Message from the President/CEO

LifeLink is honored to carry out the decisions of all donors and donor families to give the gift of life; to provide comfort and support to donor families and facilitate lifesaving transplants to patients on the waiting list. We partnered with our teams of hospital staff and leaders, medical examiners, coroners, funeral homes, and transplant centers in pursuit of our shared goal of saving and improving lives through organ, eye, and tissue donation. Throughout the pandemic, LifeLink adapted quickly, adopted new processes, and embraced innovation and opportunity to continue our lifesaving mission. We weathered the storm successfully and recently returned to in-person public interaction for both professional development and hospital development staff and look forward to seeing you all again.

LifeLink Foundation facilitated 2,130 life-saving organ transplants and 148,000 life-enhancing tissue allografts, provided comfort and support to over 2,000 donor families and provided Immunological testing for more than 3,600 patient evaluations.

Also noteworthy, LifeLink of Georgia celebrated the first anniversary of the LifeLink of Georgia Organ Recovery Center (ORC) at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. The ORC provides specialized care for donors, optimizing organ function and increasing their ability to donate life. It is also a place where donor families can feel comfortable while they say goodbye to their loved one outside of a traditional ICU environment.

Approximately 192 local hospitals throughout the Foundation service area earned national recognition for increasing organ, eye and tissue donor registrations through the Workplace Partnership for Life (WPFL) Hospital Organ Donation Campaign. LifeLink recruited and partnered with hospitals between October 2021 and April 2022 to plan and conduct organ donation education and donor registration activities.

Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) “Workplace Partnership For Life” Hospital Campaign recognizes the efforts of hospitals that work in partnership with their local organ, tissue and eye recovery organizations to support education about donation in their communities.

Marissa was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a small child, which meant four insulin shots a day and frequent hospitalizations. By the time she was 30, Marissa began to tire and feel out of breath quickly when being active; which led to an additional diagnosis, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). CIDP is an autoimmune disease which attacks the body’s tissue and nerve system. This diagnosis resulted in Marissa losing the ability to walk, but Marissa refused to accept defeat. She worked to gain strength using a walker, and eventually was able to walk independently again. Unfortunately, her kidney function didn’t fare as well, and Marissa began dialysis in 2018 while being placed on the kidney/pancreas transplant waiting list. Two years later, Marissa got a call the day before her birthday asking if she was ready for the gift of life. The day she turned 35, Marissa was wheeled into surgery and received her lifesaving kidney and pancreas transplant, which Marissa describes as a rebirth. No longer diabetic or insulin dependent, and with her CIDP in remission, Marissa is an active LifeLink volunteer and shares her story to encourage others to register as organ and tissue donors. Marissa is profoundly grateful for her donor and their family for the life she lives now.

THE COVER: Krista Heineke, Heart Recipient

Shortly after college graduation, Krista, who was born and raised in Colorado, moved to New Orleans. In April 2003, at only 23-years-old and thousands of miles away from family, she began to experience severe chest pains. After many tests, doctors determined Krista had acute myocarditis. She caught a virus which unfortunately attacked her heart. A few weeks later, while participating in cardiac rehab, Krista was told she was in congestive heart failure and would need a heart transplant. After a short wait Krista received the gift of life. “It was a rollercoaster of emotions when I was told a heart was available. I was sad for this family who just lost someone, but grateful to them.” Nine months after her transplant Krista ran a 10k race in celebration of her motto, to live life to the fullest and to make the most of the new life she was given. Krista is an avid traveler, has visited 49 U.S. states and 40 countries, and her newest hobby is paddle boarding. Although she hasn’t met her donor family, Krista hopes she will one day. Thanks to a stranger’s generosity, Krista will celebrate her 20th transplant anniversary in 2023.

LifeLink Tissue Bank is the largest nonprofit tissue bank in the Southeastern United States and provides over 148,000 allografts annually to orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgical specialists. Though our skilled team is equipped to recover all lifeenhancing tissue grafts, we specialize in processing and distribution of spine, sports and general orthopedic grafts.

