A summer to savour

T

hese are the months to savour this summer. In this issue we have plenty for you to treasure, starting with The Haslemere Food and Beer Festivals (page 32) in September.

There are many other things to look forward to,

such as refreshing your wardrobe with the help of our Autumn Almanac, including contributions from independent retailers in Haslemere. While we have yet to see the full effects of the longawaited A3 Tunnel, open from the end of July, we can be sure that it will mark a new chapter in local history – particularly for Grayshott and Hindhead, and we focus on these two villages in this issue. The new school year begins in September, of course, so we advise parents who feel a little unprepared to turn to our Back to School feature on page 18 for some guidance on where to find those essentials.

Hospital plans rejected Plans to restore the historic King Edward VII hospital between Fernhurst and Midhurst and redevelop around it were rejected on referral by the planning committee of the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) in July. Committee members described the issues as “finely balanced” but decided to follow the recommendation of their officer and refuse the proposal approved by Chichester District Council (CDC) in April. Developers City and Country Group said afterwards that they would appeal. Built in the early 20th century, the hospital has several Grade II listed buildings and a Gertrude Jekyll garden. The City and Country scheme would restore the hospital building, create new residential units, a shop and a café in the chapel, and build 220 new homes in the grounds. There would be 143 assisted-care units in the old hospital building and more units would come from converting other buildings. Objections to the plans came from parish councils at Easebourne, Elsted

and Treyford, Liphook and Bramshott, Lynchmere, Fernhurst, and Bepton; both the Midhurst and Haslemere Town Councils; the South Downs, the Midhurst, the Lynchmere and the Haslemere Societies. Afterwards Helen Moore, Residential Managing Director of City & Country, said: “The SDNPA has squandered the last and best opportunity for a comprehensive solution to preserve one of the district’s best-loved heritage assets. We will appeal this highly unsatisfactory decision and we are confident that we will win at appeal with costs awarded against SDNPA."

Hounds for Heroes was founded by Allen Parton, who served with the Royal Navy during the first Gulf War and suffered severe physical and mental injuries on duty. When he left the Navy, his life, and that of his family, was transformed completely by the arrival of Endal, a young Labrador Although Allen is confined to a wheelchair, Endal helped him regain a considerable amount of independence and self-confidence. Sadly Endal has died deceased and his replacement is called Endal Junior or ‘EJ’.

Tunnel open The A3 tunnel finally opened to traffic on 27July – to south-bound traffic with the north-bound section due to open two days later. The A3 traffic flow of some 30,000 vehicles a day is expected to rise to 36,000 after the opening. The £371 million tunnel project, started in 2007, was finished on time and within budget by contractors Balfour Beatty. The last pieces of work on the tunnel involved painting, connecting equipment and final testing. Landscaping and planting of the area round the 1.2-mile tunnel will be done by March 2012. The orchard was given to the society from the estate of Peter Burkitt. Michael Shaw, Chair of Lynchmere Society, said. “Peter was keen to preserve the land for the community in which he had lived.” The area is popular with local walkers and the footpaths are being improved to encourage greater use by wheelchair users. Prepared pots

Your home will look instantly more inviting and well cared for if you place a pair of pots at either side of the front door, say Transform Landscape Design and Construction. They suggest you buy ready prepared pots from the garden centre or have fun creating your own combinations. For an all-year-round effect and low maintenance, clipped Box (Buxus sempervirens) is unbeatable. August is a good time to get evergreen Yew and Conifer hedges trimmed and shaped. Hedges trimmed now should keep their shape all through the winter and into next spring, but do not trim them on a very hot day. www.transformlandscapes.co.uk

