S
What are the things that comfort you most? As summer turns to autumn it can be hard to say goodbye to the sunshine but every season brings its own pleasures – on my list are sloe gin, mashed potato and toffee apple crumble. Eating seasonally is one way to keep food fresh and healthy so this issue we introduce a new series offering three classic seasonal recipes. We begin with mushrooms, courtesy of chef Steve Waites at Belle House. You’ll also find a new feature photo story, showcasing the work of a local photographer. I hope you enjoy the pictures of Julie Allen-Hall whose shots are not only technically good but infused with wonder at the natural world. If you love nature, wildlife or landscape photography and would like the chance to see your pictures featured, please get in touch. Our winter issue comes out late November. Between now and then, you can enjoy free daily updates on what’s happening locally by joining us on twitter @lisalambon or visiting our website lifeinthevillage.co.uk

T
he finch family was highly prized by the Victorians, captured in their thousands and kept in cages, before being exhibited at singing competitions. The fortunes of finches in the time since then has been mixed and like many species of wildlife, they need all the help they can get. But how do you tell a goldfinch from a greenfinch and what can you do to encourage them into your garden? Glimpses of gold Goldfinches are perhaps our most exotic-looking garden birds so it’s fitting that the collective noun for them is a ‘charm.’ Whilst their body feathers are an unremarkable golden beige, they have a strikingly beautiful red face with an arc of white behind the eyes and a black cape that descends from the back of the head to the shoulders. Their black wings are edged with a dazzling flash of gold which is easy to spot once they are in flight. 12
Highly sociable birds, goldfinches always seem to be chattering to one another. If you ever hear a liquid-like sound, constantly bubbling beyond your window, take a look into the trees and you’ll almost certainly find a group of goldfinches gossiping. In years gone by, goldfinches were rarely seen in gardens but results from the weekly garden birdwatch survey monitored by the British Trust for Ornithology show a big change. Recent statistics reveal that goldfinches are now seen in gardens 70% more frequently than they were just 20 years ago. With their long, fine beaks, goldfinches are adept at extracting seeds from thistles, teasels, ragwort, dandelions and more. Our modern preoccupation with tidiness and agricultural intensification have

eradicated many of these ‘weeds’ from the landscape so gardens are becoming increasingly important for their survival. Goldfinches like nesting in areas with scattered trees and shrubs so if you’ve got room, consider planting a silver birch or a rowan tree, or growing an evergreen hedge, to give a green structure to your plot - it’s a wildlife-friendly alternative to erecting fencing. Sorting the wheat from the chaff One of our most common birds, chaffinches were traditionally found in woodlands but have adapted well to our changing environment and can now sometimes be found nesting in gardens. Whilst the male bird dominates early in the season, singing his catchphrase up to 3000 times a day to proclaim his territory, the female takes charge as the breeding season gets underway, choosing the nesting site to raise their young. Their nests can take more than a week to complete, requiring an exhausting 1300 visits or more from the female. In appearance too, female chaffinches seem to get a raw Autumn 2018 | lifeinthevillage.co.uk

deal. The males are magnificent, resplendent with deep orange pink cheeks and breast, a blue-grey cap, green back and black wings. At first glance the dull beige female seems less interesting but catch her at close quarters, in good light, and you’ll notice the white flashes on her wings and subtle shades of green amongst her feathers, particularly on the rump. UK chaffinches tend to remain resident here, often staying together in pairs throughout the winter, but their Scandinavian cousins are migratory, moving through Europe (and into the UK) as the harsh weather draws in. Evidence shows that females and juveniles spend their winters further south than the males, leading to the nickname ‘bachelor bird’ for the males that spend the colder months flocking together. The chaffinch’s song is difficult to describe but easy to remember once learnt, having a flourish at the end that sounds a little like ‘ginger beer’. I first heard it locally during a dawn chorus walk. A few years ago, I was struck by a subtly lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Autumn 2018
different version whilst out walking in Suffolk… chaffinches, it seems, have regional accents! Occasionally, you may notice growths on the legs of a chaffinch. They can be caused by mites or a virus and whilst some birds can survive with them for long periods, for others complications will arise. Cleaning feeding stations regularly can help to reduce the transmission of problems like this. Green with envy Summed up perfectly by their name, male greenfinches are the brighter of the two sexes, with yellowish-green feathers adorning their olive-greygreen bodies and bright flashes of sulphur on their wings. The females are less vivid but still eye-catching. In spring, if you’re lucky, you may

