Woodland WONDERS In the last of our series on butterflies, Wendy
Carter of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust introduces a range of woodland species. 16
T
he cool, dappled shade of the mature woodland offers a welcome relief from the sun beating down... at least that’s the experience I’m wishing for us all later this season! I’ve got my rose-coloured glasses on as usual, hoping for the rare spectacle of a glorious summer because good weather brings out some of our most beautiful wildlife – and butterfly spotting on a warm day is a great
thing to do. I can’t promise to deliver the sunshine but why not pay a visit to some of your local woodlands this summer and see what you might find? Gliders It’s a delight to catch sight of a the black and white flash of a White Admiral as it glides along a woodland ride – effortlessly flying from tree to woodland floor and back up again. See one up close and you’ll notice subtle

Romantic Souls Wander through somewhere like Tiddesley Wood nature reserve near Pershore, in July and August, and you may be lucky enough to have a Silver-Washed Fritillary soar past you. They’re fast-flying and one of our largest
woodland butterflies but it’s their elaborate courtship that makes them one of my favourites. The male follows the scent of the female then dances around her – swooping under and over her as she flies. If she’s happy with his display, she’ll land and he’ll shower her with scent scales before mating takes place. She will then head off to find a patch of dog violets, the food plant of the caterpillars, before laying her eggs on a nearby tree, one by one, in a variety of locations. Tree-top Dwellers Grafton Wood in south Worcestershire is the centre of the only Midlands’ colony of Brown Hairstreaks and these rarities are also one of the most elusive. They spend much of

patterns in the dark wings whilst their undersides feature sky blue mosaics alongside a reddybrown and white pattern. The adults are often seen feeding on bramble in sunny glades whereas the caterpillars will be found devouring honeysuckle leaves in late summer before they shelter in a dried, rolled up leaf throughout the winter. The following spring they’ll feed on fresh growth before pupating and completing the lifecycle.

their time high up in the treetops but it’s possible to spot the odd one coming down to feed on fleabane and thistles. From mid to late August onwards there’s also potential to find a female scudding along hedgerows close to woodlands as she searches for young blackthorn on which to lay her eggs. The reliance on blackthorn poses problems for Brown Hairstreaks – the preferred twigs are often smashed when hedgerows are trimmed during winter. For this reason volunteers have been encouraging some local landowners to alter their hedgerow management – with success; Worcestershire’s brown hairstreak population is now increasing in both range and numbers.

