ith all the festivities of Christmas and the excitement of New Year, our December and January issue definitely has a party theme - filled with everything you need to get you looking and feeling fabulous this 2013! First things first, we all know appearance is everything at a party. So, to make sure you’re partying in style, we’ve been looking at the latest embellishment trend – featuring metallics, sequins and for the real party animals, leather! But if you’re worried after the indulgence of the Christmas period you won’t fit into your funky party outfit, fear not as for our health feature we’ve been getting up close and personal with Haslemere’s personal trainers, discovering new ways to beat the bulge this winter. For those that were good and didn’t eat too much at Christmas and have instead been left with a lifetime’s supply of leftovers, the food section has plenty of creative ways to transform your food into delicious dishes.

Beauty with a purpose Haslemere based Rebecca Dyer has reached the finals of the Miss Hampshire heat in the country’s biggest beauty competition, Miss England. As part of the competition Rebecca has individually raised over £3000 for charities and over £8000 as part of a team.

Rebecca explains, “I have taken part in sponsored ‘No Make-up Days’, held concerts for local bands and collected spare change!”

Rebecca’s current scheme is a charity raffle for Help the Heroes, a charity particularly close to Rebecca’s heart as her fiancé was a soldier when they first met and was injured on a tour of duty in Afghanistan. “I have seen the amazing good that the charity does, and I am very proud to know that the money I raise can help someone else’s soldier.”

To get prizes for the raffle, due to take place on the 7 March, Rebecca has received support from a number of Haslemere businesses including the Aqua Roma spa, the Lythe Hill Hotel and The Luxury Gap. Lisa Huggins of Luxury Gap comments, “We felt we wanted to help her anyway we

90 years of Haslemere music 2013 sees the Haslemere Musical Society celebrate its 90th birthday. This muchloved society has entertained music-goers consistently with high-quality classical concerts. Its first concert in 1923 began with Beethoven and its first concert of 2013 will celebrate with Mendelssohn’s Elijah, one of the great works for chorus and orchestra.

The society is one of the few in England which has both its own choir and its own orchestra, as well as a buoyant membership of nearly 90. It is always on the look-out for new members and those interested will find more details on the Haslemere

Sara Shepley and Peter Herring treated visitors of Haslemere Museum to a plethora of funky fungi when they held their talk. The knowledgeable fungi enthusiasts brought with them many trays of mushrooms, toadstools and other fungi including Wax Caps, Chicken of the Woods, Poison Pie, Weeping Widow and Stinkhorn and were on hand to talk about the conditions that each fungi needed in which to flourish and where they could be found locally. They also identified fungi brought in by visitors and talked about their uses.

Time for tennis

The tennis members of Grayshott Spa were given a very pleasant surprise last Monday when reigning Wimbledon Doubles Champion, Jonny Marray,

dropped by for a spot of tennis on the indoor courts.

Currently preparing for a series of clinics and exhibitions with The Tennis Circus, Jonny teamed up with Grayshott Spa Head coach, and Tennis Circus founder, Danny Sapsford, to give a doubles master class.

Not only was Jonny impressed with the fantastic facilities on offer at the Spa, he also found some very encouraging words for the enthusiastic players.

“It’s always so inspiring for members to interact with the stars that they usually only see on the TV”, said Danny. “It was a real treat, and one that I’m sure they’ll remember for a very long time.”

Christmas carolling with the Chamber The Christmas season will officially start in Haslemere on Wednesday 12 December with Haslemere Chamber of Trade and Commerce’s Carol Concert. Taking place outside The White Horse in the High Street, the festive fun kicks off at 7pm.

This annual event is the Chamber’s way of saying a huge “Thank you” to the people of Haslemere for supporting local businesses, particularly during the summer months when the town was almost cut off due to the gas works.

Last year, around 500 people gathered around the war memorial to sing Christmas Carols and enjoy the complimentary mince pies, kindly donated by local retailers including Waitrose, Tesco, Co-op and The Granary, accompanied by free mulled wine.

The evening will be topped off with a visit from Father Christmas on his sleigh.