Magnificent Magnificats Local community group Grayshott Concerts, whose patron is world famous composer Karl Jenkins, have an especially strong following for their choral performances. On 9 September the group has attracted the award-winning Sweelinck Choir and Orchestra from London to perform ‘a feast of baroque’ music at St Luke’s Church, Grayshott, at 7.30pm. The programme, ‘Magnificat’, features two Magnificats in contrasting styles by Vivaldi and Bach, written less than 10 years apart. Directed by Martin Knizia, the orchestra will perform on period instruments. “This is a very exciting concert for Grayshott,” said artistic director, Vivien Harrison, “because, once again, we’ve secured a high-calibre choir and orchestra

with an international reputation to come to St Luke’s. We’re really looking forward to it.” The event will be the first to benefit from a grant from the ‘Tunnel Vision Fund’, awarded to Grayshott Concerts in recognition of their project to assist disabled members of the audience. The award was made by the Community Foundation for Surrey, which administers the distribution of funds raised from the ‘Tunnel Walk’ on behalf of Hindhead Together. The performance, sponsored by Applegarth, Huntington House and XL-erate Ltd, includes two well-known orchestral works, Handel’s Organ Concerto with Choral Finale, and Albinoni’s Concerto in C for Two Oboes. This summer the golf centre offers holiday camps for juniors on the 8, 17 and 23 August. This is the perfect opportunity to get children excited about golf during the summer holidays! The centre caters for plenty of other groups, with dedicated weekly sessions for ladies, and opportunities for group bookings. As well as the successful Golf Academy and Driving Range the centre has benefited from the addition of a well-stocked golf shop which works with the established electronic caddy repair service known as Caddyrite. The owners have plans to expand the shop over the autumn to include accessories from a wide range of sports. To preview the types of products on sale, visit www.0800sports.co.uk.

Organizers of the third FirkinFest are seeking sponsors for just £80 for an event which promises a great deal: ‘superb’ beers, ciders and entertainment with a barbecue on 28-29 October, in the Village Hall. Tickets from Grayshott Books, or contact Peter Hatch, 07855 519644 www.firkinfest.com

New BIG chairman Adrian Banwell has received a resounding vote to become Chairman and Coordinator of BIG, after the next meeting on 18 October, when Dick Smith will stand down. Adrian, whose recruitment business is based in Grayshott, is delighted to accept the position as he wants to “put something back into the village” where he has lived for 19 years.

High acclaim Hindhead is a unique village with an exciting past and promising future

The right Honorable Philip Hammond cuts the ribbon

The first cars drive through the tunnel

T

he A3 Hindhead Tunnel was opened by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond on 27 July, heralding the start of vastly improved journeys on the main route between London and Portsmouth. After cutting the ribbon and seeing the first traffic going through the new 1.2 mile tunnel, Philip Hammond said: “This is another one of the ‘missing links’ in Britain’s trunk road network now put in place. This cutting-edge road scheme has surpassed expectations in almost every way, and sets a new standard. The Highways Agency, along with their contractors Balfour Beatty, designers Mott MacDonald, and

consultants Atkins are to be congratulated.” The £371 million tunnel – the longest of its type in the UK – is part of a four-mile bypass of Hindhead. Delivered within budget and on schedule, the project has won awards for its innovation and its safety record. The name “Hindhead” can be traced back to 1571, and can be understood to mean “hill frequented by hinds”, that is to say deer. In more recent times Hindhead has gained acclaim through its rich literary associations. The famous playwright George Bernard Shaw lived at “Blen Cathra”, now the site of St Edmund’s School. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lived at Undershaw from 1897 to 1907 and it

was in Hindhead that he wrote parts of The Hound of the Baskervilles, one of his most famous novels. His home later became a hotel and restaurant on the A3 although it is now closed and developers have planning consent to expand the site, although this permission is being contested by Save Undershaw. The nearby Devil’s Punch Bowl has a darker history. The area was notorious in times past for highwayman. Indeed the Sailor’s Stone on Gibbet Hill, which can be visited today, marks the place where three highwaymen on foot were hanged after murdering a sailor on Hindhead Common.

