Welcome... ...to the autumn edition of The Cotswold Edge Directory. What’s the best corner you’ve ever turned? For me, the answer is easy; early morning in Mallorca, June 2000, and the sight of a shimmering bay of water which has become my favourite place to unwind. But there have been other, more important, inner turnings. Right now, it feels like the nation has turned a corner. Who among us will ever forget the summer of 2012? Something has changed and we cannot simply return to what used to be; how exciting to be part of a community in shift. Time will reveal what it will mean for us locally. Meanwhile we want to know about your projects and fresh ideas; maybe we can even help them gain ground? Keep us informed by emailing me at lisa@lifeinthevillage.co.uk. This edition, we take stock of a changing season and begin to look ahead to Christmas. There’s local events, business and charity news, two great Competitions to enter and, of course, your money-saving offers. Until next time...

A hospice full of angels Eugenio Grandi shares his own story of the care his wife, Marilyn, a yoga teacher, received at St Richard’s Hospice .

W

e were first introduced to the help which St Richard’s could provide through our wonderful GP at the point where Marilyn decided that a second round of chemo would do more harm than good. At that stage Marilyn had had a second recurrence of ovarian cancer, much more rapid and aggressive than the first. Our GP suggested a home visit from St Richard’s to assist in creating an environment here at home which would be supportive to Marilyn. We both found the visit extremely supportive and very helpful, both in a practical and emotional sense. Clearly, here was a great resource which focused totally on listening and support and providing wisdom and experience in a manner which was completely personcentred. Over the next few months,

and several home visits, Marilyn’s condition progressed and eventually we found ourselves facing the reality that there was now little that the medical profession could offer. We decided that St Richard’s would be a good place to start the next stage. I must say, that the very idea of a hospice was really challenging. I had images of dark rooms and a sombre end-of -life atmosphere. But our arrival at St Richard’s was on a warm day in early spring 2011 and from the moment we arrived it felt like coming home. We were settled in a surprisingly large and wellappointed room, completely setup, with everything that Marilyn might need, and very, very private. Marilyn was overjoyed. The view from the window looked out over the most beautiful and peaceful grounds.

From that very first encounter, we all felt a deep, deep sense of peace. From Marilyn’s first consultation on arrival it was clear that here, there was technical mastery, as well as deep interpersonal compassion and love – from every single member of the team. Over the next few weeks St Richard’s became our homefrom home. We are a large family (six of us) plus very close extended family and we were all welcomed with open arms. The difference was that if at any stage Marilyn needed anything, and I mean anything, help was at hand in seconds. This gave us and Marilyn a quality of time together that simply could not have been achieved at home. The palliative care at St Richard’s is simply wonderful. Their knowledge of the cancer process and how best to support

an individual in the most noninvasive way both medically and emotionally was just a revelation to us all. The help that St Richard’s provides extends to the whole family and they realise only too well that there are times when the whole family needs supporting in order to be there for their loved one. This may sound strange but the last few days of Marilyn’s life were peaceful and happy. We really felt the staff were there as much for us, as they were for Marilyn. One friend commented when she came to visit, that the whole place feels like it is full of angels. It is.

St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and supports their families.

o you own a property that is vacant, unsold and suitable to let? Whilst new instructions have remained high over the summer viewing figures have been low, the distraction of the home Olympics compounding a traditionally quiet time. However, the lettings market is buoyant with properties taking, on average, just one week to attract a tenant. Two and three bedroom homes in Evesham are in particularly high demand fetching between £525 & £700p.c.m. One option at this time of year is to let your vacant property on a 6 month shorthold tenancy. Some ‘reluctant landlords’are doing so longer term as a way of moving home. As a landlord there are certain legal requirements that need to be in place and you may need to seek permission from your mortgage lender. Team member Sarah Cook can guide you through the process and answer any queries. We offer a range of services from full management

of your property to simply drawing up a tenancy agreement. Planning Your Home Improvements with

A.W. Walker Building Contractors Thinking of improving your living space? In the last decade Offenham based builder, Andrew Walker, has completed a range of projects from small ground works and garage conversions to a Grade 2 Listed Barn Conversion. He offers tips for planning a pain-free refurbishment. FIX YOUR BUDGET Ensure you are making a sound investment by being clear about the upper limit on your spend and securing your finances first. Ask your builder for a fixed quote for the work; we offer a bespoke service at a competitive price and promise no nasty add-ons. You should plan your entire project at the start but consider building it in phases to spread the expense. LIST YOUR PRIORITIES Like an office, a granny annexe, more space for guests? Make a wishlist but be prepared to par it down to meet your budget. We offer a full design and build service, but are equally happy to work with your existing plans.

