Greetings

from the publisher I

What a Month It’s Been!

made a big mistake last month. At the end of the month when I was finishing the issue I took a look at what I wanted to do in August—what I wanted to explore then write about for September. I wrote out the plan and placed it in last issue for everyone to see. Then I started living August. Somewhere along the line I remembered the expression about how we write down our plans and then God laughs. That was kind of what it was like—and more. I was feeling a little frustrated for not getting to the things I wanted to and was home walking past a bookcase when one of the books jumped out at me. I looked at the title and thought “naw” and picked up the book next to it. After a moment or two I knew I wanted to go to the first book that attracted me. That book was The Poet’s Guide to Life: The Wisdom of Rilke (Rainer Maria Rilke) edited and translated by Ulrich Baer. I’m guessing that you know what’s coming next, but—no fooling—here’s the passage I opened and read. “How numerous and manifold is everything that is yet to come, and how differently it all surfaces and how differently it all passes from the way we expect. How poor we are in imagination, fantasy, and expectation, how lightly and superficially we take ourselves in making plans, only for reality then to arrive and play melodies on us.” I don’t think this is what Shakespeare meant by “well played,” but at times that fits. The previous paragraph in the Rilke book said: “Life has been created quite truthfully in order to surprise us (where it does not terrify us all together).” Yes, it is scary sometimes—especially when you look at our larger world. Our own small worlds can get unpredictable, uncomfortable and scary too sometimes.

I remember someone asking me how I was doing and what came up was the beginning of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” When I look at how I’m doing, I’ve often thought it just depends on what direction I look. I knew “feeling good” wasn’t always determined by the things and circumstances surrounding me—or how national and world events were unfolding. I know I can also just feel good—at times. Overall it seemed like a typical month, filled with expectations and good news and bad news. It was also obvious that pushing in the direction I said I wanted to go wasn’t working. I wanted to write about how the electric rates would be changing. A lot has been said about solar not being a good investment, but I don’t see it that way. The direction that the utilities want to go does not make sense from many perspectives. I planned on researching that and the new rate system. Life wasn’t going that way. What did happen was a lot of things that I have needed to address for years. Brian Carrell, a friend, a coworker in another setting and a computer expert moved from Toronto to the Vista area. He was actually the person who sat down with me in the mid-80s and introduced me to PageMaker version 1.1. PageMaker was one of the first applications to allow people to do desktop publishing. We were among the first publications to use it. I’d write the articles and then go to PB and we’d get the files ready on a MacPlus. A few years later he introduced us to FileMaker to keep track of our records. He’s dropped in several times over the years. In August he contacted me and —continued on page 21

Current News New Mural Commemorates Cecil the Lion

Carlsbad restaurant owner Mayur Pavagadhi had an empty wall outside his 83 Degrees Restaurant (near Carlsbad Village Dr. and Roosevelt St.) and wanted to call attention to the plight of wild animals in Africa. So he contacted and commissioned Ron Juncal at Studio 2 Artists to do something about it. The result was a mural paying tribute to Cecil the lion. While a lot of people like it, Pavagadhi is also receiving criticism for it. We’re running this to show our appreciation and support of this beautiful tribute to Cecil. —photo by Jessica Luibrand.

the same name by Paola di Florio and Lisa Leeman, was scheduled to be released on September 1 by the SelfRealization Fellowship. The New York Times wrote the film was “compelling… enough to make a modern soul look inwards.” AWAKE delves further into the story of Paramahansa Yogananda, author of the best-selling spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi, who is credited with bringing the ancient tradition of yoga meditation to the West. An intimate account of Paramahansa Yogananda’s personal journey in the West during a time of upheaval and change, AWAKE explores the stories of Yogananda’s childhood and spiritual training in India; his historic arrival in the U.S.; the challenges he encountered with racism and yellow journalism while teaching Western audiences; the betrayals he confronted; his breakthrough teachings on the link between science and spirituality, and the universality of religion; and the recognition he ultimately received for his pioneering role as the father of Yoga in the West. The 288-page book contains rare archival images of Paramahansa Yogananda—over 400 images—as well as behind-the-scenes commentary and full script of the movie. AWAKE will be available in bookstores and online. yogananda-srf.org

