…to Spring. What a lovely phrase that is, with its promise of a vivid, fresh green world. A chance to start over. The idea of renewal has popped up repeatedly in the last few weeks. In many ways, 2012 was a difficult year and this period of austerity is not over yet. However, many local professionals report a growing number of people who are keen to move their projects forward, despite the challenges of the economy. Whether that means; moving house, committing to a charity challenge or renovating your back garden, we can help you access a range of local experts and organisations who can help. This issue, we have taken Homes and Gardens as our theme. We also bring you a regular new Competition in conjunction with The Roses. Our thanks go to the team there who are offering five lucky readers the chance to win a pair of tickets to a show. Entering is easy so why not take two minutes to see if you can win? Be sure, also, to take a look at this season’s money-off vouchers, helping you to make savings where you can. Whatever you have planned this Spring, we’d like to know about your projects, events and new ideas; maybe we can help them gain ground? Keep in touch by calling me on 01684 773135 or emailing lisa@lifeinthevillage.co.uk Until next time...

ST RICHARD’S Expanding hospice will improve care still further
Here: Architect’s Image Right: St Richard’s Hospice
Plans to redevelop and extend the In-patient Unit at St Richard’s Hospice will allow the charity to care for over a third more patients in Wildwood Drive, Worcester, in the future.
T
he changes will also mean St Richard’s can improve the experiences of patients and their families by offering greater privacy in single rooms. The plans will see St Richard’s build four new bedrooms and change the configuration of existing rooms to give 13 single rooms and two double rooms. They are also building a second family sitting room, therapies room, satellite nurse station, IPU Manager's office, case conference room and doctor’s room. The project will cost £1.4m and after careful consideration St Richard’s feels able to embark on this development, particularly as the Department of Health (DOH) is awarding £60m to hospices in the UK for capital projects. The charity has applied for the maximum award of £750,000 and are optimistic that they will receive good news in March. The remaining funds will be met from some generous Gifts in Wills as well as from Grant Making Trusts and hospice reserves. Chief Executive Mark Jackson explained, “Our feedback from
patients and their families is always very positive but after a detailed survey we realised that changing to mainly single rooms will radically improve the privacy and dignity of a patient. “The increase in single bedrooms will enable us to care for more patients. The detailed audit carried out by the clinical staff suggests that we will be able to take up to 74 more admissions each year. The two double rooms will also be able to be sub divided into four single rooms if required. We are using the money wisely by building in the capacity to convert two more rooms to single rooms should the need arise in the future, giving us the potential capacity of caring for 19 patients.” Mr Jackson added, “Single rooms are more popular with patients and families and we believe our extra bed availability will help prevent inappropriate admissions to the NHS Acute or
Community Hospitals. Many of our patients’ conditions are very complex and we will be able to offer more compassionate, attentive and individual care.” One of the bedrooms will be a double-bedded family room so a patient and family members can stay together overnight. Building work is due to start in June for completion in April 2014. Mr Jackson said, “We are building for our future and thank everyone for your continued support.”

