Hello... …and welcome to the spring issue. This is my favourite season, the time when our villages look their best. We’re so lucky in this area to be surrounded by beautiful countryside. Whatever you’re struggling with in your life, it’s almost impossible to live without hope and wonder as the world once again turns green. This spring, despite the challenges of the floods, the local economy feels more buoyant than it has done for a while. A wide range of local companies are reporting an upturn in trade and it’s great to hear of significant new local events planned for the summer. This growth has been reflected in our experience too; a busy start to the new year means our four magazines continue to expand. This edition, we introduce you to several new local companies offering services which we believe have something of value to add to your life. One of the things I like most about my work is picking up the phone and discovering somebody I wasn’t aware of offering a great service locally. I’m inspired by the range of interesting people giving their energy to worthwhile projects and never more so than since we launched Life in the Village on twitter. Thanks to all of you who support in print and via social media. We appreciate all your feedback and try to take it forward to ensure that our magazines and tweets are useful to you. Until next time,
Lisa Editor Lisa Lambon

How To Create Traditional Cotswold Style Old English garden design remains popular locally but even in an historically significant home it’s important to create a garden that is personal and unique to you. Here, Jonathan Siarl (pictured) designer exclusively for Rune, explains how.
T
he photographs opposite depict the results of a typical local project for Rune. Our clients had moved to an historic house in a Cotswold Conservation Area. Having renovated the interior, they were keen to upgrade the garden, making it functional and beautiful. What existed was the bones of a traditional Cotswold garden but the terrace and dry stone walls were collapsing, the borders had been neglected, and the entire plot was overrun with ground elder. Traditional old English garden design, appropriate to such historic architecture, relies on straight lines and traditional cottage planting. Respecting this and taking inspiration from the house and surroundings, we recreated a traditional Cotswold design to the front of the property which was laid with flagstones and gravel then planted with yew hedges, topiary and an abundance of lavender. This style was continued through to the back but there
we felt more inclined to personalise the garden, giving it a contemporary edge by using materials which linked to the newly renovated interior. In order to increase the sense of space, the rear was split into three main areas. First was a rectangular terraced lawn, accessed by generous Cotswold stone steps and surrounded by pleached lime, box balls and cottage style borders. Second was a dining area with travertine tiles and a herb topiary. Third was the area immediately outside the house where a patio was softened with relaxed planting and a wooden Lutyens style bench. Black limestone was chosen to reflect a black granite

work surface in the kitchen. This had the effect of tricking the eye and expanding the kitchen outwards, so giving the illusion of space and ensuring a seamless connection between the house and the garden. In order for any garden to flow, it must have a strong design. The soft landscaping should relate to the hard areas, the house, and its environment. It’s this that we consider our speciality at Rune. Another characteristic of our style is full, lush plantings which will give an instant result but continue to mature and evolve over time. Our process starts with a free consultation during which we visit you at home. We create all styles of garden for clients with plots of five metres square upwards and can manage all levels of budget. To see more examples of our work please visit our website where there are case studies and a selection of testimonials. To book your FREE Design Consultation with Rune please call 01905 841 405.

How to...
TRAVEL in comfort
Do you dread the hassle of getting to the airport? Would you love the luxury of being driven to a special event? When Tewkesbury based Mike Gibson was made redundant after 25 years in the travel industry he decided to combine two of his favourite things: driving and meeting people. One year on, MG Executive Travel is thriving. We talked to him and found out more.
WHY USE A DRIVER? Certain events like an important meeting or funeral involve a degree of emotional strain which is increased by the worry of having to drive and then find somewhere to park. Using a chauffeur removes all that stress, enabling you to arrive at your destination relaxed and in the appropriate frame of mind. Having driven around the country in a sales role for many years, I know the UK road network well. My car, a Mercedes Benz E Class, with luxury leather seats, is always well maintained and immaculate. If you want to be assured of my reliability you can check my references on the website and follow my journeys on twitter. My fees remain competitive. Weigh up, for
20% off example, my airport transfer rates against long term parking charges and you might be surprised.

