Greetings, LIFE Alumni and Friends!

Fall is always one of the busiest times of the year at Life University, and this year is certainly no exception. Beginning with our biggest and best Fall CE event ever, where more than 1,600 alumni and friends attended classes, reunions and parties, and an additional 100-plus just came to be in the moment, the season got off to a rousing start. Not to mention, during that momentous weekend, we received approximately $25,000 in cash contributions.

Thank you to all of our alumni and friends who attended. I always enjoy seeing many faces that I don’t get to see nearly often enough. And for those that didn’t make it out to LIFE for Fall CE, you missed out, and you won’t want to miss an even bigger and better Fall CElebration next year, Sept. 28-Oct. 2, 2016.

Fall is also a time when we see a lot of fresh faces in the classroom, with many traditional high school graduates enrolling at LIFE and in college for the first time in our undergraduate programs. Although our Doctor of Chiropractic will always be our flagship program, we are very excited about the growth of both our undergraduate and graduate programs and the opportunities those programs give us to reach more vitalistic visionaries. And with the growth of our undergraduate and graduate programs, we are sure to have more and more potential chiropractors on campus for an even longer period of time, taking full advantage of the vast amount of experiences LIFE has to offer.

To this end, we’ve actually started an Eagle Madness Preview Day this year, the undergraduate version of LIFE Leadership Weekend, where students, counselors, parents and career advisors can visit LIFE to learn more about our innovative undergraduate programs, beautiful campus and the many benefits that come with attending the “not-so-little University that is changing the world.” We are

looking forward to it becoming a staple event just like LLW. This year also saw the first graduates in our master’s programs in Positive Psychology and Athletic Training — two of LIFE’s most unique degree offerings. Our Positive Psychology master’s degree is the only one in the Southeast and one of just three in the entire country, while our Athletic Training master’s degree is one of only 35 in the world.

And although it was late last year when we announced that LIFE is going abroad with our LIFE Europe campus in Rome, Italy — scheduled to open in 2018 — it was 2015 when we really started to see the details of this project come to life. LIFE Europe’s chiropractic curriculum will mirror classes at the main LIFE campus.

Because the curriculum at LIFE Europe will match the University in the United States, students will have the opportunity to switch between campuses, allowing for study abroad in Europe or the U.S. while staying on track academically. The mirrored program will also allow faculty and research exchanges.

As you can see, we have been busy, but there’s nothing I would rather be doing than continuing to bring LIFE to new heights, with a lot of help from our fantastic team of staff, faculty, students and, of course, alumni and friends. Without the generous contributions of your time, talent and, yes, money, all of the groundbreaking things happening at LIFE would not be possible. With that, I hope that you enjoy this issue of Your Extraordinary LIFE and that you have an excellent fall and winter.

Here’s where we visited from mid-May to August:

SOUTH CAROLINA With summer now in full swing, Leffard ventured to the shore for the South Carolina Chiropractic Association’s annual convention in Myrtle Beach. LIFE’s alumni and friends are leading the way in South Carolina, and we are excited for others to follow in their footsteps. Leffard enjoyed spending time with new LIFE grad Dr. Steve Wallin (’14), and a big thank you to Dr. David Hall (’86) for agreeing to help with his reunion efforts next year.

PENNSYLVANIA LIFE again took Philadelphia by storm for the Collegiate Rugby Championship, one of the biggest tournaments of the year for the LIFE Undergraduate Rugby Team.

In addition to showcasing its athletic prowess on one the biggest stages, LIFE hosted two very successful After Hours in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. It was great seeing Drs. Scott Brown (’87), Richard Cobb (’82), Blaise Glodowski (’96), Albert

Although the Life U Running Eagles fell short of the championship match, we were thankful for the support and presence of our alumni and friends. By the weekend’s end, we recruited two additional State Reps, Dr. Troy Doxey (’02) for Montana and Dr. Todd Watson (’98) for Delaware.

A few months later, Alumni Relations Manager Mary Ellen Leffard returned north to have one-on-one meetings with various alumni and friends in the state.

Visits included ones with Drs. Penny and Daniel Koval who hope to partner with LIFE’s Research Department and Drs. Lynn Strazzo (’13) and Scott McGillivray (’13) who just opened their new clinic in Salunga.

ALABAMA The weekend following SCCA, Leffard visited Alabama to attend the Alabama State Chiropractic Association’s annual convention. Held in Florence, Leffard connected with many familiar faces at the booth, including with Dr. Toya Burton (’02), who agreed to serve as a 2016 reunion chair, and Dr. Marc Lerner (’05), who is busy opening his second practice in Tennessee. LIFEforce student Will Payne returned to Alabama the next month to represent LIFE at the Path Wellness Fair in Alexander City. Thanks to all for spreading the message!