Gladiators You wouldn’t think it to look at them but Speckled Woods are the gladiators of the butterfly realm. The males defend their territories, which often consist of only a few square metres, with some vigour – spiralling up and up in a ray of sunshine, constantly colliding and crashing with the incoming male. Once the resident male has triumphed (as they often do), he will return to perch on exactly the same leaf, in the same patch of sunlight, ready and waiting to respond to the challenge from the next contender. Speckled Woods feed on honeydew in the tree canopy but you may also spy them feeding on flowers in autumn when aphid activity is low. Unusually for butterflies, they can overwinter
as both larva and pupa, which results in a mixed emergence throughout the year. It means Speckled Woods can be seen from late March into October, with their final peak in late August/early September. Wonders of the natural world The butterflies we’ve featured in this series are all incredible. Often, humans get in their way – ploughing up meadows or failing to coppice woodlands – so they’re not all found in the numbers they once were. You may not have control of a meadow or a woodland but there’s always something you can do to help, from joining the Trust to gardening with wildlife in mind. RETIREMENT Planning Making time to review your pension annually is the first step to a secure retirement. WORDS: Jo Potts
I
f
there’s one tip that every working person should know about their finances it’s this: be sure to review your pension once a year. Many people hear the word ‘pension’ and quickly glaze over. The problem is that it’s the most misunderstood area of financial planning. Even those who are financially astute often feel that pensions are veiled in mystery. Regular review of your pension is important for three reasons. Firstly, the legislation is constantly changing so you need to keep abreast of issues that are relevant to you and take appropriate action. Secondly, market and economic conditions can significantly affect the performance of your investments so you should be aware of where your monies are invested and why. Finally, your personal circumstances will change from time to time and this can have
implications regarding the level of contributions you wish to make. Another factor to consider is that the Lifetime Allowance set by HMRC has gradually been reducing. This allowance is a limit on the amount of pension benefit that can be drawn from pension schemes without triggering a further tax charge. It’s something that can affect those like NHS employees and teachers who still have a final salary pension plan. Registering for the Lifetime Allowance means that you could avoid these costly tax charges when you draw down your pension. Another live topic is how to respond to the new pension freedom rules. Since April 2015, everyone over 55 has had the freedom to take a cash lump sum or a flexible income via drawdown, although this comes with tax implications which need to be considered. Savers still have the option to buy an annuity if they want to. But after a year of unprecedented change, there is evidence from Treasury figures that the initial ‘dash for
cash’ is starting to slow. Experts agree that most savers are generally acting responsibly with their pension pots, but greater autonomy to take benefits from a Defined Contribution pension means very little unless individuals can be persuaded to save more for their retirement. Pensions are a complex topic but yours need not be a mystery. An annual review is the simplest way to reflect and gain clarity about which of these issues apply to you. The levels and bases of taxation and relief from taxation can change at any time and are generally dependant on individual circumstances. D
umbleton Cricket Club plays host to one of the finest and friendliest village fetes in the Cotswolds. Despite last year’s wet Bank Holiday, the fete proved to be a great place to meet up with friends and this year promises to be better than ever. Set in picturesque parkland, surrounded by water and magnificent trees, Dumbleton is one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the country. Our traditional fete always attracts a huge crowd, offering a fantastic afternoon for all the family. Be sure to arrive promptly for the infamous bric-a-brac stall, tombola, bottle, and cake stalls. For the children we have games and races, face painting, Punch and Judy, bouncy castles, skittles, a chance to get up close to birds of prey and
much more. Adults and young people can enjoy a good variety of craft stalls or try their hand at archery, zorbing or a 25ft climbing wall. Plus there’s a falconry display, Morris Dancers, a brass quartet and a group of Harley Davidsons. All this can be washed down with a cream tea, a hog roast bap and drinks from the bar. The best part is that entry and parking is free and all proceeds go to the Cricket Club for the benefit of the community and the purchase of equipment for the Juniors. We hope to see you all here on Bank Holiday Monday. If you would like to book a stall or have any queries, please email Vicky Hardwick on tim.vickyhardwick@gmail.com. With Caroline Lawrence from The Roses in Tewkesbury Back in May, I found myself at a seminar at The Centaur surrounded by professionals flinging ping pong balls into buckets. Intrigued? I was! Let me explain. I was taking part in Gloucestershire Business Show, where companies from all across the county gather to network, showcase their skills and build relationships. The Roses was chosen as creative partner for the event, and I was attending a session on how partnering with an arts organisation can benefit businesses. The Roses is a registered charity, reliant upon the generosity of donations and community support for our vibrant programme of events and renowned outreach and education work. With so few alternative cultural provisions
locally, the theatre plays an integral role in offering people the chance to engage with the arts. The completion of Phase 1 of our redevelopment has shown us what can be achieved and fuelled our desire to continue our regeneration as a true community destination. And this is one reason why we do so much work with businesses. Being small and local, with sophisticated database software, we know our audiences inside out. We get to know people as people, not just statistics, so we know how to communicate effectively, when and with whom. Our ability to analyse our audience helps us plan our programming, ensuring we offer the events you want. This ability to segment an audience is also what you need for effective marketing. We would never sell our data, nor do we directly market on behalf of
businesses. But we do partner up with them, creating sponsorship packages that are relevant and welcome. We’re incredibly grateful to our corporate sponsors for their support in Phase 1 and they will be just as crucial to Phase 2, which we launch publicly very soon, helping us ensure we can nurture local artistic talent and increase our sustainability. To see what’s on at The Roses, visit www.rosestheatre.org or call in and pick up a brochure.

