In this issue we start with a feature on Weddings – some questions and answers from experts on how to plan your wedding. There are more tips for readers in the Gifts section, with ideas for presents for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day in April, and in Interiors, for giving your home a fresh spring look. Brides’ dreads revisi Haslemere experts have the answer to wedding dilemmas Dress Q. I have been to countless wedding dress shops, spoken to a number of designers and searched through thousands of beautiful dresses, how will I know when I’ve found the perfect gown? A. Oh dear, oh dear what a tragic tale, A never ending search and to no avail, Where oh where can this illusive frock be found? Inspiration is needed, help from the gods, divine intervention or maybe just a designer, who will take this onerous burden and set you free to enjoy your life again as a happy bride to be! Katherine Cusack, Couture wedding dress designer, 01798 861365, www.katherinecusack.com Rings Q. My husband and I are looking for wedding rings. I want to make them personal and bespoke to us but I’m not sure how. A. At Objets d’Art we offer many ways to make your jewellery extra special and personal. We can get your rings hand-made to any design; we can add stones such as diamonds to make them sparkle. Our team of skilled craftsmen can engrave on the inside of your wedding rings – often people have the date, their initials or a message such as Amor Vincit Omnia (love conquers all). Wedding rings are made to last forever so we suggest strong metals such as platinum, palladium or gold. Angela French, Objets d’Art, 01428 643982 Flowers 4

Life in Haslemere

Q. Our wedding is in the summer, what are my options when it comes to flowers that are affordable and seasonal? A. Choose beautiful English country garden flowers – a perfect option for summer weddings – such as a mix of roses, including some spray roses to add interest. Scented flowers are a must. Tops for fragrance are stocks and sweet peas, preferably English grown. For taller arrangements, use striking delphinium spikes or more delicate larkspur. If you buy pot plants you can cut the flowers and save some money. Sharon Kerr, 01428 727898, www.flowersintheavenue.co.uk Honeymoon Q. There are so many destinations when it comes to booking the honeymoon, how can I narrow it down? A. Everyone has different definitions of the paradise they seek for that ultimate romantic holiday. Sit down with a knowledgeable travel consultant – ideally established, ABTA-bonded and independent – who will give you impartial advice. Trawling websites is not an ideal start for the holiday of a lifetime, you need an expert to sift through your wish-list and make your dreams a reality. Gemma Antrobus, Managing Director, Haslemere Travel, 01428 658 777, www.haslemeretravel.co.uk Photography Q. I was thinking of getting a friend to take photos on the day to keep costs down, but I’m having second thoughts. Should we use a professional photographer? A. Your wedding day is a

once in a lifetime experience. Without good photography your memories of the day will fade away. Good wedding photography is about the feel of the day and capturing those special moments. Giving a friend that responsibility is a risk that simply isn't worth taking. See as many photographers as you can and choose one that can show you lots of their previous work – which is of a style that you like. Paul Tansley, 01428 714509, www. stylishweddingphotography.com Catering Q. I have a perfect venue for a marquee reception, but it isn’t near a kitchen; can we still have the three-course meal that we wanted? A. Yes you certainly can. We will set up a catering tent and if we are providing the food it will contain everything needed to produce a delicious wedding breakfast. From commercial cookers, to all catering equipment, pots, pans, refrigeration, work tops, hot cupboards and water boilers, they will all be there. And you won't pay an extra penny, as they are all included in the menu cost. David Moodie, Moodies Marquees, 01428 644310, www.moodies.co.uk Music Q. We have many older guests attending our wedding as well as younger ones, how can I get everyone on the dance floor and make sure they have a great time? A. Twilights keep in tune with the young ones by playing a selection of current songs mixed with classics, which

for the older generation creates a wave of nostalgia. Our music brings a party atmosphere to the event and we provide a mixture that is geared towards giving everyone a chance to dance. Keith Connors, Twilights Disco, 01428 645894, www.twilightsdisco.co.uk

Award for A3 tunnel The A3 Hindhead tunnel has won an award as the best of its type in the world. Engineers Balfour Beatty collected the award at the New Civil Engineer International Tunnelling Awards in London. The judges commended the planning and execution of the £371 million project and said that the innovations introduced during the scheme were a “tremendous step forward for UK tunnelling”. Highways Agency project

manager Paul Arnold said: “The judging panel has recognized the hard work and world class innovation that has brought this major scheme to life. “Four years in, main construction on both the tunnel and the new stretch of the A3 has been successfully completed on time and on budget. The focus on economic construction saved more than £12 million.” The new road will be open to traffic in July.

