Hello... …and welcome to the autumn issue. Have you ever noticed how the simplest lessons are the most difficult to learn? We live in such a highly developed society yet many of us struggle with the fundamentals - how to eat, how to sleep, how to handle change. This idea has come up a lot recently in conversations with friends and colleagues who have just returned from their annual holiday. With a rare chance to breathe out, it seems that what so many of us long for is the simple things - time and space, meaningful interaction and the luxury of just being. Developing an insight which reaches to the core of an issue - to benefit your life or that of others - will sometimes require the lifelong effort of a brilliant brain but more often, it arises when one of us just steps aside and looks at a problem with fresh eyes, paying attention to the basics. You’ll see a great example of this in our feature on a new project that has started at St Richard’s Hospice. This issue, we also bring you two competitions, in association with Folly Gardens Vets and The Roses. As always, there’s news from a range of local faces plus events and money saving vouchers on our Offers pages. Autumn is often seen as a time of closing in but ask yourself, what insight can you develop that will open up your world this season? It might be as simple, and yet profound, as the discipline of a daily walk. Until next time,

S
earching for your ideal home can be a fun and exciting experience. However, once you feel you have found ‘the one,’ taking the next step of making an offer can often feel daunting, especially for first time buyers or those who have not moved home for many years. Trying to ensure a successful outcome of making an offer requires consideration and preparation as follows: Experience has shown that it is essential to plan your finances and to know your budget. Taking professional financial advice can help determine the maximum you are able to pay for a property. Be prepared to progress quickly should your offer be accepted. Seek a suitable conveyancing firm or solicitor to act for you on your purchase. Researching similar properties that have recently sold in the area may help you decide how much to offer. However, remember to
consider how the house you want differs from others in its specific location and condition. Consider any items you want to be included in your offer and also any timescale you wish to achieve. This can help avoid disappointment later on. Be prepared to negotiate but remember your budget. Know your limit and stay within it. Make the estate agent aware of your situation. Buyers with no related sale who can proceed quickly may be looked upon more favourably by the sellers, particularly if they are in a hurry to move. Once you are happy with all of the above make your offer. Good Luck! If you would like advice on buying, selling or letting a property please call our friendly team on 01386 761241.

Kemerton Remembers We talked to Bredon Hill resident Andrew James about a project in tribute to the people of Kemerton who fought in WW1.
T
he Cross in Kemerton has been a feature of Andrew James’ life for as long as he can remember. As a boy he stood waiting for the school bus every morning, reading the names on it and wondering about the people they belonged to. Decades later, inspired by a series of lectures given by John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society, he, Judy Woodman, and Dave and Angie Devereux, decided to satisfy their curiosity. Over the last year the group has
researched and prepared detailed biographies of the 21 men from Kemerton who died and who are commemorated on the war memorial and/or included among the 115 men and one woman on the Roll of Honour in St Nicholas’ Church. They reflect a fascinating range of war experience from the youngest, Geoffrey Holland-Martin aged 19, to the oldest Harry Hopton aged 60, to his sister Maud Hopton, the only woman to serve, and Hubert Festing, who was posthumously decorated
with a Distinguished Service Order (DSO). To provide a context and permanent record, the group has discovered what Kemerton was like before and after the War, produced a 56 page A5 brochure, and organised an exhibition to be held in Kemerton Village Hall on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November. TheVictoria Hall, which opened in 1903, is a fitting place for the exhibition as it was the focus of much activity during the war. Not only was it the site of a recruitment drive which

resulted in eight men signing up, it served as a temporary home for a family of Belgian refugees and, along with St Nicholas’ Church, was one of the two places where the first flags were hoisted when news of peace reached Kemerton. On 14th June 1919, it was also the venue where 43 returning soldiers and sailors were welcomed back with a supper provided by the villagers. That year the Parish Council decided to create a war memorial and on 9th January 1921 the Cross was unveiled and dedicated amid ‘a good gathering of parishioners and friends.’ Designed by Herbert Baker and
adapted from an ancient village cross at Laycock in Chippenham, the stone was drawn from Box Quarry in Minchinhampton, and Leckhampton. Unfortunately, there is no record of how names were chosen for inclusion, though all had a family connection to the village. In 1943, the memorial was substantially repaired and later re -dedicated to include the seven names of the Kemertonians who fell between 1939-1945. This project has received some financial support from Wychavon District Council but all other costs are being met by donations and the sale of the brochure. The
information unearthed will also be disseminated through the internet via the host of WW1 sites already set up. ‘Kemerton Remembers’ takes place on Saturday and Sunday 8th & 9th November at Kemerton Village Hall, Main Rd, Kemerton, GL20 7JN, 11am-3pm. Admission is free and teas will be provided by the W.I. There will be soldier biographies and village history with military memorabilia displayed courtesy of local WW1 enthusiast, Colin Blake. If you are unable to attend, a memorial brochure will be available by post for £2+£2p&p from October 24th. For more details please contact Andrew James on 01386 725363.

