Welcome... …to the winter issue. What does success mean to you? The American author and poet Maya Angelou defines it as ‘liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it.’ A difficult thing to achieve, it seems, from a quick survey of my friends and colleagues. The holiday season is a natural time to reflect on the journey we are taking and make changes ready for the New Year. So why not commit to one simple thing which will help you feel more satisfied when you measure yourself against this definition? Looking ahead, there is much for us all to be positive about in our villages locally, albeit a few challenges left on the agenda. The last twelve months have seen a period of growth for many local businesses. We’re grateful to everyone who has supported us this year, both in print and on our growing twitter account. This season, we’ll be working hard on changes to keep our offering relevant and fresh so look out for your next issue which will arrive late in February. From 2015, our four magazines will be known as Life in the Village. This change brings together our printed magazines, online presence and twitter account, giving you three ways to access information on local country living under one name. Until next time,

Dancing
SKIES A murmuration of starlings is a spectacular natural phenomenon and the one near Pershore earlier this year attracted a huge amount of interest. But what’s it all about? Wendy Carter of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust offers her insight.
16
I
’ve lost track of how many times I’ve frozen to the spot watching starlings dance in our skies; it’s one of my favourite wintery things to do. It’s such a shame that I normally have to travel far and wide but, earlier this year, we had our very own dancing sky right on our doorstep in Eckington. Starling murmurations used to occur regularly over Worcestershire woodlands but as starling numbers continue to fall, the spectacle has disappeared. I know many people who dislike them - at bird tables they’re greedy, quarrelsome and noisy - but in the last 20-30 years the starling population has declined by 10million. At this time of year, however, their numbers are swelled by migrants from Eastern Europe and Russia, which can result in large flocks; in Somerset I’ve watched 5million birds coming in to roost, at Eckington around 10-15,000 or so. Throughout the many flocks I’ve seen, the murmurations have tended to be best when numbers have been around 10,000. Flocking takes place at dusk as birds that have been foraging for grassland invertebrates, and in

your gardens, come together from up to 20 miles away to roost. There’s safety in numbers – predators like peregrine falcons struggle to focus on just one individual - and there’s a strict social hierarchy; youngsters and subordinates will find themselves in the most vulnerable roosting positions. Each bird knows its position relative to the nearest seven birds but we don’t really know why they swirl so much before dropping dramatically to roost; it’s probable that they’re passing information about food resources and ‘shuffling the pack’ to ensure each bird takes its correct place in the roost. And why is it called a ‘murmuration?’ If you’ve ever had the pleasure to be close enough you’ll not only have heard the wing beats but you’ll also have heard the constant murmuring that’s going on as information is passed from bird to bird. The chattering doesn’t finish when they drop into the roost either; it continues as they jostle for a good position. In the morning, the noise gradually gets louder and louder until it finally ceases and the next sound you hear is engine-like as all the wings beat as one and the flock lifts into the air to head out for another day’s feeding.
Starlings are a real favourite of mine and I feel really privileged when they visit my garden – I hope you now do too.

Finding
Family
Solutions Relationship breakdown can be one of the hardest times of our lives. John Sherahilo, Resolution accredited specialist, Mediator and Collaborative lawyer describes the helps you can get with the process of reshaping your family.
I
that the process itself does not prevent you from co-operating on what is best for your children. A constructive approach will lay the best foundations for your children to feel settled with their new family situation. Families come in all shapes and sizes and there are no magic answers. You know your children best, so you will be best able to consider the effects of your breakup on them and together find a solution that works for all of you. Agreements reached together by parents are more likely to work in the long term and be respected by the wider family.
Different methods of dispute resolution are an important tool to achieve continuing communication, cooperation and lasting workable agreements. The more methods of dispute resolution available the better chance there is to explore the options for workable family solutions. Myself and my colleague Chrys Wall are specially trained and experienced in helping families find solutions that will work for them. If you need help with your family situation please get in touch. We will help you take the first steps into a settled future.
f you are thinking about divorce or separation, one of your biggest worries is likely to be about your children; where they will live and how they will continue to have a meaningful relationship with both of you. The information contained within is easily accessible elsewhere and is entirely optional to include in the disc. Do not include anything you feel uncomfortable sharing. What if there are multiple drivers? Consider printing several discs to store in the vehicle and include passport photos or descriptions for each driver. Why not just use my phone or wallet to hold these details? At the scene of an accident it is difficult to access personal property or overcome Smartphone security to find critical information. The disc displays the same information clearly and prominently. Can I customise this disc for my own service? Yes, contact Dave Wise on 01905 331084 or email david.s.wise@westmercia.pnn. police.uk to obtain a customisable version, however the nationally recognisable format is important to ensure a first responder recognises the disc as a Next Of Kin or medical alert information card.

