EDITOR’S LETTER When I was a little girl I loved those books where you join the dots.

I’m no artist but I wanted to express myself and was impatient for a good result. Using numbered templates met my needs; they provided the outline that I could go on to colour and shade. I could spend calming time with pen in hand and get satisfaction from what I produced.

Building the Life in the Village community feels a bit like working on those dot-to-dots. With the help of others, we can achieve so much more than we can alone. My aim is simple - to connect and support householders, businesses and non-profit organisations across Bredon Hill and beyond. The way we do that, in print, online and on social media, is constantly evolving. As time passes and more and more people become involved, the clearer the connections between us become and the greater the potential for us all to benefit from a local network that is both practical and creative.

WILDLIFE Spring came early this year.

Our mild and seemingly short winter with its unseasonably warm February gave our wildflowers the boost they needed. Before March had begun we saw celandines and even wood anemones bursting into colour.

Of all the seasons, this is when nature is at its most spellbinding.

Our countryside is changing on a weekly, if not daily, basis; trees leaf up, hedgerows become green and orchards bud and bloom. After the austerity of winter the warmth and sunlight brings a rush of growth; you could almost get sensory overload with the blossoming of it all.

As the world greens and grows around us, remember there is also

beauty to be found in the hidden spaces of Worcestershire. Deep within our woods, beneath the unfurling branches of trees, there is an entire world waiting to be explored on the woodland floor.

Fairy bells Worcestershire is home to many bluebells – our free-draining soils and long history of managing woodlands means that they grow in profusion right across the county.

These dainty violet plants with their gently nodding bell-shaped heads have long been associated with folklore and fairies. Stories of old tell us that bluebell woods are places of enchantment, used by fairies to lure and trap humans into their world. It’s said that the flower bells ring at midnight to summon the fairies to their gatherings but woe

betide any human who hears the ringing because they will be doomed.

Trampling the flowers underfoot also apparently brings untold bad luck.

Standing before a carpet of bluebells and breathing in their gentle scent, I could easily be persuaded that fairies are flitting about in the undergrowth. If that’s the case, they must be widespread because bluebells are found throughout the UK. Although they grow right across northwest Europe, about half the world’s population of Hyacinthoides scripta are contained within our shores.

In Worcestershire we find bluebells mainly in our woodlands; a superb example being Tiddesley Wood nature reserve, near Pershore.

other low-growing plants. They can sometimes also be spotted in country lanes. On my way to work, I drive past several grass verges that have pockets of bluebells in them.

A sight like this is usually a sign of lost woodland, the wildflowers and roadside hedges being all that remains of an ancient site.

Our native bluebells are delicate plants. Although usually violet, their colour can vary from white or cream through to deep blues and pinks. All the flowers dangle from one side of the stem which bends slightly under their weight, rather than standing upright.

During the late seventeenth century gardeners began to import Spanish bluebells to make more of a statement in gardens. This variety grows taller, is more upright and has looser, blousy blooms. In the early part of the 20th century, these brasher Mediterranean cousins escaped gardens and began to colonise our countryside. It has lifeinthevillage.co.uk | Late Spring 2019

created a real problem because they hybridise readily with our historic species. It’s thought that one in six woodlands now contain a mix of Spanish and hybrid bluebells, increasing the risk that our own native species will eventually be lost.

Purple majesties Several species of orchid can be found in local woodlands and on Bredon Hill. One of the most obvious, which grows alongside bluebells in ancient sites, is the early purple orchid which smells of honey

when it first blooms.

Look closely and you’ll see as many as 50 flowers densely packed onto a tall stiff stem; the upper petals of each flower form a hood whilst the lower ones are lobed.

The bloom rises from a base of blade-like leaves which are spotted with dark patches and these gave rise to a colloquial Warwickshire name, Jessamine, a variation of Gethsemane. This name is linked to the belief that the plant was growing beneath the Cross at the time of Christ’s death and that the spots came from drops of his blood.

The historic names of plants and the folklore associated with them demonstrate the close relationship that we have always had with the countryside around us. The label orchid comes from the Latin Orchis meaning testicle, a reference to the two root tubers that sit beneath the ground. One is new and expanding, filling up with nutrients to support next year’s growth while the other 11

is withering away as it supplies the flower that blooms above the soil.