Undershaw patron The Undershaw Preservation Trust, battling to save Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s old home in Hindhead (see previous issues), has a new patron. He is Mark Gatiss, actor and author of Sherlock, the brilliant BBC TV series which captured viewers’ imaginations last summer. John Gibson, Director of the Trust, has lodged legal papers in the High Court, contesting the decision by Waverley Borough Council to give planning permission for

a residential development at Undershaw. This is the house built in the 1890s for Sir Arthur, where he wrote some of the most famous Sherlock Holmes stories, including the Hound of the Baskervilles – one of the stories being adapted for the 2011 series of Sherlock by Mark Gatiss. A hearing is not expected before Spring 2011. First, the High Court must agree to hear the case and then set a date. www.saveundershaw.com

Enter Lionel Blair Lionel Blair has become the new ambassador for Churchill Retirement Living, who are building a development in Hindhead. As an actor, dancer, singer, choreographer, and quiz show presenter, Lionel is one of Britain’s favourite senior celebrities. He has a positive attitude to retirement. “Retired people have so much wisdom to pass on to the young,” he says. “Older people

More than 200 of the best practitioners from China, Hong Kong and the US.

“Foshan has been a centre for traditional kung fu for many years,” says Tom, “and is given a unique status that is taken extremely seriously by the community and the government.” Tom won the European Kung Fu Championships in 1998, and, in 2002. He was the first westerner to enter the Hong Kong Kung Fu Championships where he won a gold medal. DMAA, 07963 681880 (Tom), www.dmaa.co.uk

Off to Glyndebourne Hindhead opera lover Anna Hawtree won tickets for Glyndebourne in a sealed bid auction at Opera South‘s New Year party at the Georgian House Hotel, Haslemere, in early January. Anna, who will see Mozart’s Don Giovanni in June, said: “I have never yet seen Don Giovanni perform live, have never been to Glyndebourne and am absolutely thrilled to have been successful in winning these tickets!”

She supports local organizations such as Haslemere Decorative & Fine Arts Society (she is a committee member) and Opera South. “That is usually as close as I get to seeing top quality productions.” The tickets were donated by Greathurst Interiors, Haslemere, to raise funds for Opera South. Ian and Carolyn Underwood at Greathurst Interiors are Glyndebourne Society members, who have first access to tickets.

Spring clean your home Here are some ideas from local experts to brighten up your house Figura figures it out Storage Walls – floor to ceiling cupboards specifically designed to improve kitchen storage management – are often better than walk-in larders as they don't waste any space. A house workstation, usually in or near to the main kitchen area, can solve problems of the day-to-day paper work and computer/laptop. It can also serve as a hot desk for kids’ homework, and ordering online. TV, media and library storage is often made up of independent pieces of older and/or contemporary furniture which are not suited to the requirements of modern family living. Furniture, fitted or unfitted, can be designed to reduce large flat-screen TV impact in a room with storage for home entertainment systems, DVDs, CDs, books etc ... Figura Limited, 01428 686500 10