BEHIND THE SCENES... With Caroline Lawrence from The Roses in Tewkesbury, who this issue sits down for a chat with actress Madeleine Leslay. Maddie, it’s lovely to have you back at The Roses this year. So tell me, what is the appeal of panto for you? Panto is enjoyable because it has it all: a fantastic story with adventure, romance and drama, lots and lots of laughs and brilliant songs to sing and dance to. One of the best bits for me is the audience interaction. It’s just all round good fun really - I’m so lucky to do it as a job! I love panto too - it’s my favourite time of year! I’m curious to know though... how do you keep your enthusiasm going throughout the run? I see firsthand how hard panto is for you both mentally and physically, yet in every performance you appear to be having the time of your lives. What’s the secret? I would be lying if I said that it wasn’t exhausting at times, but the shows are so much fun to be in and the audience’s reactions and smiles really keep us going - I can’t tell you what a buzz it is. Last time you were here the highlight of the show for many (including your envious castmates) was your flight out over the auditorium on your magic carpet in Aladdin. What’s been your favourite part and why?
Oh gosh that’s quite difficult to answer. I loved being a witch in Macbeth but I would genuinely have to say Aladdin! Who wouldn’t love playing a cheeky boy who got to fly on a magic carpet - I was living my dream! You’ve achieved a lot in your career so far, with a C.V. that includes both stage and screen. What does the future hold? My ambition is to be in a televised costume drama and to work with the RSC and the National. It’s also a big dream of mine to work with Stephen Poliakoff as I adore his work. Finally, tell us something we don’t know about you... I am half French. My mother was born in Paris and I grew up bilingual. It is exciting that this year’s panto is set in France... but I promise to stick to English! our Pet, Our Priority is our clinic’s strapline, designed to express what is distinct about Folly Gardens. These four words, simple as they are, act as a constant reminder of the relationship between vet, pet and owner that lies at the centre of our work. Over time, as our practice has grown, we’ve been careful to keep this ideal as our guide. It helps us make our professional decisions and sets the tone for everything we do. Alongside this ideal, our key aim is to promote responsible pet ownership. We believe that a proactive, preventative approach to pet healthcare is far better than treatment when your pet is vulnerable, ill or suffering. We always want to make it easy for you to make the best long term choices for your animal. Recognising that pet care is expensive, we also try to translate our ideals into services that are practical and affordable, such as our Pet Health Plan. Gradually, we have expanded our team, improved our facilities Company Promotion
and broadened our network of links with specialist colleagues. As a result, we now offer a significant amount of educational and supportive services that can contribute to the wellbeing of your pet. Free nurse clinics, diet and nutrition clinics, cat-only clinics, puppy parties and dog behaviour training are all examples of this. We also offer regular talks on issues such as ‘Keeping Chickens’ and ‘Firework Phobia in Dogs.’ This winter, we are pleased to launch our new Pet Advice Service which enables you to access free advice from one of our professionally qualified team on any small animal matter. Maybe you are thinking of buying a puppy or kitten but don’t know where to start? Perhaps you have a query about your pet but are not sure if they need a full veterinary appointment? Just call us on 01684 292244 or 01242 679880 and we’ll be happy to talk it through. Wishing you and your pet well this winter...