see the males performing an aerial dance that shows off their beautiful feathers. They are robust birds with a large, strong beak that is capable of breaking into yew berries for the seed contained within. Both issue a wheezy trill. Like chaffinches, UK greenfinches rarely stray far from home but we enjoy an annual arrival of them from Norway each winter. Recoveries of birds that have been ringed teach us that some European birds can migrate an incredible 2000km. Ringing involves putting a small, numbered ring around a bird’s leg whilst recoveries are made by them being spotted elsewhere, perhaps by photographers capturing the numbers in their snaps or by bird watchers finding dead specimens. The UK greenfinch population has been severely hit on two fronts: from a reduction of natural food available in the landscape and by a disease called trichomonosis that has wiped out thousands of birds. This blight, affecting the upper digestive track, arose in 2005 and means birds are unable to swallow food, leaving them puffed-up, lethargic and 13
WILDLIFE unable to preen properly. As they feed their young on regurgitated seeds, the disease is easily passed on to the next generation. Death is inevitable, another reason why the regular cleaning of birdfeeders and tables is essential. Bullseye Shy and elusive, bullfinches have an unmistakeable rounded appearance. Both sexes sport a black cap and have a thick necked, bull-like profile. The colouring of the female is more muted than the male, which has a bright pink breast and slate grey shoulders. Both have black wings with a white bar and a tell-tale white rump, the best way to distinguish it in flight.
Give finches a helping hand… n
Don’t deadhead flowers as many finches will take the seeds
n
Plant a variety of flowers that can provide seed over the winter – try knapweed, thistles, flax, teasels or even quinoa, linseed or millet
n
Leave a wild patch with long grass to provide seeds
n
Plant trees like silver birch or rowan; most finches need trees rather than shrubs or hedges to nest in
n
Put out a variety of food from sunflower hearts and peanuts to niger seeds and millet
n
Clean feeders and bird baths regularly to reduce the chance of disease transmission
The single, quiet piping note of their call is easily overlooked but their intelligence is such that they can be trained to sing different tunes - in the past they were highly prized caged and competition birds. Despite their popularity, bullfinches were once regarded as a pest with thousands being trapped and killed every year in orchards throughout England. The reason? They adore buds on fruit trees, their short stubby beaks being ideally designed to pluck them off at a remarkable rate. This persecution ended many years ago but their numbers crashed from the 1970s onwards, especially on farmland but also, as structural diversity was lost, in woodlands. They only started to pick up again
at the turn of the millennium. Bullfinches are not often seen in gardens but when they are, they show a clear preference for rural spaces that have connectivity to small woodlands. They form strong, long-lasting partnerships so it’s usual to spot them in pairs, perhaps feeding on seed heads in long grass or around fruit trees. There’s lots you can do to attract these colourful creatures and their delightful cousins to your garden this season. If you think they may already populate your village, why not try planting an apple, pear or cherry tree, letting a small patch of your lawn grow wild, and putting up a variety of feeders to see if you can entice them in? You’ll be well rewarded.

#Know What You’re Made of Discover what defines you with Aveda hair colour specialist Graham West In recent months, the global beauty industry has seen a movement towards balance and harmony, seen in the trend for natural, ethical products and veganism. For us, as an Aveda salon, these ideas are nothing new. They’re what we’re made of. Our heart and soul. Aveda was founded in 1978 by hairdresser and beauty pioneer, Horst Rechelbacher, with the mission of creating holistic beauty through wellness. Aveda means “knowledge of the whole” in sanskrit. Horst was naturally talented, and by 17 he was working as a stylist at a prestigious salon in Rome, tending to international celebrities. In his twenties, he became a successful salon entrepreneur in the USA but suffered burnout from overwork. He recovered thanks to herbal remedies prepared by his mother, and the practice of yoga and meditation. Following a retreat in India in 1970, he integrated Ayurveda into his lifestyle and his salon business model. His holistic thinking - the belief that individual beauty is directly linked to the beauty of the world around us - revolutionised the beauty industry then and has fresh momentum now. It’s this belief that inspires our work every day. People who know who they are, are beautiful. Your lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Autumn 2018

