Tidings of comfort and joy

A

s the Christmas season sweeps in for 2009, this issue of Life in Haslemere offers a tempting menu of contents to get you all in a festive mood. Whether the recession is really over, as some pundits and experts assure us it is, may be a moot point, but there are far more reasons to feel cheerful and comfortable than there were at this time last year. At this time of year the award-winning Haslemere Rewards Scheme offers special benefits for holders of their loyalty cards. On the cover you will find a sample loyalty card which you can redeem for a real one at half price at any participating local retailer. How shoppers can benefit, and the list of participating shops, are mapped out in the centre pages of the magazine. We are grateful to the rewards scheme committee for their tireless efforts in facilitating this promotion. There are two forays into fashion: the styles, colours and fabrics available from the local retailers; and also highlights of the Haslemere fashion show in November. And it wouldn’t be Christmas (oh, yes it would, I hear you cry) without seasonal shows, from the Haslemere Thespians, Opera South and the Chichester Festival Theatre. This issue also includes a local shopping guide for the festive season, and favourite winter travel destinations chosen by local people. You can expect plenty of winter warmers in this edition. Life in Haslemere would like to wish a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year to all its readers, advertisers, distributors, friends and supporters.

H

aslemere Travel has won third place (Highly Commended) in the prestigious British Travel Awards’ Small Travel Retailer of the Year category. This was the first time Haslemere Travel has entered the awards, which were created to reward the best companies in travel. Managing Director, Gemma Antrobus, said: “We couldn’t be happier to win this award and we thank everyone who voted for us. It’s such a major achievement and even better because votes are cast by the public. Next year we’ll be going for gold!” Recognized by consumers and travel professionals, they are the “Oscars” of the travel industry and the best arbiter of public opinion, as the largest awards programme in the UK, with more than 90,000 votes cast in 2009. he South Downs became England’s 9th and the United Kingdom’s 14th National Park on 12 November. The new park will be created on 1 April 2010. The boundaries include all the six proposed additional areas which were under consultation during the summer: Alice Holt Forest, Titnore Woods and Castle Goring, Land at Plumpton / East Chiltington, Patcham Recreation Ground (Brighton), Land at Roedean Crescent (Brighton) and the A27 embankments. It also includes all of Green Ridge (Brighton) and the whole of the village of Offham.

The South Downs Campaign (SDC), a network of around 160 organizations, wants to see swift action to ensure that the new National Park Authority is given all the help that it needs to make it a success. Margaret Paren, of the Campaign to Protect Rural England and vice-chair of SDC,

he A3 Hindhead project has advanced significantly, according to the contractors Balfour Beatty. “The tunnel is still on schedule for a summer 2011 opening and work is on budget,” a spokesperson told Life in Haslemere. “The project is really taking shape with signs of progress becoming more visible: the route of the new A3 is now apparent and the tunnel remains a hive of activity. In 2010 large areas of the new road will be open to traffic and the tunnel will be kitted out with state-of-theart mechanical and electrical equipment.” Both tunnels have been been

waterproofed and will have a concrete secondary lining by the end of the year; earthworks through the northbound tunnel and the excavation of Hazel Grove cutting are finished; and the southbound carriageway between Hazel Grove and The Spaniard will open soon. Local boutiques give the exclusive lowdown to Life in Haslemere on this winter’s top colours, fabrics and styles. By Camilla Marchi and Elisa Franzoi

Clothes and shoes

The October opening of a Quilted handbag new clothes department from Luigi next door to thier shoe shop in Haslemere High Street has proved a great success for Luigi. Combining clothes with the shoes seems to complement the shop’s ambience. £250.00 Luigi offers a mix of labels and prices in classically modern style to suit everyone. Julie sells brands such as Oui, Lulu Guinness and Nougat among others. The shop is the only one in UK which stocks Monika Varga directly from Milan; you can also find the Querky handbags, with a cat as their logo; all are single pieces you can not get anywhere else. The most popular materials this season are jersey, viscose and fluid fabric; the Charli range is in line with this, offering floaty items which can be worn both with heels and boots. The new fashion aims to be suitable for women, who want to combine comfort and glamor with practicality.

