It’s a celebration There is plenty to celebrate in Haslemere. The fifth annual Haslemere Festival is just around the corner, our beloved museum is turning 125 and with the longer luscious days it’s safe to say we’re officially in spring! Getting us in the celebratory spirit, the museum has been letting us in on how they plan on marking their big birthday whilst you share some of your memories of the museum from over the decades. April sees our nation of pet lovers come together for National Pet Month. So to celebrate we’ve been finding out from Haslemere Cats’ Protection the important role they play in rehoming pets in the area. And to make sure we’re healthy enough for all this celebrating we’ve been talking to some of Haslemere’s health experts about alternative ways to get fit and healthy this spring. So sit back, relax and celebrate!

Our 2000 sq ft showroom now also offers a range of interior solutions for other areas of your home, including fitted Bedrooms, Home Offices, Utility/Laundry Rooms and even Media Rooms.

Happy reading!

ABBA Gold Tribute Act

Sound of success in Haslemere The Haslemere Musical Society

The orchestra and chorus of the Haslemere Musical Society have begun rehearsals for their next show. The performance follows the success of their Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah performance in March. Due to take place on 4 May the society will perform perennial concert hall favourites including items from Rossini, Donizetti, Gounod, Verdi, Puccini and Wagner.

“It will be an evening for lovers of beautiful melodies and the audience will leave humming many of their favourite tunes,” said Joe McDonald, Marketing Director of HMS. “Among the items that the audience will know and love are the Overture to Rossini’s Barber of Seville; the Chorus of Wedding Guests from Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor; the Ballet Music from Gounod’s Faust and the Anvil Chorus from Verdi’s Il Trovatore. There will be many other famous numbers, instantly recognised by our audience.” HMS is currently celebrating its 90th year and hopes this next show will help them continue to deliver a range of musical concerts to the area. Cycle sportive celebrates fifth birthday! The Little Lumpy Cycle Sportive is back in Haslemere for its fifth year, to test the stamina of local cyclists. Taking place on Sunday, May 19, there are three levels of endurance. These include Sport: 38 mile cycle with 1,970ft of climbing; Challenge: 59 mile cycle with 4,073ft of climbing and the aptly named, Epic: 100 mile cycle with 7,320 ft of climbing. All the routes take cyclists through the Sussex and Hampshire Weald to the South Downs at South Harting, where the Challenge and Epic routes branch off, taking riders over more testing climbs.

The next two months will see Haslemere’s U3A host two very exciting talks. Firstly on Monday 15 April at Haslemere Hall there will be a visit from Fran Sandham as he talks about his solo walk 3000 miles across Africa. Pam Pullen of the U3A explains, “Fran Sandham decided 6

It is hoped, that Haslemere U3A Members will have the chance to be some of the first members of the public to visit ‘Pavilion in the Park’ in the not too distant future.” See our What’s On page (40) for details.

This year sees the Haslemere Educational Museum celebrate their 125th anniversary. As a first step to mark their successes over the decades, a 160ft long “125 Museum Mural”, was unveiled on Wey Hill, (the old Clements site hoarding by the railway tunnel) by Mayor of Haslemere, Councillor Cyndy Lancaster. Created and painted by the HYPE Team – a group of talented teenagers who gather at the Museum and students from local secondary schools Woolmer Hill, Rodborough and Bohunt the 125 Mural depicts museum scenes from the last hundred years. These feature the Museum’s much loved 7ft stuffed mascot, “Arthur the Bear”, a giant spider crab and even an Egyptian Mummy. To read our full article on the museum’s anniversary go to page 28. smaller budgets

When it comes to interior design it is easy to spend a fortune - I know this all too well having just taken on the task of decorating my own home. Thankfully for the savvy shopper there are many savings to be had. Here we let you in on some of our favourite thrifty tips! The best things in life are free

Vintage wallpaper, £44 per roll, Scandi Living Ltd

What better way to save money when doing up your home then getting your stuff for free? Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean breaking any laws or trawling any back streets. There are plenty of fantastic websites that specialise in freebies. Freecycle.org and gumtree.com are possibly the most well known, allowing you to easily search through a variety of donations from the comfort of your home. Once you’ve selected your desired item you simply sign up to the website and contact the donator directly. This will also enable to sign up to their mailing lists so you never miss out on a bargain! The only cons of this are that obviously you can’t be too specific over what you get, but this does make you more creative. Some sites also state you have to give to receive, however if you’re doing up your home

John Nicholson’s Fine Art Auctioneers

and want to get rid of some old items this can be a bonus!

