How a team of local men built the

Cotswold Stone Wall at Gloucester Services If you have visited the new service station at J12, M5 you will have noticed the impressive dry stone walling built by Winchcombe based family firm, Alderwood Construction. We asked father and son Stephen and Craig Siller, the driving force behind the company, how they went about it. This is a magnificent Cotswold stone feature. Tell us about it. It represents 1400m2 of dry stone walling, built on four different elevations. The building was designed to appear as if it’s built into the land so from a distance it looks like a hillock. The wall is an integral part of that design. At its highest point it reaches over four metres and the majority of it gently tapers up to meet the grass covered roof. It was laid almost as a traditional dry stone wall but

mortared at the back to provide its fixing point. The hundreds of tonnes of stone required was quarried by Cotswold Stone Quarries from their Tinkers Barn Quarry near Stow on the Wold, a seam of stone which produces warm golden tones. How did you get involved? We tendered along with several other companies and were chosen because of our specialism and experience in working with stone.

There are probably only six or seven stone laying teams locally who are sufficiently skilled and equipped to take on a project like this. Our craftsmanship and the long term relationships we have with local tradesmen means we can ensure a reliable standard of work, as we were able to demonstrate during this project. How did the project go? We ran a team of six drystone wallers who worked full time

from September to March and it went smoothly and was completed on schedule. One of the interesting aspects of Gloucester Services is that it aims to innovate in its industry by championing its locality, through the homemade food served in its cafés, its farm shops and its community involvement. A key feature is its charity arm which works with disadvantaged local communities. As a result, we were assisted by two prisoners from HMP Leyhill who had been trained in drystone walling as part of their rehabilitation. What about domestic projects? Although this was a commercial undertaking and the results are so

impressive visually, managing it was exactly the same as handling a home extension or new build. Our focus is on creating an honest and balanced working relationship to build projects which are well built and leave a lasting good impression.

Grass Snake Swimming taken at Lower Smite Farm, Worcester: Wendy Carter

Ever spotted a snake locally? Wendy Carter of WWT offers some tips .

I Grass Snake Phil Thomas

Grass Snakes Rosemary Winnall

could hardly believe my eyes last summer when I was walking along the Avon near Eckington and saw a grass snake swim across the river. I knew they could swim but hadn’t reckoned on one beating the current and crossing without drifting downstream. Despite being the UK’s largest reptile, these wary speedsters can be difficult to spot. Females grow well over a metre long which makes them easy to separate from the much rarer adders (mainly seen in the north of our county). Grass snakes have a rather obvious greeny-yellow collar around their neck and are olive green with black bars down their flanks (they lack the adder’s distinctive zigzag pattern). Grass snakes are great swimmers – they can stay submerged for up

to 30 minutes - and hunt frogs, toads and fish; they’ll sometimes take small mammals and birds if the mood takes. You may also spot them basking on your compost (or manure) heap; these fabulously warm places are perfect for laying eggs in. In our wildlife garden at Lower Smite Farm last July we were delighted to discover a clutch of eggs. We quickly re-covered them but it was an important lesson in not turning the compost at a critical time of year for snakes! Depending on the temperature, their eggs take around six to eight weeks to hatch. Grass snakes are harmless to humans and will only show aggression if they are cornered. As with all wildlife it’s best to leave them alone and simply admire their speed and agility as they disappear into the distance.

Pet Talk How To Get a FREE Flea Check Folly Gardens Vets, Tewkesbury and Bishops Cleeve is supporting The Big Flea Guarantee. which enables you to get a FREE flea check for your dog. Vet Jo Mansfield explains more. f you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to need to have your home fumigated, you will be one of the few pet owners who never forgets to apply flea treatment. It’s not a pleasant subject, but fleas breed so quickly that a flea infestation is something that you will always remember. Every summer, as soon as the sun comes out, we see an increase in the number of pets brought in with fleas, ticks and lice. It’s not surprising when you consider that in 21 days one flea can become a thousand; a single female flea can produce up to 1,500 eggs a month and adult fleas can survive on your pet for up to 113 days. With climate change bringing milder, wetter winters and warm, dry summers, it’s harder than ever to keep our pets and homes flea and tick free. Plus, most of us lead such busy lives that remembering exactly when flea treatment is due is easy to overlook. One of the key advantages of joining Folly Gardens Pet Health Plan is that you will receive free, regular flea treatment reminders and the appropriate advice and products. Many people only realise that that their pet may have fleas when they see frantic scratching,