“
The perfect airport transfer service! On time every time, immaculate Mercedes, excellent driver. I thoroughly recommend ... his excellent service.
“
WHO USES YOUR SERVICES? I specialise in providing a first class, long distance travel service. It’s used by all kinds of people who want to dispense with the stress of driving but appreciate comfort and reliability. That means lots of corporate professionals who want to maximise their time so that they can focus on their work but also private individuals, especially older people. All my clients want the same thing; a reliable driver who can be trusted to escort them to their destination on time, safely, and with the minimum of fuss.

Pet Talk Looking After Your Dog, Responsibly
Ask me about the Folly Gardens Pet Health Plan
U
nfortunately, the unsavoury subject of dog fouling remains a major issue, both nationally and locally. It’s the most offensive type of litter on our streets and is consistently raised as a public concern. It’s not only that dog mess is unpleasant to see, smell or tread in. It is also revolting to have to clean it from skin, clothing, toys or footwear, especially those of our children. Dog mess carries diseases that can affect other dogs, cause serious harm to livestock and are dangerous to humans. Take your pick; Campylobacter, Giardia, Neospora, Heart worms, Whip worms, Hook worms, Round worms, Corona virus, Salmonellaa, Coccidia, Cryptosporidia and Neospora are all waiting for us, quite literally around the next corner. The biggest threat to public health from dog excrement is Toxocariasis, an infection of the roundworm Toxocara Canis. The eggs of the parasite can be found in soil or sand contaminated with faeces and if swallowed, result in infection that lasts between six and 24 months. Symptoms include eye
Expert Advice on responsible pet ownership from Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens, Tewkesbury and Bishops Cleeve.
disorders, vague aches, dizziness, nausea, asthma and, in rare cases, seizures or fits. Often the eggs are ingested when passed to the mouth by the hands, but this can also occur through contact with dogs or objects including the wheels of toys and the soles of shoes. Infected soil samples are often found in play areas and as a result, those most affected are children from 18 months to five. In recent months, several areas in our community have become a real problem, for example around Bredon Hancock’s First School in Bredon. Please remember it is the moral and legal responsibility of every dog owner or walker to clear up any mess left by their pet. If you fail to clean up after your dog you can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice, or if the case goes to court, a fine of up to £1,000. The regulations state specifically, that being unaware that the dog has fouled, or not having a suitable means of removing the faeces is not a reasonable excuse. Our villages have dedicated dog waste bins so please, please, pick up your pet’s mess and dispose of it properly. Wishing you and your pet well,
Brad

Condensation
& understanding it Expert advice on internal and external misting and ‘broken down’ units
Modern aids to comfort have created homes which are warmer but often have less ventilation and air changes than in the past. This can create the perfect conditions for condensation. John Lannen, Director at L & L, explains more.
Condensation is a by product of warmer homes
M
ost of us live in houses which are much more comfortable than in the past. Improved building methods and add-on insulation schemes means a lot of properties are now almost completely sealed by a combination of double glazing, cavity wall and loft insulation and draught proofing. Mostly, this is a positive change but it can lead to increased problems with condensation which can form in three areas. It’s a real issue so how can it be resolved? forms here as a result of excessive moisture trapped within the house. It’s created by a range of modern living habits; boiling a kettle, bathing, cooking, washing up, drying laundry, keeping houseplants and even breathing! We can’t stop breathing and we all enjoy a cuppa so in truth, it’s a fine balancing act to create the right environment with the appropriate moisture content for us to feel comfortable in our own home. To reduce condensation you must remove excess moisture by ventilating rooms and you can achieve this without causing draughts or making it cold by: opening a window in each room just a fraction for some part of every day draught proofing internal doors and keeping them closed to prevent moisture migrating from one part of the house to another eg kitchen to lounge fitting inexpensive trickle ventilation to the windows, especially in problem areas like bathrooms and kitchens fitting wall vents

