physician,” shares Donald Abrahm, Hoag-affiliated gastroenterologist.

“The importance of colonoscopies cannot be overemphasized. Finding and removing potentially cancerous polyps may prevent colorectal cancer, and furthermore, lead to earlier, more successful treatment.”

Research has shown the following risk factors contribute to colorectal cancer: • Age – More than 90 percent of people with this disease are diagnosed after age 50. The average age for diagnosis is the mid 60s.

• Colorectal polyps – Most polyps are benign, but some can be cancerous.

Consistently finding and removing polyps can reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Oftentimes, polyps will develop into cancer.

• Family history – Individuals who have close relatives with a history of colorectal cancer are more likely to develop the disease themselves, and should speak with their physician about whether to begin colorectal cancer screening earlier.

• Behavioral risk factors – These include tobacco and alcohol, physical inactivity and obesity.

Fakers In The Food Aisle

I

s all that health food you’re eating making you fit – or fat? Take a peek at the ingredient list and the nutritional-facts label on any package of “healthy foods” in your fridge or pantry. With a little looking (for which you will not only need your reading glasses but also a good strong magnifying glass), you just might find the answer.

First, Check To See: Are the total fat grams, multiplied by nine calorie grams, more than 30 percent of the total calories? If so, you have a “fatty” product. Remember, even healthy fat makes you fat.

Are the saturated-fat grams more than 10 percent of the total fat grams? If so, you have a product that has too much unhealthy fat, which not only affects the waistline, but can ruin your health.

Is there a significant amount of “unaccounted for” fat (total fat grams listed, minus the amounts listed for specific types of fat)? If so, you have a product that has too much trans-fat, which is the unhealthy byproduct of hydrogenation and is extremely bad for you in any significant quantity.

Is it a carbohydrate-rich food that contains highly processed, refined ingredients and few, if any, grams of fiber? If so, you are in the health-free zone! Choose fiber rich, whole-grain-based breads, cereals and crackers, and your body will process your intake efficiently, without causing a spike in blood sugar or converting the excess to body fat.

Here’s How To Interpret What Your Reading: Health claims describe the relationship between a food, food component and/or dietary supplement, and reducing the risk of a disease or health-related condition.

An example to look for might be, “Soluble fiber from oatmeal may reduce the risk of heart disease, as part of a low-saturated fat, low-cholesterol diet.”

Watch out for the disclaimer that accompanies preliminary health claims. These are made on incomplete, shaky evidence. If you find a disclaimer that says something like, “The FDA has determined that there is little scientific evidence and is not conclusive” – put the product down. The responsibility for ensuring the validity of these claims rests with the manufacturer, FDA, or, in the case of advertising, the Federal Trade Commission.

you to better understand how men can make the second half of their lives the best years of their lives. Of all the issues I deal with in my book, the one that most aging men need help with is battling that dreaded belly fat.

The one area of the body that disappoints most men, especially as they get older, is their stomach. Abdominal or visceral obesity – what we often refer to as the potbelly or beer gut – is such a common occurrence that most men think of their expanding waistline as a rite of passage or a normal part of aging that can’t be changed. This is, in fact, partially true: As men get older, they are at much greater risk for developing belly fat. But let me tell you, adjusting your belt a notch every few years is not “normal,” and it’s the one part of your body that can eventually do you more harm than good.

Belly fat results from an excess production of body fat that is deposited inside the abdominal cavity, packed between and around your internal organs. The male belly evolved to be the great repository for stored fat, which was burned as needed in order to keep our cavemen ancestors alive through periods of famine. Fortunately for most of us, famine is no longer an issue, yet our bodies are still programmed to desperately hold on to excess fat stores at the waist for a future need that almost never arises.

There are many factors that may cause an increase in the production of belly fat, which range from what some would consider the most obvious to what others find highly speculative. We do know that when a person takes

in more calories from food than his or her body can expend, the excess is converted into body fat and stored for later use. When we continue this cycle on a daily basis, the stored fat is never required and therefore accumulates all over the body: in the arms, legs, and most noticeably, the belly. Yet we don’t know exactly why some men store more excess weight than others. The widespread misperception is that it is simply the result of eating too much or exercising too little. While maintaining a proper diet and exercising regularly do matter, these environmental influences alone cannot always determine an individual’s waistline.

For example, many men who are overly fat eat a relatively good diet, exercise daily, and still have trouble losing weight.

The Fleeting Fads

Some studies will point out that body fat may be related to the excessive consumption of one nutrient group over another, relating weight gain to eating too much fat or carbohydrates or foods with gluten. This is why fad diets exist. Those are the ones that are based on a study or two that suggest you forgo one particular food group in order to lose weight. Yet the next year, another study shows something entirely different. These fad diets are often hard to maintain because the results are often only temporary: When you entirely forgo a particular nutrient group, you may achieve real weight loss, but then other physical or emotional stresses can arise that the body has to respond to, and instead of focusing on burning body fat, your body simply gets used to your new way of eating. More often than not, after the end of a couple of weeks, you’re back to where you started in terms of your weight. Or worse, the body has overcompensated, leading to more cravings and weight gain. And all along the way, you’ve lost the positive aspects those nutrients hold that the rest of your body needs to function optimally.

You Really Are What You Eat

There has been real scientific evidence that the foods we eat can affect how we look and feel. Science is pretty much in agreement that highly processed foods are one of the major culprits of the obesity epidemic here in the United States. Americans have a real dependence on readily available, highly processed food that our bodies rapidly assimilate into sugar and then mainline right into our bloodstreams, leading to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

However, there are also foods that can make a real and positive impact on our health and our waistline. For example, we now know that the quality of protein one eats is inversely related to one’s percent of abdominal fat.

Quality protein is defined as having a high ratio of essential amino acids within each type of dietary protein. In other words, the less quality protein or the fewer essential amino acids we consume, the more at risk we are of developing abdominal fat.