The White
PAPER
With Dr Tony Evans, Headteacher at Prince Henry’s High School Evesham.
T
here has been huge media interest in the government’s White Paper, “Educational Excellence Everywhere” since its publication in March, especially in relation to the U-Turn which subsequently took place over its proposal that all schools, irrespective of their Ofsted grading, should become academies by 2022. However, the White Paper contains far more than the academisation proposals within its 123 pages, and I will now attempt to summarise these. The Department of Education (DfE) has set out a number of delivery priorities for schools and educational settings including:-
Recruiting and retaining teachers by strengthening university and school-led training and accreditation. Strengthening training to provide succession planning for the next generation of school leaders. Developing Academies and Multi Academy Trusts. Reforming School Inspection and implementing new accountability measures through the School League Tables in the form of the Attainment and Progress of pupils. Embedding reforms to the curriculum and assessment. This year, children have taken new SATs tests following changes to the curriculum for 7-11 year olds, and students in the 14-19 age range have started new courses at GCSE and A-Level. Plans for 500 new Free Schools; each city in the UK having access to a University Technical College and plenty of post-16 places. Funding of schools will be reformed through a National
www.princehenrys.worcs.sch.uk 32
Funding Formula and schools will be expected to drive greater efficiencies. Other reforms will include developing the apprenticeship model for 16-19 year olds; extending free child care to 30 hours for 3-4 year olds; strengthening children’s social care; supporting vulnerable children; protecting children from radicalisation and finally, developing careers support. Prince Henry’s, like many other schools, has already been working towards the priorities set by the government for some time. All of the points are important but the big issue for the children in Worcestershire is the introduction of the National Funding Formula. For far too long, children in our county have deserved more equitable funding compared to their peers in other parts of the country. However, it is likely to be after 2020 when the real effect is seen.

Lasting Beauty With 25 years’ experience accrued in the beauty industry, Kirsti Attwood, Director at Beauty Beyond, still loves nothing more than making a client feel better. We asked her to share the secrets of sustaining such a rich and rewarding career.

I’ve been a fully qualified beauty therapist for 25 years but, unusually, I still work full -time with clients. Not many salon owners manage that but I do it simply because it’s brings me joy. I love helping clients, I love meeting a different person every hour and I love being part of a happy team who know they make a real difference. What I enjoy most is seeing a client’s skin improve. Facials are an area of specialist expertise here and we offer a huge range from Caci to Clarins and Guinot. I’m proud to say that we’ve been a Decleor Silver
Salon for ten years running. It’s so satisfying to help an individual who has come with a skin issue that is affecting their life. We always take an holistic approach, looking at every aspect of their wellbeing, and I get a real buzz from seeing their health improve and their confidence grow. There’s nothing better than education to keep you moving forward. As a team, we’re regularly in the capital, visiting the big trade beauty shows and training to keep current. Just last month I went to London to get up to speed in the lastest Caci Eye Revive treatment. I worked in every area of the beauty industry before opening my own salon in

Winchcombe ten years ago. I travelled on cruise ships, was employed in numerous top hotels and treated lots of celebrities before formulating my own brand. For a decade, I was also an educator, teaching NVQ. Today, if I take on a newly qualified therapist, I spend a lot of time training them, one to one, so I can be sure that every client will receive the same high level of service. It’s easy to slip into bad habits so my therapists routinely give me treatments too.
The team know that I’m obsessive about everything being done 110% so the salon is spotless and we all work to daily checklists. It’s an ethos that has helped to build a brilliant team, united by this desire to always exceed expectations. We’re big on gratitude, with each other and our clients, and work hard to show our appreciation to everyone who supports us. We welcome all new clients with £10 off any treatment. ow in it's 38th year, Overbury Street Market is run to raise funds for various community organisations in Overbury and Conderton, mainly St Faith’s Church, the Village Hall, Friends of Overbury School, and the Cricket Club. Plan to have a late breakfast on Saturday 9th July because the irresistible smell of bacon butties attracts a large crowd every year. Enjoy live musical entertainment with a chance of winning a top quality raffle prize. Local Potter Toff Milway will help you try to throw a pot on his

With all the benefits of a conservatory and the advantage that you can situate it anywhere, a stand alone glass garden building from L&L with Nordic Garden Buildings, makes an ideal space to dine and relax with friends suggests Director, John Lannen. 42

ating outdoors is one of the things I love most about summer. Our new range of stand alone garden buildings make it possible to enjoy this simple pleasure from early spring right through until the autumn. Install a log burner, under floor heating or an electric fan heater and you can extend the season even further. Some clients tell us they even dine in
them on Christmas Day. If you lack the right spot for a conservatory, a stand alone garden building gives you the chance to maximise our precious warmth and light. Sheltered from the breeze and the chill of the night, it means you will be able to relax in your garden more often, socialise with friends later into the evening and enjoy the outdoors on days when it would otherwise be too cold.
Company Promotion
Nordic Garden Buildings are supplied to us by a Welsh company that has been manufacturing products from uPVC for 40 years. Their range was launched in Europe where they have been tested in extreme weather conditions and proven to be robust. These versatile structures are available in a range of shapes and sizes, including the popular octagonal design which sits well in the corner of a garden or can be located to offer panoramic views. With a choice of styles available for the glass,

