FALL FESTIVAL • HOLIDAY PARTIES 42D FORCE SUPPORT SQUADRON • 4TH QUARTER • OCTOBER-DECEMBER 2018
COVER STORY
At the end of the day, when you’re home from work or school, nothing is more important than your family. Although difficult times may come your way, you can always count on them to have your back with unending support and love. Parent, child, grandparent, cousin and even your pets are all there to share your laughter and to lift you up. As we bring this year to a close with all sorts of special holidays, remember to spread the joy and cheer with your loved ones in any way you know how. To a stranger, you may be just another person in the world, but to your family you are their world. Special thanks and recognition to Cheyenne and Colton, the beautiful children of Maj Brett Kuhrt and his wife Danielle.

thoughts 42 FSS COMMANDER'S
Maj Michelle P. Richards
The weather is still warm, but it is clear fall has arrived. Falling leaves, spooky decorations, and candy bowls overflowing signal that it’s that time of year for festivities and camaraderie.
Everyone is busy making preparations for holiday celebrations. There can be a tremendous amount of work and planning that goes into the perfect dinner or the best gift in order to make the most memorable experience for our family and friends. However, sometimes the best laid plans just don’t work out, but often times can make the most impactful experiences. Such was the case with my family’s 2007 Thanksgiving Dinner. Our family had decided to take the stress out of Thanksgiving cooking and ordered a pre-made meal for pickup. It was glorious. We relaxed the night before, slept in late the following day, picked up the pre-made meal and made our way over to our extended family’s home. As we began dinner preparations, we set the table, put out the side dishes, and began to move the turkey from its box to a serving platter. There was only one problem…although the turkey was cooked, it was FROZEN. Rock solid. We spent the next 3 hours microwaving and cutting pieces off the turkey to eat for dinner. In some families’ eyes, this dinner was a disaster. In our family, this particular holiday and what happened brings us a ton of fond, joyful memories. All that being said, let the FSS help alleviate any stress with holiday planning.
We’ve got 3 big base wide events coming up that are full of fun and laughter. The first event in October is Fall Fest. You can expect to see trunk or treat, pumpkins, dancing and so much more. The second event is November’s Customer Appreciation. We are thankful for you and your families and want to show you through over $5,000 in giveaways. The last event is our expanded version of Breakfast with Santa that we have titled: Santa’s Winter Wonderland. Please see our website, Facebook, and the magazine for more details. Lastly, don’t forget our party planning service, available for both private and unit events. Let our FSS professionals help you.
Thank you again for your continued support to the FSS and our Personnel, Manpower, and Services (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) programs. We are so thankful for our exceptional customers and look forward to this next year. We wish you all the best!

"I am thankful for the opportunity to be in the Air Force because it’s provided me with a chance to start my family and to get a head start on my financial stability. It’s training me to be in a good position, so I can be in a good line of jobs with a good head on my shoulders. Being in the Air Force has provided me with great leadership. SMSgt Boyd is an amazing supervisor and superintendent; honestly, I couldn't be the same headstrong person talking to you today without her constant feedback. Every moment shapes where I'm going to be in life 5 or 10 years down the line. I am super grateful for that and having people who really care about you and put you in the right place - that's what you’ll find here at Maxwell. I'm grateful and THANKFUL to be put in a position of a wealth of friendship and kindness, for my family - especially my son - and to spend all these holidays with my family."

"I am most thankful for my family, especially my spouse and step-children. My spouse supports me and my goals and dreams 200% every single day, and my three step-children love and accept me unconditionally. Without them I would not be the woman, spouse, parent and officer I am today. I am also thankful for the opportunities the Air Force has given me in my 20+ career, especially as a female aviator, B-1 Weapon Systems Officer and as a Lieutenant Colonel. There are so many countries where I would not have these opportunities. Lastly, I'm extremely thankful for the 32 Student Squadron Centurions. They are an amazing squadron that I am blessed every day to lead... Centurions Forever...!"

334-953-3366 Information is available online at https://LifeAtTheMax.us/partner-with-us/
Greeting from the Maxwell Retiree Activities Office! Since our last article we bade farewell to 42nd Wing commander, Col. Erik Shafa. Col. Shafa was a great supporter of the RAO mission and we wish him well. Our new wing commander, Col. Patrick Carley, has visited the RAO and expressed his support as well. We look forward to working with him and continuing the mission of the RAO program. One of the vital missions of the Retiree Activities Program is to inform military retirees and their families about the numerous benefits and organizations that assist retirees. Our office keeps current lists of contact information for these organizations. You can obtain this information by calling us at 334-953-6725 or sending us an email at retiree.affairs@us.af.mil. For more general information about retiree matters please check our website at www.maxwell.af.mil/RESOURCES/RetireeActivities-Office/ and the Air Force Retiree Services website at www.retirees.af.mil/. We also serve retirees and families from all military branches so if you need guidance regarding your specific military branch please contact us at the above phone number or email address. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate one of our outstanding volunteers, Capt. Elijah Jackson (USAF, Ret.), for winning the AFPC Retiree Activities Office Volunteer of the Year Award this year. Elijah has been an excellent asset to our program for over four years now. He has helped organize multiple events the RAO has held
around base, and also mans a shift in our office to provide support to retirees and their families. In addition to the RAO, Elijah has also volunteered in the civilian community for over 20 years. Thanks to Elijah and to all the volunteers that keep our program running. Finally, I would like to remind you that the Tricare retiree dental program is ending on 31 December 2018. Please be aware that open enrollment for the FEDVIP is November 12 through December 10, 2018. For more information check out the BENEFEDS web page at www.tricare.benefeds.com. In closing, we at the Maxwell RAO want to wish you a happy holiday season. We hope to see you at the 2018 Maxwell Retiree Appreciation Day. Please call 334-953-6725 for details. Take care!
