Welcome... … to the winter issue of Life in the Village, the final one of 2015. We’ve had a fantastic response to the changes we’ve made over the last twelve months and I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the inspiring individuals, businesses and organisations who have supported us - in print, online and on twitter. I hope 2015 has been kind to you. For me, it’s been a year of real drama and challenge and never have I felt more fortunate to live as part of a supportive community in this lovely, peaceful part of the world. Life in the Village aims to reflect and support that community, offering you easy ways to access information on country living, locally. As always, this issue, we share useful contacts, expert advice and local stories plus three fantastic competitions and a range of money saving offers. Don’t forget, you can access the magazines wherever you are by visiting our website www.lifeinthevillage.co.uk. It’s quick and easy to try your luck at winning a prize and you can download a voucher pack with offers from our four magazines. This winter, we’ll be working on new ideas to keep our offering fresh so stay updated on twitter and look out for your next printed magazine late in February. Meanwhile, I wish you a Merry Christmas and all good wishes for the New Year,

Winter on the

WATER

Winter is the perfect time to go duck-spotting. It might feel chilly to us but for many wildfowl it’s a summer holiday. Wendy Carter of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust offers a beginner’s guide.

They can often be seen in Walking on lonesome windswept close-knit groups or flying in tight beaches is just part of the fun; I formations over wetlands. also seek out the flocks of wading Males are particularly striking; birds and wildfowl that travel here medium sized with a round from Scandinavia, Siberia and the chestnut head, they have a yellow Arctic for some respite from the forehead, pinky breast and white biting cold. Really, though, it’s patches on their wings which show just an excuse to enjoy a get-a-way when they fly – plus they whistle! from the pre-Christmas madness Even more impressive is that some because there are plenty of places of the Wigeon that spend the to duck-spot locally if you know colder months in Worcestershire where to look. have flown some 5,000km from Russia to be here. Spot Wigeon over Wetlands I’m not just a sucker for a Ducks on Worcestershire Waters Teal are the UK’s smallest ducks handsome face; I love the sounds too. When we say ‘duck’, most of with chestnut heads, beautiful green eye stripes and black edges us are actually referring to mallards but there are many ducks to their yellow tails. Shovelers have distinctive spatulate bills and they don’t all say ‘quack’! One of my favourite is Wigeon. which they sweep back and forth through the water, filtering out A common dabbling duck, this 12

small invertebrates, plant seeds and other plant matter. Pintails are probably the smartest duck on the block but are only present in small numbers locally as they rarely breed in Britain. Easily distinguished by their long, pointed tail feathers, they also have a long, graceful neck. Although they mainly eat plant food, during the breeding season they will supplement their diet with insects and molluscs. Colourful Mandarin Ducks are now naturalised on a number of Worcestershire’s waterways – their numbers might not be swelled by migrants at this time of year but their bright plumage makes them a little more conspicuous – check out some of the brooks around Evesham. These beautiful, unmistakeable creatures were introduced into collections from the Far East, where they can still be found in China, Japan, Korea and parts of Russia. They either escaped, or were deliberately released, from captivity.

Mandarin Ducks are actually quite shy birds, often hiding beneath overhanging trees and usually only forming small flocks. Males have elaborate plumage with orange plumes on their cheeks, orange 'sails' on their back and pale orange sides. The female of this little duck is dull in comparison, with a grey head, brown back and white eyestripe.

Pochard and Coot, they feed on waterweed, plant seeds and aquatic invertebrates. You’ll find them on numerous lakes throughout the county but head to bigger lakes or the Avon, Teme or Severn and you may just spot a rarer Worcestershire duck – the Goosander! As members of the Sawbill family, the long, serrated bills of the goosander make them look a little different to most other ducks. Slender, streamlined Find Divers in Deeper Waters The above are all dabbling ducks birds, they are perfectly shaped - they feed at the surface rather for swimming after fish and their than diving for their food so tiny saw-like 'teeth' are well you’ll often see their bottoms designed for gripping slippery sticking in the air - but seek out food. Goosanders are gregarious deeper water and you’ll find birds, forming flocks of divers too. thousands in some parts of the Tufted Ducks are probably our UK. DUCKS AT A GLANCE Goosander The male has a dark green head, a black back and a long, red bill with a hook at the tip. The female is grey with a gingery or rufous brown head and a white throat. Mandarin Duck Look for elaborate orange plumes. Pintail Distinct for its long pointed tail feathers and graceful neck. Shovelers Umistakeable for its long, broad 'shovel' of a bill. Teal Both sexes show a bright green wing patch in flight. Tufted Ducks The female is entirely chocolatebrown, while the male is black with white flanks & a tufted head. Wigeon Look for a pink breast, chestnut head, yellow forehead and obvious white wing patches which show when they fly.