Being portable means that you don’t need planning permission and best of all, if you decide to move home you can even take it with you. For 35 years, L&L Installations have developed an unrivalled reputation as one of Gloucestershire’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of glazed upvc, aluminium and timber. Autumn
We caught up with Ken Nottage, Chief Executive Officer at the Malvern Autumn Show which takes place at The Three Counties Showground, Malvern on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September.
What can we look forward to at this year’s Show? Malvern Autumn invites visitors to welcome in the new season. It’s a glorious showcase of harvest produce, hosted in association with Westons Cider, truly celebrating the wealth of the area. Visitors can enjoy a feast of family entertainment, artisan produce, food and gardening royalty against the stunning setting of the Malvern Hills. What are the highlights this year? Each year, the show proves a one-stop destination for gardeners in search of advice and plants for restocking their gardens for winter. The UK
National Giant Vegetable Championship promises to return bigger and better than ever before with a broad variety of oversized vegetables. In 2015, this area of the show broke three vegetable world records and this year is set to be no exception. A giant leek weighed in at over 10.6 kilos and a cucumber weighed in at 12.9 kilos, we also had the world’s longest beetroot. Nostalgia and retro fans can discover hidden gems in the Vintage Village with an array of eclectic finds including fashion, home wares and classic cars. Who is the Show suitable for? We look forward to welcoming families, foodies and garden lovers alike to the ultimate harvest festival. With such a variety on offer, it’s a day out for all the family from toddlers to teenagers and big kids too.

lease join us on the riverside on Saturday 3rd September for an afternoon of sporting action, adrenalin and fun. The event, sponsored by Johnston Scotia, has become an annual highlight in aid of a great cause as all funds raised help maintain the beautiful and historic St. Giles Church. Watch the racing, enter the raffle and try your luck at the bottle stall. There will be teas, a cider tent and a barbeque plus music from the hugely popular ReVIVals. Spectator entry is £2.50 for adults whilst under 12’s go free. The fee to enter a crew of eight in the races is just £25, but please don’t leave it to the last minute as entries on the day make timetabling tricky. chance to paddle. The team to beat this year is last year’s victors, ‘Mickey’s Marvels,’ so start training now. If you really want to win the trophy, it’s tougher than it looks - bell boats are built for stability rather than speed, so serious paddling is hard going. The key is having a team that will pull together, literally. Clashing paddles make lots of splashes which is fun, but it slows you down. Why not set yourself up as Captain and recruit a team to represent your pub, club, or workplace? Include your kids as every participating child gets a treat. Fancy dress and fun facts about team members are encouraged for use by the announcer on the day. To book your place just choose a crew name and email Amanda Bath for an entry form.

