Hello... …and welcome to the autumn issue. Fresh into a new school year, there’s part of me that’s still getting used to the shape that my life will take over the next few months. After a long, warm summer October can bring a sense of being bound by things beyond our control; financial responsibilities, the demands of the term time calendar, all that darkness and the difficult weather. The solution? Grab every hour you can and make it feel like it belongs to you. Here are a few things I’m looking forward to this season:  making pies  lighting a daily fire  watching the leaves turn astounding shades of red and gold  bottling a batch of Sloe Gin  dividing up my plants to get new ones for free  strolling through an arboretum  visiting the Cheltenham Literature Festival  finding a coat that will (at last!) keep me warm on the touchline  catching up with friends at Half Term  staring at a night sky full of fireworks. Living here in the countryside, so close to Nature, it’s easy for all of us to extract the best from every season. Here’s wishing you an enjoyable autumn. Until next time,

JOHNSTON SCOTIA Scott Johnston - MD

A simple Carbon Monoxide Detector could save your life. Have you got one and have you checked it recently?

Autumn means the big ‘switch on’ of all our heating appliances. But can you be certain that yours are safe? Here, M.D. Scott Johnston explains how installing a Carbon Monoxide detector can give you peace of mind. HOW CAN I ENSURE MY HOME IS GAS SAFE THIS AUTUMN? Boilers, gas fires, ovens, flues and stoves which have been badly installed, incorrectly repaired or neglected can produce Carbon Monoxide, a highly poisonous gas which can cause sudden death as well as serious and long term health problems. Since you can’t see it, taste it or smell it, Carbon Monoxide often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. The simple solution is to get your home gas safety checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. It’s also a good idea to install a Carbon Monoxide detector, similar to a

Bredon Hill Bikeaway

I

t’s that time of year again, grab your bike, dust off your helmet, pump up your tyres and get ready for the Bredon Hill Bikeaway on Sunday 13th October. The Bikeaway is running for the 7th consecutive year raising money for the Pershore Division of St John Ambulance. The Bikeaway kicks off from Pershore College, the regional centre for the Royal Horticultural Society. This venue gives visitors the opportunity to explore the College grounds, visit the plant centre and also experience local produce in the cafeteria. Registration will start at 9am and close at 11am. From Pershore College, cyclists have a choice of taking one of three routes designed to accommodate all ages and capabilities. Whether you choose the Bronze (8 mile), Silver (19 mile) or Gold (49 mile) route you are guaranteed to look upon the Worcestershire countryside at spectacular view points. The routes are designed to provide delightful autumnal views and cyclists are sure to experience breath-taking sights of Bredon Hill and the local countryside while raising money for such a fantastic

cause. Cyclists will be provided with refreshments along their travels of the open countryside and a support vehicle will be on hand if required. The Bikeaway is one of the major annual fundraising events for the Pershore Division of St John Ambulance. All monies raised goes towards administering first aid and the provision of training programmes. St John Ambulance is funded only by duty fees and fundraising - each member is a volunteer taking time out of their own life in order to help save the lives of others. Angela Tidmarsh, Secretary of St John Ambulance said “We are looking forward to another successful Bikeaway and greatly appreciate the efforts and donations put into this event. We hope everyone joins in and has a fantastic day!” The cost to enter the Bikeaway is £8 for Adults, £5 for Children, or you can buy a Family ticket (2 Adults + 2 Children) for just £20. If you are interested in attending this years’ event please register today. Each cyclist will be provided with a sponsor form, a great way to raise extra money through family and friends.

As cat owners, we know just how particular cats can be about things, & how stressed they can become.

ore so than other animals, cats are highly susceptible to stress which not only causes health problems but can delay recovery times. As part of our commitment to offer the best feline medical services possible, we’ve recently reconsidered the way we structure our appointments. The team here recognise that cats aren’t small dogs and as such have specific behavioural & medical needs. Many cat owners will appreciate, and we see at first hand, how scary it can be for some cats to visit the vets. A cat box, a car journey and the prospect of having to share a waiting room with dogs can be almost traumatic for some of our more nervous patients, especially if they are not accustomed to contending with dogs at home. For some owners, it means a visit to the vet becomes a date

“Many thanks for your excellent workmanship. Everyone we have spoken to from Buzz Electrical have been very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.”

Prepare for Christmas with

Buzz Electrical

Did You Know?

Have you got guests staying over this Christmas? Are you throwing a party and want your home to feel festive? Would you love to light up a tree in your garden? The team at Buzz can help ensure your celebrations go smoothly. Here, M.D Steve Owens explains.

T

hey were definitely working when you put them away... but now you are kneeling beside the Christmas tree, bent over yet another set of broken fairy lights, feeling under pressure and frustrated. Sounds familiar? This year, make a plan for things to be different. Our friendly, reliable team can help with all your festive lighting, indoors and out. Now is the time to make other preparations for the holiday too; decorate the hall and lounge, think about any new light fittings, add a smoke alarm and get the spare room ready. Why not make a list of all the half finished electrical jobs you’ve been meaning to complete then call and ask us for a quote?