Essential amino acids are found in lean red meats, chicken, fish, protein shakes, some dairy products, such as cottage cheese and yogurt, beans, legumes, and egg whites. While you are following the Life Diet Plan, you will be having a quality protein in every meal, along with the proper amounts of the right dietary fats and complex carbohydrates. This perfect balance ensures that not only will you lose weight, you’ll also be getting a full complement of all the nutrients your body and brain require, and you’ll feel full and satisfied throughout the day.

Yes, Genes May Cause Tight Jeans

Other research points to abdominal weight gain as genetically predetermined: If your parents were overweight, you might have a gene that predisposes you to the same fate. Others blame the environment: not the air we breathe, but the environment we create, or that has been created around us. Studies show that when you hang around with people who are overweight, you will gain weight as well. A 2007 New York Times article reported that studies of both animal and human populations put weight gain firmly in the hands of one’s mother and her lifestyle choices during pregnancy.

According to the article, it’s surprising but true that mothers who ate sparingly during their pregnancy were likely to have children who grew into fat adults. Other studies point out that children are more likely to be fat if their mothers smoked during pregnancy. While all of these things may be true, it’s clearly too late to continue to blame your mother or your friends for

your expanding waistline. You need to start taking responsibility for your own health, because it’s your future that you must protect.

Stress Is A Factor

Our stressful lifestyle is another culprit. Elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol are thought to contribute to abdominal obesity. Cortisol is the hormone released by the adrenal glands in response to crisis. One of the most pronounced aspects of a high-cortisol state is a shutdown of digestive activity. During periods of stress, the brain instructs the body to prioritize its functions, and one of the first to go is the proper digestion of food. The body shifts its energy away from digestive functions and toward the extremities, making them ready for fighting or fleeing. If there was a real emergency, you would be glad that your body has this built-in intelligence. But this reflex works against you when stress is part of your daily existence, be it your work life, your home life, or even the way you are constantly worrying about your weight.

A secondary effect of cortisol is that it increases the production of insulin, the fat-storing hormone. Insulin is your body’s most-effective way of preserving calories gained from digestion and storing them for later use.

Unfortunately, these calories are converted into body fat, and when there is excess cortisol production, this fat typically accumulates around and inside the abdomen. The cortisol/insulin response was created thousands of years ago when a common trigger of stress was famine or lack of food: The body responded by slowing metabolism and storing belly fat in order to tap into vital nutrients for later use. However, each time we stress about something, the brain recognizes the shift and will release more insulin, and your body will reflexively store calories instead of burning them.

It’s Not Just How You Look, But How You Feel

Aside from the way that excess belly fat makes you look, it is affecting the way you feel. Weight affects every aspect of how your body functions.

Carrying around more than 10 pounds of body fat can make you experience many problems including anxiety, back pain, depression, diminished sexual function, fatigue, fluid retention, shortness of breath, sleep issues, sore joints and muscles.

Your long-term health outlook isn’t all that great either if you are carrying around a spare tire. In 2013, the American Medical Association officially recognized obesity as a disease and one that is linked to an increase in your risk for developing other serious conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, liver disease, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Scientists have also come to recognize that body fat, instead of body weight, is the key to evaluating obesity and the adverse consequences to your health. In a 2013 article published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, researchers found that excess stomach fat is significantly more dangerous than fat located in other places on the body over the long-term. The study revealed that people with excessive abdominal fat have greater risk of heart disease and cancer than those with a similar weight who carry fat in other areas of the body. In fact, there is no better indicator of premature death than a large belly.

If you want to live a long and healthy life, abdominal weight gain is the number one thing you’ve got to avoid. The good news is: it’s never too late to get rid of the extra pounds you are currently carrying in your belly. Working together, they canvassed for voter registration, created Freedom Schools and established the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party with the goal of challenging the segregationist state Democratic Party at the national convention in Atlantic City. Freedom Summer was marked by sustained and deadly violence, including the notorious murders of three civil rights workers, countless beatings and the burning and bombing of churches, homes and community centers. Mixing archival footage and recent interviews, this documentary is a searing portrait of that life-changing summer.

The actor, humorist and television personality offers up political prognostications, career reflections, thoughts on aging, his conversion to Christianity and much more Story and photos by David Laurell

sked to define the word “raconteur,” most kids growing up in the late 1950s, ‘60s and early ‘70s would have been as clueless as to its definition as they were to exactly what it was those who regularly appeared on television under that moniker actually did for a living. While most were either actors, directors, writers, comedians, musicians, or entertainers of some sort, they were really best-known for being guests on the talk- and gameshow circuit of the era.

Every baby boomer grew up with storytellers, bon vivants, wits, pundits and humorists such as Jack Douglas, Oscar Levant, Alexander King, Bennett Cerf, Fred Allen, Wally Cox, Charles Nelson Reilly, Tony Randall, Victor Borge, George Gobel, Truman Capote and so many other characters whose personas ranged from that of an eccentric relative or grouchy neighbor to a friendly local shop proprietor or erudite family friend.

One of the most popular of these personalities was Orson Bean – a cool, wisecracking charmer who was like a hip uncle, who, when your parents weren’t looking, would slip you a copy of “Playboy,” let you take a slug of his beer and tell you a filthy joke.

“Jack Paar would have real conversations with people,” Bean recalled. “The people he had on his show weren’t just plugging their latest project; they were great wits and storytellers.”

Asked why today’s state of raconteurism is in such deplorable shape, Bean shrugged. “I don’t think the audiences of today would put up with anything that lasts more than 30 seconds. Everything is bam, bam, bam. There is just not an audience out there for an Oscar Levant to spin a yarn. People won’t sit through two people having a real conversation. Paar loved his cast of eccentrics and the art of conversation, but today, people just don’t have the patience for storytellers anymore.”

The Bean Backstory

Born Dallas Burrows in Vermont 86 years ago, his career in show business stemmed from a childhood interest in magic and making people laugh.

Following a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, where he served in post-World War II occupied Japan, he took his comedic magic act to the stages of service clubs and small nightclubs throughout Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

Ultimately dropping the magic from his act, he began performing standup at New York’s storied Blue Angel nightclub where he went on to serve as the house comic from 1950 to 1960. During this time, he also made a guest appearance on an NBC Radio program, “The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street,” as “Dr. Orson Bean.” Soon after his debut performance, he was named as the show’s emcee and the character’s name, sans the doctorate, stuck.