Freshen rooms Your living room may feel bare once cleared of Christmas decorations. Spring flowers and some bright new cushions will freshen up your room instantly. Spring is a great time to refresh your property with a lick of paint. We stock paints that are more durable than traditional oil and matt emulsion paints. They give rich unfading colours and are environmentally friendly. Simmons Interiors, 01428 608436 Bright and bold Change your cushion covers and curtains to give any interior an instant injection of fresh finesse for the spring season. Bright colours and bold design motifs are on trend this year. Store the old covers for a change when next winter comes. Put storage baskets underneath console tables in hallways and bathroom

sinks to hide the clutter of everyday items. Storage is vital in the home, especially when it comes to spring cleaning. Sue Jones, founding director of OKA, says: “We have wonderful bookcases which can be painted in a choice of colour finishes. They come with an undercoat ready for you to colour and instantly update your home.” OKA, 01428 648644 Busy Belinda Get help in dealing with clutter, paperwork, lack of space and time, general administration, household bills, selling your house or moving home by contacting B-Organised. Founder Belinda Sartori worked in the City for 12 years before moving to Surrey and wanting to spend more time with her children (now 9 and 6). “I like to keep busy,” she said, “so I started to help family and friends become more organized in a number of ways, such as downsizing, preparing houses for sale, and helping with paperwork and filing.” She found that people benefitted from her help. “My friends started recommending me to their friends and that led me to setting up B-Organised in May 2010.” B-Organised relies on a network of contacts as and

when needed. A major local estate agent has agreed to recommend B-Organised to clients who need help in preparing and de-cluttering their house before they go on the market. B-Organized, 07768 174423, www.b-organised.com Transform a room Create style and warmth with a contemporary feel – which doesn't require everything to be brand new. The skill lies in the blending and knowing how to mix new with old. Look carefully at your pieces and accessories. Maybe you could invest in a fabulous new oak dining table, but only re-cover the seats of your existing dining chairs. Invest in cost-effective new lamps and cushions for your evening rooms. Freshen your children’s bedrooms with pretty handmade notice and pocket boards for party invitations and pictures from Catherine Antoinette Design. A new headboard in a matching fabric can transform a room without huge costs. Catherine Antoinette Design, 01428 643399 or 07795 840986

World-class Tasmin Little

To find out what's going on in Grayshott the best place to start looking is on the village website, Peter Hatch writes. Created more than 10 years ago, grayshott.com has undergone a recent transformation, offering members social networking facilities, including messaging, forums and email notifications. To help you 'Buy in Grayshott' there is a comprehensive directory of local businesses and associations. They now maintain their own group pages with regular updates, events and documents, all published at the click of a button. Members can join business and association groups and opt to receive automatic email notifications. Each group is updated either immediately or

with a daily or weekly summary. A popular feature is the weekly What's On! Newsletter, which pulls together all the latest news and events, providing a quick reference guide to events. Grayshott Concerts, who have built a reputation for providing superb classical concerts in Grayshott, feature on the website. Party in Grayshott (PIG) organize the village Sunday Funday street party (on 19 June 2011) and the pantomime, which this year is Cinderella. Online plans are under way for the Royal Wedding Party in Grayshott on Friday 29 April. The website is supported by a large number of sponsors and advertisers. To join the community, log on: www.grayshott.com

Classical music promoters Grayshott Concerts thought their luck was in when Tasmin Little, one of the world’s most accomplished and expressive violinists, agreed to perform in the village on 12 March. “And then,” said Vivien Harrison, Grayshott Concerts’ artistic director, “to our amazement, we were

invited to stage a different concerto altogether, the Beethoven Triple Concerto for violin, piano and cello with three top performers! The orchestral management have agreed to cover the cost of the soloists, while Grayshott Concerts need only hire a piano. The programme, which is rarely experienced even in the largest concert venues, opens with Mozart’s ‘Overture to the Marriage of Figaro’, followed by Wagner’s ‘Siegfried Idyll’ chamber music. Tasmin will then perform ‘The Lark Ascending’ and the evening finishes with the Triple Concerto played by Tasmin (violin), Howard Shelley (piano) and Sebastian Comberti (cello). Liphook Lively Liphook plans for the future

Larger than some small towns, Liphook offers both peace, in the surrounding countryside, and lively fun, in the annual village carnival. By Simon Cooper