LOUISIANA LIFE was callin’ Baton Rouge as Director of Development Erin Dancer headed to Louisiana to meet with Dr. Jay Perniciaro (’91). One of our 1974 founders in the President’s Circle, Perniciaro is happy to be able to support the University financially and give back. Perniciaro also agreed to serve as a reunion chair for his class and gave Dancer some names of classmates to help “get the bank back together.” Thanks for your continued support!

MISSOURI Leffard kicked off the new fiscal year with her annual Midwest road trip. She had a wonderful lunch with Dr. Ken Osia (’82), who has a thriving practice in downtown St. Louis. By the time lunch ended, he had agreed to help with his 35th reunion in 2017. Excited to have you on board, Dr. Osia!

NEW JERSEY The month of August was kicked off with good food and good company at the New Jersey After Hours hosted at the home of Dr. Bill (’85) and Janice Voyce in Califon. Familiar faces included Drs. Michael Fox (’84), Pat Ryan (’96) and Zach Voyce (’13) and five prospective students. Looking forward to making this an annual event!

GEORGIA As we finished out the month of June, Manager of Constituent Relationships Mark Elam represented LIFE at the American Black Chiropractic Association’s 34th annual national convention hosted in Atlanta, the home of ABCA national headquarters. Drs. Winston Carhee (’03), president of ABCA; Jerry Hardee, special assistant to the president at LIFE; and Mimi Sweat (’04, ’10, ’14) were just a few that stopped by to visit Elam.

The suite allows LIFE to connect with alumni and friends in a more intimate setting. In two nights, more than 50 stopped by with four agreeing to join our State Rep tribe!

GEORGIA While Dancer represented LIFE in Orlando, Alumni Relations Coordinator Kelsey Donaldson experienced the high-energy AMPED Conference in Atlanta. More than 600 chiropractors, staff, students and prospective students packed the hotel for a full day of inspiration and insight.

A few weeks later, Donaldson headed a few miles from campus to the Georgia Chiropractic Council’s annual convention with IMPACT Director Dr. Dawn BartonCadwallader. LIFE was proud to be one of the platinum sponsors of the convention! Barton-Cadwallader addressed attendees at Saturday’s luncheon and encouraged all to get involved with LIFE. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing Drs. Louis Hilliard (’04), Sally (’86), Steven Knox (’86) and Tanya Turner (’96)!

Fall CE 2015 Recap

We loved welcoming our alumni and friends back to campus for the fifth edition of the Fall CE Event Sept.

30-Oct. 4. It truly is a pleasure to see some of the profession’s most dynamic individuals from all around the world gather together on LIFE’s 110-acre oasis to not only learn, but also to be revitalized. One thing that makes LIFE’s Fall CE Event special is that attendees don’t just spend the weekend in the classrooms — there are a variety of parties, luncheons and reunions for everyone’s enjoyment.

»» Fall CE Party, themed “Gathering of Pirates,” was held in Socrates Café due to weather but was a huge success! More than $40,000 raised by the reunion years earmarked toward the William M. Annual Recognition Awards The International Alumni Association of Life University is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2015 Annual Recognition Awards. Through their professional accomplishments and personal service, eight honorees were selected as representatives of professional success, social contribution and cultural change.

These outstanding individuals were honored at the Lasting Purpose Recognition Lunch held during our 2015 Fall CE Event on Life University’s campus.

This year’s recipients are:

Danny Gambino, D.C. (’90) Distinguished Alumnus Award Honors a LIFE alumnus who has reached the pinnacle of success in his/her career and has brought credit to themselves and LIFE Dr. Danny Gambino has a history of “getting in the game” instead of watching from the sidelines. He is a team player who lives and breathes LIFE and the TIC. In addition to leading the profession at both the local and state level, Gambino has spearheaded efforts to grow LIFE while serving his San Diego community.

He is a founding member of Champions for Life, a nonprofit geared toward educating future chiropractors, and also the founder and host of the largest pre-chiropractic club in California. When he is not busy serving in various roles through the California Chiropractic Association, he is volunteering his time as a LIFEforce 1000 doctor and state representative for California. A true contributor to LIFE’s mission, Gambino is a man of influence for what LIFE represents.

