Hello... …and welcome to the May/June issue. It’s a beautiful morning as a write this; the sun is out and so are the bluebells, the lambs are racing up and down the field, and I’m immersed in work I love. It’s also the day after we all heard about the death of Peaches Geldof and as I’ve moved through the morning I’ve been trying to fathom how these things can coexist; the beauty and the pain of the world. It’s got me thinking, again, about what it is that enables us to find meaning in our lives. One way is to feel connected to others through relationships that matter; family, friends and the wider community. We’re so lucky to live in a place where community ties remain strong, demonstrated in so many ways throughout this magazine; by the traditional summer events organised to preserve the fabric of our villages; by the British Asparagus Festival and new Upton FAB Festival, both set up to celebrate local food heroes; by the campaign to build Worcestershire Breast Care Unit; and by the fantastic prizes donated for our competitions, this time by Eckington Manor, Upton FAB Festival and The Roses. It’s my privilege to bring all this together in one place and to connect you to an ever growing number of local traders and organisations. I hope you enjoy this issue and remember that you can now keep in touch with Life in the Village every day on twitter. It’s fun, easy and completely free so join in the conversation. Until next time,

Hi, We took out the above plan earlier this year having previously been with British Gas. Over the past week or so we had occasion to put your service to the test when our boiler developed an intermittent fault that resulted in it cutting out periodically. I must say that we have been delighted with the way in which the problem was handled…All in all, the level of customer service provided was exemplary and we will not hesitate to recommend the HomePlan to friends and neighbours. Kind Regards, Mr P, Winchcombe, December 2013

Keen gardeners in Ashton under Hill are working hard on their planting and pruning in time for their 37th annual Open Gardens event, which takes place on Saturday 7 th and Sunday 8 June 2014. Over 1000 visitors are expected over the weekend, arriving from all over the UK and often overseas. They will be able to enjoy strolling around over 20 varied and interesting gardens, ranging from small cottage garden plots to larger landscaped grounds. Chairman of the organising committee, John Dodge said: “Many of our visitors comment on what a warm and friendly welcome they receive and some of them come back every year because there’s always something new to see.” This year, to reflect the World Cup, the theme is ‘The Wonderful World of Plants.’ Gardeners will
highlight examples of non-native species, children from local schools will be involved and there will be an exhibition of photographs and pictures in St Barbara’s Church. If you need to rest and relax there will be several places to enjoy cream teas and other refreshments. Ashton’s renowned Plantsman’s Market will be offering specimens from local nurseries at very keen prices. Admission to the event is £5 for adults, under 16’s free, which gives entry to all gardens and attractions. Parking is free and there is also a complimentary shuttle bus around the village. TEWKESBURY CLASSIC VEHICLE FESTIVAL
NEW! Craft Fayre Too The Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle festival was created for the lovers of all classic and vintage vehicles to enjoy a by-gone age of engineering. Yet today, this 100% charitable event caters for all the family, reports Ted Elwes of Tewkesbury Rotary Club.
I
f you want a great family day out this summer, mark Sunday 17th August in your diary. Our festival is unique to Tewkesbury and bigger than most other vehicle rallies that take place locally. We expect over 400 exciting and classic cars and bikes. Tewkesbury School (GL20 8LF) is a great location, within easy walking distance of town, and 200 yards from M5 J9. The Festival opens at
11am. Recent entries ranged from a 1904 Peugeot Open Tourer to a De Lorean and a Jensen Healey. A special visitor last year was a pre war Rolls Royce Phantom 11, (pictured) now owned by Roger Head of Highnam. The son of the original owner, a Swiss banker, was re-united with the car at the Festival. When you’ve had your fill of cars and bikes the Heywood sisters will be singing the favourite period songs you love. There are fine teas, cakes, burgers and hot dogs plus a licensed bar, over 120 trade stands and market stalls, selling everything from auto-jumble parts to jewellery, crafts and furniture. Please visit our website to find out more.
www.tewkesburycvf.org
Sunday 17th August Craft Stalls Wanted! Do you run a craft business, producing anything from jewellery to jam? Last year we started a successful “market” area including 80 pitches taken by craftsmen and women producing a huge variety of goods. With good weather, more than 1000 people passed through the gate to see the classic cars & bikes and visit the craft market. This year, we are offering 3m x 3m pitches plus a car space for £17.50 each. Craft stall holders will be grouped near to food and drink. Stalls are offered on a first come, first served basis so book early to secure the best location. To book your pitch please call us at on 01684 850940 / 07976 950856 or send an email via the ‘trade stand’ page on our website www.tewkesburycvf.org
Classic Car/Bike Owners Bring your classic car or bike and gain free entrance for the driver. Register on our website or mark the date in your diary and just come along on the day. Classic car owners who want to be sited together should arrive together. Those erecting gazebos etc. are advised to come early. All proceeds will go to ROTARY charities.

