Looking for noble chafers

GREEN Jewels Noble chafer beetles have undergone decline but maintain a stronghold locally due to our many precious orchards. Wendy Carter of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust explains more.

14

O

h wow” I whispered, “they’re so beautiful ...and big.” The iridescent green jewel shimmered in the sunlight. This was it. Finally, I’d tracked down one of the UK’s most elusive beetles - a noble chafer. These scarce beetles rely on the decaying heartwood of old orchard trees; and as we’ve grubbed up our orchards, we’ve made their lives much harder. Across Worcestershire and Gloucestershire we’re in the middle of the main UK stronghold so they’re still relatively common. Reasonable numbers are still found in traditional orchards and they’re clinging on in gardens with old fruit trees; which brings me neatly to you. Having seen one on a nature reserve, a friend at the end of my road realised she has them in her garden! Could yours be a useful source of information for us too?

NEW!

Follow us on twitter @WorcsWT

Noble chafer poo courtesy of Jenni Schenke

Noble chafer here and left courtesy of Harry Green

Like many of our insects, noble chafers spend much of their lives hidden from view. Their larvae can live for up to three years in plum, cherry and apple trees, munching their way through the rotting heartwood. By contrast, the adults are on the wing for a matter of weeks. They emerge from May to late June, depending on the weather, and fly for about six to eight weeks. About 2cm long, you will find them on the heads of elder and hogweed umbellifers along woodland rides and in sunny, sheltered spots. If you have old fruit trees in your garden – and especially if you live in an area that was or still is rich in orchard trees – you may even have these rare beasties on your doorstep. One easy way to find out is to take a long-handled spoon and gently poke it into a cavity of your tree – if it comes out with coffee -looking granules likes the ones pictured above, you’ve found noble chafer larvae poo! So how can you help noble chafers? Leaving mature and even dying fruit trees standing provides much-needed habitat and planting new ones will ensure a perfect environment for the future. If you have to remove the limbs of fruit trees during pruning, try to leave them in a corner of the garden so the larvae can continue to munch and grow and

Worcestershire can continue as one of their heartlands! Most of us aren’t fortunate enough to own a traditional orchard or even have space for fruit trees in our gardens but that’s not a problem – we can head to one of our nature reserves such as Tiddesley Wood, just outside Pershore (satnav WR10 2AD) and hunt for these gems along rides and paths. If you think you’ve got noble chafers I’d love to hear from you. Please drop me a line at wendy@worcestershirewildlifetrust.org. You can also share what wildlife and wild places mean to you, including any local photos, on twitter; just remember to use the hashtag #MyWildLife.

Pet Talk

NEW! What RCVS Accreditation Means

Proud Winners of 2014 Veterinary Practice Front-Of-House Award for our Bishop’s Cleeve Clinic!

P

ets are often treated as members of the family and owners rightly want to be sure they receive excellent veterinary care. But how can you be sure? One way is to look for RCVS accreditation, which we are proud to announce has recently been awarded to all three Folly Gardens’ clinics. It’s meant a huge effort from our team of 25 and is evidence of our continued commitment to provide the best possible care carried out in the most suitable manner. The RCVS or Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons is the governing body that registers veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses to practise in the UK, and regulates their educational, ethical and clinical standards. Their aim is, ‘to safeguard the health and welfare of animals under veterinary care, protect the interests of those dependent on animals and assure public health.’ One of their functions is regulatory and they run a voluntary initiative to Company Promotion

Expert advice from Vet Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens, Tewkesbury & Bishop’s Cleeve. accredit veterinary practices in the UK. Through setting standards and carrying out regular inspections, their scheme aims to promote and maintain the highest standards of veterinary care. It offers peace of mind to clients of accredited practices and a more informed choice to the animalowning public. To become accredited, practices volunteer for regular rigorous inspections which ensure we have met a range of minimum standards including hygiene, 24hour emergency cover, staff training and up-to-date equipment and show we are independently recognised as achieving excellence in veterinary care. For peace of mind, look for the RCVS accredited practice logo opposite which indicates that a practice has passed an independent inspection. This means the high standards of care for your pet and peace of mind for you. For any queries relating to your animals please call us on 01684 292244 or 01242 679880. Wishing you and your pet well,

Brad

STYLE Gloucestershire based John Roberts crafts and restores cast iron garden furniture designed to last for generations. We found out more about his work. What inspired your business? Three years ago, I was in search of a new bench for my garden. I wanted something high quality, individual and full of character but really struggled to find anything to inspire me. Then by chance, browsing in a junk shop, I came across a pair of Victorian cast iron bench ends and decided to restore them instead. So many people admired the finished product and asked me to make something similar for them that I invested in ten sets of reclaimed cast iron frames. Having renovated them, they sold immediately and the business has evolved from there.