Walking in the footsteps of our ancestors The construction of a pioneering wildlife visitor centre, recently opened in the Cotswolds was a rewarding project for Alderwood Construction, explains Craig Siller Ellie Harrison, presenter of Countryfile, was one of the first people in the county to try out the attractions at Greystones, an exciting new National Lottery funded wildlife visitor centre in Bourton-on-the-Water. The team at Alderwood Construction, specialists in period restorations, were delighted to be asked to take on the development of this historic site. At the official opening this summer Ellie led a hands-on nature workshop for local children, visited the site’s replica Iron Age
roundhouse, tested her wildlife knowledge on a digital quiz in the Discovery Barn and explored the site’s signposted trails. Greystones is run by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, a charity which manages 60 nature reserves around the county and inspires people to engage with
the county’s outdoor places. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust has been renovating Greystones – a former derelict farm – into a pioneering attraction, thanks to more than £750,000 National Lottery funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Grundon Waste Management, other supporters and dozens of volunteers. The opening means a fresh chapter in the story of Greystones has begun. The new centre gives us all the opportunity to immerse in nature and walk in the footsteps

LIFESTYLE of our ancestors on this incredible ancient site. In all, Greystones covers 66 hectares (around 80 football pitches). The site where Greystones is located has a unique history: people have gathered, lived and worked here for more than 6,000 years, and it is possibly one of the first places in the Cotswolds to be inhabited. It was particularly important during the Iron Age (about 2,500 years ago) when it became a regional centre for trading. Greystones is located within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has been officially recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its wildflower hay meadows. The nature reserve is open to the public seven days a week throughout the year, with easy-to-follow trails taking visitors through meadows, woodland, a river and wild play features. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust specialists and volunteers work year-round to improve the site for the many species found here, which include barn owls, otters and water voles. Greystones was bought by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust in 2001. At the time, it consisted of derelict farm buildings, farmland, meadows and rivers. The charity has carried out a substantial programme to develop the site into a nature reserve and wildlife visitor centre, and is farming the land in partnership with local cheesemaker, Simon Weaver. The surrounding area has benefited from improvements carried out by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers: for example, the River Eye is now a stronghold for water voles in the Cotswolds, while the marshy fields either side of the river are home to a vast range of wildflowers. lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Autumn 2018

Planning a Project in 2019? Call today on 01242 621190 for a free initial consultation and references
The construction phase took place over several months between February and September 2017. Several barns had to be taken down, the trusses reworked and then carefully rebuilt, all under the close supervision of architects and archaeologists. It required painstaking care and attention to detail. For example, in order to avoid digging down too far and undermining precious archaeological remains, the barns were constructed on special shallow pad foundations. As craftsmen specialising in stone and oak, the Alderwood team delights in working on the restoration of historic Cotswold buildings such as these so the project proved to be a rewarding challenge. Entry to Greystones is free, but there may be a 24
charge for some events. To find out what’s on, visit gloucestershirewildlifetrust.co.uk, email info@gloucestershirewildlifetrust.co.uk or call 01452 383333.

Personal Devices How GDPR affects the use of personal devices at work with Kirsten Cluer It’s four months since GDPR legislation came into effect and all businesses and organisations should now be following the stricter rules to ensure their compliance. But what about employees who use their own devices for work, so holding personal and possibly sensitive data about clients, customers, prospects, suppliers and colleagues? Use of personal devices creates a grey area, which can run a high risk for employers. One way to control this is to have clear guidelines on who is allowed to use their own device, perhaps limiting use to certain job roles. Another popular way is to create a ‘Bring your own device’ policy (BYOD), where employers set up a system for authorising the use of personal phones and keep a record of who is using their device for work purposes. Staff who use personal devices holding customer data should consider: n Using a strong password to lock their device n Making sure the device is capable of locking automatically n Enabling a setting whereby data is automatically deleted if an incorrect password is entered after several attempts, or if the device is inactive for a period of time

