Hospital plan approved New plans by City and Country Group to develop the former King Edward VII hospital site, near Fernhurst, have received conditional approval from the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) in November. The conditions of the SDNPA Planning Committee are that the developer agrees to tougher controls to protect the wildlife and natural beauty of the area. These will cover issues including light pollution, tree cover and protection of ground nesting birds. He recognizes the concerns of local people and promises that SDNPA will work with them. The proposal includes the development of some 240 new homes which will fund the conversion and restoration of the listed buildings. It will pay for the demolition of unsightly postwar additions as well as the restoration of gardens designed by Gertrude Jekyll. Planning consents were given in 2004, 2008 and 2010 by Chichester District Council, the planning authority before the SDNPA assumed overall responsibility for

King Edward VII hospital building

local planning in April this year. In July 2011 the SDNPA Planning Committee rejected the latest of several controversial applications by developers. This application was opposed by English Heritage, but they are not objecting to this revised proposal, submitted in September by City and Country. The committee felt “on balance that the new application would ensure the protection and restoration of the historic buildings and gardens.” For more information, www.southdowns. gov.uk/about-us/news/planningcommittee-king-edward-vii-application

Charter Fair 2012 Haslemere Charter Fair, which attracted 10,000 people this year, is set for Bank Holiday Monday 7 May in 2012, from 1-5pm. Booking forms will go out in early January next year. The Fair is open to anyone who runs a charity, club or society in the town, and wants to attract new members. Last May there were 120 stalls and non-stop live entertainment in the High Street and in West Street. The first reported Charter Fair in the

town was in 1394 – after a charter dating from 1221, and confirmed by Richard II and the Bishop of Salisbury in 1393 allowing a Town Crier Christian weekly market and Ashdown annual fair. For more details, contact Ceri Jane O’Hara, 07920 115690 or email haslemerecharterfair@gmail.com

UberPolo’s owner Leigh-Anne Moore said: “We‘re so pleased to officially open our first retail shop in Haslemere and have the support of the local community. News in Brief

In praise of Undershaw

Actor Robert Lindsay bemoans the fact that few places important to the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, remain untouched. Conan Doyle’s former homes have been lost or converted to other uses. Robert Lindsay adds: “Often a plaque is the only indication that he [Conan Doyle] had a connection to a site at all. His former Hindhead home, Undershaw, is now the only unoccupied site that could be restored. Whatever your opinion of his work, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of the best and most well-loved writers these islands have ever produced. His house should be saved in order that future generations will have the opportunity to see where this great writer lived during one of the most productive periods of his life.” Undershaw Preservation Society, www.saveundershaw.com

Olympic torch The Olympic Torch Relay is coming to the area on Monday 16 July 2012. The torch will leave from Portsmouth up the A3, pass through Buriton and Petersfield, to Rogate, Stedham, Midhurst, Petworth, and then south through Duncton to Chichester, to Bognor, Worthing and finishing that day in Brighton. On 20 July it goes to Godalming and Guildford. More than 1,000 villages, towns and cities have been named as points through which the Torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame. Market record The Weald and Downland Museum welcomed a record number of people – more than 12,000 – to its Christmas Market in November. The weather was glorious, and visitors browsed and bought from 120 different stalls in the historic buildings and around the site. Stalls ranged from Christmas decorations to jewellery, and from cupcakes to handmade wooden furniture. Future events include the annual Tree Dressing Celebration on Sunday 4 December; and, from 26 December to 1 January, experience ‘A Sussex Christmas’ and discover how our ancestors enjoyed the Festive Season. It’sa wrap We’ve got your Christmas party preparation all wrapped up in our ultimate guide to partying in style. By Alana Hebenton Beauty

