Taking the A3 back to nature Led by Dame Fiona Reynolds, DirectorGeneral of the National Trust, a group of 24 local school children helped return a section of the old A3 London to Portsmouth Road back to nature. In bright sunshine, the students enjoyed sowing seeds over land where the busy London to Portsmouth A3 Road once ran; marking the first time in over 160 years that the two pieces of land either side of the road are reunited.
Dame Fiona Reynolds, Director-General for the National Trust, said, “This is just the start. We plan to restore more of the habitat to native heathland, open up long lost views, and create new way-marked paths.” www.nationaltrust.org.uk

Haslemere properties participating will include Grade I and II listed buildings and churches. Everyone will get the opportunity to explore properties in and around Haslemere that are never usually open to the public or usually charge for admission. Heritage Open Days also includes a town walk, talks on architecture and culture, special exhibitions and concerts.
Haslemere’s Inaugural Town Criers Competition will take place in the Haslemere Museum during the Charter Fair on the 7 May Bank Holiday Monday. The winner of the annual event will be awarded the bronze statue, depicting a 17th Lancer prior to the Charge of the Light Brigade. So far 15 town criers have registered for the competition from around the country to come to Haslemere and be judged on their town crying skills and dress. They will also assist in the opening of the fair at 1pm. “This competition will add a dash of colour to the fair,” said Town Crier Christian Ashdown. “Not to mention a fair bit of noise!” www.towncriercompetition.co.uk

Put a spring in your step Jan applying my semi-permanent lipliner
Like most of us, I feel (and look) better with a little makeup on. However, this doesn’t mean I always have the time or talent to put it on well. So when I heard about semi-permanent makeup, also known as micropigmentation, I had to give it a go. With this technique, organic colour pigments are applied to the skin’s dermis with a fine needle to create a flawless natural makeup look, lasting anywhere between 18 months and four years. At The Hartley Clinic they specialise in eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips. Often waking up with smudged panda eyes and clown lips after forgetting to take my makeup off correctly, I decided to go for the eyeliner and lip treatment. Before I could have the makeup applied, trained semi-permanent makeup expert, Jan Jordan gave me a patch test to ensure I wasn’t allergic to any of the colour pigment. After no adverse reactions, I returned to the clinic the next day. Jan then discussed colour options and my desired results, before applying a topical anaesthetic to my skin. To give me a full, but natural look, my lips were then outlined and colour was faded into the centre. Once Jan had done my lips, she applied the eyeliner to my upper and bottom eyelids. The treatment was complete in approximately forty minutes. I wouldn’t describe the process as uncomfortable, however, no treatment involving needles and eyelids could ever be entirely pain-free. So those with sensitive eyes should bare this in mind. 12

Looking in the mirror I was immediately impressed by the results, there was no scabbing or soreness and in less than a week both my lips and eyes had healed! The complete look was fantastic, giving me my desired natural fresh look – just in time for spring. The Harley Clinic, 01428 288860
The real heal For thousands of years Reiki, Crystal Healing and Flower Essences have been used to heal both physical and mental conditions, “the perfect way to put a spring in your step,” Carol Wass at Grayshott Therapies explains. “My unique combination using all three therapies is beneficial for any mild or chronic condition as well as general relaxation and it is non-invasive.” My session began with a Chakra Assessment to see how my seven major energy centres were functioning. Carol then suggested the possible causes of any imbalances and how they may have affected me physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. “Chakras are energy centres which control the flow of life-force energy. For the body to be functioning at its full potential this energy needs to be constantly flowing around the body.” The second part of my assessment involved Flower Essences. Here Carol found out the remedies that would work for me by identifying the emotions that needed to be rebalanced. I was then tucked in under a blanket on the massage table, whilst Carol placed crystals on me and used different hand positions to heal my energy flow, releasing any stuck and stagnant energy and stress. After the treatment I left with a feeling of lightness ready for the new season! Grayshott Therapies, 01428 607201 Issue 33 April / May 2012

