A village fete…
captures the essence of summer and this issue we bring you details of several nostalgic events being held locally. I’m fascinated by their history and what they tell us about country life through the decades. In their own quiet way they symbolise our desire to be connected and to celebrate a place that is special to us with people who share our love of it. Living in the countryside, it's easy to stay close to nature but there’s always more to learn. This season, why not take time to study the lovely world of ladybirds, discover our beautiful local gardens or visit the extravaganzas that are Pershore Plum Festival and Malvern Autumn Show? Foodie, farmer or garden lover, it’s all there on your doorstep, waiting for you. Remember you can access Life in the Village wherever you are by following us on twitter @lisalambon or visiting lifeinthevillage.co.uk where you’ll find our four magazines in digital format, three new competitions and a great range of money saving offers. Until next time,

Seven spot ladybirds hibernating PHOTO Harry Green
A loveliness of Ladybirds With their vivid colours and gossamer wings ladybirds are one of the simple pleasures of summer. Wendy Carter of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust offers a beginner’s guide.
T
he birds were singing, the sun was shining and I was watching bees on the plum blossom in my garden earlier this year when something on the ground caught my eye. I looked more closely and at the bottom of the fence post, almost hidden by grass, were several small bundles of around 200-300 sixteen-spot ladybirds. Typical for many ladybirds, these little chaps and chappesses had spent the winter huddled together in large groups; in my garden they’ll have probably hidden in the nooks and crevices 10
of the fence but elsewhere they’ll use logs, leaves and bark. Sixteen-spot ladybirds feed on mildew but when you find a good number of other species too it’s usually because there’s an aphid colony somewhere nearby; the aphids won’t last long once the ladybirds find them. For this reason, ladybirds are great friends to us gardeners and their presence is testament to a healthy space that is working for both gardeners and wildlife. Perhaps one of the reasons why we all view ladybirds with such affection is that they’ve been with us since childhood. Almost all of us can recite ‘ladybird, ladybird fly away home...’ and
I’ve no doubt that most of our younger selves could name a ladybird before we could identify pretty much anything else. Kids tend to seek out their bright colours and I, for one, would invite them onto my hand and giggle as their wee legs tickled my skin. Is it any surprise, then, that the collective noun for ladybirds is a loveliness? Ladybirds also helped many of us to learn to count. As a child I was taught to recognise what kind of ladybird I was looking at by counting the spots on its wing cases. That’s often true but, with 46 species of ladybird in the UK, there are always a few exceptions to the rule…
Seven spot ladybird PHOTO Wendy Carter
Cream-streaked ladybird PHOTO Wendy Carter
Know your ladybird The seven spot The most common native ladybird that you’ll encounter is the seven-spot. They’re pretty easy to recognise – seven black spots on their red wing cases are relatively easy for us to count, even on a fast moving beetle. As with many other species of ladybird, this red and black colouring is a warning to potential predators; yes, it doesn't seem quite right but our beloved ladybirds are toxic. Toxicity is an effective method for Nature to use so there are very few predators or parasites associated with ladybirds (although birds that feed in flight are a visible exception).
A couple of years ago I discovered an aphid colony on the golden feverfew in my flower bed. The flowers had already gone over by this point and I was fascinated by the comings and goings of ants that were farming the aphids for their honeydew. As I sat and watched, a couple of ladybirds arrived on the scene with hungry intent in their eyes. Over the course of the next fifteen minutes or so, I observed them make their way towards the aphids only to be ‘beaten’ back by the ants, determined to protect their honeydew. But more ladybirds arrived and a meal was finally eaten; all in a day’s work, it seems, for the inhabitants of my garden. 11

