What has been your favorite aspect of being a 42 MSG Squadron Commander?
What has been your favorite aspect of being the 42 MSG Commander? "It just wouldn't be without MSG!" Each of those capital letters has been my favorite aspect of the 42 MSG.
42d Mission Support Group Col Scott A. Bryant What would you like to say to Airmen of Maxwell-Gunter and their families? First, thank you for welcoming my entire family to the Maxwell-Gunter community. We are thoroughly enjoying calling the River Region our home. As we start this new year, I would call for a renewed dedication to investing our time and talents into our Maxwell-Gunter and River Region community. Let us all be the neighbor that extends kindness through words and actions. I would also encourage folks to ask themselves what are their favorite aspects about what they do here at MaxwellGunter? What’s your mission and purpose for being here? Who and how do you provide and receive support? How can that support be better? Who’s the group or team around you that gets you excited and makes you proud to be a part of? What can you do to strengthen the team? Wishing you all a terrific start to this new year and decade!

(1) MISSION: This is my first assignment within AETC and I daily see the value in the services we provide through the mission of Air University. One aspect I enjoy sharing with first-time visitors is that throughout every Airman's career they will somehow be impacted either through physical location or virtual activity with Air University. There is no other mission in the Air Force quite like the one we get to support. (2) SUPPORT: The support I have seen happening at this installation is top-notch. I see squadron supporting squadron but most importantly I see people supporting people. As for being supported in the position, I couldn’t have been surrounded by a better team of caring and talented Squadron Commanders and deputies; a Group Deputy, Ms. Christine Prewitt, who we all lean on and learn from and who I truly admire; an incredible front office exec team Capt Alex Churnside (recently PCS’d), Capt Lindsay Mortensen, and Ms. Hanh Stewart) helps keep us welloiled, on task, and on target. I would like to thank the following teammates for their support…Ms. Lela McCoy, for her 20 years of service and support as the MSG secretary; SMSgt Quinley, for his unyielding and invaluable support as First Sergeant for the Group and Wing Staff agencies; and Chief Terrance Boyd (from the CCAF team) and his wife, Tanya, for their support, friendship, and his continued counsel in service as Group Superintendent for the last six months. Wishing you all the best in your new positions! We look forward to welcoming our new Group Superintendent, Chief Patrick Key and his wife, Torsha, to Team 42 who will be joining us from Yokota AB in our mission to support the Airmen of Maxwell and Gunter. (3) GROUP: And of course, one of the very best aspects of the job is…the group itself, this diverse team of 7 squadrons, comprised of approx 2,000 Airman (Active Duty, Guard, Reserves, Civilians, Contractors) from all over with all sorts of experiences and backgrounds who are working together as a group delivering excellence. I am so proud to represent and serve the entire MSG team. These are the people and aspects of a dream job that get me excited about getting up every morning!
42d Civil Engineer Squadron: Mr. Gregory E. Rollins My favorite aspect is the affiliation with the Air Force and all its GREAT people. Returning to the AF after 4 years outside the Dept of Defense helped me to realize that the military and civilian Airmen that I worked with, in my 22 years active duty and 5 years as a civilian Airman, are the Best in the World! I’ve had the honor to serve as a Squadron Commander, Deployed Group Commander and now as a Squadron Civilian Director, and one of the constants throughout these positions were the great people I had the opportunity to lead! 42d Contracting Squadron: Lt Col Matthew A. Fahrner In reflecting back on the 2.5 years I’ve been a commander, the best part is concurrently partnering with fellow Squadron Commanders to get the mission done, but also at the same time working together with those same Squadron Commanders to take care of Airmen. You help each other in a collaborative spirit of teamwork, and so much (more) gets done, both for the mission and Airmen, which makes the job incredibly rewarding, too.

42d Logistics Readiness Squadron: Lt Col Juan R. Matias As a commander, there is no greater joy than seeing the Airmen fulfill their potential... lives saved, CDCs finished, conquered PT tests, ALS awards, mission execution, among many other achievements! Like DNA, each Airman is unique, and we must evolve to mentor, equip and empower this eneration so they can take care of the next.

Amy Brightbill 42d Operations Support Squadron: Lt Col Daniel E. Mendoza As a kid of immigrant parents growing up in Miami who did not pick up English until the 2nd grade, getting to be a Squadron Commander has been a dream come true for me. My favorite aspect of serving as a commander has always been being in a position to be able to work with amazing people from different backgrounds to take care of our Airmen and the mission. Along with an engaged and supportive River Region community, you truly have the best “Hometown” in the Air Force.

42d Security Forces Squadron: Maj Lee E. Anderson The people…there isn’t even a close second. Every day I get to work with some of the best people America has to offer. From my Defenders, to my fellow commanders, community partners and everyone else in between, the people make Maxwell AFB special. I consider myself blessed every single day to be fortunate enough to command a squadron here at Maxwell AFB.
1st Lt Kennisa Rafanan-Reynolds
MArketing TEam Marketing Director
42d Communications Squadron: Maj Molly E. Braun My favorite aspect of being a commander at Maxwell is the Team 4-2 community. It is truly an honor to partner with teammates who work so hard support one another in order to get the mission done. The trust built up and down the chain of command allows for great flexibility and accepting risk at the right level, which directly results in taking care of Airmen and their families. I can’t imagine a better place or team and am especially grateful for the 42 ABW family.