so we are working with partners to protect what remains and create new areas for ducks in the future. Today, one of the best places to see many of these species is our Upton Warren Nature Reserve between Bromsgrove and Droitwich Spa. But if you’d prefer to stay local, you’ll spot some of them on the Avon and its various tributaries around the Vale and Bredon as well as on lakes and pools around our area. If we get a wet winter, some of the best places to duck-spot are soggy and flooded fields – the water floats many invertebrates to the surface and to the edges of fields; perfect for the dabblers!

SUBLIME SPIRIT

GRAHAM

Inspired by paintings from time periods past and the strong, confident women who often sat for them, the new autumn/winter hair and make-up collection from Aveda is opulent, edgy and sophisticated. Graham West suggests how to make it work for you.

S

trong on glamour, each look in Aveda’s new Sublime Spirit collection is a beautiful portrait come to life. Shot in London, this season’s looks have an air of sophistication peppered with an eccentric and modern twist. Style comes in every form - from opulent curls and mini ringlets to grand towering up-do’s and 1920’s inspired waves with a crushed pink velvet effect. Mosaics of shimmering gold and copper, rich deep plum, and melts of icy pastel put a fresh spin on iconic looks. Twice a year, the team here visits The Aveda Institute for an intensive two days of inspiration and training in the new collection. Last month, working with Aveda’s Creative Directors, we had fun recreating the looks from New York Fashion Week. It’s part of an ongoing programme of staff development in which we are constantly investing,

Book your

enabling us to offer the latest techniques available. In 2014/15 the team attended 20 different training courses to extend our knowledge across cutting, colour and make-up. One of the key things we are always working on is how to translate what we have learnt into workable looks for clients. It’s all about taking elements of each collection and making it work for you. That might mean swapping the product you use or changing the way you wear your fringe. Evolving your hair colour is another way to keep your style current. Team that with a deep, glossy lipstick or a luminous eye colour from the natural make-up collection and you have a fresh new palette for winter. Lots of clients visit the salon and ‘interview’ us before we touch their hair. Call 01386 860 361 to book your complimentary consultation.

The key to

Long term Prosperity Many of us fantasise about getting rich quick but what is the best route to long term prosperity? Local Independent Financial Advisor, Paul Urmston, offers a suggestion.

Achieving peace of mind We all love stories of people who win the lottery or find a priceless antique in the attic but for most of us seeking a comfortable lifestyle the mundane truth is that longterm investments bring long-term rewards. My primary motivation stems from helping clients plan towards financial stability, contentment and peace of mind – something that can only really be achieved through long term Why Choose an Independent Financial Advisor? Independent research suggests that independence is a deciding factor when it comes to choosing a financial advisor. Being independent means that an IFA can advise from right across the market unlike a restricted adviser, who will, as the name suggests be ’restricted’ to limited types of products or providers. 2plan wealth management is absolutely committed to independence and prides itself on transparency. 2plan wealth management Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. It is entered on the Financial Service Register (www.fca.org.uk) under reference 461598. Registered office: 2plan wealth management Ltd, 3rd Floor, Bridgewater Place, Water Lane, Leeds, LS11 5BZ. planning and careful investment. How to invest wisely Asset allocation is an investment strategy that balances risk and reward by carefully allocating your assets. The four main asset classes - equities, fixed-interest, property and cash - have different levels of risk and return, so tend to behave differently over time. How I plan asset allocation with each client depends on their goals, attitude to risk and investment horizon. 2plan strongly believes that a well thought out, sensible asset allocation plan, designed to suit your individual needs, will serve you best in the long-term. If you are comfortable with the stock market it can be tempting to

dip in and out of stocks but the truth is that you are unlikely to be able to enter and exit the market at the right moments. The 2plan approach is to stay invested and diversify your investments to mitigate against the inevitable ups and downs. Be sure to keep your investment horizon in mind and remember that long term investors should not be deterred by short term declines. History clearly demonstrates that, over the long term, a well-diversified portfolio should create a positive return above the rate of inflation. To find out more please call 01905 421196 to arrange an initial meeting at my expense.

