Sertari
Local singing sensation, Sertari, has reached the regional finals of the UK’s biggest singing competition. Attracting over 8,000 acts, Open Mic UK has travelled the country searching for the best singing talent. Now just one performance away from the grand final and a gig at the O2 Arena in London, Sertari, will compete with other regional finalists at the Portsmouth Guildhall on the 9 December. If successful, Sertari could win £5,000 and face judges including DJ Annie Nightingale, singer Shola Ama, and former D:Ream frontman Pete Cunna. Rudolf and Prancer come to Petersfield On the 10 November Rudolf and Prancer will be making a special visit to Petersfield. The visit comes as part of Stansted House’s festival due to return on the 23-25 November. With many local exhibitors, as well as companies from further afield, the event has become a popular alternative to the usual stressful Christmas shopping experience. During the festival, the Stansted Light Railway and ‘Rudolph & Prancer’ will be giving lifts on the ‘Festive Horse Drawn Carriage’ between the house and the garden centre. The festival will also see the ‘below stairs’ rooms of Stansted House full of treats with the Old Kitchen, Servants Hall, Pantries, Housekeeper and Butler’s rooms all featuring a wide selection of Christmas foods along with wine, beer and liqueur tasting. The ‘upstairs’ stately rooms will then have creative and decorative Christmas decorations for the house, including; 6

inspirational stands in the Main Hall as well as an array of wreaths, garlands, wrapping paper, ribbons, cards, candles, interior accessories and tableware in the Music Room Blue Drawing Room and Boudoir. Enhancing eyes This year saw Graham Coates make his 12th trip to Africa with UKbased charity Vision Aid Overseas. Graham, who is a partner at MorganOwen & Coates Optometrists in Lavant Street, Petersfield, has been Graham Coates with an active member Vision Aid Overseas of the charity for over a decade, working to transform eye care services in developing countries. Of the world’s population, 670 million people (10%) are disadvantaged by poor vision and a lack of glasses. “It’s fantastic to use my professional skill in a place where there is so much need,” Graham explains. “I’ve just returned from working in Gulu, North East Uganda, an area recently ravaged by war. It is always humbling to see the desperate need and the difference a simple pair of glasses can make to someone’s life. Part of my recent trip involved training local health teams to screen for eye conditions.” In order to achieve the aim of establishing locally based eye care services in every country where they operate, Vision Aid Overseas is developing Vision Centres where patients can receive a walk-in eye examination, purchase an affordable pair of glasses and be referred for further specialist care if necessary. The ultimate goal of the charity is to create entirely self-sufficient Vision Centres to provide long lasting access to eye care for their local communities. Cover girl Life in Petersfield’s cover photographer, Stephanie Swan has won the prestigious award of the BIPP student portfolio of the year. Taking place in London on board Tattershall Castle, the awards celebrate the achievements of everyone who had achieved their Associate or Fellowship Qualification in 2011 with the Qualifications Presentations. As well as the award, Stephanie received a £500 cash prize and a double page spread in the BIPP magazine “The Photographer”. On Friday 16 November, Rams Walk Shopping Centre joins in the fun for the Petersfield Lights Switch On. Between 3.30pm and 7.30pm, the Centre comes alive with magic, illusions and fire artists leading up to the switching on of the lights.

Walking in a
winter wonderland… The Petersfield Festivals have become a popular feature on the town’s social calendar. From the success of the Spring Festival over the May Bank Holiday to the summer extravaganza back in August, we can rely on Steve and Ben at Petersfield Festivals to put on a good show. So, as we approach everyone’s favourite festive holiday, we knew they would have something impressive planned – and boy they haven’t disappointed! The Christmas fun starts on the 16 November with the Switching on of the Christmas Lights for Children In Need. This night will feature a whole host of family entertainment, including children’s rides, entertainment on stage and a visit from Father Christmas. The Petersfield Town Mayor and Damien Hinds MP will then light the all important lights, all in a bid to raise funds for Children in Need. The 16 November will also see the launch of the Christmas Tree Trail. Returning for a second year the initiative gets the children of Petersfield to follow a trail of participating shops. In each shop the children will be able to collect a sticker to stick onto the map whilst joining in other competitions. The overall winners of the Trail will win vouchers that can be spent at the participating shops on the trail. The festive fun continues on Saturday 1 December with the opening of The Petersfield Winter Wonderland at the Red Lion, on College Street Petersfield. Here there will be a large skating rink, Christmas themed stalls and a Santa’s Grotto at the weekends. Opening in style, the evening 20

