COVER STORY We've played in the pool, we've done our summer vacations, and now it's time to hit the ground running towards our new school year! It's time to schedule your next lesson, pick your favorite electives, and get ready to make friends in all new classes. Grab your backpack, grab your lunch boxes, and get your school supplies in order. Special thank you to our cover photo parents, Christopher and Ronica, and their beautiful children, Christopher II and Kristina Grant for showing us your excitement for the new school year!

The Grant family is already preparing for school by getting their beautiful kids ready. They already know one of the best ways to do this is right here with the Force Support Squadron. We're celebrating by hosting back to school events all around the base. We've got parties at the Youth Centers, giveaway prizes at Bowling and the Maxwell Club, and more! Keep an eye out and see what sort of events we have going on for this quarter.

thoughts 42 FSS COMMANDER'S

Lt Col Michelle P. Richards

Hello, new residents to Maxwell-Gunter and farewell to our military members and families that have recently departed. Our Maxwell Force Support Squadron is here to ensure you have every opportunity to live your Life at the Max. If you are new to the area be sure to follow us on Facebook, sign up for text messages, sign up for our weekly newsletter, and visit us at www.lifeatthemax.us for additional information and references. We have programs and services at Maxwell, Gunter, Lake Martin, and Midbay Shores and look forward to your visit. The 42 FSS has an exciting quarter for you. We start the quarter out with a Luau at the base pool in July for that last “Aloha” style summer bash. August launches with a “Back to School” fair for your children at the Maxwell Club. For those starting classes at Air University, if you’re lucky maybe your kids will share their school supplies with you. In September, the weather will be cooler and just in time for a base-wide picnic at Maxwell’s Air Park. It’s a wonderful way to mingle and connect in the home of “Airpower.” We end the quarter with a Mike Super show, an amazing magician and illusionist featured on America’s Got Talent and NBC’s show Phenomenon. When he visited Maxwell AFB in 2017 we had over 800+ attendees. Get there early for the best seat. This is a show you do not want to miss. This edition of the magazine brings me to the end of my command tour. My family and I want to thank you. Thank you for being incredible customers and assisting us in creating a community that really does feel like home. Additionally, special thanks to all of our commercial sponsors who assist the 42 FSS in enhancing services for you and your families. Sponsor support helps make many of the events you attend free of charge. Lastly, a heartfelt thanks to the men and women of the 42 FSS. It has been an honor and a privilege to command this unit. Your passion, commitment, and excellence in delivering readiness and resiliency programs for our military members and their families are the finest I’ve ever seen. The Richards family will miss you all! Maj Annabelle Hill will officially take the guidon on 10 July. If you are around that day at 1000, please come by the Maxwell Club and welcome her. She hails from Kadena (our Lemay competitor from last year) one of the largest FSSs in the Air Force and is excited to join the “Unleash the Force” team. This brings an end to my journey. Maxwell is home of the Air Force, so I have no doubt I’ll be back soon to visit. For now, the Richards family gets ready to go to Disney thanks to our ITT folks. They just happen to be hosting two lunch and learns in July/August if you need assistance for park planning. Best wishes to you all…till we meet again!

FEDERAL IMPACT AID Public schools everywhere are in constant need of assistance in finding resources for their student body in terms of affording classroom assistance or supplies. A Federal funding opportunity called Impact Aid is designed to assist local school districts that have a loss of tax revenue due to the enrollment of students from families who live or work on tax-exempt Federal properties; such as military installations. Because of the loss of tax revenue, schools districts find it difficult to allocate funding where it’s most needed. Impact Aid funds become a part of the school system’s general operating budget and can be used to support the cost of teacher salaries, classroom equipment, and other enrichment programs.

To receive Impact Aid, school districts must collect information on the number of federally connected children enrolled in its schools by way of a survey. Each year, parents are asked to complete this survey for each child enrolled in one of our local schools. The process is quite easy and only takes a few minutes to complete. So if you live or work on federal property and you have kids enrolled in school this year, all you need to do is simply complete the survey and return it to your child’s school. All of your responses are treated as confidential and will only be used for the purpose of the Federal Aid Program.