I

itching and licking or worse, find a bite on their own arm or leg. Surveys show that even those of us who are committed to regular flea prevention fail to protect our pets adequately by not using the right treatment or not applying it frequently enough. Scientific advances have brought innovative solutions to the control of parasites but the most effective products can only be prescribed by qualified vets. Options include spot-ons, sprays, collars and tablets with spot-ons typically applied every four weeks and new, chewable tablets only required every 12 weeks. Help is on offer this summer as the team at Folly Gardens clinic is supporting the Big Flea Guarantee. Under this scheme, your dog can receive a FREE Flea and tick check together with a consultation on the best flea and tick treatment available. Just go to www.mypetonline.co.uk to download a voucher then contact us on 01684 292244 or 01242 679880 to book an appointment, making our receptionist aware of the offer. Bring the voucher along to your appointment and it will be accepted as full payment. Wishing you and your pet well this summer,

Taking care of your Will Life is full of unexpected events and none of us can be sure what the future holds so planning for every eventuality makes good sense. Lawyer Chris James offers his advice. Why should I make a Will? Making a Will is part of the process of sound financial planning for us all, not just the elderly or ill. With a Will in place, you can be certain that your wishes will be carried out after your death. It protects against legal problems arising for your family in the future, helps prevent arguments over belongings and enables you to make personal gifts to relatives, friends and charities who wouldn’t otherwise benefit. What happens if I don’t make a Will? People often assume that their money and possessions will automatically pass to their partners or children, but if you die intestate this isn’t always the case. For example, the law does not automatically recognise partners as having the same rights as spouses or civil partners, so if you are

not married to your partner, even if you have lived together for many years, they may be left with nothing if you have not taken care of the legalities. If you have young children or dependents there could be a great deal of uncertainty about who will look after them or provide financially if you die without a Will. If you are in a second marriage, executing a Will gives you the opportunity to review all your assets to ensure that you leave what you wish to your current spouse or partner and take care of your children from any previous relationships.

Why choose QualitySolicitors Thomson & Bancks? Our lawyers have in-depth knowledge in all areas of Wills. Don’t worry if you’ve never discussed a Will before; our friendly team will put you at ease, explaining it all clearly, with no legal jargon. We offer free first advice so you can have an initial chat without obligation. With our same day response and no hidden costs promises, we make the process straightforward. To find out more contact your nearest office today and we’ll arrange for you to have a free, initial chat with one of our specialist team.

Let’s talk...

KNEE SURGERY With over 90,000 knees replaced in 2012/13 the rate of replacement is increasing. Haminder Gosal, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital, explains what is involved. Why are knee joints replaced? The main reason is osteoarthritis (OA) which creates joint pain, stiffness and limits mobility. Sophisticated Summerhouses

Expert advice on new stand alone glass garden buildings from L&L

A Pavilion in white with a polycarbonate roof and laminate flooring, styled as a summerhouse with space for dining

L&L, in tandem with established Welsh supplier, Nordic Garden Buildings, have launched a brand new range of stand alone glass buildings, ideal for use as a summerhouse. Director, John Lannen explains more.

A

lmost all of us love spending a summer evening in the garden with a glass of wine in hand. Yet too often, in our climate, we find ourselves frustrated that the warmth of the day has faded too soon. We’ll fetch a jumper, perhaps huddle around a chimenea, then eventually give up and retreat indoors. Our new

range of glass garden buildings changes all that, giving you the chance to enjoy your garden more frequently, and later into the evening, than you could if you simply sat outside. The notion of a summerhouse is nothing new but what is new is our ability to build them in a range of styles and sizes, using modern, thermally efficient glass.