of 1 December will also see a range of festive entertainment. The Wonderland will be open from 9am - 9 pm everyday until Sunday 23 of December. And for those not too tired after the 1 December’s evening entertainment, the 2 December will feature a Christmas Festival Market. Working with the Hampshire Farmers Market, Petersfield Festivals will
be taking over the centre of Petersfield to put on a large, festive and varied market -perfect for the Christmas shop! Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the food. But for those feeling a bit bored of the brussels and tired of the turkey, we’ve been finding some alternative recipes that will still leave you feeling full and festive
Preheat the oven to 200C, gas mark 6. Break up the Christmas pudding into pieces and mix with the cream until smooth. Spoon

Ingredients • 2.5kg Waitrose smoked gammon joint • 1 litre pressed apple juice • 30-35 whole cloves • 100ml Waitrose Fino Sherry • 155g pot Waitrose Cano’s Membrillo Pure Spanish Quince Paste (with the prepacked cheeses or from the cheese service counter) Method Place the gammon joint in a large pan then pour over the apple juice and enough cold water to cover. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and cover with a lid. Simmer for 1 hour.

If you want to try something different to tomato soup this quinoa & butter bean recipe uses superfood ingredients to keep you strong and healthy throughout the festive season • 4tbs light olive oil • 2 medium onions, chopped finely • 2 large carrots, chopped finely • 2 sticks of celery, trimmed and diced • 1tin of butter beans (400 grams) • 1.5 ltr vegetable stock • 6 oz quinoa • 4 tbs chopped fresh parsley • 1 tbs chopped fresh oregano, rosemary or thyme • 1 bay leaf • salt and pepper to taste
Place on a baking tray and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until crisp and serve with Waitrose Mince Pie IceCream.

Caponata - Sicilian Vegetable Sypmphony Relish This Sicilian dish makes a fantastic festive vegetarian option, with rustic bread or pasta Ingredients • 1 large chopped onion • 3-4 celery stalks, including the leaves, chopped finely • 5 tbls olive oil for cooking (not extra virgin) • 1kg (2 1/2 lb) aubergines, cut into 2.5cm (1 inch) chunks • 1 tbsp salted capers, soak in water for 10 minutes, then drained • 20 green olives, (remove the stones) • 1 tbls sugar • 1 tbls white wine vinegar • 55g (1 3/4 oz) concentrated tomato paste • salt and pepper • 2tbls extra virgin olive oil to add in at the end Method Blanche the onion and celery in lightly salted water for a few minutes, then drain.
Ingredients • Juice of 1 lemon • 3 tsp Belazu Rose Harissa • 12 raw Madagascan tiger prawn tails, peeled, about 250g • 2 tbsp Waitrose organic mayonnaise • 1 Hass avocado • 15g butter
Heat the cooking oil in a large frying pan, add the aubergine chunks and fry until brown and tender. (Perhaps do this in batches as you do not want to overcrowd the pan or the aubergine will just ‘melt
In a small bowl or ramekin, stir the remaining Rose Harissa into the mayonnaise for the dip. Cut the avocado in half lengthways down to the stone and all the way round. Twist the two halves in opposite directions and pull apart. Lift out the stone using the point of a sharp knife. Peel the skin and slice the flesh, then arrange on 2 plates. Melt the butter in a large frying pan, add the prawns with the marinade and cook for about 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the prawns are opaque and pink all over. The Caipiroska (Partner to any party) • Russian Standard Vodka (or Ketel One if you are spoiling yourself) • Crushed ice • Granulated sugar • Two large tall glasses • One Lime This is a brilliant party version of the Caipirinha. Dice a lime into sixteen pieces and place into a large tall glass. Cover with two heaped teaspoons of granulated sugar. Pour some vodka over the limes to wet the sugar and then gently muddle (crush) the limes to release the juice but also the oil from the skin. Use a spoon to release any stuck limes at the bottom. Add half a glass of crushed ice and fill up the glass with vodka. You could just stir the drink, but to really impress guests, take another glass (same type), invert onto top of your drink creating a seal with your hands, and shake the mixture between the glasses, then serve in the original glass. Make sure your hands seal the glasses well together or you and anyone nearby will get wet! Lots of festive fun and everyone will want a go. Fantastic and interactive!
Take a sugar cube and place it in a tumbler glass. Pour ten drops of angostura bitters onto the sugar cube and allow to soak in. Pour enough bourbon to cover the cube and crush and dissolve the sugar. Add a cube of ice and stir well. Squeeze the cherries to release their residual juice and pop the flesh in the glass. Add a little more bourbon, another ice cube and stir. Then slice off a strip of peel from the orange, twist into the glass to release the oils, rub onto the inner side of the glass to cover in oil, then drop a slither of the peel into the glass. Add two more cubes of ice and top up the glass with more bourbon and serve. Seems fiddly, but seriously worth the effort. This should be enjoyed by the fire - warming, toasty and delicious!

