hen the sun shine brings bright colour through the gap in my curtains and wakes me up before my alarm clock I spring out of bed feeling ready to start the busy day ahead.

Row-a-thon

T

wo members of the Champneys Forest Mere fitness team and one of the regular club members have taken on the Thames in aid of Dogs for the Disabled.

Tom Callingham, Alex Manon and Philip Laws together rowed 346,000 metres in alternating half-hour stretches to achieve a continuous 27-hour row on Champneys' gym rowers.

The Row-a-thon was part of the 2010 Champneys Charity Challenge. Club members and staff have been encouraged to swim, lift, walk, run, row or cycle in the gym or outdoors to raise money for charity.

Between all four Champneys’ resorts the aim is to raise £11,000 to fund the sponsorship of an assistance dog for its lifetime. The money will allow a puppy to be partnered with one family with an autistic child.

“The dogs give you the confidence to be independent,” says Sarah Carr, who has already benefited from the partnership of Demi, a lab-retriever cross. “Demi is a local celebrity where we live.”

The Charter Fair, which claims to be “the biggest event in Haslemere, is on Bank Holiday Monday 3 May in the High Street, West Street, and Central Car Park from 1 to 5pm.

This free fair makes a wonderful day out for all the family. There will be 100 stalls offering you a wide range of products and services – and traditional fairground rides, animals, and entertainments of all sorts.

Haslemere’s Got Talent returns Following the success of the inaugural event in 2009, Haslemere’s Got Talent returns with an even more spectacular programme of events . By Johanna Sökeland

aslemere’s Got Talent takes to the Haslemere Hall stage on Sunday 25 April 2010.

After last year’s wealth of talent, this year’s show sees fit to be an entertaining and closely-fought contest. Proceeds from the show

go towards the Haslemere Hall Roof Fund.

“We are also hoping to have a West End celebrity guest judge at the final, so it’s already shaping up to be bigger and better than ever!” says Claire Goyer, the

Wheely wonderful Haslemere Festival presents two exciting events in May Cycling Sportive: 16 May The first Little Lumpy Cycle Sportive was part of the Haslemere Festival in May 2009.

It was so successful that it is becoming an annual event, so as not to disappoint the many riders who took part and vowed to return.

Last year it was a perfect (possibly a bit hot for some) day for cycling and there were more than 400 riders, of all ages and abilities and from all over the UK (one rider came from Dumfries). This year the organizers are hoping for 800.

The Continentals, with a long tradition of competitive and leisure riding, have held mass-start cycle sportives for decades. They are not meant to be competitive and so there are no prizes for places – insurance would be a problem if the event was advertised as competitive.

Riders receive graded Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates for finishing within set times for each distance. So, the competitive instinct is satisfied without it being a race.

Many riders treat it as a fantastic excuse to take part in an organised ride, fully signposted, and guiding them to some of the loveliest back roads that regular road users know in the area. Not only do we time you and direct you round the courses, but we feed and water you as well. So all you have to do is bring your bike and your determination.

Start: Tanners Lane Car Park, off Tanners Lane and West Street, Haslemere GU27 1JF. Sign on and get a number to be attached to the front of the bike.

Three courses: Epic, 109 miles (175 km), start from 8am; Challenge, 66 miles, start from

Cycling Sportive, www.littlelumpy.co.uk Classic Car Show & Tour: 30 May The 2010 Haslemere Classic Car Show and Tour on 30 May promises to be bigger and better this year. Bring your pre-1973 Classic vehicle along and join in the fun.

The day will be in two parts: a tour will start from Lion Green at 10am and follow a relaxed drive through the beautiful countryside taking in some local points of interest - including a special visit (a different route to 2009). The Tour will arrive back at Lion Green at approximately 1pm to park up for the Show.

Participants are free to choose to do the Tour, the Show or both.

The first event last year had over 80 cars on the green, from

Those selected to perform will be notified at the audition and will appear in the show on the following Sunday 25 April. Of the acts taking part, three will be selected by the judges on the night, with the audience having the final vote at the end.