Food for thought

How to successfully detox this spring • Eat live food- feeding life inside you with fresh products: raw vegetables, ripe fruits… Vegetables are rich in fibres and are highly purifying. Add sprouted seeds in your salad every day such as alfalfa, red clover - you will top up lots of vital nutrients. • Limit saturated fat and fast release carbohydrate - white sugar; flour, pasta, rice and cereals; these foods hinder the good circulation in the body and overload it. As well as meat and dairy products, which produce toxins making the work of the liver and kidneys heavier, and destabilising the intestinal flora. • Support the liver and intestine - these filters are always overloaded by the end of the winter, avoid food which is heavy to digest and assimilate – help them by eating green vegetables, pink radish, asparagus, artichoke etc; sprinkle with olive and walnut oils. Gluten free cereals – quinoa, millet, buckwheat, brown rice - Food rich in
Time Out Massage
Hands free relaxing The idea of NO HANDS® initially sounds a bit strange. However, this unique massage is claimed to be more powerful and effective than conventional massage. Conceived and developed by UK practitioner, Gerry Pyves after injuring both his hands on the same day, the NO HANDS® Massage approach literally doesn’t use hands. Instead practitioners use the soft surfaces of their forearms, combined with their bodyweight, making the massage both deeper and more relaxing. Before my own massage Samantha Hardwick at Time Out Massage asked me a series of questions, including how I wanted to feel at the

precious nutrients for the body and will give you energy. • Drink spring water – the least mineralised is best to avoid overloading the kidneys, drink more but sip slowly. Have depurative herbal tea – mallow, boldo, rosemary, dandelion, nettle, artichoke etc. Ask your Natural Health Practitioner for which plants are best for you.
• A vegetable juice diet- red beetroot, carrot, cabbage - you have the choice; preferably the lacto-fermented version as this is beneficial for your intestine. These juices have a high nutritional value; and will reinforce your vitality and boost drainage.
end of the session. As I had a slight headache, I said I’d like this to be gone. Samantha has been practising massage since 2006 and is qualified in Holistic Massage, Sports Massage, Indian Head Massage including Indian Head Massage for Elderly/Palliative Care, NO HANDS® Massage and NO HANDS® Sports Massage, Hopi Ear Candling, Reflexology and Reiki. During the Massage I lay on my front, listening to music, whilst Samantha completed the massage. Afterwards I was asked to walk around the therapy room and explain if I felt different. I was pleased to say that after the relaxing treatment my headache had gone!
such as nettle, dandelion or wild garlic. You can make soups or teas with the leaves. Have a fresh outlook – Emotions need to flow freely too so let go of any past negativity and embrace the new. Have an acupuncture treatment! – Acupuncture was traditionally received each season for disease prevention. It helps the body to maintain a healthy balance and adapt to seasonal changes.

Love your liver Chinese Medicine believes that spring is ruled by the liver which cleanses the blood, nourishes the muscles and ensures a smooth energy (qi) circulation through the body. We therefore have to help the liver doing its job during this time. Take a walk in nature and go foraging! – Exercise and stretch your muscles to clear away any blockages of qi and while you’re out there go foraging for natural liver tonics

YOU MIGHT BE IN GREAT SHAPE PHYSICALLY. BUT WHAT KIND OF SHAPE IS YOUR HEARING IN? As we get older, our hearing is likely to deteriorate. Usually, it happens so gradually that we learn to accommodate its effects by becoming very good at things like recognising facial expressions, understanding body language or lip reading. Later, we may well begin to avoid certain situations where, for example, there is a lot of background noise. As a result, it can often be several years between first noticing a hearing difficulty, and doing something about it. But sometimes a hearing loss goes completely unnoticed, so other people have the difficult task of drawing attention to it.
Worth talking to someone who knows
Leightons Free Hearing Assessment
At the consultation you will:
As with most difficulties, it’s best to talk about it. It might just be that the hearing loss is treatable, in which case the sooner you know that, the better. If it isn’t, at least it’s worth discussing how it might affect every day life, quantifying the difficulty and then talking about what might be done.
At Leightons we understand that you only get one chance at great hearing – and we care that you have someone to rely on for professional guidance in this critical area. We can’t promise to turn back ageing – but we can show you how to protect and prolong your hearing levels – how to live life fully… year after year.