Nadine Gilbert and her family pets

Ask a busy person Just reading Nadine Gilbert’s CV is enough to make you feel tired: Interior styling for high profile clients,a glamping business,work abroad…oh and did I mention the 350km cycle ride from Agra to Jaipur she did in her spare time? So of course my first question has to be, how do you fit it all in?

“I believe in the adage ‘if you want something done, ask a busy person to do it!’ Both my husband (Nic) and I are workaholics. If we are awake, we are working and we both get excited by plotting and planning our next venture.”

On the subject of new ventures, Nadine begins to tell me about her two new websites, www.russellsinteriors.co.uk and www.challonersinteriors.co.uk “Recently, my husband and I bought some factories in Liphook. I have one, where I will be doing my design work from and also holding stock for my two new websites.

Challoners Interiors is more mainstream, with lower prices - great looking products with great prices. Russells Interiors will be for more specialist products that I have travelled far and wide to find. Some of them will be repeated but, sometimes, we will also just put up one-off pieces that we find from around the globe. We have started quite small, while we learn, but ultimately, Nadine’s work with a private residence in Courchevel

we have great plans for huge expansion, with many different lines coming on in the future.”

When Nadine talks about her vision for the new sites, it is clear to see her passion for developing new and exciting interiors.

“I want the site to be a source of inspiration and we are even going to have a Creative Village, to promote all the wonderful artisans and craftsmen that we meet along the way. There is some extraordinary talent out there that many don’t know how to find, so we want to make sure they all get a showcase.”

This passion for interiors dates back to Nadine’s twenties when she lived in London.

“I worked for top designer, Peter Inston in Regent’s Park. I ran his library, which was great, as I learnt about many suppliers and

I do think people are learning to be more eclectic in their homes. Rather than following the ‘hotel bedroom’ look, where everything matches, I think they will be choosing individual pieces because they love them - putting it all together, and see what look evolves...a lot less contrived.

By doing this, there will be no distinctive ‘looks’ or styles - each person will have their own style.

I do not believe that tasteless exists everyone should be encouraged to find his or her own style - and be confident about it.

Colour will also, finally, overpower the Farrow and Ball greige look...even coloured carpets will become the norm again - It’s been “Fifty Shades of Beige” for too long.

made many contacts but I never got directly involved with the design side. So, it was only at the age of 36 when I opened a furniture shop and, through offering advice to customers, I realised I had a natural ability. I also learnt that it is not always about being a great designer...it is more often about being organised and reading your client.”

It was also this passion and love of design that inspired Nadine to come out of what was meant to be her retirement three years ago when she closed down St Russells on Haslemere High Street.

“I had a great client who I had done a house for in Midhurst ask me if I could recommend another designer for him for his new house in Fulham and I just couldn’t resist.”

So as we enter 2013 and Nadine embarks on her next exciting interior adventure with www.russellsinteriors.co.uk and www. challonersinteriors.co.uk it is only fitting that her New Year’s resolution is “To keep healthy enough to keep going...”

If you could decorate anyone’s home whose would it be?

Oh, Robbie Williams for sure. I think he would be fun to work for and would be up for a bit of glamour and outrage - and not take it all too seriously. Much of the time, people become too focussed on things and worry too much about the impact of what they are doing. Homes should be fluid, living things and decorating your home should be a relaxed, happy affair, not a stressful one.

What is your favourite room at home and why?

Our bathroom...I designed it to look like a nightclub for my two (then) teenage boys.

It has a black glass shower, a whirlpool bath (with TV) that is raised to look out over the fields, changeable mood lighting and shag pile carpet. It is totally whacky but great fun and feels lovely to be in.

Frankie Fit demonstrating core exercises

Let’s get personal It’s that time of year again. The temperature has decreased but our waistline is on the increase. Salads have turned into calorific comfort food and summer evening strolls have become cosy nights in front of the telly. In desperate need of some exercise motivation the Life in Haslemere team have been testing out Haslemere’s personal trainers in a bid to be fit and lean in time for 2013!

Uniq Physique The second stop on our journey to fitness was at Uniq Physique. Established in 2008 by Ollie Beard as Muscleinc, before joining forces with Rachael in April 2012 to create Uniq Physique, this boutique style gym promises it’s members individual instruction and coaching to ensure that each person achieves his or her personal fitness goals. My own visit to Uniq Physique started with a friendly introduction from both Rachael and Ollie before Rachael gave me a quick warm up on the Cross Trainer.

