Nurturing Solitary Bees

Our bees are in trouble but we can all do something to help. Wendy Carter of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust offers practical ideas to encourage solitary bees into your garden.

L

ike

many people, I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for bees; they do a great job pollinating our wild and garden flowers as well as our 10

food crops and, let’s face it, bumblebees are almost cuddly, aren't they? But a few years ago I learnt that there was more to bees than the humble bumble ... and the more I looked, the more I discovered a fascinating world. There are more than 20,000 species of bee worldwide and they can be divided into two

main types; social and solitary. Social bees are the ones most people are familiar with – delicate striped honey bees and larger, rounded bumblebees. Divided into drones (males) and workers (females), they live in communities in a hive or colony ruled by a queen (the largest bee) upon whom they are totally

Tawny mining bee male on spurge PHOTO Wendy Carter

reliant. They will swarm and sting if their hive is threatened. Look more closely, however, and you will notice several types of smaller, furry bees flitting from flower to flower, collecting pollen on their bodies and transferring it as they travel. These are solitary bees which make up the vast majority of the 270 species native to the UK. Unlike social bees, every solitary female is fertile and they build and maintain their own nests without the help of others. They produce neither wax nor honey but have a vital role as incredibly effective pollinators. Many of our crops, flowers and fruit trees are dependent on them for pollination and without it, cannot set seed. They’re great insects to have in your garden – a single red mason bee, for example, is the equivalent of 120

honey bees in the amount of pollination it provides. Solitary bees will appear on the wing as early as March, and be visible all the way through to September or October, depending on the weather. You can easily encourage and nurture them by ensuring you’ve got a good selection of nectar and pollen rich flowers in your window boxes, pots or borders. As we hurtle into spring, take a closer look at the garden coming to life and you may just spot a few of the solitary bees waking up… Red mason bees are one of the most obvious early bees around our homes and gardens. These vibrant little bees, 9-14mm long, get their ‘mason’ name because they use mud in the construction of their nests.

Females lay their eggs in cells in a tunnel - perhaps a hollow plant stem or a cavity in dead wood or an ancient wall - and furnish it with pollen and nectar before sealing the chamber ‘doors’ with mud and repeating the process. Quite amazingly the female bee can choose what type of egg she lays where – females in the rear chambers and males at the front of each tunnel (males appear first and will be ready to mate the females as they emerge). If a female at the back wakes up before the tunnel has emptied, she will bite through the mud separating her from the next bee and nip the bee in front on the bottom...prompting that bee to do the same... and so on and so on until all the bees have emerged.

11

Hairy-footed flower bee female PHOTO Wendy Carter

Hairy-footed flower bees amaze me. With them, it really is all in the name because the males have hairy feet and legs. These bees have a distinctive buzz and in spring, zoom like little torpedoes in search of food or, if they’re a boy, a girl! They adore clumps of pulmonaria, also called lungwort, and it wasn’t until I planted a couple of these specifically for them that I finally managed to attract them into my garden. I knew that female bees retreated to their nests in cold or wet weather but it wasn't until last spring that I’d considered that the males might do the same. I popped along to Snowshill Manor when no sooner had I arrived, the rain appeared. I spotted something zooming out of the corner of my eye and when I followed the 12

sound I found a male hairyfooted flower bee tucked into a hole in a wall, alongside several other buddies – all sheltering from the storm! Ashy mining bees are quite common in gardens in our part of the world and can sometimes be found in large aggregations. These smart looking charcoal coloured bees have two broad silvery bands on their back. They nest in tunnels that they dig underground. Last spring I found them in good numbers in Defford churchyard, just on the sunny edge of the ground underneath the yew trees where there wasn’t much grass growth. They’ll be flying around until June but their population tends to peak at the same time as the blossom on fruit trees. As with most solitary bees,

ashy mining bees are safe to have around. The females can sting but generally, they don’t. You really do have to annoy a solitary bee for this to happen meaning you, your children and your pets can potter in the garden quite happily in their company. Tawny mining bees are the most glamorous of all. To me, the female looks like she’s all dressed up to go to Cinderella’s ball with her vivid orange/red gown ready to take the wind out of Cinderella’s sails! They too can be found nesting in flower beds and lawns. I find it incredible that these girls can dig a tunnel that’s 20 -30cm long with several chambers for eggs. Once the eggs hatch, they eat the pollen and nectar that their mum left for them before pupating and emerging as an adult. The adults