To make icing mix 3 cups of icing with ¼ cup of water, Put icing sugar into icing bags and snip of the end with scissors, it is easier if one person holds the bag open and the other puts the icing into the bag. gardening
Spring bloom Gardening expert Pippa Greenwood’s spring tips Provided the soil is not too cold and wet, make more sowings of colourful annuals direct in to the soil in a sunny part of the garden. Try candytuft, godetia, and star dust or cornflowers. As soon as flowers have faded on your forsythia, grab the secateurs and prune out over-grown stems and those that have become weak or damaged. Indoor cyclamen that decorated your house
Five alive 1. Start to mow your lawn on a weekly basis. For the first cut ensure that the blades are set to the highest level and every week reduce them bit by bit. Avoid a severe cut as this will damage the grass. 2. Rake or scarify the lawn as this will remove moss and thatch. A mechanical scarifier can be hired from a local tool hire shop. Water the lawn well after scarifiying. 3. With a dry spring and summer predicted install water butts wherever you can and harvest the water as this will be vital should a hose pipe ban be enforced. 4. Hostas will start to show, but you must help them out before the slugs get to them. Ensure that the slimy pests don’t touch these large leafed plant by placing slug pellets or spent coffee around the crowns. Egg shells and gravel also work. 5. Give your roses a hard prune back to a green bud or shoot and remove all dead wood. Feed them with a rose feed and a good mulch of organic compost at their base. over the winter months can now have a rest. Allow the top growth to die off naturally by withholding water. Then place the pot on its side in a cool shed. Use a besom or stiff broom to brush off worm casts from the lawn – left there they can cause slippery patches to develop, and act as seedbed for weeds! Keep deadheading spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils. If these faded flowerheads are removed promptly it will prevent valuable reserves being wasted as the plant forms seedheads, instead energy can be sent straight down to the bulbs so that they flower well again next year. If the soil is still very wet and you need to carry out speedy repairs to your lawn, try using pre-germinated grass seed. Just mix some of the seed with a handful of compost, moisten it and place it in a clear polythene bag. As soon as the seed has sprouted it can be used. Bedding plants that have been in the greenhouse (or warm area of the garden centre) need to be hardened off or acclimatised before being placed outside full time, start this process now. Continue to sow hardy flower seeds direct in to prepared areas of soil. Make a sowing of parsley now it too can go direct in to prepared soil. Give roses a good feed now to ensure they get off to a flying start – a specially formulated rose fertiliser should give great results and mulch around the base after watering in any feed you apply.

Graduate Landscapes garden having just been mulch, lawn edged and leaves raked.
Simple spring sprucing! As the birds make their presence known at an increasingly unreasonable hour of the morning it’s hard to ignore the early signs of spring and why would we want to? With the bright daffodils nodding their heads invitingly we creep outdoors to assess the toll winter has taken on our garden. But don’t fret, don’t turn away in dismay at the leaf covered, overgrown and rather unkempt looking garden, there are a number of very simple jobs that, if done now, will freshen up your garden and prepare your sleepy outdoor area ready for its burst into life. Fish out that cobweb covered rake and get those decomposing leaves off the ground. As with us humans, nature needs its little post winter boosts. Rejuvenate those potted plants by replacing the top layers of soil with fresh compost. Trim up those lawn edges to sharpen up your garden. Clear out weed ridden beds ready for a good mulching. care
Moorlands Lodge
The notion of “home” Living well with dementia According to Chris Meade at Signature Senior Living home Moorlands Lodge, “Home” can often be something of a relative concept for those living with dementia, sometimes in both physical and mental terms. In an ideal world “home” would mean a safe, warm, comfortable environment within a pleasant building designed, equipped and staffed for the sole purpose of providing specialist dementia care by fully trained and
CHD Living