Take a look at some of the latest designs and you will find that slimline technology and intelligent detailing have created a superb range available in both aluminium and upvc. Increased roof strength has opened up new design alternatives and there are various roof construction options to provide an impressive look for any style of property. The best roof lanterns on the market today give unrivalled results compared to the past. Thin, strong and light, there are no clunky bars or supports cluttering the ridge. No thick, chunky profiles dominating the glazing. Extra strong rafters mean the tie bars can be set high, guaranteeing excellent headroom and a wonderful feeling of clear, free space to your living area. A choice of hidden, rafter or rod tie supports provides the ultimate luxury and flexibility to create the roof you want. From the

Special Offer: Buy any hot drink, get one free at Cotteswold Coffee @ The Roses Offer ends 29 Feb

With Caroline Lawrence from The Roses in Tewkesbury Few of us could have imagined, back in January, that within just a few short months we would have not only fundraised for, but completed a total refurbishment of our building. It’s been in the pipeline for many years, but as the building approached its 40th birthday we decided that there was no better time to bite the bullet and make it happen. So, 12 months ago, the appeal was launched, and none of us could have predicted the level of support we gained from trusts, businesses and individuals. The short timescale of our project has surprised many people. Because we were determined not to undertake work that we hadn’t already raised the money for, the final decision to go ahead with the redevelopment wasn’t made until June - when our finances

were secured. Two weeks later our contractors moved in, and worked flat out all summer to bring the results you see today. The project hasn’t been without its challenges, of course. But one thing I’ve noticed is that my colleagues are the most indefatigable group of people I’ve ever met. I include our amazing contractors Matthews Construction, architects Poole Phillips Associates and project manager David Beidas among that number. No problem has been too big, and I’ve witnessed some truly ingenious solutions to problems we didn’t know we were going to have! By the time September came, the project was almost complete. In order to reopen as planned on 24 September, our builders worked in shifts around the clock. The final week before reopening was a blur - everyone got involved. I’ve never known an environment to buzz in quite the way ours did that week.

When we opened our doors at 6pm on Thursday 24 September and saw the reaction from our sell out audience, all of the hard work instantly became worth it. The refurbishment of The Roses represents far more than merely a superficial makeover of a building. We have made changes that will sustain The Roses for many decades, and it’s our hope that these improvements will encourage many more people to use the building, not just to see a film or a show, but as a place to come and relax, meet friends over lunch, or simply unwind over a coffee. We hope that next time you’re in Tewkesbury you will call in and see the transformation for yourself - we’d love to know what you think. Why not tweet us your thoughts @rosestheatre?

atient health, safety and comfort are our top priorities at Folly Gardens and I’m pleased to introduce new member of the team, vet Joe Binfield, who is helping us develop new choices for you. Prior to joining us on back on home turf in Gloucestershire, Joe spent five years working in a busy clinic of 25 vets in Newbury. A keen rugby player, he trained at the Royal Veterinary College, London and is now completing a postgraduate Certificate in Soft Tissue and Orthopaedic Surgery alongside his full time work. This further study requires a huge commitment, involving 400 hours of learning over three to five years. It reflects Joe’s interest in hind limb lameness,

Vet Joe Binfield

Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens, Tewkesbury and Bishop’s Cleeve introduces new vet Joe Binfield plus a new service, keyhole surgery. NEW! fracture repair and arthritis, enabling Folly Gardens to continue to offer the very best for your pet. Joe’s appointment comes at an opportune time for our team because as part of our ongoing programme of investment, we are now one of the first clinics locally to offer your pet the option of keyhole surgery. Laparoscopic (or keyhole) surgery has been the preferred options for many forms of human surgery for some years now. The technique of making two or three tiny access wounds and using a camera and fine, specialist instruments to neuter, take biopsies or perform exploratory surgery to assist a diagnosis, is much less invasive than open surgery. Patient pain is lessened, wound healing is accelerated and the risk of infection is reduced. This means more procedures can be done as day cases and usually, animals will recover more quickly. To find out more about the benefits of keyhole surgery, especially when spaying, please call us on 01684 292244 or 01242 679880. Wishing you and your pet well,

LETTING property

Do you have an inheritance or a pension pot and want to improve your return? Anne Horton, Manager of the Tewkesbury CGT office helps you assess whether buy to let could be an option.