A word with...
Dean Elliott Award winning Worcestershire actor Dean Elliott, currently touring in The Simon and Garfunkel Story, on what lies behind his success in musical theatre. So many actors struggle to establish a successful career. What route did you take? I grew up in Worcester then moved to Liverpool where I spent four years training at Sir Paul McCartney’s school, the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. After that, like most of my class, I moved to London, to find work. It started with several of us living in the same house, trying to cobble together enough money for heating. I stayed there for many years before returning to Malvern. 30
When was your big break? It was whilst I was doing Over The Rainbow - The Eva Cassidy Story. I had a week off and it happened to be the week of the Buddy The Musical auditions. Getting the part of Buddy helped me reach the position I am in now, enabling me to establish myself in production as well as performance. There is always an element of being in the right place at the right time.
and now Paul Simon. How do you portray a musical legend? You must be honest to the person. It’s easy to do a pastiche of your hero - pull out their most obvious characteristics, mimic their voice and create something from that but the key is to make it real and true. That’s something that came home to me from meeting Buddy Holly’s family back in 2008. After playing Buddy in the West End about a thousand times I was asked to perform and open the You’ve enjoyed success playing two musical heroes, Buddy Holly show in his hometown Lubbock,
Texas, where I was honoured to meet his wife, his brothers and Peggy Sue and to visit his grave.
how to tell the story? It was when I was playing Buddy and I became interested in Rock n’ Roll questions. One of the great How do you prepare for a part? unanswered ones is about Simon The Simon & Garfunkel Show was and Garfunkel: Were they friends in pre-production for a year and a or did they fall out? With that half. It’s a combination of research angle, the popularity of their and rehearsal - a labour of love. music, so many hits and the fact For example, myself and Jonny they had the biggest selling album Smart, who plays Art Garfunkel, of 1970-72, it seemed like a good read in a biography that one way idea for a show. the pair achieved harmony was to sit closely together and mimic How do you tell the story? each others voices so we thought if Through the music but also via that’s how they did it, it makes costume, huge projection photos sense for us to do it. As trying to recreate his style. I part of the national tour, we’re already knew some songs like returning to Worcester and taking ‘Homeward Bound’ and ‘The it to the West End in February then Boxer’ but it was a joy to sit down to South Africa and Dubai. and work out the complex parts. What personal qualities do you You also wrote and produced need to thrive in the theatre? the show. What made you decide A piece of advice I was given is to
try and learn as many skills as possible. There are so many people looking to break into the theatre and often, it’s the little things that set you apart. The reason I got in to Buddy was that I was originally recruited as the double bass player for The Crickets, then got promoted. I was really an electric bass player but I spent weeks, practising double bass all day, every day until 3am, until I got to a level where I was pretty good. The ability to adapt is so important - in Buddy there were several actors who could play multiple instruments but anything can count - dancing, singing, a card trick, juggling - these skills become your toolbelt. Dean Elliot returns to his home town of Worcester to perform at The Swan Theatre on Thursday 26th February. To find out more and watch a trailer please visit thesimonandgarfunkelstory.com 31

