Welcome... … to your new look Cotswold Edge Directory. Hopefully, you are already clear that from this issue, our four magazines will be known as Life in the Village, each with a sub heading reflecting the area it covers. Bringing together the name of our print publications with our website and twitter account means that there are now three ways for you to access information on local country living under one name. My work - in person, in print and on twitter - is all about creating connections. Five times a year, I have the task of putting together four magazines. After weeks spent in communication, the final stage of weaving the pages together feels a bit like knitting a Fair Isle jumper with only the hint of a pattern. I know that there must be sleeves and a neck but it’s complicated and there are so many threads that have to come together. Much of how the final product shapes up lies beyond my control. It depends on what is going on locally, who gets in touch and the sort of contributions that other people make. Seeing what happens when our various offerings come together in one place is what makes it fun. And now, we are able to replicate that dynamic on social media. I’m so grateful for all your support on twitter because already, we have created a vibrant community which is making things happen. It extends beyond the confines of our print distribution and enables us to link to all kinds of being and doing that are related to country living. It perfectly complements print, helping us to keep in touch personally, in real time and as often as we wish. There is so much potential. Our aim is to keep making Life in the Village better for us all. If you can spare a moment, please tell us what you think of our changes and how you would like to be connected. Your feedback will help us ensure we move in a direction that is relevant and fresh. Until next time,

On music...

INTERVIEW: Lisa Lambon

Julian Lloyd Webber Julian Lloyd Webber, one of the world’s most influential classical musicians, was forced to step down from public performance in 2014 due to a neck injury. This spring, he begins a special tour. Joined by his cellist wife Jaixin Lloyd Webber and pianist Pam Chawden, Julian will take his audience on an historical and musical journey, giving an insight into his extraordinary life. 12

Music, amongst all the great arts, is the language which penetrates most deeply into the human spirit, reaching people through every barrier, disability, language and circumstance. This is why it has been my dream to bring music back into the lives of those people whose lives are especially prone to stress and suffering... so that it might comfort, heal and bring delight.

Your show promises to be a kind of on stage autobiography. Tell us more about the format. I’ll be telling stories and anecdotes of touring, recording sessions, concerts and TV shows to link with a new presentation of rare video footage of me talking and performing with people like Nigel Kennedy, Elton John, Katherine Jenkins, Tim Rice, Yehudi Menuhin, Joaquin Rodrigo, Cleo Laine, Stephane Grappelli and many others. Jaixin will illustrate by playing excerpts of music that have been important in my life including Faure's Elegy, Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Music of the Night and Rachmaninov's Cello Sonata through to composers like William Lloyd Webber, Frank Bridge, JS Bach and Philip Glass. The format is deliberately fluid with lots of time for audience questions so it will vary every night. It’s suitable for all the family and I’d love people to bring their children because I can offer insight into what it’s really like to be on the road as a musician.

we do need people to plan ahead by bringing along their own cello. You played your final concert in Malvern. What did you take away from that night? It was an extraordinary evening. I’d just made this recording of English Music for Strings with the English Chamber Orchestra and I knew that when it came to playing heavy, louder, physically taxing music on the cello I couldn't do it anymore because I’d lost the power in my bowing arm. I knew I could get through the Malvern concert because I was only playing for a short time, but I realised that I wouldn't be able to do what was planned subsequently so I had to call it a day. It was the most moving concert. The orchestra were wonderful to me and there was a great atmosphere in the hall. I was playing music I loved and the connection to Elgar and Malvern made it very special and strangely appropriate.

You’ve described stepping down from concerts as a bereavement. And each show includes the What has sustained you since chance of a cello masterclass? then? I was devastated because We’d love it if any young cellists there were a lot of things I still could come along together with wanted to do on the cello but it’s their instrument. At the end of not the only thing in the world. I each night there is the possibility had a fantastic 40 years but I have that I will play with Jaixin so to move on. education. I played so much all over the world and saw other systems in action and through the many musicians I’ve worked with I can offer young musicians career advice. Plus I’m conducting so I’m still making music. For 40 years you practised the cello for four or five hours a day. After stepping down, you had banned yourself from playing completely but what is the situation now? I play a little bit every morning because I don’t want to lose the skill which took me so long to build up. I still give masterclasses including one recently at Birmingham Conservatoire where I demonstrated a lot but I can’t go out and give public performances of major works. As a cellist your work was all about moving people with music and hundreds of tributes speak of the solace and pleasure you’ve brought. What is it about music that is so special? It has no barriers of any kind so it’s an incredibly direct means of expression. It’s very moving because often, you will have an musician interpreting the work of a composer to an audience so as the musician, you’re like a medium. There’s definitely a spiritual level to making music, particularly from the perspective of a classical performer but it’s true in other 13

genres too. I’m a massive Buddy Holly fan and the way that he could communicate so directly with people was a fantastic gift.