Bed of nails The intrepid Haslemere Town Mayor Melanie Odell will add her own particular lustre to the 2010 show by lying on a bed of nails.

Cllr Odell will perform in aid of her two Mayoral charities – The Haslemere Educational Museum and the male cancer charity Everyman. She can be sponsored either by direct donation or by sponsoring a nail or more for the ‘bed’ at R. Miles and Son in West Street, as the hardware store is kindly donating both nails and the board she will lie on at the show.

Her mentor for the daredevil act is Ray Cimino, a former professional circus and stunt performer, who is one of the three judges for the competition. a tiny Subaru 360 to a RollsRoyce Silver Ghost, Minis to Bentleys and everything inbetween. The organizers hope to improve on this in 2010 with several car clubs intending to make it a club event.

The Tour will cost £10 for the driver and £5 per additional adult to include the route, private visit, breakfast rolls and hot drink at the start, a tour plaque and a charity donation.

As numbers for the Tour will be limited, please enter early. The Show is free. Please contact us if you are interested in a stall or club stand.

House prices

The property market in the UK may suffer a double-dip recession, according to figures released in March, and the picture in the Haslemere area is little brighter, either for sales or for lettings. Nick Keith reports

P

rices in March rose by 0.1 per cent compared to February, according to property website Rightmove. This was the smallest margin for this time of the year, when prices have never fallen month on month.

This comes at a time when other factors are contributing to a slowdown in the economy, with people bracing themselves against public sector spending cuts, unemployment growth, and likely higher interest rates.

While this may be a temporary downturn, resulting from bad weather conditions earlier in the year, there are also fears that this could be part of a longerterm trend. Any setback to the housing sales market also has an impact on lettings.

Denise Gardiner, Director of Property Services (Haslemere) says that the housing market in general is at a standstill, and this is the same for both sales and lettings. “My company is fine with our portfolio of many top end managed properties in the area,” she said. “But it’s no secret that things are difficult because the stock is not available. The market is stalled and stymied.”

Founded in 1970, Property Services are family-run independent lettings specialists, who say they have a “fine reputation for sourcing high quality properties for discerning tenants” in and around Haslemere. They have plenty of clients looking for rental property.

“It’s always a difficult time

before a General Election when it [the property market] grinds to a halt,” Denise Gardiner adds. “We are in ‘no man’s land’ before the election.”

If you are a buyer, or looking to rent, and seek a “discreet” property, Corniche Estates operate in Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire – concentrating on houses in the £800,000 to the £5 million bracket. They too report a shortage of supply but plenty of demand.

Andy Coe, the firm’s marketing manager, puts that down to the forthcoming election and to the difficulty of getting a mortgage. “We have experienced a surge before and after Christmas,” he says.

“Then there was a halt with the bad January weather, and things have started to improve in March since the sun has come out”.

Corniche has recently let a

house in Rake and has available the five-bedroom Toby’s Cottage in Petersfield., The Country House Company covers a wide 60-mile area including Berkshire in the north, Surrey in the centre, Hampshire in the south, Sussex in the east, and Dorset in the west. The firm specializes in “nice country houses of all descriptions”.

On the website the firm displays a good range of property, although founder Sue Crossley agrees that “stock is hard to achieve, but we have a good reputation and a strong portfolio”. She is not convinced that this situation will necessarily improve after the election.

“We are getting a lot of renewals [of rental properties] at the moment,” she adds.

People are sitting still waiting for the market to improve with more houses on view.

Adrian Law at Kelway Law remains positive and believes that the current paralysis in the market could be freed after the election.

Nationwide and Halifax reported house price falls in February.

Nationwide said average prices dipped 1pc to £161,320, ending a run of nine consecutive monthly rises. Halifax reported an even sharper fall of 1.5pc, with average house prices dropping to £166, 857.

Halifax forecasts zero growth in prices for the year, whereas they were boosted last year by very low interest rates, few properties on the market, and cash-rich buyers.