LifeLink Tissue Bank recognizes that each allograft placed for transplant has a backstory filled with medical professionals, community partners, LifeLink staff, and of course, a donor and their family, who make life-enhancing tissue transplantation a reality for patients in need. LifeLink Tissue Bank is committed to providing excellence in education through accredited professional education programs for healthcare personnel who care for tissue recipients, to ensure the magnitude of such gifts is recognized.

How miraculous is birth tissue?

*When an adult aged individual registers as an organ, tissue and/ or eye donor, their decision is a legally binding document of gift. At the time of a registered donor’s death, it is the recovery organization’s obligation to honor that individual’s donation decision to the best of its ability.

Birth Tissue is a very precious gift. When a baby is born, birth tissue is typically discarded immediately. Did you know that the placenta, amniotic fluid and umbilical cord contain unique cells that have incredible healing properties? When a mother chooses to donate precious birth tissue, it can be transformed into life-enhancing tissue-based allografts that surgeons use to help patients heal.

A new life gives a new hope to patients in need. Did you know that over 100 tissue allografts can be derived from one single birth tissue donation? These allografts help patients recover from difficult-to-heal wounds, diabetic ulcers and are used in other life enhancing surgical procedures. Through the generous gift of birth tissue donation, LifeLink Tissue Bank is able to help patients get back on their feet and back to their everyday lives.

Kathy, only 28 at the time, felt ill with what she thought was a stomach flu. Symptoms persisted longer than expected and medical tests revealed a virus had indeed invaded Kathy’s body and attacked her heart. Kathy was in congestive heart failure and immediately started a regimen of medication and lifestyle changes to mitigate her symptoms. Unfortunately, Kathy’s condition worsened and she was hospitalized, where she remained until she received the gift of a heart transplant.

Now, Kathy enjoys swimming or walking long distances, things she struggled to do before her transplant because of her extreme fatigue. In July 2022, Kathy even graduated college. She is grateful to her donor, who has provided her the ability to enjoy more quality time with her family. Whenever she can, Kathy shares her story to educate others, especially multicultural communities, about the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation.

As a cardiologist, Dr. Velazquez is used to being the one taking care of patients, not receiving care himself. After feeling dizzy following his daily exercise, Dr. Velazquez found himself on the other side of the white coat and in need of emergency care. Tests revealed Dr. Velazquez’s heart was not beating normally and an internal defibrillator was implanted to maintain his heart’s rhythm, which worked for a while. Over time, Dr. Velazquez’s heart gradually weakened. He was hospitalized

in critical condition and told his only chance of survival was a heart transplant. Three months after receiving his transplant, Dr. Velazquez returned to his work as a cardiologist, and every day he thanks God for His mercy and his donor’s act of love.

as if it belonged to someone else. Medical attention brought a diagnosis of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a disease that causes scarring in the kidneys, which are the body’s natural filter. Ron managed his condition and continued working until his symptoms indicated the need to begin dialysis and prepare for a kidney transplant. Ron posted on Facebook on the chance someone would be interested in becoming his living kidney donor

gave Ron a second chance at life through a kidney transplant. Ron is an active practitioner of martial arts and will soon test for his brown belt. His transplant experience and study of martial arts has given him the calm and confidence to tell his story to encourage others. Now that he’s on the other side of his transplant, Ron says, “I feel more grounded and it’s easy to be thankful every day.”

Ana has always been committed to helping others and is dedicated to using her talent as an artist to teach students to transform their ideas into artistic creations. Ana was devastated when her husband passed away while waiting for a kidney transplant, so when Ana learned Melvin, a young man she had crossed paths with, needed a kidney transplant, she continued her

life of service with an offer to be his living donor. Today Melvin feels that Ana is like his second mother since she gave him a second chance at life through the gift of kidney donation. This act feels, to Ana, like a blessing and the mission God planned for her.