Have a look at the gorgeous cardigans in the store; they look just as fabulous over a pair of jeans as they do worn over leggings and winter boots. And if you are seeking a sophisticated style she also recommends chiffon, sparkling satin mix and laced dresses finished off with black high heels. It is the perfect choice for an unforgettable night out! 6

In the purple

Purple, navy blue and black are the most popular colours this season and that includes Christmas parties. At Blush Lindsey has got an exciting stock of ladies wear. The chic and refined velvet trousers, wide and long to the floor, are perfect to wear in the evening for a very comfortable yet smart look. And to overcome the cold you can feel warmer wearing knit cardigans and dresses, such as the long grey number with the gloves to match. Finally if you want to stand out from the crowd, the

Nearby, Noggs has a wide selection of ladies’ fashion and accessories. Again the most popular colours are all the nuances of purple, plum and violet. “This winter the look is very comfortable, easy to wear,” says the proprietor Nina Faulkner. In the store a wide range of labels is on offer: Yumi for jumpers, Komodo for casual and formal wear and, last but not least, the wonderful designs by Monica Boxley. This British brand has many remarkable items this year, such as the refined vintage

Nina also has a selection of wonderful necklaces, earrings and jewellery. Moreover she is selling a charming range of clothes by Giggle. The great thing about this FairTrade label is that all the clothing is made of organic cotton so it doesn’t affect the environment.

Sparkly details

Jeanne Stamp, the owner of Second Thoughts, suggests: “The best colour is what suits the individual person, if you look better in blue, then wear blue”. It is good to be at ease with one’s favourite colour and to be glamorous at the same time. Second Thoughts offer a wide range of evening and party dresses in many different colours. Everything has sparkly details this winter, especially for the Christmas season. You can find a traditional black dress or, better, a deep green one if you want to stand out from the crowd. You can choose one of the many single pieces if you want to be enchanting and eye-catching at parties this Christmas. Stylish hats can be combined with your chosen dress for a day at the races or for the mother of the bride.

Mix and match

You can find lots to mix and match for any occasion at have2haveit, a new shop in West Street. All the items are easy to wear and they can be worn either with jeans and a belt or leggings and boots. Grey is the shop’s key-colour and carbon shades suit everyone. For your evenings out, you can choose black or navy-blue tops with sequins or with little studs for a cheeky rock look. Northland and eseOese, from Spain, are the main brands. Cashmere scarves and knitted cardigans from Ochre, in charming soft colours, are also available to suit wahtever you are wearing. The Drift handbags from Aberdeen, are made with real soft leather and they start from the reasonable price of £36. Every woman knows accessories are important, they really make the difference; and in have2haveit you can find the right finishing touches for your dress, for example a silver or gold necklace from £22. Top tips to stay trim Alcohol can overload your body at Christmas

Stay on track with your levels of fitness, weight and stress through the festive season

1 Heather Gillam

2. Samantha Hardwick

• Subtract sugar Gram for gram, sugar is the most toxic thing we can put in our bodies. It’s found in so many foods, not least those we typically eat more of at Christmas – those mini chocolates, all that alcohol, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, even the cranberry sauce you have with your turkey. You can avoid it by making healthier choices, then “topping up” with the bits you fancy. Make as much of the food as possible at home, so you know the ingredients; and if you have to add sugar to something, try xylitol which you can buy from most health food shops.

• Deep massage By taking some time out to relax and unwind you can support the body’s own healing processes which can help to return it to a state of balance and well being. A No Hands® Massage is a deep, relaxing, rejuvenating and nourishing treatment for everyone who is stressed and can’t relax. No Hands Massage is deeper and more effective than you ever thought possible. The massage is so powerful that you will feel the benefits long after the session has finished.

• Get Active Sitting on our bottoms over Christmas can cause us to lose up to 5lbs of muscle. When it’s used, muscle needs a lot of energy to be maintained – so without muscle, we store more fat. Get up and get out – go for a walk, enjoy the festive scenery, have fun with the kids; just get active! Your metabolism will be boosted, your body will use a lot of what you have eaten, and you’ll find it easier to keep away from junky foods. • Drink water With all the alcohol going round, it’s easy to forget water is key to maintaining your energy levels and mood. We often mistake signs of thirst for signs of hunger – be aware of this so it doesn’t happen! Aim for 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day. If you’re not used to this, gradually increase the amount over a few days. Heather Gillam, Trainer Fitbiz Training, www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

