Greetings
from the publisher Essential Services: Conserve & Pay More?
What’s wrong with this picture? When it comes to the entities that provide for us the resources essential for living, are we at the point we are working against ourselves? Over and over we are told that these natural resources—what we all need to survive—are scarce and the costs of providing of them and delivering them will rise. Is that true, or necessary? Right now a growing number of us are disturbed about the direction these resources come from and cost. Whether it’s water or power, the idea that we should conserve these “limited” resources while watching our rates rise just doesn’t sit well. Why is it true? Simply availability? Is it upgrading and modernizing? Is it mismanagement? Holding obsolete systems in place? Is this the new normal or are there ways out of this? AND—are the solutions equitable? Answering that requires looking at water and power separately—but there are some of the common challenges or approaches. There are no scarcity of questions and this is no blue print for fixing everything, but given the current direction and that what we are talking about are our shared common resources—something that comes from nature/the planet—let’s look closer. One place I think most of us agree on is the idea that conserving more should have something to do with what we pay. How do we get there? These are shared resources and a lot of needs, wants and desires are fulfilled by them. That requires that solutions are shared and equitable too, doesn’t it? Is it equitable to offer people a rebate for replacing water-thirsty landscapes then give most of the money to a few people in Rancho Santa Fe? Or has eliminating those lawns left many people out and burned? As the city of San Diego moves 4 | The Life Connection
toward installing more solar panels on public buildings—a good idea—that also means fewer individuals will get tax credits. Will that shift the burden of paying for our current power structure more to individuals as governments and businesses are more easily able to shift to renewables? Is the PUC taking a look at what works for all of us, or rubber-stamping the requests of SDG&E? Shouldn’t we look at that closer? Right now we have different kinds of entities providing essential services. We have for-profit businesses, such as SDG&E, providing power, as well as public water districts providing water. Both tell us that infrastructure needs replacing. I am very surprised to hear that they are surprised that infrastructure needs to be replaced and am especially surprised to hear that they have not been collecting money from stake holders to do that since, well, probably forever. Can they consider themselves efficient or well-managed if they haven’t? I know part of my SDG&E bill goes for maintenance and repair. If both water and power costs are going up because new projects are being built, that’s different. Is there a big project on the horizon? We’ve heard that one reason water costs are going up is that Colorado River water prices are expected to rise. Does that mean we are being billed in advance in anticipation of water costing more? But not in anticipation of the need to replace infrastructure? Water produced by desalination plants is twice as expensive as both imported water and recycled/purified wastewater, which is now called “pure” water. Because there is a good chance that the cost of producing pure water will be the cheapest way to go in the future it makes sense to invest there, doesn’t it? Maybe. —continued on page 16

Current News Parliament of World Religions Concludes
Every conversation about religion somehow leads to politics: “We are right and they are wrong.” It’s always we vs. them, and what is wrong. The Parliament of World Religions that was held this year in October 15-19 in Salt Lake City, looks less at politics and more about interconnection, and unity. We are moving toward a new direction, one that says that we are all one, and we wish to express it through dialogues, learning about each other’s traditions and rituals, experiencing each other expression of the divine, sharing a meal together, and getting to know each other. Rabbanit Hadasah Forman (the Rabbi’s wife) from the Holy Land told a story about a gathering of Jewish and Palestinian children on a bus. They were asked to close the windows to protect themselves from rock throwing. A Jewish boy said: “It’s okay, they are here,” referring to the Palestinian’s kids. The innocent statement simply meant: together, we are safe. What a powerful concept. The Parliament of World Religions gathers every 5 years and has been held in different corners of the world since 1893. The first parliament held in Chicago, and later on in Cape Town, South Africa; Barcelona, Spain, and Melbourne, Australia. The Parliament focuses on a subject, a hot topic related to tensions in the world. This year I was happy to see the rising voice of women leaders that emphasizes that the true meaning of religion is compassion. Learn more about the powerful messages of the Parliament of World Religions in the December issue. —Ronit Gabay

