Talking of nights out, the Life Mags team enjoyed an evening at Property Ladder’s Sarah Beeny, Summer Eye-care Special, Arts, Goodwood races to see in the Charity, Eating Out, Competition summer in style. A few Pimms by How to make the most of your home... Sarah Beeny advises the paddock got everyone in the mood amidst jazz on the terrace, before getting down to the nitty gritty of parting with good money to one of the many bookies in front of the finish line.
Petersfield Town Junior Six-a-side Tournament
And I am pleased to report that collectively we did rather well. Those that didn’t still had a good night - either way, what a glorious way to lose money! Our Lifestyle section concentrates on home improvement this issue, with advice from Property Ladder’s Sarah Beeny. With the housing market on the downturn, more of you are opting for stalling a move and improving what you already have. See pages 10 to 12 for her tips plus advice from local suppliers. Pedal power is the theme for our Charity section, with reports on the LIDBA Bike Ride, Petersfield Ups and Downs and the Paris to Hayling cycle. In this issue you will also find a summer eye-care special, an interview with local award-winning children’s author Michelle Magorian and reports on the Mini Rugby Workshop, plus the Petersfield Town Juniors six-a-side football tournament, one of the largest events of its kind in the country. Phew! Have a fabulous summer, come rain or shine, and don’t forget to check out our new website, www.lifeinpetersfield.co.uk.

What’s on at Goodwood 11 - 13 July 29 July - 2 August 19 Sept – 21 Sept
Festival of Speed Glorious Goodwood Goodwood Revival
Glorious Goodwood Stephen Richardson looks at the treasures of Goodwood House including the collections of Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond in the 18th Century The jewel in the crown: Goodwood House. Right: The Tapestry Dining Room
T
he Goodwood Estate is justly famous for its sporting heritage: horse-racing was introduced to the Sussex Downs by the 3rd Duke of Richmond, Charles Lennox, and motor-racing, flying and golf form part of the modern Goodwood experience. At the heart of this sits Goodwood House, a resplendent and evolved Regency building displaying a magnificent collection of art. There was a great period of collection in the late 18th century when Charles Lennox (1735-1806) was posted to Paris as ambassador to the court of Louis XV in 1765, two years after the end of the Seven Years War and the signing of the Peace of Paris. Although the peace was costly to France, which lost territory in North America and influence on the Indian subcontinent, relations remained
8
with the British, who resumed their long-standing love affair with French art and society. In recognition of the importance of this entente, Britain sent high-ranking noblemen to Paris to act as ambassadors. The Duke — politician, scientist and noted patron of the arts — had French ancestry, a descendant of Charles II and his French mistress, Louise de Keroualle. The Duke soon returned to Goodwood bearing lavish diplomatic gifts — the French King had presented him with a Savonnerie carpet and a set of exquisite Gobelins tapestries plus a wealth of fine furniture and porcelain. The Duke commissioned architect James Wyatt to create the Tapestry Drawing Room in an advanced neoclassical style. On completion in 1777, the room was furnished in the fashionable French style
with a particular feature chimneypiece by sculptor John Bacon. Wyatt returned in the 1790s to carry out extensive work on the house, adding two wings to the south front, providing a new formal entrance, dining room and gallery. Executed between 1802-1806 and inspired by discoveries from Napoleon’s campaigns in North Africa, the extraordinary Egyptian State Dining Room was one of the first such interiors in this country, demonstrating how the Duke consistently remained at the cutting edge of fashion, despite his declining years. There are many jewels in Goodwood’s crown. Those not to be missed include the two views of London by Canaletto, and George Stubbs’ studies of hunting and exercising on the Sussex Downs. The Sèvres porcelain is the true glory of
Goodwood, with the 3rd Duke’s collection being perhaps the finest in the country. Contact: Goodwood House, Chichester PO18 0PX Tel: 01243 755000 www.goodwood.co.uk Further reading: Goodwood, Art and Architecture, Sport and Family by Rosemary Baird (Frances Lincoln 2007)

Better bathrooms boost sales “A bathroom refurbishment will always make a house more saleable, giving you the edge in a toughening market,” says Bill Gosney, Managing Director of Littlejohn Bathrooms. “Adding a second bathroom or cloakroom generally adds to the value of a property.” The corners of a bedroom or a loft are ideal locations to consider and clever design will produce stunning results. The addition of a new shower is a practical choice as there are so many shapes and sizes to fit all spaces including awkward areas like under the slope of a roof. Neutral colours and high quality brands create a prestigious feel, and luxurious touches such as floor lighting and underfloor heating will add atmosphere. Catherine Henley, 21, is a Bar Supervisor at Eden in the High Street and lives in Petersfield. She spent last Christmas in Thailand. I went to Thailand last Christmas for six weeks with my then boyfriend to explore and re-visit places he had previously been to when he was younger. On New Year’s Eve, there were Thai Lanterns the size of hot air balloons being lit all over the place and fireworks were going off everywhere. It was breathtaking! The toilets were disgusting though so I would recommend anyone going away to take antibacterial hand gel with them. Travel-wash also came in really handy as it meant I could wash my clothes anywhere without needing to find any facilities. Lucy Douglas, 20, from Petersfield, took a gap year before starting at Bristol University. During my gap year, I went travelling to India, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. I went between January and June 2006 with my then boyfriend. I particularly loved Queenstown, New Zealand because it was full of other young, like-minded people. So the place was buzzing and energetic and there were loads of fun physical excursion trips available. Chiang Mai in Thailand was also an incredible city. The architecture was stunning and the night markets lining the streets were a real experience. However, the endless early morning flights were exhausting and really took their toll. I would tell anyone planning a trip to be careful when choosing your travelling partner. Pick someone with similar interests to your own and remember you’re going to be spending long periods of time in close conditions with this person. Lewis Edmondson is 25 and from Petersfield. His occupation leads him all over the world, but he also takes the time out to travel for his own enjoyment. I work for the Horizontal Directional Drilling Industry and so far my work has taken me to Spain, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Singapore and Germany. I assist in the installation of pipelines under rivers, roads, railway lines and builtup areas. My favourite place of work was India because it was a complete culture shock and such a humbling experience to work with people who have nothing but will do everything they can to help you. For leisure, I have been to Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Guatemala and Mexico. The Perhentian Islands, Malaysia was my favourite place to visit. The scenery was amazing and it was so chilled out and relaxed. The highlight of the holiday was doing my Dive Master course. My worst memory was getting mild dysentery in Indonesia... I was so ill. I would advise anyone going travelling to go with an open mind and try to integrate yourself with the local culture and people to get a lot more from your experience.

Lesley Abbott has worked at The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight for 28 years: “This is an excellent extension of the monthly food market. There are thousands more people here and a very good clientele. As regulars here we get to know lots of faces but it is lovely to see some new ones here today.”
Richard and Louise Millard, from Hambledon, thought the event was superb: “It’s lovely to sit in the Square and take it all in. So far we have sampled mushroom ‘butties’, bought some asparagus and a clematis. We will certainly be back next year.”