Pershore Plum Festival Triple winner of Worcestershire’s Best Tourism Event and Festival Award 2011 - 2013, the Pershore Plum Festival returns from 3rd July to 29th August. Think Pershore, think purple, think plums!
P
ershore will be going plum crazy this summer when the town turns purple in celebration of the jewel of a fruit that has made it so famous. Now internationally acclaimed, the Pershore Plum Festival is a unique, quirky event with activities to suit all the family. Local orchards produce tonnes of plums every year with varieties like Pershore Purple, Pershore Yellow Egg Plum and Pershore Emblem highly sought after. Pershore has been famous for its fruit growing since medieval times so this year the Festival focuses upon our plum heritage and “How the Pershore Plum won the Great War.” Throughout World War One, food shortage became a major issue with deprivation spreading across Britain. In response, the 50
plums of Pershore were transported by train around the country to be used to produce jams, chutneys and puddings. They made a huge contribution to the war effort and this was officially commemorated in 1927 when Great Western Railways named one of their trains The Pershore Plum. POLICING
South Worcestershire Domestic Abuse with Policing Commander for South Worcestershire, Superintendent Kevin Purcell.
T
he extent and nature of domestic abuse remains shocking. Domestic abuse causes serious harm, constitutes a considerable proportion of overall crime, and costs the U.K. an estimated £15.7 billion a year. Consider these facts: Domestic violence and abuse knows no boundaries. It can affect anyone regardless of their gender, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, class, age or disability. On average the police receive an emergency call relating to domestic abuse every 30 seconds. Domestic violence and abuse results in the death of two to three women every week across the England and Wales. One in four women and one in six men will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives. Reporting of domestic violence and abuse has increased by 31% in the last three years. This is due to an increased awareness of what constitutes an abusive relationship and also an increase in the confidence of victims to come forward and report. In December 2015 the government announced the enactment of Section 76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015 which creates a new offence of controlling or coercive behaviour
in intimate or familial relationships. This is a significant development towards recognising the dynamics of domestic abuse; often the precursor to physical violence. Survivors of domestic abuse will often say that bruises, cuts and broken bones quickly mend but the psychological scars take a lot longer to heal. One of the fundamental factors of coercive control is isolation of a victim. This enables a perpetrator to exert control over a victim without the risk of family, friends or professionals recognising that abuse is taking place. Rural communities can be isolating in terms of the distance residents live from their neighbours and local amenities. People living in villages often have limited access to support services and reduced opportunities for community engagement compared to those living in towns and cities This process of coercive control through isolation can therefore have a particular impact on individuals in the countryside. The police are always available to support victims of domestic abuse in pursuing criminal justice outcomes, signposting access to support agencies and safeguarding victims in response to identified risk. All of these activities are managed with the
sole aim of protecting vulnerable people from harm. However, the police alone cannot solve domestic abuse and victims routinely receive a multiagency response. West Mercia Women’s Aid provide help and support to victims who are in abusive relationships. They can offer support to help people keep themselves safe, leave a perpetrator if they wish, and successfully develop their confidence and self-esteem in order to recover from the abuse and build a new and safer life. If you want to learn more about domestic abuse and where to seek advice and support, please visit the West Mercia Police website at https://westmercia.police.uk/ article/5973/Domestic-violenceand-abuse Or contact West Mercia Women’s Aid on their confidential and free helpline number 0800 980 3331 for Worcestershire or 0800 783 1359 for Hereford, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. his year we are celebrating the 70th Fruit and Flower show, which is held in the idyllic setting of Great Comberton’s Brailles Orchard, overlooked by Bredon Hill and our ancient church. The centrepiece of this traditional show is the historic marquee with its fiercely competitive classes for wine, fruit, vegetables, art and crafts, cookery and children. You can always rely on some friendly

There’s an excellent selection of quality village and craft stalls and plenty of fun games and activities from our famous egg throwing championship to plank plodding, Ed’s Punch and Judy Show, a novelty dog show and the google treasure hunt. As this year is our 70th event we will be celebrating the 70’s era, with cookery, classic cars, music and 70’s inspired dress. Also new

Raspberry & Mascarpone Crème Brulee With a rich texture and delicious fruity flavour, this indulgent recipe is the perfect dessert for a summer lunch or dinner party. Adding raspberries to this classic French dish gives it a lift making it a popular menu choice for Belle House Weddings.
INGREDIENTS 1 vanilla pod, split 500ml of whipping cream 250g of mascarpone 9 egg yolks 150g of caster sugar icing sugar for dusting 18 raspberries plus extra to serve on top
Serves 6
58
METHOD To make the brûlée, add the split vanilla pod to a pan with the cream and mascarpone and bring to the boil. Meanwhile, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar in a bowl until pale and smooth. Once the cream has boiled, carefully pour the mixture onto the eggs, stirring continuously until incorporated and smooth. Pass the custard through a sieve into a bowl and skim any excess fat from the surface. Preheat the oven to 150°C/gas mark 2. Divide 18 of the raspberries between 6 brûlée dishes, top with the custard mixture and cook in the oven for approximately 45 minutes, until they have a slight wobble when shaken but are set in the middle. If using deep dishes, place in a bain marie (or put the dishes in a roasting pan and surround with boiling water) before cooking. Once cooked, remove from the oven, leave to cool and then chill. Once ready to serve, dust the brûlées with icing sugar and use a blow torch or grill under a preheated grill to caramelise the surface (you can repeat this process for an extra crispy top). Leave for a minute or two to set, scatter a few raspberries on top then serve immediately.

LIFE IN THE VILLAGE
Offers are one way to grow your business but we have lots of others ways to help... Our four magazines, website and twitter updates offer a slice of country life, locally. Our readers are based in the villages around Bredon Hill, the Vale of Evesham and beyond and through our online and social media activity we also reach a wider group, further afield. We have a proven history of generating growth for a wide range of local organisations since 2005. To find out more or discuss your options please contact Lisa on 01684 773135.
