On 16 May 2011, Grayshott resident, Alex Bolt lost his brave battle against cancer aged just 16. Alex was diagnosed with a brain tumour in March 2010 and from the outset fought the disease with outstanding courage and determination. Alex’s battle inspired his family to set up the Alex Bolt Fund, part of The Brain Tumour Charity. The trust raises funds for the Alex Bolt Foundation Research Facility at UCL, which seeks to determine the cause of brain tumours to try to find an effective treatment. Working with Uniq Physique gym the charity have organised the ‘Bolt for Bolty’ trail race to raise funds and awareness for the Alex Bolt Fund. Taking place on 14 September at 11am, the race is intended to be both challenging and fun for the local community. Rachael Elliot Hughes at Uniq Physique explains, “The five mile route, which starts and finishes at the gym, is mainly off road and involves both hills and woodland to keep the runners motivated.” After the run there will be a BBQ for participants to enjoy with friends and family. Well measured

Motivation station So it’s been over six months since you started (and failed) your New Year’s resolutions, bikini season is upon us and yet you still can’t find the will power to start that much needed health kick. Thankfully, the 1 July is National Motivation Day, so to celebrate we’ve been finding out about exercise inspiration and how to improve our get up and go Perfect planning

FitBiz Training, Personal Trainer, Heather Smith believes a key reason many people struggle with motivation is they don’t know what they want to achieve. Here she explains, “I firmly believe that if you know what you want AND why you want it everyone can keep their motivation to eat well and exercise all year round.” Heather

Life in Haslemere

LIH40_p10_Health.indd 10

recommends using an hour to write in excruciating detail what you want to achieve (“I want to lose 2” from my hips so my white shorts fit again” not “I want to lose weight”). Then explore your goal to discover why you want it. When you feel a bit uncomfortable, you’ve found your reason. Once you have done this you can make your plan. But remember set yourself up to succeed. It’s better to say you’ll do three workouts a week then overshoot and do four, than to say you’ll do four but only manage three. To ensure you stick to your new plan, Fitter by Far exercise expert, Andy Webb suggests using your phone or electronic diary to keep on schedule. “With a regular commitment you will definitely get more out of your exercise and see results.” Top tip: Plan a small treat or two each week – it allows you a sneaky glass of wine without feeling guilty. Then you can draw a line and move on.

Measuring how well you are doing and finding out exactly how your hard work is paying off is a fantastic way to keep you motivated. However, Personal Trainer, FrankieFit believes we shouldn’t always trust the scales. “Weighing scales are not entirely accurate or motivating as they don’t take into account water retention during the month, changes in muscle tone with muscle weighing more than fat... BUT measuring yourself with string around your chest, hips and waist is a great way to keep an eye accurately on your change in shape!” Top tip: Decide on a goal and then write it down. Evidence shows that you are far more likely to succeed if you do this.

Fun fitness

When it comes to exercise it is essential to do something you enjoy. Rachael at Uniq Physique explains, “You will not stick at something you loathe doing! If you really can’t stand the thought of exercise or diets, then why not enlist the help of a Personal Trainer - just to get you started. Once you start to see results, you will feel motivated to continue the journey alone.” FrankieFit also believes pleasure is crucial and suggests group classes as a way to have fun, make friends and improve your fitness. “We run ScrummyMummyFit for mums’ who want to bring their little one in a buggy, Bootcamps for Mums, Early Morning Circuits and a Family Fitness Fun Session on weekends for the whole family. These are all run in Haslemere and Grayswood in the great outdoors.” Top tip: Work with a buddy.Whether you want to join a gym, an exercise class, run, walk or just lose a few pounds, it is so much better to do it with a friend who can inspire and encourage you along the way.

national smile month

Smile! If your teeth are a mess, your smile will be too, so the British Dental Health Foundation is running National Smile Month to encourage everyone, particularly parents and children, to think about their oral health. And the nation’s kids definitely need to improve their dental hygiene, as around eight or nine children in every UK primary school class will have already developed tooth decay. That’s approaching a quarter of a million children in each primary school year, and around 3.3 million young people aged 0-14 years. To reduce those figures the annual National Smile Month campaign, which will see many dentists giving out smiley stickers and Smile-on-a-Sticks to patients, promotes three key messages. They are: :: Brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Children under seven should be supervised by a parent, and the recommended fluoride level in toothpaste for children up to three years old is 1,000 parts per million (ppm), and over three years it’s 1,350-1,500 fluoride ppm, which is the same as in adult toothpastes. However, the taste of adult toothpaste may be too strong for young children. :: Cut down on sugary foods and drinks. :: Visit the dentist regularly, as often as they recommend. NHS dental treatment is free for children up to the age of 18. Karen Coates, dental adviser at the British Dental Health Foundation, explains that www.lifemags.co.uk