Tara Layne, D.C. (’10) Young Alumna Award Honors a younger (graduated within the last 10 years) LIFE alumnus for his/her outstanding professional achievements Dr. Tara Layne is a rising star in chiropractic and exudes energy and charisma. An accomplished and wellknown chiropractor in Newberry, South Carolina, she devotes her time to her community while boasting LIFE to all her patients. Layne’s talents do not just help and heal human bodies, but also extend to the healing and care of four (and some two-legged) non-human companions. Along with regularly adjusting both bipedal and quadrupedal patients — including a pig name Petunia — she has been a member of the South Carolina Chiropractic Association since a student, and now serves on its Board of Directors. In addition to financially supporting LIFE and an array of local charities, Layne serves tirelessly as a LIFEforce 1000 doctor and a state representative for South Carolina.

Jay Handt, D.C. Honorary Alumnus Award Honors a non-LIFE alumnus who has demonstrated exceptional commitment and support for the mission and spirit of LIFE Dr. Jay Handt holds a special place in his heart for LIFE’s mission, vision and principles. Described by LIFE alumni as “all in,” he relentlessly gives hours

of time, talent and treasure back to the profession and the University. Not only does Handt serve on LIFE’s Board of Trustees, but he also is a LIFEforce 1000 doctor and 1974 President’s Circle contributor. He and his wife, Kathi, are familiar faces around campus, having attended almost every graduation banquet and ceremony and LIFE Leadership Weekend they can. His compelling feeling to make a difference and rock solid philosophy is why we are proud to claim him as one of our own.

Chiropractors with Compassion Donor Legacy Award Honors an individual, couple or family who has made a significant impact to the University through their financial contributions The generosity and commitment that Chiropractors with Compassion has shown to LIFE over the years exudes Lasting Purpose to the fullest. CWC, a movement dedicated to transforming the lives of children around the globe, is changing the world from the inside out. Together, LIFE and the CWC awarded a disbursable scholarship totaling more than $140,000 to a current student enrolled at LIFE.

Through their generous contributions, the CWC has eased the financial burden of a student’s education and will send off a vitalistic visionary into the world to spread LIFE’s message.

Amanda Hess, D.C. (’03) Volunteer Fundraiser Award Honors an individual who demonstrates exceptional leadership in raising money and organizing groups of volunteers for major fundraising projects that benefit LIFE Dr. Amanda Hess is transforming Life University, one gift at a time. She sees a need and acts quickly, while rallying an array of people to follow in her footsteps.

While both her and her husband, Jeremy Hess, D.C., have generously supported a variety of projects at LIFE, she has spearheaded the Philanthropy Committee through the IAALU Board of Directors. Through her humility, passion and knowledge, Hess has exceeded expectations and we applaud her giving spirit.

Jason Deitch, D.C. (’96) Lasting Purpose: To Love Award Honors an individual who exemplifies his/ her love and pride for LIFE Dr. Jason Deitch lives by the affirmation “if it is to be, it is up to we” and has spent the past two decades sharing the chiropractic message to the masses.

In just a short time, AmpLIFEied has become the profession’s number one resource center and has reached millions worldwide. This thought leader and communication strategist is doing his part to change the world while sharing LIFE’s message.

Stu Katzen, D.C. (’97) Lasting Purpose: To Serve Award Honors an individual who humbly supports and bolsters LIFE through their service There is no doubt that Dr. Stu Katzen is one of LIFE’s most humble servants.

He is persistently in the field attending events, spreading the word, recruiting students and giving back. Katzen lectures extensively in his community, as well as in local schools. In fact, he has become an annual lecturer for Temple University’s Department of Kinesiology. As an active LIFE alumnus, Katzen serves as vice president of the IAALU and LIFEforce 1000 doctor. He supports LIFE’s initiatives and seeks to create opportunities. As one of LIFE’s biggest fans, you can often spot Katzen wearing his LIFE gear with immense pride.

John Bennett, D.C. (’90) State Representative Award Honors a state representative who actively engages, educates and reconnects their state alumni and friends to LIFE LIFE’s State Representative program, which was founded in 2013, aims to reconnect local state alumni and friends to the University. Currently, the only representative in West Virginia, Dr. John Bennett selflessly serves the 200-plus alumni and friends living in the state.

Bennett faces each task with a sense of enthusiasm and purpose that is truly contagious. His personal commitment of time and resources has been instrumental in ensuring LIFE alumni and friends remain connected to the University no matter where they live. l

Seven Chiropractors Presented LIFEforce 1000 Awards Drs. Jay Handt, Kreg Huffer, Sandy and Adam Elbaum, and Cathy and Norm Colby were all presented with LIFEforce 1000 awards by Dr. Cierra Hoffman, director of LIFEforce 1000 at Life University, July 24 at the University’s LIFE Vision seminar.