Care in the community

A new style of care home comes to Hindhead

S

ignature Senior Lifestyle aims to offer a new approach to care homes – creating communities where residents have “their own front door”. Moorlands Lodge will become the fourth Signature care home when it opens this autumn in Hindhead, creating 120 jobs. With 97 studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, Moorlands Lodge will feature a licensed restaurant, a Signature cafe and library, and a health and beauty emporium. Creenagh Williamson, the General Manager, says: “We will give our residents the dignity and privacy they deserve, whilst tailoring care to their individual needs. This can range from assisted living, residential and nursing care

to convalescence and post-operative care.” “We will also be offering specialist dementia care within our dedicated unit where our residents will receive the support that they need to help them maintain their dignity and independence.”

Time capsule and ‘topping out’ Pupils from the neighbouring Stepping Stones School buried a time capsule in July, when Moorlands Lodge held a ‘topping out’ ceremony to mark the completion of the roof structure. Pupils Amie Humphries, Ryan Shore, Jessica Butler and Joe Shaw, supported by head teacher Neil Clark, chose a range of school memorabilia, including

photographs of the school and students, a timetable, a DVD of their recent end of term prom, and a mobile phone. Moorlands Lodge, 0845 680 8648. www.signature-care-homes.co.uk/ moorlands-lodge.

Good day sunshine

Your eyes are just as vunerable as your skin to potential damage from the harmful rays of the sun. So keep your eyes protected, say local experts

Holiday eyes

Optical options The suitcase is packed, swimming costume and sun tan lotion squeezed in between the beach towels and flip flops; but have you thought about your eye care during your holiday? Like your skin, your eyes never recover from damage caused by exposure to UV radiation, so just as you put on sun tan cream to protect your skin against harmful rays, don’t forget to protect your eyes by wearing suitable sunglasses. Warm holiday destinations can sometimes result in itchy eyes from hay fever or dust and dry eyes from hotel air conditioning. Specialist eye drops will help sooth your

eyes from these every day irritations. Also, if you wear glasses, don’t forget to pack your back-up option - whether it’s extra contact lenses, a spare pair of glasses or a pair of prescription sunglasses, as accidents can and do happen! Hopefully our summer holiday eye care tips can help you enjoy your trip while looking after you and your family’s eyes. If you need any further help with your eye care this summer, one of our friendly members of staff at your local Leightons Opticians will be delighted to assist you. Leightons, 01428 643975

Winter sports Grayshott Golf Centre is offering an innovative new pair of prescription sunglasses for Alpine and Winter Sports. By submitting prescription details online the company can turn around your order in 7-10 days and you will receive your unique prescription sunglasses for only £74.99. The product is perfect for prescription wearers who enjoy outdoor sports with tinted lenses clipped onto the 24

Life in Haslemere

prescription frames allowing them to be flipped up or down according to need. The Scratch Pro can be purchased online at www.0800sports.co.uk or by calling 01428 713131.

Top tips from Martin Chandler – Optometrist and founder of Chandler’s Opticians Godalming, Haslemere and Bordon. • DO take a spare pair of glasses. • DO take enough contact lenses for the entire holiday if you are a lens wearer (and a back up pair of glasses just in case) • DON’T wear contact lenses for long haul flights – they are likely to dry out and become uncomfortable. • DON’T underestimate the power of the sun – good quality U.V. blocking sunglasses to prescription if required or light adaptive photochromic lenses are an essential item in the holiday packing. You’ll cope well with seaside glare and be sure that you won’t be harmed by excessive sunshine. Chandlers, 01428 652512

Green wood

The new charnwood Cfour stove

Lynda Davies says that wood-burning stoves are both green and cost effective

W

ood is one of the most sustainable of all fuels. By using wood to heat our homes, we pick a source of energy which is as close to being carbon neutral as we can find. At the same time it helps to ensure the long-term future of forests and the animals and plants that thrive in woodland. In many parts of the country, natural habitats and the species that depend on them have suffered from years of gradual decline. So the encouragement of better woodland management is a welcome boost for them. Wood-burning stoves are greener, 26