highly experienced teams. Sadly, we do not live in an ideal world and many dementia residents are receiving unsatisfactory care. Because of this it is essential when choosing care, relatives ask the right questions. Chris Meade at Senior Living home Moorlands Lodge says, “When it comes to selecting a specialist dementia care home the advice is to approach that choice with great care, ask many questions, request evidence in support of claims made, research the background of the company concerned and trust your instincts – first impressions are often the best.” Recent statistics regarding the increasing numbers of people suffering from dementia and the rocketing costs on the already strained NHS, confirm that high quality care operators have a relevant place in the community. While it is not possible to make someone with dementia better, by ensuring the provision of high quality care and support, combined with meaningful stimulation and activities we ensure that people with early dementia continue to enjoy life. At Huntington House they use all the skills and techniques learnt over 30 years of experience to ensure that residents are always well looked after. Christine Henwell at Huntington House says, “Once you understand a resident, their routines and what it is that makes their world a better place, you can begin to make life fun and meaningful again. It’s just a matter of
understanding the illness and making sure the care provided reflects the needs of the individual concerned. Demand for our beds remains so high we are now planning a new state of the art specialist dementia unit to be built later in the year.” Similarly, at CHD Living they ensure they offer the best dementia care using a “personcentred” approach. Based on leading theory in current dementia practice, they work with families, to create a Life Story for each resident. This allows them to get to know each individual’s personal history whilst helping to revisit memories and experiences of bygone eras. Residents are also encouraged to personalise their own rooms with treasured possessions and a ‘memory box’ outside their door. Karen Sahlsberg, Manager of Surrey Heights & Hills Dementia Care Centre, Godalming, tells us, “At CHD Living, we pride ourselves on providing the best, specialist dementia care. We work in close consultation with our residents and their families to create a dementia care service that is unique to each individual’s needs and goals. Our overriding vision is of enabling our residents with dementia to live happy, fulfilled lives – whilst always retaining independence and choice.” Brownscombe House, Hindhead Road, Haslemere, 01428 643528, www.chdliving.co.uk Huntington House, Hindhead, Surrey, 01428 604600, www.huntingtonhouse.co.uk Moorlands Lodge, Hindhead, Surrey, 01428 601200, www.signature-care-homes.co.uk Surrey Heights & Hills Dementia Care Centre, 01428 682734, www.chdliving.co.uk Issue 33 April / May 2012

Schools around Directory of local schools
St. Ed’s goes senior There are great changes happening at St. Edmund’s School, Hindhead, where plans have been unveiled to expand the age range to G.C.S.E. Up until now the children have left after Common Entrance at 13 to go on to a wide range of senior schools including the most academically selective. Now there is another option for those parents looking for a high quality education at a day school with small classes and affordable fees. The Headmaster, Adam Walliker commented, “St. Edmund’s is rated outstanding by OFSTED for the quality of its care and we will extend our outstanding academic and pastoral qualities into the new senior years.” St. Ed’s already runs very successful year groups in years seven and eight and additional year seven places are available now for pupils starting in September 2012.