G

old Award Winner 2009 for South and South East in Bloom, Liphook is just down the road from the original hamlet of Bramshott. It became a renowned coaching stop on the London Portsmouth road, and Admiral Nelson reputedly spent his last night there before the Battle of Trafalgar. From 1916-1928, author and poet Flora Thompson was a notable resident. Once a centre of intense industrial and agricultural activity, ancient water meadows of the Southern Wey dating from about 1680 are zones of tranquillity, dotted with sluices, hatches and aqueducts. Many

are now overgrown but some are wellpreserved, such as around Radford Park. Famous for its annual Carnival, which originally celebrated the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, Liphook attracts visitors from overseas to watch and participate in the procession. Up to 1500 riders take part in the annual bike ride organized by LiDBA, the local businessman’s association, to raise thousands for national and local charities. As a gateway to the new South Downs National Park, Liphook is surrounded by open country and heathland with stunning views. There are two golf courses and a country club on the

outskirts, with sailing, riding and other country sports in the vicinity. Liphook is larger than some small towns, with nearly 9,000 people. The Parish of Bramshott & Liphook includes Passfield, Conford, Griggs Green and Hammer Vale. A major consultation and planning exercise is under way to ensure a coordinated approach to the vision and future of the community. Bramshott & Liphook Parish Plan, Robin Young, 01428 723255

vs

motoring

Buying new buying used Motoring writer Tim Barnes-Clay sums up: New 1. A new car comes with a comprehensive manufacturer's warranty of at least three years or 36,000 miles that will cover almost any eventuality. Some go to 10 years or 100,000 miles. 2. A brand new motor is more likely to have the latest safety, comfort and convenience features available. 3. There will be no surprises with a new car. You are the first owner, and there are no doubts about previous mechanical problems or accidents.

Life in Haslemere gets advice from local motoring experts and journalist Tim Barnes-Clay Buying New Buying a new Renault from Anchor Garage gives peace of mind motoring with three years, 60,000 mile warranty and a three-year breakdown cover. And when a new Renault is bought, customers can take advantage of their free collection and delivery service or courtesy car every time the car comes in for a service. The dedicated sales and service teams are always there to help. Barry Haines, Anchor Garage, 01428 722 955

18

Life in Haslemere

A new car gives you a longer warranty and is not due an MOT for three years from date of first registration. As all the components are brand new they will last longer reducing your running costs. Also, manufacturers aim to get their products into the lowest CO2 band as possible, which is good for the buyer and the environment. A new car will conform to the latest safety requirements and potentially have a better EuroNCAP rating than an older car. John Beckingham, Proven Kia Motors, 01428 652554

Used 1. Do your research 2. Set a budget and stick to it. 3. View a vehicle in good conditions – a dull, damp day can mask scratches and dents. 4. View at the registered keepers’ address (as on the V5/registration document) – never meet a seller in a car park or lay-by.

Buying Used On used vehicles, you don’t pay VAT. This means you save 20 per cent, which gives you more for your money so you can buy a higher specification vehicle. Using an established local dealer will give peace of mind. We offer AA warranties on our used cars so all the necessary checks have been made, and we are always on hand being locally based. David Barnes, Grayswood Cars, 01428 642303 It is really important to check tyre pressure and tread depth.

5. Remain neutral – if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. 6. Check the mileage – it should be consistent with the vehicle’s condition. Look for wear on seats and pedals. 7. Check the engine thoroughly – get a professional in, if you don’t know what to look for. 8. Examine bodywork for signs of rust or corrosion – vehicle inspection recommended. 9. Check all documentation – ask for the V5/ registration document, the MOT certificates, and service history. 10. Contact the previous keeper and/or the servicing dealers to double check the vehicle service history and mileage. 11. Test drive – Never buy a vehicle without driving it for at least 10 miles. 12. Get an HPI Check – it could spell the difference between a dream purchase and a nightmare on wheels. www.barnes-claymedia. webeden.co.uk

It is the law for the tread depth to be 1.6mm and will provide optimum friction on roads. Simon Budd, MTS Tyres, 01428 751162 Check HPI data for stolen vehicles, insurance write-offs and outstanding finance. Take a close look at the vehicle to ensure it meets your requirements and expectations and check the seller is the lawful owner. The registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner. Songs of Praise

St Edmund’s has been shortlisted for the finals of the BBC Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year