Celebrating a Life of Contribution John Falchi has given countless time and energy towards bringing people together for peace and cooperative projects. Now, approaching his 80th birthday his focus has shifted to being the primary caregiver for his wife Sarah. At same time John’s health has recently declined as well. Nevertheless, he is looking forward to a gathering to celebrate his “Change of Life from a Networking Shameless Agitator to a Conscious Care-Giver.” It also happens to be his 80th birthday and the 30th year of his work as a “Creative Altruist” in the community in which he has helped many groups, pro bono, to reach their goals and objectives. It will take place from 6-9 p.m. on November 15, 2015, in Bard Hall of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, at 4190 Front Street, San Diego, CA 92103. It’s also a potluck, so bring some food to share with others. The program will include some emphasis on John’s past life and activities, and there will also be some entertainment. Because people live busy lives, and some of you live much too far away to attend, you can still take part by writing a little paragraph about how you have interacted with
John over the years for inclusion in a memory book which we will be given to him on this occasion. Please rsvp to pacerjp4693@sbcglobal.net

Chia: Nature’s Tiny Powerhouse The holidays are just around the corner and for many of us, our food intake and eating can get a little off balance from all the treats and celebrations. Beat the battle this holiday season and incorporate some chia seeds into your daily regime by simply adding them to your water bottle, morning oatmeal or smoothie to give you energy from the moment you start your day! Chia are tiny nutritional seeds chock-full of omega-3s. In fact, they have 50% more omega 3s than flax seeds. Omega3s are essential to everyday brain function, skin and hair growth, exercise recovery, and fighting inflammation – (one of the leading causes of disease). Chia seeds are extremely high in protein, and uniquely, one of few vegan and gluten free complete sources of protein. In addition, chia seeds are rich in magnesium and calcium – gram for gram, more than most dairy products, which support bone health. Chia seeds are also the perfect tool for weight management and regular digestion, because of their high fiber content and gelatinous quality. When soaked, chia seeds can absorb up to 12 times their weight in water! This makes them ultrahydrating and creates the perfect base for chia seed pudding, thickener for a smoothie, egg replacement, and beyond! In addition to chia seeds, another clean eating food you can quickly add to your daily diet is sesame seeds. Sesame seeds boast 20% protein and loads of dietary fiber. Being that they contain omega-6 fatty acids, antioxidants, and B vitamins, they have been shown to lower blood pressure, lower “bad” cholesterol, and aid in maintaining heart health. They help to stave off free radicals from the body, and boost 6 | The Life Connection

An interview with Spiritual Psychologist, Brian Leslie Miller
What is ‘Spiritual Psychology”?
S
piritual Psychology takes the approach that we are Soul, having a human experience, and sees Life’s questions and challenges through this lens. Viewing from this perspective helps us understand how Life is supporting our growth as an individual. Dr. Wayne Dyer wrote a popular book called, “There’s a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem”. Originally, Psychology was the study of the Soul’s journey, the very root word in psychology, ‘psyche’, means Soul. I say, “Life is the School, Love is the Lesson”, And I prove it to people, by pointing out that Life has the ability to bring lessons around again, and if you don’t get them, they come again, and each time you are asked a little LOUDER to get it! When you do get it, and integrate the lesson, your quality of Life increases. SO, Life is Loving you into a higher state, through favorable and not-so-favorable feedback. Things are happening FOR YOU, not “to you”. All lessons come down to loving ourselves. When we truly accept ourselves, our neuroses go away, we give ourselves permission to go for our dreams, and we accept others. Victimhood is nowhere to be found because all Life is interpreted as for us! Everything goes better from here, we’re happier people. We allow ourselves to give our unique gifts in a way that serves the Greater Good and our personal lifestyle. All lessons come down to loving ourselves. E=mc2, there is only One here. Isness…and you are It. Also, let me point out that Life is such a magical malleable Mystery, that it can orchestrate and rearrange Itself to make sure we get our version of the Lesson plan!
What’s the first thing people can do to live this?
I tell clients to adopt a “Learning Orientation to Life” so
they can always be learning and growing in the direction of their highest fulfillment. Like I just described, Life is a school, Life is communicating with you! If we adopt this, everything is helping us grow, even the difficult situations. This approach helps us stay happier. All of our relationships improve because upset is no longer about the other person, it becomes an opportunity to “look within” and expand our viewpoint. We project what we don’t accept in ourselves onto others. When we point our finger at someone to judge them, there’s three fingers pointing back at us. The “Learning Orientation to Life” provides yet another opportunity to come into wholeness!
How do people identify their Life Purpose?
We all have an inner GPS called our emotions, I call it our God Positioning System. When we follow what “lights us up”, that’s our GPS saying, “KEEP GOING!” Joseph Campbell said, “When you follow your bliss...doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors, and where there wouldn’t be a door for anyone else.” If something doesn’t feel good, your GPS is saying, “TURN, Now. TURN!” I offer a three hour process for clients called The Life Success Map that helps manage distractions and creates big ah-has for people, which is my favorite thing to do. It empowers them with a personalized map to their most fulfilling experience of Life, so they can immediately laser focus on those things! I made it very affordable, because my mission is to help spread happiness. What we focus on we become!
What exactly do you mean “Beyond Ego”?
I live in Encinitas, CA, we have recently been in the news as the model city of the For-Benefit-Business model. This model looks at the benefit to society, and then to shareholders. I feel this epitomizes the Greater Good mentality; this is culture moving beyond ego. The Ego has a need to feed itself. It needs to affirm it even —continued on page 18 www.LifeConnectionMagazine.com

