Working alongside our local communities and colleagues around the country, we continued to serve our mission in yet another unprecedented year. We faced the challenges of the continuing global pandemic, concern for social justice, and the desire to save and improve more lives again this year, while providing comfort and healing to more donors and their families. We prioritized safety and service in order to continue to serve our critical donation partners including hospitals, medical examiners, funeral homes and transplant centers. We remained nimble in our response to a constantly challenging healthcare environment and found new ways to continue our life saving work.

This report highlights the extraordinary work of our entire LifeLink team in our most recent fiscal year 2021. More donors and their families were supported through the donation process, and more organs and tissues were provided for transplantation again this year, setting new Foundation records. Yet, more work needs to be done in order to make transplantation a reality for all patients awaiting the gift of life. As always, our work is in honor and tribute to those who brought renewed life and hope to others through organ and tissue donation, whose selfless generosity and compassion make this life changing work possible. In the United States, over 106,000 individuals are waiting for a lifesaving transplant and 4,800 of those people live in the state of Florida, 4,000 in Georgia and 300 in Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, every day in the United States 17 people pass away because an organ was not available in time. During the national “Workplace Partnership for Life” Hospital Campaign, 1,647 organizations participated and contributed to adding 27,386 new registered organ and tissue donors to state registries across the country. Since its inception in 2011, the campaign has generated 575,000 registrations nationally. Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) “Workplace Partnership For Life” Hospital Campaign recognizes the efforts of hospitals that

George “Truck” Carr Family, Organ Donor Family

eorge was a 20-year Army veteran whose lifelong passion for motorcycles turned into a second career when he attended the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute following his retirement from military service. George went to work at his local Harley Davidson shop and later opened his own shop. George loved his family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand. In fact, when a friend needed a kidney transplant, George stepped forward and got tested as a living donor, although his friend received the gift of life from a deceased donor before George could complete the living donor evaluation process. Sadly, George lost his life in an accident, and when his wife, Shannon, and his daughters were approached about organ donation, there was no hesitation to say yes. George saved five lives through his gifts of donation. Shannon has met George’s liver recipient, Jimbo, who Shannon quickly realized shared George’s jokester personality. Getting to know Jimbo has helped Shannon through the grief process. Shannon said, “George’s donations give me comfort that he’s still here, living on in others. ON THE COVER: Ananya Anumukonda, Heart Recipient

nanya was a typical, friendly six-year-old little girl, who suddenly began feeling unwell and nauseous. When her symptoms didn’t subside quickly her mom, Swarna, knew something was wrong. She took Ananya to her pediatrician who immediately sent them to the hospital. Ananya was diagnosed with severe cardiomyopathy, which is an enlarged heart, and her heart function continued to decline. She was transferred to a hospital equipped to provide her with specialized care, including implantation of an LVAD, or left ventricle assist device, and she was placed on the heart transplant waiting list. Three weeks later Ananya received her lifesaving heart transplant. She enjoys painting and making bracelets, and during her recovery in the ICU she fully decorated her room with pictures. She looks forward to going to Magic Kingdom for the first time to meet Elsa and Minnie Mouse once doctors clear her to travel. Swarna is thankful for the support and encouragement of hospital staff, as well as the generosity of a donor and their family, and is happy to see her daughter continue to recover.

Public Education The Public Affairs and Multicultural Donation Education Program teams work to build public education campaigns to promote donor registration through various avenues including volunteers, social/traditional media, community partners and events. Beginning in March 2020, all in-person meetings and face-to-face public outreach opportunities were suspended as advised by CDC guidelines out of abundance of caution and for the safety of our volunteers, many who are immune suppressed as recipients. Virtual meetings and public education were implemented, and nearly 200 volunteers participated in virtual public education opportunities to champion the importance of organ and tissue donation this year.

Shining a Light on Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation During Donate Life Month, we challenged partners, community leaders and donation advocates to shine a light on organ, eye and tissue donation by changing their nighttime visible lighting to blue and green throughout the month. Our partners overwhelming display of support this April left us inspired and excited for the future. We are incredibly thankful to all participants who rallied to “Shine a Light on Organ, Tissue and Eye Donation.”