Life in Haslemere

and the advent of clean-burn and airwash systems ensures that the stoves operate effectively and efficiently. Modern stoves are the most efficient, cost effective way to heat the home. A good wood-burning stove will yield up to 85% heat return compared to an average of 20% from a conventional open fire. They are safe to run as they are enclosed, controllable, can be left unattended, and require no electricity to operate – great when there’s a power cut. It is important to use fully seasoned logs to avoid tar build up, overly blackening

glass and possible chimney fires. Equally important is maintenance: annual chimney sweeping is a must, and the door rope and fire-bricks need replacing over time. It may be tempting to buy a stove on the internet and install it yourself. But there are strict regulations controlling installation, so it is wise to get a professional to do the job for you. You will then have a safe installation, maintenance of your stove and the peace of mind that comes with the manufacturer’s full warranty. With gas, electric and oil heating costs soaring year on year, can you afford not to have a wood-burner? Lynda Davies, Blaze House Art, Grayshott. www.blazehouseart.co.uk

Latebreaks

Luxury travel expert Alyson Cook discovers some bargain breaks for the late season

W

ith school holidays nearly over, the canny traveller will be looking for fantastic, late offers available in September to November. The top five bargain destinations are:

South Africa

With temperate, warm weather and no jet-lag (it’s in the UK time zone), cities such as Cape Town are enjoying a resurgence with British holidaymakers. South Africa has it all, whether you want a beach holiday, a safari or just good photographic options with mountain scenery to die for.

Bali, Indonesia

Bali may be small – you can circumnavigate it in just over 24 hours – but its prominence as a bargain destination at this time of year is huge. It offers temples, fabulous beaches, traditional dance performances and captivating scenery.

Koh Samui, Thailand

Koh Samui has a broad appeal, 28

Life in Haslemere

with its distinctive, relaxed atmosphere. There's a lot more to do than lounging on the beach; from exploring the jungle canopy by swinging through the trees on a cable, to watching Thai boxing, the world’s most dangerous martial art (but surprisingly graceful to watch.)

Mauritius

Until October, this exotic island in the Indian Ocean offers great family holiday options with almost perfect weather, an oasis of peace and tranquillity.

Jersey

With its unspoiled landscape and unique blend of British/ French influences, Jersey is a place where you can get away from it all, without having to travel far (and still drive on the left-hand side of the road). Summer warmth lingers on into the autumn months far longer than on the UK mainland. Triumph for Zacara in Gold Cup thriller Zacara just beat Les Lions 12-11 in a riveting final of the British Open Polo Championship

T

orrential rain failed to dampen the final of the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup at Cowdray Park on Sunday 17 July. Huge support was shown for Les Lions, the team of Joachim Gotschalk who has been on the quest for the most coveted trophy in polo since 1993. Businessman Lyndon Lea, with his team Zacara, has entered the championship every year since 1995. Zacara scored two goals from Gonzalo

30

Life in Haslemere

Deltour in the first chukka, but Les Lions then took a 4-2 lead in the second. In the third chukka a penalty 30 yard shot extended Les Lions lead, but goals by Ulloa (2) and Deltour levelled the score at 5-5. Then Zacara gave away a penalty so they trailed 5-6 at half time. The fourth chukka was the highest scoring with field goals from Ulloa for Zacara and Sebastian Merlos for Les Lions. Both teams

gave away two penalties apiece, and Les Lions still led 10-8 at the break. But Les Lions failed to score in the fifth and gave away a penalty to enable Zacara to creep up to 9-10. Four field goals came in the final chukka, Nachi du Plessis levelling the scores at 10 apiece and then dramatically giving his side the lead for the first time. Tincho Merlos once again worked his magic to pull Les Lions ahead again to roars from the crowd. Suddenly Deltour seized a chance and there was another through the post for Zacara. A scrum in front of the goal posts failed to bring another goal for Les Lions and the score remained on 12-11 in Zacara’s favour as the final bell sounded. Lyndon Lea’s side, coached by former England player Andrew Hine, and surrounded by a huge network of grooms, support staff and family erupted into celebrations. Lyndon Lea said: “On the road we beat last year’s winners Dubai and 2009 winners La Bamba de Areco but to have actually won the Gold Cup is amazing – an absolute dream.” www.cowdraypolo.co.uk L