new year often finds us reviewing our personal achievements, looking at what went well and how we might go about setting goals for the year ahead. In business it’s much the same. At Gusterson Palmer & James we have reflected on our achievements in 2014; we are proud of having won the For Sale Sign Analysis independent survey of the most Sold boards on four consecutive occasions and of successfully completing on 126 sales in twelve months. To ensure that we continually improve our services, we’ve considered how those successes were arrived at and looked at what our customers need and expect from us. Although it is now possible to market your property entirely remotely on the internet, the benefits of using a High Street agent should not be underestimated when dealing with one of your most valuable assets.

Whilst technology has made the process of searching for a home more efficient, and Social Media is becoming more influential, there are still many aspects of the sales and letting process that benefit from the human touch and expert local knowledge. Our aim is to make your experience of selling or letting as simple and successful as possible. This year, we will continue to improve on our customers’ experience in several ways. If you prefer to speak to us face to face you will find our office prominently situated in Merstow Green, Evesham with easy parking nearby. Whether you wish to register your search requirements or discuss your property enquiry over a cup of tea or coffee, a friendly welcome is guaranteed.

If you like to keep in touch through Social Media we will be increasing our activity on facebook and twitter and we would love you to ‘like’ or ‘follow’ us. The biggest change, however, is our involvement with the newly launched online property portal OnTheMarket.com. All properties marketed by us will be advertised on this vibrant portal which is set to become a market leader alongside Rightmove which we will continue to use, ensuring maximum exposure for every property. These days, the family love socialising here, lounging around the fire on a selection of chairs and bean bags. In order for any garden to flow, it must have a strong design. The soft landscaping should relate to the hard areas, the house, and its environment. It’s this that we consider our speciality at Rune. Another characteristic of our style is full, lush plantings which will give an instant result but continue to evolve over time. Our process starts with a free consultation as described. Space with Style Winchcombe based family firm Alderwood Construction have been designing and building extensions for over 30 years. We asked Director Craig Siller for advice on how to expand your living space within a fixed budget. What is the most practical way to plan an extension? Inevitably, extensions are all about making compromises. Many householders have ideas about how they would like to expand their space but, without building knowledge, don’t understand the ramifications of what they are proposing. If you want to apply for planning permission for a project it’s a good idea to consult a builder from the start to ensure your plans are 22

practical and affordable. It’s important to fix a budget and plan ahead because in the current economy a good builder is hard to find. Starting the planning process now would usually mean a build date sometime in the autumn. How does the design and build process work? We start with a client meeting at home then survey the property. We aim to gain an understanding of your aspirations,

assess the existing building and consider what type of extension is most practical. Our in-house designer then works through a range of ideas and comes up with an initial proposal which is firmly rooted in the ideal of achieving increased space without undue expense. What design principles do you work to? Every extension should be proportionate to the existing

building, create good flow and have integrity. Taking care of details (such as the shape of the roof in the house pictured above) and the materials used, will ensure the new space is similar in nature to the original house and suits the plot. You can get ideas from looking online, including the gallery of projects on our website. What should I look for in a builder? Seek out a credible, solvent company with a proven track record locally and membership of reputable trade associations. Ask for a detailed schedule of works and a single point of contact. Our focus is on ensuring a balanced and honest

working relationship. The principles of good construction are the same whether we are managing a home extension, a new build or a commercial project. We tailor schemes which are of good design, well built and leave a lasting positive impression.

oes your dog constantly beg for food? Dig the lawn? Or jump up at visitors? Good behaviour is usually indicative of a good quality of life for animal and owner. Conversely, bad habits and fears can put pet and owner under huge strain so if you’ve found yourself changing your routine to fit in with your cat or dog then now is probably time to do something about it. Bad behaviour can stem from natural instincts whilst fears may date back to experiences in early life. In dogs, they are more likely to develop if they require more exercise or are a breed which needs a lot of mental stimulation. However, any pet which suddenly starts to exhibit new behaviour like biting, chewing or urinating in the house should be brought to the attention of a professional because their habit could be an expression of pain or discomfort. As a qualified Vet Nurse (with a background in nursing people) I’ve also studied for a further qualification in Animal Behaviour which enables me to Company Promotion