LIH40_p13_nsm.indd 13

most dentists see children from around the age of two, generally every six months. “It’s basically counting the teeth at that stage, and making sure there aren’t any obvious problems in the mouth,” she says. “If you build it up from there, children don’t tend to have any issues about going to the dentist - it’s part of their routine.” She says as well as visiting the dentist regularly, parents need to watch what children eat.

National Smile Month is in full swing, taking place until the 20 June. Here, we find out how important it is for children to visit the dentist regularly, and how parents can encourage them to have good oral health for life. “It’s not the amount of sugar that people have, it’s the frequency that causes dental decay,” she says. “If children are eating and drinking sugary foods all day every day, then their teeth are under constant attack.” To reduce that attack, it’s better to give children snacks that have a neutral PH value, such as cheese, nuts and seeds, breadsticks, toast or crumpets, etc. And while fruit is great from a nutritional

point of view, it contains fruit sugars and is better as part of a meal. A particular fruit ‘tooth villain’ is dried fruit, as it’s very high in sugar and gets stuck in the grooves of the teeth. Similarly, fruit juice contains a lot of fruit sugar, so it’s best only with a meal. Milk or water are much better drinks for the teeth throughout the day. Another option is for children to drink juice through a straw, as the juice will be in less contact with the teeth. And while the temptation for parents might be to tell children to brush their teeth immediately after eating or drinking, this is not recommended by dental professionals. Coates explains that this is because saliva reduces the plaque acids produced when people eat or drink. It takes around an hour to do this. If you brush soon after eating, when the teeth are slightly demineralised, this can brush away minute particles of enamel, which can lead to a problem with erosion. The earlier people learn to look after their teeth, the better, as research also shows that people who learn good habits as children are far more likely to carry them into adulthood. Coates adds: “It’s about being aware, limiting the problems that can occur, and knowing if you can try to get children out of bad dental habits, it will make a big difference to their future dental health. “It’s vital to start good habits early, and we want to educate people about that, which is what National Smile Month’s all about.” www.nationalsmilemonth.org Life in Haslemere

Smile!

We are delighted to welcome Justin Toal as a partner at Stricklands. Justin practices dentistry emphasising on health and aesthetics. The whole body needs to be considered, not just the teeth and this is reflected in his approach to treatment planning and consultations. Justin qualified in Glasgow and has concentrated his training in cosmetic dentistry and advanced restorative work. He has been providing invisible orthodontic care for adults and facial aesthetic work, something the discerning patient needs in this modern era of ideal aesthetics. He takes great care to be gentle and ‘painfree’ is his aim in all aspects of the dental treatment. Justin enjoys playing football, has a background in rugby, which he follows keenly, reading and music – you will be asked what you would like to listen to during your dental appointment, especially longer treatment appointments, so have a think and be ready when asked! Justin is married to Sarah, they have a son, Noah, and are currently expecting their second child in the Summer. Justin Toal www.dentalfitnesscentre.co.uk

STRICKLANDS IMPLANT TEAM STATUS CELEBRATES

The international meeting on dental implant success rates, held in Manchester last week, confirmed the three main keys to successful implant placement to be: meticulous planning, the skills and experience of the individual operator and the reliability of the implant system used, proven by years of research and high quality control measures. The implant team at Stricklands are very pleased to have been awarded ‘Gold status’ by Straumann, one of the leading dental implant systems in the World. This was awarded for the number of successfully completed cases by the team and their long working relationship with the Swiss company. The highly experienced team at Stricklands includes two implantologists: Professor Piet Haers, the internationally recognised consultant maxillo-facial surgeon and