Maureen

had always been active and healthy, which is why in 2008, it was a surprise for her to be inexplicably tired after a short workout. When it became difficult to climb stairs at work, Maureen consulted her doctor. Hearing crackling sounds in her lungs, he sent Maureen to a pulmonologist who performed testing over the course of the next year, with no forthcoming answers. Ultimately, Maureen was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a condition which causes irreparable scarring on the lungs and for Maureen, meant needing a lung transplant. Maureen waited nearly nine years until she received new lungs in 2017. Maureen is

more active than ever, with her family by her side, her husband of 30 years, two daughters, and as she calls him, the crown jewel, her son. Maureen enjoys giving back as a LifeLink volunteer, and volunteers with Metropolitan Ministries, the American Cancer Society and adaptive sports, such as archery, with her son who has spina bifida. Maureen credits her faith, family and friends, and the medical professionals who performed her transplant, but most importantly she knows it was the generosity of her donor’s family that gave her renewed life.

Anormal family visit turned into an eye-opening event for Josué. Josué’s niece, a doctor, realized at a glance that his liver condition had turned more serious and encouraged him to seek more thorough medical attention. Josué never imagined he would be in a situation to need an organ transplant, but doctors told him a liver transplant was his only option to survive. This realization was extremely difficult for Josué, since it took him by surprise, but with the love of his family, the help of his doctors and especially the help and emotional support of his closest friends and their positive thoughts, Josué was able to overcome this

difficult situation. Since his transplant, Josué, who is a business advisor, has enjoyed getting back to activities like traveling, experiencing other cultures and continuing with new challenges. “I want to thank everyone who made this opportunity possible, especially my donor and his family, for believing in donation to continue giving life,” says Josué.

According to Jarvis’ sister, Jamia, she always knew he was special. He was tall, charming and loved to play sports and video games. Jarvis preferred to work with his hands and after a quick stint at Tallahassee Community College realized he had career aspirations in a different direction. Jarvis was studying for his commercial driver license to help support his young son, when he unfortunately passed away. Jarvis’s family was approached about organ and tissue donation and without hesitation, they said yes, hoping he could save and heal others. Jamia has met Jarvis’s heart and kidney/pancreas recipients. Jamia states that her brother’s

recipients “don’t look like me, but I love them,” and she considers them her new, blended family. Jamia knows he had a purpose, and his becoming a donor has helped Jamia channel her grief and heal. Jarvis’s son, now 15, is a mirror image of his father and acts just like him.

Ashalana

noticed her 5-month-old daughter, Ashtyn, developed labored breathing, her lips and fingertips were blue, and she wasn’t eating much. Covid-19 had swept the country and Ashalana feared her daughter had caught the virus. Ashalana took Ashtyn to the emergency room, where the good news was, Ashtyn did not have COVID. However, Ashtyn was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a condition in which the bile ducts of the liver are damaged, impacting liver function. Ashtyn needed a liver transplant. Ashalana volunteered to donate a portion of her liver to save her daughter’s life, but as a single mother was advised by Ashtyn’s

medical team not to do so. Instead, an initially anonymous living donor came forward to save Ashtyn’s life. Since then, the families have been able to connect and are no longer strangers. Ashalana says, “I birthed Ashtyn and gave her life, but her living donor gave her life a second time.” This sentiment was especially poignant once Ashalana learned Ashtyn’s donor couldn’t have children and felt compelled to give life instead through living organ donation. Ashalana is forever grateful to Ashtyn’s donor for the chance to watch Ashtyn grow, now a typical toddler full of energy, who loves to dance and explore nature.