Matt Roberts – “Training with You” The first personal trainer put to the test was Claire from the Matt Roberts – “Training with You” programme. Created with famous personal trainer, Matt Roberts, this new regime offers an alternative approach to getting fit and losing weight, through a six-week course of no gym memberships, no fad diets and no “in-fashion” training styles. Designed to be completed by groups of two to eight people, the course promises to change your lifestyle through revised fitness and eating behaviour forever. The programme began with an initial fitness consultation where Claire gave us all a fitness and movement assessment in the comfort of our office. This involved 20

evaluating our general health and current diet before completing a few introduction exercises. Each member of the team were then asked their goals for the programme and given a structured nutritional diet to follow, designed to improve training and optimise fat loss. Every week Claire then offered a different training routine to develop our fitness and help us reach our individual goals. This unique programme provided a great combination of individual personal training attention along with the camaraderie and motivation that comes with working with a group.

health After this Rachael then went through a legs circuit with me where I completed a series of exercises using the Uniq Physique equipment, designed to strengthen my leg muscles. Rachael repeated the circuit three times, gradually increasing the weights on the machines to find out how far she could push me. Legs worked, Ollie began work on my arms. Again this involved completing a circuit using Uniq Physique’s range of equipment, working my problem areas.

Before starting the circuit I mentioned to Ollie that my triceps (bingo wings) had always been a concern so Ollie put particular focus on this area, showing me specific exercises I could do to improve them. After arms Rachael came back to work on my abs. Here I was pleased to discover that instead of just doing hundreds of boring sit ups there were actually a lot of exercises you can do using equipment.

These included the Roman chair for my lower abdominal muscles and the Oblique twist machine for my side muscles. Finally my session was rounded off with some pad work with Ollie where I not only got to enjoy some cardio but also got to do lots of destressing punching!

Frankie Fit Last year my fitness levels were put to the test by personal trainer Frankie Fit. So when she found out the Life in Haslemere team were looking for some exercise motivation team this year she was more than happy to offer some advice.

Here she answered some of our questions on how to improve a common problem area, the core.

“The importance of working our core muscles is often underestimated. Our core muscles are made up of inner and outer core muscles. The inner core muscles are often forgotten and are key to our physicality whether you’re 20 or 70 years of age, whether you enjoy gardening or are someone that competes in triathlons.“ How do you engage your core muscles?

The abdominal scoop is the act of pulling your navel in toward your spine. Imagine that you’re zipping up a tight pair of pants or bracing for a punch by sucking your belly button tight in towards your back.

If you place your hands on your stomach whilst you do this you can feel your muscles tighten. You can also try tightening your belly button towards your spine even more when you breathe out. This will ensure strong engagement of your core muscles. www.lifemags.co.uk

What about my posture and breathing when I train?

Important to note during exercise it is key NOT to hold your breath, to keep your shoulders back and down (good posture) and your neck relaxed and loose. If you start to feel your neck get tense whilst doing the exercise gently look left to right. If this doesn’t work stop for a moment, relax and shrug your shoulders to get mobility in the neck and shoulders. Then try again.

How much should I do?

Core exercises can be held for extended periods of time and for further reps as the exerciser builds up strength. For example start by doing 3 sets of 10 seconds and then slowly work up to 5 sets of 30 seconds.

The exercises are in order of difficulty so start at the beginning and work your way up carefully. Once you feel confident and strong with the first few then move on to incorporate a more demanding exercise.

Don’t jump a stage, be patient and build yourself a good core strength.

Should I warm up before hand and stretch afterwards?

Yes, take 5-10 mins before these exercises to get your muscles warm by taking a fast walk,

Frankie Fit’s top core exercises (1) 4 point scoop On your hands and knees, with your back flat, keep your arms and neck relaxed and concentrate on scooping your stomach muscles around your belly button up towards your back as hard as you can.