Sixteen spots and more The sixteen spot ladybirds I found earlier this year are creamy-buff with black spots. Just to confound you, although they’re called sixteen-spot, they can actually sport between thirteen and eighteen spots. They also have a black line down the centre of their back – where their wing cases meet. Sixteen-spots are much creamier in colour than the bright yellow fourteen-spot ladybird, which also has a black line down the centre of the back. However, the spots on the fourteen-spot are often fused to make long rectangular marks, which can also help you distinguish it from the similarly bright yellow 22-spot ladybird. The orange ladybird Confused by spots yet? Let’s talk colours. The rather obviouslynamed orange ladybird is, yes you guessed it, orange. This time the spots are white and they can have between twelve and sixteen of them. These ladybirds are found on trees rather than in your flower bed but they
hibernate in leaf litter and under branches so you may come across them if you’ve got mature trees or if you walk in woods or tree-lined lanes. Until recently, orange ladybirds were considered to be an ancient woodlands species but they’ve become much more widespread on specimens of sycamore and ash throughout the countryside, most likely because our increasingly warmer and wetter weather provides more mildew for them to nibble on. Cream-streaked ladybird If you’ve got a few conifers in your garden, there’s a chance you may come across creamstreaked ladybirds. These beautiful beetles can be yellow, orange or pinky in colour with anything from four to 20 black spots but the tell-tale identification is the cream streaks down their wing cases. They’re relatively easy to spot when they’re wandering about on the bark of a conifer but can be really tricky to spy when they’re resting on the buds!

Helping ladybirds So we know that ladybirds are great for your garden but why exactly is that? It’s because these chubby little beetles are actually ferocious predators that like nothing better than munching their way through any aphids that may be trying to set up home on your plants. Ladybirds emerge in the spring, mate and lay their eggs – often in the middle of aphid colonies so that their young will have something to eat when they hatch. It’s estimated that the spiky alien-looking larvae can eat thousands of aphids before pupating (in just three to six weeks). It makes sense, then, to do what you can to encourage them into your garden: Put away your chemical bugkillers; ladybirds will do this job nicely for you once you’ve
14
attracted them to your garden. Plant umbels As well as eating aphids, adult ladybirds also feed on pollen and are particularly partial to yellow and white flowers like fennel, angelica, wild carrot, cosmos, calendula and coreopsis. Try companion planting to encourage aphids away from your prize blooms whilst still allowing them in your garden as ladybird fodder. It’s not an exact science but it is worth trying planting borage near strawberries and tomatoes, which will attract bees; planting garlic and chives under roses, which is believed to keep aphids and black spot away; planting nasturtiums among vegetables, which will not only attract aphids away from them but is also believed to repel ants and whitefly. Try to leave an area of your garden wild to give ladybirds plenty of safe places to lay their eggs; if you have space for a few logs you’ll also be providing them with nooks and crannies to hide away in for the winter. Pop up a bug hotel Ladybirds like to hideaway in nooks and crannies during winter so why

ON COLOUR CORRECTION GRAHAM
As the light changes and our skin becomes more tanned our hair colour can suddenly seem too light or too dark but there is always a remedy suggests Graham West.
T
he continued application of colour, without proper professional care, can lead to the problem of colour build-up. It’s the number one problem that clients who have previously coloured their hair at home ask us to resolve. Typically, their colour will have become darker and darker over time, leaving their hair flat, dull and lifeless. Brunettes tend to go too red or black while blondes usually go too brassy. In these circumstances we undertake a lengthy consultation to assess the condition of the hair, consider face shape, skin tone and eye colour then discuss, realistically, the time and budget they want to commit to achieving and maintaining their colour. In some cases we’re able to offer an instant quick-fix but often we’ll begin a step-by-step process to achieve the desired look over a period of weeks or months. The

first step is for us to conduct a ‘colour search’ which removes the top layer of colour and allows us to understand what we’re working with in more detail. The solution may lie in the application of a single new natural colour but usually we’ll use a combination of techniques like balayage, babylights or colour ecliptingTM which combine multiple shades to subtly enhance the base colour and your individual features. Blonde hair, in particular, always needs refining to achieve the most polished look. Lots of our clients visit the salon and ‘interview’ us before we touch their hair. Policing South Worcestershire
With Policing Commander for South Worcestershire, Supt. Kevin Purcell
I
n considering modern day policing I often wonder: Is it an art or a science? We rely increasingly on technical equipment like computers and CCTV and some officers now wear innovative body worn video cameras attached to their uniform. This equipment is so valuable in the fight against crime and we need it for policing to keep pace in an ever changing world. The fact is, sometimes, solving a crime is all about science. However, local residents tell us time and again of the confidence they gain from seeing police officers visible on their streets and the satisfaction they get from seeing them respond to their concerns. It’s a constant reminder that policing, reliant on everyday human interactions, is also an art. In terms of confidence, it’s important that we cover all corners of our patch and ensure that patrols are visible throughout the villages of South Worcestershire. I know from my mailbag that this is an issue that communities see as vital so I have challenged my teams to be more visible, solve local problems rapidly and report back to parish councils on their activity. In terms of resolving concerns,