Classic

Like clothes, you can’t go wrong with classic designs when decorating your interiors. It is the best way to save you money in the long run. Nadine Gilbert at Russells explains, “They are classic for a reason, because they have stood the test of time. Often what marks a thing out as cheap, is that they get the lines wrong - so develop an eye for seeing a shape that looks much more expensive than it is. Same goes for colours, tones and textures.”

Size isn’t everything

You don’t have to spend fortunes on large accessories when decorating your interiors. By making a few small changes you can transform your home. Linda Swarbrick at Scandi Living suggests wallpapering a small area, such as a prominent wall, an alcove or recesses by chimney breast. Linda continues, “a table runner is also a very simple and low cost way to transform a dining table and is easy to change according to the season.”

Round two

Instead of ‘second hand’ think vintage and you will open your eyes to a whole new world of furniture possibilities. Not only is second hand, sorry vintage, furniture often cheaper, it also is more likely to be better quality, unique and just generally have more character. Haslemere has plenty of charity shops filled with hidden furniture treasures, including Haslemere Care on the High Street in Haslemere. Here you will find a range of fantastic pieces and your money will help the charity continue to help the Haslemere Community. Kate Gillman at interior designers, Isabel Ballardie, continues, “There are some real bargains to be had at the right charity shops. A client of ours purchased a dresser, sanded it down, painted it up and it looked great.” John Nicholson’s Auctioneers on Midhurst road is also lots of fun but of course if you don’t fancy going to a live auction you can do it all online at possibly the most famous online auction website of all ebay.co.uk

Lighter life

Good lighting can make a room look designer without much cost. Nadine says, “it’s all in quantity and placement. Remember to place numerous sources of light so that you can layer the effect - and make sure you put them at all different heights - up-lighters on the floor, table lamps, standard lamps and ceiling lights. You can also use a dimmer switch on your down-lighters - again, big effect, little effort, little cost (Check with your electrician first.)”

Smith at Snug Interiors explains, “We have found that our customers are looking for well- made, timeless pieces which are built to last. Some customers are cutting back on bed frames whilst still investing in a high quality base and mattress, which is a necessity for a good nights sleep.”

Space and money saver

If you’re tight on storage space and want to get additional features from your bed, Charlotte suggests the Snug Interiors Ottoman bed. The ultimate storage solution this bed easily lifts up to provide storage underneath the full width and length of your mattress. Not only does this save space but also saves you money on buying extra storage units.

Best to invest

Part of doing your interiors on a budget is knowing where to spend your money. If you go cheap on something that you use a lot it is false economy. With an average bed life span of seven years, you’re set to spend more than 20,000 hrs snuggled up. It is therefore essential to find the most comfortable and supportive bed for you. Investing in a high quality bed makes long-term financial sense, as making an inferior purchase could see you replacing the bed much sooner. Charlotte www.lifemags.co.uk