Providing solitary bee hotels Solitary bees in Britain are highly diverse, therefore so are their nesting habits. They are categorised as either mining bees, which nest underground, or aerial nesters. The majority nest in the ground, excavating their own nest. The female chooses a suitable piece of land and uses her entire body to dig out a chamber. She then adds pollen to it, which is often moistened with nectar, and lays an egg. Finally, she seals off that section of the nest before moving onto the next chamber. A number of British species nest in the ground but also create distinctive turrets over them. If you want to encourage bees into your garden, providing sites

for their nests and putting up ready made hotels is a good place to start. Nest for mining bees All that mining bees need to dig their nests is a patch of bare earth or a very short cut lawn so many gardeners can accommodate them. One fine day each spring at our headquarters at Lower Smite Farm, one of us will spot mini volcanoes appearing in the lawn and some of our flower beds. It’s the sign that the bees have emerged! The spoil heaps may look a little unsightly but they won’t damage your lawn and the volcanoes will disappear in a matter of weeks so try to leave them if you can bear to. Nest for aerial nesters Aerial nesters often make homes in old beetle holes, sealing the nests

remain underground until spring before emerging into the air.

with a saliva like substance, mud, chewed leaves, resin or sections of leaves which they cut with their jaws. They can be encouraged into your garden by siting an artificial bee hotel like the one pictured previously on a wall or in a border. Different species will prefer crevices of varying widths so variety makes for an attractive feature in every respect. However, you can make a perfectly adequate homemade hotel by wedging a handful of shortened bamboo canes into a waterproof tin can. Alternatively, place a piece of (untreated) timber drilled with holes 90mm deep about one metre above ground level in a sunny place and it should do the trick. You can also drill into logs, wood blocks, fence posts, walls or bricks. 14

How does it feel to be taking over the reins from your parents after all these years? (Andrew) First of all, I am so pleased that Mum and Dad are finally able to enjoy their retirement! How has Vale evolved over the years? Dad (Vernon Powell) started out mending irons and appliances in 1969 in Vine Street and then Merstow Green. He went on (as a trained Hotpoint engineer himself) to expand and sell appliances before setting up the kitchen design business in the High Street. Beds and bedrooms were introduced when he took over Vale Interiors in 1986. In 1989 we set up the Cheltenham showroom, which has been thriving ever since. In 2009 Vale was named as one of

he arrangement, size and detailing of windows make up the ‘face’ of a building and have a significant impact on its character and appearance.

Window design has evolved over centuries and continues today, so how a window looks and the way that it is made, tells us a lot about the history and status of a building. Certain styles of window are linked to particular periods in history and also to geographical locations in

the same way that dry stone walls are characteristic of the Cotswolds. In terms of planning and conservation, windows make a real contribution to creating a sense of place or local identity. We all understand this, yet something that surprises many of our clients is the restrictions

Caring for your pets NEW!

linical excellence and innovative service are top of the agenda at Folly Gardens. Animal health, safety and comfort must always be our number one priority but finding ways to deliver patient care in a way that is convenient for owners comes a close second. It’s one aspect of the culture that attracted me to join the team permanently, having worked as a regular locum since 2013. Prior to joining I spent several years in a mixed animal practice in Ledbury, treating all creatures great and small. I trained at Liverpool University and have developed a keen interest in small animals, particularly emergency surgery and out of hours care so I am thrilled to be able to focus on these now. In recent months our team has developed three new services which demonstrate our desire to be continually moving forward. First, in response to client requests, we’ve made more late night and weekend consultations available. Our Bishop’s Cleeve branch is now open all day every Company Promotion

Vet Alice Martin of Folly Gardens, Tewkesbury and Bishop’s Cleeve on three new services which make it easier to keep your pet healthy.

Saturday from 8am to 4.30pm whilst our Tewkesbury branch is open all morning from 8am to 12.30pm. We are also open late on Monday and Friday evenings until 7.30pm. Secondly, our veterinary nurse consultations now offer advice on weight management and create individual nutrition plans to optimise your pet’s health. Thirdly, Folly Gardens is one of the first practices in the area to offer laparoscopic or keyhole surgery. Keyhole surgery has long been the preferred option for many forms of human surgery. It can be used for biopsies, making explorations to assist diagnosis, or conducting treatment itself and is much less invasive than ‘traditional’ open surgery. We also offer keyhole neutering and spaying for bitches over 7kg. We advise that all female cats and dogs are neutered unless you intend to breed from them. This latest technique is minimally invasive meaning smaller wounds and reduced discomfort, fewer restrictions on movement after surgery and the speediest

possible recovery. The result is happy pets and happy owners. For more details or advice on any pet issue please call us on 01684 292244 or 01242 679880.

planning school fees WORDS: Jo Potts

Funding private education is one of the biggest financial commitments a family can make.