12

• Ear Candling A soothing and relaxing treatment for sinus problems, sore throats, catarrh, and headaches, it incorporates a relaxing face, neck and scalp massage. It relieves pressure and pain in the head area and is effective for all ages including children. • Reflexology Reflexogy can help ease away the tension if you have tired, aching feet by encouraging the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance. It has been shown to be effective for back pain, migraine, infertility, arthritis, sleep disorders, sports injuries, hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders and is suitable for all ages. 3. Rebecca Weller • Value vitamins Get plenty of immune-boosting antioxidants and vitamin C. Stock up on supermarket frozen red and purple berries to make breakfast smoothies, and fruit crumbles. For a delicious treat, layer vanilla yoghurt with defrosted berries and add some grated dark chocolate, and chopped fresh walnuts for extra omega 3 goodness. • Avoid comfort eating Don’t be tempted to comfort eat to keep warm this winter. Eating too much stodgy food can pile on the pounds, which may prove difficult to lose next spring. The ideal plate should be ¼ protein (meat, fish, vegetarian protein, etc), ¼ starchy carbohydrate (potato, pasta, rice) and ½ vegetables. • Veg rainbow Don’t get stuck in a rut with vegetables. Picture a rainbow, and work your way through the colours to reach your five a day. Try peppers or strawberries (red), sweet potato or satsuma (orange) banana or sweetcorn (yellow) avocado or apple (green) blueberries (blue) purple sprouting broccoli or blackberries (indigo) aubergine

Haslemere girls take to the catwalk The Haslemere Fashion Show provide a silver lining for a wet and windy November. Words and pictures by Aimee Plant

F

orget Paris, London, and New York, the catwalk at the Haslemere Educational Museum was hot with models and the latest designs from local boutiques in November. Indeed they had to call in the Haslemere Fire Brigade to cool things down – as models! The Haslemere Fire Brigade did a fine job of modelling the outfits from each decade. Among the costume displays were examples of casual and evening wear from local boutiques in Haslemere, including Clova, Sports Locker, Luigi, Blush, Amazing Grace and Danielle Taylor. The ‘sell out show’ was put together by Angie Townsend from Eden Hair and Beauty and John Orr from The Haslemere Wardrobe. “We wanted to put an interesting twist on this years fashion show,” said Angie, who

narrated the 1900s fashions, and wore many splendid costume changes throughout the night, from an elegant 1920s ball-gown to a raunchy 1960s cocktail dress. Haslemere Chamber of Commerce President Melissa King, of Marley Flowers, hosted the show. Music by Chris Gordon, provided a buzzy background at the interval when drinks were flowing nicely, thanks to the team of volunteers dressed in Victorian maids’ uniform. Delicious canapés, courtesy of Julie’s Sandwich Bar, were circulating in the room. After the interval the runway really warmed up when beautiful underwear designs by Amazing Grace came to the stage. Sports Locker cooled things down with their ski-wear collection and their women’s and men’s fitness range.

Danielle Taylor finished the night off with her gorgeous wedding gowns, accompanied by flower arrangements designed by Marley Flowers, which

PROFILE

between the Town Council, the Chamber of Commerce, the Haslemere Initiative and many other organizations who all work together on big events such as the Haslemere Festival, the Food Festival and the Christmas Market. I believe that these events make a difference in keeping Haslemere’s profile high and helping the town to weather the recession. NK: What have been some the difficult issues so far? MO: The St Bartholomew’s Children’s Family Centre, behind the parish church, took some work. We had to consider parking, traffic management and location and to comment back to Surrey County Council. The centre is much needed in Haslemere but can only be in one place and because of our geographical spread that won’t suit everyone, so we are adamant that an outreach facility should be provided to serve other areas of the town. We expect the first turf for the centre to be cut next spring.

Six months in the life of the Mayor Town Mayor Melanie Odell tells Nick Keith about her first six months’ in office Nick Keith: What did you expect when you became Haslemere Mayor in April? Melanie Odell: Well I had been a Town Councillor for two years, and before that worked on many events and been involved with several organizations such as the Haslemere Initiative and the Chamber of Commerce. So I knew it would be busy and I also knew it would be great. NK: What takes up your time? MO: There are full council meetings and the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor (Bill Douglas, from Hindhead) are members of all the committees, so there are those meetings to attend. Time needs to be set aside to prepare for these meetings. We have to make sure that we follow up on all the decisions that are made. I usually pop into the Town Hall on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays – when it is open – go through the Mayor’s events calendar and reply to letters and invitations. NK: How much of your normal working week is taken up with mayoral duties? MO: About 25 per cent of my work time and a good proportion of my leisure time. But it is a great honour and huge fun with local events and fund-raising activities for the town and for my charities – which are Everyman (male cancer) and the Haslemere Educational Museum. NK: Have you started any new initiatives in your first six months as Mayor? MO: I decided I wanted to hold regular receptions for various groups in the community. So far there have been receptions 18