The Institute’s primary program areas are consciousness and healing, extended human capacities, and emerging worldviews.”
What was the larger meaning of that to you?
“Noetic” comes from the Greek word nous, which means “intuitive mind” or “inner knowing.”
Jullya and I were finally in a place together at IONS to educate me on community development. You see, Jullya was well known for saying “Lets build a community!” The first day at Earth Rise was Day One in the education of Gerry for community development. I have to admit that this was the greatest unknown for me, but I had no fear.
I was sitting on a couch at home in San Diego reviewing internet web sites for a job. My best friend Jullya Conklin was sitting beside me. I referred to two Noetic Science job advertisements that looked like a good match for both of us.
My career has been in the Computer Aided Design Industry with a variety of positions in software development, ranging from development, testing, support and networks. Finally, I chose to own my own software development company. My
What do you mean by the word “Noetic?”
Can you describe your own experience of, and when you were introduced to, the Institute of Noetic Sciences ?

Were there things in your career background that have helped in preparing you to be an IONS Community Coordinator?
early introduction to engineering standards set the tolerance for quality that I have continued for my entire career. At present, I also promote all Ebook Initiatives and the ywriter5 application in terms of expressing oneself.
What is life as a Community Coordinator really like?
If anything, the recent IONS Community Group Coordinator responsibility is very refreshing in terms of day-to-day duties. Now, all I have to do is just be me and give of myself as the gift.
Tell us your experiences in obtaining a level of consciousness that led you to the Institute of Noetic Sciences besides the simple job position advertisement.
Yes, it is true that a certain level of consciousness, or the desire to be conscious, is required to be involved with the Noetic Sciences. My early experience of growing up in a large family in the south was a forced Protestant introduction to religion. However, I was naturally drawn to the Quaker Church in town. That was not exactly well received by my family members. Today I am thankful to the Quaker Church for introducing me to being moved by spirit to communicate.
Were there other influences at work there too?
Yes, my appreciation for racial differences was set in motion at my grandfather’s funeral in the early ’60s. The black community outnumbered the white community that attended his funeral. Yes, I learned at an early age that consciousness had no differences in race. As an anthropologist, Jullya and I were on the same page of this known.
What else moved you in this direction of greater consciousness?
In the mid ’70s I was not sure I was going to make it. I was looking for a foundation. It was not until I attended Terry Cole Whittaker’s Church of Religious Science that I was able to adapt to the cultural differences between the S.E. U.S. and CA. Soon I found myself volunteering at Terry’s church.
What other expressions of consciousness have there been in your life?
In my later adult life, I married an ex-Nun. My daughter, at a very early age, recognized the significant differences between my wife and myself. At my daughter’s request, I detailed those differences time after time to her. Jullya heard of these discussions and insisted that I write of these differences, I refused Jullya’s request while she was alive. After Jullya died, however, I reconsidered. I eventually wrote an E-book trilogy titled “The INDEED Series.” It took five years to complete this sciencefictional novel series. In short, the series tells of how mythology, religion and spirituality converge in a scientific setting.
Certainly, in terms of present day consciousness, how would you say you have evolved since the Terry Cole Whittaker days?
The Self Realization Fellowship has been extremely instrumental to me in going deeper into my consciousness within a community that I feel entirely comfortable with. Since spring we have: • Created a Facebook web page: facebook.com/sandiegoIONS) • Started a Meetup Group • (meetup.com/San-Diego-IONS-Community-Group ). • Hosted many events: “Death Cafés,” What are they? What is this interest in death? with Scott Masters; • “Manifesting through Energy Management” with Victoria Ross; • “OM Healing and Drumming Circle” with Karen Soriano Presently, I am working with others in planning some larger future events: A Movie and Book Preview titled “Death Makes Life Possible” with former IONS President, Dr. Marilyn Schlitz; A Panel Discussion of leading Champions of “Conscious Capitalism in San Diego;” A San Diego IONS Group Retreat at which we will work on deepening our relationships in consciousness.
Finally, given these future events, what would you identify as the mission of San Diego IONS?
My final hope for Consciousness in the future is that well-established classic scientific institutions and communities accept the validated empirical data that Noetic Science has produced for more than forty years I am targeting every audience in San Diego. I do have high hopes for the vibrant life sciences community of San Diego. I look forward to partnering with existing related Conscious Communities. My sense is, masses of communities will stand up to validate together that their experiences are real. How would you summarize your relationship to IONS at this time? I am at that grass roots level as inspired by Jullya Conklin. To quote Jullya, “Lets build a community!” In this, I will also rely on the wisdom of my predecessor, John Falchi. Importantly, this will be the first transition to community development for my personal legacy to Jullya, the person who has inspired me. In short, rebuilding the San Diego IONS Community is our Mission. For more information about IONS go to Noetic.org. Dear EarthTalk: Are the California redwoods in danger because of the drought? — Jesse Pollman, Seattle, WA
C