SECURITY marking West Mercia police offer advice on how to secure your belongings.
S
ecurity marking valuable items will discourage burglars from stealing them by making it difficult to sell them on. It will also help the police to ensure they are returned to you if they are stolen but subsequently found. You should mark your property with your postcode and the number and name of your house. You can security mark property in a number of ways as follows: Permanent Marking using an engraving tool and a stencil Invisible Marking using an ultra violet (UV) pen to write on your details. The ink when dried is almost invisible to the human eye but shows up under special light. UV pen markings tend to fade over time, so it is best to reapply every six months. Forensic marking using DNA technology to mark property with a special code which is unique to the owner, allowing property to be easily identified. This online checking service is used by all UK police forces to trace owners of lost and stolen property. In addition Immobilise is checked daily by a huge range of recovery agencies and lost property offices. As a direct result of Immobilise there are over 250 cases a week where property is returned or information collected that assists the police in investigating criminal activity involving stolen goods. Should you have any items stolen, you will find it easier to deal with insurance companies as well.

HEALTH CHOICES An introduction to the Gynaecological team at The Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital with, left to right, Consultants Mark Whittaker, Philip Kaloo and Rob Gornall.
T
he Menstrual Disorders Clinic at the Nuffield Hospital is run by three highly experienced Consultant Gynaecologists with an interest in sensitively and effectively managing problematic periods. We are all UK qualified and trained and between us have more than 30 years consultant experience. Our team, with the support of experienced nursing staff, are able to manage all aspects of investigating and treating period problems from simple reassurance to medical or surgical treatments. All three of us consultants are accredited advanced hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgeons. Every woman’s menstrual cycle is unique and usually causes no problems. However, more than a third of women experience irregular, heavy or painful periods at some stage in their lives. This can have negative effects on work,
social or sex lives. Women often feel that they have to ‘just put up with it,’ but in fact, a range of treatments are available. Many women are worried they may have a gynaecological cancer. Our clinic allows rapid screening and exclusion or diagnosis of pre-cancerous and cancerous conditions. The clinic runs 3 times a week. At the initial appointment the consultant will take a medical history from you then, depending on it, suggest one or more ways of investigating the problem. These may include a cervical smear, colposcopy, pelvic ultrasound, outpatient hysteroscopy or MRI scans. The various treatment options will be discussed with you which can include simple reassurance or medical treatments, non-hormonal or hormonal treatments including a Mirena coil™, removal of endometrial

Four simple stages to
Reach Your Financial Goals We all have goals in life. Small goals, big goals; goals for ourselves, goals for our children. A dream home, a comfortable retirement, a holiday bolthole, a private education for our kids, a nest egg for our grandchildren or a special holiday. Local Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) Paul Urmston explains how to meet them. Stage 1 Define Your Goals Sounds easy - but it isn’t just about the amount of money you need, it’s about the amount of time available to reach the goal. Identifying each of these will help you shape the journey in your head; for example; what age will your children be when they start their private education; when do you want to retire? Stage 2 Quantify Your Goals This requires research and information. If you want a big

will be measured and recorded against your plan. The plan will be based on an objective analysis of the full financial marketplace and products available, a service that only an Independent Financial Adviser can provide.
Stage 3 Make Your Plan This is where the knowledge and expertise of your Independent Financial Adviser are essential. They will work on putting together a plan which addresses these needs and is tailored to reaching these targets. Whether the course of action is investing a lump sum or making regular savings out of your income, this
Stage 4 Review Your Progress With such important goals, it’s imperative that progress is constantly assessed, with key milestones marked, and the plan amended accordingly. Whatever the course of action, it will be with your best interests at heart. To make the first step call 01905 423302 today to arrange an initial meeting at my expense.

Why We All Need Worcestershire
Breast Care Unit
We talked to the Worcestershire Breast Care Team, Consultants Steven Thrush, Rachel Bright-Thomas & Michelle Mullan about their vital work.
What is the purpose of the new breast care unit? It will give us a suitable setting in which to care for the one in three women in the County who will need to see a breast care specialist at some point in their life. One in eight women and one in 1000 men will develop this disease in their lifetime. In Worcestershire, that equates to 600 people diagnosed with breast cancer every year. The scale of this illness is such that it affects us all; ourselves, our families or our friends. Everybody knows somebody.
How are patients currently cared for? We have a specialist team providing excellent care but we desperately need dedicated space and facilities to develop new and more efficient services. Currently, breast patients in Worcestershire share crowded clinics with other services; can’t have all the investigations on their first assessment, making return visits necessary; have to visit services across several floors of the hospital, with repeated queuing, dressing and undressing; do not receive
radiography results immediately; are often referred out of the County and have a much more time-consuming and stressful experience than they need to. Most people who come fear they have cancer so, whatever their results, the process is frightening. Everyone with symptoms needs rapid and thorough assessment and those with breast cancer require the most efficient and stream-lined care possible. What is your vision? We already have a site for the new