it interests me that often, the help or support requested isn't related to major crime but focuses on what could be perceived as mundane quality of life issues like traffic control or anti-social behaviour. I am often told, for example, how speeding vehicles blight the quality of life in a village. In the scale of police priorities in preventing and responding to crime, speed control has not always been treated as pressing but I have now outlined fresh expectations to your local policing teams on this issue. We cannot be present all of the time to enforce speed limits and advise on poor driving. However we should be active some of the time. It is perfectly reasonable for us to be expected to mount infrequent but effective speed enforcement operations in rural areas because they have a significant, long lasting impact. Such operations are well received and show that we are out there doing our best. They also remind criminals that we are here, protecting our communities. If you are curious about the art and science of policing and would like to find out what really goes on in our police stations, please come to the South
Worcestershire Police Open Day at Worcester Police Station on Sunday 27th August.* We’ll open up the cells and have a range of stands showing what we do so it’s an opportunity to get behind the scenes. It would be great to see you for what is a free, fun few hours.

Dakota, live music from ukulele band The Spa Strummers and traditional Scottish bagpipe music from Cheltenham’s St. Andrews Pipe Band. It all takes place on Saturday 22nd July on The Recreation Ground, Sands Lane, Badsey, Evesham, WR11 7EZ. The show will also feature circus skills from Magic Steve, local dance troupe United Dance Academy, a fun dog show and a large marquee of exhibits from local amateur growers and producers. In addition, the traditional mix of stalls, sideshows, children’s games and food and drink will all be in place. If you’d like to get involved email info@badseyflowershow.co.uk. The Badsey Flower Show attracts around 2,000 people each year because it’s a wonderful, value for money family afternoon out. Gates open at 1pm so put the date in your diary now.

Belle House Chicken Liver Parfait The ideal starter or canapé for a summer party, this recipe is easy to make ahead. Serve with slices of baguette or melba toast and sprigs of fresh thyme for a delicious contrast between smooth parfait and crunchy bread. INGREDIENTS 1.75lb chicken livers, washed 10 oz melted butter 400ml double cream 2 eggs 20 ml brandy 20ml white port 0.5oz pink salt 4 garlic cloves salt & pepper to taste French bread or melba toast plus sprigs of fresh thyme or sage to serve
Serves 8-10 30
METHOD Preheat the oven to 140 degrees and have a bain marie ready (large tray filled with warm water) Blend the livers, brandy, salt, garlic and pass through a sieve Blend again and add eggs and then gradually add the butter and cream. This needs to be done slowly to prevent it from splitting Once it is mixed well, check seasoning and pour into moulds Place in a bain marie and put in the oven for 20 minutes After 20 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 100 degrees and bake for another 40 minutes Once cooked, remove from the oven and bain marie and once cooled, store in the fridge overnight for a nice firm parfait.