Grayshott Spa

Spring into action A new season is upon us and as much as we’re enjoying the warmer temperatures and lighter evenings, it’s time to throw out the jumpers and prepare for our new slightly less forgiving wardrobes! But because we know hitting the treadmill and living on a lettuce leaf isn’t for everybody, we’ve been finding out from Haslemere’s fitness experts some alternative ways to get your new spring body Perfect Pilates First stop on my new season fitness journey took me to new Pilates fitness studio, Sublimepilates. Like most of us, I dream of having a washboard stomach, so Pilates with its focus on core muscle groups seemed like a great option. However, on arrival I soon discovered that Pilates could offer so much more. This is because as well as core exercises, Pilates provides a holistic

approach to the re-education of posture, alleviating aches and pains, relieving stress and tension whilst also promoting a general feeling of wellbeing. The session began with trained Pilates practitioner, Amanda Johnston carrying out an initial consultation to establish my fitness levels and any injuries or ailments I may have. Here I told Amanda about my current running routine, sleeping habits and diet. Amanda then

asked me to complete a few exercises so she could get a better idea of my posture. Once she had made her assessment we began a series of bespoke exercises on the Sublime studio specialised equipment including the Wunda Chair, Reformer and Cadilac. While at first I was a bit intimidated by the slightly unusual looking equipment, my concerns were soon relieved as Amanda carefully took me through each exercise that had been designed to meet my needs based on my assessment. Despite completing a hard workout, I left the studio feeling reenergised and surprisingly relaxed.

health there is an urgent need for this type of restoration diet in the UK. At the moment, many of my clients feel they need to go abroad to undertake serious treatments that target the digestive system. With the use of a scientifically-backed dietary protocol, specific eating practices and specialist therapeutic treatments, we are tackling health from the inside out.” Not for the faint hearted, the Grayshott Programme is a strict and precise routine including two semi fast days with a sevenday minimum commitment. However, it isn’t all doom and gloom as the programme also includes abdominal massages, hydro baths and liver compresses to support the detoxification processes, as well as gentle exercise such as Tai Chi, relaxation and breathing classes. But most importantly unlike many detox programmes an educational lecture programme is also provided to explain the protocol and a plan for on-going maintenance in addition to post-departure support.

Spring in your step Ok no one will blame you for lacking the motivation to exercise in the winter, it’s cold, dark and quite frankly miserable! However, exercising outdoors in the spring summer months will not only make you look better but feel better too. Rachael Elliott-Hughes at Uniq Physique continues, “Exercising outdoors will boost your mood, improve your energy levels and raise those all-important Vitamin D3 levels – so important for reducing the effects of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Whatever your preferred choice of exercise aim to do at least 30 minutes on five days of the week

at a brisk level, in order to see benefits to your health and fitness.”

Alternative abs Despite popular belief, completing hundreds and hundreds of sit-ups isn’t the way to get amazing abs – phew! Leading fat loss specialist, Heather Smith from Fit Biz believes if you stick to the following rules 90% of the time you are much more likely to get (and keep) your amazing abs. Lifestyle: Central stomach fat (rather than that on your hips, which is caused by sugar) relates to high stress hormones, at the wrong times. Help your body keep them under control by: getting to bed at 10pm, getting 20 minutes of daylight every day, and taking some time out for yourself.

Nutrition: Remove absolutely EVERYTHING packaged or processed from your diet. Instead, eat just fresh fruit and veg, nuts and seeds, meat and fish, and water. Omega 3 is VERY important; so much so that I’d suggest taking a good quality supplement. Exercise: Resistance training is really effective for burning fat – remember you’re trying to de-stress, so don’t train yourself into the floor!

One of the most common greenhouse pests, this minute creature feeds underneath the leaves causing flecking of the leaf surface, followed by the production of webbing and, gradually the browning and death of the leaves. The biological control A tiny red predatory mite which seeks out its prey. This mite eats red spider mite and even its eggs. Especially useful because there are many chemical resistant strains of red spider mite too.

General Grow Your Own Pests

Keep Your Garden Pest-free, Without Chemicals However careful you are, you are likely to come across pests in your garden or greenhouse. If you prefer to avoid using chemicals, try biological control. All this means is that you introduce natural enemies of these pests, and let them sort out your problems for you!

Whether you’re plagued by carrot fly, onion fly or any of the other common veg plot nightmares you can now use a nematode mix especially formulated for this range of pests, called Nemasys Grow Your Own…it really makes a big impact!