Company Promotion

Offering panoramic views of your garden, permanence and longevity, a glass summerhouse gives you a more sophisticated environment in which to relax than one made of timber. A glazed structure also provides a number of practical advantages. The cost of timber is constantly rising so, surprisingly, glass is now often comparable in price. A glass/PVCu structure is also stronger, more permanent and far more secure than one made of wood. Nordic Garden Buildings are manufactured by a Welsh company that has been manufacturing products from PVCu for 40 years. Their range of garden buildings was launched in Europe where they have been tested against weather conditions much more extreme than here, and proven to be robust. Each one comes complete with multipoint door and window locks, and a guarantee. And unlike timber structures, they need no annual maintenance. A glass building enables you to spend more time in your garden, whatever the season. With six

Created for You! Wide range of sizes, colours, styles, roofing, heating and flooring available

Bring style to your garden with six colour options budget. With careful decoration, inside and out, you can create a unique personal space to sit and read, relax with a drink or share a meal with friends. But how do you go about maintaining a comfortable temperature, all year round? Insulation, automatic air vents, roof vents, windows and air conditioning can all help. Heating can be added via a simple electric fan heater, under floor heating or even a wood burning stove. Installation onto an existing patio or deck is easy and will take our skilled team only one or two days. This means that your garden building is also portable; you won’t even have to part with it if you move house. Our new Nordic Garden Buildings display area is expanding; look out for details of our Open Day this summer. To find out more please visit our Tewkesbury showroom at Red Lane, alongside the river. HATS

FOR HIRE

Any Occasion Dee Andrews’ lifelong interest in fashion has inspired her to set up a new hat hire business from her home in Wickhamford, near Evesham. We asked her advice on how to choose a hat. I don’t wear a hat very often; how do I find one to complement my outfit? A lot of women worry they can’t wear hats, but you can as long as it’s suited to your face shape, your outfit and your personality. I’ve sourced a wide selection of hats and fascinators from various suppliers and can help you choose something flattering. Some, like ‘perchers’ which are simply mounted on combs or thin hair bands, are particularly popular as they don’t interfere with your hairstyle. How does the process of hiring a hat work? Just book an appointment to come along and find a hat you like. Some women have a clear idea of what they want, while others want advice and someone who can tell them what looks good. To get the best overall impression, I advise that you bring along the outfit you intend to wear. When you arrive, I usually ask if you’ve worn a hat before and if you have any ideas about what you’d like. Some women have a strong preference for style or colour but if not, I will suggest some options. I’ve created a lovely spacious studio and put together a really special collection so there is something appropriate for everyone. I started the business because there are very few places selling

68th Great Comberton Flower Show Brailes Orchard, Great Comberton, Pershore WR10 3DT 2-5pm Saturday 23rd August 2014

Cups & Prizes for Home Grown Produce! Entry form on website

The Great Comberton Show was first held in 1946 with the objective of helping to purchase the school, now the Village Hall, from the Ministry of Education. Held annually since (with just one cancellation in 1967) this traditional show thrives. In the morning entries for the produce are judged and cups awarded then the fete opens at 2pm. Chair Suzanne Hamilton explains.

T

his year, the 68th Fruit and Flower show will be held in the idyllic setting of Great Comberton’s Brailles Orchard, overlooked by Bredon Hill and our lovely church. The central piece of this traditional show is the historic marquee with classes for wine, fruit, vegetables, art and crafts, cookery and children, all fiercely competed for. There is always some friendly banter about whose marrow is the biggest! Classes are

open to all and it’s great fun to get involved. Surrounding the marquee are a great selection of traditional village and quality crafts stalls plus fun games and activities. These range from our famous egg throwing, plank plodding and novelty dog show to the Google treasure hunt. New this year we also have a friendly Punch and Judy show. If you have a classic car then please bring it and enter it for “the car our judge would

most like to take home”. There will be plenty of refreshments available during the afternoon including village WI teas, a BBQ, ice creams and the friendly bar which is legendary. The end of the afternoon sees the Award of the Cups and auction of prize winning exhibits. We are proud to be one of the longest running village and produce shows, well supported by local families. Please do come along and join us.