Dr. Handt of New York City was awarded the Chiropractor of the Year Majestic Eagle Award, while Drs. Huffer, Sandy and Adam Elbaum, and Cathy and Norm Colby were all awarded the Majestic Eagle Service Award.

“All of these chiropractors have distinguished themselves by being

symbols of vision, leadership, bravery, courage, honor, pride, determination and grace,” Hoffman explains. “These chiropractors, like eagles, live in the heights of possibility. They set goals, discuss ideas, inspire others and press on toward greatness! When facing a storm, they utilize this power to propel themselves forward and upward to his next dream and possibility, while assisting others to do the same.”

The eagle says, “I will soar!” These attributes clearly describe each of these chiropractors, who serve their community and profession with grace and a deep commitment to make a difference in the world.

Hoffman also presented the LIFEforce 1000 2015 Global Advocate of the Year Award to Dr. Sebastian Bonnin during Fall CE 2015. “Dr. Bonnin is truly committed to the LIFEforce 1000 mission,” Hoffman says. “He has taken a leadership role in getting members involved, is altruistic in his contributions to the organization and demonstrates wonderful citizenship qualities.”

Fogarty Elected Chair of LIFE Board of Trustees

At the annual meeting of the Life University Board of Trustees in July, Dr. Kevin Fogarty was elected Board of Trustees Chairman.

Fogarty has been a member of the Board of Trustees for six years, currently serves as a post-graduate faculty member at the University, and he is also a member of LIFEforce 1000 and the President’s Circle.

“Dr. Fogarty is committed to Life U and our mission and vision,” says Life University President Dr. Guy Riekeman. “He will do an excellent job helping us move forward to achieve our strategic initiatives, all the while maintaining Life U’s reputation as the thought leader of vitalistic health care and education.”

“I’m deeply honored and privileged to be elected chairman of the Life University Board of Trustees,” Fogarty says. “I’m proud to be able to work side by side with Dr. Riekeman, and I feel that Life University has the potential to rock the world by changing the face of vitalistic health care for generations to come.”

Fogarty is the owner of The Fogarty Chiropractic Life Clinic in Rockledge, Florida, and serves as the chair of the Florida Board of Chiropractic. He has also received numerous awards for his service to the profession, including Florida Chiropractic Society’s Chiropractor of the Year in 2000, International Chiropractic Association Representative of the Year in 2010 and Florida Chiropractic Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Dedication and Service to the Chiropractic Profession in 2010. He is a 1985 graduate of the Palmer College of Chiropractic. l

»» Finished the year with revenues of $3.3 million less than budgeted and expenses $4 million less than budget, producing a net positive financial performance against budget. »» Tenth consecutive year that financial performance was better than budgeted. »» Received $88,000 contribution from Health Missions for Practice Based Research. »» Received $50,000 contribution from Joseph C. Paying it Forward

Dr. Amanda Apfelblat (’00) is a LIFE alumna dedicated to giving back — both to her alma mater and her community. Apfelblat is a member of the Life University President’s Circle and Realizing the Vision Campaign, supporting LIFE through generous financial contributions since graduating.

She runs a practice in Garden City, Michigan, where she focuses on pediatrics. In fact, she has a Diplomate in Pediatrics from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. While serving her community, Apfelblat also

sits on the board of both the Michigan Chiropractic Pediatric Association, of which she is a founding member, and the Michigan Association of Chiropractors.

She credits her time at LIFE to everything she has accomplished in her professional life. “I feel that I owe so much to LIFE,” Apfelblat says. “Everything that I have today is because I had the best education that allowed me to have a very successful practice.”

On why she prioritizes giving back to LIFE, Apfelblat brings up the University’s guiding principle of Lasting Purpose: To Give, To Do, To Love, To Serve—Out of a Sense of Abundance, saying, “I think that I’ve carried Lasting Purpose out in

my life since graduating,” she adds. “I just feel that it is very important to give back. LIFE produces the best adjusters in the world, and I think it is imperative to pay it forward so that legacy continues.”

Apfelblat also knows the importance of every LIFE alumni giving back to the school in some way. “LIFE gave us all the ability and the opportunity to go out into the world and be very successful,” she explains. “And that’s just one of many reasons why we should give back.”