alifornia is home to two of the three redwood tree species: coast redwoods and giant sequoias. The coast redwood is the Earth’s tallest tree, growing more than 360 feet tall, with a trunk that can extend to 24 feet wide. The “General Sherman” giant sequoia tree at Sequoia National Park in California’s southern Sierra Nevada mountain range is the “undisputed King of the Forest,” being not only the largest living tree in the world, but the largest living organism, by volume, on the planet. General Sherman is 2,100 years old, 2.7 million pounds, 275 feet tall and 100 feet wide at its trunk. Redwood forests offer shelter to many animals, including mountain lions, American black bears, Roosevelt elks and mountain beavers. According to the National Park Service, approximately 280 species of birds have been recorded within the boundaries of redwood national and state parks. Just over 800 bird species occur in all of the United States, so that equates to approximately one third of the country’s birds. “Redwoods are an iconic key species,” said Anthony Ambrose, a postdoctoral researcher with the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California (UC), Berkeley. “They’re the tallest, oldest, and largest trees in the world. Everybody around the world knows about them. People love them, even if they’ve never visited them. They’re beautiful forests and beautiful trees.” For the past four years, California has been suffering a grueling drought. Agricultural economists at UC Davis recently calculated that the drought will cost the state $2.74 billion in 2015. Drought can reduce tree growth rates and may even lead to tree death. Coast redwoods receive up to 40 percent of their water supply from fog, which is created from warm, moist air rising from the cold surface waters of the Pacific. grow in mountain habitats where an abundant winter snowpack recharges the groundwater they depend upon and use in the summer. However, during the past two winters, much of the giant sequoia range had little to no snowpack. As a result, groundwater levels have dropped, sometimes below the roots of immense giant sequoias that are greater than 1,000 years old, says Todd Dawson, a UC Berkeley Professor of Integrative Biology who’s been studying redwood ecology and physiology for over 25 years. For the coast redwood, the drought impacts are not as severe as they seem to be for the giant sequoia. Trees at the edges of the coast redwood range, including the southern end of the range in the Santa Lucia Mountains south of Big Sur, seem to be the most affected. Here, young trees have lost a lot of their leaves, and have not grown very much, if at all, Dawson said. “Many trees are experiencing the highest levels of water stress we’ve ever measured. We’ve not seen much tree mortality, but many trees have thin crowns and do not look healthy,” Dawson said. “Our biggest question is just how far can these trees be pushed? If the winter does not bring good rainfall and a normal snowpack throughout the state I am not sure how our state trees will do. We are likely to see some mortality as we are seeing in some of the pines and firs in California. But how bad this will be - only time will tell.” CONTACT: Save the Redwoods League, www.savetheredwoods.org. DrWayneDyer.com) What was unexpected for most of us is to discover he was not finished and had one more book coming. It’s focus, of all things, is on children and heaven. It makes me wonder if he is now confirming and expanding this research. His new book, published by Hay House in October, 2015, is Memories of Heaven: Children’s Astounding Recollections of the Time Before They Came to Earth. Written in collaboration with Dee Garnes, they went through thousands of letters that spoke of how children remember what adults have forgotten. They found that many children speak freely and with certainty about past lives, choosing their parents, reincarnation, angels and spiritual visitations. Those of other topics were put into eight chapters that each includes an introduction and ending review by Dr. Dyer. What appears here are excerpts from the authors two introductions and the first chapter, titled “Memories of Heaven.” There’s a lot more to be found in the chapter than we reproduced here. The more I looked at it the more I discovered how it fit our time of Thanksgiving as well. Over and over, children expressed how clear they were about how they wanted to be in the families they chose—before coming here—and while they may miss heaven, they saw the perfection of being here too. Being thankful for those closest to us and thankful for having this life opportunity, are great reasons to be thankful. —Steve Hays From Dr. Dyer’s introduction: “I have enjoyed a lifetime love affair with children, particularly newborns, infants, and toddlers. If there is a baby in the room, it’s almost as if there is a magnetic connection that draws my attention and I must make contact. Being the father of eight children, I have spent countless hours simply gazing into the eyes of a brand-new arrival into our family. 12 | The Life Connection
D November 2015
In these private moments, I often send silent inquisitive messages asking them to tell me about God and what the formless spiritual world is like. “I have spent many, many hours of my life lying on the floor making direct contact with our new arrivals. I’ve long been fascinated by the fact that children just show up here with personality traits. I love to ask little toddlers who are only beginning to communicate with language to tell me what they remember about their experiences before coming here for this earthly incarnation. In fact, this entire book was created because my co-author, Dee Garnes, engaged in such a conversation with her little boy, Marcus, who was just learning how to communicate in single words. . . . “I have asked adults from all walks of life to share the wisdom of their little ones, and I have included many of my own experiences with my children’s recollections in this book. After reading through the responses that Dee and I received from people all over the planet, I am more than convinced that there is much more to our lives than the few short years we are allotted here on Earth. And our young boys and girls are the ones who can offer us a glimpse into the unfathomable, infinite, invisible world that is for all of us to discover. After all, they haven’t had much time to truly forget. . . . “Dee and I have gone through thousands upon thousands of entries that were sent to us when we asked for personal anecdotes about young children’s memories of heaven. So many of the stories that my own children relayed to me when they were just learning to talk, which I thought were unique to me and our family, have actually turned out to be quite universal in nature—countless people gave us almost identical stories about children reporting how they remembered choosing their parents for this journey, how they had invisible friends that only they could see, memories of past lives in the same family, visitations with God, and on and on. . . . But it is out