a new model will be much more reliable and efficient. With 30 year experience in the heating industry, long standing relationships with manufacturers and a settled in-house team, we have a huge amount of expertise to offer.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Nest can be retro-fitted to almost any boiler. As Nest Certified Professionals we will ensure that your unit is installed in a suitable place, attach the Heat Link, and start setup. Nest should be located in a room you use regularly although there is the option of multiple thermostats to create the ideal temperature in different zones of your property. Programming traditional controls can be complicated and irritating but the Nest Thermostat programs itself. Once installed, it automatically activates the best features for your system and starts learning about you and your home. Turn it up and turn it down manually for a week and soon it will understand your habits and build a personalised schedule. To find out more call us on 01684 210612 and request a FREE home survey.

our agent has been instructed, your particulars have been circulated and now, you are ready to accept viewings on your property. So how do you ensure that you make the most of every opportunity to sell? Our advice is:  Ask your agent to accompany viewings whenever possible; they, after all, are the professionals who have been trained to carry out viewings in a particular way.  Ensure your agent is aware of ‘the best bits’ about your property so that this information can be passed on to the viewers.  Make sure the property is clean and tidy with the entrance clear of any clutter like boots and shoes.  Keep pets out of the way and pet odours to a minimum by keeping the property well ventilated.  Leave internal doors open to allow a feeling of space. If the viewing is taking place in the evening then leave the lights on.  If any recent works have been carried out ensure your agent is

aware of them and have the associated documentation available for viewers to see if requested.  Highlight any particularly good features of the area such as local clubs, amenities and beauty spots. Viewers will also be interested to hear about great neighbours.  If you’re required to carry out a viewing yourself, always let the prospective purchaser enter each room before you so that they have a clear view of it. Save the best room until last so that they leave the property with the ‘wow’ factor in mind. Never ask for an offer; leave that to your agent.  Be open to feedback and try to take any comments on board. Don’t take negative comments personally but address any obstacles to sale where possible. If you’d like help with buying, selling or letting please call our friendly team on 01386 761241.

“Many thanks for your excellent workmanship. Everyone we have spoken to from Buzz Electrical have been very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.”

Energy Saving Lighting

First For Safety

The team at Buzz are seeing more householders moving towards Energy Saving Lighting. MD Steve Owens explains the benefits.

R

apid changes in technology mean that LED lighting has now become much more affordable, giving you the chance to modernise your home, dramatically reduce your energy use and save money in the following ways:  LED replacements for conventional filament or halogen lamps can be easily obtained and installed in your existing light fittings, reducing your bills.  Modern recessed down lights, suitable for all rooms including kitchens and bathrooms, can be replaced (or specified new) with built in LED lamps and control gear. A 6 watt LED lamp is equivalent to a 50 watt halogen bulb, costing around just £1.50 energy usage per year per lamp. This gives an 87% energy saving against halogen. LED lamps also

have a 35,000hrs average life compared to 3,000hrs for a 50 watt halogen lamp. Available in warm or cool white, down lights give out minimum heat and are dimmable with a leading edge dimmer. Some manufacturers also include five or ten year warranties.  External halogen floodlights, suitable for all kinds of outside winter lighting schemes, can be replaced with a wide range of LED floodlights, with or without PIR (passive infra red) sensors.  Garden lighting schemes using LED lamps have less energy loads meaning you can use smaller cables and infra-red or app based controls which you operate remotely from your mobile phone. It’s the way forward; the future has arrived! For more hints and tips visit www.facebook.com/buzzelectrical

Buzz recommends an Electrical Installation Condition Test & Report every 5-10 years for all domestic properties (excluding lettings). If you have an electrical fire most insurance companies will insist on a current satisfactory EICR report in place to British standards guidelines BS7671. Check your endorsements section of your home policies for specifics relating to the electrical specifications as this could affect any settlement on a buildings or contents claim.

Can you topple Folly Gardens Vets as ‘Head of the River?’ Entry is just £20 for a crew of eight!

BREDON BOAT RACES

Love the river? In a local club? Why not put together a team for the annual bell boating races on the Avon this summer.

