Hello... …and welcome to the winter issue. Sitting here in the afternoon sunshine, with the sky blue and the leaves still clinging to the trees, it’s hard to imagine a wintery gale buffeting against the windows. The lanes slippery with ice. The challenge of my alarm clock on a freezing January morning. There’s a bit of me that dreads winter but over the last few years I’ve tried hard to find all the positives in it. I’ve learned that like most things in life, so much depends upon how you view it. There’s a woman I know who talks about loving the dark nights; she takes comfort in drawing the curtains on the world at 4pm and just being at home with her family. The first time she told me this, her words took me by surprise. I sensed that it might be a good idea to stop longing for warmth and sunshine, and instead, reset my thinking. Winter is, after all, a great time to reflect on the journey you are taking, enjoy the pleasures of food and fire, recharge and plan new ways of being. Looking forward to 2014, there’s so much to be positive about life in the villages locally. Amongst other things, we bring you news of a brand new local foodie event and two great competitions so be sure to get yourself involved. I am so grateful to all the inspiring people, businesses and organisations who have supported our magazines this year. Here’s wishing you a warm and healthy winter. Enjoy the festivities! Until next time,

Lisa

Worcestershire

Breast Care Unit A message from one of the Campaign’s Lead Patron, Mrs Michael Brinton DL

A

s some of you may know my husband Michael had formerly been one of the patrons of this Charity; in 2012 he sadly died of cancer. One of the most comforting experiences was the wonderful treatment he and we were given and how that made the cancer journey much easier. To know you were going to see the same friendly faces each time and that they all cared about the service they offered. This was the N.H.S. at its best and there are extraordinary pockets of

outstanding work going on in some of our Hospitals. This is what we wish to create here in Worcestershire with the new Breast Care Unit and I know Michael would wish me to carry on the work he started and felt so passionate about. Thank You - Funds Raised The Worcester-Brest Challenge, this summer, raised a grand total of £5517.65 The Campaign has now raised to date a grand total of £1,119,124. As ever, thank you to everyone who does so

much for the new Breast Care Unit. Progress on Two Fronts The last few months has seen major progress both with the fundraising and the project. Back in July there was a reception at the new University Arena to announce formally the appointment of Professor David Green and I as new Lead Patrons. Also at this reception was Harry Turner, Chairman of the Worcestershire Hospitals Acute NHS Trust, who

announced that the NHS Trust was prepared to provide underwriting so that the project could start work before the campaign target is reached. At that time this meant the Campaign needed to raise a further £340,000 to trigger the start of works. With good campaign income since July this figure has reduced to £160,000. In August 2013 a Project Board was set up containing representatives of the Charity and the NHS Trust to oversee the delivery of the project. This work is now well under way and final designs and costs are due by the end of December.

How You Can Help Thousands of local people, businesses and organisations have helped already by making donations and running an incredible variety of events to raise money. Property Talk With Denise James, Director of independent local estate agents Gusterson Palmer & James.

T

he positive upturn in the housing market seen nationally this summer has continued during the autumn months, consolidating a healthier picture locally. It is important to remain realistic about house prices and continually review emerging trends but higher levels of confidence do seem to be bringing greater momentum to sales at the present time. The Government’s Help to Buy Scheme on new homes extends to resale properties in 2014. Happily, another trend that continues unabated is our position as the leading agent for house sales in the Evesham area. Independent company For Sale Sign Analysis regularly conduct a local survey of estate agents boards. We are proud to report that, based on their survey collected on 27/8/13, we

once again had more Sold signs than any other agent locally. The margin we won by was also significant. Gusterson Palmer and James had 30.3% of the Sold signs displayed in the Evesham area, an achievement reflecting the dedication and professionalism of our experienced team. The Directors here, myself and Jon James, have been collectively selling homes for over 40 years. Being independent means we can respond quickly to market patterns. As well as sales we offer a range of letting services from full management of your property to simply drawing up a tenancy agreement. To book a free expert appraisal of your property for sale or to let please call our team on 01386 761241.

Pet Talk How To Make The Best Pet Care Affordable

Ask me about the Folly Gardens Pet Health Plan

A

t Folly Gardens we treat a lot of working dogs like police, army, guide and sheep dogs. It is essential that these dogs are kept in excellent health because as a working member of a team they are a vital asset. For this reason, as well as insuring their animals against accident or illness with a scheme such as PetPlan, many of our working dog clients also choose to put their dogs on our lifelong preventative healthcare programme called the Folly Gardens Pet Health Plan. Good quality pet cover is an important consideration for pet owners as it alleviates the worry of the potentially costly financial implications of veterinary treatment. It allows you and your vet to make decisions based upon what is best for your pet rather than look at the cost/benefit of each option. Our plan was devised by looking at the cost of essential treatments such as neutering, vaccinations, flea treatments, worming and dentals - totting up the figure, applying a discount and then dividing the cost into affordable monthly payments. This combination of Folly

Expert Advice on how to provide the best care in the most affordable way for your dogs, cats and small animals from Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens, Tewkesbury, and Bishops Cleeve.