A Look at the Future of Medicine The World Summit of Integrative Medicine 2015 is an information-packed 7-day allonline video event with 49 groundbreaking lectures on “Creative Innovations in Health Care” that you can view for free. Some of the top minds and world-renowned speakers in the field of Integrative Medicine are featured through live broadcasts, videos on-demand, online chat rooms and attendee hangouts, virtual exhibitor booths, and additional bonus media. Participants can also enter and vote in the exclusive “Health Innovator” Speaker Competition. It’s a unique opportunity for innovative healthcare education. The inspiration for the World Summit of Integrative Medicine (WSIM) comes from Dr. Paul Drouin, a Canadian MD, Homepath and acupuncturist who is President and Founder of the International Quantum University for Integrative Medicine (IQUIM). Addressing his vision, Dr. Drouin stated in his book Creative Integrative Medicine: “The tree of medicine must be transplanted into new soil, where its roots can deepen and intertwine to reach a more complex source of healing knowledge and bring together all traditions of healing, ancient and modern.” The concept of Creative Integrative Medicine is to “redesign the medical curriculum based upon an updated model of science defined by the premises of quantum physics that allows modern medicine to blossom now in a new multidimensional model of healing open to the full potentiality of the individual.” The World Summit Of Integrative Medicine 2015 responds to the urgency to gather together around this new perception of reality that will reveal the infinite potentiality of human beings. The Summit showcases renowned speakers, doctors, scientists, and researchers aligned with this profound and more humanistic vision of the reality: Dr. Amit Goswami, Nassim Haramein, Dr. Lissa Rankin, Dr. 8 | The Life Connection

The “Health Innovator” Competition is like the television show,“ American Idol”, and the winner will be determined with the following criteria: • Quality of Audio and Video - Research/ Studies/Structure/References/Historical Information, -Relationship to the Principles of Quantum Physics and the Theme of the Summit: Innovation, Creativity, and Originality of the best innovation in health care of the year. • There will also be an opportunity for attendees to vote for their favorite speakers. The competitors with more votes will have a better chance of becoming Speakers at the World Summit 2015. These winners then will be eligible to compete for the top award, an opportunity to become faculty and produce a 4-hour course for Quantum University. WSIM is also recognizing that there are already innovations in the health market that are in alignment with the vision of the Summit. A selected group of Sponsors will be presenting exciting innovations in health care: products, technology, and services related to Holistic, Natural and Integrative Medicine. There are two ways to attend the Summit. You can sign up for free, or open the door to additional speakers and features for $50. An easy way to find out more is to visit www. Acoustic Sound Therapy is the art and science of exposing the physical and subtle bodies to acoustic sound vibration. When body(ies) are exposed to this vibration, all organs and systems from the skin to muscles, joints, organs, cells and DNA are harmonized, revitalized and re-calibrated to a more optimal state. This has a deeply relaxing, restoring and grounding effect which can result in relief from injury and disease. The vibration from the overtones played quiets and expands the body-mind by stimulating the electro-magnetic field. This is a magic journey- transformational on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level. Color Light Therapy is the art and science of addressing dis-harmonies with colored light. The Promise of

Human Potential “ By Daryl Auclair, The Health Optimizing Institute

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.” — The Dalai Lama

O

ur founder, David Harris, would have just about bet his life that the biggest thing going by the year 2000 would be the Human Potential Movement. He would have lost. Now, he predicts the Human Potential Movement will be the biggest thing going by the year 2020, and I am betting my life on it, and so are you, most likely without knowing it. The promise of the Human Potential Movement that birthed out of Humanistic and Transpersonal Psychology was to free us to have the greatest wealth on our planet: our untapped, personal potential. You will find that if we do not acknowledge our vast, untapped potential, we are missing out on 90% of our lives and the ability to stay in evolution. Those alive now are the deciders—to choose whether there will be a livable future or any future at all. The Behavioral Scientists developed amazingly powerful programs to free our potential. In our early programs at the University of California, San Diego, and San Diego State University, we trained hundreds of facilitators in our Developing Personal Potential Program. Our purpose was to create, find and develop the most effective programs for releasing positive potential. However, we could not sustain the release of potential in participants, so we thought our programs did not work. The programs did in fact work, but when participants returned back to their old environments, they were pulled back to their old habits. We discovered that we need a sup10 | The Life Connection

port group. Write down the five people you spend the most time with. This is your support group. What if you had a soul team, tribe or family of authentic friends who are awakening, enlightened beings focused on empowering each other? You will be able to have this and the opportunity to give this greatest gift of our most desired and needed match making support. For ongoing support the Health Optimizing Institute and the Mandala Society will be launching Evolving Enrichment Circles for living our ultimate life adventure and winning— before you get there. We focus on living in the winning process in our groups, and know that the best way to be empowered is to be an empowerer. You will find the value of this as soon as you are in your support group. Some say it is worth everything! We will all be able to offer this greatest gift of Evolving Enrichment Circles and many will create a new profession with this ongoing bonding process for ultimate, sustainable matchmaking. When we feel really good about ourselves, we can release a lot of potential. When we do not feel very good about ourselves, we cannot release much of our potential. So when we are consciously or subconsciously feeling like victims or innocent by-standers to the systems that are destroying us, how good can we feel about ourselves? About 2%? Dr. Abraham Maslow told our founder that we are only using about 2% of our potential. This means we are all