(2) Half plank Lying on the floor with your elbows directly underneath your shoulders, keep yours palms facing up with your neck, shoulders and arm relaxed. Then prepare to go up by engaging your core muscles (scooping your abdominals up to your back), then lift your hips off the ground until your body is in a straight line from knees, hips to shoulders. To reduce intensity you can break at the hip by sticking your bottom in the air a little, bringing your elbows back so they stay under your shoulders but thereby reducing the weight on your stomach and back.

(3) Bridge Lying on the floor with your knees bent and your feet shoulder width apart, engage your core muscles and clench your bottom then squeeze your hips up as high as you can.

Imagine your body in a straight line from your hips, knees and shoulders. Your glutes (bottom) should be clenched to keep your hips up and your stomach engages to support your back.

(4) Core Crunch Lying on the floor with your knees bent and your feet shoulder width apart. Place your hands on your thighs. Zip your core muscles in towards you and engage your pelvic floor

marching up and down the stairs. When your muscles are warm take time to do a cat stretch and prayer stretch before and after you run through your exercises.

Frankie Fit 07967 683353 muscles, keeping them all tight then lift your shoulders off the ground and reach your hands up your thighs towards your knees. Your aim for as long as you choose to stay up there in good form is to constantly strive to reach as high as you can.

(5) Lean Back Sitting on the floor with your knees slightly bent in front of you for comfort, zip up your core muscles, set your posture and then lean back until you feel your core muscles working hard but no discomfort in your lower back.

The next step up would be leaning back and then whilst holding a swiss ball twist side to side and tap the ball on the floor either side of you. This will switch on your obliques, the muscles that give you your waist.

(6) Full Plank Lying on your front with your elbows underneath your shoulders, your palms facing up and your arms and neck relaxed, engage your core and lift yourself into a straight line from your toe to your head. If you can’t be sure you ‘re straight do this infront of a mirror or ask a friend to check you. Make sure your back is in neutral spine, so feels and looks straight.

If you feel lower back discomfort or you start to lower back try and correct your position, if you’re too tired come down and stretch.

Remember to cat stretch and prayer stretch once you’re finished.

Note: in all these exercises you can engage your pelvic floor muscles at the same time.

These are great for post natal exercisers but helpful for all ages.These exercises should not create discomfort in your back. If the do stop and consult a Dr, physio or personal trainer for advice.

Whether it is turkey sandwiches or bubble and squeak, Christmas is notorious for leftovers! Bored of the same old dishes, we’ve been talking to Haslemere’s food experts about their reusable recipes Trevor Cruickshank, Cruickshanks Cakes, 100 Wey Hill, Haslemere, 01428 652518 “This was a hard one to come up with. In my family we don’t tend to buy a lot of food at Christmas time. Just the normal amounts and we never “over eat” so, we never have leftovers.

We have Goose or Duck (never turkey!) so here is one I use.”

Duck Tie! 125g (5oz) fine asparagus, cut into 3cm (1in) chunks 2tbsp olive oil 25g (1oz) pack basil, stalks removed 4 skinless duck breasts, thinly sliced 2tsp Massaman Thai curry paste 2tbsp soy sauce 2tsp Thai fish sauce 25g (1oz) unsalted natural peanuts, roughly chopped 1. Place the asparagus in a steamer over a pan of simmering water.

2. Steam for 4-5 minutes until tender and set aside. Meanwhile heat the oil in a large frying pan or wok. Add the basil leaves and cook for 1-2 minutes until they turn slightly translucent and are crispy once removed.

3. Transfer the leaves to a plate lined with kitchen paper. Add the duck slices to the pan and cook on a high heat for 3-4 mins, stirring regularly. Then stir in the curry paste, soy sauce and fish sauce and cook for about 22

1 minute, until the duck is cooked and well coated.

4. Add the asparagus, sprinkle over the basil and peanuts and serve with egg or rice noodles.

Except one time under the guidance of an enthusiastic cook from Chiddingfold called Rob Terry. I remember that he told us that his ‘Godsend Pork and Bacon Casserole’ was a recipe he learned from his granny. ‘Godsend’ he told us, meant ‘leftovers’. This was the sort of thing that people cooked during the War.”

Godsend Pork and Bacon Casserole This is a rich dish best served with mashed or roast sweet potato. Meat is usually the roast pork joint left over from a previous meal.