Aphids These pests, commonly known as greenfly and blackfly, feed by sucking sap, so cause yellowing, weakening, distortion and may also spread lethal virus infections too. Like whitefly, aphids excrete sticky honeydew. The Biological Control The best way to sort out aphids is with a mixture of different controls. Between them they will do a great job of getting rid of greenfly and blackfly!

Tips for success There is an ever-increasing range of these fantastic ‘green’ controls available and between them they should be able to keep on top of many common pests. Biological controls like these pose no threat to humans, pets or wildlife and have many advantages, including: • Your conservatory pests can be controlled without the need for chemicals, something which is especially appealing in an area so close to the house and where you may well sit and eat or drink. • Biological controls are the ultimate green way to keep pests at bay – they are targeted to control the pest, but will not harm humans, pets or wildlife. • Many pests are now resistant to the commonly used garden insecticides, so however much you spray, they still won’t be controlled – biological control overcomes this. • It is extremely successful and many commercial growers of glasshouse crops use it because it works so well. • There are no problems with your vegetables, herbs or fruit being contaminated with any pesticide residues or contamination.

So what does it work for? Slugs Voted number one pest in 2012 by the RHS, the National Trust and most of us gardeners too! 20

Life in Haslemere

The biological control A nematode drench called Nemaslug which goes into the soil and, without risk to anything else, kills off slugs – perfect if you grow potatoes and don’t want them tunnelled, love hostas, or perhaps just want some goodlooking plants in your garden this spring! Great used just as you plant out summer bedding or garden ready and plug plants.

Vine weevils These small matt black beetles cause lots of notches around leaf edges, but the real problem is their young – creamy coloured C-shaped grubs which feed on plant roots, especially those in containers and can kill off whole summer displays. The Biological control Nemasys for Vine Weevils, another nematode drench which is especially effective on plants in containers.

Glasshouse whitefly Resembling a minute moth when adult, both this and the young stages feed by sucking plant sap, so reducing vigour and causing distortion. Whitefly breed very rapidly and soon reach epidemic proportions. As they feed they excrete a liquid called honeydew which makes sticky patches on the leaves. The Biological Control A tiny wasp only about 0.6 mm long. When

These great, green options work brilliantly, but always make sure you follow the instructions carefully and remember you are dealing with living creatures, so they need to be treated properly! Because you’re buying living critters, biological controls are not available in garden centres, but you can find out more about each of these solutions, view and purchase the entire range at www. pippagreenwood.com

devils punchbowl

Seven things you didn’t know about our local natural wonder

It might not be one of the seven ‘great’ natural wonders, but there are still lots of wonderful things about the Devil’s Punch Bowl 1) Did you know in 1786 it was the site of a murder?

On Sunday 24 September 1786 a sailor was walking back to Portsmouth. He stopped at a public house in Mousehill, near Godalming, and met three men. He paid for their drinks and joined them on their journey. The group stopped again at the Red Lion Inn in Thursley and afterwards followed the road to Hindhead. The three men proceeded to strip the sailor naked, steal his money and stab him to death with their knives. Two shepherds witnessed the crime and ran back to the Red Lion to raise the alarm. The three murderers were chased and arrested at Rake by a soldier named Thomas Doe. The villains, named Michael Casey, Edward Lonegon and James Marshall, were locked in Guildford Prison for six months and then condemned to death. They were hanged on 7 April 1787 at Hindhead, close to where the murder was committed. Their bodies were taken down, preserved in tar and then chained to the gibbet. Soon afterwards, the place was renamed Gibbet Hill and became widely feared as dangerous and cursed. The identity of the murdered sailor was never discovered. Current research suggests that he may have been a gentleman named Edward Hardman. The sailor’s body was buried in Thursley churchyard and a memorial stone to him was erected on Gibbet Hill.

2) Did you know artist Jon Edgar has been working outside, on site, throughout the winter as part of the Heritage Lottery funded A3D project? The unique project has seen Jon create a sculpture, working with local schools to celebrate the local landscapes reunited now the road has been tunnelled. As he is an improviser, the sculpture has emerged from his being immersed with the culture, history, wildlife and landscape.