Puckrup Hall Golf Club and Cheltenham Racecourse.

What does restoration involve? Some of the furniture we collect from customers is in a dreadful state with rotting timbers and rusting iron but it’s rare for an item to be beyond repair. The design of each bench is dictated by its frame, varying in size and style from the simple to the highly ornate. We clean the cast iron ends, sandblasting if necessary, then give them at least two coats of Hammerite paint. The slats are crafted from sustainable hardwood like sapele, teak or oak which is coated for protection. All fixings What services do you offer now? are high grade stainless steel so We make a selection of tables, the final product is sturdy, long chairs, benches and accessories for lasting and can be left out all year purchase from stock. We also round. We love what we do and offer a furniture restoration each renovation is carried out with service and make hardwood, steel care so our customers are always and memorial benches. GRAHAM

From Bob Marley to David Beckham, men the world over have made trademark hair work for them. For men, the trick is the same as for women; find a cut that works for you and cement a signature look that you can return to again and again. Graham West explains.

T

here are six male haircuts that stand the test of time, but choose carefully - some of them need serious commitment.  The Quiff Pioneered by Elvis and adapted by Eddie Redmayne, this is the daddy of all styles and never quite goes out of fashion. Ask your stylist to leave enough length on top to allow the hair to buckle but keep the sides and the back short. Be warned; as with any retro cut the danger is in looking like you are in costume. Avoid that by sticking to a messier, tousled texture as worn by Mark Ronson. The Buzz Cut The ultimate low maintenance style uses clippers to trim hair to within (less than) an inch of its life. Brad Pitt, Kanye West and Ewan Mcgregor have made this work. Keep the sides a bit shorter than the top to avoid the illusion of premature ageing. The Slicked Back The classic of classics as worn by Humphrey Bogart. Basically the anti quiff; the

Cut Throat Shaving

cut is the same but instead of building volume, hair is combed back and flattened, projecting an image of sublime suave.  The Relaxed Curl If you have curly hair and a more angular face, put down the gel and straighteners, get a round cut and let your hair do its thing. You can spend your life fighting your waves or you can own them a la Orlando Bloom and Tinie Tempa who mix relaxed, twisted curls with impeccable tailoring.  The Side Parting Quintessential Hollywood style, as sported by Benedict Cumberbatch and Ryan Gosling; high and short at the sides, roughly an inch on top. To get it right remember a great hair cut must look good and be practical. Book a complimentary consultation today and find out what might work for you or your man.

Hot towels, facial massage and the closest shave you can achieve - great for a special event.

The Pershore Plum Festival Saturday 29th – Monday 31st August 2015

Triple winner of Worcestershire’s Best Tourism Event and Festival Award 2011 - 2013, the Pershore Plum Festival returns this August. Think Pershore, think purple, think plums! Celebrating Our Plummy Heritage Orchards in this area produce tons of plums every year – varieties such as Victoria, Majorie Seedling, Heron, Monarch, Pershore Purple, Pershore Yellow Egg Plum and Pershore Emblem are some of the most well known and sought after. Pershore and the area has been famous for its fruit growing since medieval times. Early in the 19th century the Pershore Yellow Egg Plum was found growing wild in Tiddesley Wood and by 1870 records show that over 900 tons of the fruit were being sent to market during harvest time. At the Pershore Flower Show in 1920, a poster advertising the event described it as “The Largest Plum Show on Earth” and over ninety years later the town is striving to recreate this spectacle. 26

NEW RULES!

Safety in

Numbers Planning for your child’s future? New legislation on Junior ISA’s is great news for parents suggests local Independent Financial Advisor Paul Urmston.