Darren Jones, awarded the Diploma in Implant Dentistry by the Royal College of Surgeons. Simon Allen and Colin Frazer have been restoring Straumann implants for over 12 years. Simon Allen says: ‘This type of treatment has revolutionised dentistry and changed people’s quality of life. Our patients no longer have to put up with loose dentures or gaps which can affect their smiles, chewing ability and self confidence.’ Colin adds: ’The response from patients who we treat has been incredibly positive. They are pleased with the outcomes, but often comment on how painless the experience has been. For our more nervous patients, the use of sedation has meant there are no barriers to implant work, removing stress and discomfort completely.’

experience at Stricklands enable us to carry out optimal treatment to achieve success for our patients.’ Other members of the implant team include: Naresh Hirani, gum expert with a special interest in generating healthy gums for implant sites, Debbie Davidson, sedationist, a 6-strong dedicated hygienist team, experienced surgical nurses, an implant treatment coordinator and two leading dental technicians. Justin Toal, partner, says: ’Implants are more routine treatment these days and the numbers placed are growing as friends and families pass on the good news. We are at the forefront of a real dental revolution and are working closely with Straumann to offer our patients the best.’

Darren says: ’Implant dentistry is very predictable over many years. Our training and

Classic meets contemporary

As we enter a new season, we’ve been learning about the latest interior trend ‘classic meets contemporary’ from Haslemere’s home experts Classic meets Contemporary Interior designer, Charlie Smith explains, “Interior design types fall under a variety of styles.

Contemporary Style This look is often defined by a minimalist style. Bright colours and light are often incorporated not just to give a modern sense of space, but also to make the area’s seem larger. Visually expanding small spaces is an irreplaceable trend in contemporary design. Furnishings and furniture are supposed to project clean and crisp outlines through their smooth lacquered finishes.

Classic Style Swedish Pappelina plastic rugs, £57 -£76, ScandiLiving Table lamp,£399, snuginteriors

Older days are reflected through classic style. Images of old homes come to mind when we think of this style. Conventional draperies, darker colours and bulkier furniture are what I call the ‘Trad Style’ Furniture pieces often have straight or curved lines, they feature smooth angles and gentle curves.” Charlotte at snuginteriors continues, “Classic meeting contemporary is all about ‘transitional’ style, allowing customers to seamlessly mix, and contrast, cherished old with eye-catching new, without necessarily having to take the full plunge and re-design the entire room. Many customers fear ‘modern’ as a stark and minimal style, but

it doesn’t need to be, it can be introduced through subtle design changes. “It is important to balance comfort and function. Look to retain character and warmth, whilst introducing reengineered classics; classics which have been redesigned using new materials and technologies to serve our contemporary needs.” Interior designer, Nadine Gilbert says a current trend that mixes both classic and contemporary is the industrial look. “Founder of Mulberry, Roger Saul and his son Freddie Saul have launched their own range of upcycled furniture combining the heritage of reused wood and teaming it welded steel for a contemporary aspect.” However, getting the look doesn’t have to be expensive. Nadine explains, “lots of

people end up with inherited pieces (not always with a commercial value!), and mixing them in to your home, along with your child-friendly sofa, is an art. Maybe get an old favourite chair re-upholsterd in a modern fabric, or paint an old chest of drawers in a modern vibrant shade.” Artisanti, 0845 259 1410, www.artisanti.com Charlie Smith Design, 07770568307 Nadine Gilbert 07860 373722 ScandiLiving, 01428 608050, www.scandiliving.com Snuginteriors, 01730894754, www.snug-interiors.com Then and Now Shop, 0845 388 9775, www.thenandnowshop.com

gardening

Here comes the

Summer Fingers crossed this should be the time of the year we want to be spending more time in our gardens. So to make sure it is a place we want to be gardening expert, Pippa Greenwood has been sharing her tips

Use a board or sieve to skim off and collect up duckweed as soon as it starts to appear on the surface of your pond. If there is a lot of it, then I find that a kitchen sieve works as a great duckweed scoop! It can safely be composted. Confessions of the father

father’s day

Peter Elliott-Hughes

Father’s Day is just around the corner and to celebrate we’ve been finding out where this daddy of holidays came from, hearing your fatherly confessions, as well some great things for dads to do in Haslemere. And of course we’ve got plenty of local gift ideas to make his day extra special

The biggest lie I’ve told my children is… For years, we changed our son’s Birthday by one day, just so that it fell within the school holidays! He’s 16 now and has worked it out! My favourite thing to do with the kids is… We all really enjoy the Haslemere cinema - it is great having it on our doorstep and the children love the ‘old fashioned’ interval! My fatherly advice would be… Work hard, play hard and be nice to people we all need help from others and you never know when this might be.