for sports groups, for ‘people in uniform’ (police, fire brigade, clergy, refuse collectors and doctors). Recently we had a reception for senior citizens, not knowing how many (if any) would come. In fact 26 senior citizens came to the reception; many had never set foot in the Town Hall before; and the oldest was over 100 – and she walked up the Town Hall stairs. They were lovely. They seemed to know each other although most of them were in different care homes. They had a good time catching up, and it became quite raucous! It was so popular that we will have to repeat this reception and invite others who we were not able to, due to restrictions in numbers. And I was delighted to have been able to offer refreshments in the Haslemere Hall for members of the parade, the organisers, their family and the public after the Remembrance Service. It was not only an opportunity to thank everyone who helped on the day but also a safe place for our younger parade members to be met by their family and a chance for everyone to catch up and warm up! NK: How does the mayor cover so much ground? MO: In Haslemere there are so many people who help and support. We have an extraordinary number of wonderful volunteers. They are a huge resource. You meet people who are either long-term residents, or have returned after moving away, or have visited the town and decided to come and live here. There is a strong partnership

Finance is going to be a problem for all levels of councils in the future and I am sure that in Haslemere, as with every other town, local organizations will be looking to fill gaps in their income. Waverley’s budget is capped, and their income is reduced with car park revenues being down so they will find it difficult to support as they have in the past. We will all have to look at our requirements and prioritise them accordingly. NK: Would you like to see changes in the structure of local government? MO: I think local authorities, at Town Council level, should have more power. This applies especially to planning. We can spend considerable time on a planning matter and then find the planning authority differs in their opinion to ours for some reason. Planning is a difficult issue, and many members of the public are not aware that they can make representations to the Town Council as well as to Waverley. I think the majority of Councillors would appreciate having more responsibility at a local level for open spaces, funding, really anything that effects us directly as a local community. NK: As we are meeting in mid-November, do you have any particularly memorable events this month? MO: Remembrance Sunday was outstanding – very moving and very special. It is a great community event, bringing together the young and the old, remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us. Reading the names on the war memorial as the wreaths are laid is a privilege which I will never forget. It is just one of the events that makes being Mayor of Haslemere such a great honour.

Grayshott resounds with carols

G

rayshott Concerts stages a concert at 6.30pm on Sunday 6 December at St Luke’s Church in aid of the church bells. This event will be similar to last year’s ‘It’s Christmas!’ concert, which was hugely successful. Grayshott’s own choir, Excelsis, joins the Choristers of St Edmund’s School, Hindhead under Director of Music, Robert Lewis, for a programme of Christmas

music, carols and readings – some traditional, some modern and some surprises. Tickets cost £10 each. More carols are on Christmas Eve at 7pm, when Buy In Grayshott Campaign, in association with Grayshott Concerts, stages its traditional “Carols in the Square”. This annual carol sing-along, led by the Vicar of Grayshott, Revd Moray Thomas, attracted an audience of almost 1000

people of all ages last year. They enjoyed hot chocolate and biscuits in almost perfect weather. No tickets required – just turn up and enjoy singing! Plans for next year: In 2010, Grayshott Concerts have another ambitious programme planned, with Messiah on 20 March and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in May. Grayshott Concerts, 01428 606666

Budding tennis fans had clinics from four ex-Davis Cup players – Jeremy Bates, Lee Childs, James Auckland and Danny Sapsford (Grayshott’s resident pro). The four then played singles and doubles exhibition matches in front of an enthusiastic crowd. All proceeds from the ticket sales and raffle went to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. eadley’s Beavers, Cubs and Scouts hall has had a £12,000 revamp, including a £2,000 from East Hampshire District Council. Parents and local people contributed around 300 man hours for free on demolitions, removing rubble, trenchdigging, fitting out a new storage container, making good the ceilings, painting and decorating. The floor has been levelled, resurfaced and marked out for games. Around 60 boys and girls between the ages of six and 14 from Headley/Bordon are involved in the various groups. The Guides and the Headley Theatre Club also use the centre on Beech Hill Road. Debbie Long, Beaver Leader, said: “It was really cramped, and we desperately needed a bigger space.”

A

mong the stars of the FirkinFest beer festival in Grayshott Village Hall at the end of October were 23 real ales and six ciders, available at £2.50 a pint, from a stylish souvenir festival glass. This was the first beer festival in Grayshott and it was so well attended that the organizers are already planning FirkinFest 2010. The Upbeat Beatles, a tribute band, starred on the final evening of the first FirkinFest, and a packed audience enjoyed over two hours of dancing. This followed a relaxing Saturday afternoon listening to jazz from Binky's Dixie Demons. On the Friday opening evening, The Claire Phoenix Band gave an excellent performance to boost the convivial atmosphere. Organizers thanked Party In Grayshott and Grayshott Village Hall for their support, their main sponsors, The Fox & Pelican, the many helpers and all those who came along to support. he Condé Nast Johansens’ inspector said of The Crown: “This little gem is absolutely superb – great location, great decor and great food – I can’t recommend it highly enough!” The awards are also based on guest nominations and survey reports. Daniel Hall, the proprietor, said: “It’s taken a lot of hard work since we took over The Crown 18 months ago to make The Crown excellent again, especially during these challenging times. “We are all so proud to be