of the mouths of these babes, who have recently shown up here and still have some remnants of heaven clinging to them—which they talk about unequivocally and provide us all with some clues to the world beyond—it is to those voices that this book is compiled and dedicated.” In Dee Garnes’s introduction she wrote of how her son, Marcus, who was eighteen-months old, introduced her and her husband Trey, to her new child. “As we began to eat, I was staring with pride at this stunning little miracle by my side who was fumbling around with his fork, giddy with excitement and beaming with pride every time he managed to actually feed himself. He was glowing with his blond curly locks, deep green eyes, and perfect skin. I remember putting a hand on my protruding belly and feeling so incredibly blessed. So many questions came to me about these lives that my husband, Trey, and I had created (I am still so amazed that these beautiful little creatures are my babies). “I recall how mystified Trey and I had been when Marcus had placed his tiny hands on my belly, patting me gently, and declared with innocent certainty, “Baby! Baby!” I’d had no idea that I was pregnant with Shiloh; in fact, I couldn’t have been pregnant for more than a day or two. Yet Marcus, in his infinite wisdom, sensed this beginning miracle growing within me and announced it with absolute certainty. “As I was gazing at my boy now, I was thinking to myself, Somehow I made this little boy, all his physical parts . . . but where did he come from? How did he develop this consciousness? Anyone who has been around babies and children will agree that their presence here is beyond mysterious. Without even thinking, I blurted out with awe, “Where did you come from?” I wasn’t expecting an answer; Marcus only knew a few words. To my surprise, he dropped his fork, looked up, and raised both of his arms to the sky. Wow. “That prompted the next question, which Wayne had inspired me to ask: “What is God like?” Marcus looked directly into my eyes, and so simply and casually replied in his sweet angelic voice, “Light.” “At that moment, I understood that the little boy sitting next to me and the teeny baby in my belly were so much more than just their little bodies. They had souls that contained wisdom from beyond this earthly realm, which was far beyond my comprehension. If we just listen, I realized, they have so much to teach us all. “I shared this story with Wayne the next day, and he
encouraged me to write it down. I did so while sitting in the doctor’s office at one of my prenatal appointments. With my permission, Wayne posted the story on his Facebook page, inviting others to share their personal experiences as well. The responses and comments poured in, and that is how the idea for this book began.” From Wayne Dyer in Memories of Heaven: Each of the stories that appear in this first chapter are remembrances of little boys and girls who have not progressed far enough along this ego-dominated earthly plane to have a mind that is at war against itself. In essence, all of these children who give evidence of having memories of an existence prior to arriving here have quiet minds. Their minds are not filled with doubts, which lead to conflicts about what they feel inwardly versus what they’re being told by so many adults—who themselves have forgotten the eternal gentleness that once shone in their own quiet minds. A quiet mind is one that is willing to speak the truth that is felt internally. It is a mind that has not yet been conditioned to accept a reality that is being imposed upon it by wellmeaning adults and cultural and religious teachings. All of the offerings in this chapter came out of the mouths of young children, who appear to have a convincing knowledge about their existence prior to arriving here in this corporeal realm that we call reality. The statements offered here are a sampling of thousands of such comments that Dee and I received from parents and relatives from all over our planet. I have a quiet mind that has obviously done a lot of forgetting about my life prior to my birth, but it is a mind that is open to everything, a mind that does not fully grasp the idea of infinity yet is open to the idea that in an infinite universe, there is no room for beginnings and endings . . . infinite means always, and therefore there is an invisibleness within us all that is beginningless and endless. It is obviously not our physical form that I refer to here; it is that formless space within that can never die, and is never born. It is here where young children have the advantage. They speak their truth and recall their remembrances without any concern for what anyone else might think about it. For example, when she was a young child, my own daughter Serena while sleeping would literally converse in a language that was foreign to everyone in our family. She would offer recollections of her previous lives, and on one occasion informed my wife that “You are not my real mother. I have a real mother that I remember, but it’s not you.” I urge you to read these stories with a mind that is open to everything and attached to nothing. As you read, allow yourself to turn in peace to that memory of God, possibly still shining in your own quiet mind. *** One of the most profound and life-changing moments of my life came when my oldest son was eight years old. Sean had always been a sensitive child with wide eyes, —continued on page 19 www.LifeConnectionMagazine.com