In the wake of the 1947 House Committee on Un-American Activities hearings on alleged communist infiltration of the entertainment industry, 1950 saw Bean suspected of having ties to communism. He was blacklisted and was refused employment, mostly on television and radio, for about a year. When 28 LIFEAFTER50.COM June 2014

the blacklist began to subside, Bean, who had established himself as a wit who could also act, became a regular guest on talk and variety programs, while also regularly appearing in comedic and dramatic roles on television and Broadway.

A recurring panelist on “To Tell the Truth” in its various incarnations from the 1950s through the early 1990s, Bean also appeared as a celebrity guest on numerous game shows such as “Password,” “Match Game” and “Concentration.” A favorite of talk show hosts Mike Douglas and Johnny Carson, Bean appeared on “The Tonight Show” more than two hundred times and, throughout the 1970s, was regularly tapped as a substitute host for Carson.

After continuing to be a popular guest star on programs throughout the 1970s and ‘80s, the 1990s saw him cast as the shrewd businessman and storekeeper, Loren Bray, on CBS’s “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” while also doing roles in feature films.

While consistently working in regional and dinner theatre, both on stage and as a director, Bean has continued to appear in television on shows such as “Two and a Half Men,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and in a three-year recurring role as Roy Bender, Karen McCluskey’s love interest, on ABC’s “Desperate Housewives.”

Bean has also found success as a writer, penning tomes that, peppered with his humorous, touching, sometimes raunchy and totally irreverent style, have dealt with topics as diverse as his experience with Reichian therapy and recipes for cats that include such gastronomic feline delights as roast leg of spring mouse and mousetail soup, to his battle with alcohol and conversion to Christianity.

An On-The-Go Octogenarian

Today, a father of four adult children and nine grandchildren, Bean and his third wife, actress Alley Mills, who played the mother on ABC’s “The Wonder Years” and who currently appears as Pamela Douglas, on the CBS daytime drama “The Bold and The Beautiful,” live in Venice, California.

He recently published his autobiography, “Safe at Home,” (BalboaPress, 2013) in which, along with the tales of his fascinating career, he candidly writes about his mother’s suicide, the difficult relationship he had with his father, how much he adored his maternal grandfather, and how ridiculous it was that he was once suspected of being a communist.

Currently playing the lead role in playwright Steven Drukman’s dramedy, “Death of the Author,” which will run at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles through June 29, Bean possesses the energy and enthusiasm for life that is rare with those on the tail end of their 80s.

On a recent afternoon, as he strolled through the lobby of the Geffen on his way to chat with “Life After 50,” he unabashedly flirted with the theater’s receptionist, went into an impromptu rapid-fire performance of some old (and off-color) jokes, and then spent an hour going from one subject to the next with the same frenetic pace.

Brushing off a compliment on how great he looks, he rolled his eyes. “As

opposed to what?” he snapped back with a laugh. “I feel good,” he continued, “except for my knees, which are giving out on me. But I’m holding my own pretty well. I’m like my grandfather. I eat any damn thing I want, but not a lot of it. I do 25 slow push-ups every morning. It’s the only exercise I do religiously.

I also have a young wife and she keeps me young. She’s 22 years younger than me so, to me, she’s just a babe. Every day my name is not in the obit page I get up and go about my business. I keep waiting for the time to come when I’m supposed to sit in a rocking chair and whittle, but so far, that time has never come. I keep getting offered parts or cast in shows, so, although I have the rocking chair and a jackknife, I don’t know if I’m ever going to get around to using them.”

Asked to reflect on a career that has given him the opportunity to work with and meet just about every entertainment legend of the 20 century, he expressed humble gratitude. “I was very lucky – very fortunate – I got to work with so many of the greats – Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre and Helen Hayes. I got to work with Steve Allen, back before ‘The Tonight Show,’ on ‘Broadway Open House’ with Jerry Lester and Dagmar, and then with Paar, of course. I loved doing ‘To Tell The Truth.’ The panelists were cast like a sitcom. On my left would be the grand Kitty Carlisle with a feather boa and on the other side was Peggy Cass with her raspy voice. I also got to know and have a lot of respect for Ed Sullivan. People made fun of him, but he was a good guy. I had done his show seven times before they blacklisted me. After that, he couldn’t book me. He personally called me and said as soon as he could he would, and, as the blacklist was starting to fade, he was true to his word and booked me again.”

Bean says of all the broadcast and film legends with whom he has crossed paths, few, if any, impressed him more than Stan Laurel. “I spent a wonderful day with Stan at his home in Santa Monica,” recalled Bean, who would go on to be one of the founding members of the Sons of the Desert, the International Laurel and Hardy Society. “After that, we exchanged letters and he was always very curious about the current comedians of the day. I remember once I wrote to him – when my first child was born – and told him that I had a little girl and thought she looked like him. He wrote back and said now all I had to do was to have another child that looked like Hardy and my fortune would be made.”

The Political Punditry Of Bean

For someone who has, more recently, been known to be a political conservative and supported John McCain’s 2008 bid for the presidency, Bean contends his political views have changed very little over the years. “It has always been said most people start out on the left and then move to the right as they get older,” he said. “I’ll let the Darwin crowd make what they will of that. But I don’t think I have changed as much as the political parties have. When I was blacklisted in the 1950s, we were all lefties, but I was never a communist. That all came about because I was hot for a communist girl who dragged me to a couple of meetings with her. Luckily for me, I was working on Broadway, and so while my television work dried up, the blacklist never affected Broadway, because it was all backed by the television and film sponsors. It was the big companies and corporations that did the backlisting, not the networks. The blacklist was a great inconvenience and expense for the networks. It was basically a protection racket and the networks were being charged $50 a head to clear the actors and writers.”

Asked where he finds himself in today’s political environment, he sighed. “I’m so sick of politics, I don’t even want to hear stuff I agree with,” he laughed.