Home Safety Tips from BUZZ If your smoke alarm goes off regularly at the whiff of a curled up piece of toast you might be better off with a mains operated smoke detection system. This is a hard wired electrical alarm with a battery back up, including smoke detection on the landing and hallway and a heat detector in the kitchen, all linked together to give maximum protection and conforming to current fire regulations. With all the expensive batteries needed for toys and gadgets at Christmas it’s a shame to wear them out on small kitchen blunders! For more hints and tips please visit www.facebook.com/buzz electrical

We can help you prepare for the festivities by:  Decorating large trees  Installing electric heating  Lighting your path, drive or garden  Mending your cooker/ hob  Fixing new light fittings  Upgrading your fuseboard

© Many people assume that making energy saving improvements on older, listed or historic properties with solid walls is tricky but most homes offer a number of options. All you need to do is find out what‘s involved, how much it will save, prioritise them and get some quotes from approved local contractors. Gareth Williams, Project Officer at Act on Energy on behalf of Warmer Worcestershire explains.

T

here are many ways you can improve the efficiency of older properties and with grants now available for external wall insulation on solid wall properties there has never been a better time to consider how these improvements can be made. Traditionally, older solid wall properties, be they Victorian or timber framed cottages, are considered hard and expensive to treat when it comes to insulation. However, with the new grants available and a much greater understanding of how to improve these types of properties the options are now much wider.

External wall insulation is not suited to every solid wall home but there are other solutions as the recent case study opposite shows. Key Issues For Historic Homes The term ‘historic’ includes any buildings built using traditional construction methods that don't lend themselves to some of the measures available for modern homes. They may be Grade 1 or 2 listed and/or situated in a Conservation Area. This may mean the buildings appearance can’t be changed or that some measures could actually damage the building

fabric. However, for any property to be truly sustainable the space within it needs to be suitable for its use, affordable, and provide the facilities desired by the occupants. If not, then it may have no use, fall into disrepair and be lost for ever. It is therefore essential that older and historic buildings are brought up to an acceptable condition and that includes making the energy bills affordable to the owner. Some of the perceived problems hinge around aesthetics. That is a matter for the owner, or in some cases the community, but the main issue is

29 to ensure that the fabric is protected to maintain the building for as long as possible. Not all buildings last forever but while they have a useful contribution to make, they should be maintained. Traditional construction methods tend to provide greater tolerance to moisture by absorbing and releasing it to maintain a reasonably constant humidity. Some energy saving techniques may hinder this process and so the risk of an accumulation of moisture within the structure should be assessed. This does not necessarily rule them out but be aware that some additional provision may be needed.

The property is an early Victorian cottage dating from the 1800’s with solid brick walls and a pitched roof with three rooms in the roof. One of the ground floor rooms which previously suffered from cold and damp has been internally insulated with a 10mm thick flexible liner. The owner says the room is now much more comfortable. The heating system includes a high efficiency gas boiler which has been supplemented by an Evacuated Tube Solar Hot Water Panel on the south facing roof to provide around 75% of the hot water needs. RIVER Cruising

Carrick Travel are a team of like minded travellers who love to share their experiences. Pershore based agent, Paul Carter, recommends a river cruise from Cologne on the five star MS Lord Byron next spring.

M Large, Luxurious Cabins

The Panoramic Lounge

oored on the Rhine at Cologne, the Swiss operated five star MS Lord Byron is one of the largest and most luxurious European river cruise vessels afloat. Climb aboard and you are greeted by quotations from the great man himself, inscripted on the walls of the vessel. The soft leather interior and subtle colour scheme promotes a chic, calming ambience of exceptional taste. Open the door to your cabin and the elegance is immediately evident. Modern, clean and spacious the cabins (all measuring 15 square metres) include a generous seating area and the option of a ‘French Balcony’ for the best possible views. On the top ‘Diamond’ deck you’ll find a panoramic lounge with quality carpeting, a marbled tiled bar, leather armchairs and soft modern settees. Floor to ceiling windows

facilitate wonderful glimpses of the ever changing landscape as you glide past riverside villages via Bruges, Amsterdam, Volendam, Keukenhof Arhem and Antwerp. The Sun Deck and especially the forward viewing area is well equipped with comfortable outdoor chairs and sun loungers, deck games including shuffle board and giant chess, and a ‘whirlpool’ splash pool where you can cool off. The main restaurant is situated on the ‘Ruby’ deck, with cuisine of the highest order and tables mostly seating four to six. Surroundings of glass, marble and deep wool carpets make for an elegant dining experience. Throughout your cruise you can expect graceful, efficient yet unobtrusive service. With a team of 35 staff serving 140 guests an outstanding ratio of 4:1 allows time for attentive, personal touches which really do make a difference.

FRUITFUL

Words: Wendy Carter Photos: Harry Green, Frank Porch, Alan Gormley & Wendy Carter

for wildlife

You can’t fail to notice the wonderful orchards locally each spring. But have you thought about how important they are for wildlife throughout the rest of the year? Wendy Carter of WWT explains.