A

n independent prep school in Hindhead, St Edmund’s has overcome stiff national competition as one of only six junior schools in the UK to go forward to the finals in Sheffield on 5-6 March. Rob Lewis, Director of Music, says: “The BBC has told us this year’s Junior category is the strongest in

the programme’s history. So no pressure there, then!” In preparation for the event a BBC film crew has already spent a day at the school with the choir. Among the choristers are Louis Denison-Foster and Myles D’Angelo, who were chosen to perform the Karl Jenkins “Stella Natalis”, conducted by the

Green flag for St Hilary’s

composer himself. Over the past two years the choir have also sung in some prestigious venues, such as St Mark’s in Venice, Verona

Cathedral, and Montserrat Abbey in Barcelona. St. Edmund’s School, 01428 609875

erek Paravicini, the world-famous blind musician, will perform his unique style of jazz, blues, classical and sensational improvisations based on audience requests on Friday 4 March at Haslemere Hall. The event is in support of Barrow Hills School’s nominated charity – St Benoît School in Burkina Faso, West Africa. In recent years Barrow Hills has raised over £15,000 to enable St Benoît to build a new school building and create a garden. They have also funded the installation of toilets, a kitchen and a perimeter fence. This year funds are being raised for a number of projects including library books, additional computers, rewiring of the school, furniture and ceiling fans. After a sell-out concert at the school last year, Derek Paravicini has agreed to perform again in aid of this worthy cause. Although blind and severely learningimpaired, Derek has a unique musical mind that both moves and astonishes all those who hear him. He can play many pieces of

music after hearing them just once – in any key – and in a wide range of styles. Alongside Derek’s famous spur-of-themoment improvisations, his concert will include works by many famous composers. He is an extraordinary pianist, who can neither see nor read music. Audiences rarely catch him out! Derek has performed across the world as a soloist, and with renowned musicians such as the BBC TV personality Jools Holland. His talents have been the subject of several international TV documentaries including Channel Five’s Extraordinary People series. On the afternoon of Friday 4 March Derek will perform a free concert for senior members of the local community, by invitation only. The evening concert starts at 8pm and tickets (at £15-£22.50) are available from Haslemere Hall box office on 01428 642161 or online: www.haslemerehall.co.uk

Oxbridge success at Bedales

Kick off for Conifers

D N

ine Bedales students have had offers from Oxford and Cambridge for courses including mathematics, economics, theology, natural sciences and fine art. This is the best set of Oxbridge offers for the school since 2004 and one of the strongest in the last 18 years. Bedales students have had offers of places at other leading UK and overseas universities – such as Durham, Edinburgh, Bristol, York, Cardiff, Sussex Medical School, and Bard and Brown in the US.

In recent results for GCSEs 18 out of 22 students achieved A* grades and the remaining four received A grades. Keith Budge, Headmaster of Bedales Schools, said that both sets of results “reflect inspirational teaching and meticulous preparation. It is extremely rewarding to see our students winning such good higher education destinations, given the increasingly competitive university landscape.” Bedales Schools, 01730 300100, www.bedales.org.uk

ominic Waldouck, England and Wasps rugby star, held a special training session at Conifers, Midhurst, in January with members of the school’s teams. Dominic took the children through a series of exercises stressing the importance of a thorough warm-up of all the muscle groups before kick off. He then worked with them on their grid work, ball-handling skills, passing, and kicking. Back in school he told the children about his training and career to date. He gave away signed Wasps and England training shirts to members of the team who answered questions from the training session. Dominic, aged 23, plays centre and is an up and

Until recently he was member of EPS (England’s Elite Player Squad), but a neck injury sustained seven weeks ago has forced him to drop out of the top squad to focus on regaining full fitness. Lucy Bourne, Conifers Head of Sport, said: “The teams enjoyed a fantastic morning with Dominic and took away some great tips. We have enjoyed visits from many sports stars, it has a positive effect on the children.” Conifers School, 01730 813243

Are you sitting comfortably?