“I don’t listen to talk radio or the cable channels, because everything I hear is bullshit. I thought Obama’s election was a great thing. I didn’t support him or vote for him, but the night he was elected, I thought that maybe it would finally put racism in this country to bed, because a majority of whites had voted for an African-American. Sadly, I was wrong, and it has exposed just how raciest this country still is in some areas.”

Questioned on where he sees the nation going politically over the next few years, he referenced the cliché that Republicans have never missed an opportunity to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. “I don’t know who first coined that term, but the Republicans have been, and currently are, doing that very well. I personally think that no matter who the Republicans run for president in 2016, that person will do only one thing – see to it that Hillary gets many more votes than she would have otherwise. And, while I do consider myself to be a conservative, I won’t be unhappy with her election. She is totally qualified and I think she will be a good president.”

“I do believe we have an obligation to be happy and show love to one another.”

Really? Isn’t that quite a defeatist attitude for a conservative to adopt so emphatically?

“Let’s be realistic,” he said.

“Unless something unforeseen happens, I think her election is inevitable. The only reason she is not president right now is because a highly intelligent, charismatic African-American guy with a great smile and a winning personality who was a great speaker and had an attractive family came along.

So she cooled her heels for eight years and will run again with no one even close to having what Obama had out there on either side.”

Dealing With The Maker

Having never embraced religious teachings or a belief in God as a child or young man, Bean experienced a late-in-life epiphany while attending a 12-step program that led him to Christianity.

“Looking back, I don’t know if I was an alcoholic, but I was clearly drinking too much because of a painful divorce,” Bean revealed. “I was going to these meetings and listening to all the talk about a higher power. Then, at one meeting, this guy got up and spoke and it was just mesmerizing. He had done hard time in the pen. This was a tough-looking character, but he had such love in his heart. After the meeting, I grabbed him on the sidewalk and told him that I had a hard time believing in a higher power and in God and asked him what I should do. He told me to get down on my knees every night and say ‘If there’s somebody there, I want to thank you for my day.’ And then, when you get up in the morning, get back on your knees and say ‘If there’s anybody listening, I want to thank you for my night’s sleep.’ I listened and asked him why I had to get on my knees and he said ‘Because He likes it.’ That’s all he said. We stood there looking at one another and then he walked away.”

Because he was at such a low point in his life, where all else had failed, Bean decided it couldn’t hurt to follow the instructions he was given. “I did it for weeks and felt like a fool,” said Bean. “I hoped my kids would never catch me and wonder what new and crazy thing I was into now. But, little by little, I felt as if my prayer – if that’s what it was – was staring to be heard. And then, as more time went by, I started to feel that whomever it was that was listening, loved me.”

As a new convert, Bean never went in the direction so many do when, bolstered by their newfound spiritual experience, they become so heavenlymined that they become no Earthly good. “I’m certainly not a pious Christian,” he laughed. “Someone asked me if I regularly go to church and I said no, that I like to leave the middle man out and deal directly with the Maker. I think Jesus hates most of what is being said and done in his name today. If he walked into most churches, he would be snubbed. People would say: ‘Hey, who’s the guy with the long hair and sandals?’ To me, my relationship with God is evident everywhere I am. When I see a hot babe walk by and my wife says ‘What are you looking at?’ I say ‘Call me a religious zealot, but when I see God’s handiwork in the form of those legs, I can’t help but to worship.’ ”

Orson’s Obligation To Be Happy

Queried on his life with Ally (when not checking out hot babes), Bean said he usually does the food shopping while she’s at work. “Which is fine with me,” he said, “Because I get what I like to eat. I get the Brussels sprouts for her and the pasta and meat sauce for me.”

The couple also enjoys spending time with Bean’s children and grandchildren.

“I love that my children love one another,” said Bean. “That makes me very happy.”

Being happy is something Bean not only is, it is something he believes we have a duty to be. “I do believe we have an obligation to be happy and show love to one another,” he opined. “I believe that God wants us to be happy. When

my kids were little and I would see them splashing around in a bubble bath and laughing their heads off uproariously, it just filled my heart like nothing else. So if you believe there is a heavenly father up there, what would fill his heart more than seeing us happy and loving one another.”

Bean paused, and for the first time his ever-present smile faded. “I think His heart is pretty broken these days.”

What – Bean Worry?

Asked if, as he inches ever closer to his 90s, he has adopted any philosophy on aging, Bean offered the advice that one not spend any time worrying if they can.

“I am a devotee of the great philosopher, Alfred E. Neuman,” he said with a laugh. “I don’t worry about things. I have put that into practice to the greatest extent that I can. I pay for no insurance that I’m not required to have – no life insurance, no fire insurance. If my house burns down, I’ll take it as a sign from God that it’s time to move. I do take the health insurance I receive from my union, but I only have the minimum insurance I am required to have on my car.

If my car gets smacked up, I’ll pay to have it fixed and that will be a lot cheaper than having paid years of insurance. The reason the John Hancock building is such a fine edifice is because, like the Vegas casinos, the odds are always in their favor. They always win. So I don’t play that game and I’m taking all that money I saved by not buying insurance and taking my family – all the kids and grandkids – to Massachusetts this summer. Insurance is for people who worry about what might happen and I don’t worry.”

While worrying is not a part of Bean’s makeup, he will admit to being concerned about the world his grandchildren will be inheriting.

“Someone once said that without hope there can be no true despair,” he said. “I don’t know. I think as a world, we are in pretty bad shape and I’ve pretty much given up on hope and retreated into my yard. I think my grandkids are going to have it rough, so I have to just say, I love you, but you’re on your own. I hope you will always know how much you were loved by me and go out there and do your best to deal with the enemy – who is namely, everyone you meet,” he added with a laugh.ª

Death Of The Author

“I play an old professor, J.Trunbull Sykes, in the world of academe, mentoring a young professor who will be taking over when I retire,” Bean said of “Death of the Author,” the play he is currently appearing in at the Geffen Playhouse.