Unit (pictured above) which will be at based at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital. It will provide rapid efficient assessment and care; treatment in welcoming and private surroundings; facilities that will maximise the skills of our specialist teams; fewer return visits; good news delivered swiftly; space for complementary therapies and support group meetings; counselling rooms for reflection and discussion; new clinical equipment, including an ultrasound machine for sole use by the breast unit and highresolution imaging screens; flexible space for use by support groups as well as other patient activities and a prosthesis fitting room.

How the ‘Green’ Skip Company
GETS IT SORTED Evesham based waste management company Budget Skips have recently invested in a huge indoor facility which now enables them to recycle up to 90% of waste brought onto site. We found out more about how the process works. Why have you invested so heavily in recycling? There’s a huge demand for skips from householders, builders and businesses. We offer various sizes and terms to suit and can usually deliver them within 24 hours. It works well but as a business and a community we have to find a way to manage our waste and also take care of the environment. Landfill is the most expensive of all waste products in every regard so our expansion and investment programme fulfils our wish to be at the forefront of the industry which is why are known as the ‘green’ skip company. It also enables us to offer the lowest rates possible. The public only see our skips travelling on lorries but there is a great deal more going on back at our Honeybourne base.
Gardeners! Did You Know? We supply high grade topsoil to BS3882:2007
out anything that can be recycled which includes some paper and plastics, cardboard, metal, hardcore and some PVCu. Stringent rules affect each of these materials so we process them accordingly.
Get it Sorted! Specialists in skip

What products do you create? Cardboard is baled and exported. Hardcore and bricks are processed though our massive crusher to produce two sizes of stone, 30mm and 75mm, much of which is used back in the construction industry as a substitute for quarried stone. We also produce recycled topsoil which is screened and processed. We’re proud that, having been analysed, our highest grade topsoil has been found to meet British Standard 3882:2007. Gardeners and local What happens when a skip arrives? fortunate that in May of last year, we were invited to one of the Garden Parties at Buckingham Palace in recognition of POD’s. What have been the highlights? Over the years PODS have been able to build their own steps up to heaven for ‘Carousel’, an actual showboat for the production, ‘Showboat’ and a ship for ‘Anything Goes’; all engineered and put together by Stuart and the crew. One of the things that people still talk about today was the golden coach that flew down from the ceiling in Cinderella’ (1992). What productions are you working on for this year? In February PODY’s performed the musical The Pajama Game which was directed by Chris Love and performed at No8 during half term. This summer, from 2nd to 7th High School and over the years, June, we’ll be performing the rehearsals have taken place in musical, ‘Pickwick.’ This follows various locations. 25 years and on from our success in the panto 63 shows later, PODS is still Robin Hood last December. BREDON HILL
JOIN US ON Sunday 4th May 10am-5pm Tiddesley Wood Open Day, Pershore
Photo: Bredon Hill; Mike MacFarlane
The imposing stature of Bredon Hill is familiar to all who live in its shadow. But are you as familiar with the abundant wildlife that resides there? Wendy Carter of WWT explains more.
B Linnet Karen Summers
Veteran Tree Harry Green
redon Hill is one of the most important sites for wildlife in the county and parts of it are designated as a Special Area of Conservation; giving it European protection. In fact, it’s the fourth best site in the UK for something most of us will never see; small insects! These rely on the veteran trees scattered across the surviving ancient parkland; with the hedgerows they are home to more than 100 of the UK’s rarest or most scarce species. Exactly what age a tree becomes ‘veteran’ depends on the species but it’s basically when it is old enough to be hollow or contain rotting heartwood. Veterans – and Bredon has many of them – are important for fungi, lichens, beetles and insects. Hollow and
rotting trees are, of course, also brilliant for roosting bats and nesting birds. Trees aside, Bredon Hill is significant because of the mix of habitats found there; green woodpeckers feed on ants in the grassland; butterflies and bees rely on bramble in the hedgerows whilst common whitethroat and linnet breed in the scrub and small bushes. This mix also helps to provide food and shelter for rare and uncommon birds when they’re flying between breeding and wintering grounds; look out for dotterel, ring ouzel, whinchat, wheatear and more. So next time you go for a walk up Bredon Hill, perhaps you’ll think about all the things you can’t see as well as those you can!
