What is your favorite part of being the new FSS commander so far?

Meet the NEW 42 FSS Commander, Maj AnnaBelle S. Hill

What factors do you include in everyday leadership?

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

At the beginning of my career as an Airman, I was told of how uniquely special the experience of military service would be and the wonderful people I would eventually meet. Those expectations still hold true today because of the Air Force's values that all of us live by. The best advice is to live every day by those things that set us apart from everyone else--those things that make all of us great: integrity, service before self, and striving to excel in everything we do. Because of those values, I am so proud of what we do for the Air Force, our community, our families, our fellow Americans, and our international partners.

As much as I would like everyone to think that I came into the world as the Airman I am today, I know that what I have become, as a leader, is a collection of not only my early-on experiences, but more importantly, the collection of everyone I have served with. I feel like I continually win the lottery with the senior leadership I have served with. I still learn so much from our youngest Airmen who bring so much to the table with their bright-eyed and enthusiastic approach to any mission. Our civilian staff members, who, with their wealth of knowledge, keep our facilities running smoothly every day. Then, somehow, I have cornered the market on getting paired with some extraordinary senior noncommissioned officers who have always guided me with their vast knowledge and experiences. So, I lead as a collection of the very best traits the Air Force has produced through the past few decades.

I believe that no matter what the unit or activity, the Air Force is powered by amazing Airmen and their families and wonderful civilian employees who make sure we are mission-ready. So, in the past few months, I have had the unique privilege, that only a commander can have, of going out and meeting so many good-hearted and passionate people who work hard every day at our facilities to make sure we are all taken care of. What would you like to say to Airmen of Maxwell-Gunter and their families? irst, I am so happy to be here and excited F to be a commander of the 42 FSS, as we get to do so much for our Airmen, your families, and our civilians. In the past several months, I have gotten to meet so many great people and look forward to meeting everyone. Maxwell-Gunter and the River Region is such a charming place, and I have enjoyed the many times I have gotten to be here. Therefore, my professional goal is to make sure my staff and I can work hard to make sure every one of you understand how special this place will remain in your heart even as you continue on to other assignments. We have some great things coming up like next year's, highly-anticipated air show--the timing of my squadron command could not be any better. How would you encourage Airmen to utilize the FSS services? I have spent my entire life under the auspices of the U.S. military: my grand father was a career Sailor; and my father is a Marine. I just think it is great that we are in an organization that understands how important it is to provide so many facilities, activities and services to our Airmen, their families, and our civilians. This is my fifth time back to the wonderful River Region-I started my Air Force career here as an ROTC cadet at summer field training. So, of course I have always enjoyed its contrasting combination of rich culture of history and its revitalized districts, but I think it is important for all of us to remember that these FSS facilities are funded, in large part, by all of us, and therefore, it is up to us to make sure we keep it by using it. So, as you and your family members look through this magazine, discover the things 42 FSS offers, take advantage of them, and encourage others to do the same.

3D MOVIE

There is always something unique about movies nowadays. They can make beautiful scenes with CGI that even animation looks like it could be real life. To make it better, someone had the brilliant idea of turning a movie into 3D where it looks like the images on the screen are coming right out at you! If you’ve never experienced that before, then let the Gunter Youth Center show it to you. We’ll be voting for movies in the weeks before November

The Exchange is also vital for helping our Quality of Life programs which include Outdoor Recreation, Child Development Centers, School Age Centers, and Fitness Centers. These facilities help raise the young minds of future generations and ensure that our Airmen remain strong and healthy to carry on the Air Force Mission. After two-thirds of the earnings are put back into military programs, the remaining third is used to increase the quality of the stores both online and in person.

You can get added bonuses for shopping at an Exchange near you by signing up to be a Military Star Card Holder. The Parsons Family Left to Right: Claudia, Maria, and Maj Stephen Parson My husband and I have been married for 8 years. During that time, we've learned to rely on one another fully and the importance of community - being so far from family. We've toured the South during my husband's military career - Arkansas, Texas and now Alabama! We've gone through 5 deployments and numerous TDYs. We have two children - 1 in Heaven and 1 here on Earth. While this military life hasn't always been easy, the incredible friendships made and experiences gained have been worth it! - Claudia

18 | October-December 2019

The Rodrignez Family Left to Right: Joey, Julia, Debbie, Col James Rodrignez, and Rachel I grew up in a large Italian family in NJ, where even the extended family never moved more than 30 minutes away. When I decided to marry my husband I knew my life would never be anything like that I had known. As I reflect on my years as an Air Force wife, I can definitely say I enjoyed every one of our assignments. Every chapter of our life has brought great joy and even adventure. We have travelled the world from the Pacific to Europe. Along the way we have encountered many incredible people for whom we call our family. Of course we have had our challenges, known sacrifice, sorrow, and even loss. For these experiences are who we are today, a family that is strong, adaptable, adventurous and devoted to each other. As we look forward to retirement from active duty, I can say, I am proud of my husband’s service, our children, and the life we have had in the Air Force. I wouldn’t change it for the world. - Debbie