The Ernst & Young ITEM Club has predicted house prices will fall 1.4 per cent this year, before a slow recovery in 2011.The National Institute for Economic and Social Research has forecast a fall of just under 1 per cent in prices this year, and by almost 3.5pc in 2011. This compares to a 16 per cent fall in 2008 and a 6pc rise in prices last year.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has said that, during February, the number of people selling their home rose more quickly than the number of potential new buyers registering with agents for the second consecutive month.

The 258 house-hunters registering with estate agents during the month was the lowest level for a year and down from 291 in January, according to the National Association of Estate Agents.

The lack of houses for sale helped to push up prices in 2009, but it is expected that more homes will come on to the market, especially in the summer after the General Election, and this could push prices down again, according to many economists.

Rental market The supply of new properties coming on to the rental market has fallen for the second consecutive quarter possibly bringing an end to the downward trend in rents that has been in place since the autumn of 2008, says the latest RICS Lettings Survey.

The net balance of chartered surveyors reporting rising rather than falling rents in the three months to January 2010 was zero. This follows five quarters of negative readings, and is in marked contrast to April last year when 58 per cent more chartered surveyors were reporting falling rents, an all-time low for the survey. And a net balance of 33 per cent of respondents believe rents will rise over the coming quarter (up from 22 per cent). The improvement for rents reflects the continued decline in supply of both flats and houses.

Kickboxing Kickboxing for example is a fun, fast and social activity that builds strength and works on cardio. It can burn up to 1100 calories an hour and helps improve your speed, balance and endurance.

Set to upbeat music or outdoors, it’s a great way to build confidence and learn self-defence. With a praising trainer like Gayle and commentary like ‘…three more, you’re not sweating yet’ it’s hard not to feel motivated and push yourself to work your hardest.

Crossfit Crossfit is another upbeat and energetic way to train that keeps you on your toes so that you get

• Plan your day so you don’t end up in the car with a chocolate bar or packet of crisps • Eat breakfast and then eat little and often • Eat a handful of nuts a day • Be aware of liquid calories • Don’t deprive yourself of the foods you enjoy; this will only get you down.

Improve your image To look good on the beach no matter what size you are, you need to learn how to make the most of your body. Life in Haslemere talked to image consultant Tanya Chainey to discover that no matter what size you are, you can

look sexy in that swimsuit.

First of all, colours are important. Choose ones that work in harmony with your own natural colouring. For instance, if you are of light colouring, go for swimwear with light to medium colours. On the other hand if you have warmth in you hair – such as reds or strawberry blondes – go for warm colours such as reds and browns.

Dressing is all about showing off your best assets. If you have a waist, you’re lucky; if not, you need to create one. To add emphasis on certain areas, you want to add detail. For straight frames, wear patterned bikinis with bows or ties at the sides to enhance your curves. For pearshaped figures, keep the bottom simple with no detail on the hips to draw the eye to the widest part of your body.

One-pieces are back this year. A low v-neck is great for a good bust or a short neck and to enhance a waist wear a panelled swimsuit or one that gathers at the waist.

Make legs look longer with a high leg and beware of shorts that end at the widest part of your leg; to create an illusion of slimmer legs, your clothes need to stop at the thinnest part.

Wear lots of accessories this year – they’ll make you feel less naked and exposed while in your swimsuit. Paint your nails too, so that you feel you’ve made an effort, bright colours are in – aqua and emerald green and reds and hot pinks. Nautical is hot this year too but remember this valuable rule; horizontal lines add curves and vertical take away.

Make-up should remain natural.

Tanya recommends wearing a tinted moisturiser with a SPF, and a small bit of cream blusher to add a bit of colour and define cheeks. Waterproof mascara is also a must.

In warm water

A

wide range of warm water classes have been introduced at The Physiotherapy Centre at Holy Cross Hospital, Haslemere.

The water classes will help various conditions, and represent yet another improvement to this award-winning centre, which offers a gym, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and sports massage.

Karen Ford, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at the Centre, says: “Our small classes are an inexpensive way that people can contribute significantly to their own recovery from injury or operations.”

The classes take place in the 14

hydrotherapy pool where the temperature of the water is set at 33 degrees C to promote pain relief. Rehabilitation in warm water is often recommended when injuries are acute, as it is more comfortable than exercising on land, but has the same results.

