…to our May/June issue. With Spring delayed by more than a month, this Winter has been the longest many of us can remember. Yet judging by the contents of this Directory and the number of new ventures being launched, many of you have been far from hibernating. We’ve been busy too. Taking local events as our theme, we bring details of several great days out for you and your family. In addition to our new regular competition, we’re launching our Readers’ Photo Gallery. With so many fabulous photo opportunities around Bredon Hill and beyond, we invite you to share your best local images with us. In association with Andrew Jackson of Timelock Photography we’ll select our favourites and print them in a future publication. Our thanks go again to the team at The Roses Theatre who are giving five lucky winners a set of four complimentary film tickets. Entering is easy so why not take two minutes to see if you can win? Look out also for this season’s money-off vouchers, helping you to make savings where you can. Whatever you have planned this summer, enjoy the milder weather and remember to keep us informed of your news & projects. THE EASY WAY TO SELL Do you want to sell your car without the hassle of advertising? Shaun Taylor of Tewkesbury based Car Trade Direct has worked in the local motor trade for 30 years and been at his current site for the last seventeen. We asked his advice. Motoring is so expensive these days. How can I achieve the best price for my car? Anyone buying a used car will want to ensure it’s genuine, well maintained and offers good value for money. There are three indicators we look for: a good service history, the general condition of the car and how it has been looked after. A filthy car in poor condition will raise concerns about the possibility of underlying issues. It’s always worth paying for a valet before you try to sell your vehicle.
getting a company car. Others will have taken the car off road or may have suffered a bereavement. We appreciate how difficult it can be to let go of a car that belonged to a loved one and that’s where our visit at home service can help.
How does your process work? If you give us a ring we can often give you a rough idea of value over the phone but we’d never commit to a precise figure until we have assessed the car ourselves. You can then pop along to our forecourt, just What kind of cars do you buy? outside Tewkesbury, or we can People come to us with all makes come and visit you at home. of cars valued from £500 - £24k. Beware of anyone who will promise you a price that seems high and always read the small print. Some garages give a price unseen but then reduce it by as much as 25% when they come to collect your vehicle. Some even charge you an administration fee of £50-75 to buy your car! What about your valuation? We don’t like to mislead so offer one fixed price. As car values change monthly, we’ll be clear how long it’s valid for so you have time to reflect. SINGING AS A TONIC
Would you like to sing for pure enjoyment? No auditions, no pressure, no requirement to read music? Here, Sue Barnes and Clive Stubbs invite you to take a vocaltonic.
F
ollowing a wonderful start last January, vocaltonic, a fresh, new, up-beat choir experience invites you to come along to a free taster session. We provide a platform for local men and women to have fun through singing and realise their potential as performers. It’s widely recognised that there are significant benefits to be gained from singing. Absorbing yourself in learning something new that exercises your physical, emotional and intellectual ‘muscles’ and sharing that experience with a like-minded, friendly team will see these benefits multiply. Although we sing in harmony, members do not need to be able to read music. You will benefit from our innovative teaching techniques, so a good ear and plenty of enthusiasm is all that is required. One of our main aims is to have fun and make this social event the highlight of your week. A wide variety of contemporary music is covered from recent chart music to classic hits from the past. Members have the chance to suggest their favourite pieces and perform a solo or two! As a member you will meet new friends, learn a fresh approach to music and, in the process, grow in confidence. We have many years experience of performing in choirs, orchestras, ensembles and rock bands and the members of vocaltonic will

GOING AWAY this summer? While crime remains relatively low locally, the warmer weather provides burglars with welcome opportunities when we vacate our homes to go on holiday. Follow these tips from West Mercia and ensure you and your property stay secure this summer.
W
est Mercia is a safe place to live and burglary figures remain low. In fact, less than one per cent of homes are burgled each year and your local policing team is working hard to reduce this figure even further. Most burglaries are carried out by opportunistic thieves and up to half are committed by thieves who enter the house through an unlocked door or an open window. With the advent of warmer weather, West Mercia Police is reminding residents to be vigilant and follow a few simple steps to significantly reduce the chances of their home being broken into over the summer months and while away on holiday. Ensure doors and windows are locked at all times. Fit sturdy deadlocks (British Standard BS3621) to all external doors