Black top, £39.99, black trousers, £55.99, Kudu

While we all love Christmas, we can’t deny that getting ready for it can be stressful at times. So your first step in Christmas party preparation should be to get yourself completely relaxed. Grayshott Spa offers a range of therapeutic treatments, such as their nurturing Rose Cocoon Body Wrap (from £67). This indulgent treatment uses essential oils of damask rose that uplift the mind and senses. Rich oils and creams are smoothed onto freshly exfoliated skin leaving it glowing, silky and revitalised. A relaxing scalp massage completes this deeply moisturising treatment. To ensure you are looking your best from top to toe, a good manicure and pedicure are also essential. The Amarna Spa has a range of luxury manicures and pedicures (from £36) with detoxifying scrubs, soothing massages with cuticle work and polish. But, if you are short on time, they also have mini manicures and pedicures (from £25.50), where they'll file, shape, tidy your cuticles and massage in just 25 minutes! And even when the weather outside is frightful, you won’t want to go to your Christmas party without a warm sunshine glow. Therefore a St Tropez tan (£26.50) at Eden Hair & Beauty is a must.

Make up must have… Get set and glow this Christmas

Catwalk trends for this party season are big beautiful brows, cashmere skin and statement red lips, according to the Luxury Gap. Regular luxurious ESPA facials together with a good skin care regime at home will ensure you are dewy skinned, and their fabulous Mii Make up range together with Jessica Nail polishes will complement this to leave you looking stunning and ready to party. around from last year. To achieve this look, the experts at Black Swan suggest teaming your favourite woollen jumper with an elegant floor-length skirt. However, you can’t go wrong with a little black dress (or little red dress which is more appropriate for the season of goodwill!) If you fancy giving this classic look an edgy twist, Black Swan recommend “wearing your dress with a masculine jacket and balancing the look with feminine, sparkly heels.”

If heels aren’t for you or your feet just can’t last the night, at Hengelo you’ll find Cocorose London’s collection of beautiful and comfortable ballet pumps (£45). Each pair of Cocoroses simply folds in half and are beautifully presented in their own luxury travel purse, so they can be neatly carried in handbags and slipped on when required. The removed high heels can then be easily stowed in the accompanying shoulder bag, located in the purse’s back pocket.

Fun fitness

As we make our New Year resolutions to get fit and healthy, we’ve been putting our bodies to the test, trying out the top exercise options in and around Haslemere. By Alana Hebenton, Florence Howes and Jackie Barnett Personal Trainers

I’ve always been quite into my fitness, so when I found out I was getting a session with a personal trainer, I couldn’t wait. A personal trainer not only offers a variety of exercises, to keep your workouts from becoming boring and ensures you achieve the optimum results, but also gives you flexibility to where you workout.

Robert Elford

My first session was with Haslemere based Robert Elford. With over a decade of experience, Robert offers a variety of different exercise programmes and dietary advice. Firstly, Robert asked me exactly what I wanted to achieve so he could tailor an exercise routine for me. Robert then showed me a series of intensity interval training exercises, designed to target the different areas of my body. The exercises definitely put my fitness to the test, but the workout remained fun. I particularly liked having the reassurance from a personal trainer that I was doing the exercises correctly.

FrankieFit

My second session was with Francesca Goodwin (AKA FrankieFit.) The session began with a detailed consultation where I was asked to complete a physical activity readiness questionnaire (PAR-Q). Frankie then took my blood pressure, tested my lung capacity and measured the percentage of fat on my body, enabling her to tailor an exercise programme to my specific needs. After my consultation Frankie went through a series of exercises designed to improve my fitness and the structure of my current training routine. During our session Frankie also gave me five top tips for improving my fitness: 1. Keep a food and mood diary. She asks clients to keep a record of everything they eat and drink for a week and note how they feel afterwards. This makes you more careful of what you consume 14

Life in Haslemere

and lets you identify patterns and make improvements to your diet. 2. Keep hydrated. Drink 1 -1 ½ litres of water daily. We can confuse thirst with hunger. If you feel hungry between meals try drinking a glass of water. 3. Sleep more. Sleep is essential for us to keep control of our appetite. If we don’t get enough sleep a hormone imbalance occurs. This sends messages to the brain to eat more when no more food is needed. Go to bed half an hour earlier (8 hours a night is ideal). 4. Fitness must become part of your life. Ideally we would all participate in one hour of structured exercise every day. In our busy lives this may not always be achievable. However, it is possible to take time every day to be active. 5. For a balanced healthy body we should do a combination of aerobic and muscular exercise.