T

he Annual Bredon Boat Races will take place on Saturday September 6th from 12noon to 4.30pm. Come along for an afternoon of excitement, adrenalin and fun; watch the racing, take refreshments from the cider or tea tents and have a go at the bottle stall. The kids can play games and try to win a Jolly Jam Jar and there’s no need to worry about food as a barbeque with delicious locally sourced burgers and hot dogs will be on offer. The hugely popular ReVIVals will entertain us during the afternoon. All funds raised will go towards the upkeep of the historic St Giles Church in

Bredon. The stone work around the big West Door, used by bridal couples, is crumbling and the repairs will cost thousands, so every penny generated will help. Teams of eight are invited to apply in two categories; adult and under 14’s. If you’d like to take part why not set yourself up as Captain and recruit a crew of seven others to represent your pub, club, or workplace? Entry is just £20 per team. To make the event more entertaining, fancy dress and fun facts about team members are encouraged for use by the announcer on the day. To book your place please call or email Amanda Bath for an entry form 01684 772237.

ROGUE traders

West Mercia police offer their advice.

W

orcestershire Regulatory Services (Trading Standards) and local police officers have been working together across the county clamping down on rogue traders who are targeting local residents. Rogue traders are criminals. They often appear in the guise of professional tradesmen, using printed leaflets and well maintained vehicles to fool consumers. Criminal activities carried out can include fraud, charging high prices for poor workmanship or work that is not even carried out. There are also known links between burglary and rogue trader activity. As this type of crime happens at the homes of consumers, it is often known as doorstep crime. Criminals concerned are known to actively target and seek out vulnerable members of our community. The Worcestershire rogue trader response team attends incidents within the county when it is believed a rogue trader is targeting local residents. Apprehending criminals and disrupting their activities is the objective of the team and acts as a forceful deterrent to criminals, sending out a clear message that we will act and use the legal powers at our disposal. When a contract is agreed in a consumer’s home a written cancellation notice must be provided

detailing a seven day cooling off period. If a cancellation notice is provided a trader cannot start work until the seven days expire, unless written permission is provided by the householder. This cooling off period is designed to allow the consumer breathing space and a chance to change their mind. If these cancellation rights are ignored by the trader an offence will be committed and the trader will not be able to legally make you pay for any work provided. Worcestershire has developed an "early warning" system that alerts residents to rogue trader activity in the county. Information is passed via Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators and parish councils so that residents can be on their guard. The number of recorded incidents involving doorstep crime in Worcestershire is low. This may be because the majority of victims are elderly or vulnerable people who are worried about reporting crime. Some people are also embarrassed that they have been conned or fear reprisals. It is vitally important that all incidents of this type are reported, however insignificant they may seem. If you think rogues are targeting your area then contact Regulatory Services or the Police. Regulatory Services can also provide "no cold calling cards" a card you can display on your door to deter cold callers. If you need tradesmen don’t rely on door to door callers, always get further quotes and use the Worcestershire Trader Register, a register of local tradesmen. Worcestershire Trader Register: 01905 765394 www.worcestershire.gov.uk/traderregister To report an incident contact Regulatory Services via Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 or visit www.worcestershire.gov.uk/tradingstandards If you have any information or concerns you can raise them by contacting your Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101 or dial 999 in an emergency. You can also call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 to report information anonymously.

Counts Where caring really

Volunteer Complementary Therapists are needed to enhance the care offered to patients at St Richard’s Hospice. Moo Barrie, Complementary Therapy Coordinater explains more.

A

relaxing aromatherapy massage or a reflexology treatment can make a big difference to the well-being of patients at St Richard's Hospice but we need more volunteer complementary therapists to meet demand. A team of nine volunteer therapists and two part-time paid staff currently offer a range of treatments including reflexology, Indian head massage, Reiki, Shiatsu, relaxation and visualization techniques, among others. We are hoping to encourage more qualified therapists to come forward and join our team. Patients who attend the Day Hospice, those being cared for in the In-patient Unit (IPU) or who usually see a specialist St Richard's nurse in their own homes, as well as bereaved relatives, come into the Wildwood Drive centre in Worcester for treatments. In March alone the Complementary Therapy team gave 29 treatments to Day Hospice patients, 26 to outpatients, seven to IPU patients, four to carers and saw five new referrals. Patients have often had no