Over the past week or so we had occasion to put your service to the test when our boiler developed an intermittent fault that resulted in it cutting out periodically. I must say that we have been delighted with the way in which the problem was handled. On three occasions an engineer visited within two or three hours of me telephoning. Then, once the fault had been diagnosed, a spare part was ordered and fitted within 24 hours. All this at a time of year when I am sure you must be busy. My telephone calls to your office were dealt with courteously and efficiently. The engineer who visited was pleasant, knowledgeable and remedied the problem with the minimum of fuss. All in all, the level of customer service provided was exemplary and we will not hesitate to recommend the HomePlan to friends and neighbours. Kind Regards, Mr P, Winchcombe, December 2013

Specialists in Cotswold Stone and Period Builds
How To Progress Your Building Project Do you have a project in mind that’s been on hold due to the turbulent economy? Now may be a wise time to move it forward suggest Craig and Stephen Siller, the driving force behind Winchcombe based family firm, Alderwood Construction. We caught up with them. What’s happening in the local building industry now? After a difficult period, the last six months have been more buoyant, mirroring changes in the property market and the wider economy. Like many builders, we’ve experienced an upturn in the level of enquiries from architects and private clients who are ready to move their projects forward. It’s because finance has become a little easier to get hold
of and with interest rates low, borrowing remains relatively inexpensive. However, as many people realise, interest rates won’t stay low forever, materials only ever go up and lead times from builders will only become longer. Now is therefore a good time to invest in your property; just take care to check with an estate agent what value your extension can be expected to add and budget accordingly.
What sort of projects have you been working on this year? Several including a cottage extension, a stone build featuring cedar boarding and a listed granary conversion. Working with stone and on period builds is what we, as a family, have specialised in for three generations. We have spent most of our working lives in the North Cotswolds, completing 30 projects in the last five years.

ast year we at Gusterson Palmer & James saw a remarkable increase in the number of sales agreed from June onwards, compared with 2012. We continually track the local market and overall, our viewing figures for the year increased by 50%. The rise in the number of Sold boards seen by the public increased confidence and this, along with the new building developments in and around Evesham, boosted the number of properties available for sale. So far this year, we have experienced high levels of enquiries for market appraisals and new instructions, both for sales and lettings. This will continue to provide greater choice to home movers over the coming months, encouraging more of us to consider a change
of address. The Directors here, myself and Jon James, have been collectively selling homes for over 40 years. Being independent, experienced and genuinely local means we can respond quickly to a changing market. Presently, we are preparing for continued growth by refurbishing our first floor offices which will allow us room for expansion in both our sales and lettings departments. Our plan will help us ensure that we continue to give our clients the professional and comprehensive service that we are so well known for. Developing Values Dr Tony Evans, Headteacher at Prince Henry’s High School, shares his thoughts.
N
o doubt, many people reading this will have differing opinions about how our children should conduct themselves in schools. There are many negative influences portrayed in the media towards youngsters, sometimes for all the wrong reasons, and some of the questions that parents and friends frequently ask me include: How do you get the best from teenagers? How do schools get their pupils to perform in a positive way? How does OFSTED measure the behaviour of our children in our schools? I will answer these three questions in reverse order.
Children’s attitude in school is important to Ofsted and they actually measure the quality of it! Ofsted use a standard framework to determine the quality of behaviour they see during an inspection. Pupils don’t automatically behave to fit pre-set criteria. However, using their knowledge and experience, the inspectors can determine for themselves whether the attitudes they are seeing overall are outstanding, good, require improvement or are inadequate. So, how do we encourage and promote what Ofsted have deemed to be ‘outstanding’ behaviour from our children in school? As adults, parents and teachers, we endeavour to model our own personal behaviour. If we set out ourselves as adults to be excellent role models, then this rubs off and has an impact upon the children. The behaviour we display as adults is deeply rooted in the values that we have. We all have principles, morals, opinions and attitudes - it’s how we live by them that determine us as individuals.
www.princehenrys.worcs.sch.uk
At Prince Henry’s, rather than promote a long list of rules and regulations (although as in all schools we do have them), we prefer to focus upon the values and beliefs that make us the people that we truly are. In working with the children on a daily basis, these values aren’t just written on our website. They are very much alive and lived out through our assemblies, tutor time, lessons, extra-curricular activities, sporting fixtures, concerts and productions. Over time, by a natural process of osmosis, the children learn how to appreciate their peers and their teachers, take pride in themselves and others, and also be appreciated themselves. This has a positive effect and by developing respect and trust in a continuous cycle, a positive ethos and set of behaviour emerges. This will hopefully last with the children for the rest of their lives, so that they too can instil their values and beliefs into future generations to come.