Karen adds, “We keep class numbers small so we can ensure individual attention for every participant, so they get the help that they need.”

The new classes include: Joints in Motion, a new warm water exercise class for people with arthritic conditions, back or joint problems. It is a therapeutic class

aimed at improving strength, endurance and flexibility.

Lower Limb Water Gym focuses on lower limb (hip, knee, ankle) problems, for people who may suffer from osteoarthritis or have had joint replacement surgery such as a hip replacement. Backsplash is for people with back pain whether it is acute or chronic. Back pain is very common and can be caused by slipped discs, arthritis or following an operation.

he new Amarna Spa manager has come “back down to reality” after a series of glamorous jobs on cruise liners Having spent the last nine years travelling the world on board luxury cruise liners, Fiona Smith has become the new manager at Amarna Spa, Lythe Hill Hotel.

Born in Steyning, West Sussex, Fiona started out as an aerobics instructor and personal trainer and developed an interest in the spa industry working on cruise ships.

She became first a gym manager and then a spa manager for several big cruise lines.

While she was with Royal Caribbean she had the glamorous job as the ship’s social host. Her duties included escorting the captain to all functions, attending cocktail parties and helping to entertain the guests. After that she returned to spa management on board the P&O ship Arcadia, where she was responsible for 25 staff.

“There is nothing nicer than being in the Caribbean,” says Fiona. “It is a fantastic lifestyle but sooner or later you have to come back down to reality.” For Fiona it was the call of home that brought her back to the area to manage Amarna Spa. She plans to expand the range of treatments on offer, with additional treatment rooms and another product house to complement the Elemis range. “I want to create a proper relaxation room,” says Fiona. “The expansion will be along holistic lines – it’s the way forward.”

A recent recruit to Fiona’s team is Victoria Brockhurst, a personal trainer who is also an experienced sports therapist and the main pre-race sports masseuse for the runners in the London Marathon.

Fiona is looking to extend the classes on offer to members and non-members – a timetable is available from reception. There are now three sessions per week of Aquacize in the pool; new classes are planned for the fitness studio, including Boxercize.

rom 1 to 9 May Haslemere Garden Centre in Brook will stage a series of events from weekend to weekend to help and encourage people to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

“There is a big interest among people who want to produce their own edible crops,” said Laurie Rawlins, the Manager, “and this has rejuvenated in the last two years.”

He explained that garden centres were fairly “bullet-proof ” in financial recessions, when people looked increasingly to grow some of their own food, and discovered the benefits of

eating fresh fruit and vegetables straight from their own gardens.

Some people may like the idea of growing their own produce but find the whole prospect daunting.

“We focus on being a gardeners’ garden centre,” he added, “and we want to help people grow their own.” Haslemere Garden Centre was also starting an online growyour-own tipping service and email club in April.

Laurie Rawlins has worked for 15 years at the centre, previously a family business which was acquired nine years ago by World of Water, “aquatic superstores” with 21 outlets nationwide.

Haslemere Garden Centre has re-established its own brand on its large acreage on the A286 between Haslemere and Milford.

Laurie and his staff of 10 (four part-time) have been preparing diligently and excitedly for the big event in May. “We are building up our stock of plants and we will have workshops through the

week with displays of growing vegetables and fruit in a variety of containers – such as raised beds, guttering and sacks.”

This promises to be a fruitful spring and summer in the gardens of many local people.

ary Vickers of Amity has won the latest Buy in Grayshott (BIG) Award for Best Dressed Shop. She pipped Blaze House Art, which finished second for the second year running.

The exciting finale of the awards took place at a superb and packed dinner party at the Fox and Pelican, Grayshott.

The two shops were initially tied for first place, so an independent mystery shopper had been sent out to choose a winner. Amity received the trophy, a bottle of champagne and a large framed certificate from Cllr Sam James, the Hampshire County Councillor representative for Grayshott.