From the Publisher from page 4 The supply of the raw material is what makes this attractive. The last figures I saw said San Diego City is now getting about 3% of its water from this source and the resources are there to enable them to meet half our requirements from pure water. Building that kind of infrastructure makes sense and, unless our bodies radically change, there is a reliable, predictable source of supply. Extending the line of thought that says use less, pay more, what’s coming next? When self-driving automobiles come in and there are fewer accidents, will people need as much auto insurance? If rapid transit becomes more rapid and people give up cars, will we need to subsidize insurance companies because people are not buying as much insurance? In a similar vein—and looking from a bigger perspective—I don’t think e-cars are the problem and costing us revenue. Aren’t our air and lungs more of a concern—and costly to fix too? That’s paying your fair share, I think. Just differently. Are we looking forward? In Germany traditional power plants are being retired because renewable energy sources are eliminating the need for them. Solar and wind energy— and conservation—supply what they need. Is the new tiered-rate system for electricity designed to support SDG&E and their shareholders? Or the stakeholders who are the source of SDG&E’s operating income? Who do these new rate structures support?
Something has to give, doesn’t it? And by something I don’t mean we should give a little more to entities that are providing less service or resources. Are we propping up structures that are becoming obsolete? Water is a little different—unless you look at it a little differently. Technology enables us to get our power more localized—from our rooftops. It’s the same with water! In addition to recycling waste, why aren’t we catching more water instead of saying OMG when it rains and floods—and then OMG when it doesn’t rain? There are other options. While we are looking at modernizing, have we studied what kind of infrastructure works best that’s also consistent with new technology? Oh, wait, Buckminster Fuller built a home in 1929 that was completely self-sufficient and self-contained. The essence of his approach was to accomplish more with less. He taught that the resources the planet provides is far greater than we need—and not scarce at all—when used wisely. Meanwhile, instead of looking at more efficient ways to do the same old things pretty much the same old way, don’t we really want to get back to 1929—get back to the future? Some shift is required, and the good news is that shift happens! And it’s not always about holding it together the same old way. Put another way, fertilizer happens, and this is a great time to grow new things. Your ideas—participation—are required. You’re the customer.