New rules on Junior ISA’s New legislation means that since 6th April 2015 parents in the UK are able to transfer money held in Child Trust Funds into Junior ISA accounts. Child Trust Funds (CTFs) were launched a decade ago as a means of encouraging saving, but have often been criticised for high charges and poor returns. The benefits of a Junior ISA On first inspection, CTFs and Junior ISAs appear quite similar in that they offer the same tax perks and parents can save the same sums Why Choose an Independent Financial Advisor? Independent research suggests that independence is a deciding factor when it comes to choosing a financial advisor. Being independent means that an IFA can advise from right across the market unlike a restricted adviser, who will, as the name suggests be ’restricted’ to limited types of products or providers. 2plan wealth management is absolutely committed to independence and prides itself on transparency. 2plan wealth management Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. It is entered on the FCA register (www.fca.org.uk) under reference 461598.Registered office: 2plan wealth management Ltd, 3rd Floor, Bridgewater Place, Water Lane, Leeds, LS11 5BZ. (£4,080 in the 2015-16 tax year). In both cases, parents choose a cash or investment account. The key difference is that Junior ISAs offer more choice than CTFs, and better value, whether it’s higher interest rates on cash accounts, or lower fund management charges. Some commentators claim that this could boost returns by around £3,500 over 12 years, assuming parents invest £4,000 a year. Could your family benefit? The main advantage is seen by parents that save substantial sums on behalf of their children. A regular children’s savings account is potentially taxed at the parent’s marginal rate, subject to interest received from other investments held. On a Junior ISA, the main

benefit is that no Capital Gains Tax is due. And the investments grow in a largely tax-free environment, as with a standard ISA, where share dividends are paid net of 10% tax.

When do Junior ISAs mature? Neither Junior ISA nor CTF funds can be accessed until the child’s 18th birthday, at which point they get control of the money. They still won’t have to cash them in though; they can be left to grow within this tax-free wrapper. Junior ISAs can also be viewed as a great way to encourage your children to save from an early age. To find out more call 01905 421196 to arrange a meeting at my expense.

B

ack in the early years of our trading, the Directors here noted that potential

customers had two concerns; the quality of the products that they were about to purchase and the level of disruption that might accompany any alternations to their home. In response, we made a decision that our commitment would be to provide the best quality products and customer service locally at excellent value. We thought hard about how to offer reassurance and during the

1980’s, we decided upon an approach that remains at our heart today; to offer a ten year guarantee on all products across our range, backed up by an annual inspection. This commitment is designed to remove any anxiety associated with your investment. Regardless of what product we fit for you, you can be certain that top quality is a given. Final Hurdle Consultant Steven Thrush of Worcestershire Breast Care Team, invites you to help with the last push to get the new Worcestershire Breast Care Unit open this autumn.

W

e’re almost there. It’s hard to believe it, but in a few months we will all be standing in the new Worcestershire Breast Care Unit. After years of campaigning, we will finally have a suitable setting in which to care for the one in three women in the County who will

need to see a breast care specialist at some point in their life. I’m hugely thankful to everyone who has helped us raise the bulk of our £1.8m goal so far. With building about to start this summer and a planned opening later this year, our focus has now shifted to inside the unit – to what is required

to make it an outstanding facility for all who may use it in the future. Our vision has always been to make the unit as comfortable, homely and relaxing as possible, and to offer privacy, tranquillity and support as well as clinical expertise. We now need to raise further funds for all the furniture, internal fittings and furnishings, and the work to the gardens, and invite donations to help with this. A range of items are required from flooring, sofas, desks and armchairs to mirrors, blinds and drinking water dispensers - with varying costs from £35 to £6,000. Our policy is to buy high quality goods to minimise maintenance and replacement costs. Please do not purchase goods yourself and

s we move into the summer some types of crime become more prevalent. Avoiding jokes about whether two or three days sunshine are classed as summer, we do notice that some crimes become easier to commit. Windows left open on hot nights, garden tools and bikes being left in the open, and farm equipment being less secure all become issues. Criminals often do not fall into a specific category. If a burglar sees the opportunity to avoid going into a house by stealing expensive tools that are left in a garden, he or she will. Other non-crime incidents also come to the fore in the summer including deaths from swimming in open water. Sadly, several young people each year die in our rivers and quarries from swimming in unsafe waters. More still become involved in anti-social behaviour and low level crime. We know that parents are often shocked and upset to find that their child had been involved in low level disorder. Growing up is not a crime, however we know that often vulnerable people in our community become the targets of

