What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess and why?
Lt Col Lori Carver Commander, 42d Operational Medical Rediness Squadron Every leader should possess a caring heart for those entrusted to them. Caring encompasses compassion, empathy, accountability, training, recognition and mentorship. Our people are the most important ingredient to our mission success. They must know they are cared for and leaders need to show this in their daily interactions with those they lead. It is a leaders responsibility to care for their staff and ensure each person has an opportunity to excel.
Lt Col Kevin Gray Chief, Medical Staff I believe leaders should possess a passion for serving. A leader is worth following when they sacrifice their time and talents in the service of others. This servant heart sets the example for others to emulate.

Lt Col Hiram Ortiz
Lt Col Melissa Runge
Chief Nurse, 42d Medical Group
Commander, 42d Medical Support Squadron
Commander, Health Care Operations Squadron
I believe every leader should have a passion for leading. Passionate leaders lead with their heart and soul! They have a clarity of vision, and are committed to not only achieving organizational goals, but also helping individuals within the organization to attain their goals. Passionate leaders have a profound understanding of people, and they are outstanding communicators. They are compassionate, and believe in themselves and others. A passionate leader is fueled by positive energy, and they view adversity as an opportunity to learn and grow. Passionate leaders demonstrate their ability to motivate, inspire, and persevere every day, and are a fundamental part of all successful leadership teams. I strive each and every day to lead with passion and purpose!
Every leader should be able to effectively listen. Without this skill, leadership decisions lack a well-informed base of information necessary for decision making. Let’s also define what active listening is. It is displaying the right mannerisms that invite open communication, it means paying attention to the words being communicated to you, it means being attentive to the communicators body language – it simply means being present. Based on my experiences, a lack of active listening on the part of leaders has the incredible ability to degrade a team’s effectiveness. The great news is that this is a skill we can all do and always work to improve.
A leader is tasked with b ringing together a diverse group of individuals and guiding them towards accomplishing a common goal. Therefore, a leader must possess the ability to recognize and further develop the strengths of the individuals on the team. The individual abilities of each member, combined, will be synergistic, allowing the team to gain further ground than the original goal at hand. I don’t think this is an easy task, nor do I think it comes naturally. This is a characteristic leaders continuously develop with each new team and mission that leads to success.

Among some of the qualities we often think as essential for our leaders are wisdom, empathy, patience, and integrity. One quality sometimes overlooked is perseverance. Our leaders must persevere in their pursuit of knowledge. They must persevere in their efforts to be empathetic and patient. They must persevere in upholding integrity. Above all, in all things, leaders must persevere.
Every leader should possess kindness. By being kind you gain the trust of those around you. They know you care and are more open to approach you with questions and concerns. Gen Colin Powell states, “The day the soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership."
42D Medical Group
Col Zoya Lee-Zerkel Commander, 42d Medical Group
The work of the 42 MDG and all essential employees is critical in helping Maxwell and Gunter get the resources needed to maintain a safe and healthy community. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for all they have done and continue to do to help keep us safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also want to thank the friends and families of these heroes. We know you bear a significant burden as your loved ones work to protect us. Thank you for supporting and encouraging them through these challenging times. Stay safe and thanks for “having our 6.”
Leadership is all about the team - no one person can steer a course for an organization effectively without a concerted group effort. In the Air Force, we have finely honed organizational structures that lends itself to this concept at every level. What we then need to do as leaders, is to grow and develop our Airmen and truly build a bench with depth and breadth for the organization to thrive then step back and watch them shine. “Leadership consists of nothing but taking responsibility for everything that goes wrong and giving your subordinates credit for everything that goes well.” Dwight D. Eisenhower

How to Protect Yourself and Others Know how it spreads • There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). • The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. • The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. » Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). » Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. » These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. » Some recent studies have suggested that COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.
Everyone should Clean your hands often • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid close contact • Stay home if you are sick. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Put distance between yourself and other people. » Remember that some people without symptoms may be able to spread virus. » This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick. www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/peopleat-higher-risk.html
cdc.gov/coronavirus CS 316291A 05/05/2020
Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others • You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick. • Everyone should wear a cloth face cover when they have to go out in public, for example to the grocery store or to pick up other necessities. » Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. • The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected. • Do NOT use a facemask meant for a healthcare worker. • Continue to keep about 6 feet between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.
Cover coughs and sneezes • If you are in a private setting and do not have on your cloth face covering, remember to always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow. • Throw used tissues in the trash. • Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
Clean and disinfect • Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks. www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/ disinfecting-your-home.html • If surfaces are dirty, clean them: Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection. • Then, use a household disinfectant. You can see a list of EPA-registered household disinfectants here.

SAFETY TIPS & REMINDERS Hydrate Warmer weather means you sweat more and that means your body is losing water faster. The longer you’re outside working or playing, the more likely your health can decline. Even if you are at the pool, be sure to stay hydrated with drinks. It’s amazing what a glass of water can protect you from during the summer!
Weather Shade, fans, air conditioning and large cloud are going to be your best friends when that humidity rolls in. If you’re unused to the Alabama’s weather, make sure you are taking frequent breaks and staying safe.
Environment If you plan on attending local activities, be courteous of the area around you. Make sure you have a license when going fishing, a life vest when going boating, or you have bug spray when going camping. If you have young kids, avoid hot playground equipment by going out in the early morning or later in the evening.
Pets Remember that animals can’t take off their coats as we can! Help your pets out by trimming back thick pelts, avoiding hot asphalt when walking them, and keeping fleas or ticks off them.
Travel Travel is a big part of summer vacation, but remember to do so safety! Remember proper COVID-19 safety procedures and check in with the base guidelines on travel restrictions before you make any solid vacation plans!