ZOE’S TOP TIP... offer specialist advice. Problems I deal with include separation anxiety, biting and barking to more unusual fears like hats. Being realistic, there is no quick fix and re-educating your pet will involve a commitment over a period of weeks so I offer an initial consultation, give home -work, then provide continued follow-up advice and support until the issue is resolved. Medications are also available which can help switch your dog’s brain from, ‘anxious mode’ to ‘learning mode,’ reducing the stress response and helping them to accept training. Good socialisation is a lifelong process so I can also advise, pre and post-purchase, on how to limit the likelihood of unwanted habits developing. The process begins from birth so our Puppy Parties are a great place to start. Bad behaviour is a burden that we can help relieve you of. Why not take the first step today by calling on 01684 292244 or 01242 679880 to find out more? Wishing you and your pet well this spring...

CRESCENDO I

The daily ritual of listening to the dawn chorus is one of the simple pleasures offered by the countryside in spring. But what is actually going on? Wendy Carter of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust offers her view.

30

almost couldn’t believe my ears in December as I walked to the local postbox with my last few Christmas cards; it stopped me in my tracks. There it was - from the hedgerow came the rich, fruity song of a male blackcap. It’s only in the last few years that we’ve seen blackcaps overwintering in the UK. Birds that have bred in Britain leave in late summer for Africa and Iberia, returning each spring to help build the dawn chorus into one almighty crescendo. However, an increasing number of blackcaps that have spent the summer in central Europe have begun to migrate here for the winter instead of joining their cousins in warmer climes, risking the potentially harsh British weather over the perils of a longer migration. Birds (in this country it’s usually the males) sing

for two main reasons - to proclaim their rights over territory (and food) and to announce to the female population that they exist. This behaviour peaks in spring and is unusual in winter. If a winter is mild the spring soundtrack will start to build in March when our native breeding birds will be hunting for the best territory in readiness for the mating season. The reason the spring chorus is loudest in the morning is because it’s the best time for birds to defend their territory. Just one morning this spring, why not set your alarm for an hour before you’d normally think of waking up, open your bedroom window and listen to the blackbirds and robins (normally the earliest birds) being joined by wrens, dunnocks and songthrushes? The loudest song, usually with a distinctive trill in the middle, will come from the smallest of these characters – the elusive wren. If, like me, you refer to any wren as ‘Jenny,’ remember that it’s actually only the males that feature in these natural symphonies. Our summer visitors will also be taking part. In this part of the country, throughout April and May, we’re joined by chiffchaffs, willow warblers, garden warblers and whitethroats. Head to a local woodland or small copse with overgrown hedges and you

should be able to hear any or all of these. To each other, their song may be aggressive (or sometimes romantic) and it can be hard for us to distinguish each individual bird’s contribution but it doesn't really matter. Sometimes it’s enough to just sit still and listen, enjoy the chorus and forget about the trials of everyday life.

Succeeding with Water Water can be used to bring life and interest to all styles of garden. RHS Chelsea Gold Medal winning garden designer Richard Mercer offers his advice.

A

chieving good results with water is a specialist art requiring skill in construction as well as creative design. The same principles apply whether you are creating a tiny wildlife pond or a vast lake:  Think of the mood you are trying to evoke. Do you want a calm area to sit in or an energising focal point? If you can’t see a water feature from the house you should be able to hear it; the hidden sound will draw you further into the garden, inviting you to explore.  Be sure to contrast the fluid nature of water with a backdrop of stone and soft planting. Stone is revered for its natural beauty but you can also use metal or timber.  Any type of open water should be brimming. Bringing the water level as high as possible creates the most pleasing effect and will reflect light around your whole garden.  The flow of water must be carefully regulated to create the desired sound effect. While still 34

Company Promotion

water will be tranquil, a babbling brook can be soothing and the rush of a fountain or waterfall will create vibrancy. With skill, it’s possible to vary the sound effects of any water feature to suit your personal preference. It might surprise you that the sheet of water flowing from the metal spout pictured above remained quiet because of the depth of water it fell into. By contrast, the waterfall pictured opposite was engineered so that the water from the final cascade fell onto a large rock at its base. This created a fine, mellow splash which has an energising effect. In another garden in which I installed a stream, the husband and wife preferred differing levels of sound. To please them both, we installed two pumps which could be switched separately, giving the option of different flow rates thus completely changing the sound characteristics of the water from a trickle to a gush.