3) Did you know on Sunday 3 November the Devil’s Punch Bowl will host the Wiggle Devils Punch?

This challenging bike ride, through the scenic roads between the North and South Downs, loops around the stunning Devils Punch Bowl, before briefing heading up into the North Downs. Cyclists have a choice of a standard 54-mile route or an epic 71 mile option.

6) Did you know it is going back to nature? The London to Portsmouth road (also known as the old A3) used to surround the Devil’s Punch Bowl, however this was closed in July 2011 due to the opening of the Hindhead tunnel. The land is now owned and maintained by the National Trust as part of the “Hindhead Commons and the Devil’s Punch Bowl” property. Matthew Cusack of the National Trust explains, “The A3 effectively turned the property into two islands. If you are, say, a small butterfly, looking at the roadside trees then it’s like you are standing at the coast and looking across to France. You’re not going to swim across in the hope of finding land. We have therefore thinned out all of the ‘weed’ type trees such as the birch and holly, which has grown up between the mature oaks that we are leaving. By doing this, we have linked the heathland areas and as a result opened up some stunning views across the Punch Bowl and beyond. It’s easy to put up a tall gleaming tower in a city, but we’ve taken something away from the environment and we will make it look as if it was never there in the first place which I think in some respects is much harder.” 7) Did you know it has appeared in novels? In Charles Dickens’ novel Nicholas Nickleby, Nicholas and Smike visit the Devil’s Punch Bowl on their journey to Portsmouth while in the third novel in the Horatio Hornblower series, Flying Colours by C.S. Forester, makes a one-line reference to the Devil’s Punch Bowl in chapter eighteen as Hornblower is returning to London: “Even the marvellous beauty of the Devil’s Punch Bowl was lost on Hornblower as they drove past it.”

4) Did you know there are lots of myths about its creation? One story from the Middle Ages suggests the Devil himself got so annoyed by all the churches being created in Sussex that he decided to dig a channel from the English Channel, through the South Downs, and flood the area. However, when he started digging, he threw up huge lumps of earth, each of which became a local landmark — such as Chanctonbury Ring, Cissbury Ring, Mount Caburn and Rackham Hill. He got as far as the village of Poynings (also known as the Devil’s Dyke) when he heard a cock crowing. Assuming that dawn was about to break, he leapt into Surrey, creating the Devil’s Punch Bowl where he landed. 5) Did you know the soil in the Devil’s Punch Bowl has two layers? The soil within the Devil’s Punch Bowl includes an upper layer of sandstone, with clay beneath. The two layers has been formed from erosion caused by spring water beneath the sandstone, causing the upper level to collapse.

Hope for Homes for Children thanks to Aldro

Aldro community giving Miss Emily Prince the charity cheque

During the past twelve months the Aldro community has worked tirelessly to raise the maximum amount of money to help their nominated charity for the year, Hope for Homes for Children. The money was raised from a wide range of activities organised by the boys in the school, These have included chess events and a Come

Dine with Me evening. In a school assembly Aldro handed over the record breaking £18,203.89 to Miss Emily Prince, who is in charge of community fundraising. She thanked the Aldro community for all its support and highlighted some of the charities achievements in 2012. Headmaster, Mr David Aston said, “I am delighted that the Aldro community has been able to raise this sum of money for Hope for Homes for Children and am really pleased that it will have a very positive impact on the vitally important work that the charity does. It is also incredibly valuable for our boys to have understood that there are many children of their age who have serious needs and difficulties and that charities like Hope for Homes for Children really help.” Aldro Preparatory School for boys, 01483 81 02 66