Simmons Interiors has opened two additional showrooms at their premises in Grayshott to help clients choose sofas and furniture. In addition to the fabric and lighting rooms, there are now four showrooms, dedicated to showcasing many sofas, coffee tables, and home accessories. The new showrooms enable Simmons’ clients to see and try out many different models of sofas and chairs. Philip Simmons has provided top-end interior design services for nearly 25 years. He heads the design team at Simmons Interiors, which has been described as “a first-class, one stop service for both residential and commercial interior design projects”. He added: “We are now stocking an extensive range of fabulous, stylish sofas, all hand-made in the UK using a combination of traditional skills, new technology and fine materials. All upholstery is made using solid hardwood

frames and high-tensile steel spring. The sofas can be made to any size, in whatever fabric you want and with a variety of cushion fillings.” Simmons Interiors has a renowned fabric library, built up over 20 years and recently expanded. It contains the latest fabric and wallpaper books as well as many old favourites. The lighting and furniture library has some of the best companies in each sector, such as Vaughan Lighting, Porta Romana, and Bella Figura. Simmons Interiors says it offers the highest level of oneon-one service. Free showroom consultations happen over a cup of coffee with staff who are happy to advise. Networking news Haslemere has a new business networking group which costs £75 a year, including VAT. The HBNG (Haslemere Business Networking Group) meets for breakfast every Tuesday morning from 7 to 8.45am. The non-profitmaking group encourages visitors, and they can attend meetings twice

before deciding to join. The meetings include one-minute statements, a 10-minute presentation by a member, two one-to-one meetings, and business referrals. The chairman is Charles Blumlein, of Transform Landscapes. HBNG, www.hbng.co.uk, charles@hbng.co.uk

Floral statement The new florist’s shop on Liphook’s Newton Road, off Station Road catches the eye with its bright pink and green sign and beautiful display of flowers in the window. Five Petals (one petal for each of the Snuggs sisters) is a family-run business owned by Carol Snuggs and managed by Holly. Having opened in October, this traditional florist welcomes business from its website and off the street. Inside the shop there is a variety of gifts and fresh stem flowers. Holly creates beautiful arrangements for many occasions. “Our flowers come from Holland,” she says. “And, from the time I order them, it takes only 24 hours to get delivered to me.” Prices are marked on a board inside the shop. So you know that you are paying a fair price for high-quality flowers. “I feel like I’m doing a

Holly Snuggs

hobby and getting paid for it,” Holly adds. “I love meeting new people and adapting to each of my customers specifications. “A personally designed bunch of flowers is a lovely traditional gift for Valentine’s Day, Mothers’ Day or Easter. Flowers are still important to people, but people’s perception of flowers is changing. Carnations used to be the flower to send for love, now it is the red rose.” Five Petals, 01428 727400 www.five-petals.co.uk

Warm up this winter To keep warm in these increasingly cold winters, it has become increasingly important to have a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective source of heat. Russell Shellard, MD of Bramdean Stoves, recommends wood and smokeless fuels as “the obvious solution”. He explains that wood and solid smokeless fuels provide between 70% and 80% efficiency, when used in a wood or multi-fuel appliance. Other benefits, he says, are that the fuel is cost-effective; supply is more reliable than gas and electricity; open fires are only 20 per cent efficient compared with stoves; and the appliances are both “aesthetically pleasing” and rated officially carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust. A wide range of appliances in many different shapes, sizes and designs can been seen in the Haslemere showroom of Bramdean Stoves. Here, Russell Shellard promises, “people will

find the right stove for their needs, thanks to helpful and knowledgeable staff”. He adds: “A high proportion of installations require some form of building work, or construction to the hearth or recess. Bramdean Stoves is a sister company to Bramdean Construction, and so all works can be carried out in-house, thereby reducing costs, organization hassles and the time it takes for the job to be completed. “Our highly skilled team of fully qualified HETAS engineers ensure that installations are completed to the highest standard. A wood-burning or multi-fuel appliance can be installed almost anywhere. It’s not essential to have an existing chimney, as we can fit freestanding flue systems, both internally and externally.” Bramdean Stoves, 01428 648882 www.bramdeanstoves.com