Uncomfortable When Others Cry? BY PENELOPE YOUNG ANDRADE, LCSW Do you get uncomfortable when someone is crying? For many being around tears feels very squirmy. You don’t know what to say or do so you stand there awkwardly hoping the emotions will go away. The crier is usually similarly embarrassed and apologizes while trying to quell the waterworks. The problem is that you’ve both missed a moment for heart warming, nerve calming, human connection. No blame. Only recently have neuroscientists realized emotions are essential to well-being for individuals and relationships. Crying is designed to release stress and bring people together for comfort. Our culture has been slow to catch up to this new understanding. Here’s the tip. First, see if you’re open to these new ideas about emotional expression. If yes, look inside for an example of crying leading to a happy ending. You may need to review life experiences or look to books/movies/ 16 | The Life Connection

YouTube. Next, notice what happens in your body as you envision someone being soothed while crying. Feel heart opening, shoulders loosening, gut gurgling release. If you’ve had bad experiences of emotions leading to trauma, you may need some professional help before you can relax into the simple ease of sharing brief, embodied emotional connection. Finally, consider this…you don’t have to do, fix, or change anything when tears flow. Your job is just to be there and wait for the healing that will naturally occur. You can prepare for this by practicing the following inner guidance: Nothing to do, No place to go. All is well. We’re here.. exists, because it’s actually a Mask. The root word of personality is ‘persona,’ which means ‘mask’ in Greek. We put so much energy into our social masks, and the irony is real joy resides in authenticity. What you are is the unchanging ESSENCE, behind the mask. I help people with this by restoring a sense of Wonder and Possibility through something I call The Remembrance Process, which takes people to a direct contact experience with themselves as Soul. Free to be. All the drama and suffering in our lives comes from a foundational assumption, an erroneous belief, seeing ourselves as ‘separate from’. This gives rise to the idea of being less than whole. Life is taking place INSIDE of You…

There is a place within ourselves we can come from which is a fount of giving. From here we have no neediness because we’ve trumped our needs in our concern for ‘others’. We’ve moved beyond the idea of personal. Cheerfulness replaces the need for approval or status, as we feel full from the giving and wholeness of connection.

Memories of Heaven from page 13
a heart as big as the sun, and a smile that could light up the room. I had been the type of mother who knew that I loved my son and took care of all his physical needs, but I always felt a missing connection—a bond I so desperately wanted yet didn’t know how to obtain. At the time, I didn’t have the spiritual or energetic awareness to define it; I simply knew that Sean could feel this missing bond. I tried to compensate by taking good care of him and showering him with affection, but I was overly controlling and angry. I didn’t want to be that way and tried not to be, but it’s like it had a life of its own. My controlling manner was on overdrive one particular day, and that evening when I tucked Sean into bed, he began to sob uncontrollably. As compassionately as I could, I asked him what was the matter, and he said that he wanted his mother in heaven. I inquired what he meant by that, and he told me that he just wanted to be with his mother in heaven and couldn’t take it being here. This began to scare me, but I gently asked him what his mother in heaven gave him that I didn’t. He said, “Pure love.” I could feel my heart begin to soften as I looked at my son in so much pain, missing something he so deserved, and there was no doubt in my mind that what he was telling me was real. As I continued to talk with him, he slowly began to tell me how his mother in heaven, along with God, told him to pick me for his earthly mother, and that

he remembered being inside me and it was dark. I asked Sean if he recalled what God looked like, and he described Him as a being of white light and full of love. I knew in this moment that Sean had just given me, and himself, a gift: a remembering from this little boy who wanted his mother to give him “pure love”! I knew he picked me as his mother to help me learn how to experience and express pure love and for him to receive it from me, his mother right now. This day began the journey of awakening the Divine mother in me right here on Earth! Robin Lisa Haywood, Union, Kentucky ********* Years ago when my three girls were little, I put the two youngest ones to bed, telling them to lie there quietly and go to sleep. Molly was five years old, and Caroline was not yet two at the time. More than an hour after I’d put them to bed, I heard giggling and talking coming from the bedroom, so I made my way to the back of the house to admonish them for not going to sleep. As I approached the bedroom, I stopped short when I heard Molly ask Caroline if she still remembered what it was like before she was born. “Yes,” replied Caroline. “I ’member picking Mommy, Daddy, Liana, and you! I could see you from up there! And I saw Grandma and Grandpa, too. They were smiling! I see’d everything!” “Oh yeah,” said Molly slowly. “Caroline, I’m starting to forget . . . ” “I know.” Both remained oddly quiet