Bedales school gets creative Bedales Prep, Dunhurst, has launched an exhibition at the Bedales Gallery showcasing talent across the school community. The unique exhibition features art, textiles, ceramics and design work by pupils, teachers and support staff. Highlights of the exhibition include ‘The Big Draw’ showing portraits created by all the school, such as cleaning staff, cooks, teaching and support staff as well as pupils. The school participates in this annual event, now registered with the National Campaign for Drawing, to provide the opportunity for everyone who works or studies at Dunhurst to try their hand at drawing with the aim of dispelling the myth “I can’t draw”. The pictures spread the length of the gallery and it was through this exercise that Elaine Hewitt, Dunhurst’s Head of Creative Studies, discovered the hidden artistic talents of members of the support staff including Cassandra Crook a cleaner at Dunhurst and Garath Tulett a carpenter in the school’s facilities department. Gareth painted a portrait of his father-in-law as a 60th birthday present and Elaine thought the painting was worthy of a place in the exhibition. Cassandra’s art-work was inspired through ‘The Big Draw’ project. The last time Cassandra had painted was when she was at school so she was delighted that her talents were recognised in the exhibition. Bedales Prep, Dunhurst , 01730 300100 24

Flash the cat - taken by Bohemia Photographic

Flash’s (AKA Barley) story

Cat companions The 1 April – 6 May will see our nation of pet lovers join together to celebrate National Pet Month. With an aim to encourage responsible pet ownership, every year the event has a different theme. This year the event is keen to promote the message “Your pets and you: companions for life.” This in mind we’ve been talking to Haslemere Cats’ Protection, an organisation that knows all too well about the lifelong commitment of pets

Life in Haslemere

Based at Upper Hammer Lane Nr Woolmer Hill, The Haslemere Adoption Centre gives much needed homes to cats without a place to go. Helping to re-home cats from other CP centres; other feline rescue organisations and the general public, potential adopters are always in high demand. In an attempt to help reduce the large number of unwanted cats without a home the Haslemere Cats’ Protection are strong advocates of neutering. Cats’ Protection particularly supports early neutering of kittens before they reach puberty, between the ages of four to six months. The centre explains, “We are in consultation with our Veterinary Practice neuters Kittens at the age of ten weeks, which is one week after their first vaccination. Neutering at this age is safe and ethical and allows all Haslemere Centre cats and kittens to be neutered before being re-homed.” Cats’ Protection further supports feline neutering by granting financial assistance, donating £20 towards domestic male cats’ neutering, £26 towards females and the entire cost of feral cats.

Here we hear from one of the many lucky cats Haslemere Cats’ Protection have re-homed. Flash came to Haslemere when his previous owners had to move from their home. A lovely, lively, handsome boy with medium length fur, Flash was always very playful and absolutely loved his cuddles. Flash was noted to have a minor dental problem, but this was successfully treated with an appropriate dry food.

Flash at Home – as told by his new owners We just thought that it would be good to update you on Flash, who has been a member of our family for just a few weeks. Flash (now called Barley) is settling in extremely well. He spent his first few days hidden in a corner of the room we set up for him, presumably petrified of Moose, our Portuguese water dog.