The Hogue Family Left to Right: MSgt(s) Rebecca Hogue, Jaxon, Jase, and Msgt Jonathan Hogue Our life as a military family has brought us an outstanding opportunity to see the world and start a family. My wife Rebecca and I met in Ramstein Germany over 11 years ago. In that time we have traveled all over the world and started our family with our two boys. We recognize that military life brings stress and challenges, however, we are both grateful for the opportunities and benefits we have received over the years of our service. Our children, although young, have become extremely resilient as the nature of our business comes with moving every few years. Every stop on the journey comes with new friendships and new beginnings and we continue to look forward to the next stop. - Jonathan

The Grant Family Left to Right: Christopher II, Msgt Ronica Grant, Christopher, and Kristina My husband Christopher and I have been married for 13 years, and we have two wonderful children Kristina (8) and Christopher II (7). Being a military family has been a balancing act over the years. With my husband being prior Navy, the military life has been easier to handle. We make most decisions as a family unit, which I believe is healthy for us. With the inclusion of our children’s decisions we all adapt quickly to change; be it moving schools and making friends or my husband finding a new job. The military provides many services to help with the transition. I am so blessed and grateful for my military family, and I believe we, The Grant Family, are closer because of it. - Ronica

The Dewey Family Left to Right: Naomi, Sarah, and Maj Brandon Dewey Military life is not easy, and as a family, we certainly face different issues than non-military families. Being a military spouse can mean setting aside your personal goals/aspirations to support your significant other. However, being part of a military family connects you to a tremendous support network, and it's incredible! Taking part in military life can bring incredible opportunities, such as frequent traveling and even living abroad for several years. The military family lifestyle can be relentless, but we make the best of any situation and enjoy the experience and expanding our network of friends. My family and I are grateful to be part of this Air Force Military Family. - Sarah

Whether you are hitting up the gym to gain muscle, build your stamina, or simply wanting to better your health, our Fitness Centers have the class for you! Join in one of our multiple workout groups and start bragging about your new gains in no time!

SPIN

ALL FITNESS LEVELS You will find this to be the most exhilarating hour of your day. More than just a physical workout, super energetic and motivating, you’ll burn calories and increase fitness with interval drills, hill sprints, and speed.

ZUMBA

ALL FITNESS LEVELS A fusion of Latin and International music - dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting, effective fitness system! The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. Zumba utilizes the principles of fitness interval training and resistance training to maximize caloric output, fat burning and total body toning. It is a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps.

H.I.I.T

INTERMEDIATE FITNESS LEVELS Stands for high intensity interval training that is comprised of 8 or more exercises that are performed by intervals of time or repetitions. This type workout is used to incorporate high intensity cardiovascular training to increase overall muscular strength.

BODY EXTREME

ALL FITNESS LEVELS A complete total body workout designed to increase strength and cardio fitness while improving balance & flexibility.

Classes are subject to be changed monthly due to availability. For dates and hours, please check

YOGA

ALL FITNESS LEVELS Yoga with an emphasis on breath/ body movement. We hold poses, but our focus is on the transition between poses and the body control we develop therein.

TABATA

ALL FITNESS LEVELS Tabata workouts are short in duration and designed to boost post exercise calorie burn so your metabolism keeps burning more calories long after the exercise is over. Within each workout, you will experience short intervals based on Tabata training that delivers a calorie drenching workout and post metabolic boost.

STRENGTH STRETCH & FLEXIBILITY

ALL FITNESS LEVELS Strength Stretch/Flexibility helps when daily activities such as getting out of bed, lifting a child, or squatting to pick something up can become more difficult to do. In addition, inadequate flexibility can affect your athletic performance by preventing you from reaching the full potential, strength, and power of your muscles.

RUN/ENDURANCE

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED FITNESS LEVELS Run/Endurance acts as an active recovery based workout from the H.I.I.T workouts in which the intensity is reduced. The average distance for the run is 2.5 to 3 miles.

The Professional Development Center exists for one reason…you!!! Please take advantage of the many courses offered within this center. We offer John Maxwell courses that take you into a deep dive so that you understand your strengths and weaknesses while offering new perspectives so that you can better lead and manage at your level. We also provide courses that help you write better, such as the bullet writing that is led by some talented writers. Other courses will help you coach and lead your teams; this class is normally reserved for supervisors and it is hosted by our friends at the Eaker Center. All courses located on our SharePoint site are open to not only the military and civilian members, but their spouses as well. We encourage all to come and participate. If your spouse is unable to access the SharePoint, just give us a call or email and we will be happy to get them signed up. This program exists for you! If there is some specialty training you would like to see us offer please let us know and we’ll do our best to create a course and find someone with that talent to lead the class. Come by and see for yourself how we can assist you. Your professional development is awaiting.