The strength, slimness and style of aluminium offers countless possibilities for your home suggests John Lannen.
O 34
ften specified by architects for new buildings or extensions, aluminium is a luxury material long associated with innovative and imaginative design. Elegant
and lightweight, windows and doors manufactured from it tend to be slim with flat, reflective frames and a large surface area of glass making it particularly suitable for large openings. One of the key benefits of aluminium is that it enables you to maximise sightlines, flood your home with
natural light and create a seamless connection between inside and out. In recent years, the popularity of aluminium has grown, mainly driven by the appeal of new products such as bi-fold doors and roof lanterns which offer fresh ways of enclosing space.
Company Promotion
BOOK A FREE SURVEY Combined with modern, thermally efficient glass this totally recyclable material can create effective insulation with minimal condensation, even in technically challenging spaces. Innovative slide and turn and glass moveable wall solutions create new architectural possibilities, including options for opening up corners and glazing round curves. It’s even possible for aluminium framed glass panels to slide either into or behind a wall to achieve a 100% complete opening. Aluminium is available in a wide range of colours and when it comes to security, it also scores highly. Super strong, reliably smooth to operate and durable, it is ideal for areas of high traffic or commercial settings. It does not burn and is particularly resistant to heavy rain and high winds so even in exposed properties, it requires
virtually no maintenance. Products such as bi-fold doors which feature numerous panels that work together are far more complex to design, manufacture and install than a traditional entrance so rely on expert craftsmanship. Our experienced in-house team combines traditional building skills with modern technology. We always pay careful attention to detail to ensure every project progresses smoothly and gives a superb result. It’s just one of the reasons we have the confidence to back all of our products with a ten year guarantee and free annual inspection. Caring for your pets Registered Veterinary Nurse Jo Lewis of Folly Gardens, Tewkesbury and Bishop’s Cleeve on the changing role of vet nurses.
T
he Folly Gardens team is comprised of staff in veterinary, nursing, management and administrative roles and we all work together to offer the highest level of modern pet care. By pooling our strengths, we maximise our resources and are able to run the practice in the most efficient way, offering services at a reasonable rate. The contribution nurses make is central to our ongoing growth and the expansion of services. The role of the Registered Veterinary Nurse has changed significantly over the last 20 years. Today, we are trained to carry out a wide range of independent duties including health checks, vaccinations, post -operative follow-ups, nail clipping, ear cleaning, flea and worm control and anal gland expressing. We offer a range of preventative advice in specialist fields such as diet, behaviour and dental care and we also play a role in the operating theatre, helping with x-rays, laboratory checks and the administration of anaesthetics. Company Promotion
Nurses spend a minimum of two years training and must pass written and practical exams to achieve either a diploma or degree in Veterinary Nursing. As part of their education, they learn about anatomy and physiology, husbandry, anaesthesia, radiography, nutrition and surgical nursing. Not all veterinary practices employ qualified, registered nurses but we’re proud to have a large team working across our three clinics. Folly Gardens is also registered training practice which means we’re recognised as investing in training nurses to a high standard. Once qualified, nurses must complete at least fifteen hours continued professional development annually to retain their place on the list of registered vet nurses. You can meet our team of nurses at daily consulting clinics for routine flea and worm control, nail-clipping and anal gland expressing, dental health examinations, concerns about behaviour, nutritional advice and weight assessments. 2017 Port Street International Fayre
Photos: Pamela H Photography & Mark Goodge
Port Street, Bengeworth, Evesham, Sunday 2nd July 2017, 10am-5pm
Kim Dunn invites you to dress up and enjoy a vibrant day in Evesham.
F
ollowing the amazing success of our two previous events, Port Street Fayre is set to expand this year and be better than ever. The date is set for Sunday 2nd July from 10am to 5pm. The fayre is a genuine local event open to residents and visitors, with the theme of ‘international fayre,’ and all are welcome. New for 2017, the fayre is expanding into Workman Gardens, at the bottom of Port
Street, next to the river. This will be the ‘Kids Zone’ with bouncy castles, a climbing wall, stand up paddle-boarding on the river and lots more. We will host one stage at the bottom of Port street, by the Angel Vaults, with a variety of live acts throughout the day, and a second stage at the Swan Inn with entertainment focussed there throughout the afternoon and evening. There will be a wide variety of
food available along Port Street, plus attractions and stalls including street entertainers, exotic animals, fire eaters and dancing troupes. Now a tradition, the Big Wheel at the top of the street is well worth a go as it provides a great view of the event and the town. Totally free to come and visit, the 2017 Port Street International Fayre will be a great community event and we hope you can pay it a visit. Remember to dress up...
Admission FREE - All welcome 10am - 5pm Sunday 2nd July Enquiries: Kim Dunn 07962 240627 Email: bonkersactivities@hotmail.com 49