F Red Admiral on Bee Hotel Blackberries

Fieldfare stripping Apple Tree

ruit trees are perfect for hole -nesting and insect-eating birds and, in autumn, the windfall and unpicked fruits are important food for wildlife. What you’ll see in orchards at this time of year is, of course, dependent on our weather! Our warm summer should have ensured lots of butterflies feeding on juicy fallen fruit – Red Admirals are notorious for this. But if winter comes early, watch out for Fieldfares and Redwings – orchard fruits will be one of the first stops for these Scandinavian migrants. You may notice gnawed fruit stones on the ground where mice have tried to get at the kernel. Or you may spot woodpeckers pecking and searching for insects in the tree bark. If you’re really

keen, have a look in old orchard trees for the dropping of rare Noble Chafer Beetles (it’s about 3mm long and lozenge-shaped)! It’s a tragedy that we’ve lost about 80% of our traditional orchards in the last 50 years or so; a loss for our eyes in spring and potentially devastating to wildlife all year round. Grants are now available to help restore or create orchards or you can help manage those in our care by joining us. If you can, plant a fruit tree in your garden. Encourage your neighbours to do so too and help create a wildlife-corridor of fruit trees. If you already have trees and bushes in your garden, try to leave the windfall on the ground and don’t pick all the fruit - please leave some for your wildlife.

Property Talk With Denise James, Director of Gusterson Palmer & James

I

t’s been three months of solid good news for the housing market locally, reflecting a healthy national picture. Figures from the Office of National Statistics and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors confirm that house prices continue to rise, with the highest levels of interest seen amongst buyers in the West Midlands for 14 years. The Council of Mortgage Lenders report that lending to first-time buyers is at its highest for six years. It is no longer the case that mortgages are impossible to secure without a huge deposit. There has also been a significant take up of the Government’s Help to Buy Scheme on new homes and this is due to be extended to resale properties early in 2014. Indicators from our internal research are positive too. New instructions have remained steady but viewing figures jumped significantly in June when compared to the same month last year. This pattern was repeated during July and August, usually a quieter holiday period, was very

busy. Sales figures have increased dramatically, up 143% in June and 180% in July when compared to last year. The lower end of the market is moving rapidly and the result is a shortage of two and three bedroom properties up to £175k which are being sourced by first time buyers or buy to let landlords. A greater number of lengthy chains shows momentum is also being created in the higher price brackets. Although the market remains price sensitive there is a strong demand for properties marketed at suitable prices. Being independent and high profile* means we can respond quickly to emerging trends. Curated by Dr Sam Guglani, Clinical Oncologist at Cheltenham General Hospital, it sees the arts as elaborating this view. Through a series of events, Medicine Unboxed engages health professionals and the general public in a conversation around twenty-first century medicine. Here, Dr Sam Guglani invites you to come along, join the debate, be inspired.

T

his same question at the bedside or in clinic, voiced from doctor to doctor - stethoscope pressed firmly to skin, ears straining for heart sounds, breath sounds, any sounds. What we’re actually asking is: Did you hear anything wrong? A sensible question, given the terrain - but in pursuit of this narrow range of sounds, might we miss the complexity of medicine’s voice – hospitals and GP practices burgeoning with the sounds of fear and hope like tuning orchestras, or a patient’s words tentative like fingers at a

cello. Listen now, what are they saying? This year Medicine Unboxed gathers around the idea of VOICE – the patient’s, the health professional’s, the hallucinated and asserted, the fearful, sung, faulted, questioning and resonant. The voices of science, philosophy, music and poetry. And the faltering but insistent voice of the NHS. Our speakers are a mosaic of the subjective, complex and disparate voices that resonate within medicine. What VOICE will you add?

Advice For Residents

 You have the right to say

no to trick or treaters.  If you do not wish to take part, display the ‘Sorry No Trick or Treaters’ posters and do not open the door.  Do not open the door to anyone you do not know.  If you open the door, always use the door chain.

Safety Tips For Trick or Treaters

 Never trick or treat alone;

Staying safe this

HALLOWEEN Whatever your feelings about Halloween, follow these tips from West Mercia Police to ensure you and your family enjoy October 31st.

W

est Mercia Police is urging all those wishing to celebrate Halloween this year to respect the wishes of those in their communities who do not wish to take part and also to remain safe themselves. Residents not wishing to take part should display a specially designed ‘Sorry No Trick or Treat’ poster (pictured opposite) on their front door or window, which clearly gives the message that they do not wish to participate and will not open the door to trick or treaters.

always go with an adult  Do not talk to strangers  Stay in well-lit areas and make sure you are visible  Only go to houses where you or your friends know the residents and let them know what time you plan to call.  Do not knock on doors where there is a sign saying ‘Do not disturb’ or ‘Sorry No Trick or Treat’.

Prefer to avoid Halloween? Download your poster online or contact your local Policing Team by calling 101 or 0300 333 3000.

Top Tips For Kids  Children should not call on houses where the

posters are displayed, neither should they coldcall on strangers, as this can put young people at risk and also intimidates and upsets some householders, especially those who are elderly, living alone or who are vulnerable.  Parents may want to consider having a fancydress themed Halloween party at home with their children as an alternative to trick or treating.