“The younger professor has a student who has been accused of plagiarizing a term paper, and the student’s girlfriend is the one who is being suspected of writing the paper. I am chronologically too old for the part, but I think I pull it off, although, that doesn’t mean much. I think I can play anything. Hell, I think I can play Juliet.”

Written by Pulitzer-nominated playwright Steven Drukman and directed by Bart DeLorenzo, the show premiered at the Geffen last month and will run through the end of June. Along with Bean, the show stars Austin Butler of the CW’s “The Carrie Diaries,” David Clayton Rogers of ABC’s “Nashville,” and Lyndon Smith of NBC’s “Parenthood.”

I

love Father’s Day, mostly because I love my father! I’m a true “daddy’s girl” and the strength of our relationship and the amount of effort and love he has always put into it has, without a doubt, shaped me into the person I am today.

In a way, I have always known that, but it’s only now, as an adult, that I realize how important the relationship I have had, and continue to have, with my father has been in laying the foundation for who I am and how I view the world.

This year, with Father’s Day approaching, I became interested in finding out the history behind the day we honor our dads. I discovered it originated in Spokane, Washington in June of 1910, thanks to a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd. Her own father raised six children by himself after the death of her mother. It was quite uncommon for widowed fathers of the time to do that, since most remarried quickly or sought help from female family members. She felt her dad, and fathers in general, deserved a day of recognition, and the nation quickly agreed and embraced this new tradition.

As I learned about the history of Father’s Day, I related to the feelings of its founder. After my parents divorced when I was 13, my dad didn’t slip out of our lives; neither did my sister and I fall by the wayside as he searched for a new life or wife. We always remained his top priority.

Growing up, there was never a question of whether or not my dad wanted to be with us. We knew he did.

He never complained about not getting to spend time with his friends or needing a break from his parenting duties. In fact, it was just the opposite. Whatever activities my sister and I participated in, my dad was actively involved. He’d pick us up and drop us off at school, join us on field trips, diligently watch my sports practices, and be in the front row for my theater performances and dance recitals. His consistent involvement and support made all the difference in the world and I owe him so much for that.

I know something only a daughter knows – how important the relationship is between a girl and her father. I’m a firm believer that if children get positive feedback and encouragement from their parents, their self-esteem will reap the rewards. The first man in a girl’s life is her father, and their relationship paves the way for her future relationships.

Growing up, and still to this day, my dad is always the first to tell me how beautiful I am or how well I did at something. And while he’s also the first to point out a mistake or where I have room for improvement, that honesty has also helped me learn more about myself.

I’m certainly not going to go all “Samantha Brick” here (if that name is not familiar, Google her, right after reading this), but I know that my father’s compliments and approval have made all the difference in the

self-confidence I possess as an adult. While it’s always nice to get a nod of approval or compliments from the opposite sex, I’ve never judged my worth or value based on someone else’s opinion of me. I truly believe that has to do with the approval I have for myself that was solidly ingrained in me by my father.

In today’s world of compulsive social networking and relentless competition, judging and bullying, I think it’s all the more important for parents to do everything possible to instill self-confidence in their children. As a mother, I have come to really understand that – and to also understand it’s a challenging job for which we should support others and seek support when we need it.

As parents, we all have to play the cards we are dealt and deal with the situations we find ourselves in. The most you can ask of any parent is that they do their best and unconditionally love and support their child the best they know how. Being a parent – a good parent – is very difficult. And, as we all know, it is a job that’s never finished.

That’s one of the greatest things about my dad. Although my sister and I are now adults with children of our own, he still continues to teach and guide us. His approach with raising us has always been that he’s training us for life, whether it’s reading and relaying the latest health and diet tips, reminding us “It’s a war out there!” when we’re driving, or encouraging us to exercise, because, as he always says: “Our health is our most taken-for-granted luxury.” My dad is always reinforcing habits he knows will Photo by David Laurell make us better people (and safer drivers).

While I love my father for all these reasons, the thing I’m most grateful for is that I get to share him with my daughter, Jemma. I see the pure joy and happiness on both of their faces when they see each other. I love that he gets to actively play a role in seeing her grow and that I get to share that with both of them.

To me, this year, it really hit me that Father’s Day is the day we honor, thank and celebrate our fathers, and father figures, for the impact and contributions they’ve had on our lives, and the lives of our children.

This Father’s Day, whether you’re remembering your dad or fortunate enough to be celebrating with him, take a moment to reflect on the impact he has had on you and share your gratitude for that with him. In this hectic world, we sometimes forget to tell those we love just how much they mean to us. A Seagoing Overview Of The Baltics Experiencing a voyage to remember on the Regent Seven Seas Voyager

T

he cruise experience has always been about getting an overview of a new location and then deciding whether or not you would like to return. While spending just eight to 24 hours in a world-class city such as Stockholm or Copenhagen hardly does them justice, an overview of these magnificent cities, during a cruise on the exceptional Regent Seven Seas Voyager, is sure to whet your appetite to return for further exploration.

Stockholm, Sweden

The voyage begins in Stockholm, and, before you board, you should definitely plan to spend a minimum of 24 hours in this city of breathtaking islands, bridges and marinas. Hundreds of years of neutrality have served the city well with streets that still follow medieval layouts and 17th-century architecture from the days when Sweden was a major military power.

An important component of your exploration is the Stockholm Card which allows free transportation on the bus, train and ferry and admission to 75 museums and attractions. Points of interests include Gram Stan (Old Town), Stockholm City (New Town), the Vasa Museum (a preserved 1682 war ship that sunk in the harbor on its maiden voyage due to an overindulgence of heavy weapons), city hall (where the Nobel party is held), the National Museum of Fine Art and the Royal Dramatic Theater where Garbo and Ingrid Bergman studied, and film director Ingmar Bergman once served as the artistic director.