Expert Advice on training your puppy from Vet Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens with Rachel Butler of The Happy Dog Training Company.
A
s a vet, I often talk to owners who are struggling to manage their dog’s behaviour so when we took Muddy on, I wanted to do all I could to ensure she didn’t cause any problems within our family. Medically, it’s not safe to take puppies out before they have completed their vaccinations. However, research shows that failure to socialise them during these early weeks can have adverse effects later on. Working with Dog Trainer Rachel Butler, our Nurse Zoe runs fortnightly Puppy Parties at our Walton Cardiff clinic which we regularly took Muddy to. They’re a great way of introducing your puppy to others
in a carefully controlled manner. Play is managed closely with puppies being let off in small groups, to interact with, and learn from, suitable playmates. There’s the chance to ask questions and receive support in the early days of puppy ownership plus everyone gets a free goodie bag with samples and handouts. Once Muddy had received all her jabs, we moved on to complete a six week course of Puppy School Classes at The Wheatpieces Community Centre, opposite our main clinic. I took the boys along too and they have benefited as much as Muddy and I from learning all the do’s and don’ts

Buzz Electrical
Did You Know?
When was the last time your electrics were tested? Buzz Electrical, approved NICEIC contractors, offer a complete range of inspection and testing services for domestic landlords, private home owners and property management companies. Here, M.D Steve Owens explains.
A
re you confident that the electric wiring in your home is safe? Did you know that several mortgage providers now ask for proof? An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is a report into the condition of your electrics which will reveal any safety issues (Electrical regulations BS7671). Although it is not a statutory requirement for privately owned households, it is advisable that the electrics of all properties are tested at regular intervals and no less than every ten years. For privately rented properties it’s important to ensure that all electrical appliances and fittings within the property are safe and in good working order as you can still be held liable if there
is an injury caused by an unsafe electrical installation. Home Safety Tips from BUZZ Ensure sockets and switches are not cracked. Ensure RCD protection on all socket outlets in your home. Get a mains operated Smoke Detection system with a battery back up, including smoke detection on the landing and hallway and a heat detector in the kitchen, all linked together to give maximum protection to Fire Regulations B5839. Ensure that your electrician has used fire rated fittings on all recessed down lighters where there is a habitable floor above. For more hints and tips please visit www.facebook.com/buzz electrical
We are keen to train up new people and take on young apprentices. Helen Morrison, pictured above, is our first female apprentice, now in her second year of training. She has been chosen as an ambassador for trade organisation JTL. Our team undergo continuous training and are fully updated on technical developments and safety regulations.

The Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign is a registered charity raising £1.8million to fund a new, dedicated Breast Unit for use by women and men across the County for all breast related issues. To date the Campaign has raised over £900,000, passing the half way point. Consultant Breast Surgeon Steven Thrush explains more. How many people are affected by this issue locally? Our slogan, Everybody Knows Somebody, tells it all. Almost 500 people in Worcestershire are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. About 1 in 3 women will see a breast specialist at some point in their life and about 1 in 9 will develop breast cancer. Thankfully the majority of those seen do not have a serious breast problem but all need a rapid and thorough assessment. Almost all women, and an increasing number of men, referred to us believe they may have cancer the stress and anxiety associated with this is significant. Why was the Breast Unit Campaign set up? The Campaign was initiated in 2007 to provide a dedicated Breast Care Unit for the County. When Worcester’s new hospital was built, breast services were provided through the general surgical team or referred out of the County so no provision was made for dedicated space for a specialist breast service. Now an
excellent specialist breast team has been developed but care is currently provided in less than ideal circumstances. What do you aim to achieve? Our aim is to ensure that the process of assessing, investigating and treating any breast problem is as quick, stress -free and efficient as possible. At the moment patients experience: a lack of parking which sometimes leads to missed appointments; over-booked and over-crowded clinics and consequently harassed staff; an inability to undergo all investigations on the initial assessment. The breast service is spread out across several floors of the main hospital building. Clinics are held in different places on different days and share facilities alongside other clinics. Each clinic averages 60 patients, and it’s suggested that patients bring a companion. The waiting rooms have only 24 seats and so queues are inevitable. All this increases anxiety for patients at an already stressful time.