Creating storage for your
HOME Fitted furniture often provides the most effective way to maximise storage. A bespoke solution designed for your property need not be expensive suggests carpenter and joiner Simon Siller.
It’s a fact of modern life that most of our houses were not intended to be used in the way that we live in them. All but the newest properties were designed for another lifestyle, one in which technology was less central. Those of us in the building trade see the consequences of this daily; families struggling with the practicalities of living, and often working, in a cluttered space intended for a different function. Computers, TV’s, digital boxes, music systems, gaming devices and wires seem to present the most problems. Where should they be situated? And how can the space they occupy be organised so that it is functional and attractive? Often, the best solution is an individually designed media centre which enables you to arrange all your items on shelves, behind cupboard doors, and in drawers. A
bespoke design might sound costly but as most electronic goods come in standard sizes, a capable joiner should be able to create a wall of cabinetry for a reasonable sum. Cabinets can be made of a range of materials including oak, tulip wood and MDF, then stained or painted. Items to be painted are often fitted primed to be decorated by us later or left for you to finish. This also applies to wardrobes, bookshelves, cupboards and kitchens. You may want to renovate your home all at once or room by room. Whatever you prefer we can help you maximise storage, achieve continuity of design and complete your project within budget. Oakwoods is a subsidiary of Alderwood Construction Ltd. From our dedicated workshop we produce bespoke windows, doors and fitted cabinetry for individual projects at sensible prices. For a free survey and quote please call Simon Siller on 01242 621190.

Barn Owls are the most beautiful of birds. Wendy Carter of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust offers an insight. t’s often dark when I finish work in the autumn but there’s always the chance of spotting a barn owl on my drive home. These ghostly birds take to the air at dusk, floating over the landscape on the hunt for small mammals. Not just beautiful, barn owls are amazing. They have ears at different heights to help pinpoint the exact location of a vole or mouse; they can even hear one through snow. The shape of their eyeballs means they can only see forward, which is why they can turn their heads so far, but they have poor long-distance eyesight; not a problem for hunting but it does mean they sometimes fail to see cars hurtling towards them. Barn owls are perfect hunters; combine the above features with

feathers designed to give a silent flight. Feathers at the front of the wing are serrated, those at the back are tattered and the remaining areas and legs are covered in a fine down to ensure soundless wing beats and no ‘whistling’ wind. Think about the sound of a flying swan or even a blue tit flitting to your garden feeder and you’ll understand what I mean. 2014 has been a good year for barn owls but numbers have generally been declining due to habitat loss (destruction of big old trees with nesting holes, demolition/conversion of farm buildings, change of land use) and our climate change. A really cold winter could undo this population boost so if you spy an owl on your way home spare them a thought as you snuggle up with a cuppa!

of Eating Outdoors Expert advice on new stand alone garden buildings from L&L
A Pavilion in white with a polycarbonate roof and tiled flooring, styled as a summerhouse for dining
L&L, in tandem with established Welsh supplier, Nordic Garden Buildings, have launched a new range of stand alone glass buildings which can be put to a various uses. They are ideal as an outdoor dining room. Director, John Lannen explains more.
T
he summer of 2014 will go down as one when we all actually managed to live outdoors, not just wish that we could. I can’t remember a year when we’ve been able to eat outside so often and it’s been a treat to get out in the garden and enjoy some fresh air after work. Our new range of garden buildings make it possible to enjoy the simple pleasure of eating outdoors much earlier in the spring and continue it right
through the seasons. The idea of a garden building is not new but our ability to build them using modern, thermally efficient glass is. With six colour options and a choice of glass, brickwork, roofing and flooring you can create a unique dining space from a range of styles and sizes. It could be tucked away in a secret corner or situated to offer panoramic views of your garden. You don’t even need planning permission, just a suitable deck,

patio or concrete base. Being made of glass means your building will be permanent, secure and long lasting, yet comparable in price to timber. And unlike wood, it doesn't need any annual maintenance. Nordic Garden Buildings are manufactured by a Welsh company that has been manufacturing products from PVCu for 40 years. Their range of garden buildings are robust and secure with multipoint door and window locks plus a guarantee. Insulation, automatic air and roof vents, windows and air conditioning can help maintain a comfortable temperature all year round. Heating can be added with an electric fan heater, under floor heating or a wood burning stove. Installation takes just a day or two and the structure is fully portable meaning you can take it with you if you move house. Furnish it to your taste with a table and chairs, blinds, cushions and candles and you will have a practical and stylish dining space in which to relax and unwind. To find out more please visit our Tewkesbury showroom. Our friendly team are available MonFri 8.30am-5pm and Sat 9am1pm. We offer complimentary parking and refreshments and promise no high pressure sales.