Aqua Aerobics

Alongside my personal trainer sessions I also got to experience the benefits of Aqua Aerobics at the Holy Cross Park Physiotherapy Centre. Here they offer a class suited to anybody wanting to maintain or improve their general fitness. As it was my first aqua aerobics class, I enjoyed the relaxed environment and how the routine had been designed to suit all levels of fitness. By Alana Hebenton

Herons and The Edge

Jackie and Florence decided to try a different approach to fitness by becoming members of The Herons and The Edge Leisure Centre in Haslemere. Unlike our fit friend Alana we are less into fitness and struggle to find the time, they write. We both aimed to tone our tired bodies ... and increase our energy levels. We began with a personal consultation at the Herons with Rob Scull who went through a detailed questionnaire on our current levels of fitness, what we wanted to achieve, took our vital

statistics and advised us on our rather sluggish diets! Before we undertook any exercises in the gym Rob Scull and Frank Bennett met us three times to advise on how to use the equipment tailoring it to our individual needs. These trainers are on hand to advise at any time whilst using the equipment (Jackie also checked that they are fully trained in CPR!). We were advised by Frank Bennett that three 40 minute gym sessions a week – with a 20/20 split of cardio and weights – are what we should aim for, rather than infrequent longer sessions. We liked that we could get in, work out and get home in time for Corrie! We enjoyed the variety that was available at the Herons and The Edge, with everything from swimming, gym, squash, classes and personal training sessions. This type of membership is ideal for all – families as well as individuals of all levels of fitness, and for all budgets.

Taste of Christmas

While November and December do not have the hectic fruit and veg growth of the summer months, there are still some real gems to be found, if you know what to look for say Riverford. Celeriac is a smoky, celery-flavoured root that is ready for harvest at the end of November, and works well mixed into a potato gratin, or in an autumnal soup (perhaps with a little truffle oil, if you are feeling extravagant). Used in small amounts, the intense, earthy bitterness of the radicchio, escarole and endive family can really lift a dish; radicchio risotto or pasta is particularly tasty. Lastly, sprouts aren’t just for Christmas, and they have bags of flavour on offer, as long as they are not overcooked! Try crisping them up in a wok with garlic, chilli and ginger, or with bacon and chestnuts in a creamy gratin. You can find many more creative, inspiring recipes on the Riverford website.

This festive season Grayshott Wines recommends the 2010 Macon Lugny. Characterized by a pale yellow colour, this unique wine offers aromas of exotic fruit with a spicy finish and a touch of ginger – the perfect taste of Christmas! And as a special Christmas treat they will be offering Macon Lugny for just £8.99 each or 12 bottles for the price of 11. Grayshott Wines, 01428 607660

Baked sprouts with a stuffing crust By Jane Baxter, from Everyday and Sunday – Recipes from Riverford Farm. Sprout haters may well be converted by this seasonal dish that truly makes the most of sprouts. It wouldn’t look out of place alongside chicken or sausages, or even with some roast turkey. Serves 4–6 750g sprouts 3 tablespoons duck fat or butter 1 teaspoon caster sugar sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 100g smoked streaky bacon, chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tablespoon chopped sage leaves 1 teaspoon thyme leaves 150g soft breadcrumbs finely grated zest of 1 orange 1 tablespoon chopped parsley 100g peeled, vacuum-packed chestnuts, roughly chopped 200ml chicken stock Preheat the oven to 160°C/Gas Mark 3. Peel and trim the sprouts and cut into quarters lengthways. Toss in an ovenproof dish with 1 tablespoon of the duck fat and the sugar and season well. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes, until just tender. While the sprouts are cooking, brown the bacon in a frying pan in the remaining duck fat, then add the garlic, sage and thyme. Cook for 1 more minute, remove from the heat and stir through the breadcrumbs, orange zest and parsley. Season. Stir the chestnuts into the sprouts. Pour over the chicken stock. Top with the stuffing mixture and return to the oven for 10 minutes, or until golden. Riverford Vegboxes start at £9.85 with free delivery. www.riverford.co.uk, or call 01803 762 059. 16