Out of Africa experience Giving students the opportunities and support to reach their full potential is central to the learning experience offered both on and off campus by Godalming College. Last summer was one of high adventure for thirteen upper sixth students. They took part in a four-week expedition to Tanzania, one of two trips that sixth-formers signed-up for with educational travel organization, Camps International. The group combined a safari in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro and time spent with the local Masai tribe, with community work. Their diving skills were tested during marine conservation work in the northern seaport of Tanga. A second student group from Godalming also experienced hands-on work with local communities when they travelled to Ladakh, India. Preparations are now well underway for this year’s expedition to Kenya in July. In a typical year over one hundred educational trips and visits take place. These provide sixth-formers with the chance to broaden their horizons as part of, the allround student experience. Find out more about all the courses and student activities available at Godalming College when the next year Open Evening takes place on Wednesday 11th July, 4:008:30pm. Highfield Rugby 1st XV
Successful scrum The extra hard work and training has certainly paid off for the Rugby 1st XV at Highfield, resulting in one of the strongest seasons to date in which they won all their matches bar one. Training began with pre-season camps before the start of The Autumn & Spring Term and a pre-season tour to Dorset, followed by three after school training sessions a week. The squad are looking forward to their End of Season Tour to Jersey at Easter. Highfield School enjoys a close relationship with Haslemere Rugby Club where several of the boys play in their Haslemere U13 team which has also enjoyed a fantastic season this year. Barnaby Gray, the Director of Sport at Highfield, says the partnership with Haslemere RFC “really benefits the development of the pupils, the success of the rugby at Highfield as well as the success of the Haslemere teams”. Young Human Rights Eight girls from The Royal School recently entered the Amnesty International Young Human Rights Reporter competition. The award encourages young people to Alice Reynolds become human rights reporters, to investigate what’s going on in the world and bring human rights abuses to light. The girls’ articles were on a range of subjects including the plight of drug addicts in Vietnam, honour killings, forced marriages, child soldiers and children in prison. Over 3000 entries nationwide were written and submitted under four age categories. Alice Reynolds pictured above, a year nine pupil, has been long-listed in a group of ten in the Lower Secondary group. Her article highlighted the conditions of detained drug addicts working in forced labour camps in Vietnam. Mrs Williams, Alice’s RE Teacher, is very proud of her pupil’s success as is Mrs Taylor-Gooby (Headmistress) who commented, “to be in the top ten out of 3000 entrants in such a worthwhile cause is a significant achievement. The moral and practical influence of Amnesty International is recognised around the world and The Royal School is proud to be associated with it”. Royal School, 01428 603052 Prior’s Field students
Top of the class In its 2011 Report, the Independent Schools Inspectorate graded Prior’s Field ‘excellent’ across all categories. Ways of saving a child The Save the Children Spring Auction at Nicholsons in Fernhurst was a great success. Alex Chalcroft, Sale Room Manager was delighted with the items donated and very happy to support such a good cause. Thanks go to Nicholsons for holding the sale, those who donated and those who bought at the auction. There were many items donated among them china, jewellery and art. The lots were grouped together according to value and type and, although not everything achieved a high price, the range was from £5 to £300. Along with the cakes sold during the day and at the preview, the total raised was £2120. www.savethechildren.org.uk

Walking for Steve
“Loving, fit and dynamic,” is how Debbie Isaac described her husband Steve aged 53, before he was struck down two years ago with Motor Neurone Disease. Unable to speak or walk, Steve is reliant on 24/7 care, too weak to do anything for himself apart from think, as his brain remains active. “It’s very painful to see him in this condition, that said, he remains unbelievably strong which makes me so proud,” Debbie explains. Steve and Debbie moved to Halsemere from London in 1987. During antenatal classes they met friends Dill Nash and Sue Green. To raise awareness of the disease the three ladies will walk the coastal path of the Isle of Wight in May, approximately 70 miles. “This is a very fitting tribute as it was Steve who introduced us and many other people to this beautiful walk.” For more information about MND visit www.mndassociation.org and if you’d like to support their cause please go to www.justgiving.com/walkingforsteve

Protestors are celebrating after plans to introduce pay and display parking in Haslemere were dropped. The decision was made at a meeting of the Waverley local committee at Chichester Hall, Witley on Friday 16 March. News that residents will not have pay and display parking meters in retail areas was welcomed by protestors from Haslemere who had packed the hall for the meeting. They wore specially printed yellow tee-shirts bearing the slogan ‘Haslemere demands a proper consultation and process’. But it’s not the end of the road for the campaign to keep parking measures out of the town – the committee agreed to look further at plans to introduce double yellow lines and parking bays in some roads. The drive to introduce pay and display meters was started by Surrey County Council, which planned to roll out the measures in town centres across the county. Haslemere residents launched a campaign against the move, saying it would have a detrimental effect on businesses and community groups, and complaining that there had been insufficient consultation. But protest leader Nikki Barton says that this is not the end of the campaign by Haslemere Action Group. “[We] want to ensure that the next phase of consultation is carried out exactly as the town community would expect and not as a repeat of what has gone on so far,” she said. www.haslemere.com/chamber

“Best-Singers-in-the-World”
Only a few years ago, it seemed impossible that Grayshott Concerts could ever persuade the brilliant world-renowned ‘A Cappella’ vocal group, The Tallis Scholars, to perform at St Luke’s Church in the village. But one should never underestimate Grayshott’s pulling power! After a year in the planning and with
only six weeks before the Tallis Scholars concert at 7.30pm on Friday 11 May, threequarters of the tickets have been sold already. So why is there such a buzz of excitement and pride building to welcome this group to the village? The Tallis Scholars, under director Peter Phillips, are regarded, quite simply, as