500g (1lb) cooked pork cut into cubes 4 strips of uncooked smoked bacon, sliced 2 red meat seasoning cubes Hot water to cover 250g (8oz) big mushrooms, sliced 1/2 teaspoon mixed herbs 1 bay leaf Any left-over carrots or peas Boiled and mashed potatoes, mixed 50:50 with boiled and mashed sweet potatoes Cornflour to thicken

1. Strip off any crackling and most of the outside fat from the roast pork joint.

Cut meat into cubes and place in a large casserole.

2. Cut the smoked bacon with kitchen scissors into small slices, add and mix.

3. Crumble the two meat cubes on to the meat and cover the ingredients with hot water. Stir to dissolve.

4. Slice and add mushrooms, carrots and/or peas.

5. Cook in oven for just 20-30 minutes and thicken with cornflour. Make this by mixing two teaspoons of cornflour with a small amount of cold water in a mug eliminating lumps. Gradually add this to the casserole, stirring it to ensure even thickening. Place back into the oven for a few minutes until ready to serve.

6. Serve with seasonal vegetables and a mix of mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes with added butter, pepper and salt.

Smoked Haddock and Parsley Fishcakes 175g (6 oz) cooked and flaked smoked haddock 1 lime, grated zest Black pepper and salt 3 tbsp chopped parsley 1 green chilli, finely chopped 200g (7 oz) mashed potato Plain flour 1 egg, beaten Brown breadcrumbs, about 85g (3 oz) 3 tbsp olive oil 1. Place the cooked haddock, lime zest, seasoning, parsley, chilli and mashed potato into a bowl and mix together, taking care not to break up the fish too much. Shake some flour onto your hands and shape the mixture into four fishcakes.

2. Place the beaten egg onto a plate and put the breadcrumbs onto another plate. Take the fishcakes and dip both sides into the egg, then in the breadcrumbs to coat the exterior, repeat with the other three fishcakes. If you have time put to chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

3. Heat the oil in an Aga cast aluminium frying pan with a removable handle and gently fry the fishcakes on the Simmering Plate for 4-5 minutes until browned, turn over and place the frying pan on the floor of the Roasting Oven, remove the handle, and cook for a further 4 minutes.

4. Drain the fishcakes on a piece of kitchen paper and serve with a watercress and orange salad.

Some special drinks for the festive season and to see in the New Year are an important feature of most people’s shopping lists. Here’s a round-up of some local options that as well as supporting local businesses should also be a big hit at your Christmas festivities Words Simon Labrow Traditionally Champagne has been a favourite for celebrations but in recent years a number of English sparkling wines have impressed even the most discerning wine lovers. Richard Royds of Haslemere Cellar in West Street, features two excellent examples from award winning Nyetimber in West Chiltington. You can choose from the Classic Cuvee, a classic blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay or the Premier Cuvee Blancs de Blancs Chardonnay. The good news is both of their 24

Many will finish a special meal with port.

Traditionally port is produced in Portugal, but Lurgashall Winery has an excellent Elderberry Port along with Walnut, Sloe or Bramble Liqueurs. If you are looking for something traditional their Christmas Mead is ideal - This is a Hydromel Mead (no grape or apple base, just pure fermented honey).

The perfect winter warmer, either enjoyed with friends and a cheese board or as a welcome drink, it is warm and sensuous.

Christmas Mead is fantastic gently warmed on a Wood Burner, Aga or hob, the aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and honey epitomises the true taste and smell of Christmas.

Beer always features highly in my festive celebrations and we are very fortunate to be spoilt for choice around Haslemere.

Here are some seasonal favourites available direct from the breweries or in many of our local pubs: • Wassail was first brewed in the winter of 1980 as a one off Christmas winter warmer by Fran of Ballards Brewery in Nyewood. During that winter it proved so popular with the locals that he decided to continue with it all the time. Now the name is technically a little suspect as the drink wassail is a hot mulled cider traditionally drunk as an integral part of wassailing, an ancient southern English drinking ritual intended to ensure a good cider apple harvest the following year. I am sure Fran would be quick to remind me that wassail was derived from the Middle English wæs hæl, literally ‘good health’ or ‘be you healthy’. Anyway his winter beer is a strong chestnut ruby Premium ale with an oaky aroma containing sherry and mature fruit.