Alumni Strategic Plan 2016-2018 The International Alumni Association at Life University works diligently to serve its alumni and friends, while simultaneously serving LIFE. The Association’s success is built not only on the hard work and dedication of thousands of LIFE’s alumni and friends, but through the vision and strategic planning process of its Board of Directors. In spring 2015, the Board met to lay a plan of what they hope to accomplish during the next three years through the IAALU. The 2016-2018 strategic plan was a direct result of their collaboration.

The plan is broken out into tree major strategies with underlying objectives, tactics and strategic metrics. For fiscal year 2016, the IAALU will focus on expanding the impact of the alumni board through committees. Each board member will lead a respective committee of alumni and friends to support their focused roles and goals.

Master’s/Undergraduate Committee Chaired by Delma De La Fuente (’13) This committee will serve as the voice and sounding board for both the students and alumni of the master’s and undergraduate programs at LIFE. State Rep Committee Chaired by Dr. Jeff Getbehead (’09) This committee will consist of regional coordinators focused on the growth and expansion of the State Rep program through monthly communication to current reps, in addition to recruitment of additional reps in vacant states.

Philanthropy Committee Chaired by Dr. Amanda Hess (’03) This committee will be the driving force of alumni committed to garnering support for the President’s Circle at LIFE. Committee members will provide volunteer support to advise and assist for seeking out new contributors and expanding the program’s reach.

Sports Committee Chaired by Dr. Stu Katzen (’97) This committee will seek to establish a group of “tailgaters” in cities frequently traveled by the LIFE Athletics Teams to aid in the promotion and attendance of athletic events.

Social Working and Activation Committee Chaired by Dr. Larry Marchese (’83) This committee will develop a social media and web presence to best promote LIFE’s initiatives and activities while spreading the vitalistic message to the masses.

Life University Dedicates Gross Anatomy Lab to

Dr. Roy W. Sweat A reception was held July 23 at Life University’s Center for Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in honor of Dr. Roy Sweat, who is a pioneer in the profession of Chiropractic and a longtime advocate for, and faculty member at, LIFE. He is the founder and developer of the Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic, which is the study of the spine with specific concentration on the first bone in the neck, the atlas vertebrae.

“Dr. Roy Sweat and his family have brought one of the most important bits of information about the spine and nerve system to the profession,” says Life University President Dr. Guy Riekeman, who also notes that Sweat is his personal chiropractor. “The AO work that they’ve developed and the research they are doing with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and vertebral arteries is endless. It couldn’t be more perfect than being able to dedicate the Gross Anatomy lab to Dr. Sweat.”

“It’s a great honor for me, and I appreciate the Life University Board and President Dr. Guy Riekeman,” notes Dr. Sweat on the special occasion.

Sweat graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in December of 1949 before starting to practice in 1950. He has been practicing the profession he loves ever since. He created the Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic Program in 1980, which taught instrument adjustment only. AO Chiropractic utilizes a precise, repeatable, X-ray-analyzed chiropractic program to adjust the Atlas vertebrae by a percussive force Instrument. In doing so, the doctors remove nerve interference. “D.D. Palmer and B.J. Palmer had some great miracle patients,” Sweat explains. “Our generation wants the miracle patients, but we want to know how those miracles happen.”

Life University Board of Trustee member Dr. Eddy Diaz, who graduated from LIFE in 1995, remembers Sweat from his days as a student, and especially a key lesson he learned from him: “I learned that everyone needs a chiropractic examination in their life, but the timing and specificity of adjustments is what will give us the power that we are looking for when working with patients.” l

LIFE and CLA Partners in Education

On Aug. 28, Dr. Guy Riekeman met with Dr. David Fletcher to recognize the educational partnership between Life University and the Chiropractic Leadership Alliance, which recently donated equipment known as Insight Subluxation Stations to supplement LIFE’s chiropractic curriculum.

The Insight Subluxation Station tracks thermal activity, spinal movement, stress and activity in the autonomic nervous system, creating an image of what’s occurring in the nervous system and spine. Fletcher, chairman and Chief Clinical Officer of CLA, says, “It’s a validated, reliable research-grade piece of technology that any chiropractor can use.” It takes eight minutes to run a complete test, offering a valuable digital picture of nervous system health.

“The Life University College of Chiropractic appreciates the donation from Dr. Fletcher,” says Dr. Leslie King, Dean of LIFE’s College of Chiropractic.

“The Insight Subluxation Stations are an asset to teaching patient care and will help to continue to give our students the tools and knowledge they need to take care of the spine and nervous system.”

