Hello... ...and welcome to the summer issue. In many ways, our community is in flux; our high streets are changing and so are our churches, our health and education systems are being overhauled, and the economy remains a challenge, albeit that business has got easier for some. In such times we tend to take comfort in the familiar, reverting to traditional brands and values. We also get creative, thinking up fresh solutions with which to carve out a future. Sitting here, I love picking up the phone, and hearing news of them. How lucky we are to live in a place of real community, bound by organisations and relationships upon which we can all draw at different stages of our lives. So many threads weave together to make up this fabric but it’s all of them, taken together, which make this area such a special place to live. Some aspects of village life may seem humble, and being involved in them will not bring us any accolades, but without them, our lives, and our communities, would be so much poorer. This issue we bring details of several traditional events, all organised by volunteers, which are not only symbolic of the social life of our villages but part of their lifeblood. Thanks to all of you in advance for supporting them this summer and in turn enabling numerous local clubs, organisations and amenities to survive. The contributions we make do not have to be huge or heroic to make a difference - after all, a single conversation can be life changing all that matters is that we do contribute. Right now, I bet there’s a vacant role in your village - what might you be inspired to do?

All dogs, especially long haired breeds, should have their paws, toes & ears trimmed short in summer & autumn. Every inch of your dog should be routinely checked for grass seeds after every walk. Take special care in between toes, around the ears, eyelids & lip folds where seeds get stuck. Look out for head-shaking, pawlicking, frantic pawing of the ear & lethargy. Always seek treatment immediately. Spread the word: tell your friends.

Expert Advice on protecting your puppy from from the dreaded summer problem of grass seeds from Vet Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens.
A
t Vet School it’s drilled into us that, ‘common things are common.’ Grass seeds cause of one of the most painful, distressing and expensive conditions affecting dogs. All breeds are susceptible, especially if walked in meadows or woodland, but Spaniel breeds like Muddy, Jack Russells and Westies are particularly vulnerable because of their hairy ears and feet. Grass seeds are evolved to be distributed. Their minute size and barbed shape means they easily attach themselves to fur and travel only one way. Often, a seed will embed itself between the toes, penetrate the skin, then burrow deep into the sensitive tissues of
the foot, resulting in extreme pain, discomfort, infection and lameness. Time and vigilance are of the essence as the longer a grass seed is left untreated, the more likely it is to track up the paw, armpit, ear, or groin. We’ve removed grass seeds from dog’s chests months after the, "grass seed season." We have found them in muscles, buried deep within the abdomen, and even in the liver! They can be a huge problem. Sometimes, they remain shallow and can be easily pulled out but usually, heavy sedation or general anaesthetic is required. The seed is often invisible on X-rays so in the

JOHNSTON SCOTIA Scott Johnston - MD
A simple Carbon Monoxide Detector could save your life. So are you doing all you can to protect your family?
The team at Johnston Scotia sometimes have to make safe dangerous boilers and gas appliances. Here, M.D. Scott explains how installing a Carbon Monoxide detector can keep your family safe. WHY DO I NEED A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR? CO2 is a highly poisonous gas produced by boilers, gas appliances, ovens, flues and stoves which have been badly installed, incorrectly repaired or neglected. As well as sudden death, it can cause serious, long term health problems such as paralysis and brain damage. Since you can’t see it, taste it or smell it, Carbon Monoxide often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. A CO2 detector, similar to a smoke alarm, should be installed in every home yet it’s one of those chores that many of us never get around to. ur village event has become a Vale of Evesham tradition. This year we are hoping for good weather, as last year we were very much affected by rain. Andrew says... Black Swan “I like the rare subject of a black swan and also the composition; the swan is centred in the frame, and the main background behind the swan is a neutral blue giving the swan’s outline greater definition. The photo is enhanced with the green foliage in the foreground and the red beak adds an extra strong colour that brings additional life to the image.” Lavender Blue “With no defined lines, this image draws your eye from side to side. I like the density of the purple in the foreground that breaks up slightly as you move into the picture where more green is apparent, and then there is a full width streak of white flowers which breaks the image up again.”

or many years now Dumbleton Cricket Club has played host to one of the finest village fetes in the area. It’s a great place to meet up with friends and this year promises to be better than ever. Set in picturesque parkland, surrounded by magnificent trees in our tranquil, welcoming village, the fete offers a fantastic afternoon for all the family. Be sure to arrive promptly for the infamous Bottle, Book and Bric-a-brac stalls! For the children we have games, face painting, Punch and Judy, bouncy castles, swingboats, skittles and, if we’re lucky, a fire engine. Adults can take a turn at laser clay pigeon shooting or archery and enjoy various countryside demonstrations such as gun dogs and flyfishing. Alternatively, you can simply wander around the
varied stalls which will be on offer. All this enjoyment can be washed down with a traditional cream tea or hog roast bap plus a pint or glass of wine from the bar. The best part of all is that the admission is free. All proceeds go towards the running of the Cricket Club for the benefit of the village and local communities and the purchase of much needed equipment for the juniors. We hope to see you all here on August Bank Holiday Monday. If you have some wares to peddle or want to run a charitable stall then please contact Matt Venner on 07779 665816 regarding a pitch. Find the fete at Dairy Lane, Dumbleton, Nr Evesham WR11 7TP, signposted from the A46. For all enquiries please call Matthew Venner: 07779 665816.

