James Cartman, Lyn Howey and Anne Penrose (pictured above) are three of the Waitrose specialists who make sure that customers get the best-tasting food in the supermarket. They look after meat, cheese and fish respectively. In August, Waitrose held a tasting day, the first of a regular series, when customers could try some the tasty food on offer at the Petersfield supermarket. James serves delicious dry-aged meat from listed organic suppliers. And wine specialist Mike North suggested the best wines to accompany various meats and (French) cheeses. Other specialist at the Petersfield branch are: Lyn Wyman and Liam Parton (fish), and Sue Seagar (meat). Watch out for more tasting days at Waitrose, Petersfield.

values, one of these being the quality of home-grown food. In Herefordshire, Ben and Sam’s father is a market gardener, and being brought up in this lifestyle has helped to shape their outlook on the benefits of fresh local produce. In time, they plan to transform the field at the back of the premises in to a full kitchen garden to supply the pub with vegetables and herbs. “We already make everything ourselves,” says Ben, “and I can’t wait until we are able to show our customers exactly where their dinner came from!” In addition to the seasonal
langoustines and crevettes with lime mayonnaise. They are delicious, served in their shells and juicy with fresh washed salad, a wedge of lemon and a hunk of fresh granary bread. The battered monkfish tails with chips and salad for my main course is meaty and the batter light and fluffy. We eat in the bar area among a healthy hubbub of pub banter. Both Ben and Sam chat easily with their locals. They have a very positive outlook on their future in Milland and I wouldn’t mind betting that they will be around for a long while yet. Gang warfare, political intrigue, the delusional power of love ... these 16-year-olds have seen it all ... on stage, in Sharman MacDonald‘s complex drama, After Juliet. The play starts where Shakespeare’s play left off, and speculates on collapse and reconstruction – social, personal and political – among the Montagues and Capulets. It is strong, vital, challenging. Arts: Petersfield Youth Theatre
‘Something’s happening ...’
“Whistle Down the Wind”
“Summer Holiday”
PYT is run by a volunteer management team of nine, each of whom has a relevant skill to offer. Jane Rebeiro reports How did it all begin? PYT was formed about 17 years ago by a group of dedicated parents following a highly successful musical production, which clearly identified the desire from young people in the area for musical theatre experiences. The membership quickly grew from 35 to nearly 350 young people. The range of activities available also increased and now includes Spring Term Workshops, a Spring Season, Easter Project, Summer Term Activities, Summer School and Christmas Production, as well as their Autumn Season. Who is the Artistic Director? Artistic Director Nik Ashton was a founding member of PYT. After performing in the first three Youth Theatre productions he began directing.

What’s the next big thing? PYT is fast approaching its busiest time of year with the ever popular Autumn Season. This year, it features two contrasting pieces:
Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story will give PYT’s older members the opportunity to perform one of musical theatre’s most moving and captivating pieces. Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet is transported to the streets of New York for this highly charged story of rival street gangs and young love. And, PYT has commissioned a new adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows for the younger members to perform. Richard Taylor (known locally for his adaption of Whistle Down the Wind for PYT, as well as many pieces for the National Youth Music Theatre), has composed the score. It has been scripted by Nik Ashton, who said: “It’s fantastic to be able to write our very own adaptation of this enchanting story. Writing it ourselves enables us to play to our members’ strengths and give as many young people as possible the opportunity to take part.” The PYT Autumn Season runs from 20 to 29 September at the Petersfield Festival Hall. Tickets are available from One Tree Books from 1 September, or by telephoning 01730 266730.

What you need to make a Power of Attorney now Since 1984 it has been possible to anticipate and plan for a person’s possible loss of mental or physical capacity by setting up an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA). EPAs allow individuals to appoint one or more people to deal with their financial affairs if they become mentally or physically incapable in the future. STROUD

Factfile 1927: Petersfield RFC formed. The club quickly became a local focus for both sporting and social activity By 1934: The club was running two teams. By 1938: Played on a field at Bell Hill. Older members recall driving cattle from the pitch and removing certain offensive deposits before play could commence. Not surprisingly, that year it was minuted that “an additional bath was bought for 1/6d”. 1948: The club moved to Love Lane; running two teams. Post-match facilities were provided at the Volunteer Arms (later the Welcome Inn). Its changing rooms backed onto the coalyard and the manager was a Vice-President, so the club became very popular as one of the few places with constant hot water. For many years, the club occupied a back room at the Red Lion but, as it grew, it was recognised a more permanent home was needed 1979: The club moved to Penns Place, which had been developed by the Town Council 1989: Opening of clubhouse. 2006: Opening of clubhouse extension.