FIND A REPUTABLE BUILDER Assess your builder by asking for references and going to look at previous jobs. What sets us apart is our attention to detail, creating quality finished projects which give a stunning visual effect. We are as comfortable with traditional building works as we are with contemporary. What Will You

LOOK BACK ON? Dr. R Fisher, Fladbury, Pershore

Wonderful… just perfect

This summer, Pershore based Time Lock Photography celebrated its second birthday. We caught up with Andrew Jackson and discovered how redundancy, hard work and an ever expanding portfolio has enabled him to transform his hobby into a thriving business. “Everyone understands that the best portraits reveal the essence of a person. Candid, quirky and full of laughter, they lock time in a way that nothing else can. The feedback that I often receive is that I have a talent for reaching and capturing personality, even with those who are camera shy. The experience I’ve gained over the last two years has helped me hone my skills. More than 200 studio sessions, 30 plus weddings, an international Motorsport contract, commercial projects and a

range of events at Nurseries, Schools, Balls and Dinners have convinced me that creative photography takes time. Growing pressure on the diary means that I am now joined by other photographers plus my partner Becky, ensuring nobody ever feels hurried. It’s all about you and your experience; we’ve tried to think of everything to help you relax. Our Studio is situated in a stunning converted barn in a lovely, rural setting giving the flexibility of split indoor and outdoor shoots. This autumn why not come and join us to celebrate with our special Half Price Studio Session Offer.”

TRANSFORM YOUR KITCHEN ...on a budget The Village Green Kitchen Company is owned and run by three craftsmen, each bringing a different skill set from their own profession. Between them they have more than 40 years experience in kitchen and bathroom fitting. We talked to them about their work. What’s unique about The Village Green Kitchens Co? We believe that we offer the best value fitted kitchens and bathrooms and take pride in giving attention to detail. We strive to achieve the best possible standards and service from concept through design and installation. We only use the best tried and tested materials and products which have been proven to give long lasting service and will look good for years to come. Our ethos of good old fashioned service, punctuality and dependability has rewarded us with a loyal customer base who are pleased to recommend us to friends and relatives; most of our work is sourced this way. What are the current trends in kitchens? The family dining kitchen is becoming more popular which often necessitates structural alterations. This is where Village Green excels. By keeping all the required trades in-house, from building and structural work to electrics, plumbing, carpentry and tiling,

DID YOU KNOW? We fit a

REMOTE WATER OPERATED FULL STOP SWITCH (Water Isolator) as standard in every kitchen

we ensure that the quality of our workmanship remains high and that the project comes in on time and to budget. How do I ensure a successful outcome to my project? Designing a kitchen or bathroom that looks good and functions well takes a great deal of skill. Attention to detail is paramount at the planning stage because it’s the little things, taken in combination, that will give you a successful result. One feature that many customers appreciate is that all our kitchens now come fitted with a remote water operated full stop switch (Water Isolator). It means you never again have to get down on your hands and knees to do battle with a tricky stopcock. The switch will be fitted in an easily accessible place, usually at waist height in a cupboard. Any kitchen planning tips? Kitchens in lighter, neutral colours like cream, beige and white give the illusion of space. Please contact us today to book your free survey and quote without obligation.

The Deer Park at Spetchley is over 400 years old and home to herds of wonderful wild Red and Fallow Deer. How are the deer farmed? Our deer are fed only the most natural of foods - grass, hay and fodder beet. Allowed to roam free over 150 acres, undisturbed by visitors from November to March, they produce meat which is succulent, tender and tasty. Please be assured that our herd is culled only when necessary to keep it at a healthy, sustainable level. For this reason supply is limited to the date below. How do I cook with venison? Pet Talk

with Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens Clinic, Tewkesbury & Bishops Cleeve

Keep Your Dog Safe From ‘Kennel Cough’ This Autumn Kennel Cough, or to use its scientific name, Infectious Tracheo–bronchitis, is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection that affects dogs, rapidly causing severe coughing, breathlessness, sore throat, high temperature and loss of appetite. In the worst cases (often very young or elderly pets) it can cause severe and prolonged disease and may even be linked to death.

This autumn, to encourage you to keep your dog safe, we are suggesting you make one more social engagement and get him vaccinated. We have three clinics in total, two in Tewkesbury and another in Bishops Cleeve. Visit us at our spacious, purpose built clinic in Walton Cardiff, near Tewkesbury on any afternoon between 2pm and 3pm and you will receive 10% off any pet vaccination, including Kennel Cough.

Kennel Cough is caused by a mixture of viruses and bacterium, Bordertella bronchiseptica. Unlike the common name suggests, dogs can pick it up anywhere that they congregate. However, the stress that can be associated with kennelling can predispose a dog to infections, hence the name.