Flash Cat and Moose Dog By the one-week mark, Flash was obviously very comfortable. He could be found wandering around the house with ease, sleeping on windowsills, sleeping on the kitchen table, sleeping on our bed, and swatting happily at the dog. Flash enjoys his morning ritual of breakfast, a two-hour meander around our garden, and a nice morning nap on a kitchen chair. He and Moose have entered into what i think will be a firm friendship. One morning last week, I found them curled up together on our bed, happy and comfortable as can be. Moose has obviously already benefitted (he seems to quite appreciate the presence of another animal) and we are enjoying his company as well. I even woke up a few nights ago with a little Flash-Hat in the middle of the night. He is very cuddly I think you will recall. At the moment, Flash is paying careful attention to the France/Spain match. We think he is a France fan, as he currently looks very unimpressed. Thanks so much for taking care of our little friend until we could bring him into our family. We are very pleased to have our little guy around. This year sees the Haslemere Educational Museum celebrate its 125th anniversary. Letting people know of our situation and explaining the benefit of the Museum’s facilities, events and educational programme, life long learning and fun.” The museum hopes the project will create a fund of at least one million pounds to help pay for the running costs of the establishment. The project is essential for the museum’s survival, as it doesn’t receive any government funding. Trustees and staff are appealing to benefactors to step forward and help preserve the museum and its collections for future generations. Museum fact file 1888 Museum was created by Sir Jonathan Hutchinson as a private museum in his garden barn based around botany, geology and social history. 1895 Museum relocated to larger premises due to the popularity of the museum and Hutchinson’s lectures. 1898 A Museum Examination was established for local children to encourage observation, reading and discussion. 1926 Museum moved to its current location at the end of the High Street. During the World Wars the museum experienced high levels of visitors - a lot of whom were soldiers. 1897-1948 Museum developed a lot of its character as a result of curator Mr E.W Swanton, introduction living specimens and scientific research. 1949 Arthur Jewell came to Haslemere Museum as Assistant Curator to John Clegg. He went on to become curator and he continued a tradition of pioneering educational work. 1951 A School Loan Service was introduced to allow schools to borrow duplicate items from the museum - This is still practiced today. The beach huts are a fun introduction to the work of the artists and from seeing the complete Exhibition, the viewer may be able to guess whose work it is.” Artists participating in the exhibition include Jan Scott, Rachel Vitolo, Diana Hammaren, Doreen Antill, Sheila Curling, Kitty Heywood, Christine Thomas and Sharon Anderson. Beauty in the ordinary and Cornish history at McAllister Thomas Fine Art McAllister Thomas is all set to present two new exhibitions. From the 12 April – 1 May the gallery will exhibit Angela Findlay, Fragments of Time. Angela’s work reflects the idea that places, buildings and objects bear witness to, reveal and hold the memory of human stories omitted by history’s grander narrative. Her paintings and collages look at incidental domestic situations, so familiar yet usually deemed unworthy of attention. Gallery Director, Gary Thomas explains, “Everyday items and scenes become stolen glimpses into the shadows of private or personal lives

and it is this inherent sense of tension that brings her thought provoking work alive.” The 3 – 22 May then sees the gallery present, Gordon Couch, Oyster Punts and Crabbers. This exhibition by Gordon Couch, an ex boat builder, features an engaging collection of paintings on ‘historic timbers’ from either old Cornish Crabbers or an old Oyster Punt used by Gordon’s family to harvest oysters using hand dredges on the River Fal – bringing everything together that is typically Cornish. Local artists brave the cold Despite the snow and freezing temperatures this year, brave models and artists have continued to meet at The Drawing Room. Local artists, Alison Orchard and Nicky Chubb, founded the Drawing Room at Hindhead Scout Hut three years ago, as a creative base for local artists. The group now runs life drawing workshops on Tuesday evenings and a lively mixed media group on Friday mornings. Alison Orchard explains, “We have such a fantastic varied group of artists and beginners who come each week; the different themes and interesting models are a real inspiration.” Both Alison and Nicky will hold an exhibition of their paintings, as part of the Surrey Artist Open Studios, in June. Joining them is the International children’s book illustrator, Elena Gomez, who will be exhibiting her silkscreen prints. Alison Orchard, www.alisonorchard.com

Anniversary Celebrations at Moorlands Lodge The team at Moorlands Lodge celebrated their first anniversary with residents and friends in February, and the very first resident Rita Clutterbuck shared the honours of cutting the birthday cake with General Manager Creenagh Williamson. Another guest wishing the Moorlands Lodge team happy birthday was the Rt Honourable Jeremy Hunt. He was given a guided tour by Creenagh and spent time chatting to the residents and staff. Jeremy said “Moorlands Lodge is an excellent example of future care in this country. This is what care should look like, I haven’t quite booked myself in yet, but I’d be more than happy to do so!” Moorlands Lodge is one of four homes