While many believe Father’s Day is a relatively modern American idea, the tradition can actually traced back to the ruins of Babylon. There, they have recorded that a young boy called Elmesu carved a

The best thing about being a dad is… Getting to play with the toys.

Father’s Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. The young boy Elmesu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life. What will you be writing in your Father’s Day card?

The one thing people don’t tell you about being a dad is… That moment when you see yourself looking back at you, trying to tell her off for doing exactly the same things you did when you were that age. My first thought when I found out I was going to be a dad was… Worry, closely followed by terror Thomas then more and worry. Matilda

There is often talk of coffee mornings and advice groups for mums, however where do the dads go with their parenting problems? Here we’ve been finding out about a couple of groups in Haslemere just for dads!

Unlike in the UK and America when Father’s Day is on the third Sunday in June, in Australia Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September In the UK 7 million Father’s Day cards are sent each year, compared to 13 million Mother’s Day cards

St Ives Dad’s breakfast and camp “We hold an annual Dad’s Breakfast. A very popular event which starts at 7am. Dads are treated to bacon butties in the canteen to breakfast with their daughters before they go to work. The girls also get the chance to show their dad around the school/classroom before school starts. It’s very popular and normally about 50 dads manage to make it to the event. Our other event is the Year5&6 Dad’s Camp Out

which takes place in June each year. This is also a very popular event where dads and daughters pitch their tents together in the school grounds and enjoy a BBQ and Games together followed by singing round the campfire. No Mums are allowed and they have to organise all the food themselves!”

“Aimed at dads, stepdads, granddads, uncles or any other male carer, Cooking with Dad started as a two year project in 2008, funded by the Big Lottery. Over the course of the project we engaged over 1,400 dads and children from Surrey and Hampshire in a range of fun and seasonal practical cookery workshops and longer courses. Following the success of the project, we were invited to apply for further funding to continue and expand the programme. The first Cooking with Dad of activities proved hugely popular, with many dads

and children going to attend other family learning opportunities in their local communities, such as Fairytale Feasts, Cooking for Baby and parenting courses. The project could not have been such a success without the ongoing support of local children’s centres, schools and libraries, who provided venues, endless enthusiasm and worked in partnership to recruit dads and other male carers.” The Organic Cookery School Cooking with Dad project, 01428 787594

The hunt for

summer fun After a long and dreary winter we’ve finally got something to get excited about as we enter the British summer Season. A popular tradition for over 300 years, The Season originally ran from Easter to mid August, when Grouse shooting began to keep the aristocracy entertained. To get in the seasonal mood we’ve been finding out some exciting events coming up not to be missed

The one time of the year we all come together as a nation of tennis enthusiasts, Wimbledon is as famous for its strawberries and unreliable weather as it is for its worldclass sport. For visitors that haven’t been allocated tickets in its annual ballot there are 500 available for Centre Court in the first nine days and 500 for courts One and Two online from 8pm the day before. And for the happy campers there is always the option of the renowned Wimbledon queue. www.wimbledon.com

Goodwood, 12 – 14 July Every summer Goodwood is the home of three popular events. First of the three is the Festival of Speed. Taking place from the 12 - 14 July the Festival is the largest motoring garden party in the world. This fun summer Goodwood Festival of Speed, taken by Marcus Dodridge

weekend brings together an impossibly heady mix of cars, stars and motor sport ‘royalty’ to create the largest car culture event in the world. This year the Festival will celebrate the best of the first 20 years of the event, focusing on highlights from the Festival’s history, including the biggest, best, fastest, loudest and most outrageous vehicles of all time. The Fesitval of Speed will be followed by Goodwood’s horse racing extravaganza, Glorious Goodwood running from 30 July – 3 August and events will be concluded with a step back in time at the Goodwood Revival from 13 – 15 September. www.goodwood.com

Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup, 21 July 17 teams have entered this year’s Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship at Cowdray Park, Midhurst. 50 matches will be played during the course of the tournament, which opens on 25 June and culminates in the Final on 21 July. Most of the world’s leading players will be seen in action on the famous Cowdray turf, and the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup is the trophy, which every player wants to win during his career. The late John Cowdray, 3rd Viscount, launched the world famous Gold Cup in 1956 and with the support of leading champagne house Veuve Clicquot since 1995, the Final has become one of the most 26

exciting and stylish occasions in the English sporting calendar. Highlights of this year’s tournament include the Midhurst Town Cup, which will be played between two local Gold Cup teams on Sunday 30 June, and the following weekend, on Sunday 7 July, two teams will contest the Argentine Ambassadors Cup. The Quarter Finals weekend over 13/14 July sees the action hot up to be followed by the hard-fought Semi Finals on Thursday 18 July – which polo insiders consider the best day of polo in the whole year. www.cowdraypolo.co.uk

Chicken Pie, Haslemere U3A Men’s Cooking Group

We all know that for most the kitchen is mum’s domain, however as we get set to celebrate Father’s Day we thought we’d find out more about a special group encouraging Haslemere men to get in the kitchen The U3A Men’s Cooking Group are a unique self-help group for men who enjoy eating and drinking. Mike Pugh of the U3A Men’s Cooking Group explains, “we meet up twice a month in Haslemere Hall on a Monday morning. We take it in turn to devise a twocourse meal and provide the ingredients, which the rest of the group prepare and cook. We all then enjoy the results of our efforts, washed down with a glass or two of wine.” Here they shared two of their delicious recipes for us to try for ourselves at home:

Chicken Pie with Petit Pois & Sweet Carrot Smash

Drunken plums with Barbados cream (Serves 4)

(Serves 6) INGREDIENTS Chicken Pie • 4 x 180g skinless chicken breasts • A knob of butter • A bunch of spring onions • 150g button mushrooms • 1 heaped tablespoon plain flour, (plus extra for dusting) • 2 teaspoons English Mustard • 1 heaped tablespoon crème fraiche • 300ml chicken stock • A few sprigs of fresh thyme • 1/3 of a nutmeg, for grating • 1 sheet of pre-rolled puff pastry • 1 egg ACOMPANIMENTS Carrot Smash Petit Pois PREPARATION Turn on oven and set for 200 deg C. Slice chicken into 1cm strips. Trim spring onions and cut into small pieces. Wash and cut mushrooms into small pieces. Prepare 300ml of chicken stock. Beat the egg for brushing on to the pastry.

COOKING Put a lug of olive oil and a knob of butter into a hot, large, wide pan. Add the chicken and cook for about 3 minutes or so. Add to the pan, the spring onions, the mushrooms, the flour and stir. Add the mustard, the crème fraiche, the chicken stock and stir well. Add the thyme leaves, few gratings of nutmeg, a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir and leave to simmer. Meanwhile, unroll the puff pastry on a dusted clean surface and if necessary roll it out to ensure it is large enough to cover the ovenproof dish selected. Then lightly score the pastry with a sharp knife. Transfer the pan of chicken to an ovenproof dish. Cover the filling with the pastry (tucking it in at the edges) and brush the pastry with the beaten egg. Put into the oven for about 15 minutes or until golden and serve with accompaniments.

INGREDIENTS • 500g (1lb) large plums • 3 tablespoons clear honey • 3 tablespoons port • Barbados cream • 284ml double cream • 300g Greek yoghurt • 75g/3oz brown sugar (Demerara or soft brown) PREPARATION Make a slit in the side of each plum along the natural division of the fruit. Place in an ovenproof dish and drizzle over the honey. Pour over the port, cover and cook in a preheated oven, 1700C/3250F/gas Mark 3, for 30-40 minutes, depending on the ripeness of the fruit. Serve with Barbados cream. Barbados cream Beat cream and yoghurt together until fairly thick but not too stiff. Pour into bowl and sprinkle the sugar over in a thick carpet, cover with cling film and leave in the fridge for 12-24 hours.