LIFE previously had four Insight Subluxation Stations that were no longer functional to the program. Due to discussions between Dr. Riekeman, LIFE faculty member Dr. Susan Eposito and CLA representatives Fletcher, Brock Brascho (vice president of CLA) and Debra Cassera (CEO of CLA), CLA donated nine

Insight Subluxation Stations, a total in-kind donation of more than $70,000.

“We love the fact that the students will have the stations in an integrated fashion throughout their education, from being taught in early days as an introduction, then into student clinic and moving into outpatient clinic,” says Fletcher.

Life University appreciates CLA’s contribution and leadership in the field of Chiropractic and knows its students will benefit with the leading-edge technology of the Insight Subluxation Stations. l

Importance of Athletes Having a Baseline Test

Concussion is a hot topic in the news today.

can affect the outcome of a test. All of this data must be taken into account when comparing the athlete’s post-injury score of concussion testing. Using all of this data with a comprehensive testing procedure can ensure that you have a test that will properly evaluate your injury. Having this data is necessary, as we are beginning to see the real effects that a concussion can have on your quality of life as you get older.

At the NeuroLIFE Institute, we deal with patients who suffer from the effects of concussions regularly. We strongly recommend every person receive a baseline test; it’s a 15- to 20-minute battery of tests that allows us to give you a virtual start-and-finish line. We utilize C3 Logix, a state-of-the-art program designed by researchers affiliated with the Cleveland Concussion Center, a world-renowned facility in the concussion arena. We are beginning to see the long-term effects that concussion can have on athletes and military personnel. Severe depression, suicides and chronic traumatic encephalopathy are just some of the severe consequences being linked to repetitive concussions as the athlete ages. While it is the NFL, NHL and contact sports that present the greatest risk, all athletes are at risk for concussion. You do not have to go head-to-head with someone to sustain a concussion. You don’t even have to hit your head at all. Also, another misconception about concussion is that you have to be “knocked out” to have a traumatic brain injury; this is false. A variety of symptoms and scenarios are possible when you have had a concussion.

No two individual’s brains are completely alike, and no two people have the exact same symptoms to a concussion or traumatic brain injury. That is why is it so important for every athlete to have a high quality baseline test done. When having a baseline test done, it is important that the test be thorough and encompass as many domains of brain and nerve system health as possible. A baseline test will tell you what ‘your normal’ is. Having a specific set of data for each athlete will If you have not yet had a then allow for a better evaluation of that baseline test that assesses your athlete in regard to what the effect of any future injury is, as well as when it is safe for balance, vision and cognition, them to return to play.

Time to Dust Off Your Golf Clubs and Support LIFE! We are pleased to announce that the 3rd Annual Running Eagles Scramble for LIFE golf tournament will be held on Friday, April 22 at The City Club Marietta. The tournament is presented this year by Maximized Living, and the format is a four-player scramble (best ball). Proceeds from the event will benefit the General Athletic Fund at Life University. Plan to arrive at 1 p.m. for registration, a box lunch and free range balls. The shotgun start begins at 2 p.m. and will be followed by drinks on the veranda overlooking the golf course at the Hilton Atlanta Marietta Hotel & Conference Center next door to the golf course. A dinner buffet will be served to all participants, along with awards, raffles and a silent auction at 6:30 p.m.

Included in the cost of your golf is a four-hour CE course taught the following morning on LIFE’s campus and tickets to a rugby match after (CEUs approved for Georgia and Florida, inquire for other states). The cost is $175 per golfer or $700 per team. The Hilton Atlanta Marietta Hotel & Conference Center is offering a special rate of $99 to event attendees.

Not a golfer? You can still partake in the fun by joining us for the post-tournament drinks, dinner and silent auction for $50. You may also purchase the dinner, CE course and rugby for $100, or just take the CE course and attend the rugby match Saturday for $75.

Keep in Touch with 1980s Dr. Steve Koc (’80), known as Akal Singh Khalsa while a LIFE student, won the Best Animated Film award at the 2015 Northwest Comic Fest for his project, Gnomies World. Koc’s first film is a humorous, stopmotion extravaganza filmed in the deep woods near Portland, Oregon. Reminiscent of animation from the 1960s, he combines surprising cinematography, unique natural settings, original music and endearing characters that appeal to all ages. The film can be viewed at gnomiesworld.com.

Dr. Vincent Peri (’81) recently published a new book, “The Healing Space: Understand the True Nature of Inner Healing,” which will be a featured essay on The Coaching Tools Company website for its 10,000-member viewing in the near future. The essay is written for practitioners and laypersons who are interested in helping anyone suffering from grief and illness. Pictured is Peri with his grandson Nolan.