experience of complementary therapies for therapeutic reasons. They might have had a pampering session in a spa but the service we offer is a little different. The treatments are very relaxing and help patients to cope with their illness and body image. They really appreciate the difference it can make to their well-being. Patients are usually offered a course of six treatments and can ask to be re-referred but such is the demand there may be a waiting list. We would love to expand the service even further in the future, but to do so, we need additional complementary therapists to volunteer their help. Volunteer complementary therapists need to be members of their appropriate professional body, be fully insured and have three to five years practical experience. We ask that you commit to work at least one session fortnightly either: 9.30 1.30 / 1.30 - 5.30 / or an evening. In the last year complementary therapists volunteered 923 hours in patient care. Stella Reeve from Hallow started as a volunteer here in 2005 and currently volunteers one morning a week. "I had never worked in this environment before and was very

apprehensive but I quickly realised that I need not have worried! I soon got to know the other volunteer therapists and joined in the regular meetings for information and support. I knew all the benefits of my therapy but I was amazed at the difference it made to the patients. If they're new to aromatherapy and massage, patients are also pleasantly surprised by how much better they feel - not only does it relax them and take their minds off their illness and treatments but it also helps them cope with the side effects afterwards. The patients say it is wonderful to have something to look forward to. Of course, there are benefits for me too as I know that I am doing something so worthwhile. There is a real 'feel good factor' from volunteering and knowing that my skills can make such a difference. It is also so beneficial to be part of the whole team at St Richard's and to have opportunities for my own learning and development as a therapist." Deborah Cook, from Worcester is a qualified reflexologist and has volunteered here for the last ten years. “When faced with a life threatening disease, as a patient, relative or carer, the

power of touch is immeasurable. I have met some amazing people, who have shared their precious time with me and hopefully I have been able to bring them some comfort, distraction and relaxation with the reflexology." Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact Volunteer Services at St Richard's Hospice on 01905 763963 or fill in the application form online at the address below. St Richard's Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with cancer and

other life-threatening illnesses and supports their families. Each year the hospice team supports over 2,400 patients and family members in Worcestershire. Patients are cared for in Day Hospice, the 17-bed In-patient Unit or in their own homes by a specialist professional team as well as many trained volunteers. In the In-patient Unit specialist staff are on hand 24 hours a day to manage patients' symptoms and where, if they so choose, patients may spend the last few days of life in comfort and dignity. St Richard's is an

BIOMASS Do you lack a mains gas supply? Ben Bowers & Brad Maber are accredited installers of Biomass Heating, a renewable alternative to LPG or Oil. We found out more. What is Biomass? Biomass is a readily available wood based fuel supplied in the form of pellets, logs or wood chip, which offers a cost effective form of heating for off-gas customers who are currently running on oil or LPG. It’s one of the technologies backed by the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. What is the RHI? It’s a

government financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat. Switching to heating systems that use naturally replenished energy can help the UK reduce its carbon emissions. People who join the scheme and stick to its rules, receive quarterly payments for seven years for the amount of clean, green renewable heat their system produces. Installing this technology means you can reduce your running costs and your carbon emissions plus get significant financial rewards.

Does it apply to businesses? Yes, the RHI has two schemes, Domestic and Non-Domestic, with separate tariffs, joining conditions, rules and application processes. We can help you by assessing the suitability of your property with a free, no obligation survey. As well as the unique service of biomass we offer a wood burning stove supply and installation service with stoves from Termatech and Firebelly.

School trips enable learning to happen way beyond the confines of the classroom, sometimes providing an opportunity to provide an essential social, moral and cultural dimension to a subject. A perfect example is the recent visit to Auschwitz by some of our sixth form students, which is featured on our website: www.princehenrys.co.uk. In summary, the educational benefits of school trips are multi dimensional, providing pupils with exciting learning opportunities combined with hands on activities. In an age when children can spend far too much time on electronic devices, school trips provide traditional, engaging activities which enable participants to experience new situations and broaden their horizons. Long may they continue.

Parking for an enormous number of cars is available in the parkland adjacent to the ground. It’s a great place to meet up with friends and this year promises to be better as good as ever. Set in picturesque parkland, surrounded by magnificent trees in our tranquil, welcoming village, the fete offers a fantastic afternoon for all the family. You better arrive on time if you want the chance of winning a prize at the notorious bottle stall, or get the best pickings from a range of books, food and bric-a-brac.