Animagination As part of West Dean College’s Fusion Weekend of Creativity, local animator, Will Bishops-Stephens will be holding a special motion course, teaching both children and adults about movement, characters and stories. So to get us all set and animated, Will’s been giving us picture of his creative world When I was growing up... I was a massive TV addict, so I watched everything. Some great British ones- Danger Mouse, Count Duckula and Banana Man. Anything from Warner Bros, I was antiDisney for some reason. Dungeons & Dragons, The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse and The Moomins, a very quiet animation made with fuzzy felt, had a big impact on me. If I was an animated character I’d be... Stressed Eric or a similar character called Duckman, a neurotic ranting duck. Outside

Work by Will Bishop-Stephens

I am very calm though, something like Bagpuss. My favourite ever animated film... Was Hilary by Antony Hodgson, then it was Hill Farm by Mark Baker who went on to make Peppa Pig, today I think it’s The Big Snit by Richard Condie. There are more poetic films but The Big Snit is warm and funny as well as sad. Animation is better because... It creates a world where even inanimate objects can have interior lives. Following last year’s popular Tudor evening, Jeanne Dolmetsch is returning to the Haslemere Hall. On Saturday 8 June at 6pm she will present Sunshine and Shadow, an audio-visual entertainment recreating the atmosphere of Louis XIV’s court at Versailles through words, letters, paintings and the music of his favourite composers - Lully, Delalande, Couperin, Marais and Hotteterre. Jeanne hopes “the evocative tone colours of theorbo, bass viol, violin, harpsichord, oboe and recorder” will transport audiences to the “King’s lever and coucher, the Ceremonial Supper and Grande Chapelle, the theatre, opera, ballet and la petite musique.” She explains, “For Le Roi Soleil, music was both an entertainment and a solace, just as it is for us today.”

A taste of

in Haslemere Guilt and Grief, British Short Film made within Haslemere

Messing around with cheap video cameras and watching lots of films, Tom has always had a passion for filmmaking. “I really enjoy the majority of filmmaking. As a film maker you have to be able to do a variety of completely unrelated thingswithout enjoying it you wouldn’t get through it.” But, it was when he began creating short film, Guilt & Grief and met lead actor, Stuart Adams that he began to take his hobby more seriously. “All I had was a handwritten piece of paper with some vague ideas written on it. These ideas were just images. A month or two later and we were shooting- the combination of pressure, time and people really moved me to act and get things done.” Filmed in locations across Haslemere, including Bramdean House, Guilt & Grief tells the story of Simeon, a young man who, after years of being tortured by guilt and grief because of a horrible crime he Filming Guilt and Grief

As you know we think there is a lot of life in Haslemere. However, local film maker Tom Van Den Broek, recently took on the challenge of telling a story of guilt and grief in Haslemere with his new 15 minute short film committed, finally kills himself and dies alone in his bed. After his death, Simeon is transported to the garden of “Jannah”, where he meets his family again, as well as the woman he killed. Past, present and future keep alternating, with jealousy, disappointment and rage serving as the eternal backdrop from which Simeon cannot escape. Taking influences from British director Christopher Nolan (known for films such as the Prestige, Batman and Inception) Guilt and Grief uses a non-standard structure, allowing the viewers to piece the film together themselves. “Through a non-linear narrative we build a picture slowly of what actually happened – though there is no definitive answer given in the film – the audience are asked to think and work out the sequence of events.” Unfortunately, unlike Christopher Nolan, Tom didn’t have the luxury of a Hollywood style budget and it was this that he found most challenging when making the film. “We shot an epic-scale period drama on location with next to no money. It was only possible due to the immense kindness, favours, good will and good luck; the film gods were smiling. We hung by a thread the whole time- if the weather was bad, we were ruined. If the equipment malfunctioned, we were ruined. If someone didn’t turn up, we were ruined. Somehow it turned out OK.” Many actually thought the film turned

out better than ‘ok’ with the film receiving a range of positive reviews. “We got our first independent review just before Xmas 2012, and it Tom Van Den Broek, couldn’t have Guilt and Grief director been better. That was shortly followed by a swathe of excellent reviews- cast/crew couldn’t believe it.“ Most recently the film has been seen by industry experts at BFI London, Shorts International and independent BAFTA producers, who have all expressed an interest in the film and Tom’s next project, a feature film with the Shakespeare Film Festival. The Queens World Film Festival New York saw the film nominated for best narrative short and the Limelight Film Awards has selected the film. “The film will also be at Cannes this year, where I and some of the team are hoping to get further interest from foreign markets.” If you are interested in seeing the film visit www.ofguiltandgrief.com for details of screenings and news on its release.

