Hello... …and welcome to the May/June issue. It’s a beautiful morning as a write this; the sun is out and so are the bluebells, the lambs are racing up and down the field, and I’m immersed in work I love. It’s also the day after we all heard about the death of Peaches Geldof and as I’ve moved through the morning I’ve been trying to fathom how these things can coexist; the beauty and the pain of the world. It’s got me thinking, again, about what it is that enables us to find meaning in our lives. One way is to feel connected to others through relationships that matter; family, friends and the wider community. We’re so lucky to live in a place where community ties remain strong, demonstrated in so many ways throughout this magazine; by the traditional summer events organised to preserve the fabric of our villages; by the British Asparagus Festival and new Upton FAB Festival, both set up to celebrate local food heroes; by the campaign to build Worcestershire Breast Care Unit; and by the fantastic prizes donated for our competitions, this time by Eckington Manor, Upton FAB Festival and The Roses. It’s my privilege to bring all this together in one place and to connect you to an ever growing number of local traders and organisations. I hope you enjoy this issue and remember that you can now keep in touch with Life in the Village every day on twitter. It’s fun, easy and completely free so join in the conversation. Until next time,

Why We All Need Worcestershire

Breast Care Unit

We talked to the Worcestershire Breast Care Team, Consultants Steven Thrush, Rachel Bright-Thomas & Michelle Mullan about their vital work.

What is the purpose of the new breast care unit? It will give us a suitable setting in which to care for the one in three women in the County who will need to see a breast care specialist at some point in their life. One in eight women and one in 1000 men will develop this disease in their lifetime. In Worcestershire, that equates to 600 people diagnosed with breast cancer every year. The scale of this illness is such that it affects us all; ourselves, our families or our friends. Everybody knows somebody.

How are patients currently cared for? We have a specialist team providing excellent care but we desperately need dedicated space and facilities to develop new and more efficient services. Currently, breast patients in Worcestershire share crowded clinics with other services; can’t have all the investigations on their first assessment, making return visits necessary; have to visit services across several floors of the hospital, with repeated queuing, dressing and undressing; do not receive

radiography results immediately; are often referred out of the County and have a much more time-consuming and stressful experience than they need to. Most people who come fear they have cancer so, whatever their results, the process is frightening. Everyone with symptoms needs rapid and thorough assessment and those with breast cancer require the most efficient and stream-lined care possible. What is your vision? We already have a site for the new

Unit (pictured above) which will be at based at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital. It will provide rapid efficient assessment and care; treatment in welcoming and private surroundings; facilities that will maximise the skills of our specialist teams; fewer return visits; good news delivered swiftly; space for complementary therapies and support group meetings; counselling rooms for reflection and discussion; new clinical equipment, including an ultrasound machine for sole use by the breast unit and highresolution imaging screens; flexible space for use by support groups as well as other patient activities and a prosthesis fitting room.

Great news for garden lovers... L&L, in tandem with established Welsh supplier, Nordic Garden Buildings, have launched a brand new range of stand alone glass buildings which have a wide range of applications. Director, John Lannen explains.

takes traditional garden buildings to a whole new level. With a selection of styles, sizes and roof types, plus six colour options, there is one to suit all tastes, settings and budgets. The range incorporates a unique roof beam construction which means the gutters are load bearing and blend seamlessly into the building. Perhaps the best feature of these garden buildings is the wide range of functions they can fulfil. From a bolthole to enjoy alone to a space to socialise with family and friends, they have multiple applications and can be used on a variety of occasions during the year. A standard model from the

TEWKESBURY CLASSIC VEHICLE FESTIVAL

NEW! Craft Fayre Too The Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle festival was created for the lovers of all classic and vintage vehicles to enjoy a by-gone age of engineering. Yet today, this 100% charitable event caters for all the family, reports Ted Elwes of Tewkesbury Rotary Club.

I

f you want a great family day out this summer, mark Sunday 17th August in your diary. Our festival is unique to Tewkesbury and bigger than most other vehicle rallies that take place locally. We expect over 400 exciting and classic cars and bikes. Tewkesbury School (GL20 8LF) is a great location, within easy walking distance of town, and 200 yards from M5 J9. The Festival opens at

11am. Recent entries ranged from a 1904 Peugeot Open Tourer to a De Lorean and a Jensen Healey. A special visitor last year was a pre war Rolls Royce Phantom 11, (pictured) now owned by Roger Head of Highnam. The son of the original owner, a Swiss banker, was re-united with the car at the Festival. When you’ve had your fill of cars and bikes the Heywood sisters will be singing the favourite period songs you love. There are fine teas, cakes, burgers and hot dogs plus a licensed bar, over 120 trade stands and market stalls, selling everything from auto-jumble parts to jewellery, crafts and furniture. Please visit our website to find out more.