 Never scrimp on filtration; always oversize the unit for the volume of water intended.  Rock must be hard enough to withstand heavy frosts and immersion in water. A few large pieces, well submerged, will be more convincing than lots of smaller ones. Rocks should be placed so that the grain within them follows through, creating an appealing natural effect.  Consider your budget. We can advise on suitable materials to fit most price brackets. Having trained at Pershore College 20 years ago, been awarded an RHS Chelsea Gold Medal and undertaken many projects, domestic and commercial, I offer a complete design service from a new patio, pergola or fence to a complete garden makeover. I only construct one project at a time and will always be on site myself. Whatever the size or scope of your project, call me on 07860 603598 for your FREE consultation.

Summerhouses of Distinction

Expert advice on new stand alone glass garden buildings from L&L

A Pavilion in white with a polycarbonate roof and laminate flooring, styled as a summerhouse with space for dining

L&L, in tandem with established Welsh supplier, Nordic Garden Buildings, have launched a new 40

range of stand alone glass structures which are ideal as a summerhouse, outdoor dining room, hobby space or even home office. Here, Director, John Lannen explains more.

I

f you’ve spent the winter months longing for warmth and light, our new range of glass garden buildings give you the best chance to enjoy them both throughout the summer season. Traditionally, summerhouses have been made of timber which has its limitations when it comes to warmth, security and longevity.

Company Promotion

The advance of glass technology means that they can now be built from thermally efficient double glazed units creating a more practical, sophisticated building with multiple benefits. Nordic Garden Buildings are supplied to us by a Welsh company that has been manufacturing products from PVCu for 40 years. Their range was launched in Europe where they have been tested in extreme weather conditions and proven to be robust. A glazed structure provides a number of practical advantages over wood. The cost of timber is constantly rising so, surprisingly, glass is now often comparable in price. A glass/PVCu structure is also stronger, more permanent and far more secure. Unlike timber buildings, they need no annual maintenance. Each ones comes complete with multipoint door and window locks and our guarantee. Nordic Garden Buildings come in six colour options and a range of sizes, suitable for every type of home. With a choice of styles of glass, brickwork, roofing and

Bring style to your garden with six colour options air vents, roof vents, windows and air conditioning will ensure a comfortable temperature all year round. Heating can also be added using a electric fan heater, under floor heating or a wood burning stove. Installation is easy and will take our skilled team only one or two days. You don’t need planning permission, just a suitable patio or deck. Your garden building is also portable so you won’t even have to part with it when you move house. Your garden building could be hidden in a secret corner of your garden or situated to offer panoramic views. Furnish it to your taste with a table and chairs, blinds, cushions and candles and you will have a lovely, stylish space in which to relax and unwind. Our new Nordic Garden Buildings outdoor display will help plan your summerhouse. To find out more please visit our Tewkesbury showroom at Red Lane, alongside the river. Hanley Swan Open Gardens The residents of Hanley Swan near Malvern invite you to enjoy a day out at their annual event in support of Hanley churches.

E

njoy a visit to Hanley Swan this May Bank Holiday for our annual ‘Garden Party.’ Hanley Castle is a quintessentially English village with all the desirable hallmarks – a Green, a pond with our very own heron, a majestic oak tree, a pub, a prize winning butcher and a friendly village shop – all held under the

gaze of the glorious Malvern Hills. This year there will be seventeen gardens open, spread all around the village, so you may want to use the various free car parks which will be signposted to enable you to cover more ground. We are lucky to have an eclectic mix of truly lovely horticultural masterpieces of all sizes and genres, tended by owners who will lay out the green carpet for your enjoyment. Your £5 ticket will give you entry to all 3 days, so you can make a real weekend of it. Light lunches and cream teas

Exam Subject

Choices Choosing GCSE options at thirteen is often the first significant decision that a young person will make. So how can parents help? Dr Tony Evans of Prince Henry’s High School offers his thoughts.