Wine list The key ingredient to the festive season is a good value bottle of Champagne, say Imbibros. Vilmart Grande Reserve NV is the insiders’ choice. Vilmart make outrageously good Champagne, once described as ‘mini-Krug’! With Krug at £130 why not save yourself over £100 a bottle and buy 6+ Vilmart for only £29.95 per bottle. Claret is a must, so for parties why not try the scrumptious Chateau du Pin Bordeaux AC 2009 dominated by soft plummy Merlot fruit. Buy 12 or more for only £7.95 per bottle saving you £24! An alternative for the Christmas table, the Marques de Murrieta Rioja Reserva 2005 is a terrific Rioja with soft ripe fruit and classic vanilla notes – what’s more you save £18 when you buy 6 bottles. £17.95 down to £14.95 for 6+ btls, a cracker of a saving. For the whites, a crisp, zippy Sauvignon Blanc such as the lovely Momo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010 at £9.95 (down from £11.95) works superbly well with rich, smoked salmon. Finally there’s no better way to finish the evening than being sat in front of the cosy log fire along with a heart warming glass of Amaretto Saliza at £24.95 – this is the real deal made from the finest quality almonds with a delightful lightness and intense yet elegant marzipan and cacao flavour that blows the generic attempts out of the water! All of the above are available at Imbibros Wine & Spirit Merchants www.imbibros.co.uk

Good Food Guide Stuart and Annemaria BoomerDavies of The Swan Inn, Chiddingfold, have been included in the 2012 editions of The Good Food Guide and Michelin Guide. “Over the last 16 months the team at The Swan have worked incredibly hard and to be recognized in these two most prestigious publications is truly rewarding,” they say. 1 tbsp tomato purée 5 tbsp brandy 1 tbsp black treacle Salt and black pepper 175g (6 oz) mushrooms, thickly sliced Garnish: Orange wedges Chopped parsley

Method Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in an AGA cast iron casserole and fry the meat in batches until browned, place to one side. Add the remaining oil to the casserole and sauté the onion and garlic for 2-3 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually blend in the stock, orange zest and juice, tomato purée, brandy and treacle, stir well. Return the meat and juices to the casserole and season. Bring the contents to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes, cover with the lid. 2, 3 and 4 oven AGA: Transfer to the simmering oven for 2 hours or until the meat is tender. Then stir in the mushrooms and return to the Simmering Oven for a further 30 minutes. Conventional cooking: Cook on the hotplate then transfer to the oven at 140ºC (275ºF), fan oven 120ºC, Gas Mark 1 for 2 hours or until the meat is tender. Then stir in the mushrooms and simmer for a further 30 minutes.

Lower Roundhurst Farm suggest that you serve with fluffy mashed potatoes or soft broad noodles. Serves 4 500g of Lower Roundhurst Farm Organic Braising Steak 1 small onion 1 small leek 2 carrots 1 small parsnip 1 clove of garlic 2 tbs olive oil,

1 tbs seasoned cornflour, 330ml of strong beer, 250ml of beef stock, 2 sage leaves, A sprig of thyme, ¼ tsp ground cinnamon, Garnish with 1 tsp of pesto or chopped parsley.

Heat half of the oil in a large flame proof casserole dish and gently fry chopped vegetables until softened. Heat remaining oil in a frying pan. Turn up heat until oil is very hot. Fry the steak in small batches leaving until brown and sticking to the pan. Brown on all sides, the burning helps to produce the rich colour and delicious flavours of the finished dish. Sprinkle the seasoned cornflour and cinnamon over the beef, stir and cook until oil is absorbed.

Check seasoning and garnish with orange and sprinkle with chopped parsley.

Transfer the steak into the casserole. Splash beer into the frying pan to loosen caramelised meat. Add this to casserole. Add remaining beer and enough stock to cover. Add the sage leaves and thyme. Bring to the boil and cook for a few minutes on the hob. Transfer to a low oven Gas mark ½ /120°C for 2½ hours.