and still for several moments after this, until Molly began making faces and acting silly, as she often did when trying to get her little sister to laugh and play. Maureen Suhadolnik, Springfield, Illinois ********* When my son Joseph was five, he broke his arm trying to fly off the top of his brother’s cot. I walked into the room to find Joseph crying, so I brought him up onto my knee for a cuddle and asked, “What’s wrong?” He just looked at me with wide eyes and asked, “Mum, when am I going to get my wings back?” When I explained that as a human he wouldn’t have wings but could fly kites and planes and so on, he burst into tears and wailed, “I want them right now!” All I could do was hug him. Then he gulped, suddenly stopped crying, looked straight into my eyes, and said, “That’s okay, Mum, I remember God told me I could have them when I returned after this assignment.” Then there’s my granddaughter, Phoebe. She was four when my mother died, and everyone had tried to explain to her why Nana Sue was sad. She climbed on my lap and asked, “Where’s Supernana?” I explained that she had died and gone to heaven. Phoebe said, “So she is with God and the angels?” I replied, “Yes.” She thought about it for a while and then climbed down, stood in front of me with her hands on her hips, and asked one final question: “So why are you still sad?” Even now when the grief occasionally arises, I hear this question and my granddaughter’s logic, and I am immediately

A few days later she again climbed on my lap. “I’m happy you’re not so sad now, Nana Sue,” she said. “’Cause you know even as we talk, Supernana might be getting ready to come back as a baby. You know, they call it a big word that starts with an ‘R.’” I said, “Reincarnation?” She replied, “That’s right, that’s what God said.” Susan Lovejoy, Coffs Harbor, New South Wales, Australia ********* I took my three young children to a children’s fair at the park. One of the activities was an art project in which paper was attached to record players that were spinning at low speeds, and children could select bottles of paint and squirt the paper as it went round and round. My threeyear-old son, David, chose yellow, blue, and orange, and created a beautiful sunburst. He handed it to me and said, “This is for you, Mom. This is me when I was sunshine with God before I was born.” This happened 21 years ago, and that sunburst still takes my breath away when I look at it. Linda Smith, Richland, Washington ********* My husband and I lost our first daughter, Beth, due to heart problems when she was almost three years old. Our third daughter, Amy, born five years after this, hadn’t been told about Beth. When she was about three and a half, we pulled out a video of Beth, and Amy said, “That’s my sister Beth! I knew her in heaven before I was born.” Paula Conroy, Gloucester City, New Jersey

********* My four-year-old used to talk about when he was in heaven before he was born, and when I asked him what it was like, he said it was all parks. Raina Thorsen, Staten Island, New York ********* When my son was very young, he told me about the “getting-born game.” He said that he and a few of his friends were in a big church up in the clouds before they were born. They were crawling in a circle around a hole in the floor, and the floor was made of clouds. There was beautiful music playing. Every now and then the music would stop, and one of the friends would go down the hole and get born. I didn’t take him to church when he was little, so this story was especially surprising to me. JoAnn Richmond Hinks mon, Hamberg, New Jersey When my daughter, Angelica, was close to 3 years old (she’s now 20), we were driving and just having a conversation. She said, “Mommy, I love you to the moon and back again,” which we said often to each other, so that wasn’t out of the ordinary. I was joking with her and asked if she’d ever been to the moon. She said no. I said, “That is a long way, like up in heaven—have you ever been to heaven?” She said yes. “You have? My mommy is in heaven, and I am sorry that you never got to meet her.” “Yes I did, Mommy.” “What do you mean?” Angelica said, “I saw her in heaven with God.” What my daughter said

sent chills up and down my body—just the way the conversation was so casual and sort of grown-up, yet how easily it came out of her mouth. I will never forget that day. Barb O’Rourke, Boca Raton, Florida
Chapter ending from Wayne Dyer:
“I suggest that you begin to view any of the young children in your life as new arrivals from heaven. Communicate with them by asking questions about their recollections. Above all, do not dismiss anything that they might say, regardless of how absurd it may sound to you. Make an effort to engage your children in conversation, and rather than perceiving yourself as their teacher, allow them to take
on that role with you. Be inquisitive and an active listener by drawing them out and taking a genuine interest in whatever they might offer. “Be aware that little ones, who are imparting those mysterious words that you might find difficult to grasp, speak their own unique truth. Let their honesty and excitement about these “weird” memories from heaven remind you that you too were once a small child, and that little child resides within you at all times. “It’s important to never dismiss or doubt these remembrances, and to keep in mind the famous observation of Mark Twain: ‘It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.’ ”