Double Glazed
Greenhouses L&L, in tandem with Nordic Garden Buildings, has launched a new range of thermally efficient UPVc double glazed greenhouses. Director, John Lannen explains the benefits.
34
I
f you are a gardener, it’s unlikely that winter is your favourite season. The chances are that you would rather be outdoors, surrounded by plants, than confined to the house with nothing more to do than leaf through next year’s seed catalogues. If you are a serious gardener, you may already own a greenhouse, or have toyed with the idea of one, but been discouraged by the problems linked to traditional single glazed models made from aluminium or wood. Our new Scanline range which are doubled glazed and built from PVCu address these issues, opening up the possibility of gardening throughout the colder months. They provide a suitable environment to overwinter plants, root cuttings and raise seedlings. They also give you the option of growing tender and exotic plants and produce which would not normally thrive in the U.K. And what better place than a greenhouse to retreat from the world and enjoy a bit of peace? To ensure healthy plant growth, a greenhouse should be warm, light and dry. Traditional models tend towards draughts and damp so historically gardeners have used a range of methods - bubble wrap, white paint, heating, rebeading, ventilation and deep cleaning - to reduce moisture levels and ward off fungal disease. A PVCu double glazed greenhouse eliminates the need for much of this worry. By
“
Fall in love with your greenhouse by installing a thermally efficient UPVc double glazed model
”
applying modern knowledge and technology relating to windows and doors, we can now create a thermally efficient environment which warms up quickly, retains heat well but can be cooled, so maintaining a more constant temperature all year round. Size, location and ventilation are all important for creating good growing conditions. The Scanline range comes in a variety of colours and styles with roofing, heating and flooring options to suit your needs. Standard models are glazed from roof to ground but you can choose a dwarf brick wall which increases solidity and improves insulation. Ideally, your greenhouse will be located in a light, sheltered position away from trees. The closer it is to your house the less expensive it will be to install electricity if you want to add a light, fan or heater. Heating may not be necessary, depending on what you want to grow, but if you do use it you will find that your energy costs are reduced when compared to heating a traditional model. For ventilation, every greenhouse comes with a Bayliss
automatic opener as standard. We recommend that you install at least one roof and two window vents. Designed with safety and security in mind, Scanline greenhouses weigh over 800kg and have multipoint window and door locks. Launched in Europe where they have been tested against extreme weather conditions, they are proven to be sturdy and robust. Whilst comparable in price to timber, they require no annual maintenance. Installation is quick and simple as long as it is onto a solid base of treated timber or bricks, intended to last as long as your greenhouse. To find out more please visit our Tewkesbury showroom. Our friendly team are available Monday to Friday 8.30am-5pm and Saturday 9am-1pm. We offer complimentary parking and refreshments and promise no high pressure sales.

From the
BOOKSHELF For the ultimate escape from everyday pressures there’s nothing to beat an hour in the company of a good book. But what to read? This issue, six books that look at different aspects of health and wellbeing.
36
THE EXAMINED LIFE STEPHEN GROSZ
TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE MITCH ALBUM
THE POETRY CURE J. DARLING & C. FULLER
A simple yet potentially life changing book about change and self discovery by a practising psychoanalyst. Stephen Grosz does something magical with his writing, managing to distil 50,000 hours of conversations which have taken place over 25 years into soothing stories about everyday lives which offer profound psychological insight, accessible to all. Which chapter will speak to you most loudly?
An international bestseller, translated into over thirty languages, which chronicles the author’s experience of rekindling a relationship with the college professor who had taught him nearly twenty years previously. Over a period of months, the old man who is now dying, offers his younger pupil one last ‘class’ in how to live. A story to remind you of a teacher or mentor who has inspired you.
The ultimate anthology to comfort anyone suffering loss, distress or pain. Inspired by the power of poetry and a recognition that many people find themselves turning to it in times of illness, the editors brought together a set of poems which look at different aspects of the experience. They provide fresh language, images and metaphors to express the inexpressible, helping us make sense out of chaos and move towards understanding.
COMPLICATIONS ATUL GAWANDE
ANTI CANCER DR. D. SERVAN-SCHREIBER
RELATIVE STRANGER MARY LOUDON
Gripping, honest, well written accounts of real life surgery which read like a thriller. A surgeon, also trained in philosophy, examines what it is to be a human being responsible for the life of another. What does it actually feel like to put a knife through flesh? What should happen when we find ourselves up against the limits of science? Thoughtful, dramatic and at times alarming, this book lays bare some uncomfortable truths about the complexity of medicine as an imperfect science.
A positive, best selling source book written by a clinical professor of psychiatry who was committed to integrated medicine and lived with cancer himself. This book works as a resource whether you are dealing with illness or simply anxious to avoid it. The author brings together a wealth of research relating to food, the environment and psychological issues, making suggestions for lifestyle choices which can boost our body’s natural capacity to protect and heal.
A deeply personal and compelling tale of the author’s search for her late sister, whom she had not seen for twelve years. Beautifully and imaginatively written, it represents a study of the devastating effects that schizophrenia can have upon a person and their family. It also describes the external and internal journey made by the author in an attempt to understand her sister’s life and the personal responsibility she had towards her. A fascinating contribution towards the current debate on mental health.