*The National Donate Life Registry (www.RegisterMe.org) launched in 2015 and is managed by Donate Life America. It allows individuals throughout the United States to register as organ, tissue and eye donors through national campaigns and the iPhone Health app. For the majority of states, Florida and Georgia included, donor registrations from the national registry are automatically funneled into the respective state donor registry where that individual resides. **In 2019, the Georgia General Assembly passed Senate Bill 99 that allows individuals to register their decision to be an organ and tissue donor when purchasing or renewing a hunting, fishing or trapping license through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources online licensing system. Audrey Bella Langston, Kidney Recipient

udrey, a newly minted police officer with the Chicago Police Department who had a baby and young teenage son at home, was on a weekend birthday trip with friends when she began experiencing a terrible headache, nausea, frequent urination and a general lethargic feeling. She cut her trip short but on the way home, Audrey’s symptoms became alarmingly worse when she lost her ability to see. Although her blindness was temporary, doctors eventually diagnosed Audrey with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a condition that causes kidney damage. Audrey, who as a police officer kept herself in incredible shape through exercise and healthy eating, was shocked by her diagnosis. At the recommendation of doctors, Audrey implemented further lifestyle adjustments to manage her disease and was able to remain an active duty police officer until eventually she began dialysis and was placed on the waiting list for a kidney

transplant. After several potential donor opportunities fell through, Audrey’s godson, Roger, declared he wanted to become a living kidney donor and on March 4, 2005, during her birthday weekend, Audrey received her gift of life. Audrey returned to active duty for the Chicago Police Department where she served a total of 21 years until her retirement in 2014. Audrey says “Since my transplant, my greatest joy has been the things I’ve done in my volunteering. I now pay it forward to others who may not have a great support system; my volunteer work has healed me.” Audrey serves as a LifeLink volunteer, the co-chair of the Tampa General Hospital Transplant Patient Family Advocacy Council and hosts a podcast, Bella’s Hope for Healing, to bring awareness to kidney disease as well as other important topics like mental health.

Emily Paulk, Double Lung Recipient

s a young child, Emily repeatedly got pneumonia and at twoyears-old was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease, an umbrella term for scarring of lung tissue. Despite her diagnosis, Emily lived a normal childhood until she was in college and experienced breathing difficulties. She had the flu which progressed to pneumonia, and Emily’s lung function severely declined. She was placed on the waiting list for a double lung transplant and two years later, Emily received her gift of life. Throughout her transplant journey, Emily had a positive outlook and the support of her small town who rallied around her by promoting organ donation. Emily and her family were touched by the kindness of their friends and family, as well as strangers who were also rooting for her. Since her

transplant they have made it their mission to rally around others and offer a helping hand, by paying it forward. Emily is a gifted artist and studied to be an art teacher in college. While awaiting her transplant, art was something Emily could safely do at home. She paints portraits for other transplant patients, donating them for transplant fundraisers. She enjoys sharing her story on social media and with local community organizations to encourage others to register as a donor. She is grateful for her donor and says, “Every day is a blessing and I’m living for them.”

elicia was a friendly young woman whose mom, Jana, said would make friends with just about anyone, especially those who might have felt left out. While traveling home from a babysitting job, the vehicle Felicia rode in was involved in a fatal collision. Shortly before her death, Felicia discussed organ donation with her mom, so when Jana was approached about end-of-life options for Felicia, she honored Felicia’s decision to save lives through donation. Jana wrote letters to all of the recipients of Felicia’s organs and has met Ella, who received Felicia’s kidney, Brittany, who received both of Felicia’s lungs and the recipient of Felicia’s heart, Anthony. Jana feels that her daughter’s organ donation has helped heal her grief because Felicia lives on in her recipients;

r. James William Adams, III, cared deeply for his family and community. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and faithful member of his church who loved gardening with his wife, Cheryl. Cheryl said James’ purpose in life was to love everybody, which he certainly did. As a healthcare professional, James was dedicated to exercising and eating well, and it was while he was exercising at the gym in the hospital where he also worked that James unexpectedly passed away. James and Cheryl had previously discussed the importance of organ and tissue donation and both had registered to be donors at their local driver license office. Thanks to James’ decision, he impacted