The flavour is warming, fruity and strong. At 6.0% it is considered by some to be a Barley Wine, but its characteristics are more those of a strong “Winter Warmer” style bitter.

• Havant Brewery has produced the winning beer at the last two annual Haslemere Beer Festivals. Their winter brew is Havant Unwraped, and is simply described by proprietors Mike and Caroline Charlton as “Christmas in a Glass”.

• Last but by no means least is Langham Brewery in Lodsworth. Their Christmas Cracker ABV 4.5% - is a Christmas mystery beer. It has a different recipe every year with a seasonal twist for extra yuletide cheer!

There’s plenty to distract you from your garden at this time of year. But whether you are still up to your elbows in tinsel and turkey or feeling the effects of too much indulgence, don’t forget YOUR GARDEN NEEDS YOU!!!

Here Pippa Greenwood tells us what jobs we should be doing in the garden this New Year.

Do a quick check to see if anything has been hit by frost or other cold weather injury blackened foliage, often flopping (or total plant collapse) are classic signs. If at all possible, don’t cut back the injured parts, they may look pretty grim but, left in place, they will help to protect the rest of the plant.

Only cut back damage if it is seriously soggy or showing signs of fungal growth. Provide weather protection where necessary - fleece (double or treble layers), fleece-covered tunnels and cloches, piled up dry leaves etc all help!

Enjoy a day out and visit a local garden with lots of winter interest. Make a note of those plants that look particularly good during winter – perhaps bark colour or texture, or an interesting or dramatic outline. Then make sure that, where feasible, you plant more of them in positions where you can really enjoy them next winter.

This is the perfect time to prune both white and red currants. All you need to do now 26

is use sharp secateurs to cut about an inch (2.5cm) off the stems. Take the opportunity to rake up fallen leaves from around the plants as these may harbour diseases.

The bright orange raised spots of coral spot are particularly prominent on bare winter branches of many woody shrubs and trees.

Figs, maples (Acer spp) and magnolias are especially prone. Prune infected areas out, back to perfectly healthy wood and bin or burn the prunings. Although often thought of as harmless this fungus can cause dieback.

Adequate air circulation is essential in the greenhouse at this time of year. Wherever possible open vents and windows, but try to avoid chilling any plants with cold draughts.

If necessary consider buying a small electric fan heater to keep the air warm and moving.

Shut down vents and windows, and close doors as soon as temperatures drop.

Don’t forget that it is not just plants that may need winter protection- ensure that outside pipe work and taps are well insulated to prevent freezing...or switch off at the mains to be extra safe. Bubblewrap polythene, or strips of old blankets or curtains wrapped around, swaddling-style,

all help!

Fruit trees such as apples and pears will benefit from regular pruning and winter works well for most. So, if unsure about what to do, grab a book with all the instructions you need, then arm yourself with sharp secateurs and get to work. If you find any dead or obviously diseased stems, prune these out and bin or burn them. Check that the trunks of youngish plants are protected against rabbits - spiral tree guards are inexpensive and effective if you have not got the time to install a more elaborate defense!

Hard work for the Chamber

Haslemere Chamber Meet the Business networking event

2012 has been a tough year for businesses everywhere, but retail businesses in particular have suffered the worst economic conditions in living memory.

In January of this year, Surrey County Council proposed to introduce Pay & Display meters on streets where it had previously been free to park amongst a set of parking controls, which threatened to cause huge problems for residents as well as shoppers.

The issue united the majority of the

town! Haslemere Chamber of Trade President, Julianne Evans, joined forces with local residents, the Haslemere Society and the Town Council to fight the proposals, raising a petition which eventually got over 5,000 signatures, as well as meeting with Haslemere’s Surrey councillor to put the case against such extreme measures.

This massive effort culminated in Mrs Evans having the opportunity to speak about the petition in front of a packed hall

at the Local Committee meeting, where the measures were to be discussed. The proposals for Pay & Display were dropped and further consultation took place.

However, the fight goes on, because Surrey County Council have not kept to their word regarding yellow lines and Residents Only Permits.