www.tewkesburycvf.org

Sunday 17th August Craft Stalls Wanted! Do you run a craft business, producing anything from jewellery to jam? Last year we started a successful “market” area including 80 pitches taken by craftsmen and women producing a huge variety of goods. With good weather, more than 1000 people passed through the gate to see the classic cars & bikes and visit the craft market. This year, we are offering 3m x 3m pitches plus a car space for £17.50 each. Craft stall holders will be grouped near to food and drink. Stalls are offered on a first come, first served basis so book early to secure the best location. To book your pitch please call us at on 01684 850940 / 07976 950856 or send an email via the ‘trade stand’ page on our website www.tewkesburycvf.org

Classic Car/Bike Owners Bring your classic car or bike and gain free entrance for the driver. Register on our website or mark the date in your diary and just come along on the day. Classic car owners who want to be sited together should arrive together. Those erecting gazebos etc. are advised to come early. All proceeds will go to ROTARY charities.

Four simple stages to

Reach Your Financial Goals We all have goals in life. Small goals, big goals; goals for ourselves, goals for our children. A dream home, a comfortable retirement, a holiday bolthole, a private education for our kids, a nest egg for our grandchildren or a special holiday. Local Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) Paul Urmston explains how to meet them. Stage 1 Define Your Goals Sounds easy - but it isn’t just about the amount of money you need, it’s about the amount of time available to reach the goal. Identifying each of these will help you shape the journey in your head; for example; what age will your children be when they start their private education; when do you want to retire? Stage 2 Quantify Your Goals This requires research and information. If you want a big

JOIN US ON Sunday 4th May 10am-5pm Tiddesley Wood Open Day, Pershore

The imposing stature of Bredon Hill is familiar to all who live in its shadow. But are you as familiar with the abundant wildlife that resides there? Wendy Carter of WWT explains more.

B Linnet Karen Summers

Veteran Tree Harry Green

redon Hill is one of the most important sites for wildlife in the county and parts of it are designated as a Special Area of Conservation; giving it European protection. In fact, it’s the fourth best site in the UK for something most of us will never see; small insects! These rely on the veteran trees scattered across the surviving ancient parkland; with the hedgerows they are home to more than 100 of the UK’s rarest or most scarce species. Exactly what age a tree becomes ‘veteran’ depends on the species but it’s basically when it is old enough to be hollow or contain rotting heartwood. Veterans – and Bredon has many of them – are important for fungi, lichens, beetles and insects. Hollow and

rotting trees are, of course, also brilliant for roosting bats and nesting birds. Trees aside, Bredon Hill is significant because of the mix of habitats found there; green woodpeckers feed on ants in the grassland; butterflies and bees rely on bramble in the hedgerows whilst common whitethroat and linnet breed in the scrub and small bushes. This mix also helps to provide food and shelter for rare and uncommon birds when they’re flying between breeding and wintering grounds; look out for dotterel, ring ouzel, whinchat, wheatear and more. So next time you go for a walk up Bredon Hill, perhaps you’ll think about all the things you can’t see as well as those you can!

Keen gardeners in Ashton under Hill are working hard on their planting and pruning in time for their 37th annual Open Gardens event, which takes place on Saturday 7 th and Sunday 8 June 2014. Over 1000 visitors are expected over the weekend, arriving from all over the UK and often overseas. They will be able to enjoy strolling around over 20 varied and interesting gardens, ranging from small cottage garden plots to larger landscaped grounds. Chairman of the organising committee, John Dodge said: “Many of our visitors comment on what a warm and friendly welcome they receive and some of them come back every year because there’s always something new to see.” This year, to reflect the World Cup, the theme is ‘The Wonderful World of Plants.’ Gardeners will

highlight examples of non-native species, children from local schools will be involved and there will be an exhibition of photographs and pictures in St Barbara’s Church. If you need to rest and relax there will be several places to enjoy cream teas and other refreshments. Ashton’s renowned Plantsman’s Market will be offering specimens from local nurseries at very keen prices. Admission to the event is £5 for adults, under 16’s free, which gives entry to all gardens and attractions. Parking is free and there is also a complimentary shuttle bus around the village. Gardens will be open from 1.00pm to 6.00pm each day. Pet Talk How Vet Nurses Can Help You & Your Pet May is Veterinary Nurse Awareness month. Rachel Smallwood, Practice Manager of Folly Gardens Vets, Tewkesbury and Bishops Cleeve explains their contribution to pet wellbeing.

