Having never sold a house in the UK before, we found the whole process daunting, not just selling but who to choose to market our home. We called in many agents, all with great experience in the market, but one company shone out like a star and under the helm of Craig Hughes and his team, it was obvious who could steer us through this arduous task. The whole process, from photos to customer service, to receiving our full asking price, was an absolute pleasure. For a free, The relationship between ourselves and the office from day one no obligation was exactly what we expected and more! Cheers Craig, thanks to vaulation of your you, Rebecca and all the team! Team in the true sense! property call 01242 220080

EDITOR’S LETTER What makes you feel free? With my husband completing a professional diploma, my daughter studying for her Finals and my son sitting his A’ levels, it’s a subject that has come up a lot in our house lately. For us, it means balancing body and mind on a daily basis whether by clocking up miles on the cross trainer, lifting weights, or stretching out on a yoga mat. Nothing beats fresh air and exercise for rebooting the brain. Freedom means different things to us all and the desire to find it can be life changing. For many years, the need to feel free has been a driving force in my life; it gave me the nudge I needed to become self-employed and helps me shape how I run my business every day. Yet the smallest, most mundane activities can also make us feel free. Lying in bed listening to the birds, running on Bredon Hill and stockpiling paperbacks are simple ‘freedoms from’ and ‘freedoms for’ that are important to me. For many of us, summer is the season when we feel most free so this issue we bring you lots of fresh options. With breathtaking gardens to explore, rural events to try and personal style advice to experiment with, there’s loads to help you lead an unfettered life. Be sure to check out our new giveaways and money saving offers. For daily updates please visit ww www ww.lifeinthevillage.co.uk w or connect with us on Twitter @lisalambon. Until the autumn,

WILDLIFE This summer make the most of the weather and head out into our beautiful countryside in search of birds of prey. Take a walk along the river Avon, anywhere where it meanders from Pershore to Evesham, on Bredon Hill or the Malverns and you might spot buzzards, hobbies, kestrels, sparrowhawks and even red kites in all their magnificence. Download routes from the Vale and Spa website; it’s a great resource for local walks. Just visit www.valeandspa.co.uk/ explore/walking/ Buzzard When I was a child buzzards were rare. So rare, that on long car
12
journeys I filled time by playing a game with my dad where if I spotted one, I’d shriek ‘buzzard!’ and feel proud to have done so. Today, buzzards are our most ubiquitous bird of prey. This is the bird, above any other, that you’ll see gliding high above the Worcestershire landscape. Look for a bird that holds its wings in a shallow ‘v’ and sports a broad, fanned tail. At this time of year, listen out too for the high-pitched ‘mewling’ sound of the youngsters asking their parents for food. All buzzards are brown yet their individual colour varies from pale through to dark. They have squat necks and broad, fingered, wing-tips. Whilst they’re often spotted sitting on top of a telegraph pole, it’s not uncommon to see them apparently loafing around in fields. Look closely, though, and you’ll notice that they’re
doing anything but being idle. They’re looking. Waiting. Watching for the tell-tale movement of soil that indicates the presence of the worms to which they are so partial, despite their large size. As well as worm-hunting, buzzards can often be seen ripping apart roadkill. I used to think they were lazy but what I didn’t appreciate back then was that these birds, like many of us, will take easy pickings over hard work if they can get them! Their main prey is rabbit and it was the loss of Britain’s rabbits to Myxomatosis in the 1950s and 1960s, added to their persecution by farmers and gamekeepers, that was one of the main reasons for their decline during those years. Next spring, visit Bredon Hill or Broadway Hill and keep your eyes to the sky and you may be able to spot a pair of buzzards displaying

to each other. Watching them soar high on a thermal, rocket down to earth with wings held tight in to their body, then suddenly stretching out again to slow down their descent, is a spectacle you will never tire of. Hobby When spring brings the swallows and house martins back home from a winter spent in Africa, hobbies are never far behind. These elegant summer visitors have been gracing our skies in south Worcestershire for the last couple of months, hunting for food for themselves

and their young. The name ‘hobby’ derives from the French hober, ‘to jump around’, and this perfectly describes the acrobatic abilities of these impeccably-designed raptors. Slate-grey above and pale below, with black streaks on the belly and brick-red ‘trousers’, they have a white throat and cheeks, dark moustache and mask. With long, slender tail and pointed scimitarshaped wings, this bird can turn rapidly to catch prey mid-flight. Some hobbies specialise in catching dragonflies, eating them on the wing, whilst others are adept at taking
swallows and even swifts. Although hobbies can be found over land, they are mostly seen hunting over wetlands or rivers. I spotted my first hobby at Croome near Pershore. It was a couple of hours before sunset and I was taking in the view across the historic estate from the Park Seat to the Malverns. Over the river below me a bird was swooping backwards and forwards. Through binoculars I saw it suddenly change direction and, with talons out in a seemingly impossible manoeuvre, catch a dragonfly; it was a spectacular sight.