ebruary and March proved to be strong sales months for Gusterson Palmer & James. An independent survey carried out by For Sale Sign Analysis during February, showed that we had the most Sold signs of all Estate Agents in Evesham, a total of 26%. We are proud to confirm that despite the economic climate, we have now won 13 out of 15 of these quarterly awards. We also conduct our own internal research. Interestingly, six out of the eleven properties that we agreed sales on in March were February 2013 instructions showing there is still a strong demand locally for properties being marketed at realistic prices. The remaining five properties had been for sale for a little while but their vendors had been open to amend their prices to keep in line with current market conditions. If you want to move house, are you aware of the information about your property that may be required by a purchaser and their solicitor? This includes: 1.Boiler Service History. Most buyers would want reassurance
and evidence that a boiler has been serviced within the last 12 months. At a cost of approx £60+VAT this is a simple task to undertake prior to selling. 2. Has there been any alterations or extensions? If so, solicitors will request that the necessary planning and building regulation documents are in place. 3. Is there a FENSA certificate? A Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme certificate is needed for any windows installed since April 2002. You can apply to the Local Authority for retrospective building regulations consent, or if the window was installed more than 12 months ago, you can obtain indemnity insurance. For details visit www.fensa.org.uk For a free expert appraisal of your property by our experienced team please call 01386 761241.

I’ve been careful to structure my business with fair, honest service as the cornerstone and I’m grateful to have been rewarded with an ever growing, loyal customer base, keeping me busy. Investing in my premises is what this year is all about. Having recently taken over the entire workshop, I have installed in a second vehicle ramp which means I can now juggle work more effectively and offer a more efficient service. I can also provide secure, insured workshop space for your self build projects or any vehicle storage needs. I continue to offer MOT’s on the premises and have the equipment to fix almost anything. f you want a great family day out this summer, mark Sunday 18th August in your diary. Our festival is unique to Tewkesbury and bigger than many other vehicle rallies that take place locally. Tewkesbury School (GL20 8LF) is a great location, within easy walking distance of town. Not all vehicles are of vintage maturity. Recent entries ranged from a 1904
Peugeot Open Tourer and an original 1914 Pioneer Triumph motorcycle right up to some of the latest bike and ‘Super Car’ offerings from Ferrari, Lamborghini and others. A special visitor last year was a 1936 Type B Alfa Romeo straight 8 supercharged Grand Prix car, once driven by Tazio Nuvolari and currently valued at £2.25 million! When you have had your fill of cars and bikes, there are fairground attractions for the kids, fine teas, cakes, burgers and hot dogs plus a licensed bar, trade stands and market stalls, selling everything from auto-jumble parts to jewellery, crafts and furniture. Please visit our website to find out more.

Stall holders will be grouped with fairground attractions, near to food and drink. Stalls are offered on a first come, first served basis so book early to secure the best location. ON THE HUNT with the Buzzard
Words: Wendy Carter Photos: Pete Walkden & Julie Hunt
Our most common bird of prey in England is a conservation success story. Wendy Carter of WWT explains more.
G
rowing up, I was transfixed if I was lucky enough to see a buzzard yet they’re now widespread across the Severn and Avon Vales, Bredon Hill and even the M5 corridor. In the 1960’s, their population crashed due to long-term persecution and a rapid decline in rabbit numbers (their main prey) following the introduction of Myxomatosis. Thankfully, they’ve since made a great recovery. In Spring, these normally solitary birds pair up to raise young. In the last couple of months you may have seen them soaring and tumbling through the air in an effort to impress prospective partners. They construct their nests in the fork or on a branch of a large tree, usually near the edge of a wood, and will currently be incubating 2-4 eggs. The female will brood the chicks
while the male finds food, usually (up to rabbit-sized) mammals, but they will take birds, reptiles and carrion. Surprisingly, buzzards also eat a lot of earthworms so watch out for them sitting in fields that have recently been ploughed. Over the coming weeks you may hear young calling for their parents - a mewing ‘pee-yow’ - but beware, you’ll be dive-bombed by protective parents if you get too close to their nest. The colour of buzzards varies but they’re easily recognisable once they’re up in the air as they hold their wings in a shallow ‘v’ and fan their tail. So, when you’re next out for a walk or driving down the road and spot a buzzard atop a telegraph post or soaring through the sky, take time to stop and thank your lucky stars that we’ve still got these magnificent birds to watch.