Dr. Martin Rosen’s (’81) newest release is a pediatric chiropractic manual titled “Pediatric Chiropractic Care,” which can be purchased at drmartinrosen.com. Rosen has practiced in Wellesley, Massachusetts, as a family pediatric chiropractor since 1982. He has taught pediatrics, carniopathy, SOT, practice management and chiropractic philosophy nationally and internationally to thousands of chiropractors and chiropractic students.

Graduates Dr. Dale Francisco Williams (’85) recently moved from Roxboro, North Carolina, to her hometown of Nathalie, Virginia. She is excited to come full circle and bring the highest quality of standards of care possible.

Williams is married to Ray, and together they have one son, Trey, and two grandchildren, Caroline and Frank “Quade” Williams IV. Dr. Gary Lett (’86) serves as the team chiropractor for the University of Southern Mississippi. He has participated in organized sports from childhood through his collegiate career, including golf and football. Since moving to Hattiesburg and establishing his practice in 1988, he has been involved in various local civic organizations and sports programs.

Dr. Susan Blaskay (’88) and husband, Bill DeYonker, returned to campus the end of August for a tour. Blaskay maintains a private practice in Livonia, Michigan, and hadn’t been back to LIFE in more than 15 years. So great having her back!

Dr. Craig York (’89) has successfully completed a Diplomate in Chiropractic Craniocervical Junction Procedures through the International Chiropractic Association Council on Upper Cervical Care and has published, Carniocervical procedures — a précis of upper cervical chiropractic with Drs. Charles Woodfield III, Roderic Rochester, Scott Bales, Mychal Beebe, Bryan Salminen and Jeff Scholten.

Dr. Jim Louro (’89) helped Tampa Bay tight end Tim Wright create a Friday Night Lights football camp to connect NFL players to their local community.

Louro, who has been the president of the Wall Youth Football for the past 19 years, established the foundation with Wright and close friend, Larry Marshall, in his home two years ago.

The camp seeks to foster children and bridge the gap between academics, athletics and quality of life by providing resources and opportunities for success in the real world.

Dr. F. Sophia Myers (’97) was the winner of a customized drop table courtesy of Sun Chiropractic Tables and LIFE alumnus Dr. Dennis Ostrowski (’92). Myers is the owner of Care Chiropractic & Acupuncture in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has practiced for 17 years.

She utilizes spinal adjustments, acupuncture and nutritional counseling to help her patients reach their health goals. Myers is also the developer of the Myers Method of Weight Loss, a painless non-needle acupuncture program.

Dr. Danny Gambino (’90) again was named California Chiropractic Association Doctor of the Year at the 2015 CCA Annual Convention & Marketplace in San Diego; a feat unprecedented by any other member of the association. Gambino, based in San Diego, serves as membership chair for CCA. He is also a past recipient of the CCA Distinguished Service Award. Gambino credits his accomplishments to the love and support of his colleagues and friends, especially his wife of 24 years and fellow LIFE alumna, Dr. Kim Gambino (’91).

Dr. Jeff Bos (’92) was installed as the new president of the Florida Chiropractic Association during its national convention in August. Bos is an Orlando, Florida, native who has served central Florida since 1992.

Congratulations, Dr. Bos! Dr. Stephen Welsh (’96) received the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from the International Chiropractic Association Meeting in May. He was elected the secretary/treasurer of the ICA in 2009 and served in that position until 2013.

He was also named the ICA Chiropractor of the Year in 2011. Welsh is a chiropractic warrior and this is an honor welldeserved.

The Georgia Chiropractic Council selected Marietta chiropractor, Dr. Tim Langley (’99), as their 2015 Chiropractor of the Year, and he has been inducted into the GCC Hall of Fame. Langley is a Founder’s Circle Member of the GCC, serves on its Board of Directors, chairs its Publications Committee and serves on its Legislative Committee. In addition to his many roles with the GCC, Langley is a very active in his community and a Vietnam-era veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He maintains a private practice in Marietta and has two children, Christopher and Megan.

Dr. Marc Rogers (’99) has been honored as the first staff chiropractor for the free chiropractic clinic in Clearwater, Florida.

Established in 1977, the clinic provides necessary medical care to local residences who cannot afford health care. Rogers sees patients every other Tuesday and educates them about Chiropractic and healthy lifestyle choices. Rogers is active with the Florida Chiropractic Association and is the past president of the Pinellas County Chiropractic Society. He maintains a very busy practice in Largo, where he lives with his wife, Sharon, and two daughters, Sidney and Brooke.