WILDLIFE
Kestrel A few minutes spent watching a kestrel hovering at eye-level with its pointed wings held out can be awe-inspiring. Christened ‘The Windhover’ by Gerald Manley Hopkins in his poem of the same name, this widespread bird has the astonishing ability to keep its head perfectly still during flight whilst the wind hammers and batters its body.
14
If viewed on a slowed-down video, its head, whilst appearing rigid, does actually move a millimetre or two as it locates its prey – usually a field vole or mouse - triangulating and locking down its position with pinpoint accuracy. A kestrel will hover at up to 20 metres above ground before gently dropping its height, constantly scanning the ground, and eventually
plummeting to earth to catch its prey. As well as eating lizards and even large insects, kestrels also make great pirates; there are numerous tales of them chasing barn owls and stealing their prey! Both male and females are a beautiful chestnut colour. Adult females have a brown head and dark crossbars on their wings whereas males have contrasting slate grey

WILDLIFE
heads and a creamy underside which is speckled with black. As with almost all birds of prey, the females are bigger than males, in this case just smaller than a feral pigeon. We’re not sure why but perhaps the most convincing reason given is that since the female spends more time on the nest she needs greater energy, mass and strength to defend her young. The male, being
lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Summer 2019
smaller, hunts smaller items of prey, but is often more prolific in doing so. Sparrowhawk The sparrowhawk is the bird of prey that most of us are likely to encounter at close quarters, as they hunt in the garden or flash by the car on a country lane. Like many people who nurture ‘their’ garden birds, I confess to a love-hate relationship with this
species. One of our smaller birds of prey, about the size of a kestrel it will often visit gardens looking for food. The logical part of me understands the workings of the food chain and that a sparrowhawk is a sign that the natural world is thriving. The emotional side of me, however, is rooting for the underdog, willing ‘my’ birds to fly away. It’s unfair of me as the sparrowhawk needs birds to feed its
15
WILDLIFE
young just as much as the robin needs worms and caterpillars. Sparrowhawks are excellent hunters, sometimes ambushing their prey from a perch, other times flying low and suddenly changing direction to fool it. Adult females and males can be distinguished by size and by colour. Females are much bigger, with browner plumage, and will tackle anything from finches, tits and sparrows to larger birds such as collared doves and wood pigeons. Older males have chests of deep rust, a white belly and wings of slate blue/grey. As with buzzards, sparrowhawk numbers plummeted with the use of pesticides half a century ago. Highly
16
toxic agrochemicals both poisoned them directly and caused them to lay eggs with shells that were far too thin to survive. In the 1960s Midlands, they were only found in northern Staffordshire. Thankfully, following the banning of organochlorides and increased legal protection, sparrowhawks, like otters and other wildlife, have begun to bounce back. Today, whether we live in a town or a village of south Worcestershire, many of us will have the mixed blessing of seeing one hunt in our garden. Red kite Increasing numbers of red kites are now being seen locally. These large birds are more graceful than
buzzards, as though they are utterly in their element floating in the sky. Distinguished by angled red wings with flashes of white feathers midway along, it has a distinct fork-tail with black wingtips that looks as if it has been dipped in black ink. Their beautiful red-orange chest and underbelly contrasts with their greywhite head. Look closely and you may see them hang in the air, only using that forked tail to maintain their position. Widespread in the early nineteenth century, red kites were once considered common scavengers in the city of London. Back then, they were seen as both priceless devourers of human rubbish and annoying thieves of valuable supplies (there are even stories of them taking food out of hands). Being relatively inured to humans, they suffered terribly from deliberate persecution and fell foul of Victorian efforts to clean up our cities. However, after more than 100 years of concerted conservation work, including several reintroduction programmes, this beautiful bird has been brought back from the edge of extinction for us all to wonder at once more. STYLE
Petal power Personal style advice from Kate Evans, Image Consultant and Coach With the recent glorious (and not so glorious!) weather floral prints have been out in force. Personally, I don’t wear flowers often but I can be persuaded once in a while; I’m certainly partial to the odd floral shoe or pretty dress. How keen you are on florals is linked to your Style Personality. If you tend to lean towards the romantic/ frilly / lacy / girly side of style then you will be all over them. For those of you who can’t get enough of anything with a flower here is my guide on how to wear them best.
Make sure the principal colour in your floral is a good one for you Size matters Consider the size of the print. If you’re petite, smaller and more delicate prints are great. If you’re of average height then a medium size pattern will work well and if you’re grande (5’7” and taller) then go for something a little bigger and bolder.
with your colouring and the outfit is shown off to its best, pick out one colour from within the pattern and use it for your accessories.
a floral print embossed on them. It’s a great way of enjoying ‘just a touch’ if you don’t want to make too much of a statement.
Shape up Wear florals on your bottom half if you are top-heavy and on your top half if you are bottom-heavy. Remember; whenever you wear your print is where the eye will be drawn so use flowers to show off your best bits.
Love colour Make sure the principal colour in your floral is a good one for you. To ensure everything harmonises
Funky feet Embellished footwear is everywhere this season, so you may want to consider trainers with
Subtle statements If you want to do florals in a low key way then consider customising your look by adding a brooch or scarf with a floral design to your outfit. Scarves also look great tied around your handbag if it’s too warm to wear one around your neck. I hope that helps. Staying safe Vet Brad Cooper on issues that often affect pets during the summer One of the best things about summer is getting out and about in the sunshine. Like us, most dogs love exploring but adventures can bring hazards, the results of which we often see in clinic. It’s worth planning for the season ahead to give your pet the best chance of staying safe and healthy. Heatstroke Folly Gardens recommends that you never leave your dog in a car unattended. Dogs die in hot cars every year, often causing devastation to owners who thought it was safe if the window was open or it was only for a few minutes. Dogs can’t regulate their bodies like we can and a car left in the sunshine, even in cold weather, can rapidly heat to a life threatening temperature. For the same reason, pets should not be locked in a conservatory or sunny room. Always ensure they have access to cold water as panting reduces fluids which must be replenished. Hot weather can make exercise a problem. All dogs need a walk, even on the hottest days, but try taking them out early in the morning or
Never leave your pet trapped in a hot, sunny room lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Summer 2019
late at night to avoid the risk of overheating or scalding paws on pavements. It’s also a good idea to get long or dense coats clipped. Stings Insects that move, fly and buzz are intriguing to pets who may spend hours trying to catch them. It’s amusing but can also be dangerous if they are stung on the eyes, nose or lips. Stings can cause pain, swelling of the airways and occasionally, an allergic reaction. If you hear your pet yelp or whimper, or spot any facial swelling, always get them checked by a vet. Fleas and ticks Year round prevention is better than cure and we can prescribe various parasite controls including tablets, injections, collars and spot-on treatments, with discounts via our Folly Care Club. To find one that will suit your lifestyle, or for any other pet advice, please call our friendly team on 01684 292244.

