thoughts 42 FSS COMMANDER'S
Greetings to the Maxwell-Gunter community this summer! We’ve seen a lot of action on the base with new students and families arriving over the summer, and now it’s back-to-school time! As the Commander of the 42d Force Support Squadron, I welcome you to Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex, known as “the best home-town in the Air Force.” We are glad to have students return to Air University in person this year, and we look forward to serving you. The 42 FSS operates many of the facilities on-base where we encourage you to relax, unwind and enjoy time with family, friends, co-workers, and classmates. If you are here for a short term or a longer course, you’ll want to check out the dining and recreation opportunities available. Visit Rickenbacker’s T&G at Maxwell AFB and Hangar 42 at Gunter Annex for great Starbucks© coffee and delicious breakfast sandwiches. They’re both open for lunch, too, and serve flatbreads, hot and cold sandwiches. If you’re looking for a more substantial start to your day, visit the Two Putts Grill at the golf course for delicious breakfast platters, burritos, and omelets. The grill offers great burgers and wings, and some great healthy options for lunch, too. You can reserve the Fireplace Room between the Pro Shop and the grill to hold a meeting or a host a special occasion. While you’re there, visit the Pro Shop and make a tee-time for a round of golf or fling golf. The Get Golf Ready program offered each month is a great way to learn the basics or hone your skills.
The Maxwell Club is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and offers burgers, sandwiches, wraps and daily specials. In the evening, you can order food in the lounge and enjoy a beer or cocktail with friends. Don’t miss karaoke nights downstairs in The Pit on Thursdays, or the First Friday specials every month. The Club will be hosting a champagne tasting event on August 6, and a Paint and Sip party on September 29 where you can decorate your own Fall door hanger. The Club staff is also available to help you plan special events for your family, classmates, or coworkers, too. Maxwell Bowling and Gunter Lanes offer pizza, wings, burgers and more for lunch and dinner. The Scoops ice cream shop at Maxwell Bowling has a great selection of ice cream flavors to satisfy your sweet tooth, too. Stop by with classmates for lunch or grab some friends for a fun night out with dinner and bowling. Bowling leagues start in July and September, so get a group together for some fun competition! The Outdoor Recreation Office and Information, Tickets and Tours office located on Selfridge Street can help you plan a trip to Disneyworld, Universal Studios or just a weekend get-away. Book overnight stays or spend a day on the water by visiting our outdoor rec areas of Lake Martin in Dadeville, AL or Mid Bay Shores in Destin, FL. You can also rent everything you’ll need for a camping trip to the great outdoors. We welcome you to Life at the Max! You can learn more about everything offered on base at www.lifeatthemax.us and check us out on Facebook @42dfss. -Maj Jenny Stewart

FEDERAL IMPACT AID Public schools everywhere are in constant need of assistance in finding resources for their student body in terms of affording classroom assistance or supplies. A Federal funding opportunity called Impact Aid is designed to assist local school districts that have a loss of tax revenue due to the enrollment of students from families who live or work on tax-exempt Federal properties; such as military installations. Because of the loss of tax revenue, schools districts find it difficult to allocate funding where it’s most needed. Impact Aid funds become a part of the school system’s general operating budget and can be used to support the cost of teacher salaries, classroom equipment, and other enrichment programs.
To receive Impact Aid, school districts must collect information on the number of federally connected children enrolled in its schools by way of a survey. Each year, parents are asked to complete this survey for each child enrolled in one of our local schools. The process is quite easy and only takes a few minutes to complete. So if you live or work on federal property and you have kids enrolled in school this year, all you need to do is simply complete the survey and return it to your child’s school. All of your responses are treated as confidential and will only be used for the purpose of the Federal Aid Program.
Don't miss out on your chance to give back to our local schools and our kids!

BRETT HALL RENOVATIONS The University Inn located on Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex has one of the largest portfolios in the Air Force. In fact, they are the Air Force’s #1 lodging DV host. They house thousands of Airman every year, whether they’re here for temporary duty, change of duty station, or students at Air University. Recently they’ve been a part of a project to upgrade all of the 31 suites at Maxwell, including our General Officer quarters: Brett Hall. Throughout their process, lodging ensures that all the revenue they generate goes right back into the hands of their customers. Their team works diligently to keep all the rooms to the Air Force standards and are prepared with careful attention. No matter who’s staying in their rooms, everyone will be taken care of with the upmost respect and ease. Lodging General Manager, Chris Kitchens, stated, “The finished product of the facilities latest and upcoming renovations demonstrate the outstanding teamwork between all of the departments involved. Our military and civilian guests deserve to be well taken care of, and our team has worked very hard to ensure the new rooms have all the comforts of home.”