Real ale around Haslemere As one of the organizers of The Haslemere Beer Festival it is probably not difficult to deduce that Simon Labrow is very keen on real ale! Here he shares a selection of pubs on the real ale trail around Haslemere. Inn On The Hill, Lower Street, is famous for its “Taylor Made Steaks” and primarily a dining and rooms venue. It retains its pub status by always having at least one cask ale. Handy position opposite the station. The Swan Inn, Haslemere – can have 6 real ales on a good day with constantly changing guest ales. The standard Wetherspoons formula with www.lifemags.co.uk

keen pricing. The White Horse, High Street. Normally two to three real ales available, Doom Bar and London Pride generally the resident ales plus a guest. Allegedly Haslemere’s busiest pub. The Apple Tree, Lion Green. Normally at least one real ale available. The Royal Oak, Critchmere. Generally a good selection of real ales, Doom Bar again a resident along with a couple of others. Beer generally well kept. The Mill Tavern, Shottermill. An up and coming star on the

real ale front, vastly improved in recent years. Normally around four real ales available and constantly changing guest ale. Some out of town options include: Duke of Cumberland, Henley. Great quality ales served straight from the cask. Very supportive of local brewery Langham with Hip Hop normally available along with several others. The Red Lion, Fernhurst. Fullers pub with well-kept standard Fullers ales including their seasonal specials.

PARKING The Chamber is fighting the introduction of

on-street parking charges by Surrey County Council and the increase in parking charges in the car parks by Waverley Borough Council. The Chamber believes that this penalizes shoppers for buying locally and encourages more out of town or online shopping. In the past, many businesses in the town participated in a parking refund scheme, similar to the one run by Waitrose. Some retailers still offer it if asked, but the Chamber hopes to revamp the scheme to support local shoppers.

care

Careful

planning

How much money do you need to pay for care fees? Lesley Hussell discovers there is no need to panic

C

ould you come up with £180,000 to fund the care of an elderly parent or spouse? No? Few of us could put our hands on that kind of sum easily. Selling property might be our only solution, and that’s an unsatisfactory move for all concerned. According to a recent survey (by Partnership.co.uk], £180,000 is the amount that long-term care in a residential or nursing home could cost for an elderly person in the South East if they live more than four years. But there is no need to panic. There are ways around this invidious situation. Without proper planning, families can find they simply run out of money. If a vulnerable loved one has to be moved out of a familiar care home into cheaper accommodation, it can mean unexpected and unsettling upheaval. So what are people who want the best care for themselves or their parents to do? “The sensible answer is to start planning, saving and looking for inventive ways to raise that money as soon as possible,” says Gordon Tate, 26

Life in Haslemere

a local independent financial adviser specializing in funding long-term care. “Sometimes it’s a case of unlocking local authority funds to which you may be entitled – but which councils may tend not to shout about. Sometimes it’s a case of realising family assets, such as through an equity release mortgage that gives access to funds without selling the family home.” It is easy to become worried because of the complexities of funding long-term care. During the summer the Dilnot Report recommended capping lifetime contributions to social care costs to £35,000. The Government is considering arguments for and against this proposal, and at a time of spending cuts it is not clear whether it will come into force. Deciding that a relative can no longer live independently and would be better cared for in a home, finding the right place and working out how to pay for it – it is bound to be an emotional time. “I’ve been advising families for 30 years. I arranged care for my own elderly parents and I work as a volunteer with carers’ support charities and Friends of

Top tips Gordon Tate has 5 tips for funding long-term care: • Do not panic, but arrange to talk through all your options with an independent expert. • Do this as soon as you can, as it is easier to find creative ways to raise funds at the time your relative needs care or just before, rather than if you wait until the money has run out. • Investigate what State and local council fee support may be available. • Do not assume you will have to give up your house to pay care fees, as alternatives can often be found. • Look for an independent financial adviser who is a member of SOLLA, the Society of Later Life Advisers.