This association of orchids with fertility has resulted in a range of uses. In Greece, the burgeoning orchid tuber was imbibed to excite desire and the slack one to restrain it. Aphrodisiacs were concocted by grinding the tuber to a powder to make a liquid called salep or saloop which was sold in coffee houses.

Also a refreshing drink, it is still produced in parts of the world today and increasing consumption of it is driving some species to the edge of extinction. Fortunately, in the UK, orchids are protected and the collection of them is illegal.

Stink bombs You can often detect the distinct scent of wild garlic before you spot

its beautiful starry white flowers and long shiny leaves. A member of the onion family, it gives off a pungent aroma, especially when growing in large drifts. Like bluebells, wild garlic can carpet an entire woodland floor, thriving on damp but welldrained soils in shady spots of woods or at the bases of hedges.

meaning bear) refers to the fact that it’s a favoured food of brown bears who love to dig it up. The plant is also known as ramsons and it’s likely that this is a derivation of hramusô, the proto-Germanic word for onions.

As you might expect, wildflowers help to support other wildlife in a woodland. Whilst bluebells are an important early source of nectar for bees, wild garlic is vital to the ramsons hoverfly, a creature that, in this area at least, is totally dependent upon it. This tiny dark-silvery hoverfly which has a shiny chest can often be found perched on wild garlic leaves and spends its entire life cycle on the plant. The larvae tunnel into the bulbs and spend the winter in them and the adults spend their time hanging around the leaves in order to find a mate and pass on their genes.

Look out for them resting amongst larger patches of wild garlic.

our bluebells and other native wildflowers. About 90% of a wood’s diversity lies along the edges of its paths and glades; the availability of sunlight in these more open and dappled patches allows the growth of a whole range of plants that would be suffocated by the cover of a closed canopy. These plants provide the nectar and pollen for the rest of the food chain from insects through to birds and mammals.

Visitors to our woodland nature reserves during winter often express surprise that we’ve chopped down trees but we’ve normally coppiced rather than removed them. Coppicing involves cutting

down trees almost to the ground, which allows them to grow back again. When performed cyclically it ensures woodland plants can get regular access to sunlight; a coppice cycle of eight to ten years will constantly reinvigorate the growth of bluebells and other wild flowers.

Bluebells spread both by setting seed and from sending offshoots out from the bulbs, with leaves appearing as early as January. Their flowering, as with other plants, is weather-dependent. This year, leaves were in profusion in woodlands across south Worcestershire by early March so we’re hopeful of a good show this spring.

Fingers crossed it will be timed perfectly for our 33rd Annual Tiddesley Wood Open Day on Sunday 5th May 10am-5pm.

Sporting a stripe Personal style advice from Kate Evans, Image Consultant and Coach I am a HUGE fan of a stripe…

I dress my children, my home and myself in a stripe with frightening regularity. My favourite combination is with leopard print or camel, or both.

This season stripes are back in all their nautical glory as a firm fashion staple. They come in endless variations, from bold to thin, monochrome to candy stripes and you’ll find them on everything from shirts to knee length pleats.

If you want to embrace the stripe it’s worth considering how they work with your body shape so you can find the most flattering way to wear them before you invest.

Busty and curvy Horizontal lines contribute to a feeling of width as the eye is drawn across the fabric, so not ideal. If you want to wear a striped top try putting a cardigan or jacket over it so you only see a pop of the stripe rather than the whole expanse, then team with plain bottoms.

Boyish Those who are straight in the body can go horizontal or vertical with stripes. Tight, horizontal lines or narrow vertical stripes across the hips and bust will create shape and give 26

the illusion of movement, as well as curves. Alternating black and white blocks will exaggerate where areas start and finish giving the impression of a little more curve too.

The size of your stripe should balance with your scale Triangular Your best option is to draw attention to your smaller top half. Stripes help to broaden narrow shoulders to balance out your hips. If you are also smaller in the bust, wear horizontal

stripes above the waist to detract the eye away from your wider lower half. Choosing plain skirts and trousers will also deflect attention.