M

any parents recognise the value an independent education can offer – but it isn’t getting any cheaper. Private school fees have increased by 3.6% over the course of a year. Latest figures from the Independent Schools Council (ISC) show that the average fee at an ISC school was £5,568 per term*. While the financial burden can be daunting, the key to affordability is to plan as early as you can. Saving soon after a child is born gives ten years to build a fund for when they go to secondary school. Generally, parents looking to fund school fees fall into three categories – those who want to invest a lump sum, those who would like to spread the cost of fees, or parents wanting to set up a regular savings scheme to provide funds to cover future fees. There are several schemes available to help make it more affordable, and an experienced wealth manager can draw up a investment plan that can be both tax-efficient and flexible. For example, you could use your

annual tax-efficient ISA allowance. By investing the maximum amount permitted in an ISA and selecting funds run by fulltime professional investment managers, a tidy sum could be accumulated within ten years. For grandparents, trust** planning can be a useful tool if they wish to make provision for school fees and also achieve Inheritance Tax (IHT) benefits. If they make regular payments from their income without reducing their lifestyle, then these gifts are not counted as part of their estate for IHT purposes. Another option is to give a lump sum for their grandchildren’s education and provided they survive for a further seven years, the gift is free of IHT. Grandparents might also want to consider other solutions, such as life assurance, which can be useful when there is more than one grandchild. With interest rates still at an all -time low, it is important to make your investments work as hard as possible for you. The history of financial markets has shown consistently that a measured, long -term view is always the best approach to investing. Today, it is more important than ever to be fully aware of all the solutions available so that you can make an informed choice for your personal wealth management.

Bringing life to your

GARDEN

With RHS Chelsea Gold medal winning designer, Richard Mercer.

C

ast your mind back to last year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show and you may remember that a theme common to several top garden designers was the use of rock, often large pieces placed in combination with water. These two natural materials, being solid and fluid, contrast well and offer almost limitless potential to bring your garden to life. Achieving good results with water is a specialist art requiring skill in construction and creative design. The secret of success lies in the combination of sound, colour and movement, plus skilled planting to give a natural effect. Depending on the mood you want to create, water can be used to create a rush of energy or a sense of calm. It also has an almost magical effect of 34

Company Promotion

attracting all types of wildlife. There are three main choices of water feature; ponds, stand alone or cascading. A pond can be large or small, formal or ‘wild’ and spans everything from a natural pool to something contemporary and clean edged. Stand alone water features consist of a pump within an underground tank supplying a ball, spout or fountain above the ground which circulates the water. In this category, there is a wide choice of design and materials from ready-made kits to bespoke features. Water can also be made to cascade down sloping ground to form anything from a natural rocky stream to an impressive stainless steel rill. The principles and process used are the same whether we are installing a miniature pond or

a vast lake, like the one we were responsible for at Gloucester South Services, just off the M5. Each project starts with an initial free consultation during which we explore your needs and assess your plot, before moving into the full design process. This ensures we always achieve a beautiful space, filled with life, that is attractive all year round and practical to maintain. Having trained at Pershore College over 20 years ago and been awarded an RHS Chelsea Gold Medal, we have completed numerous projects, both domestic and commercial. We focus on one project at a time and I am always on site myself to oversee the process. To book your free initial consultation please call on 07860 603598.

If you love the look of natural materials but want a practical solution for your home, take a look at luxury vinyl flooring, suggests Tewkesbury based Richard Westwood.

L

uxury Vinyl Tile, or LVT flooring is now a popular choice for many homeowners because it combines the warmth and beauty of wood or tiles with the versatility and convenience of vinyl. Designed to look like a variety of natural materials, it not only looks realistic, but feels it too, with the grain of wood or the worn patina of old tiles carefully reproduced. Durable, warm and quiet underfoot, it won’t move, crack, chip or get damaged by high heels so can be used in any room of the house. Since it’s also waterproof, it’s particularly useful in kitchens, bathrooms and others areas subject to spills or muddy feet. In terms of choice, there is a

vast range available as sheets, tiles or planks, including superb rustic and distressed options. Cleaning is simple too; there is no sanding, sealing or polishing, you simply sweep and mop. As a long standing, local family business our ethos is all about personal service; we treat every home as if it is our own. We offer a mobile service so if you’d like to arrange a free home visit please call us on 01684 298542. Afternoon Delight: Hot

Behind The Scenes...