Overbury
Street Market
Andrew John invites you to enjoy this annual fundraiser in a picturesque setting.
N
ow in it’s 39th year, Overbury Street Market is a popular annual event taking place on the second Saturday in July. Set in our beautiful Cotswolds village, it never fails to draw a big crowd. With only two hours available, trading is always brisk and fun. This year, on Saturday 8th July, the colourful banners will be flying as usual to welcome visitors from 10am until 12 noon. Plan to have a late breakfast because the first thing you will be faced with is the irresistible Bacon Buttie stall. There will be a wide variety of
stalls on Church Row including ‘Going for a Song’ which will be bursting with bargains and Anne’s Pantry, filled with scrumptious homemade cakes which are guaranteed to sell out quickly. Arrive early to buy the best lemon drizzle cake, marmalade, and delicious Overbury Lamb reared on Bredon Hill. There will also be a huge selection of books, cds and toys plus a bottle tombola. It’s a great chance to source locally grown garden plants and take part in an excellent raffle which is traditionally drawn to close the market at 12noon. Refreshments, including ice cream, are available in a delightful adjacent garden with relaxing musical entertainment. Children can access another beautiful garden close by in which to enjoy
themselves. We offer something for everyone and an enjoyable start to your weekend. Car parking and entrance are free and situated within only a few yards of the market making access easy for all. In the event of bad the event is relocated to the Village Hall. Overbury Street Market is run to raise funds for various community organisations in Overbury and Conderton, mainly St Faith’s Church, the Village Hall, Friends of Overbury School and the Cricket Club. We always welcome local stall holders and offers of help so if you are interested please ring Andrew John on 01386 725229 or email aj@apsjohn.net. O
Suzanne Hamilton invites you to ‘A Day at the Races’.
ur traditional show is held in the idyllic setting of Great Comberton’s Brailles Orchard, overlooked by Bredon Hill and our ancient church. The centrepiece is the historic marquee with its fiercely competitive classes for wine, fruit, vegetables, art and crafts, cookery and children. This year we are celebrating our 71st event with the theme, ’A Day at the Races’ so look out for
the ladies in their race attire and race themed classes in the marquee. Classes are open to all so please get involved. You can also enjoy a fabulous selection of quality village and craft stalls and plenty of games and activities from our infamous egg throwing championship to plank plodding, Ed’s Punch and Judy and the Google treasure hunt. The novelty dog show starts at 2.30pm and classic cars are judged during the afternoon.
This year’s children's fancy dress is "my favourite book character" - it's free to enter and there will be prizes for all. A wide range of refreshments will be on offer including WI teas, a BBQ and Village Bar. The day ends with an auction of exhibits so you can take home some prize winning produce. If you have a classic car from any era then please bring it along and enter it for “the car our judge would most like to take home.”
Entrance Adults £2.50, Children Free 2pm - 5pm Saturday 26th August Free Parking Schedules & details at www.theflowershow.org.uk or call Suzanne Hamilton on 01386 710466 55
Crème Brulee & Strawberry Granite Crème Brulee is the ultimate accompaniment to luscious, summer berries; prepare ahead and all you’ll have to do is top with a caramel crust. Try teaming it with Strawberry Granite, a lovely choice for a summer wedding or dinner party. INGREDIENTS CRÈME BRULEE 500ml double cream 1 vanilla pod 100g caster sugar (plus extra for the topping) 6 free-range egg yolks 100g white chocolate (melted) or to taste
Serves 4-6
INGREDIENTS STRAWBERRY GRANITE 1 pint strawberry puree ½ pint of stock syrup 100ml water Serves 4 56
METHOD CRÈME BRULEE Preheat the oven to 170°/Gas 3 Pour the cream into a saucepan. Split the vanilla pod lengthways and scrape the seeds into the cream, simmer Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, beat the sugar and egg yolks together in a large heatproof bowl until pale and fluffy Bring the cream back to boiling point, add the white chocolate to the cream and then pour it over the egg mixture, return to the pan and whisk continuously until thickened (this indicates that the eggs have begun to cook slightly), do not let this boil at this stage Strain the mixture through a fine sieve into a large jug, and then use this to fill ramekins or moulds to about two-thirds full, then chill them. When ready to serve, sprinkle one level teaspoon of caster sugar evenly over the surface of each crème brulee, then caramelise with a chefs' blow-torch. METHOD STRAWBERRY GRANITE Mix all three ingredients together and freeze Keep forking every 45 minutes in the freezer until frozen Garnish with fresh strawberries or edible dried rose leaves