St. Petersburg, Russia

Built on a swamp in 1703, St. Petersburg rises magnificently from the sea on boulders, stones and the bones of slave laborers. For many, it is the centerpiece of the cruise and the Voyager wisely spends extra time in what was designed as Peter the Great’s “Window to the West.” Peter moved the capital from

Moscow, and later, the city was the birthplace of the Russian Revolution. Millions of tourists come to St Petersburg every year to see its museums and cathedrals. A visa is required to tour the city on your own, and it is strongly recommended that you book a land tour through the Voyager. Attractions include the Hermitage Museum, the Bolshoi Ballet, the Russian Museum, the Mariinsky Theater and St. Isaac’s Cathedral. River boat excursions, concerts, shopping expeditions and day trips can also be arranged. Make sure, though, you are dressed appropriately, because this former imperial capital city of 4.8 million people offers only 31 days without snow or rain.

Tallinn, Estonia

Peter the Great said that if he would have seen Tallinn first, it would have been the location of choice for his “Window to the West.” With its limestone foundation and towering cliffs, the capital of this small Baltic nation of 1.3 million is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site and is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the world. Estonia has experienced less than 50 years of independence in its entire existence and the varied architectural styles of past conquerors remain throughout this former Hanseatic city. Once again, a Tallinn Card – accepted in nearly 100 locations – proves the best way to explore this enchanting enclave of 400,000 people in an eight hour period. Lunch at the Olde Hansa medieval restaurant is an unforgettable experience that no one should miss.

Helsinki, Finland

Our splendid guide escorted us to the presidential palace, city hall (used in the film “Reds”), the Sibelius Monument (in honor of national composer Jean Sibelius), the Temppeliaukio (the rock church, so named because it has been built into solid rock),

and the parliament building. Quite simply, Helsinki is a jewel of a city. We took a small boat for a tour to Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s largest sea-fortress islands. For lunch we had reindeer in a berry sauce. “Isn’t it the best you’ve ever had?” asked my guide. “Indeed, it is,” I replied, although I refrained from mentioning it was also my first gastronomic experience with my favorite childhood animal.

Copenhagen, Denmark

All good things must end, and the Voyager docks at Copenhagen’s harbor at 8 a.m. This is another city that demands extra time spent before your flight home. Copenhagen is a forward-thinking, vibrant city of green spires, copper-roofed buildings, medieval streets and canals. Established in 1843, Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park that reportedly inspired Walt Disney to create Disneyland. Take a stroll on Strøget, Europe’s longest pedestrian shopping street. Better yet, experience it from a bicycle, which the city provides at no cost.

The Hippest Trip in America: Soul Train and the Evolution of Culture & Style

They should have called you Super-Fly. Yep, that’s what you were, dancing in front of your television every Saturday, spinning on the carpet and waving your arms around until your mom yelled: “You’re gonna break something.” But you didn’t care ‘cause you were the flyest of fly. The only thing you were going to bust was a move, just like on “Soul Train.” And in “The Hippest Trip in America” by Nelson George, you’ll read about the iconic program that you never missed.

Everyone knew that Don Cornelius had ambition. He was a car salesman, policeman and insurance agent before his “foghorn voice” led him to radio in 1966. He made the transition to television two years later and soon realized there was a need for a “black” television show. He presented the idea, then found major corporate sponsorship and, on October 2, 1971, “Soul Train” debuted locally in Chicago.

The show was an overnight success, but Cornelius knew there was more to this idea. With another sponsor on board for a nationwide launch, Cornelius pitched the show to the networks, but they turned it down.

Undeterred, he decided to syndicate “Soul Train” and moved the show to Los Angeles.

Though the music was always the focus of “Soul Train,” Cornelius knew the dancers (in particular, those in the “Soul Train” line) were what brought viewers back.

In L.A., scouts kept their eyes open for promising teens who could dance, often mining prospects from area clubs. Dancers performed for free, but the real appeal of being a “Soul Train” dancer was the fame and the show biz opportunities that came with it. It seemed as though every regular viewer wanted to be a “Soul Train” regular, too.

But as much as Cornelius controlled his show (and, to a certain extent, his dancers), he couldn’t control what happened culturally. Early 1990s fashions confounded him, music videos concerned him, and gangsta rap made him uncomfortable. And so, though the show would continue for another 13 years, Cornelius announced in 1993 that he would step down as “Soul Train” host, although he remained the show’s main creative force from behind the scenes.

From its first pages and throughout, the word “joy” crops up often in “The Hippest Trip in America,” and for good reason: it was everywhere in the show and even more in this book.

I myself took great joy in having author Nelson George send me to YouTube. His descriptions of what happened through the years on “Soul Train” made me want to see, too, and there are plenty of clips to be found online. The interviews with former dancers, learning more about the history of the show, and George’s offering of little-known tidbits made this a great (and surprisingly fast-paced) read filled with reminiscing, “love, peace, and soul.”

Get out your bell-bottoms and your best dancin’ shoes, make sure you have a good Internet connection, and get on the search for your copy of “The Hippest Trip in America.” I assure you, it’s a book you’ll want to bust out and find.

A Look Back This month marks 50 years since the release of Jan and Dean’s hit song, “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena.”

The inspiration for the song came from a hugely popular ad campaign by Dodge that debuted in early 1964 and starred actress Kathryn Minner. The commercials showed the white-haired, elderly Minner speeding down a street in a modified Dodge. She would stop, look out the window and say: “Put a Dodge in your garage, Hon-ey!”

The concept for the commercials stemmed from a folk archetype of Southern California’s mid-20th century. Soon after World War II ended, many retirement-age couples relocated from various parts of the country to Southern California, especially to Pasadena. That meant within a decade or so, as the husbands died, the city become known for its high percentage of elderly widows who were left with their husband’s car that they rarely, if ever, drove. That fact translated into a sales pitch for used car salesmen throughout Southern California who began telling prospective buyers that the previous owner of a vehicle was “a little old lady from Pasadena who only drove it to church on Sundays,” suggesting the car had little wear. After being cast in the Dodge commercials at the age of 65, Minner became a celebrity specializing in playing little old ladies. She was a regular on many television shows of the era, appeared in films including “The Love Bug” and “The Shakiest Gun in The West,” and was pictured with Jan and Dean on their album “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena.” Minner died of a heart attack in 1969 and is buried at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills.

hen it comes to icons of our youth, the thought of musicians David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash performing at Woodstock, humorist and actor Orson Bean spewing witticisms on the panel of “To Tell the Truth” and Super Bowlwinning quarterback Joe Namath running off the field of the Orange Bowl signaling that the New York Jets were the number one team in football are all indelibly etched into the mind of every baby boomer.