With Caroline Lawrence from The Roses in Tewkesbury 2017 looks set to be quite a year for The Roses. A new Director, exciting new initiatives such as live streaming out of the building and the launch of the next phase of our redevelopment all promise to keep us busy and will no doubt present fresh challenges along the way too. During the recent recruitment process for our new Director, the candidates were asked to lead a discussion around the subject of the role of regional theatres in 2021. In every instance it proved to be an extremely interesting topic for debate, with many thoughts and opinions emerging. If there was one thing all agreed on, though, it was this: in order to survive in a world of funding deficits and ever increasing

competition, arts centres must become more than “just” an entertainment venue that relies on its artistic programme alone to attract audiences through its doors (although that is, of course, very important!). The Roses already does this well. As an Arts Council England (ACE) National Portfolio Organisation (NPO), our work within and around the local community is already well recognised both regionally and nationally. As I write, we are about to submit our NPO application for 2018-22, which if we are successful in will see us retain our ACE funding for another 4 years. At the beginning of this article I mentioned live streaming. This is an excellent example of a way in which a venue can expand its artistic provision, reach a wider audience and generate new income. I am incredibly excited to be involved in the piloting of this new

Drink & Slice of Cake for £3 Between 2pm - 5pm every day. Offer ends 30/04

venture, which we launch in the next few months and which is also supported by ACE. The opportunities it presents are breathtaking. We will be able to broadcast anything we like (plays, live music events, pantomime, as examples) to schools, nursing homes, or anybody that would find it difficult to come to us. We wouldn’t be bound by geography either – I love the idea of a classroom full of pupils in America watching an evening performance here during their afternoon lesson, and there is no reason why this couldn’t happen. This is just one example of how a venue like The Roses is keeping ahead of the game, pioneering new initiatives and not only surviving but thriving as a result.

’Gras FEVER An abundance of Asparamadness is about to invade the Vale of Evesham between 23rd April and 21st June. Don’t miss it!

I

T’S OFFICIAL - Vale of Evesham Asparagus is now a protected delicacy. This exquisite green vegetable grown in the heart of Worcestershire, of which we are so proud, has received the supreme culinary prestige of being awarded PGI European protected food name status. It now joins the elite group of food and drinks which include Champagne, Cognac and Roquefort to name but a few. St George’s Day sees the launch of the British Asparagus Festival in the Vale of Evesham – from then until 21st June the whole area will be going asparamad and turning green with a profusion of events that will offer numerous opportunities to taste, buy, cook and learn about this most sought after delicacy. Why not join in?

The famous asparagus auctions at The Fleece, are always a popular ritual, with hundreds gathering in the courtyard to bid for the season’s largest, freshest local asparagus, often under intense media scrutiny. Or maybe celebrate the Vale Gras in style with our amazing 5Km family colour run at The Valley in Evesham. Asparagus green paint bombs will be raining down on you as you manoeuvre the family friendly multi-terrain route. For further information call 01386 565373 or visit our website.

Policing South Worcestershire

Lethal Highs with Policing Commander for South Worcestershire, Supt. Kevin Purcell

W

est Mercia Police has launched the Lethal Highs campaign to warn people of the dangers of taking psychoactive substances. Formerly known as so-called 'legal highs', these substances are not safe and not legal hence #notsafenotlegal. The effects of psychoactive substances Psychoactive substances are chemical materials that mimic the effects of traditional illegal drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis (excluding legal stimulants such as alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, caffeine and medical products). They come in lots of different forms including powders, pills and herbs and can be sold under brand names like ‘Bliss,’ Clockwork Orange’ and ‘Mary Jane.’ Their effects can be divided into four categories:  Stimulants which can make you feel energised, physically active, fast-thinking, chatty and euphoric.  Downers or sedatives which can make you feel euphoric, relaxed or sleepy.  Hallucinogens or psychedelics which create altered perceptions and can make you see and/or hear things that aren’t there. They can also induce feelings of warmth, euphoria, enlightenment * Source: Office for National Statistics

and a sense of being detached from the world.  Synthetic cannabinoids which act similarly to cannabis creating a sense of relaxation, altered consciousness, disinhibition, or energy and euphoria. The dangers of psychoactive substances Psychoactive substances also have negative side effects similar to the drugs they imitate, such as breathing difficulties, heart palpitations, paranoia, psychosis, hallucinations, seizures, coma and death. They can and do kill. In the West Midlands region alone there were fifteen deaths registered in 2014 and six in 2015 as a direct result of lethal highs. Nationally, there were 114 deaths in 2015, up from 82 in the previous year.* One of the real problems with psychoactive substances is that they can look so innocuous, especially to a young person. They are often packaged attractively and the packaging may give a list of ingredients but since the drugs are imported illegally, there is no way of knowing that the list is accurate or what contents are really held inside. That means a person can never be certain about what they have bought or been given by a