A Play with Clay Grayshott Children’s Theatre will present the wonderful Clay Time by theatre company Indefinite Articles on 14 April at 11am and 3pm. Each performance is unique with the story, setting and characters suggested by the audience and modelled out of a mound of clay by the performers. The children’s story is then brought to life through an improvised play performed to music. Afterwards the children are invited to play together on stage alongside the performers to make their own wonderful worlds of amazing animals, morphing monsters and lyrical landscapes from the clay. The price is a little higher than usual at £8 per ticket or £30 for a family of four. This is a one-off price rise and reflects the cost of such a high quality production. Tickets available from Grayshott Books, Grayshott Pottery and The Haslemere Sweet Shop. 34

Grayshott’s Chamber Choir, Excelsis, has attracted many plaudits since its inception in 2007 under the directorship of Robert Lewis. The choir has delighted audiences and critics alike in sell-out performances of demanding works with international soloists and ensembles. In 2009, Excelsis was the first amateur choir in Europe to perform Karl Jenkins’ dramatic Stabat Mater in the presence of the composer, who singled out the choir as “outstanding!” In the following year, a performance of Handel’s Messiah with baroque orchestra and a concert of largely unaccompanied European Sacred Music cemented the choir’s reputation for powerful performances. The 2012 programme sees the choir once again singing Choral Mass at Westminster Cathedral and providing two major performances for Grayshott Concerts at St Luke’s Church. “the best-in-the-world” says artistic director, Vivien Harrison. “Their clarity, purity and blend of polyphonic harmonies are as near perfection as you will ever find.” Their programme includes a variety of Renaissance composers from across Europe, including Palestrina, Orlando Gibbons, Byrd, Lotti, Lassus, Allegri and, of course, Tallis. Not everyone will immediately recognise all these composers, but their music, moving harmonies and perfect intonation has timeless appeal The performance, in association with ‘Buy In Grayshott’ (BIG) is sponsored by Applegarth Farm, Huntington House and XL-erate Ltd. Tickets won’t last long. Ring 01428 606666 or visit www.grayshottconcerts.co.uk
Speakers’ corner Arthritis Care in Grayshott will be presenting a wide range of interesting speakers in the next few months. Grayshott’s branch meets in the Village Hall on the first Tuesday of every month at 2pm. After the talk the meeting finishes with a homemade tea of sandwiches and cakes. Save the 18 ‘bus service The 18 ‘bus service that runs between Haslemere and Whitehill through Grayshott, Headley and Lindford could be withdrawn this year taking away the only remaining ‘bus service for a population of up to 30,000 people. The 18 receives a subsidy from Surrey County Council and the ‘bus operator, Stagecoach, consider this subsidy to be essential to the viability of the service. No subsidy, no ‘bus. Just like ‘bus services everywhere, there is a timetable, but this one could lead to the loss of the service. Hampshire County Councillor Ferris Cowper told us “The Surrey/Stagecoach discussions should be concluded in April and the last date for any rescue is the end of June. If nothing is done, the service will stop running in September. With much of the service affecting residents of Hampshire, I am lobbying Hampshire County Council very hard indeed to assist with continuation of the service. But everyone can help in two main ways; • Write to the Leader and Chief Executive of either Surrey County Council or Hampshire County Council, depending on www.lifemags.co.uk

where you like. •Use the service. Right now measurements are being taken to record the importance of the service, so it could be a case of use it or lose it!”
This April the Grayshott Stagers will present Something’s Afoot. A murder mystery musical, spoofing detective stories such as the works of Agatha Christie. Whilst it is called a musical, some might use the term mini-musical or even a play with music. Whichever, it is very funny with a few surprises along the way. The show involves a group of ten people who are stranded in an isolated English country estate, Rancour’s Retreat, during a raging thunderstorm. They have all been invited to the lake estate of Lord Dudley Rancour. When the wealthy lord is found dead, it’s a race against the clock to find out whodunit. The situation is complicated by rising floodwaters, power failures and suspicious behaviors carefully noted by Miss Tweed, an elderly amateur detective. The musical numbers include intriguing titles such as Suspicious, You Fell Out of the Sky, Dighy and I Don’t Know Why I Trust You (But I Do). Something’s Afoot hits the stage on 25, 26, 27 and 28 April at Grayshott Village Hall at 7.30pm each night. Tickets priced at £11, will be available from Grayshott Books from 2 April.