Have You Fallen Out of Love With Your Greenhouse?
“
Extend your options for eating outdoors with a stand alone glass building
”
Traditional greenhouses are single glazed making them flimsy and susceptible to the elements. Too many sit, dilapidated, in a corner of the garden, rotting or leaking water. If this sounds familiar, come and talk to us. Our new range of Nordic Garden Buildings include Scanline greenhouses built using thermally efficient double glazing. They are sturdy and well insulated meaning your tender and exotic plants will flourish through the winter, allowing you to garden all year round. Launched in Europe, they have been tested against extreme weather conditions and proven to be robust. Built to last, they weigh over 800kg so won’t blow over in the wind. With opening roof and window vents, safety glass and multi- lock security, they are also designed to be safe and low maintenance. If you choose to add heating your costs will be reduced when compared to a single glazed unit. Installation is quick and simple as long as it’s onto a solid base of treated timber or bricks, designed to last as long as your greenhouse.

12 months membership of Folly Gardens Pet Health Plan. Enter our competition elsewhere in this magazine
olly Gardens is excited to announce further expansion. Earlier this month we moved to our new, larger Bishops Cleeve clinic, just across the road from our previous location. With two clinics in Tewkesbury and a third in Bishops Cleeve, we now offer improved service and flexibility to pet owners who live and work around Bredon Hill and Cheltenham. We have wanted to expand our services in Bishops Cleeve for some time but had to wait until a suitable location could be found. Our new site offers numerous advantages, being within easy reach of surrounding villages and having ample parking at Tesco next door. We can now carry out diagnostic tests on site to determine the cause of your pets’ illness without them having to travel to Tewkesbury. We can offer routine nurse consultations and also have a facility for dog grooming with experienced professionals. To celebrate the opening of our new clinic, we are running a competition to win a one year membership of the Folly Gardens Pet Health Plan, worth up to £250. We believe that a proactive, preventative approach
The expansion of Folly Gardens Vets, Tewkesbury and Bishops Cleeve, continues with a brand new clinic now open opposite the previous Bishops Cleeve site. Vet Brad Cooper explains more.
to pet healthcare is far better than waiting until your pet is vulnerable, ill or suffering to put things right. We want to make responsible pet ownership simple and affordable, alleviating the worry of potentially costly veterinary treatment. The plan allows you and your vet to make decisions based upon what is best for your pet rather than looking at the cost/benefit of each option. Folly Gardens Pet Health Plan was devised by looking at the cost of essential treatments such as neutering, vaccinations, flea treatments, worming and dentals, totting up the figure, applying a discount and then dividing the cost into affordable monthly payments. It makes it easy for you to protect your pet and your family against preventable diseases and discomfort by making sure your pet’s vaccinations, flea, worm and parasite treatments are kept up to date. Plus, regular check ups and early diagnosis of any health issues will help your pet enjoy a long, comfortable life, whilst saving you money and worry too. Be sure to enter the competition today! Wishing you and your pet well ...

How To Get Ahead with Self Build & DIY 2014 has seen a range of developments at Bps Tewkesbury, all aimed of making life simple for customers involved in self-build or DIY projects. We asked new manager, Matt Cook, for advice on how to progress your plans in a buoyant market. What’s happening in the building trade now? This is now being reflected in longer lead times for some products, such as bricks which can be on order for up to 4-5 months. If you want to embark on a project next spring, the key is to plan ahead.
What help can you offer with self build or DIY? We have settled staff of ten here, and three more branches in the region, and our policy of promoting internally means we hold a huge amount of expertise in-house. The team has always been able to offer sound advice but by retraining and reorganising, more members of our staff now have specialist knowledge across multiple areas. Spetchley Park Gardens …on a voyage of Revival The team at Spetchley Park Gardens has embarked on a five year project to complete a new Car Park and Welcome Centre, create an Heritage Centre and renovate the lake. Henry Berkeley explains.
T
The Spetchley Revival Project is a five year plan designed to invest in securing the Gardens for future generations to enjoy. Stage 1 will be completed by 2015, including the construction of a new Car Park and Welcome Centre which will offer an improved range of merchandise and plant sales, the creation of a children's activity pack and the provision of two allterrain mobility scooters for hire. We are delighted to announce that we have recently entered Stage 2 by being allowed a £1.4m Round Two grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). This will provide the necessary
capital to carry out tree pruning and planting, improve access to the Deer Park, and restore our Victorian Garden Pond, which is such a valued part of the landscape. Next year, we will be dredging and rebuilding the banks, repuddling and installing aeration pads for improved biodiversity and wildlife. For 2016, we will convert the old Cart Sheds to create a Heritage and Education Centre which will offer interactive displays interpreting the history of the Berkeley family, the landscape, and Gardens. It will also function as an education room for use by schools and
community groups, as well as giving local artists the chance to exhibit their work. Finally, we are restoring our 18th century Sovereign Stage Coach which will be displayed for the first time in over 100 years. Above all our Revival Project is about people; providing opportunities for volunteers to take an active role and enabling everyone in the local community to enjoy the magnificence of Spetchley Gardens. If you’d like to join us on our voyage of revival then, as well as visiting next season, you can become a Friend or volunteer. For more details please call 01905 345106.