Judging takes place twice a year, in the spring and winter, with marks awarded in three categories: cleanliness, shop display and general shop appearance. Marks are added up, but results are kept a close secret until the presentation

dinner. Dick Smith, chairman of BIG, said that standards seemed to be higher than ever and it was becoming ever more difficult separating many of the businesses.

Framed certificates were presented to both winners and runners-up in each category, as well as the overall winner with over-all runner-up. The four category winners were Enchantment, Gurkha Durbar Nepalese Restaurant, Grayshott Books, and Simmons Interiors.

The runners-up were Amelie, Grayshott Pottery, Kaighin & Daughter, and Zaman Opticians.

Cllr James said that HCC would contribute £1,000 from the devolved fund to the “Grayshott in Bloom” scheme run by the BIG campaign.

uperstition took over again on 11 March when the Naked Grape wine merchants opened its third shop – this time in Grayhsott. “We’ve always opened our shops on the 11th,” says Simon Evans, Director.

‘Paint a gift’

ver 30 young people, as well as adults, took part in Grayshott Pottery's first 'Paint a Gift' pottery painting session.

Glenn Myers, Production Director, said, “We were really delighted with the response to this event.” This event is one of a series of events planned by the Pottery for visitors and residents

Human i-pod at Barrow Hills Barrow Hills School, in Witley has hosted a series of fundraising concerts by the world-famous pianist, Derek Paravicini (pictured below)

D

erek Paravicini is blind and so he plays everything from memory. He has earned a reputation as ‘the human i-pod’, inviting requests from the audience.

In February, he gave three performances at Barrow Hills, to an audience of nearly 500 people aged from six upwards, and performed every request. The concerts were held to raise funds for St Benedict’s School in Burkina Faso in Africa with which Barrow Hills is linked in friendship.

The link between the two schools began in 2003 when Barrow Hills pre-prep raised £200 to buy two bicycles, enabling two children to be able to get to school in Burkina Faso. Since then the Barrow Hills community has supported St Benedict’s in a variety of ways. Thousands of pounds have been raised for various projects.

Last year Barrow Hills raised more than £16,000 for a new classroom block, including a library and IT room. This year, the aim is to help furnish and equip this new block and to buy mosquito nets.

On this fundraising day all the children

came to school in red, yellow and green mufti – the colours of the Burkina Faso national flag. The children in Year 8 led the morning assembly with a PowerPoint presentation in French (the language spoken in Burkina Faso) describing a typical school day at Barrow Hills. This presentation has been taken to St Benedict’s, to be shown to the children.

When Derek Paravicini started the first of his three performances to the children in the junior-prep department in the afternoon, the children clapped and cheered loudly. He followed with performances to the older children and, in the evening, to parents and guests from the local community. Donations continue to come in and the money raised has exceeded £4,000. As a result a mosquito net can be bought for every child at St Benedict’s, and the building constructed last year will be fully furnished.

ohn Attwater recently became headmaster of King Edward’s School Witley. Having lived in and around Petersfield from the aged of four to 18, he was Deputy Head at Sevenoaks School, with responsibility for the Co-Curriculum.

Educated at Rugby School, John graduated from The Queen’s College, Oxford, with first class honours in PPE. He will oversee the adoption of the International Baccalaureate as the school’s sole curriculum offered in the Sixth Form.

Says deputy head Gwyn Phillips: “The IB was introduced at King Edward’s in 2004 and has been a great success. Our 100% pass rate for the past five years makes us the 11th best performing IB School in the UK in 2009.”

wo students at Godalming College are celebrating call-ups to national sports squads.

First team netball player Rebecca Cornish has taken part in her first training weekend with the National British Colleges team in Lincoln.

Currently studying for her A-levels this summer, Rebecca was one of nine players from the south east region picked for the national trials, her first step on the England Netball Talent development scheme.

Callum Edwards was selected to play his first competitive match with the England Colleges national rugby squad against Welsh opposition.

Seven students from Godalming have qualified for the British College Sport (BCS) national finals. They are Ciara Dullaghan and Bethan Hubbard (cross country), Emma Wardle (squash), Jacob Waller (trampolining), Chloe Hammond-Smith and John Hargon (swimming), and Andrew Thorne (golf).