amongst the other Condé Nast Johansen winners, such as Chewton Glen, Danesfield House Hotel and Le Manoir Aux Quat’ Saisons. It really is very flattering. We plan to go from strength to strength and ensure our policy of the finest standards and best value for money are upheld and surpassed.” Now in its 28th year, the 2010 Condé Nast Johansens Guide was published in October. They have settled in and are planning to refurbish in January, and this will include a brand new children’s play area outside. Kim and Mark welcome you to join them for Christmas Day lunch and for a seasonal menu throughout the festive period. The wonderfully English menu is prepared by one of two chefs

and they urge you to try their new gourmet burger menu. The pub already has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and, with the renovation in January and the large open fireplace, the pub will continue to be the prime place in Grayshott to warm the soul, and the belly, on those cold winter afternoons. Lythe Hill Hotel

L

ythe Hill Hotel & Spa’s new Head Chef, Michael Graham, is determined to build a reputation locally for The Restaurant at Lythe Hill. Although it is still remembered by many as L’Auberge de France, it has been known as The Restaurant at Lythe Hill since 2008. The name change signalled a move away from classic French food to a more modern European style of cooking, using seasonal British produce. Michael, a Scot by birth, is delighted by the rural setting of the hotel and believes that the style of food in The Restaurant should match the simplicity of the surroundings. He has worked in a number of Michelin-starred restaurants and country house hotels, including Cameron House on Loch Lomond. He says: “I like food to be what it is – I don’t want the true flavours to be lost.” His favourite dish is still one of the

simplest: sardines with a herb crust on braised borlotti beans with a rocket salad. Diners at the Restaurant at Lythe Hill can expect more of Michael’s unfussy cooking style, while he has devised a menu that will also appeal to the more adventurous diner. Produce for The Restaurant will be seasonal and sourced locally whenever possible. Lythe Hill Hotel & Spa is a member of Surrey Food Links and hopes to increase its number of local suppliers over the coming months. Already Michael has sourced the bread he uses for the sandwiches for afternoon tea from a local baker, The Granary. The revival of afternoon tea is one of Michael’s goals. Given that he worked at Wentworth Golf Club under Mark Flanagan, now the Queen’s chef, it is not surprising that he’s a fan of this great British institution. Lythe Hill Hotel & Spa, 01428 651251

The Bay Leaf

A

n Indian/Nepalese restaurant, it has just opened in Grayshott by Ramu Sharma and Bishnu Kharel. Bishnu, former manager of the Gurkha Durbar, has created a fresh, modern, tranquil restaurant. The menu has a mixture of carefully selected Indian and Nepalese food. “Real Indian dishes are too spicy for our English customers,” says Bishnu so his chefs cook according

to the customers’ taste. He produces his own spices in the kitchen and there are no artificial colours or flavours – all are fresh ingredients. For dessert, there is traditional Indian ice-cream or the healthy Sikarni, a Nepalese dish consisting of fruit, yoghurt and cinnamon. For takeaways, order online. Trade tips Gemma Antrobus of Haslemere Travel top three overseas destinations for 2010. 1. The Caribbean The lure of the white sand beaches and blue waters of the Caribbean islands are extremely tempting when all is grey and cold in the UK. 'Our' winter is 'their' summer, so the weather is fantastic with only the slightest chance of 'liquid sunshine'. With direct flights into all of the major islands (Barbados, Antigua & Jamaica) and also some of the smaller ones (St Kitts) you can fly from the UK in the morning and be sipping cocktails on the beach as the sun sets - Flying time 7-8 hours. 2. Egypt It only takes 5 hours to fly to this North Africa destination and the country has an abundance of activities for all types of travellers. Cruise down the Nile, scuba dive in the Red Sea, visit the world famous pyramids and sphinx in Cairo, the Valley of the Kings in Luxor or simply lie on a beach in Sharm El Sheikh or Hurgada. It’s exceptionally good value for money and not a Euro in sight. 3. North America / Canada - Skiing Skiing is always a strong favourite during the winter months and North America & Canada (Colorado /Banff / Whistler) are by far more popular than their European counterparts. Whilst the US dollar exchange rate isn't as high as it was 18 months ago, it is far more cost effective than the Euro, so après ski and hire of equipment in resort will cost you less. As there are many more resorts in this part of the world you tend to find they are less busy than Europe - added to the fact that the ski season tends to be longer. Pantomime plans