I was away for nine weeks and, despite the summer being out of season for lacrosse, it was still important for me to keep up my skills over the holiday.” To keep up with her training, Laura practised with the local workers, teaching them how to play. "The locals of the jungle were immensely curious about the strange equipment I had bought out there with me! The big sports in Peru are football for men and volleyball for women. “However, they were very keen to have a try with the sticks and learnt very quickly how to throw and catch, though we did keep losing the ball among the trees and had to watch out for snakes and jaguars.” Laura, originally from Fernhurst, is taking part in an inter-squad England Tournament, called Best & Brightest, at the University of Surrey during the next few months. This is part of the selection process for tours and games. “My ultimate dream is to be part of the 18 players selected to represent England in the European Championships in June 2012,” she says, “and the World Cup Championships in July 2013. grayshott news

The trumpet shall sound Hilary Davan Wetton and Alison Balsom

St Luke’s Church was packed to the rafters to hear an outstanding concert given by the London Mozart Players and Alison Balsom, trumpet in November. Mozart’s Prague Symphony was given a

dramatic, mesmeric performance. The Don Giovanni-like progressions in the slow introduction were majestic and suspenseful with biting discords. Conductor Hilary Davan Wetton paid great attention to detail and the extreme dynamic contrasts made for a riveting performance. Alison Balsom gave an invigorating, stunning account of Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto. The lilting Andante contained flawless legato phrasing and the athletic Rondo finale was alert and full of fireworks. Vivaldi’s short Concerto for Trumpet (RV 230) is an excellent vehicle in which to display Alison Balsom’s extraordinary musicianship and technical fluency on the piccolo trumpet. Haydn’s Surprise Symphony ended the concert and, like the Prague Symphony, was given an exceptional performance. Grayshott Concerts, 01428 606666 Ann Pinhey

Farewell to Dick Smith BIG players (l to r): Adrian Banwell, Dick Smith, Kevin Kaighin

The Buy in Grayshott (BIG) campaign said a fond farewell at their October meeting to Dick Smith, who stood down as chairman. He said he was happy to hand over the reins to Adrian Banwell who was “champing at the bit to put something back into the village that he had enjoyed for over 17 years”. Phil Bates outlined the achievements that BIG had attained under the chairmanship of Dick, who was given a standing ovation. The presentation of a tankard and card followed, and the evening was rounded off by Kim & Mark, the hosts at the Fox & Pelican, laying on a marvellous spread for the members. At his last meeting in the chair, Dick reported that Grayshott had been judged “Best Village in Hampshire” for Business in the Community and were runners-up for best village in Hampshire, narrowly pipped by one point. New boutique

Churt chic

Helen (left) and Kate of Hengelo

Charlie Smith

Haslemere siblings Kate Payne, Helen Stride and silent partner Angus McCaffery have opened a brand new fashion boutique, Hengelo, on the stylish West Street. Replacing Meeka, the family hope to bring a fresh new approach. Kate said, “Hengelo will be offering fantastic service, affordable fashion with an eclectic mix of clothes and accessories. In the New Year we will be re-launching the shop and it will be called Hengelo, which is a town in Holland where we used to live so it is meaningful to us and our family.” As well as the store’s current products, Hengelo are introducing a range of new brands such as Cocorose Shoes and Lilifi Handbags. For more information you can find Hengelo on Facebook at Hengelo Shop, 01428 644911

Meet the Business

Churt-based interior designer Charlie Smith has just opened A Boutique in The Old Bakery. “I was inspired to open A Boutique because Churt and the surrounding villages always seemed to attract sophisticated folk,” Charlie explains. Charlie hopes the boutique will offer the same elegant style as her previous interiors’ store in New York. “We have had fabulous feedback from just about everyone that has visited the store. One lady proclaimed the boutique to be the best thing that ever happened to Churt!” On the 15 and 20 December A Boutique will hold special shopping evenings from 7-9.30pm for busy men who don’t have time to choose and wrap presents for their wives, girlfriends and loved ones. Cheers (l to r): Richard Royds, Julianne Evans, Stephane Jacob