GARDENS
Shaping water RHS Chelsea Gold medal winning designer, Richard Mercer, on the unique qualities of water in the garden
Of all the elements we use in garden design, water has the greatest potential to transform a space. The essence of life, it offers us endless possibilities; it can be still as a lake or pond, run gently in a rill or stream, or cascade as a waterfall or fountain. Whatever its form, water has an almost mystical ability to affect our mood, by quietening or stimulating our senses. Since water is integral to any natural landscape, a garden without it will often make us feel unsettled, as if something is missing. In our latest project, a large plot spanning two acres, water combined with stone has acted as both a backdrop and focal point

in different areas. Our brief was to enhance an existing woodland garden featuring mature trees and shrubs to complement a newly built home. After surveying the space and getting to know our clients’ likes and dislikes, we drew up a wishlist and developed several options on paper. As always, we took care to maximise the existing mature planting. The approved design was inspired by curves and had a Japanese influence to include box hedging, a gravel garden, flowering shrubs such as azaleas and rhododendrons and a cobbled path leading to a circular patio, summerhouse and outdoor bar. The focal point is a magnificent
split level rock garden set against a vast weeping willow with a zigzag oak bridge and a cascade, created from 30 tonnes of water washed limestone. After meandering over rocks and pebbles, the stream flows around an island planted with a beautiful Japanese maple, Acer palmatum ‘Inaba-shidare’. The cascade is supplied by two pumps. Water emerges at multiple points creating a diverse flow pattern and eventually disappears into a concealed underground tank, making it shallow and relatively safe for children. We regulated the flow precisely to produce a pleasing pitch which creates a soundtrack for the entire garden. The couple are both