T

he local rental market is thriving but if you are considering buying a property to let there are several factors to weigh up for maximum success.  The amount you wish to invest. This will determine whether you will be able to buy outright or may require a Buy to Let Mortgage.  The return you expect. To work out gross return, multiply the annual rent and divide by the purchase price, i.e. £9,000 a year rent divided by a purchase price of say £150,000 would give you a gross yield of 6% which is far better than saving rates currently. Also, there are tax advantages such as offsetting your mortgage interest against income, agent’s fee, legal and maintenance costs. Plus, capital values are rising so it’s a win win situation.  The type of property you want to buy. A flat may be more secure and

easier to maintain but any service charges need to be taken into account when thinking about your yield. If you prefer a house, how many bedrooms do you want? A two bed can be let to the widest market including a single person, two friends sharing, a young couple or a small family.  The variables of the local market. Browse websites to acquaint yourself with the value of different types of property and visit estate agents to collect details of the kind you would like to buy. Remember CGT is happy to offer you a free independent rental valuation .  Maintenance. How much upkeep is needed on the property? Will you able to manage this yourself or will you need to use contractors? It’s important for the property to be in good, clean, modern order to

attract tenants who will stay longer and achieve better rents.  Furniture. Are you going to furnish the property or not? There are tax advantages to furnishing. However, your furniture may not be looked after as well as you would care for it and you will be responsible for replacing items if they go wrong. When you purchase a property it’s wise to use an ARLA regulated agent, familiar with the current legislation. It can seem daunting but our friendly team are trained, experienced professionals who will help you. Call me on 01684 850350 to find out more about our packages including rent guarantee and legal protection for your peace of mind.

Caramel Heaven

Sweet, aromatic muscovado sugar creates a comforting dessert that often features on the menu at Belle House, Pershore

Sticky Toffee Pudding INGREDIENTS STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING 60g Unsalted Butter (soft) 150g Dark Muscovado Sugar 2 Eggs 180g Plain Flour 1tsp Bicarbonate of soda 1 tsp Baking Powder 150g Dates (pitted) 150ml Water

INGREDIENTS CARAMEL SAUCE Can be made a day ahead and gently reheated 200ml Double cream 200g Unsalted Butter Vanilla Pod 200g Caster Sugar 60ml Maple Syrup Cream or Ice Cream to serve Serves 6 38

METHOD - STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING  Pit and chop the dates. Put them in a bowl, cover them with the water and sprinkle over them the teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. Let the mixture soak and soften for at least 1/2 hour.  Put the date and water mixture in a pan on the stove and heat until boiling point. Cook the mixture for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let the mixture cool then puree it.  Preheat the oven to 160 degrees.  In another bowl mix and cream together the butter and dark muscovado sugar. Add the eggs slowly then the softened dates and mix together. Sieve the flour and baking powder into this mixture  If using individual moulds, butter and flour six of them and fill them 3/4 up with the mixture. If using a 8”/20cm square tin line it with baking parchment and fill it with the sticky toffee batter.  Place in the oven and bake the moulds for 10-12 minutes or the square tin for 15-20 minutes until cooked through. METHOD - CARAMEL SAUCE  In a pan on the stove melt the butter, vanilla and caster sugar. Bring it to the boil and whisk continuously. The mixture will start to caramelize, then add the maple syrup. Do not stop whisking, the mixture will go from a white gold colour to a nutty brown one.  Be careful as the whole thing will tend to splatter, calm it down by pouring the cream over it and continue to whisk to get the smooth caramel sauce.  Sieve the sauce to remove any lumps and save, keeping warm, until ready to use.  The square pudding can be pricked on top with a fork and the hot sauce poured all over it. If using the individual moulds, turn them onto individual plates and spoon over a generous amount of toffee sauce.  This pudding can be served with cream, but also works really well with ice cream such as vanilla.