GREENHILL SCHOOL; FOUR INDIVIDUALLY DESIGNED PROPERTIES CONVERTED FROM A GRADE II LISTED VICTORIAN SCHOOL This site, of architectural merit, has a fascinating history. Originally a field called Upper Lanes Ground, it was purchased in 1834 by John Clarke, a silk merchant, who built Lanesfield House and lived there with his family until 1879. The design of the property, comprising the main house and adjoining servant’s wing, reflected his wealth and status. It included a stable block, large planned gardens, an orchard, an open field and a huge oval drive.
Field House 3 Bed
In 1879 the house was bought as the new location for Prince Henry’s Grammar School. In 1881, the estate was partitioned, some land was sold and a large hall was added to cope with increasing numbers of pupils. In 1909 Prince Henry’s Grammar School moved to Victoria Avenue and the site became known as Greenhill School, a private institution. New facilities comprising a classroom and science laboratory were added, probably during the mid 1940s, with further additions in 1986. In 2009 the school closed and the buildings were bought in 2010 for conversion to residential use. Now, a new phase is about to begin. Properties vary in price starting with offers in excess of £350,000. Please visit our website for more details.

FESTIVALS
& events safety
Follow these tips from West Mercia and ensure your property remains secure at festivals and public events this summer.
I
f you are going to a festival, take time to think about how you will keep your belongings safe. Tents are, by their nature, insecure. If you’re spending a lot of time wandering around the festival then your tent will be unattended for long periods so it’s a good idea to get to know your campsite neighbours. Why not form a mini 'Neighbourhood Watch' and look out for one another? Many of the larger festivals will have on-site secure lock-up facilities, so make sure you use them. Don't leave your valuables in your tent when it’s uninhabited. In fact, it’s best to limit the number of valuables you take with you. Is there really any point in bringing your iPod to a live music festival? If it's left safe and secure at home, it can't get lost or stolen! By far the most commonly reported crimes at UK festivals are stolen mobile phones and other electrical gadgets, though police believe in many cases these have been lost rather than stolen. Reporting your property as stolen when you know it is lost in order to get a crime reference number and claim on your insurance is an offence of fraud
so don't do it! Although hundreds of phones and other electrical items are either handed to or recovered by the police, the majority are never reunited with their owners because police have no way of knowing to whom they belong.. By registering your belongings via www.immobilise.com can vastly increase your chances of seeing your gadget again if it’s stolen. It takes just a couple of minutes and it’s completely free. You can register anything with a serial number and every item recovered by police, or handed in, is checked against the database. It's also a good idea to security mark all your belongings with your postcode, including your tent. If you use a UV marker or a forensic property marking kit police can potentially return it to you, plus it gives the criminals some difficult questions to answer!
PROTECT YOUR BELONGINGS Register Today... Registering your belongings via www.immobilise.com can vastly increase your chances of seeing them again if you lose them. It takes just a couple of minutes and it's completely free. You can register anything with a serial number and every item recovered by police, or handed in, is checked against the database.

veryone is welcome to the 2013 Bredon Fun Day, which will take place on Bredon Playing Fields, Main Rd, Bredon GL20 7QN on Sunday 14th July. This year we are taking the circus as our theme. The fun will begin with a parade from Bredon Hancock’s First School at 11.30am, arriving at the playing fields for the opening ceremony at 12noon. Following the success of last year's 'Try 5' we will again have a wide range of activities on offer, including sports and crafts. Wychavon District Council are bringing along a climbing wall and some circus skills equipment. All members of the family will have something to do: as well as a bouncy slide, drumming and face painting there will be several stalls including jewellery making, books, a bbq and a tombola.
When you are ready to relax come and enjoy a sit down and a delicious selection of cakes in the tea tent. We’d be grateful for any tombola prizes; please drop them to 49 Blenheim Drive, Bredon or contact Meryl Falvey to collect on 01684 773183 or 07770 981454. Like to get involved? If you can volunteer some spare time to help please contact Lucy Donovan on the details below.

THE BUZZ
Words: Wendy Carter Right: Wool Carder Bee Photos: Rosemary Winnall & Harry Green
of the Bees
The sound of the humble bumble bee, buzzing around your garden from flower to flower, signals the sound of summer. But what are these endangered insects up to? Wendy Carter of WWT explains.
N Bee Hotel
Homemade Insect Tubes
ot all bees are bumble bees. There are around 250 species of bee in the UK, only 24 of which are of the bumble variety - but they’re all as busy as, well, bees. Take the Wool Carder Bee. Somewhere in a garden near you there will be one stripping the fluff off leaves, especially from Lamb’s Ear plants. Distinct by their yellow markings, the Wool Carder Bee belongs to the leaf-cutter species, all of whom use their jaws to cut leaves, petals and fluff from plants to construct and line their nests. Using their mandibles, they tease out individual hairs of plant before tamping them down; it’s how they got their name! In the course of their work the males aggressively guard both the females and suitable nectaring
plants, even dive-bombing other bees. The females make nests in existing cavities like hollow stems, crevices in masonry and soil etc. Of course, there are many ways you can help bees. Make sure you’ve got plenty of nectar-rich plants in your garden – from early blossoming orchard trees to alliums, lavender, heather and penstemon; the more you plant, the more you will attract. As well as Lamb’s Ear plants, leaf-cutters will appreciate roses and azaleas. Why not buy a bee hotel - shown left - or make your own from short hollow bamboo sticks tied together and hung on your garden fence or shed? With our ever-changeable weather and continued changing land-use, bees are in trouble and need all the help you can give them!