Gardens Pet Health Plan and Petplan proved invaluable to one of our farming clients. Lewis, a one year old Welsh Border Collie, specially bred by his owners to be the farm’s next sheepdog, was bitten on the foot by an adder whilst at work on Bredon Hill. Snake bites in dogs can be serious and it soon became clear that Lewis was in trouble. I took care of Lewis from his first emergency treatment, and soft tissue operations, through to his rehabilitation. A long road to recovery lay ahead as the bite and subsequent reaction resulted in him losing all of the skin on his foreleg. He needed daily dressing changes and, eventually, skin grafts. Luckily for Lewis and his owners they were able to receive the best treatment available, including visits to an internationally renowned soft tissue specialist in Birmingham, because all the cost was covered by their Petplan insurance. His preventative care continues to be covered by our Health Plan. Happily, he is now fully recovered and works daily on the farm locally - an enthusiastic and invaluable sheep dog.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT From 30th September 2013 the role of police community support officers (PCSOs) has changed. Across West Mercia Police, PCSOs have been granted new powers and will be working longer hours to help keep communities safe from harm.

WHAT ARE PCSOs?

P

CSOs are members of police staff who carry out a range of activities to support regular police officers. With their distinctive uniform, their main role is to undertake high visibility patrols out in the community. By taking the time to talk to people and getting to know their local area, they are 'eyes and ears' of the community. They are trained to calm heated situations and defuse hostility, but are not expected to deal with violent incidents, including arrests, and have radio access so they can call for assistance if necessary. In addition to their patrol, day-to-day activities include dealing with minor offences, offering early interventions to deter people from

As part of the changes the hours a PCSO can work are also being extended they can now be deployed until midnight, when there is an operational requirement.

Great Christmas Gift! This project has been cost neutral. All funds raised will be used to create a child friendly memorial for Diana in Cropthorne for her children and the community.

DIANA’S CALENDAR Diana's Calendar reveals local people in tasteful scenes taken around the Vale of Evesham. We talked to Sally Mothersole about a project that has brought the local community together. Every scene was sketched by local artist, Liz Smith and when people saw how tasteful they were they began putting their names down for various shots they wanted to be part of. Andrew Jackson of TimeLock Photography was so skilled at making the shoots easy and relaxed; nothing was too much trouble despite some quite remarkable circumstances! David Mothersole edited and designed the calendar to a professional standard and Andrew Evans from Digital Ink How did you achieve the help and funding required? After Diana was tragically taken from us, a small group of friends decided to club together and try to raise funds for a handmade memorial story teller chair to be situated at Diana's favourite playground in Cropthorne for her three beautiful girls and the community. Thinking of upgrading your car? Shaun Taylor of Car Trade Direct suggests a two step process as the way to achieve the most from your money. We asked him to explain more. Why should I sell my car and then buy another? New car sales are up. There is now a 3-4 month waiting list for some models so good deals are harder to achieve. As a cash buyer you will have much more power to push for a discount off your new car. Without the hassle of having to dispose of your old car, a dealer will be able to give you a better price. This is especially true if the car you are selling is desirable on the resale market. So what would make my car desirable? 30 Years of Caring Fundraising Director Tricia Cavell explains how you can support the life enhancing work of the team at St Richard’s Hospice.

W

e at St Richard’s are looking forward to celebrating our 30th anniversary in 2014 and with your help we can fulfil our vision of doing all we can to support our patients and their families now and in the future. We help families through difficult times each and every day. Christmas can be especially hard when you are living with a life-threatening illness and your future is uncertain. We aim to make every moment count for our patients and families. We can only fulfil this commitment with your help. We rely on you for as much as 70% of our funding, so the majority of patients are cared for using your donations, including gifts in Wills. This Christmas please give St Richard’s Hospice a gift for the future. A gift in a Will is an extremely

generous, thoughtful and caring way to donate to St Richard’s. Leaving a gift in your Will is easy and it can be for as little as 1% of what you leave behind. Families always come first, but please think of St Richard’s and help us to continue to be here for the local community for years to come. Leaving a gift in a Will may also save on your inheritance tax. We are delighted that due to unexpected and generous gifts in Wills we have brought forward plans to meet the specialist palliative and end of life care needs within the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week . Income from gifts in Wills has allowed us to increase the number of Hospice at Home staff to 11 so we can help more patients stay at home if that is their wish. For example, with our Hospice at Home help, a patient who wanted to leave hospital and