Who of us – who bore witness to those times – would have ever thought that well over 40 years on, Crosby, Stills and Nash would still be recording and touring, Bean would still be appearing in television and stage productions and Namath would still be involved with numerous successful business ventures including a youth football camp he began when he was just 28?

In this month’s issue, we catch up with these icons of the 1960s and ‘70s – Crosby and Bean via sit-down interviews and Namath by way of a beautiful Father’s Day tribute written by his oldest daughter, Jessica, who is a talented writer and photographer.

For those of us who grew up in the era which saw that trio burst into the nation’s consciousness, we have lived through the accidents, assassinations and addictions that robbed us – far too early – of many of the brightest, most talented and creative people to have ever walked this planet. My 88-year-old dad was living independently and I live in another part of the state, so when he didn’t answer one of my recent regular check-in calls, I phoned his neighbor to check on him. She found him needing help, called the ambulance and I was on the first plane to be with him. When he returned home, it was clear he was going to need help. I was going to hire a live-in housekeeper, but one of his neighbors offered to help. My dad was receptive to the offer, as was I. We agreed on a weekly live-in rate for five days a week and my dad’s long-time housekeeper agreed to work the weekend. Everything seemed to be working out, but then my dad began growing irritable with me during my calls and told me I didn’t need to be “spying” on him.

I called the neighbor to see what was up and she was also short with me. Then my dad’s regular housekeeper called to tell me she had been fired. I immediately called my dad to find out what was going on. He told me I’m a bad daughter and I wasn’t welcome anymore. I called the neighbor and she hung up on me. Smelling a rat, I went online to check his trust bank account that I help him manage and was denied access. I called the bank manager who advised me he could not discuss the account because there are new trust documents. I called the police to do a welfare check.

They reported back that my dad was fine, didn’t want to see me, and told them I had been taking money from him, but wouldn’t press charges if I stayed away. I’m worried sick about what might happen to him, not to mention distraught over the thought of being arrested if I try to see him again. I also don’t want to do anything that will humiliate him. What are my options?

You need to protect your dad and yourself from this rat of a neighbor. If she has been this bold in such a short period of time, she will go on to clean him out of house and home. If she gets away with it, I assure you, THAT will be more humiliating for him than any steps you take to protect him.

At a minimum, you need to freeze his assets through civil court proceedings to prevent the neighbor from taking his accounts and even transferring his house. In your dad’s case, your best route would be to initiate a conservatorship and trust action to temporarily prevent any new power of attorney or trust documents being used on his behalf. Although, in many cases, these actions are filed when someone is taking advantage of an individual experiencing cognitive defectives from dementia, they can also be used to protect people who are susceptible to undue influence.

In addition to taking necessary steps to protect your father and his assets temporarily, you are taking steps to have a more long-lasting appointment of someone to be in charge and accountable for the management of his finances. Normally, you would be asking the court to appoint you to do this, however, now that your credibility has been questioned, you might have to consider asking for the temporary appointment of a professional fiduciary until your name is cleared. As such, you should also be prepared to present any financial documentation proving that you properly managed your dad’s finances.

Once someone is appointed, it might be necessary to file a proceeding to recover any monies or other property improperly taken by the neighbor. This might be an action against her as the fiduciary under the power of attorney and trust or a civil elder abuse action.

Your first step would be to identify and retain an elder law attorney with significant experience in the probate court system in your father’s county of residency. The attorney will need copies of all your dad’s estate planning documents and any other appropriate financial and medical documentation. Also, these cases are fact driven, so the more information you can give the attorney, the better. Lastly, many families don’t pursue court action because, like you, they are embarrassed for their parent or even themselves.

When And Why Should You Make A Change?

Deciding to replace a financial advisor is always a difficult decision. I often see folks replace someone they should have kept or keep a relationship going they should have terminated long ago. The question investors should ask themselves from time to time is: Is there any reason I should replace my financial advisor? The answer to that question is relatively easy and comes down to three considerations: performance, philosophy and personality. Do you fire your advisor for bad performance (or not enough good performance)? The answer can be both yes and no. You have to look deeper. You have to ask the question: Why did my account perform poorly or fail to meet my expectations?

If the account is invested correctly and you simply experienced a poor performance based on your allocation (think of 2008), then you shouldn’t just pull the plug on your advisor. However, if a year like 2008 revealed a level of risk you didn’t want and weren’t aware you were taking, then the poor performance is a perfect reason to leave.

This raises the question my new client asked: “My accounts are making money so why should I make a change?”

If this is your circumstance, don’t look at current returns, but rather at the worstcase scenario based on your current advisor’s approach. Using that information, determine if it all fits in with what you are willing to live with. Perhaps your advisor is taking too much risk for your goals and personality. In that case, your returns may currently be excellent, but the potential losses when the market does turn down could be unacceptably high. This leads us to look at an advisor’s philosophy and personality.

When my client asked how to leave an advisor who was performing well, my answer was: “Philosophy and personality.” When you are working with a financial advisor or wealth manager, their philosophy and personality must fit yours. My client had a very low risk tolerance and was unwilling to see even two quarters in a row of principal losses. Yet, while their accounts were doing well, it was inevitable the client will experience those types of losses; it is just a matter of time.

It is often said a leopard can’t change its spots and the same is usually true with people’s philosophic make up. If you are very conservative and need that approach with your assets, you need to determine if your advisor shares your opinion. When you call and say: “I’m losing too much, get me out of the stock market,” does your advisor share your philosophy or do they try to talk you out of it?

Staying with an advisor or manager who tries to force you to stay the course when you can’t afford to (financially or mentally) is a mistake. So make sure your advisor has the same beliefs and thought processes you do. If you are confident that they do, then rely on their expertise to implement a plan that is right for you.