In 2002, while living in San Francisco, Terry learned his younger brother, Marty, struggling with lupus and kidney failure, was placed on dialysis. However, it was only after Terry moved to Atlanta and visited with his brother that he began to truly understand how difficult things had become as Marty waited for a kidney transplant. Terry knew he had to help and was tested to determine if he could be his brother’s living donor. As luck would have it, he was a perfect match. Terry has always been in great health from his days of playing football in the NFL in 1978, to his present-day job as the Manager at the College Football Hall of Fame, and he was able to donate one of his healthy kidneys to save his brother. Since the donation, Terry

and Marty have recovered well, and Marty is extremely grateful to his big brother for giving him this amazing gift. Terry had never previously given much thought to organ and tissue donation, but since donating his kidney, he has registered to be a deceased donor and proudly displays it on his driver’s license. He wears a donation wristband and when he is asked about it, starts conversations about donation and transplantation to educate others and encourage them to consider living donation or registration as an organ and tissue donor after death.

As an ICU nurse, Amber has seen firsthand just how healing organ, eye and tissue donation can be for families whose loved ones were able to give the gift of life after death. That is why when her father, Kenneth, who was also her best friend, passed away, Amber fervently supported his decision, made prior to his death, to be a donor. Kenneth was able to save the life of a 28-year-old man, who had been in end-stage organ failure and was awaiting a liver transplant. Although Amber does not know her father’s liver recipient, she hopes to meet him one day. Amber and her brother continue to honor their dad’s legacy as a donor, as well as his love of genealogy and pride in their

Scottish heritage, which Kenneth had impressed upon them throughout their entire childhood, by sharing his story. They miss their dad, but both siblings are grateful to the LifeLink staff for the compassion and care their family received throughout Kenneth’s donation. They see his legacy of renewed life as a silver lining in their healing journey.

Candice was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age seven and managed her disease well throughout her adolescence. In college, however, Candice’s health drastically declined. Candice still managed to graduate, moved to her hometown, started her career and married the love of her life. In 2015, doctors informed Candice that her kidney function dropped to 30% and the following year it functioned at only 15%. She needed dialysis and a kidney transplant. Several relatives stepped up as potential living donors, but it was Candice’s husband, Gibran, who was the

perfect match. In early December 2016, Candice and her husband went into surgery and recovered together during the Christmas holiday. Three weeks post-transplant, Candice was back at work with the promise she would do everything possible to take care of her gifted kidney. Her health was improved further with a pancreas transplant which resolved her lifelong battle with diabetes. “I’m the best I’ve ever been, and I have so much joy, excitement and hope because of my donors,” says Candice.

From an early age, Caroline was an active picture of good health, but around middle school she noticed her knee and hip would dislocate frequently, mostly while doing normal, everyday activities. As Caroline got older, the pain with each dislocation grew worse and Caroline learned she had a congenital condition impacting her bones and joints. Several surgeries to correct the condition did not relieve Caroline’s pain so she sought another medical opinion and learned a tissue transplant could alleviate her discomfort. Caroline underwent surgeries on each knee separately,

and within six months she was pain-free. “My tissue transplants changed my life in ways that I didn’t know they could. It is the most powerful earthly gift I’ve ever received.” Caroline is grateful to have met one of the donor families who helped restore her mobility. As a graduating senior at Kennesaw State University, studying exercise science with further aspirations to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Caroline plans to continue to help others with pain and physical challenges.

Wilfredo’s story has been one full of challenges. Since birth, he suffered from kidney disease, which resulted in living a very restricted life to preserve his health. While in college, Wilfredo received a kidney transplant which allowed him to fulfill many of his dreams. Sadly, 12 years later, Wilfredo’s body began to reject his precious gift causing him to return to dialysis three days a week and be listed for another transplant. Three years later, Wilfredo underwent his second kidney transplant. Today,

Wilfredo stands out for being the Activities Director and Human Resources Coordinator of the Serralles Castle Board of Trustees in Ponce, demonstrating that there is an active and productive life after a transplant. Wilfredo thanks God for all His blessings, his family for helping and supporting him in his transplant, and most especially, his donor for giving him life.