A

s we progress through the Spring Term, thousands of teenagers are faced with choices about the subjects they want to take to GCSE and beyond. How, as a parent, should you support your child in making the right decisions? My wife and I recently went through this process for the first time with our own son so I fully appreciate how difficult it can feel. With so many courses available in 2015, it can be hard to understand

by their teachers for several months in terms of the decisions that they need to make. The basic advice, based on a tried and tested model, is to choose subjects that they enjoy and are good at, plus subjects that will be potentially useful for the sort of career they may have in mind. They should not take subjects just because they are new, or because their friends are taking them. If your child is unclear about their future career, it’s also wise to consider how their options might be narrowed if they drop a subject the true value of various options, this becomes even more important and ultimately, what implications when it comes to choosing A Levels different choices will have for your and even thinking ahead towards child’s future. entry requirements for Higher All schools apply a Core Education courses. This new system will be different to the existing grading system that has been used to for many years and no doubt further guidance will be issued by the government in due course. Most schools provide detailed guidance relating to the various qualifications on offer and the nature of the work involved. Schools like mine often have access to an Independent Careers Adviser who can also advise your child. Pupils will normally be supported

New Breast Care Unit Six years ago, Breast Surgeon Steven Thrush had the idea of a dedicated Breast Care Unit at Worcester Hospital. This autumn, his project will come to fruition with the opening of Worcestershire Breast Unit and Haven. We asked him what it will mean. What’s the latest news? At the recent Board meeting of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, the Directors gave the official go-ahead for work to start on the long-awaited Breast Care Unit. The target date for opening is this autumn. When he announced the decision, Harry Turner, the Chairman of the Acute Trust, said, ‘‘We are all very conscious of the thousands of people who have actively worked to raise funds for 56

this very important project. We are delighted to now underwrite the balance of funds still needed so that the project can start sooner rather than wait for all the funds to be raised.” Fiona Charny, Charity Trustee and Chair of the Fundraising Campaign added, “This is a fantastic day for all our wonderful supporters and for women and men throughout the County who encounter breast health problems.

We now need to raise a further £480,000 for all the furniture, internal fittings and furnishings, and the work to the gardens. I am sure that our loyal supporters will rise to the task.’’ In an another development in January, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and national breast cancer charity The Haven announced plans for a Haven centre which will be incorporated within the Breast Care Unit. It’s hard to

believe but in less than 12 months we will be able to stand inside the building. I owe a huge debt of thanks to everyone who has made this possible: all our supporters in the community and all my colleagues at the hospital. I know our supporters will redouble their efforts to raise the final balance. How will The Haven operate within the Breast Unit? The new Breast Unit will improve facilities, reduce the number of locations patients have to attend and help relieve the stress of process. The Haven provides a unique model of care that is fully integrated with hospital medical treatment. It is a global leader in its field and cancer specialists worldwide visit Havens to learn from them. The Haven will form an integral part of the Breast Unit enabling people with breast cancer to benefit from free one-to-

one emotional support and complementary therapies to help relieve the side-effects of treatment and deal with the emotional impact of a diagnosis. This can include up to six free therapies, including counselling, acupuncture, nutritional advice and a session with a specialist Haven breast care nurse. Help is also available through the Haven website, thehaven.org.uk and via an outreach programme. Why is this such an asset locally? 600 people in Worcestershire are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. The scale of this illness is such that it affects us all; everybody knows somebody. This long awaited Unit will make a huge difference to them and their loved ones during very challenging times. Find out more on our website everybodyknowssomebody.co.uk

T

hanks to the 500 or so followers we’ve gained since our last issue, our twitter community continues to grow. When we launched our account eighteen months ago, our aim was to become a kind of community megaphone, sharing events, ideas and information relating to country living, locally. Free, accessible 24/7 and operating in real time, twitter is a tool that perfectly complements our magazines. The 140 character limit requires us all to think before we tweet, encouraging photography and other creative content. In the last few weeks we’ve managed (fingers crossed) to temporarily rehome a grand piano, thrill someone who won one of our competitions and generate a lot of good will. With over 2,500 of us interacting daily it’s a great way to share news, exchange ideas and connect with interesting people. An increasing number of local businesses and non-profit organisations have been signing up each week. By

following back and retweeting anything of relevance, we support them and provide a hub for local life, all in one place. If you are involved with a local organisation you will often find us networking on a Monday night from 8-9. Please join us by following @WorcesterHour, and adding #WorcestershireHour to your tweets. Social may be unfamiliar to you but it’s not difficult to use. If you like traditional pastimes like gardening, cookery, photography or art you’ll find it a rich and satisfying resource.