Care home gets local Residential care home, Wychwood House is focusing its efforts on serving the local community. The new local plans will see the care home expand its meals on wheels service to elderly residents in Grayshott and its surrounding area. Wychwood manager, Minaz Lalani, has found that there is a need for tasty, hot meals to be delivered to people who don’t wish to, or are unable to cook for themselves. “From running a care home, we have learnt what type of food the elderly want. We provide tasty meals using top quality ingredients. We pay attention to overall nutrition and aim to make sure that the food is easy to eat and digest. The elderly find it harder to eat certain foods,” Minaz explains. “Our food is tasty and not an

Good gardening Local care home, Huntington House is planning to introduce a special garden for residents with dementia. Based on research that has shown the benefits of sensory gardens for sufferers of dementia, the team hope the garden will allow them to practice self-mapping and self-organising skills. The home’s focus on dementia care comes alongside the government’s recent, Challenge on Dementia campaign to encourage local councils to adapt public spaces. Huntington House co-director, Charlie Hoare explains, “This will encourage the integration of people living with dementia with the general public, not only beneficial for dementia care but also in raising awareness about mental health issues.” The dementia garden follows on from the success of the home’s ‘Knit & Natter’ circle, also designed to help people with dementia.

Reform brought forward Chancellor George Osborne has announced that the Government’s overhaul of the pension system and social care funding will be brought forward by a year. The new plans, which will see a flat-tier pension worth around £144 a week, will now begin in 2016. The reforms will also now include a cap on the amount older people pay for social care in England, reducing the funds from £75,000 to £72,000. The Chancellor hopes the reform will assist both the young and old. However, Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls argued the government was not doing enough to stimulate growth. The current full state pension stands at £107.45 a week, but this can be topped up to £142.70 with the means-tested pension credit, and a state second pension which is based on National Insurance contributions. All those eligible for the state pension before April 2016 will continue to receive their entitlement under the current system. However, for new pensioners, the second state pension will be abolished. Age UK Advice, 0800 169 6565 Issue 39 April / May 2013

Grayshott News

A whole lot of Grayshott history

Brian Tapp, Richard Peskett and Phil Bates of the Archive Group holding the original Fox & Pelican signs having just bought them from an auction house in Essex in April 2010.

This year sees the Grayshott Village Archive celebrate their tenth birthday. Set up to commemorate the centenary of Grayshott Parish Council and the opening of Grayshott Village Hall, the past ten years has seen the group identify a range of historical

records to preserve the heritage and history of Grayshott. Phil Bates the Archive Chairman said: “We have now got an impressive comprehensive record of early Village life and this task will be ongoing but we are now wanting to focus on later history from the thirties leading on to the present day.” To help with their continuing development, the archive are asking Grayshott residents to think about any materials they may have relating to past history. Phil continues, “ this could be photographs, letters or documents etc, we of course will take copies and return the originals.” The group are particularly interested in getting photos of the snowy winter of 1963 and the great storm of 1987, as well as any recollections residents may have of these dates. Once collated the archive hope to publish the information in a printed format to celebrate ten years of the archive. Phil Bates, 01428 606001

The second-longest running offBroadway show in history, by the time it closed, it had become an international phenomenon translated into at least 26 languages with more than 8,000 productions worldwide. The show will run from the 24-27 April with a 7.30pm start.

Your Set up is the foundation for Better Golf Liphook Golf Club

Liphook Golf Club’s team of experts are always on hand to help their new customers improve their game. Here we’ve been catching up with Ian Mowbray, PGA Advanced Professional from the club to find out his top tips for golf: Possibly the single most important factor to get right in golf, whether you are an experienced or a novice golfer is the set up or address position. As humans we are

great at compensating and two wrongs can often make a right, however with a poor set up you will be inconsistent, more susceptible to injury and unlikely to reach your potential as a golfer. Virtually all swing faults that occur can be directly traced back to the very beginning! The basics include:• Alignment – you must aim correctly where you want the ball to go. • Grip – the only contact you have with the club is through your hands. • Posture – will affect your balance and pivot. • Ball Position – will affect your quality and direction of strike. Take advice and the time to build the correct foundations to your swing to enable your golf to develop correctly. PGA Professionals are here to help you. Liphook Golf Club, 01428 723785