die in their own home, surrounded by their family, was able to do so at short notice. Gifts in Wills have also helped us to start expanding our Inpatient Unit to care for more patients and offer greater privacy in more single rooms. The new extension will open in our 30th anniversary year, 2014. If you feel you are able to help by leaving a Gift to the hospice in your Will, whenever the time is right for you, your generous gift will allow us to offer our existing services and look to the future. If you would like to discuss leaving a gift in your Will, please contact Fundraising Director Tricia Cavell on 01905 763963 or email tcavell@strichards.org.uk St Richard’s Hospice is located just off the M5 J7 at Wildwood Drive, Worcester WR5 2QT

What does St Richard’s do? St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and supports their families. Patients are cared for in a Day Hospice, the 16-bed In-patient Unit or in their own homes by a specialist professional team as well as many trained volunteers. Find out more about how you can volunteer or support the hospice’s fundraising initiatives by visiting www.strichards.org.uk or call 01905 763 963.

Although he was very poorly it was also a magical and memorable time at St Richard’s. There were snowmen outside around the duck pond and a lovely atmosphere inside. The nurses were dressed in elves costumes, sang carols and even gave small presents for Christmas. The doctors and nurses at St Richard’s were such experts that they eased all his pain and Dad could enjoy Christmas with the family. It was such a special time for us. Reg. Charity No. 515668

Life in the Village On Twitter Our four magazines, The Bredon, Avon & Severn, Folly View and Cotswold Edge Directories, offer you a slice of country life. Now, there's a new way to keep in touch in between issues. WORDS: Lisa Lambon

A Slice of Country Life

H

aving lived roughly half of my life in each, I’m aware of the many subtle ways that life in the village differs to life in the town. You can’t put a value on living in the countryside - the slower pace, the sense of belonging and the vast expanses of green - and yet there are several issues that make running a rural home or business harder on a practical level. The expense, the rigours of travel, the lie of the land and the impact of the weather are all factors in our minds when putting together our publications. Our aim is to offer you a useful local guide. We take note of all your feedback and work hard to try and make every edition better than the last. Number one on my list of Things That Would Improve My Life would be a supersonic, weather proof, flying carpet to transport my family and I, wherever we want to be, at a moment’s notice. I haven't managed to find one of those yet but I have found the answer to another wish - for a kind of community megaphone that would connect me, at

any time, to a community of like minded people who have something positive to share about living in the countryside locally. It’s free and simple to use, and it comes in the form of our newly launched Life in the Village Twitter account. Thank you to everyone who has found and followed us so far. It’s early days but already, it’s proved to be a fantastic way to share local news and events, source information, keep up with rural issues and connect with interesting and inspiring people. We tweet about anything relevant to life and business in the villages locally and if you run a local company you’ll often find us on #WorcestershireHour each Monday from 8-9pm. Gulls may not be the most popular form of wildlife, near or far, but some of their bad press is unwarranted. Wendy Carter of WWT explains why we’ve really only got ourselves to blame...

O Red Admiral on Bee Hotel Blackberries

Fieldfare stripping Apple Tree

kay, I admit it; gulls aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but can I persuade you otherwise? The last 30-40 years have seen an explosion in the number of gulls inland - we’ve steadily been providing brilliant gull-fast-food havens in the form of landfill sites, litter and town centres and we’ve been overfishing their traditional food. As intelligent, inquisitive and opportunistic birds we shouldn’t really be surprised that they’ve started to move inland. Urban and industrial areas attract breeding gulls that can travel many miles for food each day. The landfill site in Throckmorton in our more rural southern part of the county, for example, is often visited by gulls that may roost as far afield as the Severn estuary each evening. Look above your

heads as the light begins to dim and you’ll probably see streams of gulls heading back to roost after spending time filling their tums at Throckmorton. Research has shown that black-headed gulls from as far as Eastern Europe, Russia and Scandinavia regularly return to this site. Life on the coast, by contrast, is much harder – gulls compete with us for fish stocks, the weather is harder and predators abound. Despite the rise in inland gulls, their overall numbers are actually declining – by 50% since 1970. I’m sure that a landfill diet isn’t really doing them any favours but next time you find yourself cursing them, I’d ask you to spare a thought for these clever and adaptable birds that are just trying to share our world and make the most of the hand we’ve dealt them.