This refreshing daytime delight is created by mixing 3oz of lemonade and 3 oz of iced tea and a generous helping of ice for a sipping sensation that’s cool in more ways than one.

Pure Passion In a highball glass, mix 150ml mango juice with 200ml pineapple and passion fruit coconut water. Add some ice and stir through a few mint leaves. Garnish with extra mint and a slice of pineapple for that sunshine holiday feeling.
Berry Grape Fizz Add some ice cubes to a tumbler and half fill with mixed berries juice. Top up with sparkling red grape juice and garnish with grapes, raspberries and blackberries on cocktail sticks for your fivea-day treat. Orange Julius A classic blended mocktail that’s cool, smooth and creamy. Take 180ml of frozen orange juice concentrate, 150g of sugar, 200ml of milk and a teaspoon of vanilla extract for an easy-drinking cocktail that’s ideal for chilling out. Orange juice ice cubes and fresh orange juice work just as well as frozen concentrate and, best of all, the recipe can be easily adapted to create mango, peach or strawberry alternatives. Focus on Dragon Street Today Dragon Street is one of the most popular places to shop (and eat) in Petersfield. However, did you know that back in the 18th Century if you were to walk along this traditional street, instead of shops and restaurants you might have seen a white elephant? This is because Dragon Street resident and traveler, John Shakleford is said to have brought a white elephant to his home when returning

from a trip to the colonies! During this time the area was a bit more ‘elephant friendly’ as behind his house there was largely garden and orchard…We’ll let you be the judge if you think the story is true or legend! Christmas in Selborne The third ‘Christmas in Selborne’ will take place on Saturday 1 December from 5pm ‘til 9pm Last year saw crowds gather to enjoy crepes and music outside the Queens; hot food and mulled cider outside the Arms; arts and crafts in the Village Hall; farmyard animals in a stable, Juggling Jake entertaining the children and, of course, Father Christmas in the Church. This year there will be plenty more festive fun with stalls lining the High Street, filling the Village Hall and the Church. Father Christmas has promised that he will pop along again, and the Salvation Army will be coming on the Plestor for a medley of Christmas carols that all are invited to join in. Mill Farm will be returning with their animals and Juggling Jake will be back with his balloons and circus tricks. There will be lots of hot food and drink, as well as Christmas Market at The Queen’s featuring a variety of stallholders with a crepe man, a BBQ serving steak and German sausages. And finishing everything off, there will be a performance from the Zig Zag Band at the Arms from 9pm. in the garden You’ve got the presents, done the mammoth food shop and you even know what you are wearing to the office party – but what about the garden? Here, gardening expert, Pippa Greenwood, shares her list of Christmas jobs for a perfect garden this spring As winter is definitely with us, it is good to be able to calm down a little when it comes to gardening, to take stock of what’s there and to dream about what it would be good to achieve in the garden over the next few seasons...but there’s still plenty to keep you occupied so, when it’s not pouring with rain or bitterly cold, get out there and enjoy some invigorating fresh air whilst you work! Make a note of those plants that look particularly good during winter – perhaps bark colour or texture, or an interesting or dramatic outline. Then make sure that, where feasible, you plant more of them in positions where you can really enjoy them next winter. Plants like this also make great Christmas gifts for friends with gardens! It is time to prune both white and redcurrants; all you need to do now is use