hen the museum hosted Haslemere Chamber’s Meet the Business evening in July, trustee Melanie Odell announced plans to beat the recession. “The museum costs £500 a day to run,” she told fellow chamber members, praising the 12 staff and 100 volunteers. “We are privately funded by bequests and donations. Our accounts have been badly affected by the economic climate and we are running at a deficit. But we are not downhearted and we will build up our endowment fund.” As well as fundraising events the museum receives major support from corporate sponsorship, which costs £120 per year. “The 2,500 museums in this country make a big contribution to their community and are increasingly important in bringing groups of people together,” Mrs Odell said. Education is at the core of the museum which was founded in 1888, and attracts visits from schools, residential and nursing homes to see the diverse collection of paintings, sculpture, crafts and photographs. “The annual programme of events is fit to bursting and has something for all ages,” Mrs Odell added. “The folk art collection is of international importance.” Haslemere Educational Museum, L 01428 642112 36

Magical experiences

T

he Magical Rooms in Grayshott has been taken over by Lorraine and Derek Vidgen, who live in Beacon Hill. They have been aware of the shop’s good reputation locally and are sure that it has a large amount of ‘untapped potential’. They have quickly expanded the Magical Rooms’ remit into putting on workshops for children during the summer with the focus on having fun while learning. The workshops range from ‘Wacky science’ days to ‘wizarding/Harry Potter crafts’ days. A brand new website has been created, where you can book your place on all of the magical workshops. The couple have wanted to “branch into retail for some time”, says Derek. As

well as being an IT consultant and chartered accountant he coaches the Beacon Hill under-10 football squad. Lorraine also works with children in the community having had experience as a teaching assistant. She hopes this will complement her knowledge of event management to produce some truly magical workshops. Their aim is to provide a magical and memorable experience without breaking the bank. They hope that the new and improved Magical Rooms will “keep local children even more occupied and active”. Magical Rooms, 01428 608340. www.magicalrooms.co.uk Matty O’Kelly

COMPETITION

WIN!

a night for 2 with dinner and breakfast

Great occasions start and end here

The Inn on the Hill, opposite Haslemere station, specializes in great steaks and a cheerful customer culture

T

he Inn on the Hill is owned by The Tailor Made Dining Company – Ted Docherty and Dion Korving. They and Head Chef Mario James who are all South Africans. The idea came to Ted when he was working for brewers Greene King and reckoned he could do it for himself. He thought of having steaks cut and displayed in front of customers – and that goes down really well in their pubs. The company started with the Percy Arms in Chilworth. Greene King had given Ted a 15-year lease there and he increased turnover from £180,000 to £1.5 million. Then they expanded to The Inn on the Hill. Ted Docherty ran The Percy Arms with Dion Korving at the Inn on the Hill. The Tailor Made Dining Company adores meat. “We are a gastro pub with an emphasis on steak,” they say. “We all have a passion for steak and this is where our speciality comes in. Tailor Made steaks is what we do! “We pride ourselves on the best provenance – this means authenticity, assurance and the www.lifemags.co.uk

finest quality ingredients. We want customers to experience all things meaty – then add some wine and our Tailor Made Culture – that’s our great staff and atmosphere. “There’s also a range of sandwiches, ploughman’s and salads, starters and main courses and our gourmet burgers. Whether you want a full English breakfast or just a quick bite, Inn on the Hill has it all. We’re big on the small things that matter.” The Inn is an imposing Victorian building, with a chic contemporary interior. The open-plan layout features slate floors, leather upholstery, a relaxing bar area, wireless broadband and chunky oak furniture. The eight bedrooms on the first floor are well proportioned

and luxuriously equipped with dark wood furniture, flat-screen televisions, fluffy duvets, high-speed internet and luxury en-suite bathrooms. Each bedroom is themed in a different type of wood. The garden behind the Inn is a secret hideaway. The alfresco table service dining area provides a wonderful suntrap to enjoy a warm summer’s day, and at weekends customers can experience a traditional South African Braai (BBQ).