Claudia Parson 42d Force Support Squadron: Maj AnnaBelle S. Hill Hands down, my favorite part has been the people. I have had the privilege to lead one of the most diverse and dynamic teams of hardworking people. Seeing them take care of Airmen and their families everyday reminds me why I wear this uniform and motivates me to be a better leader.

BECOME A MEMBER AT THE YOUTH CENTERS
Youth Spotlight At 14, Jasmine Myers is a prime example of an outstanding youth member. She has a beautiful connection with the other kids at the Maxwell Youth Center, and they run to hug her the moment she comes into view. She's shown dedication in sports, academics, and passion as a caretaker. It's her position as an inspirational figure to the other kids that has led her to find new ways of helping them learn. Over the course of the summer, Jasmine has worked hard to publish a new book titled The What If Alphabet Book filled with her illustrations of fictional scenarios. Each page is covered in hand-drawn art to help toddlers and kindergarten-aged children learn their ABC's in a fun and colorful way. She hopes to enhance the way children learn and allow them to expand their imagination. Jasmine has been encouraged by her mother, who also enjoys writing.
12 | February-March 2020
JASMINE MYERS
With her mother's support, Jasmine has overcome the challenges of ensuring that every page of her book is unique and creative. And now that her work is available to the world, her next goal is to challenge herself to write a more engaging book, moving from young children to teens. “I've known Jasmine for around four years, and I've got to see her transition from a normal, everyday kid into a leader who does everything through her actions instead of just words. When someone is moving to the base and wants someone to reach out to, she's the first one I think of to help them. Jasmine is a great kid that will show you the ropes and lead through example. She's a great motivator and self-starter who always figures out a way to get things done.” Robert Richert - Youth Director
Want to know a secret? It pays to be a Youth Program member! You'll have access to everything we offer like a full-court gymnasium, video game television area, game room, teen room, and study area. Is Your Child Being Educated in Unchanging Truths?
Eastwood Christian School Educating For Liberty
"My seven years at Eastwood laid a solid foundation of faith, discipline, and dedication that have constantly helped me throughout my time at the Naval Academy."
True education recognizes that only when a man is self-governed will he ever be free. It seeks to educate humans to be free because it trains them to be virtuous and recognizes that if liberty is to exist, it must be defended. Eastwood Christian School offers a Classical Christian education that trains students to analyze and appreciate the ideas that have led to free societies. We help them to understand the ideas that lead to tyranny and encourage them to be warriors for the truth. We have equipped many of our students for successful careers in the military, not because we train good soldiers, but because we train virtuous human beings who are ready to face the challenges of the world."

FITNESS TIPS Keep Your Resolutions Realistic Goals No two people are the same, so why should your goals be the same as someone else? Find where you're at, learn where you want to go, and make it manageable within your schedule.
Start Small You're not going to lose 50 pounds in a week, so start with smaller goals. Give your muscles time to build; then, next time, you can lift more, run farther, and be active longer.
Consistency Maintain the right energy level and don't burn out trying to become Superman in the first few weeks. The right plan doesn't start with tiring yourself every day, but rather with learning a pace that works for you.

HOW DO I GET ACCESS?
Upon the first visit to the installation, eligible veterans and caregivers mustpresent their required documentation at the visitor control center. Security will verify your identity and purpose of visit, then run an on-the-spot background check as they do for all individuals seeking access to DoD installations. If you pass the background check and the installation has credential enrollment capabilities, your acceptable credential maybe enrolled for recurring access eliminating the need to stop at the visitor control center upon each visit.
WHERE CAN I SHOP?
These veterans and caregivers will be able to access: • Commissaries* • Military Service Exchanges • Golf Courses
• Bowling Centers • Recreational Lodging • RV Campgrounds
*DoD is required to charge a small fee to new users whoare eligible solely under the Purple Heart and DisabledVeterans Equal Access Act of 2018, to cover any increase incosts to the U.S. Treasury for processing commercial credit.
CAN SPOUSES OR DEPENDENTS SHOP?
While spouses and dependents are not eligible for this benefit, or to make purchases, they may accompany the eligible veteran or caregiver as a guest. For installation access purposes, guests must present an acceptable credential as proof of identity and pass a basic on-the spot background check. 26 | February-March 2020
WHO IS ELIGIBLE? The Department of Defense is proud to expand commissary, exchange, and morale, welfare and recreation retail eligibility to:
WELCOME HOME VETERANS PATRONAGE EXPANSION FOR CERTAIN VETERANS AND CERTAIN CAREGIVERS
• Veterans awarded a Purple Heart • Veterans who are former prisoners of war • All veterans with a service-connected disability • Individuals assessed, approved, and designated as the primary family caregiver of eligible veterans under the Department of Veteran Affairs Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
Veterans will need a Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) that displays “PURPLE HEART,” “FORMER POW,” or “SERVICE CONNECTED” below the photo on the front of the card for installation and benefit access. Veterans who have a zero percent service connected disability rating and exceed the VA income threshold, and have beenplaced in VA Priority Group 8E, may use the Health Eligibility Center (HEC) Form H623A paired with an acceptable identification credential* for installationand benefit access. Primary Family Caregivers will receive an official letter from the VA Office of Community Care that indicates eligibility for DoD privileges paired with an acceptable credential* (e.g. REAL ID compliant driver’s license) for installation and benefit access. www.LifeAtTheMax.us | 27