Sian Parry, further education sports coordinator and a coach at Godalming, says, “Reaching national finals in any sport is a brilliant achievement. This reflects the depth of talent that we have.”

Also appearing were StopGAP Youth Dance Company, Actual Size Dance Company from Surrey University, Godalming Junior School and dancers from the college’s street dance group ManUp and GD2 Youth Dance Company.

Class Action is the performance company at Godalming College and features students as performers, technicians, choreographers, musicians, assistant directors, producers and front of house staff.

Hike for Haiti

n Wednesday 10 March, the entire Prior’s Field School community hiked five miles across the Surrey countryside to raise money for Haiti and the Disasters Emergency Committee.

The idea for the hike came from the pupils themselves, and a www.justgiving.com website was set up a few days in advance to encourage sponsorship.

Parents became involved too, with Mr Phil Hardy from Disub Express producing special Hike for Haiti lanyards which were sold to girls and staff in the run up to the event.

Julie Roseblade, the Head, was delighted to see so many parents, governors and dogs joining in on the day: “It’s amazing what can be done when an entire community comes together. The pupils themselves asked to do this, to show that we can make a difference when there is need. We have been delighted with the response.”

Funds for ‘quake

S

tudents and staff of Mill Chase Community Technology College have come up with an educational way of raising money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Students were given a lesson regarding the geography of Haiti and a short history of the country, including the poverty its inhabitants have lived in for many years and how this has be worsened by the devastation caused by the earthquake.

A group of geography students drew an outline map of Haiti on the floor of the school gym so that other students could fill in the outline with any loose change they happened to have.

Students have previously taken part in a nonuniform day for this worthwhile cause, and the total raised amounted to £950.

Baked Raspberry Cheesecake

Two members of the Life in Haslemere team have brushed up on their cooking skills

Ingredients 175g digestive biscuits 75g melted butter + extra for greasing 170g raspberries, plus a few extra for decoration 450g cream cheese 150g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 4 eggs, beaten icing sugar, to dust

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Butter the sides and base of a 20cm cake tin.

2. Put the digestive biscuits into the freezer bag and crush with the rolling pin.

3. Melt the butter in the saucepan, take off the heat and stir in the biscuit crumbs. Press over the base of the cake tin. Spread the raspberries over the base.

Leave to set.

4. Beat together the cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract and eggs. Pour the mixture over the top of the raspberries. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes, or until it is pale golden, and wobbles only slightly.

5. Allow to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then run a knife around the edge to loosen the sides. Carefully remove the cheesecake from the tin.

Transfer to a serving plate.

Leave to cool.

6. Sprinkle over the remaining raspberries and dust with icing sugar.

new dining club helps members to eat out affordably at top-class restaurants across the south of England.

Founder Roger Mallock aims to offer exclusive discounts at a wide range of renowned hotels and restaurants in the south, including London. His Restaurant Members Club (RMC) is really taking off.

Roger has spent his working life in the travel trade and has set up other dining clubs for hotels.

The club is community-based, he says, focusing on local people and eating establishments within easy reach.

Method 1. In a large saucepan, melt the butter. Add the chopped onions and gently cook for 10 minutes, or until soft.

2. Pour in the stock. Bring it up to the boil. Add the spinach, stirring until it is all wilted, then add the peas and the mint. Simmer for 5 minutes.

3. Transfer to a food processor and process until smooth.

Return the soup to the saucepan. Add the cream and season to taste.

4. Serve with a drizzle of double cream and garnish with mint leaves.

Rich repertoire of comedy, Roof repairs music and drama Chichester Festival Theatre’s exciting programme for 2010

T

he fifth season at Chichester from Artistic Director Jonathan Church and Executive Director Alan Finch opens with Bingo by Edward Bond, from 15 April to 22 May at the Minerva Theatre, starring Patrick Stewart, who plays an ageing William Shakespeare in the last days of his life.