When not to DIY Most of us can turn our hand to painting, joinery or plumbing, but when it comes to electrical work, think twice, suggests Steve Owens, Managing Director Buzz Electrical Ltd Every year in the UK, fatalities and thousands of injuries are caused by faulty electrics in the home. Unsafe installations lead to fires and electric shocks, so while it’s tempting to save money, this is one area in which it’s worth investing in an expert. Safety is not the only reason. Many people don’t realise that in 2005 the Government introduced electrical safety rules into the Building Regulations (amended in 2013) with which most fixed electrical work in the home must, by law, comply. Part P Approval is required when any home is sold. Part P states that anyone carrying out domestic electrical work must ensure that it is designed and installed to protect people from fire and electric shocks. It applies to any changes made to existing installations, including any parts that have been rewired. All electrical work in a home, garden, conservatory
lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Autumn 2018
or outbuilding must meet the Building Regulations. Apart from some types of minor work, any new installation must either be reported to the local authority building control, or be carried out by an electrician who is registered with one of the Government-approved scheme providers. Three electrical jobs that require a qualified electrician are: n Rewiring Any property not rewired in the last 25 years could be potentially dangerous and may need upgrading, at least in part. n Fuse Board Upgrades Your fuse board may need replacing if it lacks RCD (residual current device) protection (a sensitive
safety device that cuts off electricity if it detects any faults or current changes), if there are issues with the meter, or if it’s over ten years old. n New Sockets Although they may seem easy to install, these require a full circuit test to ensure no overloading and safety compliance. Buzz Electrical’s team of sixteen fully qualified electricians, approved by the NICEIC, offers exceptional personal service locally - look out for our bright red vans. For advice on any electrical project please call us on 01386 423600, visit buzzelectrical.co.uk or follow us on facebook and twitter.

Embracing Innovation Anthea Garley, Kitchen Designer at Evesham based Vale Kitchens introduces some of the latest innovations for high tech kitchens Technology now seeps into every aspect of our lives and the kitchen has always been a place of constant innovation in terms of design, gadgets and appliances. The team at Vale Kitchens embraces technology which enables the hub of the home to work more efficiently, making life simpler every day. In our Evesham showroom, you’ll find expanded ranges from hi-tech companies such as De Dietrich who have an incredible 300 years of heritage and have recently launched items such as the zoneless induction hob and a steam cooker with “chef ” mode. We’ve also broadened our range of Fisher & Paykel appliances, known for their huge fridges with

Activesmart technology (controlling the weather in your fridge) and their super-efficient DishDrawers (a split Dishwasher designed for economy and convenience). The Instant Hot Water tap has been around for a few years and the design of it continues improve
in efficiency and ease of use. The Quooker gives you instant access to 100° water, is safe, energy efficient and has multiple uses. It means tasks like cooking pasta, preparing noodles or making coffee are extra speedy. It saves you money too. The patented high-vacuum insulation ensures that the Quooker’s standby usage is just 3 pence a day. For even more efficiency, choose a COMBI tank, a single, amazingly economical way to produce both hot and boiling water. As a Miele Centre, Vale is always in touch with the latest innovations. One of the most exciting new product launches of recent months has been the introduction of the Miele Downdraft Extractor. At the touch of a button, it is raised and activated from the worktop, ready to extract unwanted cooking vapours and odours. Once the job is done and it’s no longer needed, it simply disappears. more. Recently, a range of animal feedstuffs have been added to the range. What do you hope to achieve? The development of the new rural store at Fleet Lane, Bredon will offer a valuable service to the local community, especially at a time when we’ve seen the loss of a major rural retailer, leaving people wondering where to source these type of goods. Our aim is to become a one stop country shop for rural essentials offering a complete package ranging from larger agricultural equipment for farmers right through to the small tools and accessories for householders needing home and garden goods. Completion of the building has been scheduled for mid-September. PET CARE
LITV PROMOTION
Pain Management How chronic pain can be alleviated, with vet Lizzie Threadingham BVSc MRCVS GPcert WVA&CPM Chronic pain in cats and dogs is a common problem which seriously affects quality of life. Yet the symptoms animals present when they are in discomfort can be hard to spot and are often mistaken for the inevitable side effects of ageing. Typically, owners will present their pet when its health and mobility has declined significantly. Once they have a diagnosis and look back with the benefit of hindsight, they often realise that there have been a series of changes which have accumulated over time. It’s a pattern we see with the most caring of owners because animals are naturally hardy and will disguise their pain until it becomes severe.
Excessive sleeping, avoidance of stairs or unusual snappiness can be subtle signs of pain Chronic pain can stem from many sources including arthritis, injury and surgery. Obvious signs of discomfort include lameness, soreness in a particular spot, loss of appetite, stiffness after rest and lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Autumn 2018
reluctance to go for walk. However, other symptoms such as excessive sleeping, avoidance of stairs or unusual snappiness can be more subtle. For this reason, it’s worth getting your pet checked if you notice any minor changes in their appetite, behaviour or demeanour. Traditionally, medication was the only treatment for chronic pain but today, we provide individual packages of care via our team of trained professionals which can combine drugs with physiotherapy and/or a western scientific approach to acupuncture. Happily, alongside some clever lifestyle changes we see a range of excellent results. Chronic pain can be alleviated or managed to the extent that owners often describe their pets as experiencing a whole new lease of life. If you have any concerns about
your pet suffering from pain, the first step is to see a vet. For help and advice on any small animal issue please call our friendly team.