groups knowing that their loved one is being well cared for. St. Richard's aims to match the right volunteer to the right patient so that everyone gains maximum benefit from the arrangement. Iris, a long standing volunteer likes to help families complete jobs that will make a real difference to their everyday lives. One patient was worried about leaving her huge collection of books for her family to sort out after her death, but didn't feel able to tackle the challenge herself. Iris helped her to sort the books into different piles - to give to family members or friends, or to take to the charity shop. She explained what volunteering means to her; "I am extending my horizons by
meeting new people, clients, other St Richard's volunteers and staff. It means having the opportunity to use skills I developed in my working life and being able to learn new skills. It means hoping to make a difference, for the better, in the community where I live." All volunteers attend an induction course to learn about St Richard's Hospice and receive ongoing training and support. If you have a few hours to spare each week and want to offer something positive then please discuss what St Richard's could offer you by contacting the Volunteer Services Coordinator on 01905 763963, or visit www.strichards.org.uk/ volunteer.
St Richard's Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and supports their families. Patients are cared for in Day Hospice, the 17-bed In-patient Unit or in their own homes by a specialist professional team and many trained volunteers. St Richard’s Hospice is located just off the M5 J7 at Wildwood Drive, Worcester WR5 2QT.

Headteacher, Mrs Helen Wood. Teaching Schools focus on training the next generation of classroom teachers, particularly in shortage subjects such as Maths and Science. They can also, through the School Experience Programme (along with other schools) provide a few days’ work shadowing experience for people who are considering training as teachers. Just as importantly, Teaching School alliances are committed to sharing their expertise and the best practice of outstanding and experienced teachers with colleagues, both within their own schools, and further afield. In this way, Specialist Leaders of Education will not only impart their knowledge and passion for their subject to their fellow teachers, but serve indirectly to inspire, motivate and enhance the exam results of hundreds of school children.

Life in the Village on twitter Our four magazines, The Bredon, Avon & Severn, Folly View and Cotswold Edge Directories, offer you a slice of country life. Plus, there's another way to keep in touch. Connecting you - one year on…
W
hen we launched Life in the Village on twitter just over a year ago, our aim was to become a kind of community megaphone - to share events, ideas and information relating to country living, locally. Free, accessible 24/7 and operating in real time, twitter is an electronic tool that complements our magazines. The 140 character limit requires us all to think before we tweet, encouraging photography and other creative content. In the last twelve months our account has grown significantly and we are grateful to everyone who has supported us. The Life in the Village concept has been embraced by many and with over 2000 of us now interacting daily, twitter has proved to be the ideal way to exchange news, share ideas and connect with interesting people. An increasing number of local businesses and non-profit organisations have been signing up each week. By following back and retweeting anything

of relevance, we support them and provide a hub for local country living, all in one place. If you are involved with a local company or organisation you will often find us networking on a Monday night from 8-9pm. Please join us by following @WorcesterHour, and adding #WorcestershireHour to your tweets. Social media represents a new form of communication but if you like to pursue more traditional pastimes such as nature and wildlife, gardening, cookery, art or photography you will find it a rich and satisfying resource. If you haven’t made the leap yet, take a look - we’ll be pleased to have you join us. Find us at www.twitter.com/@LisaLambon.