Petite The size of your stripe should balance with your scale, so women with a shoe size of 4 (37) or under will be better wearing fine stripes.

The colours of your stripes will also affect your overall look so compare how bright, high contrast shades work versus subtle tonal ones. Perfect summer days at Coughton Court Enjoy a relaxing day out at one of Warwickshire’s most beautiful family homes, suggests Abi Cole

During the summer months the grounds at Coughton are fresh with the colour and scent of new life. From late April the borders fill out, the apple blossom opens in the orchard and a carpet of bluebells shimmers on the woodland floor.

Nestled between the ancient St. Peter’s Church and Westminster Pool, the walled garden is the jewel in the crown of the Throckmorton family gardens. At its heart lies the award-winning rose labyrinth which, from late June, bursts with more than 200 different varieties of rose, including a large selection of ramblers and climbers.

Further afield, there’s loads to explore. Take a stroll down to the River Arrow and you’ll find broods of ducklings and goslings; take your

time and pause on the bridge and you can play a couple of rounds of Pooh Sticks.

Follow the water over to Timms Grove and you will enter Coughton’s ancient woodland. Once part of the Forest of Arden, the wood is one of the most iconic and beautiful sights here. Dig out your 50 Things booklet and the children can start ticking off some of the activities, such as hunting for bugs or making a trail with sticks. Don’t forget to look for the grandfather clock hidden deep in the woods; it’s the perfect spot for a game of hide and seek.

Poetry in the garden The 42nd Ashton under Hill Open Gardens takes place on the 8th and 9th June and this year’s event has a theme that is close to all our hearts, suggests Andrew Cooke Can you imagine a world where the words that represent fundamental parts of the countryside and natural world are expunged from the English language, not taught in schools or learned by children?

Ashton under Hill Open Gardens takes its 2019 theme from The Lost Words, a book of enchanting

poems beautifully crafted by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris. The book was created in reaction to a decision by The Oxford Junior Dictionary to exclude many little used words that related to wildlife and the natural world such as bluebell, wren, otter, dandelion and bramble. The Lost Words bring these words back into children’s language.

The link to Ashton Open Gardens is clear. Every year over 1000 visitors come to this stunning Cotswold village and enjoy around 25 private gardens; they may spot dandelions and bluebells, the odd bramble and maybe a wren, if not the village otters.

This year our exhibition in St Barbara’s Church will feature The Lost Words with contributions from local schools and the book’s publishers. A range of stalls will

offer plants and local crafts and there will be a gardener’s raffle.

The photographic competition, featuring classes for adults and young people, will also follow the theme.

Adult entry is only £6 for the two days with under 16s free and discounts for larger parties. Homemade sandwiches, cream teas and ice creams will be available and The Star will be open. Free car and coach parking is available in the centre of the village and we run a complimentary minibus service.

Whitsun tradition Enjoy a family afternoon out this Bank Holiday weekend suggests Carol Rabbette Little Comberton Street Market, now in its 35th year, is held annually on the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend and this year it takes place on Saturday 25th May between 2pm and 5 pm. It’s always a fun family afternoon; last year we welcomed over 800 visitors.

The event promises a unique yet traditional fête with a host of colourful stalls set amongst thatched cottages, orchards and hay bales, with background tunes of live music, bell ringing and morris dancing.

The market includes plenty of stalls selling books, plants, vintage and collectibles, plus local arts and crafts.

There’s local produce including asparagus and strawberries, while local beer and cider are on offer in the drinks tent. Other refreshments include pork baps, homemade cakes and cream teas.

There’s plenty to do for children too, including a dedicated games area. Our church exhibition this year is entitled ‘Floral Art’ and,

Owning a piece of history It is estimated there are over 500,000 listed buildings in the UK. These buildings are subject to strict regulations to ensure they are preserved. At Thomson & Bancks we regularly deal with the sale and purchase of listed buildings so we asked Conveyancing Solicitor, Chantal Butters, to answer some questions So why are buildings listed?

Buildings are listed by the Secretary of State if they are considered to be of special interest, to ensure they are protected for generations to come.

What is included in a listed building?