Property Talk With Denise James, Director of Gusterson Palmer & James

013 has started positively and we have already seen an increase in new properties coming to the market which will encourage more viewings over the coming weeks. Property owners looking to sell their homes can increase their chances of achieving a sale by following a few guidelines: 1.Price Realistically. Take advice from an Estate Agent with years of local experience who will be aware of buyer’s expectations. Prospective purchasers can now easily access information about past and similar property prices. If market values haven’t risen any increase may need to be justified by evidence of work carried out or improvements made. Address any issues that may make buyers worry about hidden costs. Service the boiler and other appliances regularly and keep all receipts and guarantees safe. Consider the full costs of your move, including estate agents fees, solicitors fees, removal quotes, any mortgage redemption charges, onward purchase costs and the availability of any mortgage funds required.
2.Present your property well. First impressions definitely count. Do prepare your property for marketing before photographs are taken and before each viewing. Imagine yourself in the viewer’s shoes! Declutter and carry out minor maintenance jobs; clean and ventilate your home rather than masking any pet odours. 3.Ensure your agent works hard! Erect a For Sale board and check your agent uses major online marketing portals such as rightmove.co.uk & zoopla.co.uk. Get feedback after each viewing and utilise their negotiating skills. The directors here have over 40 years experience locally. Our team has an excellent sales record with customer service being a high priority. Visit our 16th Annual Specialist Plant Fair Sunday 21st April £5 11am –5pm
Spetchley Park Gardens … opening March 22nd Henry Berkeley launches the 2013 season.
T
his Spring come and enjoy one of Britain’s best kept secrets, right on your doorstep! Surrounded by glorious countryside, the beautiful garden of Spetchley Park is virtually hidden from the road; you could be forgiven if you have missed it so far. Largely unaltered in the last century, this lovely 30 acre Victorian paradise, has been nurtured by successive generations of my family and remains a beautiful, unspoilt space. With good Disabled and Pushchair access, it’s a bolthole for family members of all ages to relax. Take a stroll through the winding paths of the grounds, play games in the wide open spaces or explore the deer park. Later, you can relish a delicious lunch or afternoon tea in the Old Laundry Tea Rooms If you are a gardener, Spetchley is fascinating, boasting an enviable collection of plant treasures from every corner of the globe, including one of the finest and biggest private collections of peonies. In March and April, clumps of wild primrose push up through sapphire carpets of crocus and give way to swathes of sunny daffodils. In summer, ancient borders of blowsy perennials and tender exotics create a palette of pink and red, later turning to fiery shades of orange and ochre.
From the first glimpse of the garden, across the magnolia-fringed Horse Pool, back round to the entrance through the Melon Yard with its delicious olives and pineapple-scented flowers, this is a garden of surprises. A place of contrasts, where formal clipped hedges, rose beds and sweeping lawns meet tumbling herbaceous borders and walls festooned with rampant climbers. Expert Advice on caring for a puppy from Vet Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens, Tewkesbury and Bishops Cleeve.
I
n December, after a lot of thinking, planning and preparation, my family were lucky to be joined by an eight week old Working Cocker Spaniel whom the boys have called, ‘Muddy.’ Our experience so far has been happy, if a bit manic. The thing I can most liken it to is bringing a new baby home and many of you will know what that means... Sadly, as a Vet, I see many dogs and owners who are not living happily ever after. Any dog, but especially a puppy that needs house training, requires a huge commitment of time, money and energy. So what’s the best way to ensure a successful result? Firstly, think, think and
think again. If you’ve not owned a dog before it’s probably more work than you imagine. Do your research, visit our website, then make an appointment at one of our complimentary Nurse Clinics where you can ask any questions and get expert prepurchase advice. Three things really matter; the initial and ongoing cost, the amount of exercise the dog will need and the suitability of the breed to your lifestyle. A bored, housebound dog is more likely to misbehave and this is when problems come in. Consider re-homing an older dog from a Rescue Centre or ask us for a list of reputable

Improve Your Home Efficiency... Are you alarmed by the size of your winter fuel bills at home or work? The Government’s new 'Green Deal' scheme enables you to make your home or business premises more energy efficient. Local Energy Assessor and Green Deal advisor, Robin Evans of Avonvale Solutions, explains.
A
s fuel bills continue to rise, energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important. Many people now know that all buildings, whether residential or commercial, must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) if they are being newly built, let out or sold. We are now seeing more enquiries from customers eager to reduce fuel bills by making a variety of energy efficiency improvements. We can help you assess your eligibility for the new ‘Green Deal' scheme. This Government initiative enables you to take out a loan against the cost of improving the energy efficiency of your home and/or business, to be paid off through your electricity bills. The 'Golden Rule' is that loan repayments must not be greater than the cost of savings made, so in effect it is a Pay As You Save model. However, some improvements may be
available for free, not only for people in receipt of benefits but for those in homes or business premises which are built of solid brick and have no wall insulation. Often, we can resolve your energy efficiency queries with a simple phone call. If not, we will visit to assess your property, providing reliable, up to date advice and independent quotes. As well as advising on energy efficiency and feed-in tariffs for solar panel energy, we can help homeowners, landlords and estate agents meet the complex legislation surrounding EPC’s. Did you know, for example, that since January, Listed buildings have been made exempt? It is important that property owners remain on the right side of the law. To find out more about how we can help you please call me, Robin Evans, on 01386 561490 or email me at avs-epc@inbox.com

New Season!
KEEP CALM & CARRY ON GARDENING The team at Tewkesbury Garden Centre offer their advice

012 was a challenging year for gardeners and who knows what the elements will bring this season? In the face of uncertainty, it’s all about clever gardening or rather, learning the tricks of the trade. With knowledge accumulated over 30 years, we can help you prepare for every gardening eventuality. Fed up with the spiralling cost of food? Last years’ rain adversely affected many crops, particularly root vegetables, which have hugely increased in price. This, plus the very real satisfaction linked to Growing Your Own, is creating an expanding number of people who are planting vegetables in their garden. Sure, the weather adds to the challenge but there is
a lot you can do to ensure you achieve a good crop, rain or shine. Sticking to proven cultivars produced by reputable growers like Suttons is one way. Another is to raise vegetables in containers, where you can easily regulate the amount of water and nutrients they receive. This March, why not have a go at planting potatoes in a potato sack? Like a tomato bag, its small size makes it ideal for a patio or balcony. Designed to provide the perfect environment for vigorous growth, it will also