LOCAL CHARITY
with Fiona Carter Cotswolds Athlete Support Scheme (CASS) & Friends was set up by Fiona Carter and Michael Deakin in 2015 to offer financial support to young aspiring athletes in the Cotswolds. This grass-roots led organisation achieved charitable status in 2017 and is already supporting local young people aged twelve to eighteen. Fiona, a passionate sportswoman who has won a bronze medal in both the European and World duathlon Championships, explains why they are making it happen. Pursuing the path of elite sport is a huge challenge for any young person. Talent is a prerequisite but success also demands courage, determination and personal sacrifice. A teenager who seriously follows their sport soon finds that it becomes a daunting commitment, not only affecting every aspect of their lifestyle but that of their family too. Training, travelling to events and paying entrance fees, buying equipment and accessing specialist coaching can be expensive, and there is little support available to help with the costs. Although entry into sport through schools and clubs is inexpensive and available to all, once athletes progress from foundation levels to compete at county, national and international level, the costs of participation start to rise. Currently, there is nothing in place to assist them. National Lottery and Sports 38

Aid funding is available for the elite, but getting to the top levels is a long and arduous journey and the costs for the average family can be prohibitive. Funded totally from public donations, CASS & Friends seeks to provide assistance to ease the financial burden on families with gifted youngsters. Working with local schools, we identify gifted children, form a relationship with them and their family, coaches and PE teachers, assess their situation and provide grants where appropriate to help them succeed. Full details of our process can be found online. We cannot help every athlete with every piece of expenditure, but we can make a contribution which may make the real

difference between following a dream and having to give up. CASS & Friends is absolutely delighted to have Michael Edwards, better known as Eddie the Eagle as our patron and is hugely grateful for all of his support. Born in Cheltenham, Eddie learnt to ski at his local dry ski slope and quickly became an accomplished downhill skier. At the 1988 Winter Olympics he became the first competitor since 1928 to represent Great Britain in ski jumping. Eddie has since become famous for personifying the Olympic spirit and for his determination to represent his country without any form of funding. His approach and attitude
towards sport and competition exactly personifies the objectives of CASS & Friends. Please help us to invest in the future of aspiring athletes in the Cotswolds. What we have already seen from the young people we support is that it leads to increased confidence and well-being, a belief that they can achieve their sporting goals, and ultimately pursue a career in sport. Over 95% of all money raised goes directly to our athletes. It would be great to look back in five years and know that our support led to a national, international or Olympic medal for someone in our local area. www.cassandfriends.org

RECIPES
Perfect for summer gatherings, enjoy this simple recipe from Cotswolds based Meg Rivers Artisan Bakery. Polenta flour gives cakes a wonderful yellow colour with a pleasing grainy texture and has the added bonus of being suitable for those with an intolerance to wheat. Fresh lemon juice and zest act as a counterpoint to the dense, buttery flavour. Serves 8 INGREDIENTS
2 large lemons 220g/15 tablespoons salted butter, soft 220g/1 cup plus 2 tablespoons (caster) sugar 4 eggs, lightly beaten 190g/1 1/3 cups ground almonds
125g/1 cup polenta/ cornmeal 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 18cm/7inch round cake pan, base lined with baking parchment
METHOD
• Preheat the oven to 170C (325F) gas 3 • Grate the zest from both lemons, and squeeze the juice from just one. • In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy ffy. y Add the eggs one at a time, beating between each addition, then stir in the lemon juice and zest, followed by the ground almonds, polenta/cornmeal and baking powder. • Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake pan, smooth level with a palette knife and bake in the preheated oven for 80-90 minutes. A skewer inserted in the middle should come out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to stand for a while. When cool enough to handle, run a knife around the inside of the pan and turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. • The cake will keep for 4-5 days in an airtight container. ww www ww.megrivers.co.uk w

Belle House
Moules marinière Try this quick summer supper from Steve Waites of Belle House
serves 2 INGREDIENTS
1 kilo of mussels 2 diced shallots 1 clove of garlic 1 cup of white wine 2 cups of double cream Chopped parsley to finish
METHOD
• Wash the mussels under plenty of cold running water. Discard any open ones that won’t close when lightly squeezed. • Pull out the tough, fibrous beards protruding from between the tightly closed shells and then knock off any barnacles with a large knife. Give the mussels another quick rinse to remove any little pieces of shell. • Heat the pan until very hot. Once the pan is smoking add the mussels. • Add shallots, garlic and wine then cover the pan and shake to move the mussels around so they cook/steam evenly for 3-4 minutes. • Take off the lid and look at the mussels; if the shells are still closed, put the lid back on and carry on steaming, checking regularly. They are ready when the mussels are all open. • Add the cream until it boils, then take it off the heat and sprinkle with chopped parsley to serve.