These sorts of buildings often include historical and/or architectural characteristics and therefore the whole of the building is included, both internally and externally as well as structures within the curtilage of the building.

What if I want to alter a listed building?

If you own a property which is listed and you wish to alter it in a way which would affect its character, you must first obtain Listed Building Consent from the Council.

What would happen if I did not get Listed Building Consent?

Unauthorised works carried out to a listed building is a criminal offence with a maximum sentence of 2 years imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

When you buy a listed building, you inherit any unauthorised work undertaken by previous owners. As there is no time limit on enforcement action you may be required to reverse the alteration.

A Listed Building Enforcement Notice may be served on the owner of the building or anyone that has an interest in the building requiring restoration or alleviating the effects of the unlawful works. Failure to comply with a Notice is an offence with potentially an unlimited fine.

It may be possible to obtain retrospective consent for works however it is always best practice to apply for Listed Building Consent before work commences, rather than take the risk of applying for retrospective consent which may not be granted at all!

Bredon Manor sits in twelve acres of gardens and water meadows, overlooking the river Avon, between St Giles Church and Bredon Barn.

The Barn, which was originally linked to the Manor, has been in the care of the National Trust since 1951.

The Manor has a fascinating history. The earliest records of a dwelling on the site date back to circa 715 when permission was granted to form a monastery. The frame of the Manor is Tudor but parts of the north wing contain medieval remains so we believe that the current building dates back to the 1300’s.

According to the National Trust, Bredon Barn was built around 1350 at the time of Black Death when half the population of Bredon were killed by the plague. It was commissioned by a bishop and for this reason it was originally thought to be a Tithe barn;

a barn where one tenth of the annual crops grown or earned were taken as taxes for the church and clergy.

Subsequent research has shown it was actually a manorial barn as the bishop, and subsequent bishops, were also lords of Bredon from 900AD to the mid 1500s. Back then, the barn was used to store crops such as wheat, oats, barley, hay, wool and dried peas for the estate. Later, it was leased to a succession of farmers. Today it is open to visitors; home to many white doves and various species of bat.

The ground floor was developed during the 1900’s and during that century the Manor had a series of owners. For a time during the 1970’s it operated as a licensed guest house. We took it on in 1996 and undertook an extensive programme of restoration and redecoration.

This summer’s event will be set around the swimming pool which overlooks the duck pond purported to have held the monk’s carp. We have access to two large party rooms in case of bad weather.

On arrival, you will receive a complimentary first drink; after that you can purchase from a Pimms, wine, beer or specialist gin bar.

Pershore war horse memorial Join Pershore resident Sue Cosnett to create a memorial sculpture that depicts our heroes and animals lost during the war

Proud local residents are joining forces to support Combat Stress with a poignant memorial sculpture designed out of recycled horseshoes that will be displayed in the grounds of Pershore Abbey.

The idea was forged by Sue Cosnett, of Lancelott Court, Pershore and is fully backed by Wychavon District Council. The horse will be designed and created by local blackmith Steve Ellis Cooper.

Sue came up with the idea last year, when the nation was marking the centenary of the First World War. She said “As someone who’s lived in Pershore all my life, I wanted to do something positive to mark the occasion within my local community. The design itself will reflect not only our fallen heroes but also the huge number of animals that also died alongside them.”

The logo shows a purple poppy which depicts the loss of thousands of animals during the war and will be incorporated into the design.

Hoping to gain as much local support as possible, the 50

group’s target is to raise £12,000 by the end of October to cover the cost of the build. This sculpture will be a lasting legacy and reminder for many generations to come and any surplus funds will be donated to Combat Stress, an organisation that cares for the mental health of veterans.

Sue is seeking the support of the local community including schools, businesses and visitors to the town to make donations, organise fundraising events and pull together to make the project happen.

Enjoy the first in a new series of recipes from Cotswolds based Meg Rivers Artisan Bakery Makes about 20 INGREDIENTS

125g / 1 stick unsalted butter 115g / ½ cup plus 1 tablespoon (caster) sugar 1 generous tablespoon golden syrup/light corn syrup 1 tablespoon milk 175g / 1 1/3 cups plus 1 tablespoon plain/ all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 baking sheets (ungreased)

METHOD

• Preheat the oven to 180C (350F) gas 4.