just muddling through, with the wealthiest of us muddling through in style. How good can we feel about ourselves when consciously or subconsciously we feel like victims or innocent bystanders to the systems that are destroying us? Perhaps about 2% good about ourselves, thus Maslow was right when he said that we only use about 2% of our potential. Now, with this awareness, I can easily double my joy, pleasure and fulfillment in life. All I need to do is free 2% more of my potential. When we are in our Evolving Enrichment Circles we know we are no longer victims or innocent bystanders. Our support groups move us from our unsustainable, conflict and scarcity, role-playing, thing-focused, getting society to our cooperation and abundance, authentic, relationship-focused, giving society that is sustainable. We are always in a process, so our victory is staying in the winning process. This will become obvious right away in your support group. We are no longer victims or innocent bystanders to the systems that are ending humanity, for we know we are creating our wisdom world by living it. See www.hoisd.org

Revelation that Birthed Mandala

The Founder’s Revelation was an experience beyond thoughts or words. It was an experience showing that all in existence is a form of intelligent energy, and the force is the source attraction to come together, communicate, cooperate and create more dynamic life expression. If this were not true, there would be total chaos within and without. “Calling this force ‘essence unconditional love’ is the closest thought to describe it, and only a minute clue in relation to the actual experience: that all of existence is energy in relationship and our most important relationship is with The Supreme Creative Life Force of All Creation, with which we are all ONE. This Relationship is so Personal, Sacred and Intimate that it is vital for each of us to have our own Personal Religion.” – David J. Harris

History of The Mandala Society Vision

The name Mandala was chosen as our sacred name and symbol, as this infinite art form expresses our total relationship to all of existence. This holistic sacred art form is found in every culture. As a result of his revelation in 1963 that birthed The Mandala Society, our founder, David J. Harris also created Mandala Holistic Health, Mandala Open Circle and The Health Optimizing Institute, which included creating the first Holistic Health Conferences that were ever presented along with a medical school. This was at the University of California, San Diego, beginning in 1975 and continuing for ten years. Every year, about 3,000 health professionals and educators participated in a conference each summer. Every conference included over twenty workshops focused on the

many different aspects of holistic health. These conferences supported creating The Association for Holistic Health in 1976, The Holistic Medical Association in 1978 and The American Holistic Nurses Association in 1981. The founder’s revelation also created the first National Holistic Education Conference with UCSD, in 1979 and the National Center for the Exploration of Human Potential in 1968. In 1992, our founder changed the name to: The Health Optimizing Institute.

The world is my country and to do Good is my Religion.” –Thomas Paine Gifts of Mandala

Mandala optimizes the opportunity for each individual to experience and express their own Divine Being Self. This is provided in Evolving Enrichment Circles for living our authentic selves by freeing our vast, untapped, personal potential. This is about Authentic Community, providing active support to have our Soul Teams, Tribes and Families living our highest, loving truth. “In and through community lies the salvation of the world; nothing is more important. Yet it is virtually impossible to describe Community to someone who has never experienced it – and most of us have never had an experience of true community. Still the attempt must be made, for the human race today stands at the brink of self-annihilation.” – M. Scott Peck