Guidance from Godalming College

Royal School leads the right way

Godalming College is opening its doors for young people and their parents, who are considering the College for entry in September 2014, on 10 July from 4pm – 8.30pm. All teaching staff will be on hand to discuss courses and current students and senior managers will be available to discuss life at college, enrichment, the tutorial programme and transport. Specialists such as learning support tutors and careers advisers will also be available to offer valuable individual advice and guidance. This year Godalming College were pleased to receive an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted report in all areas, as well as consistently high exam results, both for academic and vocational courses, with over 36% of students gaining an A* or A grade in their A levels last year and 66% of BTEC level 3 students gaining a Distinction* or Distinction.

Royal School pupil, Isabel Watkins recently came runner up in a Young Human Rights competition. Sponsored by The Guardian News, SecEd and Amnesty International, there were three categories where young people were encouraged to either write an article about a human rights issue, become a photojournalist and create a visual image of a human rights concern or write a protest song. Over 2500 people from the ages of 7 -18 took part from all over the country. As part of the competition Isabel visited the Guardian News offices and created the front page of a newspaper with her photo on it. Isabel then went on to the Amnesty International offices where the awards ceremony was held. Alice Reynolds from The Royal School, a winner from last year, was also asked to present an award.

An education in energy efficiency Highfield and Brookham Schools have recently invested in Biomass energy with a woodchip burning heating system. The new sustainable system was introduced to utilise the woodland on the school’s estate to produce energy and heat the school. “Before the new installation, the schools consumed an astounding 140,000 litres of oil a year. With the installation of the new woodchip burner, we are making an instant saving on oil consumption, which can now be re-invested in many other areas of the schools” says Paul Harris, Estate & Facilities Manager. “In addition we are also able to benefit from the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme which encourages the installation of renewable heat technology with financial incentives.” The woodchip burning heating system is considered to be carbon neutral as trees take carbon out of the atmosphere as they grow, which is replaced in the atmosphere as they are burnt, so there is no increase in atmospheric Co2 levels. The system is sustainable as the woodchip used for burning is derived from Chestnut coppicing on the Highfield and Brookham estate. Highfield and Brookham Schools, 01428 728000 34

Valerie Hale partner Safe Harbour Homecare

New tide of training After four months in business, Safe Harbour Homecare Ltd is pleased to see the difference they are making on people’s lives. Launched in Liphook by Valerie Hale and Carloline Williams, the pair set up the company with the ambition to provide structured training, covering common induction standards and ongoing continual professional development for care staff. Both Valerie and Caroline have been outstanded by the positive feedback they have received on their services, including a

letter from a daughter of one of the clients they had helped reading, “They are without doubt, the best home care company we have ever used and I cannot stress enough how grateful we are to them for their excellent service.” Talking about the company Director, Valerie Hale said, “Caring is in our nature, we are passionate about safeguarding the rights of vulnerable adults to remain in their own home for as long as possible.” Safe Harbour Homecare Ltd, 01428 722086

Next spring a range of new measures will be introduced to provide better, more personal, integrated and compassionate care for older vulnerable people. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said that the proposals will be announced in the autumn ahead of their April implementation date. The new plans will look at the way hospitals are established to support frail and older people in emergencies, with a particular focus on dementia. The role of GPs in supporting vulnerable older people and the barriers preventing people getting joined-up care will also be examined. Mr Hunt warned the Commons during the Queen’s Speech debate that the reforms will require a ‘great deal of careful work asking some difficult questions and making some tough decisions’. But he added: ‘If it leads to more personal care, more integrated and more compassionate care, then it stands alongside the care bill as an important step forward in reforming the care received by millions of people.’ Age UK, www.ageuk.org.uk

writer and entertainer in his own right and, along with other members of his own family, he will be singing classic songs we all know and love as well as telling stories of his interesting life in the world of show business. Born in London in 1947, Anthony first appeared alongside his father, Max Bygraves, at just four years of age, in a pantomime at the London Palladium. He then appeared in the film Charlie Moon at the age of seven and continued through his early years in numerous television shows. After leaving school he set up a theatre company and worked as an actor in performances from Shakespeare to stand up. Anthony supports various charities including ‘Singing for the Brain’ and the Alzheimer’s Society, which is also Moorlands Lodge’s chosen charity for 2013. All guests to the event will be asked to make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society and there will also be a raffle during the afternoon.