Despite all the advances in veterinary science, preventative vaccinations remains one of the most effective ways to protect the life and health of your pets. Early immunisation saves lives and much suffering. Many pet owners set out on a regime of vaccinations with good intentions but then fall behind. Most assume that all immunity Luckily, there’s a vaccine to help protect your pet is lost once the programme has lapsed but this which we give via intranasal drops (it’s cleverly isn't so. Restoring your pet’s protection is safe sprayed up the nose!) If your dog has a social life and easy so pop along to see us soon; dogs, cats and rabbits welcome too. Wishing you and your to be jealous of, ie attends puppy or agility pet well this autumn... classes, races round the park with friends, or regularly goes to a grooming parlour, he is at increased risk of picking up the infection.

Bredon Hill Bikeaway

F

ollowing the success of the Team GB cyclists at this year’s London Olympics, why not dust off your helmet, pump up your tyres, and get ready for the Bredon Hill Bikeaway on Sunday October 21st October? We are excited to announce our new venue this year - Pershore College, the regional centre for the Royal Horticultural Society. Cyclists and their families will have the opportunity to explore the college grounds, visit their plant centre, talk to some representatives about educational facilities within the college and also experience local produce in the cafeteria. The official start is at 9.30am when the Divisional Vice President Mr Henry Sandon MBE (of Antiques Roadshow fame) will cut the ribbon and send cyclists on their way. The Bikeaway offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the local countryside and enjoy all that cycling has to offer. The carefully planned routes provide delightful autumnal views, with outstanding sights of Bredon Hill and its surrounding villages. Furthermore, by taking part you can help raise vital funds to support the life-saving work of St John Ambulance. This year, celebrating the success of the Olympics, there are three suggested routes to accommodate all ages and capabilities. Themed Bronze, Silver and Gold, they enable cyclists to look upon the Worcestershire countryside at some of the best viewpoints available locally. You can enjoy some remarkable sights, open countryside and views of the distant Cotswolds.

Refreshments are provided along the routes and a support vehicle will be on hand if required. Each cyclist will be provided with a sponsor form, a great way to raise extra money through family and friends. The Bikeaway, which is now in its 6th year, is one of the leading annual fundraising events for the Pershore Division of St John Ambulance. All monies raised goes towards administering first aid and the provision of training programmes. St John Ambulance is funded only by duty fees and fund raising - each member is a volunteer taking time out of their own life in order to help save the lives of others. Please come along and take part, to support St John Ambulance, and enable them to support you!! Tony Haines, Divisional Superintendant of St. John Ambulance said “We look forward to meeting old and new friends from far and wide at this year’s Bikeaway – all members of the Pershore Division are so grateful for the tremendous efforts that everyone puts in to this event, and also for the generous donations that people make – See you on the 21st October ?!” The cost to enter the Bikeaway is £8 for adults and £5 for children or you can buy a Family ticket (2 adults + 2 children) for just £20. If you wish to join in with this years’ event, please register today. For an application form please contact Angela Tidmarsh on 01386 565373 or email angela.tidmarsh@wychavon.gov.uk

Taking The Pain Out Of Your MOT Eddie's Autos is a small, Beckford based garage run by Ed Robinson. After over twenty years in the trade, Ed set up his own garage to offer a friendly, knowledgeable service at a competitive price.

S

o many people dread their MOT, fearing a big bill that they can’t afford. Customers hate it when they feel they’ve been ripped off so I’ve been careful to structure my business with fair, honest service as the cornerstone. Please be reassured that MOT’s are not a money-making scheme but a simple annual check on the condition of your car to ensure that it meets minimum safety standards. The best way to avoid a big bill is to have an annual service but did you realise that for £25+VAT you can get a Pre-MOT Check? It’s an MOT without the legal papers and will give you notice of any work required so that you can plan ahead. I offer MOT tests on the premises and have the equipment to fix almost anything. I won’t work on your car until you have a quote and will only ever suggest fixing something if it really needs to be done. Why not drop in, call or email and give us a try?

With our network of organic farmers, it’s all grown as close as possible to where it is eaten. It’s no longer just about veg; we have an award-winning Dairy, a Farm Shop, Kitchen and Bakery, the Meat Box business and the Field Kitchen restaurant. To place an order you can ring us or visit our website. Many customers set up a default

delivery; there is no tie-in and it can be reviewed at any time to suit. Most households take a box weekly or fortnightly but we’re happy to deliver less often. There are great value boxes to suit every family size and budget. If you prefer to select a’ la Carte you can; all we ask is for a minimum £12.50 spend. Each Friday we’ll drop you an email predicting the contents of next week’s boxes and you have until 10pm on Monday to respond by phone or online. Pay by cheque or securely online and in this area, our reliable deliveries arrive on a Wednesday. You don’t even need to be at home, just tell us where to leave it. This autumn, why not try us with a Small Vegbox - now 50% off - just £5.99.*

Personal Security Tips

PURSE

Simple tips to follow when out enjoying your shopping are:  While out and about, be vigilant and stay aware of who is around you.  Securely fasten handbags, purses and wallets.  Keep your purse or wallet in an inside coat or jacket pocket.  Never leave your bags unattended.  Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.  Never keep pin numbers with your bank cards.  Always be particularly mindful to keep your wallet secure if you have been using an ATM cash machine - someone may have been watching you, so be mindful of this if you are approached by a stranger immediately afterwards.