The original writers of the classic TV series Yes, Prime Minister, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, reunite for a world premiere of their new play. Sir Humphrey Appleby will be played by Henry Goodman and Jim Hacker by David Haig.

A brand new musical version

by Howard Goodall of Erich Segal’s Love Story plays in the Minerva Theatre from 29 May to 26 June. Goodall’s credits include the television theme tunes for QI, Blackadder and The Vicar of Dibley.

42nd Street is one of the most high-octane musicals of all time, in the Festival Theatre from 21 June to 28 August. Showstopping tunes include ‘Lullaby Of Broadway’, ‘We’re In The Money’, and ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’.

In a delightful double bill the theatre critic takes centre stage – 2 July to 28 August (Minerva). In The Critic, Sheridan parodies the theatrical conventions of the 18th Century. In Tom Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound, two critics blunder out of the auditorium and into the whodunit they have come to review.

From 9 July to 27 August in the Festival Theatre, Rupert Everett plays Professor Henry Higgins in Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. He is joined by Stephanie Cole as his mother Mrs Higgins, in a welcome return to Chichester.

A new adaptation by Howard Brenton of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell is another world premiere at the Minerva from (15 July to 26 August). This story of working men promises to be colourful, thought-provoking and funny.

Michael Pennington returns to Chichester as Halvard Solness, the leading architect of his age, in Ibsen’s The Master Builder. This is a world premiere of a new

adaptation by David Edgar, from 9 September to 9 October at the Minerva Theatre.

Solness is inspired by a beautiful young woman to create one final masterpiece.

The award-winning Enron returns to Chichester from 10 to 18 September, this time on the main stage of the Festival Theatre for 10 performances only, before a national tour. This groundbreaking play by Lucy Prebble (who grew up in Haslemere) has been nominated for six Olivier Awards. The winners will be named in London on 21 March.

A Month in the Country by Ivan Turgenev is on the main Festival Theatre stage from 24 September to 16 October. Brian Friel, one of Ireland’s greatest living playwrights, has adapted Turgenev’s 19th century classic.

After a year’s fundraising, £105,000 has been collected towards repairing the roof of Haslemere Hall, which was built in 1913. This is enough to get the project started and replace the slates, but £28,000 is still needed to cover remedial works, including replacing the loft insulation.

ichard Oldham, the manager, said: “The Hall provides the main cultural and entertainment facility for Haslemere and the surrounding rural areas. It has a well-used cinema, which is accessible to young and elderly people who would otherwise have to travel 13 miles to Guildford.

“Last year over 58,000 people visited the building; 26,832 of these attended live performances, cinema screenings and events. A wide range of local organizations who use the hall for their weekly activities also contribute to the annual footfall.

“The Hall is committed to providing a cultural amenity, which serves all sectors of the community and is exploring new approaches to audience development with cultural providers in Surrey.

“Repairing the roof will ensure that the building is preserved for the next 100 years so that future generations can continue to benefit from it. The Hall is a major asset to both Haslemere and the Borough and is highly valued by the community.”

Free theatre tickets

F

ree tickets are now on offer to people aged under 26 for all plays on Chichester Festival Theatre stage during the 2010 season.

This new initiative has been launched nationwide as part of Arts Council England’s ‘A Night Less Ordinary’ scheme in association with Metro. The scheme has pledged to give away 618,000 tickets to anyone aged under 26 in more than 200 venues across the country.

The productions in the Festival Theatre during the 2010 season are: Yes, Prime Minister (13 May to 5 June); 42nd Street (21 June to 28 August); Pygmalion (9 July to 27 August); ENRON (10 to 18 September); and A Month in the Country (24 September to 16 October).

The Arts Council seeks to reach people of all ages who

do not engage with the arts, as part of its mission to get great art to everyone. Attendance at arts events usually drops in the 18-26 age range. Moving on Catherine Morrow explores the joys and sorrows of moving house

I

moved from South West London, with my husband and two children because we wanted to swap hustle and bustle for a calmer semi-rural existence. We rented for six months and recently bought a family house in the heart of Haslemere. That’s the good news, the bad news is we have to pack up our belongings … again.