• Put the butter, sugar, syrup and milk in a saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly, until the butter is melted and the mixture is nearly boiling. This can also be done in a microwave: put the ingredients in a bowl and heat in short bursts, stirring between each, until the mixture is ready.

Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool to lukewarm.

• Sift the flour and baking powder together into a large bowl. Pour the butter mixture into the bowl and stir well to combine. Take generous teaspoonfuls of the mix and, with another spoon, drop onto the baking sheets, leaving about 5cm/2 inches between each biscuit. Lightly press with a fork to flatten (dip the fork in water to stop it sticking to the dough) and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden.

• Remove the biscuits from the oven and allow to stand for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

• The biscuits are best eaten on the day but will keep for 2-3 days in an airtight container.

Help create the new heart of St Richard’s Help the team at St Richard’s Hospice realise their vision to create a living well centre at the heart of their Worcester base suggests Helen Griffee

A living well centre will be the focus of stage two of St Richard’s Build 2020 campaign and will include new rooms for care and social support, ensuring the hospice can help many more people in the future.

The hospice team is delighted that, thanks to generous donations so far, the first stage of the Build 2020 project is expected to be completed imminently. Parts of the hospice have already been redeveloped or newly built and opened to patients and families.

It’s with a huge thanks to everyone who has donated so far that we are now able to welcome patients and their loved ones into lovely, bright and modern rooms to attend the hospice for the day, out-patient clinics and our Living Well activities. We’ve also re-opened our large reception which has been redesigned to create a more welcoming and friendly space.

We have introduced new information and social groups for current patients and carers and those who are not already under the care of the hospice and living with a serious progressive illness. These include sessions such as Understanding Pain and its Management; Love Books, Making life easier with Technology and Knit

The Build 2020 project will cost £5.3m, and thanks to wonderfully generous support we now have £776,000 left to raise to fulfil our goal of caring for up to an extra 1,000 individuals a year when they need us most. We know that’s still a huge amount, but are very hopeful that everyone will get behind this final push to reach the target.

St Richard’s launched the Build 2020 appeal last year as areas of the hospice were bursting at the seams and we were struggling to respond to the ever-increasing number of patients.

Demand for hospice care is set to rise sharply with an aging population and people living longer with multiple illnesses including neurological and heart, renal and respiratory conditions as well as cancer.

All the new and expanded services will run alongside St Richard’s current wide range of patient and family care including support in people’s own homes and 17 in-patient beds.

St Richard’s Hospice cares for adults with a serious progressive illness, improving their quality of life from diagnosis, during treatment and to their last days. It also supports their loved ones. Each year the hospice team supports more than

3,300 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

St Richard’s is an independent charity and relies on donations for three quarters of its annual £8.8m income with the remainder from the NHS.

The living well centre The new centre - which will officially be called the St Richard’s Hospice Bradbury Centre thanks to the generous support of the Bradbury Foundation - will allow the charity to more than double the number of day patients.

The living well rooms will all open onto The Green, a light new space where patients, carers, staff and visitors can gather together to eat and drink, meet friends, to sit after a therapeutic session - or just to connect with others who have come to the hospice for support.

The living well centre will include: Therapy room: a flexible space where therapies like acupuncture, aromatherapy and massage will be offered.

Counselling room: a quiet calm, private space where staff, patients and families can meet to discuss their care; their practical support needs or have emotional support in difficult times.

Exercise studio: here patients can exercise and gain strength, helping them to become physically fitter and improving endurance and balance.

Art studio: a brand-new resource where patients and loved ones will come to use art and creativity to express their feelings.

Training kitchen: our Occupational Therapists can help patients re-learn cooking skills, improving independence and their day to day life at home.

Horticultural room: a place where patients can enjoy the simple benefits of gardening, planting and flowerarranging, skills often lost to someone who is ill.

Music and cinema room: here we’ll provide music therapy for patients, a space for choirs and other performances as well as the space to show new and favourite films.

Hairdressing salon - where trained hairdressing volunteers can enhance a patient’s well being.

