LIFE AT THE MAX
LIFE AT THE MAX
Happy Fall, Y’all! The hot temperatures are slowly fading away, and it’s beginning to look like Fall around Maxwell-Gunter! While we had an incredible summer season, Fall brings new energy and excitement for family fun, holiday parties and down time during school breaks. While everyone has experienced some level of uncertainty surrounding the current public health emergency, as the Commander of the 42d Force Support Squadron I want to assure you that we will continue to provide outstanding events, programs and services for our Airmen/Guardians, families, retirees and civilians through this Fall and holiday season. Our calendar is full of fun things for families to enjoy together. Check out Pirate Palooza at Fam Camp and Fall Fest at Maxwell Club & Event Center in October. Both events are held outside and will feature fun and games for all ages. Santa’s Winter Wonderland in December brings a little magic to the holidays for children and adults. For a fun day trip, check out the Birmingham Ghost Tour, the outing to Penton Farms, and the trip to the Wellborn Muscle Car Museum offered through Outdoor Recreation. While transportation is not offered due to Covid-19 restrictions, our group will caravan and enjoy time exploring and shopping at these Alabama attractions. If you’re looking for a longer get-away, now is the perfect time for a quiet retreat where you can enjoy beautiful scenery at the beach or lake. Lake Martin and Mid-Bay Shores recreation areas are offering winter rates for daily, weekend and weekly reservations. You can also book now for spring break and other dates in 2022. Outdoor Recreation has everything you might need for camping, boating, and exploring, too. You can see the list of available items for rent at www.lifeatthemax.us .
Events at Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex are subject to cancellation and change in accordance with safety measures due to Covid-19.
There’s always something fun going on at Maxwell Bowling and Gunter Lanes, especially the holiday parties for kids and adults. There will be holiday fun at Lake Martin this year, too, including a turkey trot run through the park area. If running isn’t your favorite fitness activity, try out Zombie Zumba at Maxwell Fitness, or book a tee time for the Par-3 golf tournament and the Glow Ball Tournament at Cypress Tree Golf Course. Best wishes for a fun, happy and healthy Fall and holiday season! We look forward to serving you!

MONTH OF THE
MILITARY FAMILY THE FLAGG FAMILY
Two Master Sergeants, four children, seven assignments, three states, two continents, and almost 14 years describe Corey and LaToya Flagg’s life as a military family that began back when the two met as young Airmen in Texas at Tech School. After wedding in 2008, LaToya and Corey were assigned to different bases and spent the first year of marriage apart. Seeing each other took planning and scheduling, something they both would get used to over the years. Once they were assigned to the same base, they worked in the same Security Forces squadron on different shifts. With a blended family, they became experts at scheduling and planning with the children. “We had to schedule everything,” LaToya said. “Since we worked different shifts, we made sure we planned family time and leave together as often as we could. The other thing we did was learn to ‘go with the flow’.”
LaToya and Corey always made time for fun experiences with their children, and holidays became the most special times for them all. To prepare for Thanksgiving, LaToya always took leave to spend time cooking everyone’s favorite foods and making it memorable no matter where they were.
16 | October-December 2021

While they were stationed in Germany, the family relied on technology and traditional methods to stay in touch with their extended families.
“BEING AT MAXWELL HAS BEEN A BLESSING FOR ALL OF US.”
- MSGT LATOYA FLAGG
“Our families were in Georgia and Alabama, so we used Skype to talk to them, and we wrote real letters. We were away from them but wanted the kids to know their extended family, so we worked it out.” The Flagg family has been at Maxwell since 2019 and are planning this to be their last assigned base before retiring. The experiences
their children have been incredible, according to LaToya. “They have friends from all over the world now, and they’ve learned about different cultures. They’re at the age though, that we thought it was time for them to have more stability and to be able to see their cousins and other family more often,” she said. “Being at Maxwell has been a blessing for all of us.” Currently MSgt LaToya Flagg serves as the First Sergeant for the 42d Medical Group. MSgt Corey Flagg is a the NCOIC, Standardization and Evaluations with 42d Security Forces Squadron. Their children are Kelaiyah (20), Ky’an (16), Kylie (12) and Kylar (7).

GLÜHWEIN
Are you interested in having a taste of Germany without having to travel there? Glühwein is the name for German mulled wine that can be bought at the Christmas markets to help people keep warm. Out of the many different recipes, this one is our favorite and we would like to share it with you. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
INGREDIENTS • 1 bottle Dry Red Wine (700 ml to 1 liter) • 1 Orange • 1 Lemon • 1/2 Cup Sugar • 2 Cups Grape Juice
• • • • •
5 Cloves, whole 1 Bay Leaf 1 Star Anise 10 Juniper Berries 1 stick Cinnamon
Pour the sugar into a large pot and heat until the sugar melts. Caramelize the sugar until it's medium brown. Add the grape juice. Be careful - it will steam for a moment. Stir until the caramelized sugar dissolves into the juice. Slice the orange and lemon and add to the pot. Add the whole cloves, bay leaf, star anise, juniper berries, and stick of cinnomon. 7. Simmer for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat. 8. Add the wine and re-heat. Remove the fruits and spices. 9. Serve hot in a mug, maybe add some honey and stir with a stick of cinnamon. Tips: Do not exceed 158°F or the alcohol will begin to cook out of the wine. If you want more of a kick, spike the Glühwein with a shot of rum or vodka.

Early Literacy Join us for an early literacy event that includes a story and activities for your child. We also share tips and ideas for things you can do at home to make the world of books come alive for your child.
Fostering Your Military-Connected Child’s Communication Skills to Minimize Conflict
WHO WE ARE
MCEC Parent Support provides informative and interactive parent workshops to groups and organizations in the local community.
OUR MISSION
Parent Support serves parents affected by transition through teams placed primarily in highly mobile military communities and installations. Our goal is to empower the best "guidance counselors" (the parents) to be informed, positive, and proactive transition specialists at home by understanding the academic, social, and emotional implications of school moves
This workshop examines reasons why conflict arises with school-aged children and teenagers, and why learning effective conflict-resolution skills are desirable. Parents will learn different strategies to develop communication skills to help reduce the frequency and intensity of conflict in the family and foster an atmosphere of trust and security.
Tell Me A Story The mission of the program is to empower Military Children by using literature and their own stories in a way that fosters skills for resilience, strong peer and parent connections, a sense of pride and accomplishment, and a caring community. Tell Me A Story is a FAMILY literacy event geared toward children ages 4-12.
FAFSA and CSS Profile Presenters will offer a general overview of two of the financial programs available, the FAFSA and the College Scholarship Service Profile, commonly known as the CSS Profile.
The Magic of the Family Meal This workshop addresses the many benefits of eating together as a family. It identifies common obstacles and possible solutions, along with tips and strategies to make mealtime engaging, healthy, and fun for the entire family.