It’s behind you

Haslemere Hall has seen The Haslemere Thespians presenting pantomime for over 50 years. Each year they perform to some 340 people in over eight performances to near capacity audiences. They last performed Aladdin in 2005 and it makes a welcome return in January

T

he Haslemere Thespians have a great cast this year and are very pleased to welcome back Tony Creasey as Dame Window Twankee. His return is particularly poignant because, in tradition to every year, the first night is a charity night where the proceeds of the ticket sales are given to charity. Tony is the stepfather of James Patton who drowned in a tragic accident in Thailand and the Charity Night is in James' memory and "to raise awareness

of Beach Safety Overseas". The excellent cast are supported by a fine chorus and dancers from the Haslemere Performing Arts. One of the dancing highlights being their synchronised swimming routine (no water I'm afraid!). Cast (Principals): Aladdin, Emily Swatton; Widow Twankee, Tony Creasey; Wishee-Washee, Steve Parker; Genie of the Ring, Jessi McCluskey. Haslemere Thespians, 01428 725619

Just have a look at the

Olivia Ray, playing the lead in La Périchole singers that have been used over these years and see where they

are now: Glyndebourne, Covent Garden, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera etc. They all began in Haslemere, where you can be the first to hear them on their way to stardom. It must be the Haslemere X Factor of opera!” A registered charity, Opera South is based at Branksome Place, Haslemere. hichester Festival Youth Theatre presents the world premiere of Bryony Lavery and Jason Carr’s new musical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen from 16 to 31 December Over 70 youngsters aged between 10 and19 will combine collective storytelling, movement, music and dance to present a revamped musical version of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale with the help of a pair of red kicking boots, some pots of honey and some geriatric magic. The Snow Queen, sponsored by Mercers and Linden Homes, was

28

originally told as seven separate stories. It begins with the tale of a magic malevolent mirror which changes everything from good to bad; the story follows a little girl called Gerda who loses her best friend, a little boy called Kay. Join Gerda and Granny Snow on an epic journey following the Northern Lights to the Snow Queen’s Ice Palace. Along the way, they travel through a beautiful bewitched flower garden, down an ice-packed river, meeting a prince and princess, a rambunctious robber girl and a group of enchanted grannies and granddads from Finland and

Lapland. Friendship, excitement and adventure are certainly guaranteed in this snowy, icy tale Now in its 23rd year Chichester Festival Youth Theatre (CFYT) celebrates a membership of over 450 young people and continues to grow. CFYT promotes opportunities for the achievements of young people in a professional producing theatre context and aspires to producing the highest quality of theatre by, with and for young people. As well as weekly workshops for all age groups, the youth theatre is renowned for staging high quality, large scale Christmas productions in the

Festival Theatre, performing to audiences of over 21,000 people. An award-winning playwright, Bryony Lavery has been commissioned by Chichester Festival Theatre for the annual Youth Theatre Christmas show and Jason Carr provides original music and lyrics. They had successful collaboration on the 2008 Christmas show, A Christmas Carol, which is being produced at Birmingham Repertory Theatre this winter. Every child can shine

10 winter tips • Make sure that greenhouse insulation is well secured, or nasty and damaging cold drafts could injure plants inside. Drafts mean lower temperatures and potentially much higher fuel bills! • Check any large trees in or around your garden and make sure that they do not contain any broken or hanging branches resulting from rough weather. Call in a professional tree surgeon to carry out all work, as chainsaws can be lethal in inexperienced hands. • Take cuttings from perpetual flowering carnations. Choose 8 cm long side shoots from flowering stems and root them in silver sand in a propagator at about 16°C (60 °F). • If weather and soil conditions permit (only likely on very well drained sites!) continue to dig over spare ground and prepare for planting. If the soil is wet, stay off it to avoid causing compaction. • Minimise further wind damage to roses by shortening their stems to about 75cm (30in). This

vegetables to grow and then get weekly email advice from Pippa about the plants they have chosen. She will provide photographs, showing how do everything – from preparing for the arrival of the first plants, to planting out, to thinning and pinching-out, and right through to harvest. And, if you have any concerns or queries, you can get free, personal advice from the ‘Ask Pippa’ online service. Pippa is a ‘grow your own’ guru, having grown her own vegetables since she was a child, and written many books and articles about kitchen gardening. She says: “Whilst growing your own vegetables is not hard, the snippets of advice about how and where to plant vegetables that you get on the back of a seed packet, or on a plant labels are not sufficient to ensure you have a reliably successful crop of vegetables. “Similarly, scouring through books for all the information you need (which may not be appropriate to the area you