Retirement brings with it challenges - how do you keep your brain active, develop your interests and make new friendships? We found out how the U3A can contribute.
T
he U3A, brought to Britain in 1981 by Peter Laslett, provides a vehicle for groups of retired or semi-retired people to share educational, creative and leisure activities. It is a non-profit, non-religious and non-political organisation with no lower age limit. Its unique guiding principle is 'those who learn shall also teach,' a philosophy based on the idea that people who have a lifetime of work behind them can probably usefully share their knowledge. Members learn from each other through pooling their knowledge, skills and experience. Instead of a teacher, groups have a leader to co-ordinate and guide their efforts. Activities are organised
mainly in small groups that meet regularly, often in each other's homes. Pershore and District U3A has a vibrant membership and a wide choice of interest groups, from French to Art to Walking, with new ones being added all the time. You can even start your own as there is always support available. For a modest annual subscription of ÂŁ11 single or ÂŁ20 for two people (at the same address) you can take part in monthly meetings, interest groups, events and activities. British Council International School Award Success for B.H.M.S. Bredon Hill Middle School in Ashton-Under-Hill has been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.
T
he International School Award is a badge of honour for schools that do outstanding work in international education, such as through links with partner schools overseas. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens. Some of Bredon Hill Middle School’s international work includes hosting a Comenius Assistant from Belgium, a Language Leaders Award, various projects with schools in France and Sweden on the e-Twinning platform, a visit to France and a French school, hosting the visit of 80 French pupils, project work on China and reinforcement of internationalism in the curriculum. On presenting the Award, John Rolfe, from the British Council, said: ‘The school’s fantastic
international work has rightfully earned it this prestigious award. The International School Award is a great chance for schools to demonstrate the important work they’re doing to bring the world into their classrooms. Adding an international dimension to children’s education ensures that they are truly global citizens and helps prepare them for successful future careers in an increasingly global economy.’ 2013/14 saw more than 500 schools receive International School Award accreditation. This includes a wide range of schools from a variety of different backgrounds and areas across the UK. The Award is now available worldwide as part of the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms programme. Around 5000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999. The ISA, encourages and supports schools to develop an international ethos, ensuring a majority of pupils are
involved in international work, and involving the wider community. If you’d like to offer support or get involved please contact Bredon Hill Middle School using the details below.

goods vehicles could get a maximum fine of £2,500. If you’re a new driver you will lose your licence if you get 6 or more penalty points within 2 years of passing your test. These offences apply simply if you are seen using a mobile while driving. If your driving is bad, or if there is a crash while you are using the phone, you could be prosecuted for careless driving, dangerous driving or, if someone is killed, for causing death by careless or dangerous driving.

MOBILES & driving
Several recent high profile cases have highlighted that using a mobile phone, sat nav or any similar device whilst driving means that the driver’s attention is distracted from the road. So what is acceptable? West Mercia Police advise. The facts
You are four times more likely to crash if you use a mobile phone while driving
Reaction times for drivers using a phone are around 50% slower than normal driving
Even careful drivers can be distracted by a call or text – and a split-second lapse in concentration could result in a crash.
The law
It’s illegal to use a hand-held mobile when driving on the road. If you are caught, you could be fined and lose your licence and your insurance costs could go up. Penalties include the following: You can get an automatic fixed penalty notice if you’re caught using a hand-held phone while driving or riding. You’ll get 3 penalty points on your licence and a fine of £100. Your case could also go to court and you could be disqualified from driving or riding and get a maximum fine of £1,000. Drivers of buses or
It’s illegal to ride a motorcycle or drive using hand-held phones or similar devices. The rules are the same if you’re stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic. It’s also illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device when supervising a learner driver or rider.
Exemptions You can make a call to 999 or 112 in a genuine emergency, provided it is unsafe or impractical for you to stop first.
Using a phone in a car Don't use a mobile phone held in the hand while driving or while stopped with the engine switched on - it is illegal. Stop to make or take a call, or leave it to go to voicemail, even if you have a hands-free phone. If you must talk, keep conversations short and simple or say that you will find a safe, legal place to stop and call back. If you're an employer then you should issue specific company advice on mobile phone use as part of your work-related road safety policy. If you have any information or concerns about your community you can raise them by contacting your Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101 or dial 999 in an emergency. You can also call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 to report information anonymously.