Meanwhile, Waverley Borough Council have hiked the prices in the town centre car park and extended the charging hours, seriously affecting the activities of the

haslemere chamber town’s two iconic charities – Haslemere Hall and Haslemere Museum. Once again, the Chamber swung into action on their behalf and raised a petition that allowed Mrs Evans to speak at the Waverley Executive meeting. As a result, a review of the car parking charges will take place in a year’s time.

Not content with this, Waverley are now making moves to resurface the ‘Fairground’ car park in Wey Hill and start charging. Objectors are horrified that Waverley Borough Council and Surrey County Council have not adequately considered the issue of displacement and do not seem to be working for the interests of the town, seemingly only focused on the money.

To add insult to injury, gas mains replacement works closed Lower Street for four months and Shepherds Hill for a month, effectively blocking access for all the shoppers who usually come in from the Midhurst direction. During the first week, footfall dropped by 15% or more for all the shops in the town and remained low for at least the first month.

Once again, the Chamber were involved in discussions with SCC and SGN to try to mitigate the impact of these works as much as possible by implementing local signage, lobbying Waverley for help and being in regular contact with the works manager. Unfortunately, the impact of these works is ongoing, as some people are still unaware that the road is no longer closed.

“If we thought things couldn’t get any worse. We were wrong.” Said Julianne Evans. “With six weeks to go before Christmas, Haslemere traders were up in arms following a shock ban on parking outside a string of shops in busy West Street. There was no prior warning when Guildford Borough Council (acting on a request from Surrey County Council) sealed off ALL the bays outside the shops

closest to the High Street.

The parking ban, which was imposed with immediate effect, was to extend until February 1st 2013. This was yet more distress for local businesses banking on the busy period leading up to Christmas making up for the losses suffered during the year with the parking and gasworks headache” Apparently the suspension was necessitated by the temporary traffic order allowing for the erection of scaffolding and hoarding due to the redevelopment in Lower Street thus imposes a oneway system on part of Lower Street and impacting on West Street, threatening to cause traffic diversions for five weeks.

Haslemere Town Council were also left in the dark about the parking bay closures.

“The lack of notice about the parking bay bans was yet another example

of the complete and utter lack of communication and consultation by Surrey County Council – why on earth not make West Street one-way as well as Lower Street so that people can still park there?” Said Julianne.” It really seemed as though Surrey CC was doing all it could to stop people coming to shop in Haslemere!” www.haslemere.com/chamber

Chilling charity In May 2012, Lythe Hill hotel welcomed in a new General Manager, Simon Drake, who was surprised that the hotel did not already hold events to support local charities. The Halloween Ball was the first charity event held at Lythe Hill Hotel and was in aid of ‘Shooting Star Chase’ and ‘Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice’. The ball, hosted by culinary expert and BBC Masterchef presenter ‘Gregg Wallace’ took place in the hotel’s new marquee that will be used to host weddings Marley Flowers

throughout the spring and summer and can hold up to 200 guests.

Oversold by 50 places, the ball also treated guests to a three course meal cooked by award winning chefs, before a raffle and auction hosted by Gregg Wallace. After the live auction there was a firework display and then live music and dancing until midnight.

The evening raised in total over £14,000 for the two local charities.

A preview evening to launch the attractively styled premises was attended by a select group of people including The Mayor, The President of The Chamber of Trade, family, friends and well wishers. Surrey Care Awards’ Manager of the Year Brownscombe House Nursing home’s Abbygail Nyadore has won the Surrey Care Awards’ Manager of the Year.

Abbygail won the award after receiving nominations from relatives, residents and staff at Brownscombe house, who wrote testimonials regarding their relationships to Abby. Abby’s range of testimonials commented on her work ethic, support, holistic care, open door policy and a CQC Outstanding Report with no requirements. This was submitted to the Surrey Care Association Awards Panel and Abbygail was selected to be one of four finalists throughout Surrey.

A large gala dinner was then held in the honour of all the finalists at Epsom Downs Racecourse, where Abbygail was presented with her award. Senior Carers, Jane Giles was also recognised at the ceremony a finalist in the Surrey Care Awards for Beyond the call of duty.