helps to prevent wind rock, and then you can complete the pruning in March. Use cloches to warm up the ground, and then, on welldrained sites, make further plantings of winter lettuce, protecting these with cloches. Regularly remove faded and weather-damaged flowers from winter flowering bedding plants such as pansies so that the plants continue to produce more blooms. Lift and store the last of the crop of late sown carrots. If left in the ground they will be prone to splitting and attack by slugs. As the curds on cauliflowers develop, make sure that they are not damaged by the weather – no need to buy in special protection, just bend the surrounding leaves over the curds and they provide perfect protection. If you buy a Christmas tree, don’t bring it into the house too soon. Instead cut the end of the trunk again and stand it in a bucket of water in a wind sheltered spot in the garden.

live in or the variety you are growing) is just not realistic for most people’s ‘time-starved’ lifestyles. In the current economic climate, I want to make growing your own vegetables simple and straightforward for everyone so that they can save money, eat delicious, nutritious food and have some ‘low cost’ outdoor fun at the same time.” Based on her experience with her own children, and having successfully introduced ‘grow your own’ in her children’s school, Pippa has found that young people are far more receptive to trying new vegetables when they have grown and picked them themselves. She hopes that her combination of great plants and great advice will encourage teachers around the country to introduce children to growing, and eating their own vegetables in 2010. Schools in stitches Haslemere’s ‘Schools In Stitches’ Initiative gets off to a flying start

H

aslemere Mayor Melanie Odell welcomed schoolchildren and teachers at the ‘Schools in Stitches’ launch event organized by Anas and Sandre, proprietors of The Oriental Rug Gallery in Wey Hill in November. “Haslemere In Stitches is an important event for the town and we are very proud of it,” the Mayor said. “By weaving your rug knots, you will become part of Haslemere's history in the making and forever woven into its fabric for all time.” Anas and Sandre said that they devised the Schools In Stitches initiative as an educationbased project, in response to the numerous requests from local schools, who want to participate in weaving. The forthcoming pre-arranged school visits will give schoolchildren the chance to learn about the history and origins of the Haslemere Coat of Arms; the meaning of the heraldic symbols used; and the rug craftsmanship and techniques involved in creating the weaving. Pupils and teachers can also weave rug knots into Haslemere In Stitches and receive their Completion of Weave certificates during these visits. “Through our Schools In Stitches Initiative we hope to encourage schoolchildren’s interest and pride in their town’s rich cultural history,” said Sandre Blake, “as well as providing an opportunity to learn about

Since its Mayoral launch in March 2009, the Haslemere In Stitches ‘Open Weave’ has become a popular free community feature, with more than 720 adults and children

visiting the Gallery and weaving a rug knot. Haslemere is the first town in the UK to have its coat of arms hand-woven on a traditional loom by a Master Rug Craftsman. The Oriental Rug Gallery, 82 Wey Hill, Haslemere, 01428 656657. www.theorientalruggallery.co.uk.

P

opular local organic beef suppliers Lower Roundhurst Farm has boosted its pedigree herd with the purchase of this year’s Sussex Society’s overall champion bull. Steve Martin, the farm’s new manager, has won at shows in England, Scotland and Wales. His first act as manager was to obtain the champion Sussex bull, Mayfield General, at auction after the Sussex Society’s Show. “It was a nail-biting event bidding against the Royal Windsor Estate,” says Steve, “but I was determined to win this magnificent beast. We already have an enviable reputation for our organic beef, having supplied Clarence House in the past, but our aim is to become world renowned for the quality 32

of our animals. This champion bull puts us well on the way to realising that ambition.” Mayfield General is on show at the family-owned farm on the lower slopes of Blackdown, and visitors are invited to come and meet the new bull and the new farm manager. To mark the champion bull’s arrival, Lower Roundhurst Farm is holding a competition to guess the bull’s weight. Adults can win a Succulent Organic Roasting Joint and for children there’s a cuddly version of the bull. Visitors can also meet yet another potential champion, Moss, a Border Collie puppy and the son of the champion at this year’s world sheep dog trials. Proprietor Moya Connell says that 500 local friends

LIFESTYLE

LiH: Yes, and surely dogs and cats can also pose considerable expense at a time when most families are struggling to pay the bills?