friend. These drugs will not have been tested as safe for human consumption and little is known about their long term effects. Enforcement and support The Psychoactive Substances Act 2016, introduced last May, is currently being enforced by police, trading standards officers, Border Force and the National Crime Agency alongside the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Punishments range from a formal warning to seven years in prison. National counselling services are also in place. For advice and details of local support please visit www.talktofrank.com Anyone who has information about the supply of psychoactive substances can call us on 101. Information can be passed on anonymously by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-uk.org For the most up to date information please follow our campaign on social media using the hashtag #notsafenotlegal @SuptKevPurcell

Tree expertise There are three options for improving the shape of a tree that has outgrown its position suggests Tim Coppin.

I

f a tree on your land has become too dominant, unshapely or is casting too much shade, there may be several ways to approach it: Crown reduction reduces the height and/or spread of the crown (the main foliage bearing portions of a tree). It is useful for reducing stress on individual branches or the whole tree; making the tree smaller in size and alleviating the extent of shading and light loss. The main framework of the tree and a significant proportion of its branches are retained to replicate the existing outline. Not all species are suitable for this treatment but a properly qualified tree surgeon will be able to advise. Crown reduction should not be confused with ‘topping’ which is the harmful and indiscriminate act of cutting

NVQ / NPTC Qualified & CHAS Accredited off the top of a tree. Crown thinning involves the removal of up to a third of the smaller branches of a tree, usually at the outer crown. This produces an even shape, allows more light to penetrate and reduces wind damage. Crown lifting is the removal of the lowest branches of a tree and/or the preparation of lower branches for future removal, usually on younger specimens. It is effective for increasing light transmission and ensuring clearance at ground level but is not suitable if you want to raise the canopy more than 15% of the total height of the tree. Trees may be subject to preservation or conservation orders and contravening these is a criminal offence. Before you employ anyone, we recommend ensuring that they have

appropriate qualifications, experience and insurance. Obtain a fixed quote for the work required, be clear about how long it is likely to take, and what will and won’t be included. A professional will have:  NVQ/NPTC qualification  CHAS accreditation  professional equipment  insurance documentation  references We are a team of five qualified professionals, based in Beckford. We undertake all types of projects quickly and efficiently including tree surgery, site clearance, hard and soft landscaping, fencing, equestrian and agricultural projects. Please call us on 07557 536 391 or 01386 882 436 for advice.

Chocolate Chiboust

With a melting texture and intense flavour this simple recipe is ideal for supper with friends. Serve it on a platter with a scoop of raspberry sorbet, a jug of crème anglaise and a spoon of ganache and it becomes a sublime tasting plate.

INGREDIENTS 450g dark chocolate 380g egg whites (approx. 10-12 eggs, see tip opposite) 180g caster sugar 8 egg yolks *

Egg whites are easily overbeaten. You want them to reach the stage at which they hold soft peaks on a spoon. Egg whites that have been allowed to stand at room temperature for half an hour will beat up higher and faster than cold ones. The easiest way to beat egg whites is to use an electric whisk on medium and regularly scrape the sides of the bowl.

Serves 14 56

METHOD  Separate and weigh the eggs, measuring 380g of whites and setting aside 8 yolks.  Whisk the egg whites and sugar in a large squeaky clean bowl to make a soft peaks meringue - take care not to over whisk beyond this point.*  Melt the chocolate in a large heatproof bowl placed over a small pan of simmering water.  Add the egg yolks to the melted chocolate and combine.  Gently fold the meringue into the chocolate mixture.  Pour into 14 individual heatproof dishes or glass ramekins. Refrigerate if making ahead  Half an hour before serving, remove from the fridge to bring up to room temperature.  Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.  Bake at 180degrees for 8-9 minutes until they are just set but still slightly liquid in the centre.  Simply dust with icing sugar or serve as part of a tasting plate as suggested above.

Recipe courtesy of Steve Waites, Michelin trained chef and proprietor of Belle House Restaurant & Bar, Bridge Street, Pershore, WR10 1AJ. www.belle-house.co.uk

Did you know? Them most accurate way to achieve the perfect chiboust is to separate your eggs before you begin and carefully weigh your whites. For 380g of egg whites you will need 10-12 eggs, depending on their size.