Spinning a new yarn As an entrepreneurial nurse, Marilyn Hoare bought Huntington House as a derelict building in 1977. After nearly a year of renovations she opened it as a nursing home, gaining an unrivalled reputation in the local community for her passionate approach to care of the elderly.

However, after a bout of cancer, she had to stop nursing. She now invests her time in all other aspects of the nursing home.

Her most recent venture is our flock of rare-breed sheep. After shearing them over the summer, Marilyn sent the wool to be spun into yarn. This homegrown

wool is now being used by our knitting circle to create colourful clothes and blankets. These woolly garments will then be donated to a hospital in Cape Town where they will be given to poverty stricken mothers and their newborn babies. ”Inevitably our knitting circle is growing in popularity and is now open to nonresidents. We have recently welcomed two ladies from the Haslemere Women’s Institute,” Marilyn explains.

Moorlands Lodge shines bright at the Surrey Care Award 2012

Despite having been open for only eight months, the care and nursing team at Moorlands Lodge were nominated for the ‘Nursing Team of the Year’ Award through the Surrey Care Association. Members of the team including Wellbeing Manager Sarah Moor, Nurses Diana Reis & Michelle Davis and Lead Carer Michelle Benge, enjoyed star spangled evening at Epsom Race Course. Celebrities Michael Buerk and Alvin Stardust were in attendance, and the team were treated to a highly entertaining evening. Although the team did not win the first prize, they were in the top four, an outstanding accolade to such a new team. Creenagh said, “I am so proud of what the team has achieved. The information to support this nomination came from residents and families who spoke of professionalism, compassion, empathy and skill in addition to the friendship and support that is always on hand, and one resident who said ‘they make it feel like home’.”

Hidden Gardens of Grayshott

Hidden Gardens of Grayshott is a biennial event where private gardens in Grayshott open their gates to the public to raise money for gardening projects around the village.

The 2013 event will take place on the weekend from 4-5 May, with over 20 gardens and two allotment sites to be viewed.

Entry to this year’s event is £5 per person with children under 16 free.

Grayshott Concerts wins national music prize Grayshott Concerts have achieved national recognition for their work in bringing music into the community.

Every year, Making Music, the national organisation representing over 3000 local voluntary music groups throughout the UK, awards the Lady Hilary Groves Prize to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to music in the community.

However, this year they have decided to award the prize, a certificate signed by HRH

The Duchess of Kent, Patron of Making Music, jointly to the founders of Grayshott Concerts, Peter and Vivien Harrison.

The award was presented to Peter and Vivien during the interval of their latest community concert, featuring ‘The Peacemakers’ composed and conducted by Karl Jenkins, Patron of Grayshott Concerts and performed

by Excelsis, the choir they helped form in 2007.

Hidden Gardens of Grayshott

Railings restored An initiative of the Grayshott Village Archive has resulted in the restoration of very special railings in Grayshott.

The railings surrounding the Phil Bates and tree planted to Richard Peskett. commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in 1935 have been restored and the plaque in St. Luke’s churchyard at the foot of the Yew tree planted to commemorate their Coronation in 1911.

Restored in the workshop of Richard Peskett, local specialist restorer of veteran cars and Friends Secretary of the Village Archive, who explained that the tree and railings situated at the apex of Headley Road and Whitmore Vale Road in front of St. Luke’s church were originally funded by the Grayshott Mothers Union as their contribution to the Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1935.The railings were made by a Mr.Venning (a fine example of wrought iron craftsmanship) and the tree planted by the Grayshott Girl Guides.

The Yew tree in the churchyard was planted (along with a similar tree on the Lyndon Green, now known as the ‘Granny Robinson’s’ tree) for the 1911 Coronation with a suitable plaque commemorating the event carried out by children from Grayshott school.

The 14 December will see folk musicians, Chris Green, Jude Rees and Sophie Matthews present a special festive show at Grayshott Village Hall. Through costume, music, song and story-telling, as well as a Mummer’s Play, Blast from the Past, audiences will be transported to Victorian times and re-create the Christmas of a bygone age.

Guests are encouraged to come along in Victorian fancy dress and to bring their own food to enjoy alongside the licensed bar.