young groups of people who make their lives a misery. I would ask all parents to ensure that they know where their children are at all times and be sure they are not causing problems for others. Summer also sees more people going away on holiday. Good advice is to ensure that neighbours are looking out for each other, knowing who is allowed access to each properties, what trades people are or aren't expected, and what can be done to not show criminals that you are not at home. Simple acts of kindness like cutting a neighbours’ grass can also work as effective crime prevention measures. Over the next few months we look forward to strengthening our presence in the community, bringing greater focus on neighbourhood watch, volunteers and how we use existing networks to help prevent crime and catch offenders. One recent interesting development in South Warwickshire that we will be seeking to replicate in South Worcestershire is neighbourhood watch on horse back. We know that often those out on a hack see interesting things in the world

around them from their lofty vantage point; they know what strange vehicles or people are in the villages. An exciting idea that we look forward to progressing. I hope you have a good summer.

BOAT RACES

T

Words: Amanda Bath

his September come along for a riverside afternoon of excitement, adrenalin and fun; watch the racing, take refreshments and have a go at the raffle and bottle stall. There will be a BBQ plus the hugely popular ReVIVals to entertain us. Last year the weather was glorious, attendance was up and the atmosphere was sociable – was that the cider kicking in? The Bredon Boat Races has really become a community event; a place to meet up with local friends and soak up the atmosphere. For 2015 entry will be held at £2.50, and under 12’s go free. It’s just £20 to enter a crew in the races, but don’t leave it to the last minute – last year we had entries on the day which made timetabling tricky. We only have the afternoon to fit in all the heats, so leave it too late and you might not get a chance

to paddle. The team to beat this year is last year’s victors, the event sponsors, Johnston Scotia, who are already in training! If you really want to win the trophy, it’s tougher than you might think – the boats are built for stability rather than speed, so serious paddling is hard going. Most important is having a team that will pull together – literally. Clashing paddles make lots of splashes which is fun on a hot day, but slows you down. Why not set yourself up as Captain and recruit a team to represent your pub, club, or workplace. Include your kids as this year, every participating child gets a treat. Fancy dress and fun facts about team members are encouraged for use by the announcer on the day. To book your place please email me for an entry form using the address below.

 Turn up at midday or you may miss your first race!

 Wear team kit or fancy dress;

it could boost team spirit and it will certainly lift the spirits of spectators.  Bring along family and friends. As well as the races, there will be entertainment and refreshments to keep your energy levels up.  Don’t worry about equipment as it will all be supplied but do be prepared to get splashed! Award Winning Dedication

Words: Helen Griffee

The skills and dedication of a specialist nurse providing end of life care to patients with life-threatening illnesses has been recognised with a prestigious Queen's Nurse award, explains Helen Griffee of St Richard’s Hospice.

B

ernie Fisher, who lives in Upton-upon-Severn, received the prestigious title of Queen's Nurse (QN) by community nursing charity The Queen's Nursing Institute (QNI) at a special award ceremony in London last month. Mrs Fisher, who qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1981, has 30 years of nursing experience in oncology and community nursing roles. She has provided compassionate care to St Richard's Hospice patients in their own homes and communities for the last six years, supporting patients registered with two GP practices in Worcester. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, she works with community healthcare teams to

50

manage patients' symptoms, offering patients emotional support and assists them to make informed choices about their care. A Queen's Nurse is someone who is highly skilled in their field of community nursing and provides their patients or clients with a feeling of well-being, of service and respect. A Queen's Nurse is committed to improving care and acts as a role model to other community nurses. The title is not an award for past service, but indicates a commitment to high standards of patient care, learning and leadership. Nurses who hold the title benefit from developmental workshops, bursaries, networking opportunities, and a shared

professional identity. Mrs Fisher said; "I am honoured to be awarded this title. I am passionate about providing excellent nursing care to very vulnerable patients in the community, and am looking forward to linking with other Queen's Nurses to develop new ideas that continue to develop our service." Crystal Oldman, Chief Executive of the QNI said; "Congratulations are due to Mrs Fisher for her success. Community nurses operate in an ever more challenging world and our role is to support them as effectively as we can. The QN title is a key part of this and we would encourage other community nurses to apply."