Domestic Abuse
THE HIDDEN CRIME Are you living in constant fear in your home? Are you afraid of what might happen when your partner walks through the door? For many people this is a daily reality they live with. West Mercia Police, working alongside other agencies, can help .
D
omestic abuse is a serious and complex issue which stems from the abuser's desire for power and control over their partner or wider family. It includes any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between individuals who are, or have been, intimate partners, regardless of gender or sexuality. Domestic abuse also includes incidents between family members, aged 16 and over. (Family members are defined as mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister and grandparents, whether directly related, in-laws or step family) . Abusers can use many tactics to establish and maintain control, such as criticism and verbal
abuse, pressure tactics, harassment, isolation, threats, violence and denial. It’s a crime that remains largely hidden behind closed doors, leaving its victims feeling trapped and afraid to say anything in case it makes a bad situation worse. Experience suggests that friends, families and neighbours are often aware or suspect that something is happening but, for one reason or another, are reluctant to get involved. However, research shows that the level of abuse experienced is likely to increase over time and could even result in murder. Expert help is available, as detailed here.
Getting Help with Domestic Abuse‌ If you or somebody you know needs confidential help or advice call West Mercia Women's Aid domestic abuse helpline on 0800 980 3331 Help is also available from: Mankind Initiative - Supporting male victims of domestic abuse www.mankind.org.uk or 01823 334244 Broken Rainbow - Support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people experiencing domestic violence. www.broken-rainbow.org.uk or 0300 999 5428 Help is available for abusers at www.respect.uk.net or call their helpline on 0845 122 8609. Common Toad: Jason Curtis
Mild wet weather from mid-February onwards can trigger hundreds of toads crossing our roads in one night. Wendy Carter explains.
W Toad spawn: Caroline Livingston
Setting up a toad crossing in Pershore: Jurjen Annen
hen it comes to crossing roads, toads give chickens a run for their money. Or a crawl, to be precise. How toads move is one of the ways you distinguish them from frogs; why hop when you don’t need to? Frogs lay their spawn anywhere watery but toads are a little pickier, preferring wellestablished, deeper and colder bodies of water. That’s why, at this time of year, you may find toads crossing a road near you. Since we’ve been losing ponds at an extraordinary rate, toads now face a longer and more hazardous journey from hibernation grounds to suitable breeding ponds. None of South Worcestershire’s major toad crossings are on our busiest roads but there are numerous villages and lanes that play a crucial role in this mass migration.
You can help. If your garden is big enough you can create a pond suitable for frogs, toads, newts and other wildlife. Or you could don a waterproof and fluorescent jacket, grab a few friends and help the toads cross the roads. You’ll need to find a crossing (see below for advice) and work out which way the toads are heading. The most basic ‘rescue’ is to pick them up, one by one, and pop them safely on the other side. Alternatively, set up a fence and collect the toads in sunken buckets (you’ll need permission). You can then transport them across the road en masse early the following morning. Apart from making sure you’re safe, the only real problem is moving the fences to the other side of the road once the toads have laid their spawn and turned around, shortly afterwards!
