HAPPY 73RD BIRTHDAY! September 18, 1947 marks the day that the United States Air Force was established with the swearing in of W. Stuart Symington as Secretary and General Carl A. Spaatz as the first Chief of Staff. And how did this all begin? With the Wright Brothers' invention of the world's first successful flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The Air Force has evolved so much since its beginning as the Air Service of the American Expeditionary Force in 1917 to the Army Air Corps in 1926, however, the five core missions of today’s Air Force remain consistent with the original mission established in 1947. These five core missions are air superiority, global integrated intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, rapid global mobility, global strike, and command and control There are always rising opportunities to make your mark within the Air Force. Every year new recruits join the growing military community to pursue skills and careers while serving their country. These inspiring Airmen work toward making a better Air Force for our nation every day. Let’s take today to celebrate all their previous achievements and to all their future endeavors. Here's to a great year of growth, and we can't wait to see what the next one brings. You can commemorate this Air Force milestone with the help of FSS facilities. Take your friends or family out to enjoy special deals at the Cypress Tree Golf Course, or host your own party with rental equipment from the Outdoor Recreation Center. ODR has grills and bounce houses as well as boats and camping gear available for you. No matter how you celebrate, we hope it makes for a great weekend!

AIR FORCE BE READY If you aren't from around here, let us first introduce you to the hurricane

STEP

GET A KIT When the wind develops a mind of its own, it's common for a telephone pole to get hit by fallen trees or power outages to occur. Make sure you have first aid supplies, food, and water ready for those moments when the microwave, stove, and fridge can't be accessed. Most of the time, these outages won't last long, but it pays to stay prepared.

season in the south. From June to November, the weather gets crazy, but September is known as the peak month.

STEP

MAKE A PLAN In times where you and your family might be separated when disaster hits, make sure you have a way of staying in touch. Whether a rendezvous point or shelter in place, ensure that everyone knows where to be or where to go. If you have little ones, make sure they know the safest place to be in their homes or school.

Sometimes we can go a week without rain, but for the most part, you're going encounter sporadic drizzles, angry winds, and dense humidity.

So what can you do to prepare for this weather? Let us help you out in three

BE PREPARED

easy steps.

The first thing you want to accept is that these things happen commonly in the south. Maxwell is ready to handle situations, and we're here to help keep you and your family safe. The more mentally prepared you are to handle unpredictable weather, the more ready you can handle the real deal. It wouldn't hurt to make sure your AtHoc is updated or to always tune in to your local weather channel!

For more information on how you can prepare, visit https://www.beready.af.mil/

September is Suicide Prevention Month Have you ever wondered how you can help? Make A Goal Let it be your personal mission to be there if someone needs your help.

Recognize Warning Signs Keep an eye on mood changes, sleep difficulties, withdraw from social events, or lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities.

Promote Resilience Practice self-care such as exercise, sleep and relaxation. Invest in resilience skills like mindfulness, expressing thanks, and connecting with people or nature.

Ask Directly ask the individual if they are having thoughts of death or self-harm.

Care Care about their answer. If they hesitate, or seem uncertain, ask follow-up questions to convey that you care about their well-being.

Escort If the individual is having thoughts of suicide or needs help, escort them to a qualified professional or leadership. 18 | September 2020

Build Connections Reach out to family, friends or co-workers to build lasting relationships. Get to know someone in your life so you can better catch signs and assist those who might need it.

Know Your Resources If you or someone you know is struggling, make sure you are aware of what is available to you. Good sources are Chaplains, First Sergeants, leadership, or counselors.

If you are coping with trauma, depression, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed, confused, hurt, angry, conflicted or just stressed, then seek help right away!