his winter we are working in pilot areas to enhance our business and rural crime strategies which both recognise the fear of crime and look at how we work in partnership with communities to best protect them. It is clear that we get the best outcomes where we have the strongest Watch schemes with the most people involved. To join one of our many Watch schemes or receive regular updates visit https:// www.westmercia.police.uk/ article/1992/Join-a-watchscheme. We are also doing some significant work in the Vale of Evesham with SmartWater - a substance that uses the latest property marking technology to protect your home and possessions. Local second-hand goods traders and police officers are now equipped to detect its presence. Using SmartWater to assign your valuables with a unique forensic code allows them to be traced back to you, making your home less of a target for thieves and helping ensure offenders are prosecuted. Only visible under UV light, SmartWater can be used on anything from electronic equipment to jewellery, is easy to apply and does not leave any marks or stains. Proven to work and feared by criminals, it is supplied with signage to warn

thieves that your home is protected. When deployed, it has helped reduce burglary by up to 85%. DEDICATE a Light of Love Lights of Love is a series of five free events being held throughout Worcestershire this month. Each vibrant event is a collection of music, readings and time to honour the special memories of our loved ones. It's also a chance for our community to come together - united in celebration and remembrance of the lives of those we've lost. Helen Griffee of St Richard’s Hospice explains.

L

ights of love will be shining across Worcestershire this festive season to celebrate the lives of thousands of special people who are held in memory. Anyone who has lost a loved one is welcome to dedicate a light, not just those who have a connection with St Richard’s. The names of loved ones will be displayed on boards surrounding the Christmas tree in St Andrew's Spire, Worcester and in a Book of Thanksgiving placed in Worcester Cathedral, The Priory in Malvern, Pershore Abbey and Droitwich Library throughout December. Those who dedicate a name and donate will receive a special photo decoration that can be hung on the Christmas tree at home. Names can be dedicated up until Monday, 42

14th December. The chance to dedicate a light in memory unites people by their shared experience of missing someone dear – bringing great comfort and support. Last year lights were dedicated to 2,768 people. Hundreds of names have already been dedicated this year creating donations of over £28,000 so far towards our hospice care. One family who have dedicated a light for the first time is the Groves. Tom Groves writes: My dad, Nick, had renal cancer and died in December at St Richard’s. We knew Dad might need hospice care – but we didn’t know just how much they would help us during that difficult time. At first, Dad was seen by a community nurse, Joy, who helped

set the tone for all the compassionate practical care we would get from the hospice. Joy let us know that we would never be alone and listened to all our hopes and fears about the future. Dad spent his last five days at St Richard’s. I remember everything about the hospice – the spacious rooms, the green outdoor space visible from Dad’s bed, the pond and hungry ducks and a seemingly endless supply of tea and biscuits! The children’s playroom stuffed full of everything normal and fun. The guest bedrooms meant Mum would be able to get some proper rest in the knowledge that she was just a few seconds away from Dad. Words cannot describe the care and attention that was given to everyone who visited. The staff were calm, caring and friendly:

they supported excitable grandchildren and tearful adults. The doctors and nurses were never rushed and always had time to spend with anyone who needed them, day or night. St Richard’s is truly an amazing place; we were lucky that Dad could spend his last days in comfort and peace and we will be forever grateful. Lights of Love will give us the chance to come together and share our memories about Dad, and importantly, it helps raise vital funds for St Richard’s Hospice to help countless other families going through experiences like ours. If you would like to make a dedication please go online to www.strichards.org.uk/ lightsoflove or call the Fundraising Team on 01905 763963.

St Richard’s is grateful to the main event sponsor George Crump & Son Funeral Directors and to Worcester Cathedral, Leigh Sinton Farm & Nurseries and other local businesses for their support. St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with lifethreatening illnesses and supports their families. Each year the hospice team supports over 2,600 patients and family members in Worcestershire with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. Patients are cared for in Day Hospice, the 17-bed In-patient Unit or in their own homes by a specialist professional team as well as many trained volunteers. In the In-patient Unit, specialist staff are on hand 24 hours a day to manage patients’ symptoms and

where, if appropriate, patients may spend the last few days of life in comfort and dignity. St Richard’s is an independent charity and is grateful for all donations to help it to continue its work. For more information please visit www.strichards.org.uk