n the late 1990’s Kirk was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and in the early 2000’s he began to experience issues with his heart, as well as breathing problems, which were complicated by having had chemotherapy. Doctors told Kirk he had an enlarged heart, a diagnosis which was followed by a stroke. While Kirk recovered from the stroke, which had temporarily stolen his ability to speak, his heart continued to weaken. Kirk’s weakened heart caused kidney failure and required doctors to implant an LVAD, left ventricle assist device, known also as an artificial heart. He was placed on the heart/kidney transplant waiting list. Kirk persevered through each challenge, including

his wait for transplant, with the support of his loving wife, Dee, at all times. After receiving his heart/kidney transplants, Kirk set his sights on a new goal of participation in the Transplant Games of America. Once again supported by Dee, and with the help of a family friend and local gym owner, Portia, Kirk began training in pickleball and ultimately earned a silver medal during the 2018 games as well as the bronze in cornhole. s a young girl, Melany was always full of life and energy. She enjoyed playing volleyball and cheered on the cheer squad, but due to a drastic change in her health when diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, a condition that causes an inflammation on the liver when the immune system attacks hepatic cells, Melany had to stop all physical activities that she adored. She adjusted to a new lifestyle, began treatment with medication, and continued to study and work while she also maintained a specialized diet for her condition. Still, this was not enough, and Melany’s condition deteriorated so much that

Melany, whose hobby includes being a makeup artist, married the love of her life and three weeks after the wedding received a call that a liver was a match for her. Three months after the transplant she was fully recovered and enjoyed regular activities. Melany is grateful for the person and their family that made her second chance possible, for her family that supported her throughout the journey and for her wife, who loved and cared for her. s the eldest of five children, Jacquez was a role model for his younger siblings. Marcia, Jacquez’s mom, described him as the peacemaker of the family who always had a smile on his face. Jacquez began playing football in eighth grade and continued to do so as a student in high school. In the middle of a football game, tragedy struck and Jacquez collapsed on the field. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors discovered that Jacquez suffered bleeding in his brain due to an undiagnosed condition called arteriovenous malformation, or AVM; a condition so rare that only 1% of the population is affected. Doctors told Marcia there was no way to prevent or predict such an event, and it could have affected Jacquez at any time. Jacquez had registered as an organ donor when he obtained his driver license, telling his mom, “I would love to be a donor one day if I can.” His family honored his decision and Jacquez saved seven

teve developed a deep appreciation for organ and tissue donors and their families through his role as a Hospital Development Liaison with LifeLink, responsible for hospital staff education about the importance of organ and tissue donation. He never imagined he would one day also have a personal connection to the families LifeLink serves. However, Steve was burned over 10 percent of his body during a controlled burn of brush at his home and received skin grafts from a tissue donor that helped heal his body. Steve marveled that months after his accident, his healing was so advanced that no one could tell which side of his

body had been injured. Initially after his accident, Steve, who is an avid outdoorsman and hunter, feared that he would not be able to do the things he loved. Since his recovery, he has been able to resume outdoor activities he enjoys. Steve thinks of Bill daily and tells their shared story at each new nurse orientation. Since his tissue transplant, Steve has a deeper love and appreciation for his job at LifeLink.

lex, the oldest son of the Heredia Lajes family, grew up like his siblings surrounded by unconditional love. He longed to follow in the footsteps of his father and become a police officer to serve his community, and his mother taught Alex the concept of Christian love and the value of giving in order to receive. When Alex renewed his driver license, he made the decision to register as an organ and tissue donor and told his mother that to not do so was “vanity of vanities,” because one should always help others. Tragically, Alex was in a fatal car accident and his family honored Alex’s decision to be a donor.

He saved and improved the quality of life of dozens of people. Today Alex’s mother, Gloria, continues the legacy of her son by volunteering with LifeLink of Puerto Rico as she shares her testimony and educates thousands about saving lives through organ and tissue donation.