By day I run an office based business but in my spare time I love being outdoors, photographing all things nature, in the Worcestershire countryside. I bought my first camera five years ago off a tree surgeon who’d purchased a DSLR kit with a view to taking spectacular shots from the tree tops, but found it was too
bulky. As soon as I got it I realised I had no idea how to use it. I started with the basic manual, reading magazines and watching videos but I’ve found the best way to learn is to practise. Since then I’ve attended workshops, got out and about a lot, and joined a local camera club where I found many long standing members willing to mentor me. I’ve tried all genres of photography but macro nature photography is
my favourite. It’s tricky to master (I’m definitely still learning) and requires such intense concentration that I often find myself forgetting to breathe! I have hundreds of images on my computer still waiting to be processed. Many will not be worthy of print but make a lovely record of the wildlife I’ve seen. I’m so happy to have found a hobby I love, that helps me be still, and brings me so close to nature.
Red Squirrel One of my favourite images, taken on my first trip to Scotland on a wildlife photography workshop. The tutor knows of an area of coniferous woodland which the squirrels love to frequent. This one was beautiful; the light was ideal and she sat for a while and raised her tail in the iconic position.

WILDLIFE
Mistle Thrush on Berries Taken on a bush in our front garden. It was a miserable winter’s day and I was indoors, upstairs. I did a double take when I spotted this bird - we’d never had one visit the garden before. This shot was taken in a panic, through the glass, before the bird flew off (and I knocked the camera lens against the window!).
I’m a member of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust and love to visit the Wetlands Reserve at Upton Warren, where there are a number of hides - it’s a beautiful area to sit, relax and watch the many varieties of birds. I try to weave my hobby into my everyday life. We have a nice established garden with lots of different bird feeders so we get plenty of insects, bugs and butterflies visiting to practise on. It’s perfect when time doesn’t allow me to go on a dedicated photography trip - I can just step outside of the back door and see what I can find. 52

WILDLIFE
Robin with wings wide open Taken in the back garden. We have a tree at the top with this large cone hanging, which I’d covered in peanut butter for the birds. I’d noticed the robin coming frequently to feed, often from the base of the cone. I set up the camera on a tripod and attached a remote camera trigger so that I could retreat indoors, and leave him undisturbed. I focused the camera on the base of the cone and set it to take a burst of shots once the robin was in view. I ended up with over a hundred photos from several of his visits, many out of focus or with him in odd positions, but this one was a winner. Shutter speed was 1/2500 second to freeze the action.
If you’d like the chance to see your photographs featured in print please call 01684 773135 or email lisa@lifeinthevillage.co.uk. Images must be minimum 300dpi. lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Autumn 2018