Dr. Heather Rassel (’00) was a participant in the 2014 SwingSwift and the Stars, a dance-off for charity, in Grand Traverse, Michigan.

Rassel and her dance partner, Cliff Shanoski, finished in second place in both the dance and fundraising portions of the charity dance-off. Together, they helped raise more than $52,000 for Marisposa Pathway, a nonprofit that empowers young women at risk.

The South Carolina Chiropractic Association honored Dr. Tara Layne (’10), a South Carolina state rep, with the 2015 Young Chiropractor of the Year at its annual conference in Myrtle Beach in June. The award is presented each year to a young doctor who is a rising star in the profession and exudes energy and charisma in their daily profession. Layne is a first-generation chiropractor. She completed her CVCP Certification using Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation and maintains her private practice in Newberry.

We loved welcoming Dr. Ronny Bergman (’01) back to LIFE’s campus in August!

Bergman, a 100 Year Lifestyle chiropractor in Port Washington, New York, loved seeing first-hand how LIFE has grown into a world-class institution. He is picture here in front of LIFE’s Safety Pin, a daily reminder of how all of the systems of the body and the environment work.

Dr. Robert Arnone (’02), a Missouri state rep, recently made an instructional video about a brand new spinal traction/disc decompression technique made possible with the use of a CUBOID. Pictured is Arnone using CUBOID to stretch the back muscles and decompress the discs prior to adjustments.

Dr. Ron Swain (’05) welcomed twin boys, Andrew Robert and Philip Edward, into the world Aug. 12 at 10:10 and 10:47 a.m., respectively. Mom, dad and boys are doing well!

Dr. Brian Mabry (’10) welcomed Graham Jacob into the world Aug. 10 at 1:05 a.m. at home.

Both dad and mom are in love!

Dr. Jeannine Rummel (’11), a South Carolina state rep, was elected to serve on the South Carolina Chiropractic Association Board of Directors as a 2015-16 District Two director. Since 2001, she has lived in Myrtle Beach, where she is spreading the message of chiropractic at 360 Health Care. Rummel enjoys an active lifestyle and participates in marathons and holds a red belt in Soo Bahk Do. Dr. Chashaun Matthews (’12) is among 36 people selected for a Woodrow Wilson Georgia Teaching Fellow appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal. The highly competitive program recruits both recent graduates and career changers with strong backgrounds in science, technology, engineering and math, and it prepares them specifically to teach in high-need secondary schools.

Dr. Shane Vincent (’12) and his wife, Leesha, welcomed their first son, Knox Thomas, Dec. 12, 2014. He weighed 9 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 22.5 inches long.

FRIENDS WE’VE LOST Dr. Kay R. Bowsher (’81) passed away June 15 at her home in Toledo, Ohio.

She had practices in Lima, Toledo and Findlay. Her hobbies were making Christmas decorations for family and friends; traveling around the U.S. and Europe; genealogy; and serving as family historian. She is survived by her brother, four nieces and nephews, and six great nieces and nephews.

Dr. Laverle Eugene Breshears (’80) passed away July 21. He opened his chiropractic practice in Boise, Idaho, in 1981, where he cared for countless patients. In his spare time, he loved skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, jet skiing, golfing and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Becky; two children, Korey and Brandi; and his parents, Neal and Erla. His wonderful spirit, enduring joy and incredible talents were celebrated July 24.

Dr. David William Vernon (’95) passed away May 10. He is survived by his girlfriend of almost 17 years, Renae Glass, a pitbull named Scrappy, a tabby cat named Schnockles and host of a other critters, friends and family through the country.

Dr. Gregory Wayne Chinn (’89) passed away Aug. 23. He is survived by two sons, Geoffrey, 29 and Jonathan, 26. A celebration of his LIFE took place Sept. 13, in Lynwood, Washington, as family and friends gathered to appreciate his beautiful soul.

Dr. Steven Allen Jones (’01) passed away May 31 in West Columbia, South Carolina. He was a dedicated chiropractor who worked under his father, Dr. Kenneth Jones, until he opened Chiropractic Lifestyles in 1991. For 24 years, Steve served his community with dedication and compassion. He is survived by his wife, Janice; children, Kinsi and Christopher Near, Mercedes and Austin Stone, Zack and Tiffany Swygert, and Rex Swygert; and granddaughters, Lucy, Maggie and Leah.