Tax crackdown
H
MRC is ratcheting up its crackdown on people who try to avoid paying tax. It is spreading its net wide. From plumbers, to restaurant owners, private tutors, to offshore investors, few appear safe as HMRC bids to narrow the so-called tax gap – the difference between tax collected and the tax they believe ought to be collected. The Revenue has said it will use “cuttingedge” tools such as web robot software to search the internet and find targeted information about specified people and companies. Using the software, the department will be able to pinpoint more accurately those people who have failed to pay the right amount of tax. The idea of HMRC banging on the door
demanding answers is likely to have those concerned waking up in a cold sweat but HMRC’s latest efforts are not just about illegal tax evasion. This time it is investigating tax avoidance. In May 2011, HMRC launched a consultation – “High Risk Tax Avoidance Schemes” – and is proposing to name and shame tax avoidance schemes that are unlikely to deliver the tax savings claimed. Anyone found to be using the schemes might have to pay the tax avoided upfront, plus an extra charge on that tax. This tax avoidance consultation is part of the Government’s end-goal to bring in an extra £7bn through initiatives to tackle tax avoidance, evasion and fraud by the end of the Parliament.
So, should individuals be worried? Most people will have little to be concerned about, but now, more than ever it may be appropriate to err on the side of caution on all tax-saving matters. There are a number of telltale signs to spot tax avoidance schemes. For example, if a scheme sounds too good to be true, it probably is, and if a confidentiality and secrecy agreement needs signing, you can be pretty sure that there is intellectual property involved which is designed to be 36
Life in Haslemere
LIH33_Page_36-37_Financial.indd 1
kept from HMRC. Likewise, if you are required to take out an insurance policy or there is a contingency fund, whether or not at your cost, against the tax benefits of the scheme failing to materialise then give it a wide berth. Tax mitigation should be based on sound principles, statutory reliefs and accepted HMRC practice. Watch out for contrived schemes too and any arrangement which in itself provides no fiscal or economic benefit other than the avoidance of tax should also be viewed with suspicion. The Revenue itself recognises that much avoidance of income tax by wealthy individuals has relied upon ‘sideways loss relief schemes’. These are schemes that seek to create trading losses, which are incurred in accounting form but not economic substance, which can then be used to offset an individual’s normal income from employment. Loss schemes have been the subject of anti-avoidance legislation in recent Finance Acts and the remaining schemes are “extremely contrived”, the Revenue warns. However, the tax avoidance crackdown should not stop people from looking at legitimate ways of saving tax, even though the differences between tax avoidance and tax mitigation are less than clear (tax avoidance is deemed to be a use of the tax law not envisaged by Parliament). At a time when our tax system appears Issue 33 April / May 2012

financial
to be getting more complicated it makes sense to try and pay HMRC no more than you are legally obliged to do so.
‘
There are a number of telltale signs to spot tax avoidance schemes.
’
It is also worth remembering that there are still many ways that people can legitimately reduce their tax bills. From making the most of family and spouses to maximise allowances, using offshore bonds to defer tax, to sacrificing part of your salary to bring your tax threshold down. Trusts and taxefficient investments can also be thrown into the mix and won’t be frowned upon by HMRC, so it is worthwhile exploring your options carefully with a specialist adviser. With HMRC sharpening its claws and the boundaries between what is legitimate and what is not becoming blurred, it is vitally important for people to seek expert help. Indeed, Nick Clegg,

LIH33_Page_36-37_Financial.indd 2
the Deputy Prime Minister, admits that consumers are ‘perfectly entitled’ to employ an expert tax adviser. It is an entitlement that people should grab with both hands. • To receive a complimentary guide covering Wealth Management, Retirement Planning or Inheritance Tax Planning, produced by St. James’s Place Wealth Management, contact Simon Labrow, Associate Partner of St. James’s Place Wealth Management on 01428 651857, by email simon.labrow@sjpp.co.uk or visit www.simonlabrow.co.uk