The power of
Gardening A new men’s gardening group at St Richard’s Hospice has proved a worthwhile project, offering men with a life-threatening illness space to relax and meet others facing similar situations. Helen Griffee, Communications Officer explains. ur new men’s gardening group, which was set up in spring this year and is held each week in our serene gardens, offers men under the care of the hospice the opportunity to take time out, enjoy some light gardening and share their experiences. The group was set up in partnership with Prostate Cancer UK and horticulture expert Duncan Coombs - a recently retired lecturer from Pershore College - is on hand to guide men with little or no experience of gardening as well as help experienced ‘green fingered’ men develop their skills. There is also time to speak to specialist nurses and doctors, to have counselling, access benefits advice or try some complementary therapies. Vanessa Gibson, Community Team Leader, explained how the group came about; “We noticed that it is predominantly women who attend our support groups and so we decided to set up a group especially for men. There is always a nurse on hand in case anyone feels poorly or wants to talk about their illness. We find that this is a good introduction to the hospice and gives men the opportunity to share their problems, and perhaps prevent
O
them from being alone. The ethos of the group is that sometimes in the midst of hospital appointments, health concerns and treatments, patients may need some space.” Each week, up to ten men take part in gardening related activities which are matched to each person’s level of ability. Already the group has enjoyed a successful crop of new potatoes, tomatoes and salad leaves with lots more growing fast. The session is structured so that there is plenty of time to sit down for a cup of tea and those who would prefer to relax can do so in the group’s dedicated shed. Duncan Coombs, the volunteer group leader, said; “We thought it would be fun to set up a group so that chaps can get together and do some light gardening, have a cup of tea and a chat. It would give them a break and a chance to learn a bit about gardening – some know a little and some have lots of knowledge to share. The group plans its activities week by week and has been growing vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce and sweetcorn. It doesn’t really matter how successful the harvest is, it’s the process of tending to the plants that the men find therapeutic.” Chris Green, aged 51 from
Droitwich, has a brain tumour and is currently being supported by St Richard’s Hospice at Home service. He has been attending Day Hospice for a year and has been part of the Men’s Space Group since it started. He said; “I have really enjoyed picking up new skills, such as learning how to prick out seedlings and how to take hard and softwood cuttings. I enjoy coming along to the group as there’s a real sense of friendship and we have a bit of a laugh. It gives us all a break from the serious business of life, but we have the opportunity to share our problems if we want to.” Louise Jackson, Community Support Services Manager for Prostate Cancer UK said, “40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the UK. Some face the prospect of their cancer never being cured which can be incredibly difficult to come to terms with. Gardening, being outside and sharing experiences with others who can relate to what you’re going through can be a tremendous comfort to many and we’re thrilled to be involved with the new group with St Richard’s Hospice.” To see a short video of the Men’s Space Group go to the website (details opposite) or to www.youtube.com/hospicesrh

To join the Men’s Space group a person must have a confirmed life-threatening diagnosis; a South Worcestershire GP and be referred to St Richard’s Hospice. Anyone can refer to the group, including patients themselves, and hospice staff will liaise with their GP. St Richard’s Hospice runs a variety of mixed groups for patients but this is the first time a group has been started specifically for men only. For more details please contact the Triage Nurse at St Richard’s Hospice on 01905 763963 or email triage@strichards.org.uk
St Richard's Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and supports their families. Each year the hospice team supports over 2,400 patients and family members in Worcestershire. Patients are cared for in Day Hospice, the 17-bed In-patient Unit or in their own homes by a professional team as well as many trained volunteers. In the Inpatient Unit specialist staff are on hand 24 hours a day to manage patients' symptoms and where, if they so choose, patients may

spend the last few days of life in comfort and dignity. St Richard's is an independent charity and is grateful for all donations to help them continue their work. St Richard’s Hospice is located just off the M5 J7 at Wildwood Drive, Worcester WR5 2QT.