Don't miss out on your chance to give back to our local schools and our kids!

YOUTH OF THE YEAR Zoey Moore

Once a year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America seek out the one kid that has gone above and beyond in their district. Who stands out as a leader and isn't afraid to go the extra step to make their area better? Well, this year they looked far and wide and found Zoey Moore from Lamp High School. At only 15 years old, Zoey was chosen to represent Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex at the State Alabama Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year Competition. Her quick intellect and self-driven attitude led her to be an inspiring leader to her peers. She hopes to one day become a reputable pianist and successful music producer, and that starts with her tentative school: Juilliard! Help us congratulate Zoey on being this year's Youth of the Year for Maxwell and Gunter!

Welcome NEWCOMERS

42 FSS DEPUTY: MARK WILKE

For every great leader, there is a second person right there to help support and guide them. We would like to welcome our newest addtion to the FSS leadership team: Mark Wilke! Mark has been serving the Air Force in various capacities for over 36 years. He served 21 years on active duty as a communicator and rounded off his active duty career as a Command Chief at Eglin AFB, Al Udeid AB, and Scott AFB. He has been all over the world and served in PACAF, USAFE, AMC, NATO, ACC and the Air Force Weather Agency. But when he left Active Duty, he never left the Air Force. He returned as a DoD defense contractor and transitioned into civil service where he worked in Force Development, Airman and Family Readiness, and Child & Youth Services. Mark graduated from ACSC in June and was selected to serve as our 42 FSS Deputy and is excited about joining the team. Mark’s priority as our new Deputy is to help his teammates succeed. He believes that when teammates succeed, the mission succeeds, and a successful FSS is critical to Maxwell AFB. Mark said “our Air Force leaders often say it’s people who make our Air Force great. I agree, and the FSS mission is the people.” Mark tries to live by two rules that reflect his belief that all people are worthy of dignity and respect. First, is to consider the needs of others greater than his own and second, is to treat others better than the way he wants to be treated. Mark believes that success is rarely achieved without experiencing some failures along the way. He believes it's ok to fail so long as we learn and grow as a result. But Mark is more than his Air Force career; he's a family man! He loves to spend time with his wife of 33 years, Gabi, and their three beautiful daughters. THE JOURNEY...

"Just get out there and do it. Don't wait to find someone to tell you how to do it; don't wait for a chance to make an excuse. Start moving today and then go further tomorrow."

Since 2005, Major Jared Struck has wanted to make a

change in the world he knew. First, it started as a personal

Squadron Officer School

goal to lose weight, kick bad habits, and run his first marathon. In September of the same year, he finished that athletic mission, but the itch for running only continued. He made his runs longer, more challenging, and had the support of his family behind him. After all, if his grandfather could walk the entire length of Italy while fighting in World War II, he could train enough to do an Ultra Marathon. Coming from the Squadron Officer School staff here at Maxwell AFB, Jared’s gone through training to prepare for this hardcore run. He’s gotten used to the humidity that our state gifts us with every summer and has learned to work through it. Special training in the sauna has prepared him for higher temperatures and stressful climates that he’ll have to battle against. He’s learned to embrace the atmosphere here so that he can go represent Alabama as a whole. Much of his exercise plan has been self-driven, and he’s going to put it to the test against a run that’ll push him to the limits. Now he's ready to complete the Badwater 135 race that covers 135 miles in California. It begins July 15 in Death Valley, 288 feet below sea level, and ending on Mt. Whitney, 8,374 feet above sea level. Jared hopes to complete the race in roughly 40 hours, but this time he isn't running for personal goals. Partnering with One Place: Family Justice Center and Jackson Hospital, Jared has joined the race to end abuse. This marathon signifies his fight against domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, child abuse, and elder abuse. He hopes to make people aware of One Place, a website you can go to get the help you need and have your information remain completely confidential. It covers multiple places around the Alabama area and provides the resources to those in need. Follow Jared as he completes this race by tracking his progress through the official Badwater website, or visit One Place to learn more about his cause: Visit One Place: https://www.oneplacefjc.org Visit Badwater 135: www.badwater.com/event/badwater-135