The businesses of Haslemere enjoyed an evening of fine wine and delicious cheeses as The Haslemere Cellar hosted Meet the Business in November. Taking place in the Haslemere Museum, the evening started with businesses tasting a variety of the Cellar’s best wines, including Prosecco Special Cuvee Brut, Zonin, Pinot Blanc Reserve, Joseph Cattin, Alsace and Chateau Caronne-Ste-Gemme Haut-Medoc Cru Bourgeois. Haslemere Cellar owner Richard Royds then talked about the range of wines available at the Cellar and their collaboration with the Cheese Box. The monthly event provided a great opportunity for the Haslemere Chamber of Commerce members to meet some of the newer members and catch up with the regulars in a very convivial atmosphere. “Many of our clients have expressed an interest in giving something back to the destinations they love,” said Gemma Antrobus, Managing Director of Haslemere Travel. “We were pleased to offer ITC Classics the opportunity to inform our clients about this novel approach to travel and philanthropy.” To find out more about booking a trip with ITC Giving, call Haslemere Travel on 01428 658 777 gemma.antrobus@haslemere.co.uk

500 mile walk Haslemere-based Jonathan Graham-Brown (pictured) has completed the ArnaudBordeaux 500 mile walk. Taking 22 days, the walk has raised £11,000 for the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. Jonathan took on the challenge to raise money for the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and mark the centenary of her first appearance on the English Stage. Graham walked from Yvonne Arnaud’s grave at St Martha’s Chapel, Guildford, to her birthplace 500 miles away in Bordeaux.

Some 50 people gathered at the Prince of Wales in Hammer Bottom, to celebrate the 2011 TittyWittering Challenge which helped to raise £15,000 for the prostate and Everyman cancer charities. A cheque for £10,000 was handed over to Colin Stokes, Chairman of the Prostate Project at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. This will help towards the building of a urology centre at the hospital. A further £5,000 was presented to Geraldine Kay, Fundraising Officer for the Institute of Cancer Research. This money will go towards the Everyman charity and help in the genetic research into prostate and testicular cancer. The Challenge saw 26 people set off from the Millennium Hall in Liphook, at 4am, to cover 38 miles. Their route took them via Titty Hill to Midhurst and then Singleton, where another 45 people (including Life Magazines’ Nick Keith and his dog Alfie) joined in, the fun at Chichester Marina. Then 57 more joined in and a total of 128 completed their individual challenges, finishing at West Wittering. L

Friday 6 January 2012 at Haslemere Hall. Fresh from the success of Beauty and the Beast in October (I saw it, I loved it!), the Haslemere Players are set to entertain us once again with the ever popular musical, Oliver! at Haslemere Hall from 20-24 March. And plans have already begun for the jubilee with the Haslemere Players presentation of the “Jubilee Showstoppers” on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 June - with songs from the Diamond Decades performed by some of the very best voices in the town at

Haslemere Hall. The Fringe Festival returns to Lion Green for a fabulous weekend of music, comedy and performance poetry on the 2-3 June. Haslemere’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations will also take place on Lion Green on Bank Holiday Monday 4 June, where music reflecting the six decades of the Queen’s reign will be provided by The Upbeat Beatles, the Haslemere Players and a host of other terrific bands. The organizers claim they will be buying bunting by the mile and have planned a Jubilee Cream Tea for 3,000. Haslemere Hall, 01428 642161 Alana Hebenton Issue 31 December 2011 / January 2012

Things you should know about a dog's dinner.

The dog food market is awash with foods claiming to be "natural" or "additive free" but a closer look at the list of ingredients often shows this not to be the case, says Lynda Davies of D&G Pets. Unless you are a dog nutritionist the list can be very confusing as more and more manufacturers are using generic and misleading terms to describe their ingredients - all in the name of profits.