Bredon Gig2Give Bredon Gig2Give launched in 2016 we’re proud to say that we’ve raised over £7,500.
Save the date for Bredon Gig2Give on 24th November suggests Martin Miles So what’s it all about? Bredon Gig2Give is back by popular demand. This year the date is 24th November and the venue is Bredon Village Hall. It’s a fabulous night of live music, a chance to catch up with old friends and make some new. For 2018, there will be an exciting new line up of bands to enable you to party all night. There will also be our now infamous Gin and Prosecco Bars, a silent auction and a raffle with some extraordinary prizes. Your ticket will also include a pig roast pork bap or new vegetarian alternative. Look out for ticket details coming soon with an early bird option. Why did you start running Gig2Give? It makes for a fabulous village night but there is of course a serious side to it - fund raising. Since Bredon Gig2Give launched in 2016 we’re
lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Autumn 2018
proud to say that we’ve raised over £7,500. The funds have benefited various local causes such as Bredon Community Play and Recreation which has done so much work to regenerate the community spaces around Bredon for everyone to enjoy. A contribution was also made towards the defibrillator which is to be installed outside the Drapers Spar, Bredon. National charities have also received donations including West Midlands Air Ambulance, Parkinson’s UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Why support this year’s event? This year our chosen charities are Mind, Bredon Community Play and Recreation and there is to be an exciting new opportunity which will be known as Bredon’s Choice. Closer to the event we will be launching a suggestions page where anyone can apply for Gig2Give for monies to help fund a local project. More details on how this will work will be made available shortly. How can we support the event? At this stage the most important thing is to keep the date free - 24th November 2018. Tickets will be available from late September onwards. Please call direct on 07872 049838 or email martin.bg2g@outlook.com or emma.bg2g@outlook.com If any local business owners would like to sponsor our event or provide a raffle prize please get in touch; your business will be advertised during the event. All are welcome and we are looking forward to seeing you all for another fabulous night of live music. 55
LOCAL CHARITY
with Dr Gill Rouse LINC is a local cancer support charity that has helped patients receiving intense chemotherapy within Gloucestershire NHS Trust for almost 20 years. As a result of her vision, director and co-founder Dr Gill Rouse has been awarded a Heart of Gloucestershire Hero in the Community Award and named as one of the 50 Greatest Gloucestershire Women. We asked her how she made it happen. How was the idea for LINC hatched? It was February 1998, I was working as a Haematologist at Cheltenham Hospital and I’d just had major surgery for cancer. My colleague, the late Dr Robert Dalton, who was the senior Haematology Consultant there at the time, came to visit me on the ward. As doctors, we were frustrated with some aspects of the facilities for our patients. In particular, they had to endure a long wait to get blood test results in the Oncology Outpatient department which was at the opposite end of the hospital to the Haematology department. Dr Dalton decided I should have a project for my convalescence! He gave me the goal to raise £30,000 to buy a blood analyser which would or reduce patient waiting time. So I did. How did you begin to go about doing that? I was a doctor with little experience of fundraising so I began with 56
small steps, organising events such as a dinner at Chavenage House and a murder mystery at Boddington Manor, compiling a recipe book and enlisting support from my network of friends and family. With each activity, LINC became more wellknown and we were featured more in the local press. We have worked hard on maintaining our reputation locally and our transparency so that donors can see exactly where their money is spent. Few people could achieve such things during their recovery from cancer treatment. What gave you the strength to do so? The determination to help others provided the motivation for me to get out of bed each morning. Trying
Credit: www.thousandwordmedia.com
to find solutions to other people’s problems prevented me from dwelling on my health issues and gave me a positive focus to move forward. Do you remember the first patient to benefit? Hardly had we met our first goal when a young mum presented with acute leukaemia. Her baby was only a few months old, her husband wanted to be with her, and they had no family nearby. She needed prolonged inpatient treatment in an isolation unit but was refusing to have it because there was no one to look after the baby. It was Autumn 2018 | lifeinthevillage.co.uk
LOCAL CHARITY at this moment that the concept of LINC’s Patient & Family Support took off. Dr Dalton persuaded the patient to have treatment, LINC funded childcare for the baby and the charity supported the family financially for several months. But that’s not the end of the story. In 2015, the ‘baby’ ran the London Marathon for LINC supported by her mum. How has LINC grown since the early days? LINC has grown considerably and helps a huge variety of patients when they need it the most. We’re now a team of five and have to raise a minimum £100k just to cover our salary bill. What services does the charity offer? The treatment of acute leukaemia involves intensive chemotherapy over several months. Patients are nursed in isolation in small en suite rooms on Rendcomb Ward at Cheltenham General. Isolation is absolutely essential as patients are immune compromised and unable to fight even the smallest of infections. The air supply in the rooms is strictly controlled and patients’ diets are monitored, again to avoid any chance of infection. Coming to terms with mortality is not easy whether you are the patient, family member or friend. LINC funds all the extra things that help to improve care and make a stay in hospital slightly more comfortable. This includes purchasing equipment to help in the diagnosis and treatment of leukaemia such as patient monitoring machines, reclining chairs, bed top trays, new fridges and televisions with Sky TV. LINC has also funded a new outpatient facility at Cheltenham General Hospital and a state of the lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Autumn 2018
art Haematology Day Centre at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. How long does LINC’s support continue? LINC is there to help from the time of diagnosis, throughout treatment and for as long as required. We’re often involved for some time after the patient has left hospital, helping them to readjust to the outside world. Relationships can often falter under the pressures of intense treatment as enormous strains are put on everyone involved. Over the years we came to see that funding a clinical psychologist was a vital part of the help that should be on offer. LINC therefore agreed to fund two sessions a week initially and from October 2015, a second clinical psychologist for three days a week. We’ve been delighted with the help given to both patients and families. How did the charity get involved with medical research? When Dr Dalton sadly died in 2003, LINC set up the Robert Dalton Leukaemia Fellowship which funds a post graduate student studying for a PhD in either Leukaemia or Lymphoma. Our latest research fellow completed her PHD in 2017 which brings the
total to three. LINC is currently funding a haematology nurse who is researching treatment and coordinating data for unusual lymphomas that do not respond to the usual treatments.
I cannot underestimate the positive impact that the LINC Charity had for us a family. Gareth – LINC patient What’s LINC’s latest project? In 2017 we raised £250k to upgrade the eight high dependency en suite rooms on Rendcomb Ward to create walk in showers that accommodate a wheelchair. We’re proud to share that the building work and refurbishments began in June - it will be of huge benefit to our severely ill patients. Tell us more about your personal journey. What inspired you to alter your career path? Having been a haematologist and worked with so many patients I am more than aware of the help and support they need to get through their treatment.