Chronicle of Holistic Health

The Journals of Holistic Health came out of the Mandala conferences and contain contributions from over 160 prominent leaders supporting what is now acknowledged as responsible health care. Unlimited Possibilities – STORIES OF FUTURE PAST By Roger Cavnaugh, PhD We are storytellers. What we know of ourselves from the most ancient of times up to this day always comes to us as stories. Whether carved in stone, painted on cave walls, pressed into clay tablets, performed on a stage, drawn on papyrus, sung by choir in a humble church or in the nave of a great cathedral, published in a scientific journal, written on scrolls or flashing across the screens of smart phones, TVs and computers, our most common understandings of who we are and our most elevated self -knowledge draws from the stories we tell ourselves. Some would say those stories have been dictated by God or by those chosen by Divinity to bring the Truth to humankind, others feel their stories are simply reflections as they hold a mirror to Life or themselves, still others that they are inspired by the poetic muses and goddesses of the arts; and while many today claim their stories are simply the indisputable rational interpretation of the evidence before us, more than a few claim the stories just write themselves. We give those stories authority according to who we say told them, how much in accord they seem to be with what we believe is real, how much they resonate with the common human experiences they evoke, and their effectiveness in giving shape to our yet unexpressed hopes and dreams. Last month I suggested that we downplay our essential power of imagination as the foundation of what we create; in effect, that we all too often ignore our role as story tellers who imagine innumerable versions of ourselves and so then create realities consistent with who we say we are. Bruce Lipton’s headline article in last month’s TLC asked if humans have superpowers, proposing that if we consider the stories he told of extraordinary human feats as examples of what we can do if we change our story, we would gain more confidence to face what appears to be our insignificance in the face of overwhelming global crisis. Perhaps we can think of spiritual understanding as the most expansive and inclusive story we tell; and our belief about who we are as the key question that science, religion and philosophy, as well as spiritual systems, attempt to answer. As we work towards a response that is adequate to our times and the opportunities before us, we hear around us from many sides that the inner spiritual presence that presses us forward has a heart centered character that emphasizes slowing down to deeply appreciate the gift of Life, having still and silent times to get to know ourselves as the Gift, and the openness to realize that kindness and 12 | The Life Connection

compassion are essential attributes of who we are as the One. Here’s an old story we all once knew well but may have by now forgotten. It speaks to what we now know about the power of the One Heart and comes from quite long ago. It was said to have happened some years after the Time of Happy Troubles, that, as you remember well, followed the Crisis of 2018. It happened first they say in a small town, which like the rest of us, was at that time struggling with an uncertain food supply. Just as in the larger cities, the local authorities, following the instructions of the region’s general assembly, had taken an accounting of what was available and were making sure that everyone shared so that no one did without. Some neighbors had noticed an elderly couple seemed to often have food that others did not; and so the sheriff was sent to investigate to see if there was hoarding or some other violation of strict and necessary policies that were keeping everyone with at least a minimum of sustenance. The old couple was polite and cooperative as the sheriff diligently searched their home only to find nothing suspicious. Invited to stay for lunch, the sheriff gladly accepted the invitation, thinking that the elderly couple might expose some manipulation on their part. Before eating the few crackers and a handful of raisins that was put out for the meal, the old couple insisted the sheriff join them in saying grace by holding hands with them, and with closed eyes blessing and appreciating what they had. Although impatient at the very long silence that followed the old couple’s prayer, the sheriff played along, only opening his eyes when told. As he did so he was astonished to see that along with what had been already put out on the table there were a few grapes and several plums that had not been there before. No matter what the sheriff said and no matter how forcefully he tried to discover some trickery, he could not shake the old couple’s story that this was not their doing. Warning them that he would come again, the sheriff returned home where he told what happened to his wife. She listened carefully and suggested they return together to better understand what had occurred. And a day later, they did just that. After another exhaustive search in an attempt to find something amiss, the sheriff, along with his wife, were again invited to a very modest meal. Just as before the elderly couple insisted upon sitting silently together, holding hands with closed eyes in gratitude. And, just as before, when eyes were opened on the table was food that had not been there previously. The sheriff and his wife were astonished to see a large pineapple and other fruit that not only was not in season, but also had not been seen at all for many months. Well, the rest, as they say, is history; and as we look back on the 21st century, it’s helpful to remember that we once lived in ignorance;

forgetful that we are the authors of the fictions we create to help us know ourselves as the One Heart. Next issue, let’s look at the myth of Eden.

Solution To Our Worldwide Terrorist Problems by Steve Schechter, NP, HHP

According to the U.S. Department Of Defense (DOD), the Pentagon, the number one terrorist problem facing the U.S., and the entire world, is climate change and other environmental threats. One solution: we could move to another planet once we’re done completely destroying earth. All we have to do is select 100,000 healthy people, plants, and animals from all the world’s population and develop a super Noah’s Ark spaceship that can explore the universe in search of a similar hospitable planet with a similar sun, water, soil, . . . Yeah right. Oops, nothing available within 500 light years, no practical Noah’s Ark, and other problems with this “Plan B.” Or, maybe we can change, heal, & repair what we are doing here on our home planet. If you attend any climate change protest or environmental rally these days, you’re bound to see a sign that reads, “There is no planet B.” Even UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has adopted the slogan. “This is our planet Earth. This is a very small planet, if we consider the vastness of the universe,” he told an audience at Climate Week in New York City last year. “There is no plan B, because we do not have a planet B.”