sharp secateurs to cut about an inch (2.5cm) off the stems. Take the opportunity to rake up fallen leaves from around the plants. The bright orange raised spots of coral spot are particularly prominent on bare winter branches of many woody shrubs and trees. Figs, maples and magnolias are especially prone. Prune infected areas back to perfectly healthy wood and bin or burn the prunings. Although often thought of as harmless this fungus can cause dieback. Adequate air circulation is essential in the greenhouse at this time of year. Wherever possible open vents and windows, but try to avoid chilling any plants with cold draughts. If necessary consider buying a small electric fan heater to keep the air warm and moving. Shut down vents and windows and close doors as soon as temperatures drop. As weather permits, tackle the vegetable plot, removing the remains of any plants which are now over and remembering to bin or burn any that are infected with diseases. When the soil is not too wet, fork in wellrotted manure and garden compost in preparation for next year’s vegetables. When it is nearly empty, take the opportunity to scrub out your water butt, rinse it thoroughly and then let it re-fill as and when it rains. Make sure that you have plenty of horticultural fleeces to hand, ready to provide at least a few degrees of frost
protection for tender plants and anything, which has been recently planted. And don’t forget that it is not just plants that may need winter protection- ensure that outside pipework and taps are well insulated to prevent freezing...or switch off at the mains to be extra safe. Ben Gander has a successful business, Gander Tax Services, a happy family and has even appeared on Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me! However, just a few years ago Ben Gander also had the mental condition obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Here he explains how he overcame the condition with the help of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and what he’s doing to overcome the stigma associated with mental illness. To have obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is to be locked into a place of repetition and frustration, where the world outside of your mind becomes a dream to aspire to. It nags at you constantly, filling you with anxiety until you finally give in to the rituals; even then, peace from the intrusive thoughts is temporary. I suffered with OCD for years, based around fears of horrific pain being inflicted on loved ones. My rituals were a complex concoction of counting, checking, coughing and the mental repeating of phrases and images. Talking about OCD to others is not easy. People say things like, “Oh I’ve got a touch of the OCD too, I need to use a bit

of tissue to open toilet doors”, then they change the subject. No one says, “I’ve got a touch of the cancer”. Then there’s the stigma of mental illness. It’s not like you’ve got a bad leg, the brain is the essence of who we are; it goes down to our very existence. My OCD came to a head in France. I had to hold my daughter at the same time as carrying out a ritual. My wife locked them in the car. I tried to get in. The traffic stopped, people came to help, the ambulance took me away; I tried to break free, they pinned me down and sedated me, after six days in a mental hospital they sent me home to carry on as normal. In a matter of days, I was back in hospital. It’s a lonely environment where all you can do is think; the perfect breeding ground for OCD. Soon I was in the intensive care unit. It was there that I began to turn my life around. My wife was crucial, she worked tirelessly to get me the help I needed - cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The NHS were reluctant to provide it and seemed content to leave me in the hospital and supply medication. When I finally got the CBT, I threw myself into it. My brain had failed me, so I gave up on it and relied completely on the therapy. Every session involved doing things that made me feel something bad would happen to my daughter that day; I would go to bed each night worrying. The
next day I would phone my wife who would confirm that our daughter was fine. With each session, the stupidity of OCD was reinforced and, bit by bit, its hold on me wore off. By December 2007, I could return home in time for Christmas. Within four months of starting the CBT, I was free of my OCD. Since then, I have started my own business, which is doing very well, I have written and published ‘OCD & Me’, which tells my story, I do talks on OCD, act on stage, have appeared on TV shows, and now have two lovely daughters, for whom I will do anything. Petersfield based author, Michael Arnold, has always been fascinated with the English Civil War and its connection with the local area. This inspired him to write the Civil War Chronicles, an acclaimed series of historical thrillers that see battle-scarred hero Captain Stryker,‘the Sharpe of the Civil War’, take on his oldest foe. Here we chat to him about the latest in the series, Hunter’s Rage
A whole lot of
history
How would you describe Hunter’s Rage in one sentence? An action-packed historical thriller, set during the turbulent years of the English Civil War. What inspired you to write Hunter’s Rage? Hunter’s Rage itself is the story of the Civil War in the south-west. When researching the location, I realised what an amazing (true) story it was, and knew immediately that I wanted people to know about it. The book, though, is the third in a series and the inspiration for the Civil War Chronicles which, as a whole, was far more local. Living in Petersfield, one is often confronted by names and places from the era. Langrish House Hotel, John Goodyer’s house in The Spain, the bullet riddled church at Alton, or the battlefield at Cheriton to name but a few. I just felt that the Civil War’s influence on this part of the country was too important to ignore. How long did the novel take to write? The books take about a year to complete. A month of research, perhaps eight months of writing, and the rest for editing. How did you become interested in history? I’ve always been interested in history. It was one of my favourite subjects at school and I’ve carried that enthusiasm with me into my writing. Would you ever like to write a modern day novel? Not really! Perhaps I will one day, but at the moment I’m only interested in telling stories from the past. 42