On Friday 21 June, Huntington House Nursing Home will open their doors to local communities for The National Care Home Open Day. The annual event was set up with the ambition to change long-held perceptions of care homes and build new friendships. Planning for the day, Huntington House Nursing Home are particularly looking forward to celebrating their connection with local communities in and around Hindhead, whose families they have been looking after for the last 35 years. Charlie Hoare explains, “we have gained a reputation not just for excellent care but also for providing a fun and inspiring lifestyle for our residents.” This message of inspiration was shared at the home’s recent mini recruitment fair ahead of opening Langham Court, their new dementia home. “The general feeling amongst attendees after walking around the development, despite still being under construction, was one of inspiration. All ten of them left with an application pack and a smile on their face!”

Chamber Gala Dinner

is a winner!

This year saw Haslemere Hall play host to the Haslemere Chamber of Commerce’s annual Gala Dinner and Business Awards Chamber members and their guests were greeted with a glass of bubbly accompanied by canapés before sitting down to a three course dinner prepared by three different local caterers - Cruickshanks, Sophie Martin Catering and Mirabelles. During the meal, diners were treated to entertainment from singer Jess McCluskey and the classical genius of Hurtcore.

The Hall was given a complete makeover by Wey Hill’s interior design shop, The Silk Road, sticking to a Victoriana theme with a Twist as a salute to the Hall’s Centenary. The awards also saw the launch of the Chamber’s new website by Mzuri Design, followed by new Chamber President, John Orr announcing the winners of the 2013 business awards. Guests then enjoyed dancing until midnight with disco music provided by Twilight Entertainments.

Turning shoes into success VARCA factory

Local business woman, Marianne Pope was inspired to start her unique sandal business, VARCA following endless compliments from friends about her beautiful, handmade Menorcan sandals. 14 years on, the collection now includes the original ‘abarcas’ plus high fashion espadrille wedges and soft Italian suede loafers. Available in a plethora of beautiful summer colours as well as metallics and

animal prints. Marianne explains, “VARCA designs incorporate classic style with practical comfort using a signature heel strap that stays in place. Renowned for their comfort, these sandals are still worn throughout Spain by men, women and children of all ages including the Spanish Royal family, Rafael Nadal and Penelope Cruz.” Known in Spain as abarcas, the sandals were originally made for farmers and fishermen from pieces of pigskin sewn onto disused tyre soles. “VARCA sandals are still produced by a family business in a small Menorcan village and hand-finished by craftsmen to the highest quality in beautiful coloured leathers and nubucks.”

Apprentice candidate bounces from the boardroom to his burrito business

Tim Stillwell on The Apprentice

Haslemere puts their best foot forward at industry awards

Former Haslemere resident, Tim Stillwell made it through stiff competition to appear on BBC reality TV show, The Apprentice. Unfortunately, the candidate’s journey came to an end when he was tasked with creating and selling a flavoured beer. Tim’s team lost by making the least profit after choosing to sell their product at a local beer festival which turned out to be a small pub garden. However, Tim is bouncing back from the show, with plans to bring his unique burrito business, Burrito Kitchen to Surrey.

Chris Gorrod, Melanie Hardingham and Jameela Jamil

“Burrito Kitchen offer fresh, healthy Mexican food,” Tim explains. “ We’ve just launched our first permanent unit in Westfield, Merry Hill and are currently planning to expand in Surrey.” First launched in a mobile catering trailer situated on the University of Birmingham campus, Tim started Burrito Kitchen in his final year of university after spending time in Mexico. New plans to bring safer walking to Woolmer Hill Last summer we spoke to Cllr Ferris Cowper about the walking route to Woolmer Hill School from Hindhead and Grayshott and its surrounding dangers. As Ferris celebrates another re-election we’ve been finding out about his continuing plans improve the route. “I am trying hard to get people to agree that a gravel-surfaced, shallow dug footpath which would make these children’s journey a little safer.” Cllr. Cowper explains, “So far, nearly six months has been spent working with residents, the Ministry of Defence and Surrey CC, all landowners in the area of this road, to try and get a small stretch of land agreed where the footpath can be built. Hampshire CC will do this and take all of the costs. They will even reimburse residents for the loss of trees.” Most recently Cllr Feris Cowper has also been pleased to receive a supportive note from Surrey County Councillor Nikki Barton. Cllr Barton told Life in Haslemere, “I am planning to meet with Ferris and will give all the support I can to the initiative as I fully support any projects that make it safer for our children to walk to school.” Cllr Ferris Cowper, 01428 609858