Paws

for thought

Pets are at the top of many children’s Christmas list, but there are issues to consider

W

hile it may be tempting to treat your children with a furry friend this festive season, there are many things to think about before buying an animal. The Haslemere Pet Company believes that, unless serious preparation has been done, getting a puppy or kitten at Christmas is the worst time to welcome a pet to the household. “The first few weeks after taking a kitten or puppy into a household are the most crucial in determining how the next 15 years of the pet’s relationship with the family will be. Why throw it into the chaos or irregular activities which go on around Christmas?” Wendy at Animals at Home Haslemere says, “Young pets always look cute and cuddly but they don't stay like that for long and need a lot of care/attention. People need to do their research and find out all about the pets needs first,

36

Life in Haslemere

do they have the time and also if they can afford the added expense.” Cats Protection also advise that Christmas can be a stressful time for pets, as decorations, tinsel, mistletoe and ivy can all be toxic and potentially deadly to cats. The same consideration should be taken when buying a smaller indoor pet at Christmas. The experts at The Haslemere Pet Company recommend asking, “How long has the child been keen on such a pet?” If it’s only been for a month or two, there is every likelihood that the child will lose interest or begin to neglect the animal fairly soon. Parents should ALWAYS be prepared to take over the care of the animal should this happen, and if they aren’t, then do not get one. Outdoor pets like rabbits guinea pigs will require considerably more time and money than indoor pets – needing inoculations, neutering, a large hutch

There is hope though as a whole new sector of the pet food industry is growing and is dedicated to proving natural, biologically appropriate real food (BARF). These foods are more closely orientated to the natural diet of our best friends and will improve their digestion, coat, energy levels and general health. Dogs which have suffered from digestive problems and allergies have shown marked improvements when placed on the appropriate natural diet.

There is a growing body of vets who recommend such diets to alleviate a number of conditions and health problems and owners already feeding such a diet would never feed anything less. For more information on healthy dog food visit www.lifemags.co.uk

and run with associated higher running costs. And, unless a garage or shed is available for your outdoor pet, Christmas is again not a good time of year to acquire outdoor pets. They should be bought at a warmer time like an Easter present. But, if you really want to get a pet at Christmas there are a few that are unaffected by joining the household over this period. Setting up a fish tank or a vivarium – for keeping animals in a place as close as possible to their natural habitat – for pet snakes, lizards or invertebrates poses no particular issues at this time of year. hite appliances use almost half of total domestic electricity consumption, according to the Energy Saving Trust. If we make more energyefficient choices when buying essential appliances we could save up to £200 a year. As well as being cheaper to run because they use less power, efficient appliances can help our environment, releasing fewer greenhouse gas emissions at the power stations. C.J. Hampshire, the domestic appliance specialists and electrical retailers based in Midhurst and Liphook, know that replacing appliances can confuse some householders. Mark Somerville, who runs both branches, says: “Of course everyone wants to save money. But increasingly, we also find that people want to do more to help the environment. And little things, like replacing an appliance that is more than 10 years old and inefficient with one that uses less energy is one way to be a bit greener and save money at the same time,“ he said. Most white goods and common kitchen appliances have an energy efficiency www.lifemags.co.uk

rating. For laundry appliances and dishwashers, the most efficient are A-rated. For cold appliances, look for A++ or A+. If your current appliance is rated B to G it can use up to twice the electricity as an A++ product. These costs stack up over the lifetime of a machine. The Bosch WAQ24460GB has an A+++ energy rating. Extra energy efficiencies and faster results can be obtained with other options. With 16 different wash programmes, the Bosch WAQ24460GB gives great results for all types of textiles and for different load sizes. C.J. Hampshire offer a personal and professional approach to take the hassle out of buying a new appliance. All staff have an extensive knowledge of the wide range of top brand products, and their advice can ensure you buy the right product for your needs. Free local installation and delivery of freestanding

appliances and televisions are available from C.J. Hampshire. They will give a free quote to replace built-in appliances and a co-ordinated ‘one-stop shop’ for products that require specialist gas, aerial or electrical support. Their qualified engineers can service and repair most makes and models. C.J. Hampshire also have a large warehouse, and many products are available for immediate delivery. For any not in stock there is a quick and efficient ordering system. Larger paid-for items can be stored until the householder is ready to take delivery. This can be helpful when refitting a kitchen or when manufacturers only build to order. C.J.