How factual are your novels? The main plot lines in my novels are, of course, fictitious. Captain Stryker is a figment of my imagination so anything that happens to him is too. I don’t, however, deliberately change any of the historical facts. So dates, locations, military detail and the high-level political and religious aspects of the books are as close to reality as I can possibly get them. How do you start writing one of your novels? As I’m now writing the fourth instalment of a series, I already have the starting point (i.e. where the last book finished) so in that regard it’s easier for me than if I were writing a stand-alone novel. I do, however, have to decide where the characters will go and which ‘real’ events I want to describe. So I begin by looking at the date at which I want to set the book, then look through the real histories to see what was going on at the time. Once I’ve decided on the central theme (for instance, the fourth book will be based around the real-life Siege of Gloucester), I can then look to inventing some fictitious plot lines in order to get my characters in the right place at the right time. How important is the research for your novels? Hugely important, as the need for getting the major historical details correct is paramount. Obviously, I will always make the odd mistake but one hopes the majority of the background themes will be as accurate as possible.
When do you write your best material? Whenever my five year old son isn’t trying to ‘help’. He’s just started school, so the most productive time now is between 9am and 3pm! Can readers enjoy Hunter’s Rage without reading the entire series? Absolutely. As I’ve said, it’s the third in a series following the same group of characters, so the ideal scenario is to read them all in sequence. But I write each with the awareness that many readers will not come to the Civil War Chronicles at Book 1 (Traitor’s Blood) and have therefore made sure that each novel ‘stands up’ as a good read in its own right. How many books do you see in the series? I think the series will be at least ten or twelve books long, but there’s always scope to extend that if people keep reading! What advice would you give to someone considering writing a novel? Read a lot. The more fiction you read, the more you’ll get to understand how to structure a novel, how to pace the scenes and write dialogue. Once you are reasonably comfortable with those aspects, it is a matter of discipline. Sit down and write the story. Make time each day to get at least a couple of hundred words down and keep at it. Added to this is the abundance of employment case law which can have an impact on the way businesses should treat their workers. Recent examples of this include the issue of long term sick leave and the accrual of holiday, and age discrimination. Time for tea Durleighmarsh Farm Shop customers are thrilled that the long awaited tearoom at Durleighmarsh farm has finally opened. “Many loyal farm shop customers have been asking for a cafe on site for over twenty years!”, said Angela Henslow who runs the Tea barn with her son. 45 years of design Gordon Clue, of Clulite, is celebrating his 70th birthday and 45 years of designing and manufacturing torches for the British industry. Gordon founded Clulite in 1971 when he recognised a gap in the market for a powerful, electric rechargeable, hand held search and work lamp. Gordon Clue This first torch was manufactured from 18-gauge aluminium which had a tough non corrosive plastic route. Within a short period of time small batches of 20 were increased to 200 resulting in the need for Gordon and his wife, Cynthia, to relocate to larger premises.