It’s self-evident that the solution to man-made climate change is not packing ourselves into a space ship and heading off to colonize far-away galaxies. Curbing carbon pollution and developing low-carbon energy sources are the generally agreed-upon solutions to help slow global warming. We need to help one another—people, businesses, mega corporations, politicians, governments—to learn to “Live As If The Future Matters.” In 1978, while directing the Austin (Texas) Life Center, I wrote a pamphlet entitled “Developing Harmony Consciousness & Actions.” It contained many suggestions relating to what we now call Sustainability and Restoring Environmental Health. Now, the time has come to go beyond suggestions and encourage urgency. Yes, there is still time if we make a strong commitment. One of the many reasons that I have long appreciated Steve Hays and The Life Connection (TLC) is the long-standing emphasis of integrating progressive politics with sustainability and earth consciousness. Additionally, the TLC Director of Expansion, Amelia Leigh Hall, also rightfully promotes Harmony Development. We need to develop, and especially act on, what I call —continued on page 19

To date, Playing for Change Foundation has created twelve music schools and programs in Bangladesh, Brazil, Ghana, Mali, Nepal, Rwanda, South Africa, Thailand and the United Sates. “Harmony Consciousness.” Yes, all of us (U.S.) can work together to enact more sustainable practices, build more community, more sustainable economics, and more representative politics rather than the current corporate dark money control. There are many, many organizations, some politicians, and some companies that are working to heal and transform our society that deserve our ardent support. To name a few to help you get started and connected: Sierra Club, Climate Change, National Resource Defense Council (NRDC), MoveOn.Org, and the Network of Spiritual Progressives. I believe that Public Financing of political campaigns (with limits) itself would produce great benefits. To put everything in balance is good, to put everything in harmony is better. Rev. Dr. Roxie Hart

told me he would be starting a job soon, but had some time before that and asked me what I needed. A few days before that I had been thinking about some of the software and files I had on my oldest computer. I wondered what I would do if that computer died and how—and if—it could be upgraded. Did I get my new rainwater collection system in as I planned? No, but how about getting/designing a better email system or phone/message system? We’re—well, he’s—revising how my computers are setup and interact in a way I can’t even really explain. It’s not complete. It’s in process, but we’ve made a lot of progress. Just getting a clearer vision of what can be done has been a major shift for me. Thank you, Brian! On the one hand I could look at the many things going

on and say, again, it was the good news bad news. Didn’t get done what I said I wanted at first, but things are getting done that I’ve needed done. Ultimately, however, I came to see that differently. What jumped out at me was that the changes that came, the computer/office changes and others too, were unexpected, wanted, and ultimately served the purpose I wanted in a better way than I could predict, as Rilke said. They were things the magazine needed to be more efficient and grow. It was more needed that the path I was on. I’ve noticed that more than once through the years. As it turns out, the issue I planned to research and write about became a nonissue right before I went to press. The PUC denied SDG&E’s rate change. These changes were a gift for several reasons. I saw I was relieved when the PUC acted. I really wanted to focus on other solar power issues—ones I am more passionate about. It just seemed that rates should be addressed first. The PUC did so I don’t need to in the detail I was planning. I saw that process over and over during the month. The way Rilke put it was this: “It is, after all, one strength within the human with which we achieve everything, a single steadfastness and pure direction of the heart. Whoever possesses that strength ought not to lose himself to fear.” Passion is an expression of the heart, right? Staying the course and not giving into second-guessing, uncertainties or fears is a broad subject. Rilke gets into that

too and I highly recommend his book. Put briefly, Rilke reminded me of another teaching I heard that suggested that we can only really look in the direction we want to go—follow that passion and participate the best way we know how—and then watch how and what the universe brings to us. Rilke gets into that a lot, and basically says we want to judge what comes in as being good or bad—but can’t because what’s there is always there for a purpose, if we could see it. And no need to worry about finding the meaning. Patience brings it. There was a lot of giving up control this month and it was relaxing to remember that no matter what I think at the time—things are working out. I just don’t see it yet. I prefer that more that “good news, bad news” thinking. I also wondered, however, if Bob Dylan didn’t say it all back in the late sixties in his song, “My Back Pages.” “Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats too noble to neglect, Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect Good and bad, I define these terms quite clear, no doubt, somehow, Ah, but I was so much older then I’m younger than that now.” We all have some form of back pages, don’t we? I won’t give you my usual “have a great month” this time. Enjoy. What comes is meant to be a surprise that fits, not terrorize.