Make Sure You Have the Right Advisor With the stock market near historic highs, now is the time to make sure you are working with someone whose performance, philosophy and personality are the right fit for you. All the designations, degrees or success stories don’t mean a hill of beans if the advisor’s philosophy and personality don’t fit with yours. It really does go beyond performance to the how and why of that performance.

s all that health food you’re eating making you fit – or fat? Take a peek at the ingredient list and the nutritional-facts label on any package of “healthy foods” in your fridge or pantry. With a little looking (for which you will not only need your reading glasses but also a good strong magnifying glass), you just might find the answer.

First, Check To See: Are the total fat grams, multiplied by nine calorie grams, more than 30 percent of the total calories? If so, you have a “fatty” product. Remember, even healthy fat makes you fat.

Are the saturated-fat grams more than 10 percent of the total fat grams? If so, you have a product that has too much unhealthy fat, which not only affects the waistline, but can ruin your health.

Is there a significant amount of “unaccounted for” fat (total fat grams listed, minus the amounts listed for specific types of fat)? If so, you have a product that has too much trans-fat, which is the unhealthy byproduct of hydrogenation and is extremely bad for you in any significant quantity.

Is it a carbohydrate-rich food that contains highly processed, refined ingredients and few, if any, grams of fiber? If so, you are in the health-free zone! Choose fiber rich, whole-grain-based breads, cereals and crackers, and your body will process your intake efficiently, without causing a spike in blood sugar or converting the excess to body fat.

Here’s How To Interpret What Your Reading: Health claims describe the relationship between a food, food component and/or dietary supplement, and reducing the risk of a disease or health-related condition.

An example to look for might be, “Soluble fiber from oatmeal may reduce the risk of heart disease, as part of a low-saturated fat, low-cholesterol diet.”

Watch out for the disclaimer that accompanies preliminary health claims. These are made on incomplete, shaky evidence. If you find a disclaimer that says something like, “The FDA has determined that there is little scientific evidence and is not conclusive” – put the product down. The responsibility for ensuring the validity of these claims rests with the manufacturer, FDA, or, in the case of advertising, the Federal Trade Commission.

A Tr�e Daddy’s Girl’s Take On Father’s Day

I

love Father’s Day, mostly because I love my father! I’m a true “daddy’s girl” and the strength of our relationship and the amount of effort and love he has always put into it has, without a doubt, shaped me into the person I am today.

In a way, I have always known that, but it’s only now, as an adult, that I realize how important the relationship I have had, and continue to have, with my father has been in laying the foundation for who I am and how I view the world.

This year, with Father’s Day approaching, I became interested in finding out the history behind the day we honor our dads. I discovered it originated in Spokane, Washington in June of 1910, thanks to a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd. Her own father raised six children by himself after the death of her mother. It was quite uncommon for widowed fathers of the time to do that, since most remarried quickly or sought help from female family members. She felt her dad, and fathers in general, deserved a day of recognition, and the nation quickly agreed and embraced this new tradition.

As I learned about the history of Father’s Day, I related to the feelings of its founder. After my parents divorced when I was 13, my dad didn’t slip out of our lives; neither did my sister and I fall by the wayside as he searched for a new life or wife. We always remained his top priority.

Growing up, there was never a question of whether or not my dad wanted to be with us. We knew he did. He never complained about not getting to spend time with his friends or needing a break from his parenting duties. In fact, it was just the opposite. Whatever activities my sister and I participated in, my dad was actively involved. He’d pick us up and drop us off at school, join us on field trips, diligently watch my sports practices, and be in the front row for my theater performances and dance recitals. His consistent involvement and support made all the difference in the world and I owe him so much for that.

I know something only a daughter knows – how important the relationship is between a girl and her father. I’m a firm believer that if children get positive feedback and encouragement from their parents, their self-esteem will reap the rewards. The first man in a girl’s life is her father, and their relationship paves the way for her future relationships.

Growing up, and still to this day, my dad is always the first to tell me how beautiful I am or how well I did at something. And while he’s also the first to point out a mistake or where I have room for improvement, that honesty has also helped me learn more about myself.

I’m certainly not going to go all “Samantha Brick” here (if that name is not familiar, Google her, right after reading this), but I know that my father’s compliments and approval have made all the difference in the

self-confidence I possess as an adult. While it’s always nice to get a nod of approval or compliments from the opposite sex, I’ve never judged my worth or value based on someone else’s opinion of me. I truly believe that has to do with the approval I have for myself that was solidly ingrained in me by my father.

In today’s world of compulsive social networking and relentless competition, judging and bullying, I think it’s all the more important for parents to do everything possible to instill self-confidence in their children. As a mother, I have come to really understand that – and to also understand it’s a challenging job for which we should support others and seek support when we need it.

As parents, we all have to play the cards we are dealt and deal with the situations we find ourselves in. The most you can ask of any parent is that they do their best and unconditionally love and support their child the best they know how. Being a parent – a good parent – is very difficult. And, as we all know, it is a job that’s never finished.

That’s one of the greatest things about my dad. Although my sister and I are now adults with children of our own, he still continues to teach and guide us. His approach with raising us has always been that he’s training us for life, whether it’s reading and relaying the latest health and diet tips, reminding us “It’s a war out there!” when we’re driving, or encouraging us to exercise, because, as he always says: “Our health is our most taken-for-granted luxury.” My dad is always reinforcing habits he knows will make us better people (and safer drivers).

While I love my father for all these reasons, the thing I’m most grateful for is that I get to share him with my daughter, Jemma. I see the pure joy and happiness on both of their faces when they see each other. I love that he gets to actively play a role in seeing her grow and that I get to share that with both of them.

To me, this year, it really hit me that Father’s Day is the day we honor, thank and celebrate our fathers, and father figures, for the impact and contributions they’ve had on our lives, and the lives of our children.

This Father’s Day, whether you’re remembering your dad or fortunate enough to be celebrating with him, take a moment to reflect on the impact he has had on you and share your gratitude for that with him. In this hectic world, we sometimes forget to tell those we love just how much they mean to us.