• Mash by hand or for finer mash use a mouli or potato ricer • While the potatoes are cooking, cut the raw fish into equal sized pieces and place into a deep buttered tray.

Add white wine to cover the base of the tray. Season and cook for 12 – 14 minutes at 180°.

• When the fish is cooked, strain the liquid and discard it.

• Add the cooked fish to a large bowl, then add the potato, tbsp of chilli mix and the lemon juice, salted and melted butter.

• Mix together and taste for seasoning, adding more lemon or chilli if required, then taste again.

• Set the fish cake mixture into a deep tray, allow to cool for a few hours in the fridge.

• Cut out using a cutter.

• Dip into flour, beaten egg and breadcrumbs twice.

• If freezing, place onto silicone paper.

• To cook, deep fry for 2 minutes then transfer to the oven for 10 minutes at 180° • Serve with sweet chilli sauce and a salad garnish.

Belle House Rhubarb tart Try this delicate spring dessert from Steve Waites of Belle House

INGREDIENTS – RHUBARB AND STOCK SYRUP

700g rhubarb, washed and trimmed 330ml water vanilla pod 50g caster sugar ½ a lemon, juiced

INGREDIENTS – SWEET PASTRY TART CASE

500g flour 150g soft butter 100g caster sugar 100g icing sugar 2 eggs 50 ml cold water INGREDIENTS – CRÈME PATISSERIE

426ml/ ¾ pint whole milk 4 egg yolks 4 oz/113g caster sugar 2oz/56g corn flour ½ vanilla pod 100ml double cream

METHOD – RHUBARB

• Cut the rhubarb into batons.

• Put the vanilla pod, sugar, lemon juice and water (stock syrup) in a pan over a low heat to dissolve the sugar.

• Add the rhubarb and simmer for 5 minutes.

• Remove from the heat and leave to cool in the syrup, preferably overnight, or for at least an hour; this ensures the fruit holds its shape.

METHOD – PASTRY

• Put flour, butter and sugars into a mixing bowl on a KitchenAid or similar and mix until bread crumb texture.

• Whisk water and eggs together, then pour over the flour mixture and mix to create a dough.

• Knead briefly on a floured surface, form into a log then wrap in cling film and leave to rest for 30 minutes in the fridge.

METHOD – CRÈME PATISSERIE

• Mix the sugar, egg yolks and cornflour together in a bowl until thoroughly combined.

• Boil the milk and vanilla pod.

• Pour the milk mixture over the egg mixture and whisk together.

• Return the combined mixture to the saucepan and stir continually until thick over a medium heat, taking care to not let it burn on the bottom of the pan.

• Remove from the heat, transfer to a bowl and cover with cling film to prevent a skin from forming. Allow to cool and place in the fridge until needed.

• Before using, the crème patisserie can be whisked for a smooth finish.

• Remove the pastry from the fridge; leave it out at room temperature for 5–10 minutes to soften. Roll out to 1mm thick (or as thin as you can) on a lightly floured surface. Use the pastry to line a 12 x 35cm fluted rectangular tart tin, or equivalent, making sure you press the pastry into the fluted edges (you can use the blunt end of a knife to help you do this). Leave any excess pastry overhanging. Chill for 30 minutes.

• Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Remove the pastry case from the fridge, line with baking parchment and baking beans. Blind-bake for 20 minutes, then remove the parchment and beans, and continue baking for 5 minutes more until pale golden and biscuity. Use a sharp serrated knife to trim off the overhanging pastry to give you a clean edge. Cool in the tin.

• Remove the rhubarb pieces from their syrup and set aside. Return the syrup to the hob and boil until thick and sticky. Leave to cool slightly.

• To finish the crème patisserie, whisk the cream until it holds soft peaks and fold this into the chilled mixture.

This is easier if you start by beating in a little cream and then folding in the remaining.

• Remove the pastry case from the tin and put on a plate. Fill with the crème patisserie and smooth over the surface. Carefully line up the rhubarb down the length of the tart case, trying to fit them in quite snugly, or spoon over for a more relaxed finish. Use a pastry brush to glaze the tart with the rhubarb syrup.

• Chill for 30 mins before serving. Best eaten on the day of making but will keep for 3 days in the fridge.