Thefts While crime remains relatively low across West Mercia, it’s sensible to remain vigilant when it comes to personal security. Here, West Mercia Police suggest ways to help keep your personal belongings safe this autumn.

Keep It Safe - Don't Make Your Purse A Gift For Dippers! Police have issued tips to help avoid people's purses and valuables becoming a gift to criminals. The simple measures to deter and prevent thieves taking advantage of shoppers have been issued as part of West Mercia Police's Safe & Secure campaign. Jim Baker, West Mercia's Chief Inspector responsible for Community Safety and Partnerships, said: "Although crime is low in West Mercia, busy shoppers can become a target for opportunistic thieves and unsecured bags, wallets and purses can be easy pickings. “By following the simple advice people can ensure their valuables do not become a gift to criminals."

Got an Issue? Communities can play an active role in the fight against crime by providing us with valuable information about what is happening in your area. If you have any information or concerns you can raise them by:  calling 101 to speak to your local

police team  calling Crimestoppers on 0800

555111 to report information anonymously. You can also visit our website:

One You Missed... FINDING YOUR INNER OLYMPIAN For the ultimate escape from everyday pressures there’s nothing to beat a quiet hour in the company of a really great book. But what to read? This summer gave us a raft of new role models; personalities who have reached inward to find a goal, committed to it and found meaning. Here, we offer three different books, all about personal development.

QUIET BY SUSAN CAIN

TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE BY MITCH ALBOM

Are you often left exhausted by the constant stimulation of the twenty first century? If so, this book is for you. Subtitled The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, it champions the cause of those who secretly prefer closed doors, intimate conversations and regular doses of solitude to open plan living, small talk and a round of parties. Including suggestions about how to thrive in a world dominated by the extrovert ideal, it is refreshing, insightful, and practical.

Have you been lucky enough to find a mentor who has been important in your life? Finding an older person we can look up to can be so enriching. As a young man, Mitch Albom was inspired by his college professor He lost track of him but years later he got a second chance at learning when they renewed their relationship in the last few months of the old man’s life. This memoir is a record of their final ‘class,’ a chronicle of their life together and a set of lessons for us all in how to live.

THE DIVING BELL & THE BUTTERFLY BY JEAN DOMINIQUE BAUBY After suffering a massive stroke, the author of this extraordinary memoir, a former journalist and father of two young children, found himself paralysed and unable to speak. In order to give us his insights into his new, ‘locked-in’ world, he ‘dictated’ the content by blinking it out, letter by letter, using only his left eyelid. Highly readable and universally acclaimed this book is profound, poetic and inspiring. Life will never look the same after reading it.

Did you know that you can insulate your home for free* through the Council funded loft and cavity wall insulation scheme? The scheme ends in December this year so you need to act now. We found out more from Gareth Williams, Project Officer at local helpline, Warmer Worcestershire.

W

ith the colder months of the year approaching and household fuel prices at an all time high, Warmer Worcestershire recommends that homeowners and those in private rented accommodation act now to benefit from the Councils’ Free Loft & Cavity Insulation schemes. With all grants for loft & cavity wall insulation ending in December 2012 this will be the last opportunity to apply for these and other government backed schemes. Across the whole of the Wychavon and Malvern districts the Council are offering home owners and those in private rented accommodation the

opportunity to have insulation installed for free, so if you have up to 6 inches or less of existing loft insulation you could be entitled to a free top up. If your property is suitable for cavity wall insulation this could be installed for free as well.*All are subject to a free survey by the Council’s appointed contractor. Why insulate my loft? Did you know that up to 25% of the heat you generate within the home could be lost through an un-insulated loft? Under the Council scheme you could have 270mm (approx 10.5 inches) of loft insulation. In an average home around 25% of the heat you pay for is

lost through the roof. Increasing your loft insulation can reduce your heating bills by up to 20%. In order to make homes retain more heat, Building Regulations require all new homes to have the equivalent of 270mm of insulation fitted between and over the ceiling joists. Adding more insulation in your loft space will keep the heat you generate from your heating system inside your house. If you want to provide a floor to your loft for storage it is important that you don't compress the insulation or it will lose its effectiveness. A good way of spotting a well insulated home is when there is frost or snow on the roof. If it