Moving is a great excuse to de-clutter – especially when you have children, Lucy 3, and Harry nearly 2, have too many toys languishing at the bottom of their toy box. I decide to wait for both of them to be out of the house to sort out their toys.

I used to think one teddy was enough, but I was reliably informed, by another mother, that when holding a teddy bear’s tea party, you need more than one teddy to attend. So, I kept big ted, little and medium sized ted, but couldn’t justify average sized teddy - so he went in the bag.

I also discovered a box of tiny

white, baby grows that had been worn when my little ones were only a few days old. I know it’s ridiculous, but I wasn’t ready to let them go just yet. Toys I have no attachment to but these pristine baby clothes laid out in front of me hold very special memories.

After rooting around for a few hours, I was delighted with the pile of toys I’d accumulated, some toys were duplicated, so that was an easy decision and I decided we only needed one pair of fairy wings. Other rejects included scary plastic dolls with no souls and books that had never been loved. I meticulously put all the toys in a bag ready to go to the charity shop and felt an overwhelming sense of satisfaction.

That is until… my daughter, Lucy, returns from pre-school and makes a bee-line for the bag of toys. “Are these for me, just me?” She’s caught me out. Every toy is gleefully pulled out of the bag, one after the other and each one with a compliment: “I was wondering where this teddy had gone, I love this, it is my most favourite toy in the whole wide world.” She even thanked me for

sorting out her toys so that she could play with them. My topsecret mission to de-clutter was blown.

Oh dear, what’s a mother to do?

They are her toys, but she hadn’t taken any notice of them until TODAY! So, I did the only thing I could do, with a clear conscience and heavy heart I decided to sort out my own bursting-at-the-seams wardrobe. Maybe when we move to the next house I can tackle the toy box for the second time.

Leading local motor racer Anna Walewska has joined the Alan Blencowe Racing (ABR) team and in 2010 again races in the VW Cup

H

indhead-based motor racing ace Anna Walewska will drive a Volkswagen MK5 Golf GTI in the VW Cup this season. Having finished seventh overall in the VW Cup last season (her first), her aim for 2010 is to achieve a top three finish – but she would love to win the championship.

Anna, who is 23, featured on the cover of Life in Haslemere in December 2007. When she was 14, she became the youngest racing driver to hold a full race licence.

“I am looking forward to the start of the season and working with Alan Blencowe Racing,” Anna said. “After a solid last season I can put my experience into this year and look forward to a successful 2010.”

She had two days of track testing in February and another two in March. “The car shakedown at Silverstone in February was the first outing in 2010,” she told Life in Haslemere, “since the development work done to the car over the winter – a refreshed gearbox, differentials,

and brakes. We had a very successful day with only minor teething problems, which were soon put right by ABR. “Now I am concentrating on fine-tuning the race car and myself in preparation for the start of the VW Championship at Oulton Park on the Easter weekend. I am supported by Nitron shocks (suspension) and they will be working closely with me throughout the season and in testing to develop bespoke shocks for VW race cars.”

The race car is based on a VW Golf MK5 GTI 240bhp.

It weighs about 1200kg, and runs on slick tyres. Suspension, brakes and some engine parts are upgraded to motorsport spec.

Anna has a strict diet and trains every other day, on weights and CV workouts. “I am being trained by GB Fitness (www. gbfitness.com) who are working with athletes all over the UK including footballers, althletes and rugby players.”

Goodwood will host its first major golf tournament this summer with the Business Fort English PGA Championship in association with Cobra and 59club from 22-24 July

he award-winning 7,104 yard Downs Course, designed by the legendary James Braid, has been selected by the Professional Golfers Association, the game's governing body. English PGA Professionals will compete for a top prize of £5,000 in the £30,000 prize fund. The winner will also win a place in the 2011 English Open on the PGA European Tour.

The event promises to yield a strong field of 144, with exemptions for last year's GB & Ireland PGA Cup Team, the PGA Assistants' Champion and Senior PGA Professional Champion plus the top five from each of the PGA's seven regional Order of Merits, if they match the eligibility criteria.