Last term, the Music Department at Prince Henry’s High School, Evesham raised £2.5k towards their forthcoming Music Tour to Austria & Bavaria. Could your event benefit from their talent and support them?
H
e knows they can do it. Not everyone would share Phill Bullas’ confidence that a group of 60 state educated teenagers could sing sufficiently well to perform in Salzburg Cathedral, but on 21st July, a
group of 14-18 year olds from Prince Henry’s High School will do just that. It’s not a goal for the faint hearted; this prestigious venue is usually out of bounds to young people and amateurs, but having heard a CD recording, the authorities there have granted
permission. This summer sees the third tour that Prince Henry’s High School has undertaken in conjunction with Music Europa. In 2009 a group travelled to France and two years ago, they toured northern Italy, the highlight then being the opportunity to sing Mass at St Mark’s Basilica, Venice. “It requires me to be a tough taskmaster,” said Phill Bullas, “Week on week, a huge amount of energy and drive goes into multiple rehearsals which produce such a high standard of music at Prince Henry’s.” As Head of Music, he is supported by his deputy, Naomi Heywood and thirteen peripatetic assistants. 75 pupils are currently studying GCSE Music and 12 have gone

on to A’ level. Of these, several are also taking Grade exams to the highest level. The results of such talent and commitment is well received by audiences; the popularity of their biannual musical and other events is such that the waiting list for the last Carol Concert ran to 70 names. The students are divided into various ensembles including Chamber Choir, Massed Voices, Orchestra, Big Band, Jazz Group, Barber and Barbie Shops. Membership overlaps and several of these groups are run by students bearing testimony to their musicality and motivation. Several students regularly perform at public and private
functions. Every year, the Jazz Group plays on the main stage at Upton Jazz Festival. For the last three years, 17 - 20 lads in the Barber Shop have performed in Sing Up at the Symphony Hall. Last Christmas, members of the Chamber Choir sang at the Chipping Campden Hotel and for local W.I groups. Funds raised are gratefully received and help offset the high cost of the tour which falls to parents. Fladbury CE First School Welcomes A New Headteacher A report from Governor Pam Stubbs
F
ladbury has welcomed a number of new 3+ pupils to the school this term as well as a brand new Headteacher, Ms Julie Wilson. Julie is already settling in well and says “I am delighted to take up this post at Fladbury, having previously been Assistant Head at Bredon Hancocks First School. I am already thoroughly enjoying Fladbury and am spending much of my time in the classrooms working alongside the staff and children. They are all a super bunch with a very positive attitude to learning and I am confident that working together we will have an extremely successful school.” Julie’s drive and vision have
already made a difference with a range of new after school clubs being introduced. These include modern foreign languages, film club, arts and crafts, football and eco-warriors. Parents have also been welcomed into school with a ‘work alongside your child’ afternoon when they will have the opportunity to find out what their child is learning and attempt a few spellings and other educational challenges! They can also take part in a new informal parents’ chat group, which will be held monthly, when parents will be able to discuss various ideas and initiatives to help shape the future of the school. Fladbury CE First School occupies a beautiful rural setting in the centre of the picturesque riverside village of Fladbury, midway between Evesham and Pershore. The catchment area includes the villages of Fladbury, Lower Moor and Wyre Piddle. Fladbury School has just launched it's Foundation Year for children 3+. The school is part of the Pershore pyramid with children progressing to St Nicholas CE Middle School and then onto Pershore High School. If you would like to find out more about our school please call the School Office on 01386 860301 to make an appointment to come and look round.

HEATING
& Oil Theft
Do you use oil or diesel to heat your home? Theft from tanks is currently an issue locally. Here, West Mercia Police offer their advice.
T
heft of heating and diesel oil has been a problem for many years and this crime often increases whenever the price of crude oil increases. A rise in the price of fuel at the petrol pump inevitably leads to a rise in the cost of heating oil. This makes oil an attractive proposition for thieves and they are now actively targeting fuel tanks at farms, transport depots and domestic properties in the Wychavon area. These tanks contain thousands of pounds worth of oil and it therefore makes good sense to take a few precautions to protect them. Remember to check your tank's oil levels on a regular basis. Where possible, install security lighting that covers your tank and the
immediate surrounding area. Put in place a cage to stop thieves being able to get access to the tank. If your tank is openly accessible to all, consider re-siting it to an area or building where it is better protected Be extra vigilant of tankers or large vehicles close to your property. Note down any suspicious vehicles' registration numbers and report them to the police. attention to the If your tank is located presence of your oil in an out-building, tank. ensure it is kept locked and secured at Deter thieves from entering your all times. property by installing Remove any empty and using lockable containers or drums gates and by from the immediate maintaining area - they could draw