What was the vision that helped you grow the charity? Determination to support patients and give them the best possible care has been my vision since the beginning. The treatment of leukaemia is gruelling so although the number of patients is small, the amount of help that they require is enormous. What type of fundraising helped LINC grow? We focus on hosting a range of fabulous events, supported by our fantastic patrons who include the Rt Hon Countess Bathurst, Laurence & Jackie LlewelynBowen, the artist PJ Crook and Sir Geoff Hurst. Our Head of Fundraising, Claire Charlton, meets people in the community, organises events, makes grant applications and maintains our social media. It’s a massive team effort, supported by our many volunteers. So what’s happening this season? LINC’s Opera Gala Evening is taking place on Saturday 27th October at Pittville Pump Room. This is a Black tie event that includes a three course dinner and opera. We’re also hosting Christmas
Gill Rouse with patron Jackie Llewelyn-Bowen
Sparkle when you can come and enjoy mulled wine and mince pies at Malmaison on Wednesday 28th November. There will be a lovely selection of Christmas stalls and demonstrations. What have been the highlights of your job? Meeting some delightful people. The most special occasion was the Jose Carreras Concert in 2003 and having dinner with Jose and Bryn Terfel. In terms of achievements, overseeing the successful completion of the building of the LINC Outpatient Department, the extension of the Edward Jenner unit in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and the refurbishment of the LINC staff
58
Rendcomb Ward side rooms, have been the most satisfying. What inspires you when the going gets tough? Seeing how these patients have to cope in isolation makes you want to do anything you can to help. Their lives are literally put on standstill. I will continue to do whatever is possible to support them in any way they need. How can we help LINC? LINC organises a variety of fundraising events throughout the year with something to appeal to everyone’s interests so please come along. The charity also values the help that we receive from our volunteers so we are always looking for new recruits. If you would like to receive more information please contact the LINC team on 0300 422 4422 or email ghn-tr.linc@nhs.net You can make a donation online at www.lincfund.org Please also follow us on social media so you can keep informed on our work, our fundraising events and of course our patient stories: Facebook www.facebook.com/ LINCfund Twitter @L_I_N_C Instagram @linc_1998 Autumn 2018 | lifeinthevillage.co.uk