Behind The Scenes... With Caroline Lawrence from The Roses in Tewkesbury If you read this column regularly, it won’t have escaped your notice that this summer The Roses is planning a redevelopment of the building. This project has been helped along by a number of very generous grants from funding bodies that include Arts Council England (we are a National Portfolio Organisation), Tewkesbury Borough Council, The Summerfield Trust and Gloucestershire Environmental Trust. It’s not easy to obtain funding in this economic climate. So how have we done it? The answer may surprise you... Most people are aware that The Roses offers a wide range of performing arts and film on almost every day of the year. You may even know that The Roses is a registered charity. But did you know that the reason we have been so successful in our fundraising efforts is not just because of what you see on our stage, but also what you don’t see? For many years, The Roses has been slowly building an outreach programme that is now becoming recognised nationally. We work with an incredible number of people, from all backgrounds. For example, our Community Builder, Jane Griffiths, has just been recognised at the annual

Dementia Conference for her efforts to make Tewkesbury a dementia friendly community. We are the flagship venue on the Your Future project, which works with women and children who have been subject to domestic violence. Through the arts, this project creates safe spaces, boosts selfconfidence and rebuilds lives. We also run a nationally recognised Youth Theatre, who have performed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and at the National Theatre’s Connections Festival, and a Youth Dance programme. Many of our students go on to achieve places at top London performing arts schools. These are just three examples of the ways in which we reach our local community - I could go on. It is our commitment to our work both inside and outside our building that has led to our success, and I hope you will enjoy the fruits of our labour when we reopen our new look theatre. With £740,000 raised already, we’re not far away now! To donate to The Roses’ Redevelopment Appeal and help get us over the finishing line, please contact Beckie Smith at beckie.smith@rosestheatre.org or 01684 853070. Thank you.

or many years now Dumbleton Cricket Club has played host to one of the finest and friendliest village fetes in the Cotswolds. Despite last year’s very wet Bank Holiday Monday, the fete proved to be a great place to meet up with friends and this year promises to be better than ever. Set in picturesque parkland, surrounded by water and magnificent trees, Dumbleton is one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the country. Our traditional fete always attracts a huge crowd, offering a fantastic afternoon for all the family. Be sure to arrive promptly for the infamous bric a brac stall, bottle, and cake stalls. For the children we have games and races, face painting, Punch and Judy, bouncy castles, skittles, a chance to try out a few dance moves with Jo Martin’s dance

school demo, and much more. Adults can enjoy the variety of hand made craft stalls, try their hand at archery and even laser clay pigeon shooting. All this can be washed down with a traditional cream tea, a hog roast bap, a pint or glass of wine from the bar. The best part of all, is that entry to our fete is still free and there is limitless free parking. All proceeds go towards the running of the Cricket Club for the benefit of the village and local communities and the purchase of much needed equipment for the Juniors. We hope to see you all here on Bank Holiday Monday. If you would like to book a stall or have any queries, please contact Lianne Venner on 01386 882662. Pershore Plums French Tarte Tatin is traditionally made with apples that are cooked in caramel, then covered in puff pastry and baked in the oven until golden and crispy. Belle House Restaurant, Pershore serves this seasonal alternative – it’s easy to make and tastes delicious!

Plum Tarte Tatin INGREDIENTS 25g butter 25g caster sugar 2 cinnamon sticks Tarte tatin moulds or tarte tatin tin or frying pan (oven proof) 1 puff pastry sheet 500g Plums (ripe but firm, stones removed) INGREDIENTS (PLUM SYRUP) 150g Plums (washed & chopped) 25g brown sugar Dash of port ½ tsp ground cinnamon 25ml water (you may need an extra dash) Serves 4

58

METHOD  Butter the tarte tatin pan or individual moulds liberally, cover with caster sugar and place the cinnamon sticks on top; halve the sticks if making individual ones.  Wash, dry and halve the plums and remove stones.  Place the plums into the pan/moulds, presentation side down.  Put onto the stove and caramelise the plums to colour a nice rich brown but not black!  Once caramelised, place the puff pastry over them and press around the edges so the plums are fully covered by the pastry.  Place in the oven at 180°/Gas 6 and cook for approximately 12 minutes, until the pastry is crisp and golden.  Make the plum syrup for garnish by placing all the ingredients into a pan over a medium heat; bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently so it doesn’t burn.  Strain the syrup and use to serve around the individual portion of tarte tatin.  Allow to stand for 5-10 minutes then turn out (use a large plate to invert the tarte onto) and serve with ice cream of your choice.