A pet is for life not just for Christmas! The Haslemere Pet Company co-owner and small animal nutritionist Claire Goyer spoke to Life In Haslemere Life In Haslemere: Claire, why are you so against buying a pet for a Christmas present? Claire Goyer: Choosing a pet is a serious decision which will have longterm implications for both the pet and the owner. Each and every pet, from Gerbils to Bearded Dragons, come with their own set of responsibilities, and careful consideration needs to be taken before making a purchase. Animals are not toys and should never be bought on impulse. While a Hamster may look cute under the Christmas tree, what happens when the tinsel is packed away and the children go back to school? Who will look after the pet when the novelty wears off ? Who will pay the vet’s bills? Who will mind the pet when the family

34

goes on holiday? What about ongoing expenses such as food, toys and bedding? All of these things must be given serious thought before the decision to bring an animal into the family is made. LIH: And what about larger pets such as dogs and cats? On this topic, I have no doubt that puppies and kittens should NEVER be purchased for Christmas. Dogs and cats are far more complex pets, and their first few weeks in the home are critical to their future development. Puppies in particular need routine and training in order to grow into well-adjusted adults, and as we all know, for most people routine goes out the window at Christmas time.

The costs of vet’s fees, training, food, and accessories can all begin to mount up, and once the novelty wears off, it becomes very easy for people to abandon their pets under the guise of not being able to cope, when in fact it was the wrong decision to make in the first place. There is also the matter of where the puppy comes from to consider. Due to the overwhelming number of puppies abandoned after the holidays, no reputable breeder will sell a puppy at Christmas time. This only leaves puppy farmers and pet shops cashing in on the “cute factor” with no regard to the puppy’s welfare or breeding. Buying a puppy from one of these sources leaves you open to all manner of heath issues, not to mention supporting a cruel, heartless industry where dogs are kept as breeding machines in disgusting conditions. LiH: So what can you do if your child has their heart set on a pet? I suggest you purchase all the accessories that you will need and place them under the tree. Then on Christmas morning, tell your children that it was much too cold on Santa’s Sleigh for him to bring the pet, but that he has arranged for the elves at the Haslemere Pet Company to look after it until the family is ready to collect. LiH: What is the Haslemere Pet Company’s policy? We are a multi award winning pet shop which never sells dogs or cats, and stop selling the small animals in their care a month before Christmas in order to avoid impulse buys. Unless you can prove to us that you have done your research, we will not sell you a pet at any time of the year, and we get even more strict during the holidays. Break-dancing and other disciplines are open to those who are not interested in other sports

Martial arts for all The Colosseum Karate club in Weyhill offers “true self defence” and teaches a number of disciplines for men, women and children

T

he Colosseum’s range of classes include K1 Kick Boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Karate, street dance, breakdancing, personal training, and pilates. Pupils of all ages are treated as individuals, even within group training sessions. Director Matt Powell and his colleagues do a lot of voluntary teaching for children and youth support. They aim to introduce sport to children who otherwise would not be interested. Colosseum Karate lessons encourage moves which are natural for the student. “Every person is different in shape, strength, and build, male or female,” explains Matt Powell. “We try to tailor the martial art around the person, enabling them to think for themselves and be able to act and react in a way that is natural. We work from modern teachings and cross-train

36

with all clubs that are freethinking. All ages are welcome, male and female, who want to learn the fundamentals’ of pure self defence.” Local business sponsors of the Colosseum include Muscle Inc and Headcase Barbers. “They have made a massive difference,” says Matt, “helping us produce future champions, and helping people reach their goals and dreams.” Louis King and Kate Jones have become professional fighters out of the Colosseum. Louis holds the undisputed Extreme Brawl UK Amateur Title, and he has now defended his title three times. In December, Louis will be fighting on the Extreme Brawl professional show in Streatham in front of 2,000 fans, and it will also be shown on TV. The Colosseum has new breakdancing classes, Streetnations,

under teachers David, Gemma and Robyn. Adults street dance in Alton and Guildford; and for those aged over nine David will run break-dancing classes at the Colosseum on Saturdays from 10.30 till 11.15. The club is also introducing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, taught by Simon Gill, who is a top Cage Fighter and appears on TV. Many of the Colossuem’s top professional instructors are well-known and highly regarded within their chosen fields, Matt Powell adds. For example, personal trainer Gale Vickers is a former semi finalist in TV’s Gladiators.

“Sometimes, good balls are thrown away because they have become wet, particularly at this time of year, and lost their bounce. Dry wet tennis balls in as little as three hours so that they retain their bounce ready for your next game. With 600 million tennis balls manufactured every year, this device is useful for every player and prevents unnecessary waste.” The Tennis Ball Dryer also has a net measure integrated into the handle – and is a convenient way to carry and store tennis balls when cycling or walking to the courts.