o

nly vets and qualified vet nurses under veterinary instruction are legally allowed to perform even simple procedures on animals such as blood sampling. Not all clinics employ qualified, registered nurses but we’re proud to say that we have a team of ten working across our three clinics. Eight have daily contact with pets, two of us are now in management roles and we have one trainee. We are a registered training practice which means we invest in training nurses to a high standard and help them extend their knowledge by continually furthering their education in the latest products and techniques. Nurses spend a minimum of two years training and must pass written and practical exams to achieve the Veterinary Nursing qualification, NVQ Level Three. As part of their education, they learn about anatomy and physiology, husbandry, anaesthesia, radiography, nutrition and surgical nursing. Once qualified, nurses must take part in a minimum of 15 hours Continued Professional Development annually to remain on the list of registered vet nurses. This is made up of a

combination of courses and conferences, reading professional journals and attending in-house ‘lunch and learn’ sessions. All qualified nurses wear a badge to demonstrate their membership of the profession. Our nurses spend much of their days looking after the animals that are staying with us. These pets will be poorly or undergoing an operation so snuggles are never very far away. Nurses also spend time in the consulting room, discussing with owners what food will best maintain their pets’ wellbeing despite a diagnosed illness, or ensure they shed a few pounds. Nurses routinely carry out nail clips, post operative checks, anal gland emptying as well as examinations as part of the Pet Health Plan. They help run the puppy parties which take place every three weeks or so at Walton Cardiff and our cat only clinic. More recently, they have also helped owners overcome certain pet behaviour problems. Complimentary nurse consultations run from 9-1pm and 4- 6.30pm Monday to Friday. Please call the clinic to book your appointment. Look out for special offers in branches and on Facebook during May.

Hi, We took out the above plan earlier this year having previously been with British Gas. Over the past week or so we had occasion to put your service to the test when our boiler developed an intermittent fault that resulted in it cutting out periodically. If your property is stolen this information will help the police recover your items and prove your ownership. Window Stickers To deter burglars you can obtain window stickers from the police or your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme that say your property is security marked.

SECURITY marking West Mercia police offer advice on how to secure your belongings.

S

ecurity marking valuable items will discourage burglars from stealing them by making it difficult to sell them on. It will also help the police to ensure they are returned to you if they are stolen but subsequently found. You should mark your property with your postcode and the number and name of your house. You can security mark property in a number of ways as follows:  Permanent Marking using an engraving tool and a stencil  Invisible Marking using an ultra violet (UV) pen to write on your details. The ink when dried is almost invisible to the human eye but shows up under special light. UV pen markings tend to fade over time, so it is best to reapply every six months.  Forensic marking using DNA technology to mark property with a special code which is unique to the owner, allowing property to be easily identified.  Photographs Some items such as jewellery and antiques are not suitable for marking. In these cases, it is a good idea to take photos of such

Immobilise It! Once you have security marked your property, go a step further and place it on the national property register, Immobilise, which can be found at www.immobilise.com. This online checking service is used by all UK police forces to trace owners of lost and stolen property. In addition Immobilise is checked daily by a huge range of recovery agencies and lost property offices. As a direct result of Immobilise there are over 250 cases a week where property is returned or information collected that assists the police in investigating criminal activity involving stolen goods. Should you have any items stolen, you will find it easier to deal with insurance companies as well.

Got an Issue in Your Village? Communities can play an active role in the fight against crime by providing us with valuable information about what is happening in your area. If you have any information or concerns you can raise them by contacting your Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101 or dial 999 in an emergency. You can also call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 to report information anonymously.

Phil Eberlin of GMHS has over three decades of experience in the garden machinery industry. We asked him for some tips on getting the most from your mower this season. What’s the most common mower problem? Without question, it’s damage to carburettors caused by using out of date fuel. Many gardeners don’t realise that fuel will go off and cause issues if stored in machinery for any length of time. Given the requirements of the EC Directive regarding fuel content, this is set to become more of an issue in the future. New regulations state that 10% of the fuel that manufacturers produce has to be renewable which means that it will have a higher ethanol content. Ethanol attacks anything that has rubber in it, like fuel pipes. The vapours also absorb moisture from the atmosphere, creating gum deposits on the carburettor which will ultimately cause a blockage. How can we prevent carburettor damage? The solution is to use Fuel Fit, an inexpensive fuel stabiliser which costs just £4.20 for enough to treat approximately ten gallons. You simply put a measure in your fuel can each time and pour it into

the system. It will help your engine start and run smoothly and help prevent gum deposits. Any tips on maintaining garden equipment? Now is the time to check, overhaul and sharpen all your garden equipment. We service and maintain all makes of mowers and garden machinery. All work is guaranteed and with a large selection of spare parts in stock we can ensure a fast turn around, usually within the week. With 30 years in the industry, we have accrued the knowledge to help you choose the most suitable equipment for your needs. We only deal in top quality, sustainable goods and are agents for Oregon, market leader based in Tewkesbury, and many others. Why not call and see if we can help you? For more information please pop into Highfield Business Park, Deerhurst, call 01684 299995 or order online at www.gmhs.co.uk
